For many commercial potato cultivars, tuber yield is optimal at average daytime temperatures in the range of 14–22 °C. Further rises in ambient temperature can reduce or completely inhibit potato tuber production, with damaging consequences for both producer and consumer. The aim of this study was to use a genetic screen based on a model tuberization assay to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with enhanced tuber yield. A candidate gene encoding HSc70 was identified within one of the three QTL intervals associated with elevated yield in a Phureja–Tuberosum hybrid diploid potato population (06H1). A particular HSc70 allelic variant was linked to elevated yield in the 06H1 progeny. Expression of this allelic variant was much higher than other alleles, particularly on exposure to moderately elevated temperature. Transient expression of this allele in Nicotiana benthamiana resulted in significantly enhanced tolerance to elevated temperature. An TA repeat element was present in the promoter of this allele, but not in other HSc70 alleles identified in the population. Expression of the HSc70 allelic variant under its native promoter in the potato cultivar Desiree resulted in enhanced HSc70 expression at elevated temperature. This was reflected in greater tolerance to heat stress as determined by improved yield under moderately elevated temperature in a model nodal cutting tuberization system and in plants grown from stem cuttings. Our results identify HSc70 expression level as a significant factor influencing yield stability under moderately elevated temperature and identify specific allelic variants of HSc70 for the induction of thermotolerance via conventional introgression or molecular breeding approaches.  相似文献

Potato plants (Solanum tuberosum L.) were grown at differentair and soil temperatures to determine the effects of high-temperaturestress on root, tuber, and shoot growth. Cooling the soil (17–27C) at high air temperatures (30–40 C) relieved noneof the visible symptoms of heat stress on shoot growth; norwas the degree of induction to tuberize in leaves increased,as reflected in tuberization of leaf-bud cuttings. Heating thesoil (27–35 C) at cool (17–27 C) air temperatureshad no apparent detrimental effect on shoot growth or inductionof leaves to tuberize. However, in each case hot soil largelyeliminated tuber development. In one experiment stolons grewup out of the hot soil and formed aerial tubers upon reachingthe cool air. When leaf-bud cuttings from induced plants wereused as a model system, high soil temperatures inhibited tuberdevelopment from the buried leaf buds, in the absence of anyroot growth. Apparently the induction of leaves to tuberizeis affected principally by air rather than soil temperature, but expression of the signal to tuberize can be blocked by highsoil temperature. To determine the effects of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on the temperature‐dependent photosynthetic properties, we measured gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence at various leaf temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40°C) in 1‐year‐old seedlings of the Japanese white birch (Betula platyphylla var. japonica), grown in a phytotron under natural daylight at two [CO2] levels (ambient: 400 µmol mol?1 and elevated: 800 µmol mol?1) and limited N availability (90 mg N plant?1). Plants grown under elevated [CO2] exhibited photosynthetic downregulation, indicated by a decrease in the carboxylation capacity of Rubisco. At temperatures above 30°C, the net photosynthetic rates of elevated‐CO2‐grown plants exceeded those grown under ambient [CO2] when compared at their growth [CO2]. Electron transport rates were significantly lower in elevated‐CO2‐grown plants than ambient‐CO2‐grown ones at temperatures below 25°C. However, no significant difference was observed in the fraction of excess light energy [(1 ? qP)× Fv′/Fm′] between CO2 treatments across the temperature range. The quantum yield of regulated non‐photochemical energy loss was significantly higher in elevated‐CO2‐grown plants than ambient, when compared at their respective growth [CO2] below 25°C. These results suggest that elevated‐CO2‐induced downregulation might not exacerbate the temperature‐dependent susceptibility to photoinhibition, because reduced energy consumption by electron transport was compensated for by increased thermal energy dissipation at low temperatures.  相似文献

Effect of High Temperature on Photosynthesis in Potatoes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of high temperatures on the rate of photosynthesiswas studied in several potato varieties. Temperatures of upto 38 °C did not cause a reduction in the photosynthesisof plants that had been grown at these temperatures for longperiods prior to measurement. Higher temperatures of 40–42°C, or the transfer of plants from daytime temperature regimesof 22 °C to 32 °C, caused a reduction in net photosynthesis. This reduction was found to be essentially mesophyllic in origin.High temperature was found to be associated with a decreasein stomatal resistance, an increase in transpiration, and alarger difference between air and leaf temperatures. Dark respirationrates and compensation points for CO2 concentration were alsogreater at the high temperatures. It was concluded that thepotato crop can be adopted to grow and have an adequate rateof photosynthesis even at relatively high temperatures. Source-sinkrelationships, which were modified by the later formation oftubers at higher temperatures, did not affect photosynthesisin this study. Varietal differences in resistance to heat stresswere observed, with the clone Cl-884 showing a more efficientcapacity for photosynthesis at temperatures up to 40 °Cthan many commonly grown varieties. Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) generally enhances C3 plant productivity, whereas acute heat stress, which occurs during heat waves, generally elicits the opposite response. However, little is known about the interaction of these two variables, especially during key reproductive phases in important temperate food crops, such as soybean (Glycine max). Here, we grew soybean under elevated [CO2] and imposed high‐ (+9°C) and low‐ (+5°C) intensity heat waves during key temperature‐sensitive reproductive stages (R1, flowering; R5, pod‐filling) to determine how elevated [CO2] will interact with heat waves to influence soybean yield. High‐intensity heat waves, which resulted in canopy temperatures that exceeded optimal growth temperatures for soybean, reduced yield compared to ambient conditions even under elevated [CO2]. This was largely due to heat stress on reproductive processes, especially during R5. Low‐intensity heat waves did not affect yields when applied during R1 but increased yields when applied during R5 likely due to relatively lower canopy temperatures and higher soil moisture, which uncoupled the negative effects of heating on cellular‐ and leaf‐level processes from plant‐level carbon assimilation. Modeling soybean yields based on carbon assimilation alone underestimated yield loss with high‐intensity heat waves and overestimated yield loss with low‐intensity heat waves, thus supporting the influence of direct heat stress on reproductive processes in determining yield. These results have implications for rain‐fed cropping systems and point toward a climatic tipping point for soybean yield when future heat waves exceed optimum temperature.  相似文献

The responses of potato plants (Solanum tuberosum L., cv. Sebago)to high temperatures (32 day/28 C night or 32/18 °C) andgibberellin are similar, in that they promote haulm growth andsuppress tuber production, whereas low temperatures (22/18 °C)abscisic acid and CCC have the opposite effect, promoting tuberproduction and reducing the growth of the haulms. The inhibitoryeffect of the high temperatures on tuber production, under aphotoperiod of 14 h, was almost completely reversed in theseexperiments by the application of CCC, and partly reversed byABA. Single-leaf cuttings from plants grown at the various temperaturesand chemical treatments responded in the same way as the wholeplant. It is suggested that both haulm growth and tuber initiationare influenced by a common hormonal control, and that temperatureexerts its influence by altering the balance between the levelsof endogenous gibberellins and inhibitors. These substancesapparently act directly on the stolon tip, rather than throughtheir general influence on haulm growth. Onion (Allium cepa) was grown in the field within temperature gradient tunnels (providing about ‐2.5°C to +2.5°C from outside temperatures) maintained at either 374 or 532 μmol mol?1 CO2. Plant leaf area was determined non‐destructively at 7 day intervals until the time of bulbing in 12 combinations of temperature and CO2 concentration. Gas exchange was measured in each plot at the time of bulbing, and the carbohydrate content of the leaf (source) and bulb (sink) was determined. Maximum rate of leaf area expansion increased with mean temperature. Leaf area duration and maximum rate of leaf area expansion were not significantly affected by CO2. The light‐saturated rates of leaf photosynthesis (Asat) were greater in plants grown at normal than at elevated CO2 concentrations at the same measurement CO2 concentration. Acclimation of photosynthesis decreased with an increase in growth temperature, and with an increase in leaf nitrogen content at elevated CO2. The ratio of intercellular to atmospheric CO2 (C1/C3 ratio) was 7.4% less for plants grown at elevated compared with normal CO2. Asat in plants grown at elevated CO2 was less than in plants grown at normal CO2 when compared at the same C1. Hence, acclimation of photosynthesis was due both to stomatal acclimation and to limitations to biochemical CO2 fixation. Carbohydrate content of the onion bulbs was greater at elevated than at normal CO2. In contrast, carbohydrate content was less at elevated compared with normal CO2 in the leaf sections in which CO2 exchange was measured at the same developmental stage. Therefore, acclimation of photosynthesis in fully expanded onion leaves was detected despite the absence of localised carbohydrate accumulation in these field‐grown crops.  相似文献

High-temperature stress is a major environmental stress and there are limited studies elucidating its impact on soybean (Glycine max L. Merril.). The objectives of present study were to quantify the effect of high temperature on changes in leaf thickness, number of stomata on adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces, gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and seed yield in soybean. Twelve soybean genotypes were grown at day/night temperatures of 30/22, 34/24, 38/26 and 42/28?°C with an average temperature of 26, 29, 32 and 35?°C, respectively, under greenhouse conditions. One set was also grown under ambient temperature conditions where crop season average maximum, minimum and mean temperatures were 28.0, 22.4 and 25.2?°C, respectively. Significant negative effect of temperature was observed on specific leaf weight (SLW) and leaf thickness. Rate of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and water use efficiency declined as the growing temperatures increased; whereas, intercellular CO2 and transpiration rate were increased. With the increase in temperature chlorophyll fluorescence parameters such as Fv/Fm, qP and PhiPSII declined while there was increase in qN. Number of stomata on both abaxial and adaxial surface of leaf increased significantly with increase in temperatures. The rate of photosynthesis, PhiPSII, qP and SPAD values were positively associated with leaf thickness and SLW. This indicated that reduction in photosynthesis and associated parameters appears to be due to structural changes observed at higher temperatures. The average seed yield was maximum (13.2 g/pl) in plants grown under ambient temperature condition and declined by 8, 14, 51 and 65% as the temperature was increased to 30/22, 34/24, 38/26 and 42/28?°C, respectively.  相似文献

Heat waves already have a large impact on crops and are predicted to become more intense and more frequent in the future. In this study, heat waves were imposed on soybean using infrared heating technology in a fully open‐air field experiment. Five separate heat waves were applied to field‐grown soybean (Glycine max) in central Illinois, three in 2010 and two in 2011. Thirty years of historical weather data from Illinois were analyzed to determine the length and intensity of a regionally realistic heat wave resulting in experimental heat wave treatments during which day and night canopy temperatures were elevated 6 °C above ambient for 3 days. Heat waves were applied during early or late reproductive stages to determine whether and when heat waves had an impact on carbon metabolism and seed yield. By the third day of each heat wave, net photosynthesis (A), specific leaf weight (SLW), and leaf total nonstructural carbohydrate concentration (TNC) were decreased, while leaf oxidative stress was increased. However, A, SLW, TNC, and measures of oxidative stress were no different than the control ca. 12 h after the heat waves ended, indicating rapid physiological recovery from the high‐temperature stress. That end of season seed yield was reduced (~10%) only when heat waves were applied during early pod developmental stages indicates the yield loss had more to do with direct impacts of the heat waves on reproductive process than on photosynthesis. Soybean was unable to mitigate yield loss after heat waves given during late reproductive stages. This study shows that short high‐temperature stress events that reduce photosynthesis and increase oxidative stress resulted in significant losses to soybean production in the Midwest, U.S. The study also suggests that to mitigate heat wave‐induced yield loss, soybean needs improved reproductive and photosynthetic tolerance to high but increasingly common temperatures.  相似文献

The effect of foliar and soil applied paclobutrazol on potato were examined under non-inductive condition in a greenhouse. Single stemmed plants of the cultivar BP1 were grown at 35(±2)/20(±2) °C day/night temperatures, relative humidity of 58%, and a 16 h photoperiod. Twenty-eight days after transplanting paclobutrazol was applied as a foliar spray or soil drench at rates of 0, 45.0, 67.5, and 90.0 mg active ingredient paclobutrazol per plant. Regardless of the method of application paclobutrazol increased chlorophyll a and b contents of the leaf tissue, delayed physiological maturity, and increased tuber fresh mass, dry matter content, specific gravity, dormancy period of the tubers. Paclobutrazol reduced the number of tubers per plant. A significant interaction between rates and methods of paclobutrazol application were observed with respect to plant height and tuber crude protein content. Foliar application gave a higher rate of net photosynthesis than the soil drench. Paclobutrazol significantly reduced total leaf area and increased assimilate partitioning to the tubers. The study clearly showed that paclobutrazol is effective to suppress excessive vegetative growth, favor assimilation to the tubers, increase tuber yield, improve tuber quality and extend tuber dormancy of potato grown in high temperatures and long photoperiods.  相似文献

The temperature optimum of photosynthesis coincides with the average daytime temperature in a species’ native environment. Moderate heat stress occurs when temperatures exceed the optimum, inhibiting photosynthesis and decreasing productivity. In the present study, the temperature response of photosynthesis and the potential for heat acclimation was evaluated for Camelina sativa, a bioenergy crop. The temperature optimum of net CO2 assimilation rate (A) under atmospheric conditions was 30–32?°C and was only slightly higher under non-photorespiratory conditions. The activation state of Rubisco was closely correlated with A at supra-optimal temperatures, exhibiting a parallel decrease with increasing leaf temperature. At both control and elevated temperatures, the modeled response of A to intercellular CO2 concentration was consistent with Rubisco limiting A at ambient CO2. Rubisco activation and photochemical activities were affected by moderate heat stress at lower temperatures in camelina than in the warm-adapted species cotton and tobacco. Growth under conditions that imposed a daily interval of moderate heat stress caused a 63?% reduction in camelina seed yield. Levels of cpn60 protein were elevated under the higher growth temperature, but acclimation of photosynthesis was minimal. Inactivation of Rubisco in camelina at temperatures above 35?°C was consistent with the temperature response of Rubisco activase activity and indicated that Rubisco activase was a prime target of inhibition by moderate heat stress in camelina. That photosynthesis exhibited no acclimation to moderate heat stress will likely impact the development of camelina and other cool season Brassicaceae as sources of bioenergy in a warmer world.  相似文献

An important goal in biotechnological research is to improve the yield of crop plants. Here, we genetically modified simultaneously source and sink capacities in potato (Solanum tuberosum cv. Desirée) plants to improve starch yield. Source capacity was increased by mesophyll‐specific overexpression of a pyrophosphatase or, alternatively, by antisense expression of the ADP‐glucose pyrophosphorylase in leaves. Both approaches make use of re‐routing photoassimilates to sink organs at the expense of leaf starch accumulation. Simultaneous increase in sink capacity was accomplished by overexpression of two plastidic metabolite translocators, that is, a glucose 6‐phosphate/phosphate translocator and an adenylate translocator in tubers. Employing such a ‘pull’ approach, we have previously shown that potato starch content and yield can be increased when sink strength is elevated. In the current biotechnological approach, we successfully enhanced source and sink capacities by a combination of ‘pull’ and ‘push’ approaches using two different attempts. A doubling in tuber starch yield was achieved. This successful approach might be transferable to other crop plants in the future.  相似文献

Viroid-free potato and chrysanthemum plants were obtained from meristem-tips cut from potato spindle tuber viroid-infected potato plants and from chrysanthemum plants infected with chrysanthemum stunt, chrysanthemum chlorotic mottle or cucumber palefruit viroids after 6 months therapy in a growth chamber at 5 °C and 16 hours daily light of 5.000 lx intensity. Chrysanthemum plants survived quite well the conditions of therapy while potato plants grown from stem cuttings survived these conditions much worse and potato plants grown from tubers did not survive these conditions. PSTV-free plants were obtained from meristem-tips cut from sprouts grown from potato tubers infected with severe (s-PSTV) or mild (m-PSTV) strains of potato spindle tuber viroid after 6 months therapy at 6–7 °C in the dark. The tubers survived these conditions quite well. The 3 months therapy period was found too short for any plant material. The efficiency of 6 months therapy in viroid elimination varied for different viroids and different plant material from 18.5 to 80.0 %.  相似文献

High CO2 and high temperature have an antagonistic interaction effect on rice yield potential and present a unique challenge to adapting rice to projected future climates. Understanding how the differences in response to these two abiotic variables are partitioned across rice germplasm accessions may be key to identifying potentially useful sources of resilient alleles for adapting rice to climate change. In this study, we evaluated eleven globally diverse rice accessions under controlled conditions at two carbon dioxide concentrations (400 and 600 ppm) and four temperature environments (29 °C day/21 °C night; 29 °C day/21 °C night with additional heat stress at anthesis; 34 °C day/26 °C night; and 34 °C day/26 °C night with additional heat stress at anthesis) for a suite of traits including five yield components, five growth characteristics, one phenological trait, and four photosynthesis‐related measurements. Multivariate analyses of mean trait data from these eight treatments divide our rice panel into two primary groups consistent with the genetic classification of INDICA/INDICA‐like and JAPONICA populations. Overall, we find that the productivity of plants grown under elevated [CO2] was more sensitive (negative response) to high temperature stress compared with that of plants grown under ambient [CO2] across this diversity panel. We report differential response to CO2 × temperature interaction for INDICA/INDICA‐like and JAPONICA rice accessions and find preliminary evidence for the beneficial introduction of exotic alleles into cultivated rice genomic background. Overall, these results support the idea of using wild or currently unadapted gene pools in rice to enhance breeding efforts to secure future climate change adaptation.  相似文献

Photosynthesis is inhibited by high temperatures that plants are likely to experience under natural conditions. Both increased thylakoid membrane ionic conductance and ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) deactivation have been suggested as the primary cause. The moderately heat‐tolerant crop Pima S‐6 cotton (Gossypium barbadense) was used to examine heat stress‐induced inhibition of photosynthesis. Previous field‐work indicated that moderate heat stress (T = 35–45 °C) is associated with very rapid leaf temperature changes. Therefore, a system was devised for rapidly heating intact, attached leaves to mimic natural field heat‐stress conditions and monitored Rubisco activation, carbon‐cycle metabolites, thylakoid ionic conductance, and photosystem I activity. As a proxy for NADPH and stromal redox status the activation state of NADP‐malate dehydrogenase (NADP‐MDH) was measured. In dark‐adapted cotton leaves, heating caused an increase in thylakoid permeability at temperatures as low as 36 °C. The increased permeability did not cause a decline in adenosine 5′‐triphosphate (ATP) levels during steady‐state or transient heating. Rapid heating caused a transient decline in ribulose 1,5‐bisphosphate without a decrease in Rubisco activation. Sustained heating caused a decline in Rubisco activation and also oxidized the stroma as judged by NADP‐MDH activation and this is hypothesized to result from increased cyclic photophosphorylation, explaining the maintenance of ATP content in the face of increased thylakoid membrane ion leakiness.  相似文献

We carried out a factorial experiment to explore the effect of doubled CO2 concentration and a 3 °C temperature increase on the development of a complete generation of the beetles Octotoma championi Baly and O. scabripennis Guérin‐Méneville (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). These species are biological control agents of Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae), with a leaf‐mining larval phase and free‐living, leaf‐chewing adults. Plants grown at elevated CO2 had enhanced above‐ground biomass, thicker leaves, reduced nitrogen concentration, and increased C:N ratios. Under the high temperature treatment, plants grown at ambient CO2 suffered wilting and premature leaf loss, despite daily watering; this effect was ameliorated at elevated CO2. The wilting of plants in the ambient CO2/high temperature treatment reduced the emergence success of the beetles, particularly O. championi. Development time was accelerated by approximately 10–13 days at the higher temperature, but was not affected by CO2. Neither CO2 nor temperature affected adult beetle weight. Consumption rates of free‐living beetles were not affected by either CO2 or temperature. By contrast, in the short‐term trials using excised foliage, beetles given no choice between ambient and elevated CO2‐grown foliage, consumed more from ambient plants. When beetles were offered a choice between foliage grown at the two CO2 levels, O. championi did not display a significant preference but O. scabripennis consumed more ambient CO2‐grown foliage when feeding at the lower temperature. This study indicates that under future conditions of higher temperatures, amelioration of water stress in host plants growing in elevated CO2 may benefit some endophagous insects by reducing premature leaf loss. Under some circumstances, this benefit may outweigh the deleterious effects of lower leaf nitrogen. Our results also indicate that foliage consumption under elevated CO2 by mobile, adult insects on whole plants may not be significantly increased, as was previously indicated by short‐term experiments using excised foliage.  相似文献

Abstract. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of water stress in sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas L. [Lam] 'Georgia Jet') on biomass production and plant-water relationships in an enriched CO2 atmosphere. Plants were grown in pots containing sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult) at two concentrations of elevated CO2 and two water regimes in open-top field chambers. During the first 12 d of water stress, leaf xylem potentials were higher in plants grown in a CO2 concentration of 438 and 666 μmol mol−1 than in plants grown at 364 μmol mol−1. The 364 μmol mol−1 CO2 grown plants had to be rewatered 2 d earlier than the high CO2-grown plants in response to water stress. For plants grown under water stress, the yield of storage roots and root: shoot ratio were greater at high CO2 than at 364 μmol mol−1; the increase, however, was not linear with increasing CO2 concentrations. In well-watered plants, biomass production and storage root yield increased at elevated CO2, and these were greater as compared to water-stressed plants grown at the same CO2 concentration.  相似文献

The CRISPR/Cas9 system has greatly improved our ability to engineer targeted mutations in eukaryotic genomes. While CRISPR/Cas9 appears to work universally, the efficiency of targeted mutagenesis and the adverse generation of off‐target mutations vary greatly between different organisms. In this study, we report that Arabidopsis plants subjected to heat stress at 37°C show much higher frequencies of CRISPR‐induced mutations compared to plants grown continuously at the standard temperature (22°C). Using quantitative assays relying on green fluorescent protein (GFP) reporter genes, we found that targeted mutagenesis by CRISPR/Cas9 in Arabidopsis is increased by approximately 5‐fold in somatic tissues and up to 100‐fold in the germline upon heat treatment. This effect of temperature on the mutation rate is not limited to Arabidopsis, as we observed a similar increase in targeted mutations by CRISPR/Cas9 in Citrus plants exposed to heat stress at 37°C. In vitro assays demonstrate that Cas9 from Streptococcus pyogenes (SpCas9) is more active in creating double‐stranded DNA breaks at 37°C than at 22°C, thus indicating a potential contributing mechanism for the in vivo effect of temperature on CRISPR/Cas9. This study reveals the importance of temperature in modulating SpCas9 activity in eukaryotes, and provides a simple method to increase on‐target mutagenesis in plants using CRISPR/Cas9.  相似文献

Cassava is an important dietary component for over 1 billion people, and its ability to yield under drought has led to it being promoted as an important crop for food security under climate change. Despite its known photosynthetic plasticity in response to temperature, little is known about how temperature affects plant toxicity or about interactions between temperature and drought, which is important because cassava tissues contain high levels of toxic cyanogenic glucosides, a major health and food safety concern. In a controlled glasshouse experiment, plants were grown at 2 daytime temperatures (23 °C and 34 °C), and either well‐watered or subject to a 1 month drought prior to harvest at 6 months. The objective was to determine the separate and interactive effects of temperature and drought on growth and toxicity. Both temperature and drought affected cassava physiology and chemistry. While temperature alone drove differences in plant height and above‐ground biomass, drought and temperature × drought interactions most affected tuber yield, as well as foliar and tuber chemistry, including C : N, nitrogen and cyanide potential (CNp; total cyanide released from cyanogenic glucosides). Conditions that most stimulated growth and yield (well‐watered × high temperature) effected a reduction in tuber toxicity, whereas drought inhibited growth and yield, and was associated with increased foliar and tuber toxicity. The magnitude of drought effects on tuber yield and toxicity were greater at high temperature; thus, increases in tuber CNp were not merely a consequence of reduced tuber biomass. Findings confirm that cassava is adaptable to forecast temperature increases, particularly in areas of adequate or increasing rainfall; however, in regions forecast for increased incidence of drought, the effects of drought on both food quality (tuber toxicity) and yield are a greater threat to future food security and indicate an increasing necessity for processing of cassava to reduce toxicity.  相似文献

Three-week old canola (Brassica napus L.) seedlings grown at 20/16°C (day/night) were subjected to short-term (4 and 8 h) heat stress (45°C) or maintained at a normal temperature of 20°C. Half of the plants under each treatment received a 10−6 M solution of brassinolide (BL) 1 h prior to beginning the temperature treatments. The concentration (ng/g dry weight) of endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) was subsequently determined in young leaves via the stable isotope dilution method. Applied BL had no effect on endogenous ABA for plants maintained at normal temperatures. However, ABA concentration was significantly elevated by heat stress alone and doubled by heat stress + BL. These results suggest that the well-known enhancement of tolerance to high temperature stress that can be obtained by BL or 24-epi-BL applications may be caused by a brassinosteroid-induced elevation in endogenous ABA concentration.  相似文献
