Mismatch negativity has been studied under the conditions of dichotic stimulation by deviant stimuli that either changed their azimuth from zero to 4.5°, 13.5°, and 22.5° or moved with small velocities from the head midline to one of the ears. The reference stimuli were located along the head midline. Our experiments have shown that both a discontinuous increase in the azimuth and an increase in the velocity of moving stimuli are accompanied by an increase in the amplitude of mismatch negativity. This process is more pronounced in the cases of (1) an instantaneous change in the deviant azimuth compared to its movement, (2) a longer duration of the deviant sound, (3) action of the deviant in the right hemisphere, and (4) the frontal derivation. The correlations of changes in the mismatch negativity with psychophysical data on the resolution of the human auditory system are considered.  相似文献

The effect of stimulus duration on the mismatch negativity in the auditory event-related potentials was used to study the role of mismatch negativity (MMN) in discrimination of short acoustical stimuli. We compared discrimination of different short acoustical stimuli in active variant of "odd ball" paradigm. It was shown that it is possible to discriminate between standard and deviant acoustical stimuli which do not produce MMN in passive condition. It makes possible to estimate behavioural significance of MMN in active discrimination task. If the MMN had not been recorded in passive condition, that leads to an increase of reaction time in active paradigm approximately by 50 ms.  相似文献

Brain potentials were recorded from 12 normal subjects engaged in an auditory target detection task (target stimulus probability of 0.2, stimulus rate of 1 every 2 sec) when instructions were (1) to press a response button with the thumb of the dominant hand to each target or (2) to keep a mental count of each target. A pre-stimulus slow negative potential was identified before every stimulus except non-targets immediately after targets. The amplitude of the pre-stimulus negativity was significantly affected by task instructions and was up to 4 times larger during the button press than the mental count condition. In contrast, the amplitudes and latencies of the event-related components (N100, P200, N200 and P300), when slow potentials were removed by filtering, were not different as a function of press or count instructions. The immediately preceding stimulus sequence affected both the amplitude and onset latency of the pre-stimulus negativity; both measures increased as the number of preceding non-targets increased. The amplitude of the pre-stimulus negative shift to targets also increased significantly as RT speed decreased. The major portion of the pre-stimulus negative potential is considered a readiness potential (RP) reflecting preparations to make a motor response. The amplitude of the RP during the target detection task did not significantly lateralize in contrast to the RP accompanying self-paced movements.  相似文献

A number of EEG studies have investigated the time course of brain activation for biological movement over this last decade, however the temporal dynamics of processing are still debated. Moreover, the role of direction of movement has not received much attention even though it is an essential component allowing us to determine the intentions of the moving agent, and thus permitting the anticipation of potential social interactions.In this study, we examined event-related responses (ERPs) in 15 healthy human participants to light point walkers and their scrambled counterparts, whose movements occurred either in the radial or in the lateral plane. Compared to scrambled motion (SM), biological motion (BM) showed an enhanced negativity between 210 and 360ms. A source localization algorithm (sLORETA) revealed that this was due to an increase in superior and middle temporal lobe activity. Regarding direction, we found that radial BM produced an enhanced P1 compared to lateral BM, lateral SM and radial SM. This heightened P1 was due to an increase in activity in extrastriate regions, as well as in superior temporal, medial parietal and medial prefrontal areas. This network is known to be involved in decoding the underlying intentionality of the movement and in the attribution of mental states. The social meaning signaled by the direction of biological motion therefore appears to trigger an early response in brain activity.  相似文献

The increase in conductance, which accompanies the spike in the presence of sea water, is followed by a decrease to below the resting level, here designated as the "initial after-impedance," which lasts 3 msec. and is 3 per cent as great as the increase. Treatment with cevadine usually obliterates the latter but leaves the former essentially unaltered. In addition, the alkaloid gives rise to periodic conductance increases followed by a prolonged, exponentially decaying elevated conductance (the "negativity after-impedance") which correspond closely to potential oscillations and to the negative after-potential. These are also only a few per cent of the major conductance change. Veratridine causes a conductance increase which lasts longer and which also conforms closely with earlier after-potential results. Preliminary calculations indicate that the negativity after-impedance and the negative after-potential may be due to the subsidence of an elevated chloride permeability. However, no satisfactory explanation is available for the initial after-impedance or for the temporal course of the conductance changes associated with oscillations in membrane potential.  相似文献

The problems that arise in the interpretation of experimental data on chemical carcinogenesis are addressed. In particular, the difficulties in demonstrating negative results are shown to present problems in delineating carcinogens from noncarcinogens. The use of the virtually safe dose estimated under the assumption of low dose linearity is shown to lead to potentially anomalous results if used indiscriminately in bioassays in which no statistically significant increase in tumor occurrence is induced. It is suggested that there is a need to establish an operational definition of negativity in carcinogenesis, with the realization that this definition may be revised in light of new information. The establishment of negativity in aligning data from positive and negative experiments and in considering possible thresholds is also discussed.  相似文献

In adults and seven- to eight-year-old children, event-related potentials (ERPs) were analyzed during quiet observation and detailed paired comparison of visual stimuli. In both age groups, we showed the differences in the initial stages (component N1) of sensory analysis in these situations. In adults, an increase in the negativity during the initial stages of analysis was observed in the caudal and central areas of the cortex during presentation of standard and test stimuli. In the frontal areas of the cortex, an increase in the negative potential was observed only in ERPs induced by the test stimulus. In children, an increase in the negativity at the initial phases of analysis of stimuli in the situation of working memory, as compared to quiet observation, was confined to the caudal areas of the cortex. Differential curves that characterize analysis of standard and test stimuli showed age-related differences in the initial and late phases of information processing under the conditions of working memory. In adults, the differential curves that characterize analysis of the standard stimulus were represented by negative phases, and the curves related to the test stimulus, by positive phases. In children, late phases of analysis of the standard and test stimuli had smaller differences as compared to adults: the late positive wave was predominant in the responses to both standard and test stimulus in the caudal areas of the cortex. In the frontal areas, there was no considerable increase in the amplitude of the late positive wave in response to the test stimulus. This fact, together with the absence of enhancement of initial negativity in the frontal areas, which reflects analysis of the test stimulus, indicates that the prefrontal cortex plays a smaller role in the comparison of the memory trace with the current information in seven- to eight-year-old children. The data obtained suggest that the central executive of working memory is not sufficiently mature in children aged seven to eight years.  相似文献

Lexical decision task in an event-related potential experiment was used in order to determine the organization of mental lexicon regarding the polimorphemic words: are they stored as unanalyzable items or as separate morphemes? The results indicate the later: while monomorphemic words elicit N400 component, usually related to lexical-semantic processing, prefixed words and prefixed pseudo-words elicit left anterior negativity (LAN), usually related to grammatical (morphosyntactic) processes. These components indicate that the speakers apply grammatical (i.e., word-formation) rules and combine morphemes in order to obtain lexical meaning of the prefixed word.  相似文献

The Duffy blood group antigen is an essential receptor for Plasmodium vivax entry into erythrocytes in a process mediated by the parasite ligand, the Duffy binding protein (DBP). Recently, individuals living in a malaria endemic region of Papua New Guinea were identified as heterozygous for a new allele conferring Duffy negativity, which results in 50% less Duffy antigen on their erythrocytes. We demonstrate that DBP adherence to erythrocytes is significantly reduced for erythrocytes from heterozygous individuals who carry one Duffy antigen negativity allele. These data provide evidence that emergence of this new allelic form of Duffy negativity is correlated with resistance against vivax malaria.  相似文献

Median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded in a group of 35 normal children aged 6–36 months and related to body length, body weight and head circumference. Recordings were made while the child was awake using the following derivations: ipsilateral clavicle - Fpz; seventh cervical vertebra (CV7) - Fpz; contralateral C′ - Fpz. the clavicular-Fpz response was bilobed in 77% of the recordings, the initial being designated CL1 and the following negativity, CL2. Early negativities, coincident in latency with CL1 and CL2, were often present inin CV7-Fpz recordings, however, a negativity longer in latency than CL2 was always present, was designated CVN, and preceded a prominent positivity. A scalp-recorded early negativity (N1) and a following positivity (P1) were well defined in all recordings.The latency of CL1, CL2 and CVN increased with an increase in age and stature. In contrast, significant negative correlations were found between the latency of N1, P1, age and statur. The CL1-CVN interpeak latency did not correlate significantly with age, while the central conduction time (CVN-N1) declined with an increase in age and stature. These findings confirmed the complexity of SEP absolute and interpeak latency changes with an increase in age and stature in young children.  相似文献

Frog muscle endplates were explored with an extracellular microelectrode. An intracellular microelectrode nearby simultaneously monitored invasion of the endplate by a spike directly evoked by a third microelectrode placed away from the endplate in the same fiber. External positivities were seen only at sites generating miniature endplate potentials. The external positivity reached a maximum prior to the internally recorded potential and was followed by a small late negativity. Small movements away from active synaptic sites resulted in positive-negative-positive potential sequences characteristic of activity and propagation. Since the external potential is a function of membrane current, the absence of negativity associated with the rising phase of the spike indicates the absence of inward current at synaptic sites. Thus, the synaptic membrane appears not to be excited by a depolarization of the magnitude of an action potential. In an Appendix it is shown that the late negativity and earlier maximum of the external potential can be accounted for by capacitative current through passive membrane.  相似文献

It is shown, that the physical load "to overflowing" is connected with heterogeneous changes in the mental capacity of students. In students with the high preventive level of the working capacity an increase of the mental capacity by the model physical load on the bicycle is due to not only an increase of the physical capacity, but also to accumulation of the tiredness after load. Stimulation of the mental capacity necessitates playing and cyclic loads, or the application of stepwise increasing load (2 w/kg, 6-9 min).  相似文献

This study explored the possibility of using biofeedback to arrest spontaneous declines in tonic electrodermal levels. For 3 days, 10 subjects (S) received 20 minutes of training in increasing skin potential level (SPL) negativity (arrested declines), followed by 20 minutes of training in decreasing SPL negativity (facilitating declines), with reverse order for half of the Ss. Simultaneous analogue and binary feedback of SPL were used. Training in the direction of SPL increases resulted in arrest of spontaneous declines in SPL negativity but did not result in large-magnitude increases above baseline. Training in the direction of SPL decreases facilitated declines in SPL. The absolute mean difference between the increase condition and the decrease condition on the 3rd day was 8.28 mV. Correlations suggested that considerable intraindividual variability may have been independently related to the Locus of Control personality dimension and to a Law of Initial Values limitation on SPL change. It was concluded that SPL was controllable to the extent of facilitating or arresting spontaneous declines.  相似文献

Sea water in which sodium has been replaced by potassium produces about the same degree of negativity in Halicystis and in Valonia. With increasing dilution of this sea water up to 1 ÷ 16 the degree of negativity steadily falls off in Halicystis. This differs from the situation in Valonia where Damon finds that with increasing dilution the negativity passes through a minimum after which increasing dilution produces increasing negativity. We found that the mismatch negativity (MMM) was absent in evoked potentials in passive condition for frequency deviant acoustical stimuli when stimulus duration was only 11-30 ms. But it was shown that it is possible for participants to fairly well discriminate these stimuli and the component N2b in RP was generated without preceding MMN. Processing negativity also was absent in potentials by the minimal stimulus duration (11 ms). Auditory discrimination nevertheless was still possible, but reaction time and number of committed errors increased significantly.  相似文献

The world around us appears stable in spite of our constantly moving head, eyes, and body. How this is achieved by our brain is hardly understood and even less so in the auditory domain. Using electroencephalography and the so-called mismatch negativity, we investigated whether auditory space is encoded in an allocentric (referenced to the environment) or craniocentric representation (referenced to the head). Fourteen subjects were presented with noise bursts from loudspeakers in an anechoic environment. Occasionally, subjects were cued to rotate their heads and a deviant sound burst occurred, that deviated from the preceding standard stimulus either in terms of an allocentric or craniocentric frame of reference. We observed a significant mismatch negativity, i.e., a more negative response to deviants with reference to standard stimuli from about 136 to 188 ms after stimulus onset in the craniocentric deviant condition only. Distributed source modeling with sLORETA revealed an involvement of lateral superior temporal gyrus and inferior parietal lobule in the underlying neural processes. These findings suggested a craniocentric, rather than allocentric, representation of auditory space at the level of the mismatch negativity.  相似文献

The spatial resolution of the human auditory system was studied under conditions, where the location of the sound source was changed according to different temporal patterns of interaural time delay. Two experimental procedures were run in the same group of subjects: a psychophysical procedure (the transformed staircase method) and an electrophysiological one (which requires recording of mismatch negativity, the auditory evoked response component). It was established that (1) the value of the mismatch negativity reflected the degree of spatial deviation of the sound source; (2) the mismatch negativity was elicited even at minimum (20μs) interaural time delays under both temporal patterns (abrupt azimuth change and gradual sound movement at different velocities); (3) an abrupt change of the sound source azimuth resulted in a greater mismatch negativity than gradual sound movement did if the interaural time delay exceeded 40 μs; (4) the discrimination threshold values of the interaural delay obtained in the psychophysical procedure were greater than the minimum interaural delays that elicited mismatch negativity, with the exception of the expert listeners, who exhibited no significant difference.  相似文献

Characteristics of mismatch negativity elicited by dichotic stimulation were examined using deviant stimuli simulating movement of fused auditory images towards the standard stimuli or in the reverse direction. The effect of stationary deviants localized at 90 degrees in respect to standards was also measured. The standard stimuli were localized near either of ears or along the head midline. The spatial locations were produced by introducing interaural time differences into the click trains. All deviant stimuli evoked the mismatch negativity. The deviants moving from standards seem to evoke the lowest mismatch negativity with the longest latency at all azimuthal locations of standard stimuli. Besides, the deviant shift from standards proved to be the only direction at which the characteristics of mismatch negativity depended upon the standard's azimuth. It is seems that the discrimination of interaural time delay is essentially dependent on the pattern of interaural delay changes at the moment when the deviant occurs.  相似文献

The initial process of identifying words from spoken language and the detection of more subtle regularities underlying their structure are mandatory processes for language acquisition. Little is known about the cognitive mechanisms that allow us to extract these two types of information and their specific time-course of acquisition following initial contact with a new language. We report time-related electrophysiological changes that occurred while participants learned an artificial language. These changes strongly correlated with the discovery of the structural rules embedded in the words. These changes were clearly different from those related to word learning and occurred during the first minutes of exposition. There is a functional distinction in the nature of the electrophysiological signals during acquisition: an increase in negativity (N400) in the central electrodes is related to word-learning and development of a frontal positivity (P2) is related to rule-learning. In addition, the results of an online implicit and a post-learning test indicate that, once the rules of the language have been acquired, new words following the rule are processed as words of the language. By contrast, new words violating the rule induce syntax-related electrophysiological responses when inserted online in the stream (an early frontal negativity followed by a late posterior positivity) and clear lexical effects when presented in isolation (N400 modulation). The present study provides direct evidence suggesting that the mechanisms to extract words and structural dependencies from continuous speech are functionally segregated. When these mechanisms are engaged, the electrophysiological marker associated with rule-learning appears very quickly, during the earliest phases of exposition to a new language.  相似文献
