It has been demonstrated by using a serological technique that Polycelis nigra (Müller) and P. tennis (Tjima) feed on mayfly and stonefly nymphs in unproductive lakes. Such feeding is less in productive lakes where these insects form a smaller proportion of the invertebrate fauna of the stony littoral zone. These nymphs form a significantly larger part of the diet of P. nigra than of P. tenuis; both triclad species feed more on stoneflies than mayflies.  相似文献

In this experiment the separate and interactive effects of grazing of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphae by collembola and of relative germination date on competition between the mycorrhizal perennial grassPanicum virgatum and the non-mycorrhizal annual cruciferBrassica nigra were investigated. In the absence of competition,P. virgatum mass and P uptake were not affected by collembola grazing; grazing did reduce tissue N concentration and root: shoot ratio. Competition fromB. nigra plants of the same age/size (“simultaneous competition”) significantly reducedP. virgatum total, root, and shoot mass relative to control plants not subject to competition. In contrast, when in competition,B. nigra plants did not differ in biomass fromB. nigra controls grown without competition. Simultaneous competition also reduced N and P uptake byP. virgatum, but not byB. nigra. Grazing by collembola during simultaneous competition increased the differences in nutrient uptake and tended to shift the competitive balance further toward the non-mycorrhizalB. nigra. WhenP. virgatum plants were subjected to competition fromB. nigra plants which germinated three weeks later (“offset competition”) the situation was reversed: offsetB. nigra plants were negatively affected by competition while the larger, olderP. virgatum plants were not. Thus, relative germination date is important in determining the relative competitive ability of these two species. Grazing by collembola did not affect offset competition. The grazing of VAM hyphae by collembola appears to increase N availability in this experimental system. Under simultaneous competition, this N is taken up by the more extensive root system ofB. nigra; under offset conditions, the root system of the smallerB. nigra plants is insufficient to take advantage of the added resources. Thus, we suggest that grazing-induced transient changes in nutrient availability and the differential abilities of the two species to make use of these added resources constitute the mechanisms by which relative germination date and collembola grazing influence competition.  相似文献

Two new species of Pseudokephyrion are described from Little Aurora Lake, Ontario, Canada. The distribution of both P. taeniatum sp. nov. and P. auroreum sp. nov. is restricted, for reasons which are not clear; neither species was found in samples from lakes adjacent to Little Aurora Lake. All lakes in the vicinity are very dilute, oligotrophic and acidic.  相似文献

The larval development of the Japanese flounder,Paralichthys olivaceus, was surveyed using two types of morphometric analyses, modified allometry and polar coordinate analysis by principal component analysis (PCA). In the former, centroid size was used as a growth index instead of total length (TL), such enabling the determination of more detailed changes in each character than ordinary allometry based upon TL. Polar coordinate analysis disclosed two remarkable inflexions during the larval development ofP. olivaceus. Postlarvae ofP. olivaceus were found to undergo four developmental phases. From the point of view of metamorphosis, the phases were named drifting larva, premetamorphic larva, metamorphic larva and postmetamorphic larva, respectively. These phases were also tested by other characters related to flounder metamorphosis.  相似文献

The 2C DNA content and base composition of five Pinus (2n=24) species and two Pinus subspecies from the Balkan region have been estimated by flow cytometry. P. heldreichii (five populations) and P. peuce (one population) were assessed for the first time, as also were subspecies of P. nigra (three populations—two of subspecies nigra and one of subspecies dalmatica) along with P. sylvestris, and P. mugo from the same region. The 2C DNA values of these Pinus ranged from 42.5 pg to 54.9 pg (41.7–53.8×109 bp), and the base composition was quite stable (about 39.5% GC). Significant differences were observed between two subspecies of P. nigra and even between two populations of subsp. nigra. The two other species (P. sylvestris and P. mugo) had 2C values of 42.5 pg and 42.8 pg, respectively, while that of P. peuce was 54.9 pg. These genome sizes are in accordance with published values except for P. sylvestris, which was 20% below estimates made by other authors.Communicated by M. Beckert  相似文献

1. It has been hypothesised that the symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) leads to a higher uptake of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) in aquatic plants, but it has never been shown experimentally without the use of fungicides. In particular, the symbiosis may be important for nutrient uptake by isoetids in oligotrophic lakes, where low concentrations of inorganic N and P both in the water and in the sediment limit the growth of plants and where symbiosis facilitates the uptake of nutrients from the sediment. 2. Plants of the isoetid Littorella uniflora were propagated under the sterile conditions without an AMF infection. The plants were then grown for 60 days with and without re‐infection by AMF, and with either high (150 μm ) or low (ambient concentration approximately 15 μm ) CO2 concentration. 3. The study proved that the symbiosis between AMF and L. uniflora had a positive impact on the retention of N and P in the plants at very low nutrient concentrations in the water and on biomass development. Shoot biomass and standing stocks of both P and N were significantly higher in re‐infected plants. 4. Raised CO2 concentration resulted in a fivefold increase in hyphal infection, but had no impact on the number of arbuscules and vesicles in the cross sections. There were significantly higher biomass and lower tissue P and N concentrations in the plants from high CO2 treatments. This resulted in similar standing stocks of P and N in plants from low and high CO2 treatments. 5. The results from this study showed that the symbiosis between AMF and L. uniflora is an important adaptation enabling isoetids to grow on nutrient‐poor sediments in oligotrophic lakes.  相似文献

Recently, the number of collection records of Pemphigus galls from Populus nigra has been increasing in Japan. To identify the galls on P. nigra, mitochondrial COI sequences were analyzed from galling aphid samples collected on P. nigra in Tokyo and Hokkaido. From the BLAST search and neighbor‐joining (NJ) analysis, the aphid samples were identified as Pemphigus bursarius, which has not been recorded from Japan. Two samples from Tokyo and Hokkaido showed a genetic difference of 0.30%. This result suggests that different strains of P. bursarius might have been introduced into the Japanese islands at least twice.  相似文献

Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris are linked by a small river, and although originally a single larger lake, the lakes now support contrasting algal communities. A study of the sequences of diatom remains and chrysophycean cysts present in long sediment cores has been carried out to assess the historical extent of the differences in these algae between the two lakes.

Investigations have included statistical analysis to determine the precision of counting sediment samples. The most efficient sampling and counting procedure, resulting in counts of acceptable precision, involved taking a single sample of sediment from a depth horizon, preparing two replicate slides and counting the entire area of each slide. A comparison of the variation in distribution of these siliceous algae in replicate sediment samples taken from the surface sediment with the variation in distribution down the long sediment core from Llyn Padarn showed that the vertical variation greatly exceeded the horizontal variation. Thus variation in diatom numbers down the sediment core reflects changes in the alga reaching the sediments rather than horizontal patchiness of distribution in the top most layers of sediment.

Studies of the sequences of diatoms and chrysophycean cysts were carried out on a 4·75 m core from Llyn Padarn and 2·1 m core from Llyn Peris representing c. 6000 years and c. 900 years of the two lakes respective history. From c. 6000 until c. 2200 years B.P., Llyn Padarn was an acid oligotrophic lake. It appears that about 2200 years B.P., Llyn Padarn became more enriched, Asterionella formosa was the most numerous diatom preserved in the sediment at this time. Reversion to oligotrophic conditions then occurred c. 2000 years B.P. The oldest material from the Peris sediment core was characterized by centric diatoms similar to those found in Padarn sediment dating from 2000 years B.P. to the surface of the Padarn core. Thus at this time, c. 900 years B.P., the algal communities in the two lakes were similar. Both lakes were oligotrophic. However, by 200 years B.P. the chemistry of the sediment core from Peris showed evidence of extensive copper and slate mining in the environment. At this time the species of siliceous algae preserved in the Peris core changed, and the current differences in algal communities in the two lakes appear to originate from this point in history.  相似文献

Bryozoans were investigated during field studies of 601 lakes and other surface water bodies throughout Norway from 1960 to 1978. The frequency of occurrence of Plumatella fruticosawas evaluated in relation to 12 environmental variables. Statistically significant deviations from the frequencies expected on the basis of random distribution were described using the categories preference, avoidance, and absence. According to our material P. fruticosais one of the most common bryozoan species in Norwegian fresh water, represented in samples from 251 localities. This species occurred frequently all over the country, north to 71° 06 N (the northernmost record globally). Maximum elevation above sea level was 1179 m (maximum for Northern Europe).In most studies of freshwater bryozoans from the holarctic region, Plumatella fruticosahas been reported as widely distributed, but locally rare. In Norway, however, P. fruticosa is frequently found all over the country, even far to the north. The species apparently finds an optimal climate in the cold temperate and cold regions of Norway. Plumatella fruticosapreferred lakes, avoided slow-flowing rivers and ponds, and was absent in smaller water bodies. The species preferred somewhat higher elevation (400–900 m above sea level), but avoided lakes with the lowest summer temperatures (below 11 °C). P. fruticosa also preferred oligotrophic conditions with poor aquatic vegetation, stony shores, lakes poor in calcium and magnesium (sometimes almost comparable with distilled water), where the water was clear and colourless, and slightly acidic to neutral. The species also preferred lakes surrounded by Sphagnum bogs and was absent when pH was below 5.2. P. fruticosa avoided eutrophic conditions with rich aquatic vegetation, alkaline water (pH above 7.0), lakes with a higher content of calcium and magnesium and those with strongly coloured water (above 100 mg Pt l–1). In spite of its preference for ion-poor conditions, it was also found in a brackish water lake. For most environmental variables, the species had a wider tolerance range than reported from elsewhere.  相似文献

The relationship between the development ofCoccinella septempunctata brucki Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and its parasitoid,Perilitus coccinellae (Schrank) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was studied at two photoperiods (L 16:D8 and L 12: D12) at 26°C. The development ofP. coccinellae is well synchronized with the physiological state of the host,C. septempunctata, which can be parasitized not only as adult but also as larva or pupa. The parasitoid larva completed larval development within 19 days in a non-diapausing host, while in diapausing adults as well as in pupae held at diapause-averting conditions, the parasitoid larva ceased growth at the first instar. Growth was resumed when diapause of the host terminated or by the emergence of the adult host from the pupa. About 550 spheric cells, teratocytes, were liberated into the host hemocoel when the parasitoid egg hatched. The teratocytes increased in size in the active host, while their development was arrested in the diapausing host. Application of methoprene caused diapause termination of both host and parasitoid larva. The results indicate that the development of the larva ofP. coccinellae depends on the physiological conditions of the host,C. septempunctata brucki. The host-parasite relation thus represents an ‘endogenous synchronization’ in the sense of Schoonhoven's definition.  相似文献

1. We conducted bioassays of nutrient limitation to understand how macronutrients and the position of streams relative to lakes control nitrogen (N2) fixation and periphytic biomass in three oligotrophic Rocky Mountain catchments. We measured periphytic chlorophyll‐a (chl‐a) and nitrogen‐fixation responses to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) additions using nutrient‐diffusing substrata at 19 stream study sites, located above and below lakes within the study catchments. 2. We found that periphytic chl‐a was significantly co‐limited by N and P at 13 of the 19 sites, with sole limitation by P observed at another four sites, and no nutrient response at the final two sites. On average, the addition of N, P and N + P stimulated chl‐a 35%, 114% and 700% above control values respectively. The addition of P alone stimulated nitrogen fixation by 2500% at five of the 19 sites. The addition of N, either with or without simultaneous P addition, suppressed nitrogen fixation by 73% at nine of the 19 sites. 3. Lake outlet streams were warmer and had higher dissolved organic carbon concentrations than inlet streams and those further upstream, but position relative to lakes did not affect chl‐a and nitrogen fixation in the absence of nutrient additions. Chl‐a response to nutrient additions did not change along the length of the study streams, but nitrogen fixation was suppressed more strongly by N, and stimulated more strongly by P, at lower altitude sites. The responses of chl‐a and nitrogen fixation to nutrients were not affected by location relative to lakes. Some variation in responses to nutrients could be explained by nitrate and/or total N concentration. 4. Periphytic chl‐a and nitrogen fixation were affected by nutrient supply, but responses to nutrients were independent of stream position in the landscape relative to lakes. Understanding interactions between nutrient supply, nitrogen fixation and chl‐a may help predict periphytic responses to future perturbations of oligotrophic streams, such as the deposition of atmospheric N.  相似文献

Cycling of phosphorus (P) at the sediment/water interface is generally considered to be an abiotic process. Sediment bacteria are assumed to play only an indirect role by accelerating the transfer of electron from electron donors to electron acceptors, thus providing the necessary conditions for redox-and pH-dependent, abiotic sorption/desorption or precipitation/dissolution reactions. Results summarized in this review suggest that
  1. in eutrophic lakes, sediment bacteria contain as much P as settles with organic detritus during one year
  2. in oligotrophic lakes, P incorporated in benthic bacterial biomass may exceed the yearly deposition of bioavailable P several times
  3. storage and release of P by sediment bacteria are redox-dependent processes
  4. an appreciable amount of P buried in the sediment is associated with the organic fraction
  5. sediment bacteria not only regenerate PO4, they also contribute to the production of refractory, organic P compounds, and
  6. in oligotrophic lakes, a larger fraction of the P settled with organic detritus is converted to refractory organic compounds by benthic microorganisms than in eutrophic lakes.
From this we conclude that benthic bacteria do more than just mineralize organic P compounds. Especially in oligotrophic lakes, they also may regulate the flux of P across the sediment/water interface and contribute to its terminal burial by the production of refractory organic P compounds.  相似文献

Iron Constraints on Planktonic Primary Production in Oligotrophic Lakes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Phototrophic primary production is a fundamental ecosystem process, and it is ultimately constrained by access to limiting nutrients. Whereas most research on nutrient limitation of lacustrine phytoplankton has focused on phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) limitation, there is growing evidence that iron (Fe) limitation may be more common than previously acknowledged. Here we show that P was the nutrient that stimulated phytoplankton primary production most strongly in seven out of nine bioassay experiments with natural lake water from oligotrophic clearwater lakes. However, Fe put constraints on phytoplankton production in eight lakes. In one of these lakes, Fe was the nutrient that stimulated primary production most, and concurrent P and Fe limitation was observed in seven lakes. The effect of Fe addition increased with decreasing lake water concentrations of total phosphorus and dissolved organic matter. Possible mechanisms are low import rates and low bioavailability of Fe in the absence of organic chelators. The experimental results were used to predict the relative strength of Fe, N, and P limitation in 659 oligotrophic clearwater lakes (with total phosphorus ≤ 0.2 μM P and total organic carbon < 6 mg C l−1) from a national lake survey. Fe was predicted to have a positive effect in 88% of these lakes, and to be the nutrient with the strongest effect in 30% of the lakes. In conclusion, Fe, along with P and N, is an important factor constraining primary production in oligotrophic clearwater lakes, which is a common lake-type throughout the northern biomes. In 1978–80, oligochaete communities of meso-eutrophic Lake Léman (Lake of Geneva) were compared to those of mesotrophic Lake Neuchâtel. Worm species were classified into three groups corresponding to their increasing tolerance to eutrophication: (1) oligotrophic species, mostly Peloscolex velutinus, Stylodrilus heringianus; (2) mesotrophic species, mostly Potamothrix vejdovskyi, P. bedoti; (3) eutrophic species, mostly Potamothrix hammoniensis, P. heuscheri, Tubifex tubifex. In both lakes, eutrophic species constituted the bulk of the communities in terms of absolute abundance. However, relative abundance of mesotrophic and eutrophic species was higher in Lake Léman; oligotrophic species were more important in Lake Neuchâtel. These data confirmed the trophic classification of lakes based on chemical parameters. The number of zero values, which perturbated statistical analysis, was reduced by using species groupings instead of isolated species. Thus, making the lakes more comparable even if different species were present in each one. Relative density values based on all samples were distributed among 4 density classes for the 3 species groupings. The 12 resulting frequencies described the community structure expressed in terms of eutrophication. Furthermore, these frequencies may be used for comparison of eutrophication levels in several lakes.  相似文献

Three species and two natural hybrids ofProsopis from the Entre Rios province of Argentina are compared morphologically, cytologically and chromatographically. It is possible to identify them by their chromatograms. There is a seasonal variation in about one third of the phenolic compounds analysed, a phenomenon that should be considered for chemosystematical conclusions. The results show many affinities betweenP. alba andP. nigra, whereasP. affinis apparently is more isolated. From the frequence of the hybrids, their fertility and their meiotic behaviour one can evaluate the isolation barriers between these species.  相似文献

The results are presented of a survey of diatom assemblies in a number of moorland pools and lakes in the Dwingeloo area of Drenthe. Four assemblies, with some intermediate ones, are described. (1) An assembly characterized by an abundance ofFrustulia rhomboides var.saxonica, Eunotia lunaris, E. veneris var.rhomboidea andTabellaria flocculosa and found in oligotrophic water with a pH in the range 3.1–4.2 (2) An assembly solely consisting ofEunotia exigua which occurs in oligo-minerotrophic pools with brownish deposits of iron compounds and a pH of about 3.5. (3) An assembly consisting of 100%Eunotia paludosa found in the ombrotrophic habitat of emerged stands ofSphagnum with a pH averaging 3.1. This species was found in nearly all localities sampled. (4) An assembly characterized by the sympatric occurrence ofMelosira italica, Nitzschia gandersheimiensis, Gomphonema parvulum andTabellaria flocculosa and found in mesotrophic, disturbed habitats with an average pH of about 4.5. Restriction site variation in chloroplast DNA and nuclear ribosomal DNA was examined in 16 accessions from the Salicaceae comprising ten species of Populus and one outgroup species of Salix. Forty-nine restriction site mutations in the chloroplast DNAs were used to generate one most parsimonious phylogenetic tree. This tree indicates that all varieties of P. nigra (black poplars of sect. Aigeiros) have a chloroplast genome, maternally inherited, derived from the clade including the white poplars (P. alba and segregate species of sect. Populus) and divergent from the American cottonwoods of their own section. Twenty-one restriction site mutations in the nuclear ribosomal DNAs generated a single most parsimonious phylogenetic tree that indicates that the nuclear genome ofP. nigra is distinct from both the white poplars and American cottonwoods. The incongruity of these independent molecular phylogenies provides evidence for an unusual origin of the black poplars. Populus alba or its immediate ancestor acted as the maternal parent in a hybridization event with the paternal lineage of P. nigra. Subsequent backcrosses to the paternal species gave rise to the extant P. nigra with a chloroplast genome of P. alba and the nuclear genome of the paternal species. These hybridization and introgression events must have pre-dated the divergence of the black poplar varieties. The biphyletic nature of the P. nigra genomes suggests that dependency on one class of molecular or morphological markers or the merging of the two kinds of data sets to derive accurate estimates of true phylogenies could be misleading in plants.  相似文献

The length–weight relationships of the cyprinid fish Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) are described for the 12 most important lakes of Greece. Carassius gibelio is an allogynogenetic fish species, which was introduced into Greek lakes during the late 1970s. The values of the exponent b of the length–weight relationships ranged from 2.33 to 3.38, and varied with the trophic state of the lake. In eutrophic lakes these b values were significantly (P < 0.001) lower than in oligotrophic or mesotrophic lakes. Relationships between the b values and phosphorus concentrations were logarithmic: b = 1.37–0.13 log (PO4‐P); total length, fork length and standard length were linear (in all cases: r2 > 0.95). In most of the lakes, populations consisted of females, with the exception of Pamvotis, Doirani and Koronia lakes where a small proportion were males.  相似文献
