A method of calculating the volume of a tree distal to a cut at the origin of a branch, using branching, diameter and length ratios, has been developed. The method was applied to bronchial tree casts from human, dog, sheep, hamster, and rat lungs. It was found that the exponenta in the equation weight=k×diameter a is approximately equal to 3.0 in sheep lung casts, as found by Hooper (1977), but it is greater than 3.0 in casts from the other four species.  相似文献

Bronchiectasis occurred naturally in 12-month-old spontaneously diabetic eSS male rats. The lungs of 3 and 6-month-old eSS rats were compared in eumetabolic eSS rats from three inbred lines consisting of inbred spontaneously diabetic eSS derived from IIM strain; these were compared with eumetabolic, outbred Wistar rats, paired by sex and age. Acrylic casts of bronchial tree were obtained after injection of a plastic substance. The casts were pruned to focus on the first four bronchial branchings. Diameter and volume of the conductive bronchial tree were determined using a binocular magnifier. Histological sections were obtained. All lines showed multiple bronchiectasis, mostly fusiform, bronchial dilatation and inflammatory response with lymphocytic infiltrates. These symptoms were much more severe in 180-day-old eSS males. Bacteria were isolated from the lungs in 70% of cases (n = 32), except in eSS rats. Pseudomonas spp. (38%) and Gram-positive cocci as coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp. (20%) were detected. Neither pathogenic bacteria nor saprophyte fungi were found. Although all lines were affected, diabetes in eSS appears to be an aggravating factor.  相似文献

Recent phylogenetic studies and taxonomic reviews have led to nearly complete resolution of the phylogenetic divisions within the old world rats and mice (Muridae, Murinae). The Micromys division and Pithecheir division are two notable exceptions where groupings of species into these divisions based on morphology and arboreal lifestyle have not been supported by phylogenetic evidence. Several enigmatic species from these divisions have been missing from molecular studies, preventing a rigorous revision of phylogenetic relationships. In this study, we sequenced for the first time one mitochondrial and three nuclear genes from South‐East Asian keystone species of these two arboreal divisions: Hapalomys delacouri (Micromys division), Lenothrix canus and Pithecheir parvus (Pithecheir division). We also complemented the molecular data already available for the two divisions with new data from Sundaic Chiropodomys, Indian Vandeleuria oleracea and the recently described Sulawesian Margaretamys christinae. Using this new phylogenetic framework and molecular dating methodologies, our study allows some more detailed classification of the former Micromys and Pithecheir divisions, while confirming their polyphyletic status. Specifically, the former Micromys division should now be split into four monotypic divisions: Chiropodomys, Hapalomys, Micromys and Vandeleuria divisions. The former Pithecheir division is likely to be refined and restricted to Pithecheir and probably Pithecheirops, whereas Lenothrix and Margaretamys should now be recognized as representatives of the Dacnomys division. Our findings have profound implications with regard to the systematics of Murinae, as well as to the early evolution of murine morphology and dental characters.  相似文献

The geometry and morphometry of intraacinar airways in rat and rabbit lungs were studied from silicone rubber casts. Acini, defined as the complex of alveolated airways distal to the "terminal" bronchiole, were trimmed off the bronchial tree. In both species, the acinar volume followed a log-normal distribution over a range in size of one order of magnitude. At an inflation level of 60% total lung capacity, their mean volume was 1.86 mm3 in the rat and 3.46 mm3 in the rabbit. On a representative sample of acini of different volumes, the branching pattern was characterized as irregular dichotomy, and the segment length and inner and outer diameters were measured. The average acinus had a mean of six generations in the rat and seven in the rabbit. Both showed a decrease in segment length and inner diameter with each generation. The mean longitudinal pathway length--that is, the distance from the initial acinar segment to the terminal sacs--was found to depend on the cube root of the acinar volume in both species. It was calculated at 1.46 and 1.95 mm for rat and rabbit, respectively.  相似文献

Hystrix javanica is endemic species in Indonesia. Study about fetal development of Hystrix javanica are very rare because of sample limitation. This study was carried out to describe the morphometrics and x-ray analysis of three fetuses in different stage to give basic information about fetal development of Hystrix javanica. Three fetus samples fixed in Bouin’s solution was used in this study. Observation was carried out to identify the characteristic of three fetus samples. This included the pattern of hair, body measurements, body volume, and body weight. X-ray analysis was carried out to know the ossification process in the fetal development. Statistical analysis was carried out using Microsoft 365® Excel program software. Three fetus samples had different specific hair pattern, that was hairless, smooth hairs, and smooth hairs with dense-non dense pattern. Body volume of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fetus were 23mL, 90mL, and 170mL, respectively. Body weight of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fetus were 19.5g, 79.22g, and 153.18g, respectively. Pearson’s correlation analysis shown strong relationship between total body length, front body length, back body length, horizontal body diameter, vertical body diameter, head length, and head diameter against body volume and body weight of three fetuses. Significant positive correlation was shown between horizontal body diameter, vertical body diameter, and head diameter against body volume and body length with P value < 0.05. Faint radiopaque images showed in the 2nd fetus sample and strong radiopaque images showed in the 3rd fetus sample. Radiopaque images were identified in the teeth, cranium, vertebrae, and extremities bones. In this study we concluded that there was a specific hair pattern in different fetal stage. All body measurements have positive correlation with body volume and body weight and x-ray analysis shown that the ossification of the bone was started to happen while the smooth hair was growth.  相似文献

Previous theoretical research has suggested that lengths of tree roots can be estimated on the basis of their branching characteristics, if branching has a fractal pattern that is independent of root diameter. This theory and its underlying assumptions was tested for Grevillea robusta trees at a site in Kenya by comparing estimates of root length from conventional soil coring and the output of a fractal branching algorithm. The trees were in a 4-year-old stand established on a 3 × 4 m planting grid. Root lengths (L r) in four units of the planting grid were estimated by soil coring. Branching characteristics determined by examination of 32 excavated roots from 16 trees were: The number of branches at each branching point; the length of links between branching points (L l); the diameter of root tips; and parameters which describe the change in diameter at each branching point. Each was found to be independent of root size. These data were used to parameterise a branching algorithm, which was then used to estimate numbers of root links in the four grid units (n l) from root diameters at the bases of the four trees at the corners of each unit. Root lengths, from L r = n1 L1, severely underestimated L r. This discrepancy probably resulted from inaccuracy in the parameterisation of the branching algorithm, as output from the algorithm was very sensitive to small changes in parameter values. Use of fractal branching rules alone to estimate roots length does not appear possible unless the algorithm is calibrated to adjust for errors in parameter estimation. Calibration can be achieved by calculation of an 'effective link length', L eff 1, from L r/n l, where L r is measured by a reference method such as soil coring.  相似文献

该研究以共存于同一暖温带森林的6个外生菌根(ECM)树种为研究对象,测定分析不同根序(1~5级)和功能根系(吸收细根和运输细根)的主要形态和构型属性及ECM侵染率,探究不同外生菌根树种的根属性变异模式及其与菌根真菌侵染程度的关系。结果表明:(1)随着根序的增加,不同树种根直径和单根长度均增加,而比根长和根分支强度均降低;根属性在同一根序下均存在显著的种间差异,尤其是2个裸子植物(落叶松和油松)的根直径较其他4个被子植物大。(2)同一树种的所有根属性在吸收细根和运输细根之间均有显著差异;吸收细根和运输细根的根直径、比根长和根组织密度在树种间均存在显著差异,而其单根长度和根分支强度在树种间无显著差异。(3)ECM侵染率以落叶松最高,千金榆和白桦最低,且与根尖直径呈显著正相关关系,与根尖比根长呈显著负相关关系。研究发现,基于根序或者功能根系,根属性在种间的变异模式不完全一致,单根长度和根分支强度在两个功能根系中均没有表现出显著的种间差异;吸收细根的比根长和根分支强度的变异系数较大,对环境变化有较敏感的响应;古老树种的根直径相对较粗,对菌根真菌的依赖性更高。  相似文献

Breast volume and body composition were measured in 45 adult females to determine the contribution of breast weight and breast volume to total body fat. Plaster casts were filled with sand of known density to obtain breast volume. Breast weight was computed as breast volume times its density. The correlation between total breast volume and percent body fat was r = .40. Breast weight (X = 484 grams) accounted for 3.5 percent of the total weight of body fat, and at most, 12 percent of the estimated quantities of sex-specific fat. A theoretical model is proposed for the distribution of body fat in the female which subdivides total body fat into three components: reserve storage fat, essential fat, and expendable storage fat.  相似文献

Most bird species that nest in tree cavities globally occur in diverse assemblages in little-studied tropical and subtropical forests which have high rates of habitat loss. Conservation of these communities will require an understanding of how species traits, such as body size, influence nest-site selection. We examined patterns of nest-site selection of secondary cavity-nesting birds at the nest patch, tree and cavity scale, and investigated how these patterns are influenced by body size. Using conditional logistic regression, we compared characteristics of 155 nest tree cavities paired with 155 unused tree cavities in quebracho Schinopsis balansae forests in Chaco National Park, Argentina (2016–2018). The odds of a cavity being used for nesting increased with its depth and height above ground, decreased with entrance size, and were greater for dead trees than live. Small-bodied (13–90 g) species used floor diameters in proportion to availability, but medium- (150–200 g) and large-bodied (400–700 g) species selected cavities with larger floors. Model selection indicated that characteristics at the nest patch scale (canopy cover, tree density) had little effect on nest-site selection when cavity-scale variables were included. Cavity floor diameter, entrance size, cavity height and tree diameter (but not cavity depth) increased with body mass, and larger bird species more often used live trees. Two tree species proved to be key for the community: large and medium-sized birds used almost exclusively large live Schinopsis balansae, whereas small birds used live and dead Prosopis spp. in a proportion greater than its availability. Small birds could be differentiated according to species-specific cavity characteristics, but medium and large species overlapped considerably with one another. Although body mass explained much of the overall variation in tree and cavity characteristics between small and medium/large species, several small-bodied species consistently used cavities outside of the expected characteristics for their body size, suggesting that other natural history traits may play important roles in nest-site selection by small-bodied birds. To retain the full suite of secondary cavity-nesters in species-rich tropical and subtropical forests, it is necessary to conserve a diversity of trees and cavities that meet the full range of nesting requirements of these trait-diverse communities.  相似文献

Growth performance of nine native tropical tree species planted on mine spoil under two levels of NPK treatment was studied by measuring height and diameter. Of the nine species, four were leguminous. All the tree species responded positively to NPK fertilization; however, the impact on leguminous species was little compared to non‐leguminous species. In general, the height/diameter ratio decreased from control to full‐dose NPK treatment, suggesting that nutrient enrichment influenced the resource allocation pattern such that the diameter growth was favored. The log‐transformed height‐diameter relationships were significant for the three treatments in all the tree species. The slopes ( β ) obtained were compared with three different models of tree growth (i.e., elastic similarity, geometric similarity, and constant stress). Acacia catechu, Dalbergia sissoo, Gmelina arborea, and Azadirachta indica fitted the elastic similarity model, whereas Pongamia pinnata and Phyllanthus emblica followed the constant stress model. Tectona grandis was the only species that followed the geometric similarity model. In Albizia lebbeck and Terminalia bellirica, the β values were considerably lower (i.e., below 0.5) and these two species did not fit any of the three models of tree growth. In several cases the β values were considerably influenced by nutrient enrichment. Litterfall from a Melaleuca forest was investigated as part of chemical cycling studies on the Magela Creek floodplain in tropical, northern Australia. The forest contained two species of tree, Melaleuca cajaputi and Melaleuca viridiflora, with a combined average density of 294 trees ha–1. The M. viridiflora trees had diameter breast height measurements ranging from 11.8 to 62.0 cm, median class 25.1–30.0cm and a mean value of 29.2±1.0 cm, compared to 13.0 to 66.3 cm, 30.1–35.0cm and 33.5±1.0cm for M. cajaputi trees. A regression model between tree height, diameter breast height and fresh weight was determined and used to calculate average tree weights of 775±1.6kg for M. viridiflora and 1009±1.6kg for M. cajaputi, and a total above-ground fresh weight of 263±0.3t ha–1. The weight of litter recorded each month on the ground beneath the tree canopy ranged from 582±103 to 2176±376 g m–2 with a monthly mean value of 1105±51 g m–2. The coefficient of variation of 52% on this mean indicates the large spatial and temporal variability in litter distribution over the study site. This variability was greatly affected by the pattern of water flow and litter transport during the Wet season. Litterfall from the trees was evaluated using two techniques - nets and trays. The results from these techniques were not significantly different with annual litterfall collected in the nets being 705 ± 25 g m–2 and in the trays 716±49 g m–2. The maximum monthly amount of litterfall, 108 ±55g m–2, occurred during the Dry season months of June–July. Leaf material comprised 70% of the total annual weight of litter, 480±29 g m–2 in the nets and 495 ± 21 g m–2 in the trays. The tree density and weight of litter suggest that the Melaleuca forests are highly productive and contribute a large amount of material to the detrital/debris turnover cycle on the floodplain.  相似文献

Studies on the amphibian respiratory tract microvascular anatomy are few. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of vascular corrosion casts (VCCs) and light microscopy of perfusion‐fixed tissue sections, we studied the bronchial microvascular anatomy in the adult South African Clawed Toad, Xenopus laevis Daudin. Histomorphology showed that the bronchial wall consists (from luminal to abluminal) of squamous epithelium, subepithelial capillary bed, cartilage rings or cartilage plates, a layer of dense connective tissue, a layer of smooth muscle cells, and squamous epithelium (serosa). SEM of VCCs reveals that bilaterally a ventral, a dorsal (Ø 77.21 ± 7.61 μm), and a caudal bronchial artery supply the bronchial subepithelial capillary bed. The ventral bronchial artery has 3–4 branching orders (interbranching distances: 506.3 ± 392.12 μm; branching angles of first‐ and second‐order bifurcations: 24.60 ± 10.24° and 29.59 ± 14.3°). Casts of bronchial arteries display imprints of flow dividers and sphincters. Cranial and caudal bronchial veins (Ø 154.78 ± 49.68 μm) drain into pulmonary veins. They lack microvenous valves. The location of the dense subepithelial capillary meshwork just beneath the thin squamous bronchial epithelium and its drainage into the pulmonary veins make it likely that in Xenopus, bronchi assist in aerial gas exchange.  相似文献

Our study combined a mitochondrial cytochrome b phylogeny with cranial measurements from giant pouched rats collected across sub‐Saharan Africa. The mitochondrial phylogeny resolves two West African clades and a clade with east and central Africa representatives. This last clade can be further divided into four subclades. Altogether they represent six species (Cricetomys gambianus, Cricetomys ansorgei, Cricetomys emini, and three undescribed taxa) that can be distinguished on the basis of their mitochondrial DNA sequences and craniometry. In the absence of adequate craniometric data the existence of Cricetomys kivuensis cannot be confirmed by our data. Our combined molecular and craniometric data allowed us to broadly delineate the distribution ranges of the detected species. Cricetomys gambianus occurs in the savannah and forest clearings of West Africa. Cricetomys ansorgei is distributed in the savannah of East and southern Africa. Cricetomys emini, as currently recognized across the Guineo‐Congolian forest of Africa, is shown to be diphyletic. Cricetomys sp. 1, a separate operational taxonomic unit closely resembling C. emini, occurs in the forest zone of West Africa. An undescribed sister‐species of C. ansorgei, Cricetomys sp. 2, occurs in the forest of Central Africa along the left bank of the Congo River. Cricetomys sp. 3 occurs on the right bank of the Congo River from Cameroon to the Republic of Congo, whereas the true C. emini also occurs on the right bank of the Congo River but appears to be restricted to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Cranial phenotype within the genus tends to conform to ecological zonation (either forest or savannah) rather than to phylogenetic affiliation of the species concerned, suggesting that diversifying selection across environmental gradients could be responsible for biological diversification within the genus.  相似文献

Background

Computed tomographic (CT) airway lumen narrowing is associated with lower lung function. Although volumetric CT measures of airways (wall volume [WV] and lumen volume [LV]) compared to cross sectional measures can more accurately reflect bronchial morphology, data of their use in never smokers is scarce. We hypothesize that native tracheobronchial tree morphology as assessed by volumetric CT metrics play a significant role in determining lung function in normal subjects. We aimed to assess the relationships between airway size, the projected branching generation number (BGN) to reach airways of <2mm lumen diameter –the site for airflow obstruction in smokers- and measures of lung function including forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of vital capacity (FEF 25–75).

Methods

We assessed WV and LV of segmental and subsegmental airways from six bronchial paths as well as lung volume on CT scans from 106 never smokers. We calculated the lumen area ratio of the subsegmental to segmental airways and estimated the projected BGN to reach a <2mm-lumen-diameter airway assuming a dichotomized tracheobronchial tree model. Regression analysis was used to assess the relationships between airway size, BGN, FEF 25–75, and FEV1.

Results

We found that in models adjusted for demographics, LV and WV of segmental and subsegmental airways were directly related to FEV1 (P <0.05 for all the models). In adjusted models for age, sex, race, LV and lung volume or height, the projected BGN was directly associated with FEF 25–75 and FEV1 (P = 0.001) where subjects with lower FEV1 had fewer calculated branch generations between the subsegmental bronchus and small airways. There was no association between airway lumen area ratio and lung volume.

Conclusion

We conclude that in never smokers, those with smaller central airways had lower airflow and those with lower airflow had less parallel airway pathways independent of lung size. These findings suggest that variability in the structure of the tracheobronchial tree may influence the risk of developing clinically relevant smoking related airway obstruction.

The aim of this study was to determine whether or not sexual maturation is attained in the family group in captive‐born Goeldi's monkey (Callimico goeldii) and if so, at what age and body weight. To monitor ovarian activity in 14 female Goeldi's monkeys, urinary content of pregnanediol‐3α‐glucuronide (PdG) was determined using radioimmunoassay. Urinary samples were collected between the ages of 6 and 70 weeks. Subjects became sexually mature while still housed in their family groups, at a median age of 57 weeks (48–< 70 weeks). Median body weight at the age of sexual maturity was 473 g (N = 10; 420–543 g). This corresponded to 90% of the median non‐pregnant body weight of breeding females in our colony (526 g, N = 8). Therefore, Goeldi's monkey is similar to Leontopithecus but different from Cebuella, Callithrix, and Saguinus, in terms of daughters ovulating in the family group and at a relatively young age. Am. Two models of binary tree growth are examined in terms of the Strahler order branching ratio (Rb) and the types of vertex produced during growth, and their inter-relationship. The sequential growth model is that described by Van Pelt and Verwer (1985,Bull. math. Biol. 47, 323–336) in which random growth occurs according to attributed probabilities on terminal or internal segments, one branch at a time. This model generates values ofRb≥3. The synchronous growth model is new and permits more than one segment to branch at a time, again randomly with attributed probabilities. This model generates values ofRb≥2 and in particular, when only terminal branching is permitted, gives 2≤Rb<3. Such a model might explain the branching in the human bronchial tree, in which 2.5≤Rb≤2.8. Our synchronous model is an alternative to the centrifugal-order-dependent sequential model of Van Pelt and Verwer.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine how root length, diameter, specific root length, and root carbon and nitrogen concentrations were related to root branching patterns. The branching root systems of two temperate tree species, Acer saccharum Marsh. and Fraxinus americana L., and two perennial herbs from horizontal rhizomes, Hydrophyllum canadense L. and Viola pubescens Ait., were quantified by dissecting entire root systems collected from the understory of an A. saccharum-Fagus grandifolia Ehrh. forest. The root systems of each species grew according to a simple branching process, with laterals emerging from the main roots some distance behind the tip. Root systems normally consisted of only 4–6 branches (orders). Root diameter, length, and number of branches declined with increasing order and there were significant differences among species. Specific root length increased with order in all species. Nitrogen concentration increased with order in the trees, but remained constant in the perennial herbs. More than 75% of the cumulative root length of tree seedling root systems was accounted for by short (2–10 mm) lateral roots almost always <0.3 mm in diameter. Simple assumptions suggest that many tree roots normally considered part of the dynamic fine-root pool (e.g., all roots <2.0 mm in diameter) are too large to exhibit rapid rates of production and mortality. The smallest tree roots may be the least expensive to construct but the most expensive to maintain based on an increase in N concentration with order. 1. The elimination rate of radiocaesium in brown trout Salmo trutta L. was determined in the laboratory at four water temperatures (range 4.4–15.6°C). In the experiments three or four homogenous size-groups of fish (mean weights 23–496 g) were studied at each temperature. 2. The brown trout received acute oral doses of 134Cs and were killed at intervals for radioactivity counting. The retention versus time curves were composed of two distinct exponential components. The long-lived component was quantitatively the most important for retention of radiocaesium. Elimination rate increased with increasing water temperature and decreased with increasing body weight. 3. The biological half-life of 134Cs (Tb, days) was related to fresh body weight (W, g) and water temperature (t, °C) by the equation: Tb= 290 ×W°.176× e-°.106×t. The elimination rate of Cs could be predicted from weight-specific metabolic rate as given by Elliott's equations for brown trout.  相似文献

Genetic parameters were evaluated for growth and cone characteristics (tree height, diameter at breast height, volume, cone number, thousand seeds weight and single cone seeds weight) on 86 half-sib families of Pinus koraiensis aged 31 years. Analyses of variance revealed significant differences (p < 0.001) in all growth and cone traits among families while no significant differences were detected among blocks and the interaction between blocks and families. The average family values for growth traits were 17.22 m, 8.67 cm and 0.43 m3 for tree height, diameter at breast height and volume, respectively. The average cone number, thousand seeds weight and single cone seeds weight were 17.57, 748.91 g and 77.25 g, respectively. Genotypic additive variance and phenotypic variances ranged from 0.00009 to 3.820 and from 0.0005 to 23.066, while genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation ranged from 2.693% to 37.196% and 4.963% to 60.595%, respectively. Heritability at the individual and family level ranged from 0.152 to 0.215 and 0.611 to 0.862, respectively. Growth traits were significantly positively correlated with each other, but cone traits showed a weak correlation with growth traits. Based on 10% selection rate, nine families each were selected as elite materials in terms of high performance in volume and cone numbers, with 22.16% and 43.82% genetic gain in volume and cone number, respectively. These results provide beneficial information to select excellent families and establish orchards of P. koraiensis from improved seeds.  相似文献
