Plant sterols combined with exercise beneficially alter lipid levels in hypercholesterolemic adults. The effect of this combination therapy on other indicators of coronary heart disease risk, however, has yet to be determined. The objective of this trial was to investigate the effect of plant sterols and exercise, alone and in combination, on levels of apolipoprotein (apo) A1 and B, adiponectin, ghrelin, and growth hormone in previously sedentary hypercholesterolemic adults. In an 8 week, parallel-arm trial, 84 subjects were randomized to 1 of 4 groups: combination, exercise, plant sterols, or control. Body mass decreased by 1.1% (p < 0.01) and 0.9% (p < 0.05) in the combination and exercise group, respectively. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels decreased (p < 0.01) by 0.30 mmol/L in the combination group and by 0.49 mmol/L in the plant sterol group. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels increased by 7.5% and 9.5% (p < 0.01) in the combination and exercise groups, respectively. Plant sterols increased (p < 0.05) adiponectin levels by 16%. No change in apoA1, apoB, ghrelin, or growth hormone levels were noted in any intervention group. ApoA1 was correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = 0.33, p = 0.01), whereas apoB was weakly related to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (r = 0.13, p = 0.002). Adiponectin was associated with body mass index (r = -0.10, p = 0.006) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = 0.17, p = 0.0003). These findings suggest that plant sterols can increase adiponectin levels, thereby possibly reducing the risk of future coronary heart disease.  相似文献

At present, dyslipidemia is most commonly treated with lipid-altering pharmacological therapies. However, safety concerns regarding the use of these agents have prompted the need for safe and efficacious nonpharmacological lipid-altering interventions. One such natural therapy is the combination of plant sterols and endurance training. This combination lifestyle intervention has been shown to decrease total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations while increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentrations. However, the mechanisms that underlie these positive lipid alterations have yet to be clarified. Thus, the purpose of this review is to evaluate individual effects of plant sterols and exercise training on lipid levels while attempting to elucidate the possible independent and synergistic mechanisms of action responsible for these modulations. Results reveal that plant sterols decrease both total and LDL cholesterol levels by reducing exogenous cholesterol absorption by way of cholesterol displacement in the intestinal lumen. Additionally, the intestinal membrane transport proteins, ABCG5, ABCG8, as well as NPC1L1, have also been implicated in plant sterol-mediated cholesterol lowering. Conversely, exercise decreases triglyceride levels by reducing hepatic very low-density lipoprotein secretion and increasing skeletal lipoprotein lipase activity. In addition, endurance training was shown to increase HDL cholesterol levels by way of HDL subfraction alterations, in conjunction with changing reverse cholesterol transport enzyme activities. Moreover, plant sterols and exercise may work synergistically to alter lipid levels by modulating lipoprotein transport, composition, release and metabolism. In sum, the present review lends further insight as to the metabolic benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle, including plant sterols and endurance training, in the treatment of dyslipidemia.  相似文献

Ginseng, an herbal plant, has been ingested by many athletes in Oriental regions of the world in order to improve stamina and to facilitate rapid recovery from injuries. However, adequate investigation has not been conducted to examine the ergogenic effects of ginseng. To examine the effects of ginseng supplements on hormonal status following acute resistance exercise, eight male college students were randomly given water (control; CON) or 20 g of ginseng root extract (GIN) treatment immediately after a standardized exercise bout. Venous blood samples were drawn before and immediately after exercise and at 4 time points during a 2-hour recovery period. Human growth hormone, testosterone, cortisol, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels were determined by radioimmunoassay. The responses of plasma hormones following ginseng consumption were not significant between CON and GIN treatments during the 2-hour recovery period. These results do not support the use of ginseng to promote an anabolic hormonal status following resistance exercise.  相似文献

Abnormal cholesterol metabolism, including low intestinal cholesterol absorption and elevated synthesis, is prevalent in diabetes, obesity, hyperlipidemia, and the metabolic syndrome. Diet-induced weight loss improves cholesterol absorption in these populations, but it is not known if endurance exercise training also improves cholesterol homeostasis. To examine this, we measured circulating levels of campesterol, sitosterol, and lathosterol in 65 sedentary subjects (average age 59 years; with at least one metabolic syndrome risk factor) before and after 6 months of endurance exercise training. Campesterol and sitosterol are plant sterols that correlate with intestinal cholesterol absorption, while lathosterol is a marker of whole body cholesterol synthesis. Following the intervention, plant sterol levels were increased by 10% (p<0.05), but there was no change in plasma lathosterol. In addition, total and LDL-cholesterol were reduced by 0.16 mmol and 0.10 mmol, respectively (p<0.05), while HDL-C levels increased by 0.09 mmol (p<0.05). Furthermore, the change in plant sterols was positively correlated with the change in VO2max (r=0.310, p=0.004), independent of other metabolic syndrome risk factors. These data indicate that exercise training reduces plasma cholesterol despite increasing cholesterol absorption in subjects with metabolic syndrome risk factors.  相似文献

Students often prefer to study animals rather than plants, because they see plants as passive, less interesting organisms. This paper proposes a simple hands-on laboratory exercise for high-school students (grade 12) to arouse their interest in learning about plants and to demonstrate to them that plants are active organisms capable of defending themselves. In this classroom exercise, students investigate how a plant responds to an invader. As a model for study, the exercise uses three organisms: red chilli fruit, the yeast biological control agent Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and the pathogenic fungus Rhizopus stolonifer. Students gain basic knowledge about how plants defend themselves against pathogens by observing the physical changes of an infected wound site and by investigating the chemical compounds produced by plants in response to pathogen invasion; they are also encouraged to think critically about using biological control as a means to promote environmentally friendly agricultural practices.  相似文献

Legumes are considered to have beneficial health implications, which have been attributed to their phytochemical content. Polyphenols are considered the most important phytochemical compounds extensively studied for their antioxidant properties. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of potent antioxidant legume plant extracts on xanthine oxidase (XO), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. XO exerts a dual role, as it is the major contributor of free radicals during exercise while it generates uric acid, the most potent antioxidant molecule in plasma. CAT and SOD are two of the main enzymes of the antioxidant defence of tissues. We demonstrate that the majority of the extracts inhibited XO activity, but they had no effect on CAT inhibition and SOD induction when used at low concentrations. These results imply that the tested extracts may be considered as possible source of novel XO inhibitors. However, we have shown that allopurinol administration, a known XO inhibitor, before exercise reduces performance and induces oxidative stress in rats. Considering the fact that the extracts examined had an inhibitory effect on XO activity, possibly posing a restriction in their characterization as antioxidants, phytochemical antioxidant administration before exercise should probably be reconsidered.  相似文献

An expert elicitation exercise was undertaken to determine those components and processes that are most important for modeling plant uptake of organic chemicals. The state of our knowledge of these processes was also assessed. This semi-quantitative analysis allowed the construction of an idealized model with seven compartments; soil bulk, soil water, roots, stem, leaves, fruit, and air. Three main areas were identified further research: 1) the uptake of organic chemicals by fruit; 2) the internal transfer of organic chemicals between plant structures (e.g., stem and leaves); and 3) the transfer via the soil–air–plant pathway. Until new data becomes available to quantify these processes, it is proposed that an equilibrium partitioning approach is used between plant components other than fruit or that models consist of both an edible and inedible compartment.  相似文献

This laboratory exercise involves techniques that can be used to investigate induced plant defences. Runner beans are damaged, and the leaves that subsequently grow are tested for the presence of additional defence mechanisms. A control (undamaged) group is kept for comparison. Induced physical defences are indicated by an increase in the density of hairs (trichomes) on the leaves, and induced chemical defences by a decrease in the palatability of the leaves. The latter is tested by a bioassay using garden snails. These basic methods can be used to investigate a variety of defensive responses in plants.  相似文献

Legumes and the polyphenolic compounds present in them have gained a lot of interest due to their beneficial health implications. Dietary polyphenolic compounds, especially flavonoids, exert antioxidant properties and are potent inhibitors of xanthine oxidase (XO) activity. XO is the main contributor of free radicals during exercise but it is also involved in pathogenesis of several diseases such as vascular disorders, cancer and gout. In order to discover new natural, dietary XO inhibitors, some polyphenolic fractions and pure compounds isolated from two legume plant extracts were tested for their effects on XO activity. The fractions isolated from both Vicia faba and Lotus edulis plant extracts were potent inhibitors of XO with IC(50) values range from 40-135 μg/mL and 55-260 μg/mL, respectively. All the pure polyphenolic compounds inhibited XO and their K(i) values ranged from 13-767 μM. Ten of the compounds followed the non competitive inhibitory model whereas one of them was a competitive inhibitor. These findings indicate that flavonoid isolates from legume plant extracts are novel, natural XO inhibitors. Their mode of action is under investigation in order to examine their potential in drug design for diseases related to overwhelming XO action.  相似文献

Eight healthy men exercised to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer at a work load of 176 +/- 9 (SE) W corresponding to 67% (range 63-69%) of their maximal O2 uptake (exercise I). Exercise of the same work load was repeated after 75 min of recovery (exercise II). Exercise duration (range) was 65 (50-90) and 21 (14-30) min for exercise I and II, respectively. Femoral venous blood samples were obtained before and during exercise and analyzed for NH3 and lactate. Plasma NH3 was 12 +/- 2 and 19 +/- 6 mumol/l before exercise I and II, respectively and increased during exercise to exhaustion to peak values of 195 +/- 29 (exercise I) and 250 +/- 30 (exercise II) mumol/l, respectively. Plasma NH3 increased faster during exercise II compared with exercise I and at the end of exercise II was threefold higher than the value for the corresponding time of exercise I (P less than 0.001). Blood lactate increased during exercise I and after 20 min of exercise was 3.7 +/- 0.4 mmol/l and remained unchanged until exhaustion. During exercise II blood lactate increased less than during exercise I. It is concluded that long-term exercise to exhaustion results in large increases in plasma NH3 despite relatively low levels of blood lactate. It is suggested that the faster increase in plasma NH3 during exercise II (vs. exercise I) reflects an increased formation in the working muscle that may be caused by low glycogen levels and impairment of the ATP resynthesis.  相似文献

Five subjects (group 1) performed progressive treadmill exercise on 2 separate days, once while breathing room air (normoxemic) and the other time while breathing gas with a fractional inspired O2 of 17% (hypoxemic). Five other subjects (group 2) performed two progressive treadmill exercise tests on each of 2 separate days in a crossover design. On 1 day normoxemic exercise was first, followed by hypoxemic exercise, and on the other day the pattern was reversed. Plasma renin activity (PRA) increased to a similar extent with hypoxemic exercise as with normoxemic exercise. Plasma aldosterone concentrations (PAC) rose to a significantly higher level during normoxemic exercise than with hypoxemic exercise. Comparing changes in PRA to PAC with progressive exercise revealed dissociation of PAC from PRA during hypoxemic exercise. The PAC response remained depressed when normoxemic exercise followed hypoxemic exercise. These results indicate that hypoxemia interferes with PRA-mediated aldosterone secretions. The mechanism of this inhibition is unclear.  相似文献

The effects of prior moderate- and prior heavy-intensity exercise on the subsequent metabolic response to incremental exercise were examined. Healthy, young adult subjects (n = 8) performed three randomized plantar-flexion exercise tests: 1) an incremental exercise test (approximately 0.6 W/min) to volitional fatigue (Ramp); 2) Ramp preceded by 6 min of moderate-intensity, constant-load exercise below the intracellular pH threshold (pHT; Mod-Ramp); and 3) Ramp preceded by 6 min of heavy-intensity, constant-load exercise above pHT (Hvy-Ramp); the constant-load and incremental exercise periods were separated by 6 min of rest. (31)P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to continuously monitor intracellular pH, phosphocreatine concentration ([PCr]), and inorganic phosphate concentration ([P(i)]). No differences in exercise performance or the metabolic response to exercise were observed between Ramp and Mod-Ramp. However, compared with Ramp, a 14% (SD 10) increase (P < 0.01) in peak power output (PPO) was observed in Hvy-Ramp. The improved exercise performance in Hvy-Ramp was accompanied by a delayed (P = 0.01) onset of intracellular acidosis [Hvy-Ramp 60.4% PPO (SD 11.7) vs. Ramp 45.8% PPO (SD 9.4)] and a delayed (P < 0.01) onset of rapid increases in [P(i)]/[PCr] [Hvy-Ramp 61.5% PPO (SD 12.0) vs. Ramp 45.1% PPO (SD 9.1)]. In conclusion, prior heavy-intensity exercise delayed the onset of intracellular acidosis and enhanced exercise performance during a subsequent incremental exercise test.  相似文献

[Purpose]

Pine needle is a kind of medicinal plant ingested traditionally for a variety of purposes. Therefore, we examined the antioxidant and antiapoptotic capacities of pine needle ingestion in high cholesterol-fed and endurance exercise-trained rats.

[Methods]

Animals were divided into six groups as; CON: normal diet control group; EX: normal diet and exercise training group; HC: high cholesterol diet group; HCE: high cholesterol diet and exercise training group; HCP: high cholesterol and pine needle group; HCPE: high-cholesterol and pine needle diet with exercise training group, respectively. Each group consisted of seven Sprague-Dawley male rats. The swim-training groups, EX, HCE, and HCPE swam in the swim pool 60 min/d and 5 d/week for 5 weeks. During the rearing periods, freeze-dried pine needle powder mix with 5% of the high cholesterol diet was supplied to the HCP and HCPE groups. Gastrocnemius muscle was used as the skeletal muscle. Malondialdehyde (MDA), Mn-containing superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD), Cu, Zn containing superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn-SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were analyzed for their antioxidant capacities. Finally, p53, Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2), caspase-3 protein expression was analyzed to determine antiapoptotic ability.

[Results]

MDA showed low content in HCPE compared to the HC. Mn-SOD, Cu,Zn-SOD, and GPx protein expression was significantly increased by pine needle ingestion and/or exercise training. In addition, suppression of p53 protein expression resulted in Bcl-2 increase followed by caspase-3 decrease with/without pine needle ingestion and exercise training.

[Conclusion]

When exercise training in addition to pine needle powder ingestion may be a helpful nutritional regimen to athletes and exercisers.  相似文献

Invasive alien plant species threaten agriculture and biodiversity globally and require ongoing management to minimise impacts. However, the large number of invasive species means that a risk‐based approach to prioritisation is needed, taking into account the spatial scale of management decisions and myriad of available information. Here, we developed a risk‐based inventory of invasive plants in Queensland, Australia, using both current species distribution/abundance and the severity of their impacts. Our assessment followed a comprehensive data collection process including a scoping of local government pest management plans, herbarium records, the published literature and structured elicitation of expert knowledge during a series of regional stakeholder workshops. From ~300 plant species that were identified as established and/or emerging invaders in the State, only one‐third were considered by practitioners to pose significant risks across regions to be considered management priorities. We aggregated regional species lists into a statewide priority list and analysed the data set (107 species) for historical, geographical, floristic and ecological patterns. Regions on the mainland eastern seaboard of the State share similar invasive plant communities, suggesting that these regions may form a single management unit, unlike the western/inland and the extreme far north (Torres Strait Islands) regions, which share fewer invasive plant species. Positive correlations were detected between invasiveness and time since introduction for some but not all plant life forms. Stakeholders identified research and management priorities for the invasive plant list, including biological control options, public awareness/education, effective herbicide use, ecology/taxonomy and risk analysis. In the course of the exercise, a statewide invasive plant priority list of high‐, medium‐ and low‐impact scores for policy, research and management was compiled. Finally, our approach to invasive plant species prioritisation highlighted that planning and policy documents are not necessarily reflected at the grass‐root level in terms of species identity and management priorities.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that heavy-exercise phase II oxygen uptake (VO(2)) kinetics could be speeded by prior heavy exercise. Ten subjects performed four protocols involving 6-min exercise bouts on a cycle ergometer separated by 6 min of recovery: 1) moderate followed by moderate exercise; 2) moderate followed by heavy exercise; 3) heavy followed by moderate exercise; and 4) heavy followed by heavy exercise. The VO(2) responses were modeled using two (moderate exercise) or three (heavy exercise) independent exponential terms. Neither moderate- nor heavy-intensity exercise had an effect on the VO(2) kinetic response to subsequent moderate exercise. Although heavy-intensity exercise significantly reduced the mean response time in the second heavy exercise bout (from 65.2 +/- 4.1 to 47.0 +/- 3.1 s; P < 0.05), it had no significant effect on either the amplitude or the time constant (from 23.9 +/- 1.9 to 25.3 +/- 2.9 s) of the VO(2) response in phase II. Instead, this "speeding" was due to a significant reduction in the amplitude of the VO(2) slow component. These results suggest phase II VO(2) kinetics are not speeded by prior heavy exercise.  相似文献

This study compared the fat metabolism between "a single bout of prolonged exercise" and "repeated bouts of exercise" of equivalent exercise intensity and total exercise duration. Seven men performed three trials: 1) a single bout of 60-min exercise (Single); 2) two bouts of 30-min exercise, separated by a 20-min rest between exercise bouts (Repeated); and 3) rest. Each exercise was performed with a cycle ergometer at 60% of maximal oxygen uptake. In the Single and Repeated trials, serum glycerol, growth hormone, plasma epinephrine, and norepinephrine concentrations increased significantly (P<0.05) during the first 30-min exercise bout. In the Repeated trial, serum free fatty acids (FFA), acetoacetate, and 3-hydroxybutyrate concentrations showed rapid increases (P<0.05) during a subsequent 20-min rest period. During the second 30-min exercise bout, FFA and epinephrine responses were significantly greater in the Repeated trial than in the Single trial (P<0.05). Moreover, the Repeated trial showed significantly lower values of insulin and glucose than the Single trial. During the 60-min recovery period after the exercise, FFA, glycerol, and 3-hydroxybutyrate concentrations were significantly higher in the Repeated trial than in the Single trial (P<0.05). The relative contribution of fat oxidation to the energy expenditure showed significantly higher values (P<0.05) in the Repeated trial than in the Single trial during the recovery period. These results indicate that repeated bouts of exercise cause enhanced fat metabolism compared with a single bout of prolonged exercise of equivalent total exercise duration.  相似文献

Exotic plants have been found to use allelochemicals, positive plant–soil feedbacks, and high concentrations of soil nutrients to exercise a competitive advantage over native plants. Under laboratory conditions, activated carbon (AC) has shown the potential to reduce these advantages by sequestering organic compounds. It is not known, however, if AC can effectively sequester organics or reduce exotic plant growth under field conditions. On soils dominated by exotic plants, we found that AC additions (1% AC by mass in the top 10 cm of soil) reduced concentrations of extractable organic C and N and induced consistent changes in plant community composition. The cover of two dominant exotics, Bromus tectorum and Centaurea diffusa, decreased on AC plots compared to that on control plots (14–8% and 4–0.1%, respectively), and the cover of native perennial grasses increased on AC plots compared to that on control plots (1.4–3% cover). Despite promising responses to AC by these species, some exotic species responded positively to AC and some native species responded negatively to AC. Consequently, AC addition did not result in native plant communities similar to uninvaded sites, but AC did demonstrate potential as a soil‐based exotic plant control tool, especially for B. tectorum and C. diffusa.  相似文献
