Measurements of Sorbus stomata size and density, maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), variable-to-initial fluorescence ratio (Fv/F0) and potential electron acceptor capacity (‘area’) were performed during leaf development in four parental diploid species, S. aria, S. aucuparia, S. chamaemespilus, S. torminalis, and two hybrid species, S. hazslinszkyana and S. intermedia. In fully expanded mature leaves, stomata lengths and densities were significantly larger in the shrub S. chamaemespilus than in the five tree species. The best performance of both the Fv/Fm and the Fv/F0 ratio was recorded in S. intermedia, whereas S. chamaemespilus had the highest value of ‘area’. From a physiological point of view, the results of this study showed that the photosystem II reaction centers remained intact functionally through all phenological stages of leaf expansion for all examined species of Sorbus.  相似文献

Interspecific hybridization and polyploidy are pivotal processes in plant evolution and speciation. The fate of new hybrid and polyploid taxa is determined by their ability to reproduce either sexually or asexually. Hybrids and allopolyploids with odd chromosome numbers are frequently sterile but some establish themselves through asexual reproduction (vegetative or apomixis). This allows novel genotypes to become established by isolating them from gene flow and leads to complex patterns of variation. The genus Sorbus is a good example of taxonomic complexity arising from the combined effects of hybridization, polyploidy and apomixis. The Avon Gorge in South‐west Britain contains the greatest diversity of Sorbus in Europe, with three endemic species and four putative endemic novel hybrids among its 15 native Sorbus taxa. We used a combination of nuclear microsatellite and chloroplast DNA markers to investigate the evolutionary relationships among these Sorbus taxa within the Avon Gorge. We confirm the genetic identity of putative novel taxa and show that hybridization involving sexual diploid species, primarily S. aria and S. torminalis and polyploid facultative apomictic species from subgenus Aria, has been responsible for generating this biodiversity. Importantly our data show that this creative evolutionary process is ongoing within the Avon Gorge. Conservation strategies for the rare endemic Sorbus taxa should therefore consider all Sorbus taxa within the Gorge and must strive to preserve this evolutionary process rather than simply the individual rare taxa that it produces.  相似文献

The Franconian Alb (Bavaria, Germany) is rich in endemic Sorbus taxa, considered as apomictic microspecies and derived by hybridization between Sorbus aria aggregate and Sorbus torminalis (Sorbus latifolia aggregate). Molecular studies using the AFLP technique, neighbour joining, Bayesian clustering, principal coordinate analysis (PCo) and voucher studies were used to investigate genetic structure and origin of adult plants and cultivated offspring of three endemic S. latifolia taxa, namely Sorbus cordigastensis, Sorbus franconica and Sorbus adeana and probable parental species from the S. aria agg. and S. torminalis. The S. latifolia taxa, adults and progeny, showed low genetic variability and a more or less clonal structure, confirming an apomictic mode of reproduction. The investigated S. latifolia taxa were remarkably different among each other, confirming their status as microspecies. The AFLP data confirmed the hybrid origin of the S. latifolia taxa, they were 1.3–1.5 times more closely related to S. aria agg. than to S. torminalis. The S. aria agg. showed a complicate genetic structure and fell into four main groups, two intermediate groups besides Sorbus pannonica and Sorbus aria sensu stricto (S. aria s.str.). Some progeny of S. pannonica was more variable than expected and clustered partly with other groups indicating gene flow within S. aria agg. Different subgroups of the S. aria aggregate may be parental for the S. latifolia taxa, contributing to the remarkable genetic distances between them.  相似文献

Due to its nutritive and medicinal properties, berries of some Sorbus species are used for the preparation of jams and jelly as well as in traditional medicine. On the other hand, their chemical composition is not much studied especially of those grown in Balkan Peninsula. We have analyzed individual phenolics, tocopherols, carotenoids and chlorophylls using HPLC in berries from Sorbus aucuparia and Sorbus aria collected in different localities in Serbia and Montenegro together with the amounts of total phenolics and proanthocyanidins as well as their radical scavenging activity against DPPH radical. Berries of S. aucuparia were richer source of polyphenolics in comparision with S. aria and, regardless the species and locality, caffeoylquinic acids such as neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acid were the most abundant compounds. Among analyzed tocopherols the most abundant in all samples was α‐tocopherol (0.48 – 19.85 μg/g dw) as it was β‐carotene among carotenoids (mean concentration of 0.98 μg/g dw in S. aucuparia and 0.40 μg/g dw in S. aria, respectively). Correlation between total phenolics and DPPH radical scavenging activity was noticed. Our study represents comprehensive report on chemical composition of S. aucuparia and S. aria which could contribute to a better understanding of their quality.  相似文献

Influential factors of global change affect plant carbon uptake and biomass simultaneously. Although the effects from warming and precipitation change have been extensive studied separately, the responses of plant biomass, photosynthesis, and lipid peroxidation to the interaction of these factors are still not fully understood. In this study, we examined the physiological responses of two dominant plant species from grasslands of northern China with different functional traits to combinations of five simulated warming patterns and five simulated precipitation patterns in environment‐controlled chambers. Our results showed that the biomass, net CO2 assimilation rate (Pn), maximal efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry (Fv/Fm), and chlorophyll content (Chl) of Stipa grandis and Leymus chinensis were enhanced by moderate warming and plus precipitation, but they declined drastically with high temperature and drought. High temperature and drought also led to significant malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation, which had a negative correlation with leaf biomass. The lower level of lipid peroxidation in leaves of S. grandis suggests that this species is better protected from oxidative damage under heat stress, drought stress and their interactive conditions than L. chinensis. Using the subordinate function values method, we found S. grandis to be more sensitive to climate change than L. chinensis and the gross biomass and root biomass of S. grandis and the leaf biomass of L. chinensis were most sensitive to climate change. Furthermore, the Pn of both S. grandis and L. chinensis had a significant linear relationship with Fv/Fm and Chl, indicating that carbon assimilation may be caused by nonstomatal limitations.  相似文献

Sphagnum, the main genus which forms boreal peat, is strongly affected by N and S deposition and raised temperature, but the physiological mechanisms behind the responses are largely unknown. We measured maximum photosynthetic rate (NPmax), maximum efficiency of photosystem II [variable fluorescence (F v)/maximum fluorescence yield (F m)] and concentrations of N, C, chlorophyll and carotenoids as responses to N and S addition and increased temperature in Sphagnum balticum (a widespread species in the northern peatlands) in a 12-year factorial experiment. NPmax did not differ between control (0.2 g N m−2 year−1) and high N (3.0 g N m−2 year−1), but was higher in the mid N treatment (1.5 g N m−2 year−1). N, C, carotenoids and chlorophyll concentration increased in shoot apices after N addition. F v/F m did not differ between N treatments. Increased temperature (+3.6°C) had a small negative effect on N concentration, but had no significant effect on NPmax or F v/F m. Addition of 2 g S m−2 year−1 showed a weak negative effect on NPmax and F v/F m. Our results suggest a unimodal response of NPmax to N addition and tissue N concentration in S. balticum, with an optimum N concentration for photosynthetic rate of ~13 mg N g−1. In conclusion, high S deposition may reduce photosynthetic capacity in Sphagnum, but the negative effects may be relaxed under high N availability. We suggest that previously reported negative effects on Sphagnum productivity under high N deposition are not related to negative effects on the photosynthetic apparatus, but differences in optimum N concentration among Sphagnum species may affect their competitive ability under different N deposition regimes.  相似文献

Primary photochemistry of photosystem II (F v/F m) of the Antarctic hair grass Deschampsia antarctica growing in the field (Robert Island, Maritime Antarctic) and in the laboratory was studied. Laboratory plants were grown at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 180 μmol m−2 s−1 and an optimal temperature (13 ± 1.5°C) for net photosynthesis. Subsequently, two groups of plants were exposed to low temperature (4 ± 1.5°C day/night) under two levels of PPFD (180 and 800 μmol m−2 s−1) and a control group was kept at 13 ± 1.5°C and PPFD of 800 μmol m−2 s−1. Chlorophyll fluorescence was measured during several days in field plants and weekly in the laboratory plants. Statistically significant differences were found in F v/F m (=0.75–0.83), F 0 and F m values of field plants over the measurement period between days with contrasting irradiances and temperature levels, suggesting that plants in the field show high photosynthetic efficiency. Laboratory plants under controlled conditions and exposed to low temperature under two light conditions showed significantly lower F v/F m and F m. Moreover, they presented significantly less chlorophyll and carotenoid content than field plants. The differences in the performance of the photosynthetic apparatus between field- and laboratory-grown plants indicate that measurements performed in ex situ plants should be interpreted with caution.  相似文献

The response of N (nitrate) starved cells of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi to a pulse of new N were measured to investigate rapid cellular and photosynthetic recovery kinetics. The changes of multiple parameters were followed over 24 h. In P. tricornutum, the recovery of Fv/Fm (the maximum quantum yield of PS II) and σPSII (the functional absorption cross‐section for PSII) started within the first hour, much earlier than other parameters. Cellular pigments did not recover during the 24 h but the chlorophyll (chl) a/carotenoid ratios increased to levels measured in the controls. Cell division was independent of the recovery of chl a. In E. huxleyi, the recovery of Fv/Fm and σPSII started after an hour, synchronous with the increase in cellular organic N and chl a with pigments fully recovered within 14 h. P. tricornutum prioritized the recovery of its photosynthetic functions and cell divisions while E. huxleyi did not follow this pattern. We hypothesize that the different recovery strategies between the two species allow P. tricornutum to be more competitive when N pulses are introduced into N‐limited water while E. huxleyi is adapted to N scarce waters where such pulses are infrequent. These findings are consistent with successional patterns observed in coastal environments. This is one of only a few studies exploring recovery kinetics of cellular functions and photosynthesis after nitrogen stress in phytoplankton. Our results can be used to enhance ecological models linking phytoplankton traits to species diversity and community structure.  相似文献

Tropical plants are sensitive to chilling temperatures above zero but it is still unclear whether photosystem I (PSI) or photosystem II (PSII) of tropical plants is mainly affected by chilling temperatures. In this study, the effect of 4°C associated with various light densities on PSII and PSI was studied in the potted seedlings of four tropical evergreen tree species grown in an open field, Khaya ivorensis, Pometia tomentosa, Dalbergia odorifera, and Erythrophleum guineense. After 8 h chilling exposure at the different photosynthetic flux densities of 20, 50, 100, 150 μmol m−2 s−1, the maximum quantum yield of PSII (F v /F m) in all of the four species decreased little, while the quantity of efficient PSI complex (P m) remained stable in all species except E. guineense. However, after chilling exposure under 250 μmol m−2 s−1 for 24 h, F v /F m was severely photoinhibited in all species whereas P m was relative stable in all plants except E. guineense. At the chilling temperature of 4°C, electron transport from PSII to PSI was blocked because of excessive reduction of primary electron acceptor of PSII. F v /F m in these species except E. guineense recovered to ~90% after 8 h recovery in low light, suggesting the dependence of the recovery of PSII on moderate PSI and/or PSII activity. These results suggest that PSII is more sensitive to chilling temperature under the moderate light than PSI in tropical trees, and the photoinhibition of PSII and closure of PSII reaction centers can serve to protect PSI.  相似文献

While light limitation can inhibit bloom formation in dinoflagellates, the potential for high‐intensity photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) to inhibit blooms by causing stress or damage has not been well‐studied. We measured the effects of high‐intensity PAR on the bloom‐forming dinoflagellates Alexandrium fundyense and Heterocapsa rotundata. Various physiological parameters (photosynthetic efficiency Fv/Fm, cell permeability, dimethylsulfoniopropionate [DMSP], cell volume, and chlorophyll‐a content) were measured before and after exposure to high‐intensity natural sunlight in short‐term light stress experiments. In addition, photosynthesis‐irradiance (P‐E) responses were compared for cells grown at different light levels to assess the capacity for photophysiological acclimation in each species. Experiments revealed distinct species‐specific responses to high PAR. While high light decreased Fv/Fm in both species, A. fundyense showed little additional evidence of light stress in short‐term experiments, although increased membrane permeability and intracellular DMSP indicated a response to handling. P‐E responses further indicated a high light‐adapted species with Chl‐a inversely proportional to growth irradiance and no evidence of photoinhibition; reduced maximum per‐cell photosynthesis rates suggest a trade‐off between photoprotection and C fixation in high light‐acclimated cells. Heterocapsa rotundata cells, in contrast, swelled in response to high light and sometimes lysed in short‐term experiments, releasing DMSP. P‐E responses confirmed a low light‐adapted species with high photosynthetic efficiencies associated with trade‐offs in the form of substantial photoinhibition and a lack of plasticity in Chl‐a content. These contrasting responses illustrate that high light constrains dinoflagellate community composition through species‐specific stress effects, with consequences for bloom formation and ecological interactions within the plankton.  相似文献

Changes in climate, land management and fire regime have contributed to woody species expansion into grasslands and savannas worldwide. In the USA, Pinus ponderosa P.&C. Lawson and Juniperus virginiana L. are expanding into semiarid grasslands of Nebraska and other regions of the Great Plains. We examined P. ponderosa and J. virginiana seedling response to soil water content, one of the most important limiting factors in semiarid grasslands, to provide insight into their success in the region. Photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII, maximum carboxylation velocity, maximum rate of electron transport, stomatal limitation to photosynthesis, water potential, root‐to‐shoot ratio, and needle nitrogen content were followed under gradual soil water depletion for 40 days. J. virginiana maintained lower Ls, higher A, gs, and initial Fv/Fm, and displayed a more gradual decline in Vcmax and Jmax with increasing water deficit compared to P. ponderosa. J. virginiana also invested more in roots relative to shoots compared to P. ponderosa. Fv/Fm showed high PSII resistance to dehydration in both species. Photoinhibition was observed at ~30% of field capacity. Soil water content was a better predictor of A and gs than Ψ, indicating that there are other growth factors controlling physiological processes under increased water stress. The two species followed different strategies to succeed in semiarid grasslands. P. ponderosa seedlings behaved like a drought‐avoidant species with strong stomatal control, while J. virginiana was more of a drought‐tolerant species, maintaining physiological activity at lower soil water content. Differences between the studied species and the ecological implications are discussed.  相似文献

Proceeding from three previously derived expressions for the intensity of nitrification in soil as a function of time (logΣN=K.logt+q), as a function of incubation moisture (logΣN=A.pF i+B), as a function of initial moisture (logΣN=C.pF v+D), it was shown that the nitrification intensity as a function of time and of moisture can be expressed by the bilinear function log ΣN=a.pF i.logT+b.pF i+c.logt+d; as a function of time and of initial moisture by the bilinear function logΣ=N=a.pF v.logt+b.pF v+c.logt+d; as a function of initial and incubation moisture by the bilinear function log ΣN=a.pF ipF v+b.pF i+c.pF v+d. The intensity of nitrification as a function of time, incubation moisture and initial moisture may be expressed by the multilinear function log ΣN=a.pF i.pF v.logt+b.pF i.pF v+c.pF i.logt+d.pF v.logt+e .pF i+f.pF v=g.logt+h. This function is valid for all the incubation moistures lying between pF i 3.0 and 4.0 and for all initial moistures between 3.5 and 5.9 provided that the incubation temperature remains constant.  相似文献

The thermal dissipation technique is widely used to estimate transpiration of individual trees and forest stands, but there are conflicting reports regarding its accuracy. We compared the rate of water uptake by stems of six tree species in potometers with sap flow (F S) estimates derived from thermal dissipation sensors to evaluate the accuracy of the technique. To include the full range of xylem anatomies (i.e., diffuse-porous, ring-porous, and tracheid), we used saplings of sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides), white oak (Quercus alba), American elm (Ulmus americana), shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata), and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). In almost all instances, estimated F S deviated substantially from actual F S, with the discrepancy in cumulative F S ranging from 9 to 55%. The thermal dissipation technique generally underestimated F S. There were a number of potential causes of these errors, including species characteristics and probe construction and installation. Species with the same xylem anatomy generally did not show similar relationships between estimated and actual F S, and the largest errors were in species with diffuse-porous (Populus deltoides, 34%) and tracheid (Pinus taeda, 55%) xylem anatomies, rather than ring-porous species Quercus alba (9%) and Ulmus americana (15%) as we had predicted. New species-specific α and β parameter values only modestly improved the accuracy of F S estimates. However, the relationship between the estimated and actual F S was linear in all cases and a simple calibration based on the slope of this relationship reduced the error to 1–4% in five of the species, and to 8% in Liquidambar styraciflua. Our calibration approach compensated simultaneously for variation in species characteristics and sensor construction and use. We conclude that species-specific calibrations can substantially increase the accuracy of the thermal dissipation technique.  相似文献

Abies faxoniana is a key species in reforestation processes in the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau of China. The changes in growth, photosynthesis and nutrient status of A. faxoniana seedlings exposed to enhanced ultraviolet-B (UV-B), nitrogen supply and their combination were investigated. The experimental design included two levels of UV-B treatments (ambient UV-B, 11.02 KJ m−2 day−1; enhanced UV-B, 14.33 KJ m−2 day−1) and two nitrogen levels (0; 20 g N m−2). The results indicated that: (1) enhanced UV-B significantly caused a marked decline in growth parameters, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), photosynthetic pigments and F v/F m, (2) supplemental nitrogen supply increased the accumulation of total biomass, Pn, photosynthetic pigments and F v/F m under ambient UV-B, whereas supplemental nitrogen supply reduced Pn, and not affect biomass under enhanced UV-B, (3) enhanced UV-B or nitrogen supply changed the concentration of nutrient elements of various organs.  相似文献

  • The potential resilience of shrub species to environmental change deserves attention in those areas threatened by climate change, such as the Mediterranean Basin. We asked if leaves produced under different climate conditions through the winter season to spring can highlight the leaf traits involved in determining potential resilience of three Cistus spp. to changing environmental conditions and to what extent intraspecific differences affect such a response.
  • We analysed carbon assimilation, maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and leaf morphological control of the photosynthetic process in leaves formed through the winter season into spring in C. creticus subsp. eriocephalus (CE), C. salvifolius (CS) and C. monspeliensis (CM) grown from seed of different provenances under common garden conditions.
  • Intraspecific differences were found in Fv/Fm for CE and CS. Carbon assimilation‐related parameters were not affected by provenance. Moreover, our analysis highlighted that the functional relationships investigated can follow seasonal changes and revealed patterns originating from species‐specific differences in LMA arising during the favourable period.
  • Cistus spp. have great ability to modify the structure and function of their leaves in the mid‐term in order to cope with changing environmental conditions. The Fv/Fm response to chilling reveals that susceptibility to photoinhibition is a trait under selection in Cistus species. Concerning carbon assimilation, differing ability to control stomatal opening was highlighted between species. Moreover, seasonal changes of the functional relationships investigated can have predictable consequences on species leaf turnover strategies.

Response of two Antarctic bryophytes to stratospheric ozone depletion   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We report a study which measured changes to the radiative environment arising from stratospheric O3 depletion at Rothera Point on the western Antarctic Peninsula (67°S, 68°W) and subsequent associations between these changes and the pigmentation and maximum quantum yield of photochemistry (Fv/Fm) of two Antarctic bryophytes, the liverwort Cephaloziella varians and the moss Sanionia uncinata. We found a strong relationship between O3 column depth and the ratio of UV‐B to PAR irradiance (FUV‐B/FPAR) recorded at ground level. Weaker, but significant, associations were also found between O3 column depth and noon irradiances and daily doses of unweighted and biologically effective UV‐B radiation received at ground level. Regression analyses indicated that FUV‐B/FPAR and daily dose of unweighted UV‐B were best predictors for concentrations of total carotenoids and UV‐B screening pigments extracted from bryophyte tissues. Concentrations of these pigments were loosely but significantly positively associated with O3‐dependent irradiance parameters. HPLC analyses of carotenoids also suggested that both species increased the synthesis of neoxanthin during periods of O3 depletion. Violaxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin and b,bββ‐carotene concentrations were also apparently influenced by O3 reduction, but not consistently across both bryophyte species. Concentrations of chlorophylls a and b were apparently unaffected by O3 depletion. No direct associations between Fv/Fm and O3‐dependent irradiance parameters were found. However stepwise multiple regression analyses suggested that the production of UV‐B screening pigments conferred protection from elevated FUV‐B/FPAR on Fv/Fm in both species and that carotenoids conferred protection on Fv/Fm in Sanionia. Our data suggest that changes to the radiative environment associated with stratospheric O3 depletion influence the pigmentation of two Antarctic bryophytes, but that Fv/Fm is unaffected, at least in part because of rapid synthesis of protective pigments.  相似文献

The red macroalgae Hydropuntia cornea, Gracilariopsis longissima and Halopithys incurva were cultured for 14 d under laboratory conditions, in enriched seawater with a high nutrient content (N‐NH4+ and P‐PO43?) and two radiation regimes: PAR (400–700 nm) and PAB (280–700 nm). The UV radiation effects under high availability of nutrients on growth, photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, carotenoids and phycobiliproteins), photosynthetic activity and biochemical composition were studied. Maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) was not significantly different among the PAR and PAB treatments during the experiment. However, the maximum electronic transport rate (ETRmax) increased over time, showing the highest values in PAR for H. incurva and H. cornea, whereas for G. longissima it was found in PAB. Photosynthetic efficiency (αETR) decreased over time in the first two species, but increased in G. longissima. Saturation irradiance (EkETR) and maximum nonphotochemical quenching (NPQmax) increased in PAB with time up to 80% and 30%, respectively, indicating a photosynthetic acclimatization like that of sun‐type algae. Five MAAs were identified in all species using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The total content of MAAs increased over time, being 30% higher in H. incurva, 40% in G. longissima and 50% in H. cornea in PAB than in the PAR treatment. Finally, the antioxidant activity was also higher in the PAB treatment. All of the species presented an effective mechanism of photoprotection based on the accumulation of photoprotective compounds with antioxidant activity, as well as a high dissipation of excitation energy (high NPQmax).  相似文献

We investigated the relationships of photosynthetic capacity (P nsat, near light-saturated net photosynthetic rate measured at 1,200 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD) to photosystem II efficiency (F v/F m) and to photochemical reflectance index [PRI = (R 531 − R 570)/(R 531 + R 570)] of Pinus taiwanensis Hay. needles at high (2,600 m a.s.l) and low-elevation (800 m a.s.l) sites through different seasons. Results indicate that at high-elevation site, P nsat, F v/F m and PRI (both measured at predawn) paralleled in general with the air temperature. On the coolest measuring day with the minimum air temperature dropping to −2°C, P nsat could decrease to ca. 15% of its highest value, which was measured in autumn. At low-elevation site, with the minimum air temperature of 10–12°C in cooler season and almost no seasonal variation of F v/F m, P nsat dropped to ca. 65% of its highest value and PRI decreased ca. 0.02 in winter. Even though seasonal variation of P nsat was affected by many factors, it was still closely related to PRI based on statistical analyses using data from both sites, through different seasons. On the contrary, seasonal variation of F v/F m of P. taiwanensis needles was influenced mainly by low temperature at high elevation. Therefore, the correlation of P nsat − F v/F m was lower than that of P nsat − PRI when data combined from both high- and low-elevation sites were analyzed. It is concluded that predawn PRI could be used as an indicator to estimate the seasonal potential of photosynthetic capacity of P. taiwanensis grown at low- and high-elevations of sub-tropical Taiwan.  相似文献
