The island of Gran Canaria was inhabited in pre-Hispanic times by people of North African origin who arrived on the island towards the second half of the first millennium BC. In previous studies, we reported that there are some differences between the coastal inhabitants from Gran Canaria, mainly buried in tumuli, and those from the central mountains, mainly buried in caves. For example, the prevalence of auricular exostoses is higher among the population interred in coastal tumuli when compared with the inland population. This finding may be explained by the practice of marine activities, as supported by chroniclers' reports, by archaeological data, and by bone trace-element analysis, which point to a more intense consumption of marine products by the inhabitants of the coastal regions. Dental caries epidemiology is one of the most important ways in which the diet of past populations can be reconstructed. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence and intensity of caries among the pre-Hispanic population of Gran Canaria, in order to increase our knowledge about the dietary habits of these people, and to search for differences among the population buried in caves and that buried in tumuli. We studied a total of 791 individuals. Sex was estimated in 561 cases, and age at death, following Brothwell's criteria, in 549. We found that 66.95% of individuals buried in caves and 58.91% of those buried in tumuli showed at least one carious lesion. The proportion of carious teeth was significantly higher among the population buried in caves (median = 15.71%, interquartile range (IR) = 0-33.33%) than among the population buried in tumuli (median = 6.25%, IR = 0-20%, P = 0.001). Type of burial is the main factor associated with the proportion of carious teeth.These data suggest that the population buried in caves had a different dietary pattern from that of those buried in tumuli.  相似文献

We investigated the incidence of the Region V mitochondrial DNA 9-base-pair (bp) deletion from human remains recovered from several archaeological sites and contexts throughout Argentina. Of the 34 samples analyzed, 24 yielded DNA extractions that gave clear amplification results. All of the individuals carried two repeats of the 9 bp, one of which has been shown to be deleted in some individuals of Asian origin and defines mitochondrial lineage B. Although most of the modern Amerindian groups in the region exhibit the deletion in high frequencies, the absence of the 9-bp deletion among ancient populations of South America seems to be the rule rather than the exception, as was reported by several studies involving extinct populations. The evidence gathered until now suggests that the earliest settlers of this region of South America did not carry mitochondrial lineage B.  相似文献

In this study we analyzed the relationships and patterns of spatial variation from morphological cranial variability of 17 population samples representing the ancient inhabitants of the central territory of Argentina (archaeologically known as "Sierras Centrales") and other pre-Hispanic populations from different ecological and geographic regions of the Southern Cone of South America (Argentina and Uruguay), based on the analysis of 10 craniofacial measurements. Results obtained from D2 distances can be interpreted as evidence of a similar biological history for the populations that inhabited the Sierras Centrales and the population of Santiago del Estero. Matrix correlation analysis demonstrated that craniometric variation is significantly influenced by geography, suggesting that populations that lived at lower geographical distance share more biological similarity. Global spatial autocorrelation analysis suggests a clinal pattern for the biological variation, although Moran's I estimates calculated for each variable demonstrate that only nasal height and breadth show this spatial pattern of variation. Results from spatial regression techniques show a significant effect of altitude modeling nasal shape, in agreement with previous studies suggesting that nasal morphology is strongly influenced by environment variables.  相似文献

A recently published finite element (FE) head model is modified to consider the viscoelasticity of the meninges, the spongy and compact bone in the skull. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is simulated explicitly as a hydrostatic fluid by using a surface-based fluid modelling method, which allows fluid and structure interaction. It is found that the modified model yields smoother pressure responses in a head impact simulation. The baseline model underestimated the peak von Mises stress in the brain by 15% and the peak principal stress in the skull by 33%. The increase in the maximum principal stress in the skull is mainly caused by the updation of the material's viscoelasticity, and the change in the maximum von Mises stress in the brain is mainly caused by the improvement of the CSF simulation. The study shows that the viscoelasticity of the head tissue should be considered, and that the CSF should be modelled as a fluid, when using FE analysis to study head injury due to impact.  相似文献

Eye movements were produced in an elasmobranch preparation by electrical stimulation of the horizontal canal ampullary nerves. A pseudorandom binary sequence of stimulus pulse trains was delivered bilaterally. Eye position during this stimulus was cross-correlated with the stimulus pattern to obtain a linear model of the response. Sums of exponential functions were fitted to the crosscorrelogram data to estimate time-constants and transfer functions. The data was examined in the frequency domain by using Fourier transformation.The response is accurately described by a second order linear filter, which is essentially a low pass filter with a cutoff at 0.22 Hz. This nearly two octaves below the cutoff frequency of the eye motor plant, which has been estimated by the same method. Our data shows that there is no central phase compensation or prediction which might offset the substantial delay in eye motor plant response. We hypothesise that the necessary phase compensation may be achieved by driving the vestibulo-ocular reflex with sensory neurons having a phase advance at high frequency.  相似文献

We investigate the dynamics of head lice infections in schools, by consideringa model for endemic infection based on a stochastic SIS (susceptible-infected-susceptible) epidemic model, with the addition of an external source of infection. We deduce a range of properties of our model, including the length of a single outbreak of infection. We use the stationary distribution of the number of infected individuals, in conjunction with data from a recent study carried out in Welsh schools on the prevalence of head lice infections, and employ maximum likelihood methods to obtain estimates of the model parameters. A complication is that, for each school, only a sample of the pupils was checked for infection. Our likelihood function takes account of the missing data by incorporating a hypergeometric sampling element. We arrive at estimates of the ratios of the “within school” and “external source” transmission rates to the recovery rate and use these to obtain estimates for various quantities of interest.   相似文献

Abstract. Studies of the changes of the head inhibitor and the head activator during hydra head regeneration have shown that free head inhibitor blocks its own release from sources and that of head activator as well. On the basis of this feedback mechanism a system of differential equations was formulated which describes the changes of the free and bound substances during regeneration in a computer simulation. Removal of the head is assumed to cause a loss of free inhibitor by leakage. The resulting decrease in the concentration of free inhibitor allows extensive release of both substances from sources close to the cut surface. The fast diffusing inhibitor spreads out over the whole tissue. Due to its smaller diffusion rate the activator accumulates near the cut surface. This distribution is stable during the first hours of regeneration, and we propose that it is the necessary prerequisite for head formation. Using the stimulating property of the head activator on the production of nerve cells, which are in turn activator- and inhibitor-producing cells, restoration of the gradient of the sources in the model is assured. Budding, which is another important morphogenetic event of hydra, can also be described in terms of the model.  相似文献

A gynandromorph fate map of the head of D. melanogaster was produced using 28 landmarks derived from one imaginal disc. An examination of the meaning of fine-structure mapping discloses that the sturt value observed between one pair of landmarks within a disc may approximate the relative physical distance of their progenitor cells at blastoderm, but for another pair of landmarks (assuming no directed cell movements), the sturt value may simply reflect their close geographic location at the time the cells are specified for their particular differentiation, a time much later in development when most cell division within the disc has come to an end. The formation of early developmental compartments has little effect on fate-map distances. Our analysis of the data suggests there are approximately ten cells present at the blastoderm stage that are head progenitors. Each blastoderm cell is likely to be the progenitor of a particular array of landmarks, but there is overlap between arrays from different blastoderm cells.  相似文献

A three-dimensional finite element model of the human head is presented. The model has been validated against two sets of experimental results. To assess injury likelihood of the head subjected to impact loading, the structural intensity (SI) methodology is introduced in accordance with the prevailing practice in experimental biomechanics. SI is a vector quantity indicating the direction and magnitude of power flow inside a dynamically loaded structure. In this paper, the SI field inside the head model is computed for three cases, namely frontal, rear and side impacts. The results for the three cases have revealed that there exist power flow paths. The skull is, in general, a good energy flow channel. The study has also revealed the high possibility of spinal cord injury due to wave motion inside the head.  相似文献

Numerous techniques have been employed to monitor humeral head translation due to its involvement with several shoulder pathologies. However, most of the techniques were not validated. The objective of this study is to compare the accuracy of manual digitization and contour registration in measuring superior translation of the humeral head. Eight pairs of cadaver scapulae and humerii bones were harvested for this study. Each scapula and humerus was secured in a customized jig that allowed for control of humeral head translations and a vise that permitted rotations of the scapula about three axes. Fluoroscopy was used to take images of the shoulder bones. Scapular orientation was manipulated in different positions while the humerus was at 90° of humeral elevation in the scapular plane. Humeral head translation was measured using the two methods and was compared to the known translation. Additionally, accuracy of the contour registration method to measure 2-D scapular rotations was assessed. The range for the root mean square (RMS) error for manual digitization method was 0.27 mm - 0.43 mm and the contour registration method had a RMS error ranging from 0.18 mm - 0.40 mm. In addition, the RMS error for the scapular angle rotation using the contour registration method was 2.4°. Both methods showed acceptable errors. However, on average, the contour registration method showed lesser measurement error compared to the manual digitization method. In addition, the contour registration method was able to show good accuracy in measuring rotation that is useful in 2-D image analysis.  相似文献
