Experiments are presented in which the effect of saccadic eye movements on the visibility of sinusoidal gratings drifting with velocities between 2 deg/s and 400 deg/s is investigated. The results demonstrate that saccades are highly useful for detecting this class of stimuli. Due to a saccade, otherwise subthreshold stimuli become visible as short, distinct flashes of the seemingly statinoary pattern. The paper analyzes in detail the dependence of the amount of facilitation on saccade size and relative direction and isolates the additional effect of saccadic suppression. A simple model is proposed which predicts the experimental findings.  相似文献

We studied the effects of saccadic eye movements on visual signaling in the primate lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), the earliest stage of central visual processing. Visual responses were probed with spatially uniform flickering stimuli, so that retinal processing was uninfluenced by eye movements. Nonetheless, saccades had diverse effects, altering not only response strength but also the temporal and chromatic properties of the receptive field. Of these changes, the most prominent was a biphasic modulation of response strength, weak suppression followed by strong enhancement. Saccadic modulation was widespread, and affected both of the major processing streams in the LGN. Our results demonstrate that during natural viewing, thalamic response properties can vary dramatically, even over the course of a single fixation.  相似文献

We adopted the estimate of the intraclass coefficient of reliability, R, to evaluate the reliability of saccadic eye movements quantitative analysis. At a one-week interval we recorded refixative saccadic eye movements twice from fifteen healthy subjects by means of the binocular electrooculographic technique. R was computed for the constants and the slopes of the amplitude/duration and the amplitude/peak velocity relationships, for the mean precision values and for the mean latency values adjusted for subject's age. Our data demonstrated that the reliability of saccade parameters is fairly good for the amplitude/peak velocity relationship, good for the precision and very good for the amplitude/duration relationship. Finally, we believe that the normal variability values we obtained can be usefully employed in neurophysiological longitudinal studies not only in normal subjects, but also in pathological condition provided the more reliable parameters and the more adequate strategies to compute normal variability values are chosen.  相似文献

The saccadic eye movement related potentials (SEMRPs) enable to study brain mechanisms of the sensorimotor integration. SEMRPs provide insight into various cognitive mechanisms related to planning, programming, generation and execution of the saccadic eye movements. SEMRPs can be used to investigate pathophysiological mechanisms of several disorders of the central nervous system. Here we shortly summarize basic findings concerning the significance of SEMRP components, their relationship to the functional brain asymmetry and visual attention level as well as changes related to certain neuropsychological disorders.  相似文献

Visual information processing is adapted to the statistics of natural visual stimuli, and these statistics depend to a large extent on the movements of an animal itself. To investigate such movements in freely walking blowflies, we measured the orientation and position of their head and thorax, with high spatial and temporal accuracy. Experiments were performed on Calliphora vicina, Lucilia cuprina and L. caesar. We found that thorax and head orientation of walking flies is typically different from the direction of walking, with differences of 45° common. During walking, the head and the thorax turn abruptly, with a frequency of 5–10 Hz and angular velocities in the order of 1,000°/s. These saccades are stereotyped: head and thorax start simultaneously, with the head turning faster, and finishing its turn before the thorax. The changes in position during walking are saccade-like as well, occurring synchronously, but on average slightly after the orientation saccades. Between orientation saccades the angular velocities are low and the head is held more stable than the thorax. We argue that the strategy of turning by saccades improves the performance of the visual system of blowflies.  相似文献

Simulation of the saccadic eye movement mechanism and, more recently, diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders associated with saccades rely on accurate recording and analysis of saccade characteristics. Traditionally, eye movements are monitored objectively by registering a transduced voltage correlate of eye position on a pen or cathode ray oscillograph. Analysis of the record obtained is tedious and often inaccurate. The advent of small digital computers with analog-to-digital capability permits more efficient recording. However, computer programs reviewed are limited to the analysis of specific saccade parameters or partly depend on manual operations. The computer program described stores the entire saccadic event of each eye between pre-defined limits including the pre- and post-saccade intervals. Preliminary operations including artifact identification, location of onset, elimination of RC decay, DC offset and amplitude scaling prepare the data for display and subsequent analysis. The program also includes a subroutine to derive the mean and standard deviation of successive saccades.  相似文献

Saccade and smooth pursuit are the eye movements used by primates to shift gaze. In this article we review evidence for the effects of reinforcement on several dimensions of these responses such as their latencies, velocities or amplitudes. We propose that these responses are operant behaviours controlled by their consequences on performance of visually guided tasks. Studying the conditions under which particular eye movement patterns might emerge from the cumulative effects of reinforcement provides critical insights about how motor responses are attuned to environmental exigencies.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Horizontal head movements of the praying mantis, Sphodromantis lineola Burm., were recorded continuously. They responded to the presence of a live blowfly prey in the antero-lateral visual field with a rapid saccadic head movement. The angular movement of a fixation saccade was correlated positively to the displacement of the prey from the prothoracic midline. Saccade magnitude and velocity are related. After the stimulus moved out of the visual field, the mantis made a second saccadic head movement, a return saccade towards the body midline. We observed return saccades in which the head overshot or undershot the body midline, as well as saccades which returned the head exactly to its initial position. In 92% of trials with intact mantids, the return movement succeeded eventually in rotating the head back to its initial position, whereas after removal of the neck hair plates this occurred in only 47% of trials. There is a consistent relation between saccade extent and velocity. Velocities of return saccades were slower than those of fixation saccades. It is suggested that sensory inputs from the neck hair plate proprioceptors modify both the magnitude and the angular velocity of fixation and return saccadic head movements.  相似文献

Involuntary eye movements were recorded during threshold detection tasks under various experimental conditions. The data were analyzed for interdependencies between stimulus parameters, detection performance, and oculomotor behaviour. The data demonstrate that under certain conditions, saccadic parameters are adaptive to specific stimulus properties. Further, the data suggest that for stationary patterns with low spatial frequencies and for gratings flickering with high temporal frequencies, detection is facilitated considerably by the occurrence of a saccadic eye movement. These facilitation effects are consistent with the predictions of a theoretical model presented in a previous paper.  相似文献

During steady fixation, observers make small fixational saccades at a rate of around 1–2 per second. Presentation of a visual stimulus triggers a biphasic modulation in fixational saccade rate—an initial inhibition followed by a period of elevated rate and a subsequent return to baseline. Here we show that, during passive viewing, this rate signature is highly sensitive to small changes in stimulus contrast. By training a linear support vector machine to classify trials in which a stimulus is either present or absent, we directly compared the contrast sensitivity of fixational eye movements with individuals'' psychophysical judgements. Classification accuracy closely matched psychophysical performance, and predicted individuals'' threshold estimates with less bias and overall error than those obtained using specific features of the signature. Performance of the classifier was robust to changes in the training set (novel subjects and/or contrasts) and good prediction accuracy was obtained with a practicable number of trials. Our results indicate a tight coupling between the sensitivity of visual perceptual judgements and fixational eye control mechanisms. This raises the possibility that fixational saccades could provide a novel and objective means of estimating visual contrast sensitivity without the need for observers to make any explicit judgement.  相似文献

We use saccades several times per second to move the fovea between points of interest and build an understanding of our visual environment. Recent behavioral experiments show evidence for the integration of pre- and postsaccadic information (even subliminally), the modulation of visual sensitivity, and the rapid reallocation of attention. The recent physiological literature has identified a characteristic modulation of neural responsiveness-perisaccadic reduction followed by a postsaccadic increase-that is found in many visual areas, but whose source is as yet unknown. This modulation seems optimal for reducing sensitivity during and boosting sensitivity between saccades, but no study has yet established a direct causal link between neural and behavioral changes.  相似文献

Latency of visually evoked saccadic eye movements   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The validness of a model describing the relation between mean saccadic latency and stimulus asynchrony based on facilitation instead of suppression was tested experimentally. As a result, suppression of signals generated by the onset of a peripheral stimulus due to fixation of another target, giving rise to an increase of mean saccadic latency, does not seem very likely. The influence of the intensity of the fixation target on the latency of visually evoked saccades was studied. According to the facilitation model, the offset of the fixation target induces after an afferent delay, a transition of the state of the facilitation mechanism from the unfacilitated condition into a mode of maximal facilitation. The time-period during which this change is accomplished is called Facilitation-Rise-Time (FRT). An interpretation within the context of the facilitation model of gap-overlap latency data for different values of the intensity of the fixation stimulus suggests, in combination with computer-computations of the model, that lowering of this intensity causes an increase in FRT. The results in normal subjects of step stimulus experiments with a dim fixation point substantiate the hypothesis of a facilitation mechanism, which is triggerable not only by an external signal such as the offset of the fixation point, but also by some internal stimulus independent signal. Moreover, data for tracking by an amblyopic eye seem to support this conclusion. The findings of increased saccadic latencies in amblyopic and Optic Neuritis (ON) eyes suggest a slowing of processing of visual information in the sensory pathways from the central retina, subsequently utilized by the oculomotor system in the generation of saccades.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
