Here we describe a new genus and species of giant ground sloth, Xibalbaonyx oviceps (Megalonychidae, Xenarthra), from the drowned cave system of the northeastern Yucatán Peninsula. The specimen is Late Pleistocene in age and was discovered in the Zapote sinkhole (cenote) near Puerto Morelos in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Xibalbaonyx oviceps differs significantly from all hitherto known Megalonychidae including those from the Greater Antilles and South America. The new taxon suggests a local Caribbean radiation of ground sloths during the Late Pleistocene, which is consistent with the dispersal of the group along a Mexican corridor.  相似文献

Laurencia marilzae Gil‐Rodríguez, Sentíes et M.T. Fujii sp. nov. is described based on specimens that have been collected from the Canary Islands. This new species is characterized by distinctive yellow–orange as its natural habitat color, a terete thallus, four pericentral cells per vegetative axial segment, presence of secondary pit‐connections between adjacent cortical cells, markedly projecting cortical cells, and also by the presence of corps en cerise (one per cell) present in all cells of the thallus (cortical, medullary, including pericentral and axial cells, and trichoblasts). It also has a procarp‐bearing segment with five pericentral cells and tetrasporangia that are produced from the third and fourth pericentral cells, which are arranged in a parallel manner in relation to fertile branchlets. The phylogenetic position of this taxon was inferred based on chloroplast‐encoded rbcL gene sequence analyses. Within the Laurencia assemblage, L. marilzae formed a distinctive lineage sister to all other Laurencia species analyzed. Previously, a large number of unique diterpenes dactylomelane derivatives were isolated and identified from this taxon. L. marilzae is morphologically, genetically, and chemically distinct from all other related species of the Laurencia complex described.  相似文献

Leishmaniasis, a vector‐borne disease transmitted to humans through the bite of phlebotomine sand flies, is of public health significance in southeastern Mexico. Active and continuous monitoring of vectors is an important aspect of disease control for the prediction of potential outbreaks. Thus, the correct identification of vectors is paramount in this regard. In this study, we employed DNA barcoding as a tool for identifying phlebotomine sand flies collected in localized cutaneous leishmaniasis endemic areas of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Specimens were collected using CDC light and Shannon traps as part of the Mexican Ministry of Health surveillance program. DNA extraction was carried out using a nondestructive protocol, and morphological identification based on taxonomic keys was conducted on slide‐mounted specimens. Molecular taxonomic resolution using the 658‐bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene was 100% congruent with the morphological identification. Seven species were identified: Lutzomyia cruciata (Coquillett 1907), Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva 1912), Psathyromyia shannoni (Dyar 1929), Dampfomyia deleoni (Fairchild & Hertig 1947), Dampfomyia beltrani/steatopyga (Vargas & Díaz‐Nájera 1951), Bichromomyia olmeca olmeca (Vargas & Díaz‐Nájera, 1959), and Brumptomyia mesai (Sherlock 1962). Mean intraspecific divergence ranged from 0.12% to 1.22%, while interspecific distances ranged from 11.59% to 19.29%. Neighbor‐joining (NJ) analysis using the Kimura 2‐parameter model also showed specimens of the same species to be clustered together. The study provides the first cox1 sequences for three species of sand flies and indicates the utility of DNA barcoding for phlebotomine sand flies species identification in southeastern Mexico.  相似文献

In Florida and Cuba the stone crab Menippe mercenaria (Say, 1818) is under strong fishing-pressure; nevertheless in the Mexican Caribbean it is considered as sub-utilized and poorly known resource. Artificial shelters ("condominios cubanos") were used to study relative abundance, age structure, claw length-carapace amplitude relation, and population in three seasons and four sectors at Bahía Ascension, Quintana Roo, Mexico. The abundance varied according to the sector and sampling season: population was higher in the south and during the north wind ("Nortes") season (January to March). The carapace amplitude was directly proportional to claw length (r2 = 0.83, 0.97 and 0.89; p < 0.05 in females, males and total, respectively). The results suggest that specimens with 37.5 and 67.5 mm of carapace amplitude are the most limited regarding refuge availability in the Bay.  相似文献

Ochtodes searlesii Mendoza‐González, Mateo‐Cid et Sentíes sp. nov. is described from Michoacán, tropical Mexican Pacific, on the basis of comparative morphology and rbcL sequence analysis. It is distinguished from other Ochtodes species by its erect axes arising from an encrusting base, its small terete fronds, regularly dichotomously branched axes, and obliquely divided zonate tetrasporangia. Phylogenetic analyses showed that three Pacific Mexican samples, from Caletilla, Zapote and La Majahuita (Michoacán), were identical and formed a distinctive and well supported Clade segregated from other species of Ochtodes from Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, Guadeloupe and Mexico. The Mexican entity is morphologically distinct from other Ochtodes species as well. On this basis we propose a new Ochtodes species.  相似文献

Vanilla planifolia, a highly prized tropical crop, produces commercial, vanilla. We investigated RAPD genetic diversity and geographical structure within V. planifolia. Multivariate analyses revealed three separate geographical groups of V. planifolia: a) a Costa Rican group; b) a Mexican group consisting only of cultivated plants from north of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt; and c) a Mexican group from Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Quintana Roo, which are wild and wild-sourced cultivated plants. It appears likely that human action has resulted in movement of northern Mexican plants into the region south of the Volcanic Belt. When supposed translocants are included, a significantly higher genetic diversity is observed south of the Volcanic Belt compared to northern Mexico. Furthermore, cultivar names used in V. planifolia do not appear to reflect genetically defined groups.  相似文献

A pollen record of a Late Holocene sediment core from the Mexican Caribbean coast (Quintana Roo) shows the development and changes of a mangrove system. Humid conditions seem to have persisted for the period approximately 2500–1500 14C yr BP (pollen zone I), and mangrove Rhizophora mangle dominated with a good representation of elements from the nearby semi-evergreen tropical forest. During the period approximately 1500–1200 14C yr BP (pollen zone II) the mangrove Conocarpus erecta dominated. R. mangle almost disappeared and other taxa appeared, suggesting drier climatic conditions and generally more open vegetation. This dry period coincided with the period of the Maya cultural decline. The following period (pollen zone III, approximately 1200–1000 14C yr BP) was characterized by the recovery of R. mangle, indicating more humid conditions than in the preceding pollen zone. Pollen zone IV (approximately 1000 14C yr BP till present) suggests a drier period reoccuring with C. erecta; this marks the transition to present day conditions.  相似文献

Some dinoflagellates with benthic habits are related to ciguatera intoxication by fish consumption, especially in tropical areas. In the Mexican Caribbean, ciguatera is relatively common, but only one paper seems to have been published on the subject, and there are very few publicactions on phytoplankton and benthic microalgae. Material collected along the coast of the State of Quintana Roo with phytoplankton net (54 mm) and directly from sediment and epiphytes of macroscopic plants, was searched for toxic and other associated dinoflagellates. Samples were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy. Morphological characters were useful for species identification, but eventually physiological, ecological and molecular characters could also be used. Three species of Gambierdiscus, related to the production of ciguatera toxins, were identified: G. belizeanus, G. toxicus and G. yasumotoi. They are distributed in shallow coastal areas, including coastal lagoons.  相似文献

Implementing new and effective control strategies to reduce populations of invasive species is needed to offset their negative impacts worldwide. The spread of Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois sp.) through much of the western Atlantic has been one of the most publicized marine invasions globally, and is considered a major biodiversity threat whose longer-term impacts are still uncertain. Marine managers have explored several strategies to control lionfish, such as fishing tournaments (derbies) and commercial fisheries. Commercial fisheries for invasive species are controversial because they could create perverse incentives to maintain these populations, and they have never been demonstrated to successfully control target populations. We analyzed the development and impacts of an opportunistic fishing operation aimed at commercializing invasive lionfish in the Mexican Caribbean. We examined official lionfish landings and compared them to catches from lionfish derbies and lionfish densities from locations in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. We found that commercial fishers, particularly from one fishing cooperative on Cozumel Island, were effective at catching lionfish, with landings peaking at 20,000 individuals in 2014. This number is comparable to the number of lionfish caught in derbies across the entire Caribbean in the same year. Ecological survey data suggest a?~?60% reduction in lionfish density on Cozumel reefs over two years (2013–2015), matching the peak landings in the lionfish fishing operation. However, the fishery’s apparent success as a control tool during the time window analyzed seemed to trigger its own demise: a decline in landings was followed by evaporating market interest and loss of economic viability. If fisheries are to be established and used as management strategies to control future invasions, managers must develop strategic collaboration plans with commercial fishing partners.

The alpha diversity of Laurencia sensu stricto, as well as the majority of the other algal groups along the Mexican Pacific, was underestimated because very few studies had incorporated the use of molecular markers in taxonomic studies, which would allow a more realistic estimation of diversity, incluing new records and new species. The records of Laurencia s.s. for the Eastern Pacific (California, USA to Chile) currently represent 23% of its richness worldwide. In this work, we proposed an updated census of the currently recognized species of Laurencia s.s. for the Mexican Pacific. This checklist reported the occurrence of 22 species that represent 16% of the 137 species worldly recorded. We further included taxonomic remarks, type localities, and a detailed distribution for each species. In addition, we proposed a new species for this region, Laurencia mutueae sp. nov., based on morphological observation as well as phylogenetic analyses. The distribution in the Mexican Pacific revealed that the highest records of species were for the sub‐temperate region, while the localities along the Mexican tropical Pacific were poorly recorded. The scarcity of floristic affinities between the eastern and the western and central parts of the North Pacific Ocean was hypothesized to be a consequence of a strong isolation and hard barriers, such as the water masses between these regions.  相似文献

The benthic flora, and the vegetative and reproductive characters of the algae Batophora oerstedii and B. occidentalis (Chlorophyta) were recorded from five sites of Chetumal Bay, Quintana Roo, Mexico. A sewage gradient has been reported along those sites. Plants were sampled in May and October 1999, which corresponded to dry and rainy seasons, respectively. Forty taxa were found, 11 are new records for the Chetumal Bay, and 6 are new records for the Mexican Caribbean. Enteromorpha species were present in sites known as rich in organic matter (both from anthropogenic and natural sources). Batophora spp. is the dominant algae in all Chetumal Bay. However, it was absent next to sewage outfalls. The morphological characters of B. oerstedii and B. occidentalis did not change significantly along the sites reported as polluted. The length and width of gametophores, as well as the diameter of the gametangia were clearly different for both species. Different reproductive strategies may help B. oerstedii and B. occidentalis to closely coexist in the Chetumal Bay.  相似文献

Generic and specific determination among the Laurencia complex is a challenging task. DNA barcoding combined with phenotypic investigations are mandatory for species differentiation. In this study, two morphologically different members of the Laurencia complex were investigated using untargeted 1H‐NMR‐based metabolomics. Twenty‐one population samples were collected in order to evaluate both temporal and geographical homogeneity. Data obtained from 1H‐NMR analysis followed by statistical analysis allowed a clear separation of all the samples into two groups. DNA mitochondrial tests confirmed this pattern and identified the two species as Laurenciella sp. and Laurencia obtusa. In addition, metabolites responsible of this discrimination were investigated directly in crude extracts by 13C‐NMR using an in‐house computer‐assisted method. The combination of both untargeted (1H) and targeted (13C) NMR‐based metabolomic approaches proves to be a powerful and complementary approach to discriminate species from the Laurencia complex.  相似文献

Gracilariopsis tenuifrons is a red alga living in the upper intertidal zone of Playa de Carmen (Quintana Roo, Mexico), where abiotic stressors occur over the year. A high antioxidant capacity has been previously demonstrated for G. tenuifrons from the Mexican Caribbean. In this study, we evaluated the photosynthetic activity, pigment composition and antioxidant activity of G. tenuifrons under different culture conditions. G. tenuifrons was submitted to different irradiance intensities (100 and 1,000 μmol photons m?2 s?1), UV-B radiation and two nitrogen treatments (enriched and non-enriched). An effective defence system against oxidative stress in G. tenuifrons was induced by UV-B radiation coupled with high photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) with an increase in chlorophyll a, carotenoids content and antioxidant activity (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Folin-Ciocalteu antioxidant assays). Our study has confirmed the hypothesis that G. tenuifrons is a stress-tolerant tropical species, and its tolerance strongly depends on nitrogen availability in the medium.  相似文献

This study documents the stingless bees' (Meliponinae) recent displacement in the Yucatan (Quintana Roo, Mexico) and the effects of human‐induced ecosystem disturbance on bee diversity. Point observations of flower‐visiting bees were made along transects in three communities with different degrees of human‐induced ecosystem disturbance. The community with the greatest anthropogenic disturbance had lower overall species richness of stingless bees and the highest degree of dominance of the Africanized honeybee (Apis mellifera scutellata), while the area with the most intact ecosystem had the highest diversity of stingless bees, though A. mellifera was still the dominant species. We observed aggressive competitive behavior involving physical attacks by A. mellifera against stingless bees, indicating that Africanized honeybees are adopting new behaviors to compete better with dominant native pollinator species.  相似文献

Laurencia Lamouroux (Rhodophyta) was recently separated into three genera–Laurencia, Chondrophycus (Tokida et Saito) Garbary et Harper and Osmundea Stackhouse – each of which was newly defined based on vegetative and reproductive structures. In this study, the previously unknown vegetative and reproductive morphology of two Australian endemic species of Laurencia, L. clavata Sonder and L. elata (C. Agardh) Harvey, was studied, particularly in the context of the revised generic delineation. These species exhibit vegetative axes with four pericentral cells and trichoblast-type spermatangial development. Tetrasporangia are abaxially produced from the existing third and fourth pericentral cells. L. clavata has terete thalli with distinctive verticillate branching and is similar to Chondria C. Agardh, rather than to Laurencia, in having an unusually marked constriction at the base of the branches and starch accumulation in subcortical and medullary cells. Compared to Laurencia, apical cells of this species exhibit a less oblique division ; the resulting recognizable axial cell rows extend somewhat below the branches, and particularly at a young stage they are also clear throughout branchlets. However, other vegetative and spermatangial structures show that L. clavata is more closely allied to Laurencia than to Chondria, and it is placed in Laurencia. By contrast, L. elata exhibits morphology typical of Laurencia and is characterized by large, robust, compressed thalli with fastigiately distichous branching and an extensive secondary cortex. Furthermore, it appears to be distinct from similar species in sometimes having a parasitic species of Janczewskia Solms-Laubach (Rhodophyta). Taxonomy of Laurencia is discussed on the basis of these and previous studies.  相似文献

A new nematode, Dentiphilometra lutjani n. sp. (Philometridae), is described from gravid females (the male is unknown) collected from the body musculature of the marine perciform fish gray snapper, Lutjanus griseus (Lutjanidae), from the Bay of Chetumal and southern coast of Quintana Roo, off the Caribbean coast of Mexico. The new species differs from the only other congener, Dentiphilometra monopteri, from the swamp eel Monopterus albus in China, mainly in the body length of gravid female (15.40-53.21 mm), the shape of the posterior body end (not markedly narrowed, with low caudal projections), the esophageal gland (maximum width near its posterior end), and the length (344-483 microm) of larvae from the uterus; both species also differ in their host types (marine perciform fish vs. freshwater swamp eel) and geographical distribution (Mexico vs. China).  相似文献
