The inner ear of Ichthyophis glutinosus is described with emphasis on the position of the sensory organs and the polarization of the hair cells. The hair cell polarization patterns of the maculae, cristae and papilla basilaris is similar to previous observations in other tetrapods. The papilla amphibiorum shows a simpler bidirectional polarization than described in other amphibians. The papilla neglecta, a sensory organ in the utriculus shows a unidirectional posteriorly directed polarization. A neglecta has not been found in the utriculus of anurans and urodeles previously.  相似文献

The budgerigar is a representative of the parrot-like birds that, like song birds, have developed complex communication signals. This species is interesting in a psychoacoustic sense, in that it shows unusually good frequency discriminative abilities above about 1 kHz. To begin to understand whether the peripheral hearing organ plays a role in such specializations, we have carried out a quantitative study of the fine anatomy of the basilar papilla and compared it to data from other avian species. The budgerigar basilar papilla is about 2.5 mm long in the living animal and contains about 5,400 hair cells. The hair cells of the papilla show regional specializations similar to those found in other birds and are described from scanning electron microscopic and light microscopic studies. Regiona changes in the basilar papilla, and in the basilar and tectorial membranes are described from light microscopic data. As noted for other avian species, the constellation of morphologic features found in the budgerigar is unique. In general, the hair cell patterns of the budgerigar papilla showed fewer specializations than found in, e.g., a songbird, the starling, but more than seen in a primitive land bird, e.g., the pigeon. There were no features that were obviously related to the unusal psychoacoustic performance of this species. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Summary The sensory hair cells of the ventral 2/3 of the papilla basilaris of Gekko gecko are divided into anterior (pre-axial) and posterior (post-axial) portions by a mid-axial gap or hiatus where there are no hair cells. There is no separation of the hair cells in the dorsal third of the papilla. There are three tectorial membrane modifications: an attached thickened membrane covering the pre-axial hair cells, sallets covering the post-axial hair cells, and an attached filamentous membrane covering the dorsal hair cells. The number of hair cells is greatest ventrally and decreases dorsally. There are approximately 2000 to 2100 hair cells. The kinocilia of the hair cells of the anterior halves of both the pre- and the post-axial vertical hair-cell rows are oriented posteriorly, while the kinocilia of the posterior halves are oriented anteriorly. The kinocilia of the hair cells of the dorsal third of the papilla are mostly oriented posteriorly. Thus, kinocilial orientation of the ventral 2/3 of the papilla is doubly bidirectional, and the dorsal 1/3, largely unidirectional.I would like to thank Ms. Maria Maglio for her skill in handling the technical aspects of the scanning electron microscopy as well as her artistry in achieving photographic excellence on the scope, David Akers for expert photographic assistance, and Wayne Emery for the drawings. 1. The diets of pochard (Aythya ferina), scaup (A. marila) and goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) overwintering on Lough Neagh are dominated by chironomid larvae, while molluscs are more important in that of tufted duck (A. fuligula). 2. Inshore areas of Lough Neagh offer poor feeding conditions for these diving ducks because chironomid larvae and molluscs are of small individual body size or low abundance. These factors lead to all four ducks foraging at least in part at depths greater than those usually exploited. 3. Due to their common consumption of molluscs, the diet of tufted duck shows a higher overlap with that of an introduced roach (Rutilus rutilus) population than with any other duck or fish species. 4. The feeding ecology of tufted duck and roach in Lough Neagh may form an example of distant competition and be at least partly responsible for recent fluctuations in the numbers of tufted duck.  相似文献

The overwintering population of tufted duck (Aythya fuligula) on Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland, has varied over the last three decades, with numbers declining in the early 1980s but then increasing to former levels in the late 1980s. Population fluctuations of recently introduced roach (Rutilus rutilus) mirrored these trends. The present study explores the possibility that competition for benthic food resources is responsible for these changes by examining the diets of tufted duck, roach and other major fish species of the lake. Diet overlaps were generally high due to the common consumption of chironomid larvae. The diet of tufted duck overlapped most with that of roach because these two species were the only significant consumers of molluscs. This evidence provides further support for a tufted duck — roach competition hypothesis.  相似文献

Four new species of Eviota (Teleostei: Gobiidae) are described from French Polynesia. Eviota hinanoae occurs from the Gambier, Austral and Society Archipelagos and differs from its closest relatives primarily in sensory pore pattern, having cuplike male urogenital papilla, and in lacking prominent dark pigmentation on the base of the pectoral fin. Three other new species, E. dorsimaculata, E. lacrimosa and E. deminuta, are known only from the Marquesas Islands and are distinguished from congeners by differences in pigmentation, sensory pore pattern, urogenital papilla shape, the number of rays in the dorsal and anal fins, and the length of the fifth pelvic-fin ray. Eviota deminuta represents one of the smallest known species of Eviota and features reductions in several morphological characters, including the loss of all head pores. Three of the new species are included in a phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase-I, along with 21 additional species of Eviota.  相似文献

Number of breeding attempts is a strong correlate of lifetime reproductive success (LRS) in birds, but the relative importance of potentially interacting factors affecting LRS has rarely been fully evaluated. We considered simultaneously five main factors hypothesized to influence LRS (age at first breeding, nesting date, number of breeding attempts, female traits, brood parasitism) by analyzing with path analysis 22-year data sets for 1,279 individually marked females and their offspring in tufted duck (Aythya fuligula), common pochard (A. ferina) and northern shoveler (Anas clypeata). We recaptured marked offspring as breeding adults (n=496 females) and obtained more complete estimates of LRS by incorporating information about banded ducklings of both sexes shot by hunters 12 months after banding (n=138). In tufted ducks and especially pochard (both diving duck species), late-hatched females tended to delay nesting until 2-years old. Most females (tufted duck, 74%; pochard, 71%; shoveler, 59%) apparently produced no breeding-age offspring. Number of breeding attempts (i.e., longevity) was the strongest correlate of LRS in all species, after controlling effects of age at first breeding, relative nest initiation date, wing length and body mass. Percentage of females producing recruits increased gradually with number of breeding attempts for all three species. Also, as expected, females nesting early in the breeding season had higher LRS than late-nesting individuals. In shoveler, female-specific characteristics of relatively longer wings and heavier late incubation body mass had positive effects on LRS, the latter feature being more common in 2-year-old nesters. In diving ducks, no relationships were detected between LRS and female-specific traits like wing length or body mass, and nor did acceptance of parasitic eggs have any deleterious impact on fitness estimates. Overall, number of fledged ducklings and LRS were related in tufted duck, weakly associated in pochard and unrelated in shoveler, implying that fledging success is not always a reliable measure of LRS.  相似文献

With the help of light and scanning microscopy the receptive apparatus of two acoustic papillas (papilla basilaris and p. amphibiorum) of brown frog has been compared. It has been shown that the hair cells of p. amphibiorum are more numerous and some of them differ from those of p. basilaris by the character of arrangement, number of stereocilia and surrounding them supporting cells--by their greater size and density of microvilli.  相似文献

Summary In modern frogs, the amphibian papilla exhibits a caudal extension whose shape, relative length, and proportion of hair cells vary markedly from species to species. Tuning in the caudal extension is organized tonotopically and evidently involves the tectorium. In terms of the proportion of amphibian-papillar hair cells in the caudal extension, we report more diversity among 8 species of a single genus (Eleutherodactylus) on a single island (Puerto Rico) than has been found so far among all of the (more than 50) other modern anurans examined for this feature from around the world. These 8 Puerto Rican species have overlapping habitat and conspicuous diversity in the male advertisement call. For 7 of the 8 species, we report that the call has transient spectral components in the frequency range of the amphibian papilla, and that the proportion of caudal extension hair cells and the frequency distribution of those components are correlated. Thus one might conclude that the selective pressures that led to diversity of calls among the 8 species also led to diversity in form of the amphibian papilla.Abbreviations AP amphibian papilla - BEF best excitatory frequency - PR Puerto Rican - SEM scanning electron microscope - SVL snout-vent length - TC tectorial corner - TM tectorial membrane  相似文献

Summary We have labelled single physiologically-characterized primary auditory neurones in the bobtail lizard and traced them to their innervation sites within the basilar papilla. The distribution of stained fibre terminals shows that low frequencies (up to a characteristic frequency, CF, of about 0.8 kHz) are processed in the smaller apical segment of the papilla and medium to high frequencies in the much longer basal segment. It is possible that the frequency ranges of these segments partly overlap in individual animals. The tonotopic organization of the basal segment is well described by an exponential relationship; the CF increases towards the basal end. Systematic, peripheral recordings from the auditory nerve very close to the papilla confirm this tonotopicity for the basal segment. The apical segment of the papilla shows an unusual tonotopic organization in that the CF appears to increase across the epithelium, from abneural to neural. A tonotopicity in this direction has not previously been demonstrated in vertebrates. All stained neurones branched within the basilar papilla to innervate, typically, between 4 and 14 hair cells. The branching patterns of fibres innervating in the apical and basal papillar segment, respectively, show characteristic differences. Apical fibres tend to innervate hair cells with the same morphological polarity and often branch extensively along the segment. Basal fibres, in contrast, typically innervate about equal numbers of hair cells of opposing polarity and are more restricted in their longitudinal branching.Abbreviation CF characteristic frequency  相似文献

Summary Helicotylenchus scoticus n. sp. is described. It was found at an altitude of 660 m on the north-west slope of Sgurr Cos na Breachd-laoidh, Scotland, in a rough grassland consisting predominantly of tufted hair grass (Deschampsia caespitosa). This species is characterized by a relatively long spear and an oesophagus which superficially appears to abut on to the intestine with virtually no overlap. The number of nominal species in the genus Helicotylenchus has increased considerably over recent years and stands now at 154 species. The task of identifying species in this genus using dichotomous keys has become increasingly more difficult. As a practical alternative a compendium is given which uses nine of the most diagnostic characters.  相似文献

Synopsis Following the introduction of roach, Rutilus rutilus, to a large eutrophic lake in ca. 1973, a subsequent increase in the abundance of this cyprinid through the 1970s was accompanied by a decline in the numbers of one of the lake&s most abundant overwintering waterfowl, the tufted duck, Aythya fuligula, and an increase in overwintering piscivorous great crested grebes, Podiceps cristatus. We suggest that these contrasting trends are causally related and that competition for benthos and increased prey availability are the mechanisms responsible for the changes in the tufted duck and grebe populations respectively. In agreement with these hypotheses, a reduction in the roach population during the mid 1980s was accompanied by a recovery of tufted ducks and a decline of grebes.  相似文献

The papillae basilares of 12 species of lizards from seven different families were studied by SEM. The iguanids, Sceloporus magister and S. occidentalis, have typical “iguanid type” papillae with central short-ciliated unidirectional hair cell segments and apical and basal long-ciliated bidirectional hair cell segments. These species of Sceloporus are unique among iguanids in that the bidirectional segments consist of but two rows of hair cells. The agamids, Agama agama and Calotes nigrolabius, have an “agamid-anguid type” papilla consisting of an apical short-ciliated unidirectional hair cell segment and a longer basal bidirectional segment. Agama agama is unusual in having a few long-ciliated hair cells at the apical end of the apical short-ciliated segment. The agamid, Uromastix sp., has an “iguanid type” papilla with a central short-ciliated unidirectional segment and apical and basal bidirectional segments. The anguid, Ophisaurus ventralis, has an “iguanid” papillar pattern with the short-ciliated segment centrally located. All the short-ciliated hair cells of the above species are covered by a limbus-attached tectorial network or cap and the long-ciliated hair cells, only by loose tectorial strands. The lacertids, Lacerta viridis and L. galloti, have papillae divided into two separate segments. The shorter apical segment consists of opposingly oriented, widely separated short-ciliated cells covered by a heavy tectorial membrane. The apical portion of the longer basal segment consists of unidirectionally oriented hair cells, while the greater part of the segment has opposingly oriented hair cells. The xantusiids, Xantusia vigilis and X. henshawi, have papillae made up of separate small apical segments and elongated basal segments. The apical hair cells are largely, but not exclusively, unidirectional and are covered by a heavy tectorial cap. The basal strip is bidirectional and the hair cells are covered by sallets. The kinocilial heads are arrowhead-shaped. The papilla of the cordylid, Cordylus jonesii, is very similar to that of Xantusia except that the apical segment is not completely separated from the basal strip. The papilla of the Varanus bengalensis is divided into a shorter apical and a longer basal segment. The hair cells of the entire apical and the basal three quarters of the basal segment are opposingly oriented, not with reference to the midpapillary axis but randomly to either the neural or abneural direction. The apical quarter of the basal segment contains unidirectional, abneurally oriented hair cells. The entire papilla is covered by a dense tectorial membrane. The functional correlations of the above structural variables are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The basilar papilla of the lizard Calotes versicolor contains about 225 sensory cells. These are of two types: the short-haired type A cells in the ventral (apical) part of the organ, and the type B cells with long hair bundles, in the dorsal (basal) part of the organ. The type A cells are unidirectionally oriented and are covered by a tectorial membrane while the type B cells lack a covering structure and their hair bundles are oriented bidirectionally. Apart from those differences, the type A and type B cells are similar. They are columnar, and display the features common to most sensory cells in inner ear epithelia. The sensory cells are separated by supporting cells, which have long slender processes that keep the sensory cells apart. Close to the surface of the basilar papilla a terminal bar of specialized junctions interlocks adjacent cells. Below this, adjacent supporting cells are linked by an occluding junction. The cochlear nerve enters from the medial (neural) aspect. The fibres of the nerve lose their myelin sheaths as they enter the basilar papilla. Each sensory cell is associated with several nerve endings. All the nerves identified were afferent. Marked variations were seen between nerve endings in the basilar papilla, but no morphological equivalents of any functional differences were observed. This work is supported by grant no. Alopecia is not a critical disease; however it is a disease that can affect the quality of life. Many remedies have been developed to cure alopecia, but only two have been approved by the FDA. Due to the steadily increasing number of young alopecia patients, the need for new therapies for curing alopecia is very high. Recent studies on cell therapy have reported using technique to treat various diseases. We introduce upgraded hair cell therapy which tested hair structure inducing activity with bioartificial dermal papilla tissue. Hair follicles contain two types of stem cells: Outer root sheath cells (ORSCs) derived epithelial cells, and dermal cells (DPCs). In this study, we reconstructed DP-like tissues (DPLTs) using cultured dermal papilla cells (DPCs) from human hair follicles. The DPLTs were produced special media (Dermal Papilla Forming Media: DPFM) conditions in vitro, which can induce epithelial stands from implanted healthy hair without DP. We tested in vivo hair-inducing with a modified hair sandwich model. Two to three weeks DPLT injection into the mouse scalp skin, we observed new hair in the injected site and detected injected human cells from DPLTs and Outer Root Sheath Cells (ORSCs) in the new hair via human Alu-DNA-specific probe. In the future, reconstructed DPLTs may be used in in vitro studies of hair development and the morphogenesis mechanism, as well as in vitro studies of the efficacy and toxicity of drugs for baldness. These tissues will be used as an alternative medicine product for hair transplantation  相似文献

Summary Mammals and birds have independently developed different populations of sensory cells grouped across the width of their auditory papillae. Although in mammals there is clear evidence for disparate functions for the two hair-cell populations, the different anatomical pattern in birds has made comparisons difficult. In two species of birds, we have used single-fibre staining techniques to trace physiologically-characterized primary auditory nerve fibres to their peripheral synapses. As in mammals, acoustically-active afferent fibres of these birds innervate exclusively the neurally-lying group of hair cells in a 11 relationship, suggesting important parallels in the functional organization of the auditory papillae in these two vertebrate classes. In addition, we found a strong trend of the threshold to acoustic stimuli at the characteristic frequency across the width of the avian papilla.Abbreviations IHC inner hair cell(s) - OHC outer hair cell(s) - SHC short hair cell(s) - THC tall hair cell(s)  相似文献

The morphology of the sensory epithelia of the sacculus in two species of hake, Merluccius capensis and M. paradoxus, was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The sensory epithelia have two morphological features that are very different from other gadiform species. These include the presence of two large areas which are only linked by a narrow neck, and the larger proportion of hair cells oriented in the rostrocaudal axis than in other species. The deeper-dwelling species, M. paradoxus, has a larger proportion of hair cell with short ciliary bundles than does the shallower-dwelling species, M. capensis. These morphological specializations could improve the acoustic diserimination and localization capabilities of these species, possibly related to an increase in sensitivity to higher frequency sounds in the deeper-dwelling species. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The hair cell polarization of the various sensory epithelia in the inner ear was examined in two species of flatfish, the Plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and the Dab (Limanda limanda). The hair cells in the macula utriculi are polarized in the pattern usually seen for this macula in vertebrates. In the macula sacculi and macula lagenae the hair cell polarization is different from that hitherto described from bony fishes and other vertebrates. The polarization seen in these maculae in the flatfish explains their ability to sense movements in all directions, which is necessary if these sensory areas are the most important inner ear organs in the regulation of postural orientation.  相似文献

The present study aimed to investigate the differentiation of chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) primordial germ cells (PGCs) in duck (Anas domesticus) gonads. Chimeric ducks were produced by transferring chicken PGCs into duck embryos. Transfer of 200 and 400 PGCs resulted in the detection of a total number of 63.0 ± 54.3 and 116.8 ± 47.1 chicken PGCs in the gonads of 7-day-old duck embryos, respectively. The chimeric rate of ducks prior to hatching was 52.9% and 90.9%, respectively. Chicken germ cells were assessed in the gonad of chimeric ducks with chicken-specific DNA probes. Chicken spermatogonia were detected in the seminiferous tubules of duck testis. Chicken oogonia, primitive and primary follicles, and chicken-derived oocytes were also found in the ovaries of chimeric ducks, indicating that chicken PGCs are able to migrate, proliferate, and differentiate in duck ovaries and participate in the progression of duck ovarian folliculogenesis. Chicken DNA was detected using PCR from the semen of chimeric ducks. A total number of 1057 chicken eggs were laid by Barred Rock hens after they were inseminated with chimeric duck semen, of which four chicken offspring hatched and one chicken embryo did not hatch. Female chimeric ducks were inseminated with chicken semen; however, no fertile eggs were obtained. In conclusion, these results demonstrated that chicken PGCs could interact with duck germinal epithelium and complete spermatogenesis and eventually give rise to functional sperm. The PGC-mediated germline chimera technology may provide a novel system for conserving endangered avian species.  相似文献
