The growth process of a living organism is studied with the help of a mathematical model where a part of the surplus power is assumed to be used for growth. In the present study, the basic mathematical framework of the growth process is based on a pioneering theory proposed by von Bertalanffy and his work is the main intellectual driving force behind the present analysis. Considering the existence of an optimum size for which the surplus power becomes maximum, it has been found that the scaling exponent for the intake rate must be smaller than the exponent for the metabolic cost. A relationship among the empirical constants in allometric scaling has also been established on the basis of the fact that an organism never ceases to generate surplus energy. The growth process is found to continue forever, although with a decreasing rate. Beyond the optimum point the percentage of shortfall in energy has been calculated and its dependence on scaling exponents has been determined. The dependence of optimum mass on the empirical constants has been shown graphically. The functional dependence of mass variation on time has been obtained by solving a differential equation based on the concept of surplus energy. The dependence of the growth process on scaling exponent and empirical constants has been shown graphically.  相似文献

Bio-inspired climbing robots relying on adhesion systems are believed to become essential tools for several industrial applications in the near future. In recent years, research has mainly focused on modeling micro-scale adhesion phenomena; a macro-scale adhesion model has however to be developed for the design of macro-scale systems. In this paper a macro-model of adhesion suitable for real-time applications is presented; it relies on a continuous representation of adhesion. An extension of the von Mises criterion is proposed as failure adhesion criterion in order to estimate the occurrence of detachment at any point of the contacting surface. An experimental set up has been designed in order to define the parameters of the model. A semi-automatic process has been developed to ensure repeatability and accuracy of the results. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which has revealed promising adhesive features for robotic use, has been used during the experimental phase. The macro-model of adhesion has been implemented in a multi-body dynamics environment based on Open Dynamics Engine (ODE) to simulate a spider-inspired robot. Simulations based on this model are suitable to represent the behaviour of climbing robots and also to optimize their design.  相似文献

Analysis of the fingerprints of 571 members of the Habbanite isolate suggest inherited patterns and pattern sequences. A genetic theory has been developed; it assumes that the basic fingerprint pattern sequence is all ulnar loops and that a variety of genes cause deviations from this pattern sequence. Genes that have been proposed include: (1) a semidominant gene for whorls on the thumbs (one homozygote has whorls on both thumbs, the other has ulnar loops on both thumbs and the heterozygote usually has two ulnar loops or one ulnar loop and one whorl); (2) a semidominant gene for whorls on the ring fingers which acts like the gene for whorls on the thumbs; (3) a dominant gene for arches on the thumbs and often on other fingers; (4) one or more dominant genes for arches on the fingers; (5) a dominant gene for whorls on all fingers except for an ulnar loop on the middle finger; (6) a dominant gene for radial loops on the index fingers, frequently associated with an arch on the middle fingers; and (7) a recessive gene for radial loops on the ring and little fingers. In vitro regeneration techniques have been optimized for seven strains and cultivars of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) bred in Russia. The frequency of shoot regeneration from somatic cells and tissues of sugar beet varies from 10 to 97% depending on the explant type, culture-medium composition, and genotype. The in vitro regeneration potential has been estimated in plants with different genotypes. The effect of medium composition (phytohormones and carbohydrates) on the frequency of the formation of a morphogenic callus competent for plant regeneration has been determined. The effect of the types and concentrations of various cytokines (zeatin, kinetin, and 6-benzylaminopurine) on direct shoot regeneration from cotyledon nodes has been estimated. The culture-medium composition has been optimized for direct shoot regeneration from petioles. The effects of different concentrations of abscisic acid on the frequency of shoot regeneration from a morphogenic callus has been studied. Micropropagation has been used to obtain petiole explants and reproduce the shoots obtained by direct regeneration from cotyledon nodes, petioles, and calluses. Improved shoot-regeneration methods can be used for both agrobacterial and bioballistic genetic transformation of the sugar beet genotypes studied.  相似文献

氮沉降增加对森林凋落物分解酶产生的影响在世界范围受到关注。综述了凋落物分解酶的种类、影响酶的因素、酶的生态学意义和土壤酶研究技术的研究发展趋势。根据森林凋落物底物性质的不同,将凋落物分解酶分为纤维素分解酶类、木质素分解酶类、蛋白水解酶类和磷酸酶类。目前普遍认为,氮沉降增加,磷酸酶类活性随之增加,其它三类酶活性未呈现规律性变化。此外,还对氮沉降增加与土壤酶之间关系的研究前景进行了探讨。  相似文献

A phosphohydrolase with a preferential activity for GTP has been isolated and partially purified from E. coli extracts. The enzyme purification has been achieved through precipitation by ammonium sulfate and chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, DEAE-Sephadex, Ultragel and a second DEAE-cellulose column. The phosphohydrolase activity is poly (C) dependent. The chromatographic analysis on PEI-cellulose has shown that the main product of GTP hydrolysis is GDP. The possibility that the enzyme partially purified in this work has an important role in the control of GTP availability as substrate for guanylate cyclase into the cells has been discussed.  相似文献

A model for the redox regulation of the functional state of the cell has been constructed on the basis of representation of electron transfer processes by equivalent electric circuits. The mechanism of action of redox-active molecules on biosystems has been discussed in terms of circuit theory. A method for determining the parameters of cellular redox sensors has been proposed. It has been established that the concentration and redox potential of compounds entering the cell are the main regulatory parameters of redox signals for the cell. It has been experimentally shown that the calcium response to hydrogen peroxide in rat C6 glioma cells and human FL amnion cells depends on the redox-buffer capacity of cells.  相似文献

A library of monoclonal antibodies raised against partially purified membrane fractions from Xenopus laevis oocytes has been produced. One of these antibodies has been cloned and characterized in detail. It was found to be specific for a membrane-bound antigen of apparent Mr, 55,000. The distribution of the antigen has been studied by indirect immunofluorescence on sections of X. laevis embryos and has been found to be highly specific for some ectodermal and endodermal tissues. A physical map of Neurospora crassa mitochondrial DNA has been constructed using specific fragments obtained with restriction endonucleases. The DNA has 5 cleavage sites for endonuclease Bam HI, 12 for endonuclease Eco RI and more than 30 for endonuclease Hind III. The sequence of the Eco RI and Bam HI fragments has been established by analysis of partial fragments. By digestion of the Eco RI fragments with Bam HI, a complete overlapping map has been constructed. The position of the largest Hind III fragment on this map has also been determined. The map is circular and the added molecular weight of the fragments is 40 - 10(6), which is in good agreement with earlier measurements on intact DNA, using the electron microscope.  相似文献

Linking soil process and microbial ecology in freshwater wetland ecosystems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Soil microorganisms mediate many processes such as nitrification, denitrification, and methanogenesis that regulate ecosystem functioning and also feed back to influence atmospheric chemistry. These processes are of particular interest in freshwater wetland ecosystems where nutrient cycling is highly responsive to fluctuating hydrology and nutrients and soil gas releases may be sensitive to climate warming. In this review we briefly summarize research from process and taxonomic approaches to the study of wetland biogeochemistry and microbial ecology, and highlight areas where further research is needed to increase our mechanistic understanding of wetland system functioning. Research in wetland biogeochemistry has most often been focused on processes (e.g., methanogenesis), and less often on microbial communities or on populations of specific microorganisms of interest. Research on process has focused on controls over, and rates of, denitrification, methanogenesis, and methanotrophy. There has been some work on sulfate and iron transformations and wetland enzyme activities. Work to date indicates an important process level role for hydrology and soil nutrient status. The impact of plant species composition on processes is potentially critical, but is as yet poorly understood. Research on microbial communities in wetland soils has primarily focused on bacteria responsible for methanogenesis, denitrification, and sulfate reduction. There has been less work on taxonomic groups such as those responsible for nitrogen fixation, or aerobic processes such as nitrification. Work on general community composition and on wetland mycorrhizal fungi is particularly sparse. The general goal of microbial research has been to understand how microbial groups respond to the environment. There has been relatively little work done on the interactions among environmental controls over process rates, environmental constraints on microbial activities and community composition, and changes in processes at the ecosystem level. Finding ways to link process-based and biochemical or gene-based assays is becoming increasingly important as we seek a mechanistic understanding of the response of wetland ecosystems to current and future anthropogenic perturbations. We discuss the potential of new approaches, and highlight areas for further research.  相似文献

A test based on ordered observations for selection of consistent judges for sensory evaluation has been given. The test–statistic depends on the sum of ranks of different products under consideration. The probability distribution of the test-statistic has been worked out for small sample and it turns out to be chi-square distribution for large sample. The renaissance of interest in sexual selection during the last decades has fuelled an extraordinary increase of scientific papers on the subject in spiders. Research has focused both on the process of sexual selection itself, for example on the signals and various modalities involved, and on the patterns, that is the outcome of mate choice and competition depending on certain parameters. Sexual selection has most clearly been demonstrated in cases involving visual and acoustical signals but most spiders are myopic and mute, relying rather on vibrations, chemical and tactile stimuli. This review argues that research has been biased towards modalities that are relatively easily accessible to the human observer. Circumstantial and comparative evidence indicates that sexual selection working via substrate-borne vibrations and tactile as well as chemical stimuli may be common and widespread in spiders. Pattern-oriented research has focused on several phenomena for which spiders offer excellent model objects, like sexual size dimorphism, nuptial feeding, sexual cannibalism, and sperm competition. The accumulating evidence argues for a highly complex set of explanations for seemingly uniform patterns like size dimorphism and sexual cannibalism. Sexual selection appears involved as well as natural selection and mechanisms that are adaptive in other contexts only. Sperm competition has resulted in a plethora of morphological and behavioural adaptations, and simplistic models like those linking reproductive morphology with behaviour and sperm priority patterns in a straightforward way are being replaced by complex models involving an array of parameters. Male mating costs are increasingly being documented in spiders, and sexual selection by male mate choice is discussed as a potential result. Research on sexual selection in spiders has come a long way since Darwin, whose spider examples are reanalysed in the context of contemporary knowledge, but the same biases and methodological constraints have persisted almost unchanged through the current boom of research.  相似文献

Wood is one of the major renewable materials. To compensate for the ever-increasing demand for wood and to reduce pressure on native forests, more wood of higher quality will need to be produced on less land by planting highly productive trees. Biotechnology has shown great promise for forest tree improvement and over the past 10 years this field has flourished. Not only has the potential of transgenic trees with optimized yield and quality traits been demonstrated in field trials, but progress in genetical genomics and association genetics promise quantum leaps forward for tree improvement.  相似文献

An immunosorbent with Salmonella typhimurium 1021 O-antigen has been obtained on the basis of polymer-modified porous glass. Binding has been effected due to the presence of NH2-groups on the carrier and aldehyde groupings on O-antigen previously oxidized with sodium periodate. Specific anti-O-4 antibodies have been isolated with the use of this immunosorbent, and on the basis of these antibodies peroxidase conjugates have been obtained. This preparation has made it possible to establish the parameters of EIA for the detection of Salmonella O-4 antigens in the assay involving the use of the sandwich technique. The method has proved to be sufficiently simple, sensitive and specific. It is recommended for the detection of Salmonella O-4 antigen in biological fluids.  相似文献

DNA structure of the temperate bacteriophage E105 from polylysogenic culture of Erwinia carotovora 268 has been studied. The viral 29.12-29.17 MD DNA has been shown to be linear and nonpermuted. The complete restriction map of the viral DNA has been constructed for MvaI and HpaI and partial for Eco31 restriction endonucleases based on the pair hydrolysis of the native DNA as well as its fragments. Altogether, 19 sites for restriction endonucleases have been localized on bacteriophage DNA.  相似文献

The fragile X mental retardation (FXMR) syndrome is one of the most frequent causes of mental retardation. Affected individuals display a wide range of additional characteristic features including behavioural and physical phenotypes, and the extent to which individuals are affected is highly variable. For these reasons, elucidation of the pathophysiology of this disease has been an important challenge to the scientific community. 1991 marks the year of the discovery of both the FMR1 gene mutations involved in this disease, and of their dynamic nature. Although a mouse model for the disease has been available for 16 years and extensive research has been performed on the FMR1 protein (FMRP), we still understand little about how the disease develops, and no treatment has yet been shown to be effective. In this review, we summarise current knowledge on FXMR with an emphasis on the technical challenges of molecular diagnostics, on its prevalence and dynamics among populations, and on the potential of screening for FMR1 mutations.  相似文献

This annual review focuses on invertebrate model organisms, which shed light on new mechanisms in aging and provide excellent systems for in-depth analysis. This year, the first quantitative estimate of evolutionary conservation of genetic effects on lifespan has pointed to the key importance of genes involved in protein synthesis, a finding confirmed and extended by experimental work. Work in Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila has highlighted the importance of phase 2 detoxification in extension of lifespan by reduced insulin/Igf-like signalling. Thorough characterization of systems for dietary restriction in C. elegans is starting to show differences in the mechanisms by which these interventions extend lifespan and has revealed a requirement for autophagy. The response to heat shock in C. elegans turns out to be systemic, and mediated by sensory neurons, with potentially interesting implications for the response of lifespan to temperature. Work in Escherichia coli and yeast has revealed a role for retention of aggregated proteins in the parent in the rejuvenation of offspring while, as in C. elegans, removal of the germ line in Drosophila turns out to extend lifespan. Aging research has suffered the loss of a great scientific leader, Seymour Benzer, and his trail-blazing work on aging and neurodegeneration is highlighted.  相似文献

Cladistic methodology has become common in phylogenetic analyses of the hominid fossil record. Even though it has correctly placed emphasis on morphology for the primary determination of affinities between groups and on explicit statements regarding traits and methods employed in making phylogenetic assessments, cladistics nonetheless has limitations when applied to the hominid fossil record. These include 1) the uncritical assumption of parsimony, 2) uncertainties in the identification of homoplasies, 3) difficulties in the appropriate delimitation of samples for analysis, 4) failure to account for normal patterns of variation, 5) methodological problems with the appropriate identification of morphological traits involving issues of biological relevance, intercorrelation, primary versus secondary characters, and the use of continuous variables, 6) issues of polarity identification, and 7) problems in hypothesis testing. While cladistics has focused attention on alternative phylogenetic reconstructions in hominid paleontology and on explicit statements regarding their morphological and methodological underpinnings, its biological limitations are too abundant for it to be more than a heuristic device for the preliminary ordering of complex human paleontological and neonatological data.  相似文献
