Timing and duration of the breeding cycle of the Cape petrel Daption capense were studied during two breeding seasons (1990/1991 and 1991/1992) at Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. In 1991/1992 the copulatory period extended over 53 days, with median date and a peak about 28 and 19 days respectively, before the median date of laying. Laying began 85 days after arrival, with mean (= median) date on 2 December (SD = 2.5 days). The distributions of laying, hatching and fledging dates showed a similar degree of synchrony and did not differ between years. Incubation and chick period were equally long (46 days), the former being less variable (coefficient of variation = 2.8% and 4.6%, respectively). Mean completed nesting cycle (92 days) was about 2 days shorter at Nelson Island than elsewhere and tended to shorten as the breeding season progressed. Its mean length represented 86% of the whole nesting period (107 days), which in turn represented 56% of the period of continuous colony attendance. The annual cycle of colony attendance of the Cape Petrel Daption capense at Nelson Island, Antarctica, covered about 9 months from the start of September until the end of May. Large numbers of birds attended the colony continuously for 6 months from arrival until fledging, except for a 2-week incomplete pre-laying exodus when attendance was reduced to 10% of that during incubation. After 1 month (March) of post-fledging absence, birds returned to the colony for 2 months in numbers comparable to the level in the breeding season. This was followed by a winter absence that lasted only 3 months and was interrupted by two short visits by a small number of birds. Mean attendance was highest during incubation, but short peaks of maximum attendance occurred during the pre-breeding period. Except for the incubation and brooding periods, colony attendance showed high variability both within and between days. Large numbers of visiting birds occurred on the sea and on islets in front of the colony until the end of October. Unemployed birds constituted an almost constant proportion of up to 50% of colony-attending birds during the incubation period. Diurnal variability did not show a consistent pattern but may represent preferential feeding during early morning hours, with additional short departures depending on the length of the daylight period. Colony counts were the most consistent during the second half of incubation, when the lowest counts gave an estimate of the number of breeding pairs and peak numbers an impression of the additional number of attending nonbreeders. Pre-breeding counts revealed the maximum numbers of birds associated with a particular colony. However, for both pre- and post-breeding surveys, several counts a day over a period of at least a week are recommended because of variability in attendance.  相似文献

Incubation and brooding performance of the Cape Petrel Daption capense at Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, in the 1991 -1992 austral summer is reported in detail and compared with data from two other areas. There was an inverse relationship between the mean foraging trip length and mean peak weight of chicks. Variation in shift length throughout incubation resulted from a combination of seasonal effects (food supply) and behavioural adjustment to hatching. The length of the last incubation shift was independent of its number but decreased with date of initiation. The average weight of nestattending birds increased steadily during the incubation period and at the same rate in both sexes. Females attained seasonal peak body-weight before the egg hatched, whereas males just recovered their pre-breeding weight. Males took on a slightly larger share of incubation (52%, range 40–63%) and invested more time in mutual nest attendance. Length of foraging trips varied consistently in pairs and individuals, its repeatability being twice as high in females as in males. The incubation performance of individual females (length of the first and an average foraging trip) was correlated with the size of the egg they had laid and also to subsequent chick growth and fledging success. There was a tendency in successful pairs to spend more time together at the nest and to have shorter foraging trips. I suggest that variation in breeding performance among pairs was mainly a result of individual variation in female quality, with pairs where the female contributed more to incubation being more successful. There is little evidence that egg losses were caused by parental errors.  相似文献

The diet of Cape petrel Daption capense was investigated at Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands (60°46S, 44°42W), Antarctica, in the period January–February 1996. Stomach contents of adults and regurgitate of chicks were sampled during the post-hatching period. The analysis showed that during the whole sampling period Antarctic krill and fish represented the predominant preys in terms of frequency of occurrence, forming nearly 35.8% and 64% by mass, respectively. The species Electrona antarctica was the most frequent fish prey. Amphipods were present in lower numbers and cephalopods were detected in the diet, but in a very small proportion. All of the fish identified in stomach contents and regurgitations of breeding and chick Cape petrels collected during January and February 1996 at Fildes Peninsula and Harmony Point, both in the South Shetland Islands and at Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands, were myctophids, a family never previously reported in the diet of breeding Cape petrels. Electrona antarctica was the most important fish prey, followed by Electrona carlsbergi at Fildes Peninsula, Krefftichthys anderssoni at Harmony Point and Gymnoscopelus braueri at Laurie Island. This study reports on the growth of Cape petrel chicks at Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, during the breeding seasons 1990/91 and 1991/92. Parameters of logistic growth model fitted to mass, wing, culmen and tarsus measurements were compared between available composite data sets. Differential growth rate of morphometric characters and their proportional development at hatching and fledging conform to the pattern observed in other fulmarine petrels, overall growth rate being among the fastest found in Procellariiformes. Composite growth curves varied significantly between populations, but few annual, seasonal, and intercolony differences were found within the Nelson Island population. As the differences between chicks from equally disturbed colonies were less marked than in comparison with the control colony, regular handling most probably reduced the growth in this study. Larger eggs produced heavier rather than structurally larger hatchlings, which attained higher peak and fledging mass and size. Strength of the relationship between egg-size and chick measurements initially declined with chick age but, in contrast with results of earlier studies, increased again after around the middle of the chick-rearing period. This suggests that pre-hatching maternal factors probably influenced initial and fledging (peak) size and mass of chicks via egg-size, while intermediate stages of growth were less affected. A difference in mass between chicks from small and large eggs was maintained until fledging and increased gradually until peak mass was reached.  相似文献

Stomach contents of 40 specimens of the blu0e-eyed shag Phalacrocorax atriceps bransfieldensis were sampled at Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands, in January 1994. The analysis of the diet showed that fish were by far the main component, followed by octopods, polychaetes and gammarids. Notothenia coriiceps predominated in frequency (58%) and in weight (65%), whereas Nototheniops nudifrons was the most important species by number (47%). The comparison with data published on pellet analysis of shags from the same colony gave similar results. However, although the methodology used in the present study requires more time in the field, it reduces the errors that arise from the examination of regurgitated casts, such as those due to erosion by digestion or loss of the otoliths through the gastrointestinal tract. The observation of 8 nests filmed continuously during 24 h showed that the members of the pairs alternate foraging and make 3–5 foraging trips per individual per day. The activity started as 0700 hours and finished at 2200 hours, and the mean duration of the trips was 73 min.  相似文献

Summary The species composition of the ichthyofauna of Admiralty Bay, King George Island was determined from results of sampling using bottom trawls, gill-nets and long-lines. Thirty-five species from 24 genera and 10 families (Table 1) were found. The number of species increased with depth (e.g. 7 species at 100 m, 14 species at 255 m and 21 species at 540 m), a tendency characteristic of Antarctic waters. In the bay, the catch rate obtained with a bottom trawl (greater than 30 kg/h) was roughly ten times lower than the catch rate using the same gear on the shelf around the Island. Notothenia gibberifrons was the dominant species in all trawls. The majority of these fish (about 95%) were immature juveniles (Table 4). Younger fish were found to inhabit shallower waters (Fig. 1). The majority of the fish of species Notothenia coriiceps neglecta, Notothenia rossii marmorata, Notothenia nudifrons, Trematomus newnesi and Trematomus bernacchii preferred waters about 255 m deep. Fourteen specimens of a previously undescribed species of the genus Psilodraco (currently being described by H. DeWitt) were caught in the bay within the 146 to 540 m depth range. The rare zoarcid, Lycenchelys aratrirostris, was also caught in Admirality Bay; previously this species had only been reported from the Elephant Island region. In the case of Trematomus newnesi, the occurrence of scales in the interorbital space was noted (Fig. 2), an observation which verifies this feature as a distinct taxonomical criterion for this species.  相似文献

Inter-annual variability in the diet of Chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) at Laurie Island (South Orkney Islands) and 25 de Mayo/King George and Nelson Islands (South Shetland) was examined based on stomach contents of adults during the 2002/2003–2006/2007 and 2002/2003–2004/2005 breeding seasons, respectively. Krill (Euphausia superba) dominated the diet as frequency of occurrence (in 100% of samples), number (>99%), and percentage contribution in weight (>94.8%). Other prey items were minor and varied between years. The weight of stomach contents was significantly different. The percentage in weight of whole krill was used to compare the feeding conditions across seasons. It differed significantly at the three sites studied. Distribution of krill size varied among years and localities, showing different krill availability for penguins.  相似文献

This work constitutes the first floristic and ecological analysis of the phytoplankton community of a volcanic freshwater lake in Deception Island (62°57′S, 60°38′W, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica). The main limnological features and phytoplankton size fractions were analyzed. Samples were taken during the austral summer of 2002 at two opposite sites. According to ANOVA results performed with abiotic variables, no significant differences between sites were found. The phytoplankton community showed low algal species richness, with an important contribution of the tychoplanktonic taxa. In terms of species number, Bacillariophyceae was the dominant class. Autotrophic picoplankton registered the highest densities from the second sampling date onwards. Nanophytoplankton was represented by unidentified chrysophycean organisms, which showed different distribution patterns between sites. The net phytoplankton abundance remained low during the sampling period and was strongly correlated with chlorophyll a concentration. Both nutrient concentrations and chlorophyll a values indicated oligotrophic conditions.  相似文献

Foraminiferal samples were taken from bottom sediments at Marian Cove, West Antarctica, in order to determine the depth zonation and foraminiferal species composition. Benthic foraminiferal communities are mainly composed of calcareous, agglutinated, and mixed associations. The Fisher-α diversity of the total assemblage groups is close to 6.0. The dominance/diversity patterns are characterized by low dominance and high diversity.Three zones are recognized at Marian Cove with depth boundaries at 22 and 65.5 m. Areas shallower than 22 m are nearly devoid of any toraminifera. Calcareous forms and/or calcareous forms mixed with agglutinated forms are relatively abundant between 22 and 65.5 m, while agglutinated forms dominate below 65.5 m.  相似文献

The hourglass dolphin Lagenorhynchus cruciger is the only regularly occurring small delphinid found south of the Antarctic Polar Front, yet little is known about its ecology and habitat use. This study uses 8 years (14 cruises) of standardized shipboard surveys during January–March (2003–2011) in southern Drake Passage near the South Shetland Islands to summarize the spatial distribution of hourglass dolphin sightings and quantify habitat use. Sighting data are linked to bathymetry (depth, slope) and distance to the average location of oceanographic features. A generalized linear model is used to examine the relationships between sightings and habitat features. Hourglass dolphins were sighted on 50% of surveys (n = 29); sightings were concentrated in February. Group size tended to be 2–6 individuals; there were only 2 sightings of larger groups, of 15 and 25 individuals. Sightings were distributed entirely within the deep pelagic waters north of the South Shetland Islands in southern Drake Passage and were closely associated with the southern boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Information on occurrence and distribution reported in this study may be useful for refining habitat associations for hourglass dolphins at regional scales in the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Labelled-water methodology was used to quantify energy costs and energy transfer efficiency in 18 mother-pup pairs of southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) during lactation. During the lactation period, mothers lost a mean mass of 227±47 kg. Mass loss included 22% of the protein, 60% of the fat, and 51% of the energy in the mothers body upon arrival. Total body-energy reserves at parturition explained 69% of the variation in the total lactation costs and 50% of the variation in the pups body energy at weaning. On average, pups retained 48% of the mass, 49% of protein, 53% of fat and 51% of energy lost by their mothers. Greater, fatter females showed a decrease in the efficiency of energy and fat transfer and, at the same time, an increase in the efficiency of protein transfer. This may be due to an increased use of protein as metabolic fuel, as fat demands for milk production increase. There was no evidence that greater total lactation costs influence the ability of mothers to produce a pup in the next breeding season.  相似文献

This paper describes the reproduction and life history of an intertidal species, Porphyra endiviifolium, from Antarctica. Field specimens were examined microscopically, prepared for electron microscopy and used to establish cultures. Wild populations comprised two kinds of leafy thalli, morphologically similar but distinguished by their mode of reproduction, either sexual or asexual. Carpospores from monoecious leafy gametophytes developed into conchocelis filaments in culture, and under “winter-spring” conditions these formed conchospores that germinated to produce leafy thalli. Monospores from asexual leafy thalli developed directly into two different forms of leafy thalli. Only one of the cultured morphotypes became fertile, reproducing asexually by monospores. We conclude that the phases of the life history of P. endiviifolium show different ecological strategies, the conchocelis phase reproducing in response to short days unlike the leafy thalli in which growth and reproduction respond primarily to irradiance. The community structure and physiological characteristics of three microbial mat communities in Byers Peninsula (Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) were compared. One of the mats was located at the edge of a stream and was dominated by diatoms (with a thin basal layer of oscillatorian cyanobacteria), whereas the other two mats, located over moist soil and the bottom of a pond, respectively, were dominated by cyanobacteria throughout their vertical profiles. The predominant xanthophyll was fucoxanthin in the stream mat and myxoxanthophyll in the cyanobacteria-dominated mats. The sheath pigment scytonemin was absent in the stream mat but present in the soil and pond mats. The stream mat showed significantly lower delta13C and higher delta15N values than the other two mats. Consistent with the delta15N values, N2 fixation was negligible in the stream mat. The soil mat was the physiologically most active community. It showed rates of photosynthesis three times higher than in the other mats, and had the highest rates of ammonium uptake, nitrate uptake and N2 fixation. These observations underscore the taxonomic and physiological diversity of microbial mat communities in the maritime Antarctic region.  相似文献

An investigation of ponds, puddles and slow-flowing waters situated in the area of the Polish Antarctic Station distinguished two groups of diatom communities. The first group characterized waters poor in nutrients and brackish. The number of taxa, abundance of species and diatom biomass index were all low. Nitzschia homburgiensis, Achnanthes laevis var. quadratarea and A. delicatula prevailed. The second group characterized water richer in nutrients and brackish. The number of species was also low, but the diatom biomass index was higher. Nitzschia gracilis, Navicula gregaria and Navicula wiesneri formed large populations. The diet of the kelp gull (Larus dominicanus), its foraging behaviour and the consumption rates on the Antarctic limpet (Nacella concinna) were studied during austral spring and summer 1992/1993 and 1993/1994 at Potter Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica. Prey information was obtained by collecting 237 pellets, foraging behaviour was observed by focal and instantaneous scan samplings, and consumption rate was estimated by means of weekly sampling of limpets found in 5 nests and their respective middens. Limpets were the most important prey followed by scavenged prey (penguin and seal carcasses), amphipods, snails, fish and euphausiids. Foraging gulls spent 51% of the time searching for limpets, 10% moving between foraging areas, 9% in catching effort and 15% handling prey. The number of gulls observed searching for limpets was inversely correlated with the tidal height. In the diet limpets provide 102.3, 159.4 and 188.1 kJ gull−1 day−1 during incubation, hatching and brooding respectively; these values range between 15 and 27%, with a maximum of 40%, of the basic daily energy requirements of kelp gulls. Total consumption rate estimations for the whole population of gulls at Potter Peninsula reached between 3400 and 4800 limpets day−1, which represents approximately 10–14% of the total annual limpet mortality.
