The objectives of this study were to determine the acclimation of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) foliar respiration to different night-time low temperatures, daytime high temperatures, and daily mean temperatures, and then to use the responses of temperature acclimation to various temperature regimes to predict acclimation under fluctuating temperatures. Experiments were conducted on two-year-old seedlings in growth chambers using different combinations of day and night-time temperatures. The first experiment exposed trees to 22/22, 29/22, 22/15, and 29/15 degrees C day/night (d/n). When measured at a common temperature (15, 22 or 29 degrees C), respiration rates were lower for trees exposed to higher treatment temperatures and acclimation was influenced by both day and night-time temperature. However, the extent of acclimation did not relate to mean temperature, i.e. respiration rates measured at a common temperature ranked as follows for seedlings exposed to different temperature regimes, 22/15>22/22>29/15 congruent with29/22 degrees C d/n. Rather, acclimation of foliar respiration was linearly related to mean daily respiration rate, where mean daily respiration rate is the average of the respiration rates measured at the day and night-time treatment temperatures. The discrepancy between mean daily respiration rate and mean daily temperature occurred because respiration increased exponentially with increasing temperature. In a second experiment, the same seedlings were exposed to 22/22, 15/15, 25.5/18.5, and 25.5/15 degrees C d/n to test the relationship between mean daily respiration rate and acclimation. As in the first experiment, acclimation was linearly related to mean daily respiration rate. The concept of effective acclimation temperature, which is the temperature at which the mean daily respiration rate occurs, was derived from these results as a means to predict the extent that foliar respiration acclimates to treatment temperature.  相似文献

The mean durations of development in the pupae of Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen) and their survival were measured at combinations of six constant temperatures (15, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5 and 30°C) and up to 11 levels of relative humidity. The thermal survival range for the pupae is between 15 and 30°C, and the humidity viable range is between 60 and 100% RH.
2. 2. The percentage water loss of the pupae was measured at six constant temperatures and four levels of relative humidity. There was a rapid increase in the percentage of water lost during the first 24 h exposure at all tested conditions. However, pupae reared at 100% RH at each constant temperature, sustained the lowest water loss. The percentage water loss increased as temperature increased, as humidity decreased and also with time.
3. 3. The duration of larval development studied at six constant temperatures (15, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5 and 30°C) was inversely related to temperature. A wide range of alternating temperature regimes had a small, though statistically significant, accelerative effect on larval developmental time. Thus, the present results may be used as a basis for modelling development under changing temperatures, with the assumption that the developmental rate is nearly identical to that from a series of constant temperatures.

S ummary . Growth rates of Erwinia amylovora in yeast extract–peptone broth were assessed, by colony counts and turbidity measurements, at c. 3° intervals over the range 6.5–36.0°. An Arrhenius plot showed a linear relationship between doubling rate and temperatures between 9 and 18°. The slope of this line was comparable to that obtained for Escherichia coli by Ingraham (1958) between c. 12 and 30°. At 18° there was a sharp change in growth rate; between 18 and 28° the doubling time decreased only from 2.1 to 1.3 h (Q10= 1.8) but between 8 and 18° it increased from 2.1 to 14.0 h (Q10= 6.7). This apparently critical temperature is of special interest because maximum air temperatures > 18° appear necessary for epidemic blossom blight in North America.  相似文献

Summary Dispersal units of Aegilops ovata contain in their spikelets caryopses differing in morphology, weight and germinability according to their position in the spikelets. Plants originating from caryopses of the diverse orders were grown under various photo- and thermoperiodic conditions, and the caryopses harvested germinated under uniform conditions. Under all conditions tested, the relative difference in weight between the caryopses of the various orders was not affected. But plants grown under long days and/or low temperatures produced heavier caryopses than plants grown under short days and/or high temperatures respectively. There was a positive correlation between weight and germinability in caryopses of the various orders derived from one mother plant, and a reverse correlation in caryopses formed on mother plants grown under low and high temperatures. When mother plants arising from various orders of caryopses were grown under long days and low temperatures, they produced caryopses of different germinability, showing that the origin of the mother plant may affect the germination qualities of its offspring. The aim of this work was to study to what extent surface temperatures of growing pigs are altered during acclimation to a change of the air temperature and to exposure to draught.

4 groups of 10 pigs (Large White × Dutch Landrace) of approximately 10 weeks old were used. They were housed in 2 calorimeters with 2 pens each. In the reference chamber air temperature was kept constant at 25°C, in the other chamber air temperature could be lowered to 15°C, and a draught was also applied. Surface temperatures of the pigs were measured by means of Probey® Thermal Video System, with an accuracy of ±0.3°C.

Surface temperatures of growing pigs were obviously related to air temperature, draught and the duration of food withdrawal. Acclimation to air temperature or draught as measured by surface temperatures was not observed between days, but within and between night periods.

Also indications of huddling, vasocontriction and even cold-induced vasodilatation within the neck, chest and abdomen region of the pigs' body surface were observed.  相似文献

Germination of nondormant seeds of Manfreda brachystachya (Agavaceae) was analyzed at temperatures ranging from 11–35°C. Maximum germination (95%) occurred at 25°C. An exponential sigmoid relationship was found between time and cumulative germination. Germination rate for every subpopulation (10–90% germination) was estimated by means of a normal distribution analysis. The kurtosis indicated die amplitude of the range of temperatures where the highest germination rates were concentrated, and the skew indicated sharply inhibitory temperatures in the range of temperatures used. Based on analysis of the normal distribution models for each subpopulation, we calculated a theoretical function which described germination rate over the temperature range considered: F(T,χ) = A × exp[−B(C−1)2], where A is the function that describes germination rate for each subpopulation (characterized by the percentage [χ] at optimal temperature); B is a shape parameter, 1/(σG2); and C is the ratio between each germination temperature (T) and the optimal germination temperature. The Gaussian curves were used to calculate thermal time, and base and ceiling temperatures. Germination thermal time ranged from 1 333 to 2 373°C h, and base and ceiling temperatures were 10.44 ± 0.7°C and 39.54 ± 0.7°C, respectively. There was a linear relationship between thermal time and cumulative percentage of germination of the subpopulations. Based on fitted curves for each subpopulation, the use of a general model for all the subpopulations has been proven: F8 = A × exp[−5.9437(C−1)2], where changes in the curves for each subpopulation depended on temperature only.  相似文献

Experiments on the effects of temperature on the levels of unsaturated fatty acids and their rates of desaturation in Brassica napus leaf lipids have shown that significant differences occur in the composition of all diacylglycerols in the leaf between plants grown at high and low temperatures. In the major thylakoid diacylglycerols, monogalactosyl-diacylglycerol and digalactosyldiacylglycerol, not only is there an increase in the level of unsaturation at low temperatures, but there is a change in the balance between molecular species of chloroplastic origin (16/18C) and cytosolic origin (18/18C). Radioactivity tracer data indicate that at low temperatures there are two distinct phases of desaturation in the fatty acids of the major diacylglycerols of these leaves. A rapid phase, which appears in plants grown at low temperatures and results in the desaturation of palmitic acid to hexadecadienoic acid and oleic acid to linoleic acid may explain the high levels of unsaturated fatty acids found in the leaf diacylglycerols from plants grown at low temperatures. The appearance of this rapid phase is controlled by the temperature at which the plant is grown and is not subject to rapid variations in environmental temperature.  相似文献

The promoting effect of light and alternating temperatures on the germination of seeds of three contrasting populations of Dactylis glomerata L. was studied. Irradiation treatments using broad band low irradiance light sources resulted in red/far-red reversible effects, demonstrating the involvement of phytochrome in germination control. Reduction of germination by far-red below the level of a dark control indicated the presence of high pre-existing levels of the active form of phytochrome (Pfr) in some individuals. The capacity for dark germination at 21/11°C (12 h/12 h) was shown to be dependent on Pfr. Although some individuals were capable of germination at constant temperatures following red irradiation, in most seeds germination was dependent on the presence of Pfr and alternating temperatures. Some individuals responded to a single red irradiation, although a large proportion of seeds required high levels of Pfr to be maintained for long periods. Previously published dose response curves for alternating temperatures and a measured dark reversion time of 48 h for Pfr established by a single 60 min red irradiation, provided firm evidence of a direct correlation between the requirements for repeated irradiation and number of alternating temperature cycles.  相似文献

We developed and tested a method, based on conduction heat transfer analysis, to infer airway mucosal temperatures from airstream temperature-time profiles during breath-hold maneuvers. The method assumes that radial conduction of heat from the mucosal wall to inspired air dominates heat exchange during a breath-hold maneuver and uses a simplified conservation of energy analysis to extrapolate wall temperatures from air temperature vs. time profiles. Validation studies were performed by simultaneously measuring air and wall temperatures by use of a retractable basket probe in the upper airways of human volunteers and intrathoracic airways of paralyzed intubated dogs during breath holding. In both protocols, a good correlation was demonstrated between directly measured wall temperatures and those calculated from adjacent airstream temperature vs. time profiles during a breath hold. We then calculated intrathoracic bronchial wall temperatures from breath-hold airstream temperature-time profiles recorded in normal human subjects after cold air hyperpnea at 30 and 80 l/min. The calculations show airway wall temperatures in the upper intrathoracic airways that are below core body temperature during hyperpnea of frigid air and upper thoracic airways that are cooler than more peripheral airways. The data suggest that the magnitude of local intrathoracic heat/water flux is not represented by heat/water loss measurements at the airway opening. Both the magnitude and locus of heat transport during cold gas hyperventilation vary with changes in inspired gas temperature and minute ventilation; both may be important determinants of airway responses.  相似文献

用 7条舟山眼镜蛇 (Najaatra)研究动物对光暗周期加热光源反应所导致的体温变化。设计两项实验 ,每项实验历时 9d。实验一光照期覆盖整个白天 ,实验二光照期覆盖整个晚上。眼镜蛇仅在加热光源开启期间进行体温调节 ,但光照期内任何阶段都未发现所有个体同时处于热活动状态。两项实验中热活动个体百分比的时间变化显著 ,实验二热活动个体百分比波动相对大于实验一。在加热光源开启期间 ,实验一热活动眼镜蛇的百分比总体上大于实验二。在两项实验中 ,热活动眼镜蛇体温的时间变化都不显著。实验一热活动眼镜蛇的体温高于实验二 ,而两项实验中不处于热活动状态的眼镜蛇的平均体温无显著差异。实验一热活动眼镜蛇 (31 1±0 8°C)选择的体温上限高于实验二眼镜蛇 (2 6 0± 0 9°C)。在两项实验的任何时间段内 ,眼镜蛇的体温都不低于环境温度。  相似文献

The phloem-loading-related effects of temperature on leaf ultrastructure were studied in seven species having numerous plasmodesmatal connections between the mesophyll and phloem (symplasmic minor-vein configuration). The response to temperature (between 5 and 30 °C) was characterized by drastic changes in the endoplasmic-reticulum labyrinth (ER labyrinth) of intermediary cells, in the position of the vacuole in bundle-sheath cells, and in the starch content in the chloroplasts of bundle-sheath cells and mesophyll cells. At temperatures above 20 °C, the ER system in the intermediary cells reached its maximal volume, while the vacuole in bundlesheath cells was positioned centripetally (proximal to the intermediary cell). With decreasing temperature, the ER labyrinth in intermediary cells gradually contracted till the ER was fully collapsed at 10 °C and the vacuole in bundle-sheath cells moved to a more centrifugal position. The apparent elimination of photosynthate transport via the ER and plasmodesmata at temperatures lower than 10 °C led to starch accumulation in the chloroplasts of bundle-sheath cells and mesophyll cells. All of these changes were fully temperature-reversible and probably reflect changes in the balance between photosynthate transport and storage. The ultrastructural shifts appear to be correlated with the passage of photosynthate through the intermediary cells and, as a consequence, with the rate of phloem loading at various temperatures. The short-horned lizard Phrynosoma douglassi was studied in a montane habitat (elevation of 2290 m) in the Guadalupe Mountains of Texas. The body temperatures (Tb) of active lizards were consistently between 35–36°C (grand mean=35.5°C) in the period from 0900 to 1800 h during the months of May through September. The lizards began their spring activity during April when environmental temperatures were still low. Although Tbs in April were significantly lower than during May through September, on sunny April days the lizards were able to maintain Tbs near 30°C even when air temperatures were as low as 1.5°C. P. douglassi at this site thermoregulated very effectively whenever they were not limited by the physical environment.  相似文献

The rate of development of Lymnaea auricularia eggs was studied at various constant temperatures between 10° and 36°C. Development was accelerated as the temperature increased and at 36°C the eggs failed to develop. Spring eggs showed differences in their rate of development when compared with summer eggs when measured at similar tempertures.

Both spring and summer eggs were more than 90% fertile. Hatching success was high at temperatures between 10° and 30° (100%–82/9%); while at 34°C it was reduced to 60.6% for spring eggs. It was above 87% at temperatures between 10° and 34°C but it dropped to 62.3% at 36°C for summer eggs.

In one regularly changing temperature experiment a significant acceleration (P < .05) was found. In two others there was no significant difference beween predicted and observed egg durations. In one suddenly changing temperature regime (1 day at 20°, 1 day at 30° and so on) a huge retardation of development was found. In the other suddenly changing experiment (1 day at 15°, 1 day at 25°) no significant difference was found.

The exposure of eggs to extreme temperature (4°C, freezing and 4°C caused a retardation in the race of subsequent development of eggs at 25°C.  相似文献

一天中 ,苹果果实表面最高温度与气温、日照、相对湿度和风速有着密切的关系。通过生长季自动监测果实表面温度的变化 ,并与设置在监测树旁边气象记录仪数据对比 ,揭示出树冠西南部果实表面温度与气温、日照、相对湿度和风速呈高度相关。结果还表明 :日照和气温是导致果实表面高温 (>45℃ )的两个主要因子。在大多数情况下 ,这两个因子相互作用决定果实高温是否发生 ,但气温的作用更为重要。一般在晴天 ,树冠西南部果实表面高温通常出现在 1 3 :3 0~ 1 5 :5 0。果实达到临界日烧高温 (>45℃ )的综合气象条件是 (1 0 :0 0~ 1 6 :0 0平均值 ) :日照 >5 80 W/m2 ;气温 >3 1 .8℃ ;风速 <1 .0 m/s;相对湿度 <3 0 %。气温、日照、风速和相对湿度与果实表面温度都呈高度相关 ,其多元回归方程为 :果实表面温度 (℃ ) =1 9.7 0 .842×气温 (℃ ) 0 .0 0 989×日照 (W/m2 ) - 2 .0 8×风速 (m/s) - 0 .1 48×相对湿度 (% ) ,r2 =0 .6 97  相似文献

SUMMARY. Water temperatures from six north Pennine streams (approximate mean annual discharges 0.04–1.5 m3 s-1) and two Lake District streams (mean annual discharges c. 0.04 m3 s-1) were used to examine the possibility of predicting 5-day or 7-day mean water temperatures from standard meteorological/hydrological data collected at north Pennine stations. The relationship between mean air temperature (X) and mean water temperature (Y) was approximately linear, except in the Pennine streams for periods when mean air temperature was below 0°C. The calculated regressions of mean water temperature upon mean air temperature accounted for 86–96% of the variance of water temperature even when the air and water temperatures were measured at stations some 50 km apart. A negligible improvement was obtained by the use of multiple regressions incorporating rainfall or stream discharge from a nearby metering weir. Predicted water temperatures were rather lower than observed values during the first half of the calendar year and rather higher during the second half, but these seasonal differences could not be adequately quantified for practical application.  相似文献

The influence of constant temperatures on the growth, maturation and reproduction of field-collected and F, generation Helobdella stagnalis, Glossiphonia complanata and Erpobdella octoculata was investigated. Leech material from a lowland, productive lake and from an upland, unproductive lake was cultured at each of the temperatures: l·5,5·5,8, 10·5, 13,16, 19 and 23°C. Field-collected and F1 generation H. stagnalis and E. octoculata matured and produced eggs and young over the range 10·5–23°C, whereas the range for egg production was 8–23°C for field-collected G. complanata, F, generation leeches failing to mature at any temperature due to an additional limiting factor being involved.
Optimal temperatures for cocoon/egg production were observed for E. octoculata, but egg production was similar at all temperatures for G. complanata and H. stagnalis. In contrast, the viability of eggs was greater at certain temperatures for the last two species but was similar at all temperatures for E. octoculata. Differences in egg production between field-collected and F, generation leeches are discussed. Rising temperatures accelerated rates of egg hatching, and of growth and maturation of leeches. The observed differences in survival of leeches at the various temperatures are discussed. Ecotypic adaptation to temperature within the small geographical area of Britain may not occur. It is concluded that though temperature may be a contributory factor determining distribution and abundance in British lakes, other causative factors, such as the occurrence and abundance of food organisms, are more likely to be implicated.  相似文献
