Authors and scholars published within Arts Education Policy Review have been diligent to investigate various topics surrounding music educator preparation, mentoring, retention, as well as avenues for continued professional development and growth. Linda Darling-Hammond and Robert Rothman, along with various chapter authors, address education reform on an international level within Teaching in the Flat World: Learning from High-Performing Systems (2015). The purpose of this article is to examine the recommendations presented by Darling-Hammond, Rothman, and colleagues through the lens of music education research and policy review. Specific areas of focus include: (a) recruitment and rigor of teacher education programs, (b) alternative routes into the teaching profession, (c) teacher induction and new teacher support, (d) career advancement and professional development support, and (e) teacher evaluation. 相似文献

The preparation of novice teachers is dominated by psychological notions almost to the exclusion of other social science paradigms. The perspective that is least likely to be evident in teacher preparation is that of anthropology. However, prospective and novice teachers regularly and loosely use the word "culture" as an explanation for student patterns of behavior they cannot explain. The mathematics in school biology is investigated by means of an analysis of the questions in examination papers set over a period of time in biological subjects by the University of London Examinations Board. Throughout, the incidence of questions requiring mathematics changes but remains low, while the range of mathematics topics called upon remains both restricted and unchanging. However, the various biological examination subjects differ markedly with respect both to the changes in the incidence of such questions and to the range and frequency with which the topics are used. Certain difficulties associated with the mathematics of school biology are identified, and biology teachers are encouraged to discuss these with their colleagues who teach mathematics. 相似文献

The article reevaluates the reception of Mendelism in France, and more generally considers the complex relationship between Mendelism and plant breeding in the first half on the 20th century. It shows on the one side that agricultural research and higher education institutions have played a key role in the development and institutionalization of genetics in France, whereas university biologists remained reluctant to accept this approach on heredity. But on the other side, plant breeders, and agricultural researchers, despite an interest in Mendelism, never came to see it as the breeders’ panacea, and regarded it instead as of only limited value for plant breeding. I account for this judgment in showing that the plant breeders and Mendelism designed two contrasting kinds of experimental systems and inhabited distinct experimental cultures. While Mendelian geneticists designed experimental systems that allowed the production of definite ratios of different forms that varied in relation to a few characters, plant breeders’ experimental systems produced a wide range of variation, featuring combinations between hundreds of traits. Rather than breaking this multiple variation down into simple elements, breeders designed and monitored a genetic lottery. The gene was a unit in a Mendelian experimental culture, an “epistemic thing” as Rheinberger put it, that could be grasped by means of statistical regularities, but it remained of secondary importance for French plant breeders, for whom the strain or the variety – not the gene – was the fundamental unit of analysis and manipulation. 相似文献

A survey was conducted from February to June of 1997 among livestock herders in two villages of Niger, Kodey and Toukounous, on their perceptions, practice, and problems of night grazing. Cattle and sheep were the species that were taken out for night grazing by the herders. Small herd size and labor constraints were mentioned as the principal reasons for not practicing night grazing. Major benefits of night grazing included good body condition, herd growth, increased milk production, prevention of diseases, and reduction in herd mortality. Insecurity, difficulty in staying awake at night, labor constraints, and damage to crops by animals were given as problems of night grazing. According to the herders, grazing time (duration) during the day and night was shorter in the wet season than in the dry season. In the wet season animals were herded (followed and closely supervised by herders), whereas in the dry season, animals were mostly left to range freely in both villages. In general, children herded the animals during the day, while adults were responsible for night-time herding. Herders' perceptions on night grazing as regards animal production parameters such as weight development, water consumption, fecal output and feeding behavior are consistent with available experimental results. Therefore, future technical research needs to recognize the constraints faced by herders and determine how to overcome them to improve technical and economic efficiency. 相似文献

The following critical ethnography interrogates what it means for urban students to learn in multicultural ways, given the oppressive historical and present contexts of their newly desegregated urban district. By retelling events that occurred in the district and the classroom, I present a picture of urban students who are willing to learn and engage in classroom activities when the activities do not threaten their emotional safety. Although their actions are understandable, the students' conscious decisions to disengage from school stifles learning opportunities that would allow them to empathize and connect with other students as a move toward individual and group empowerment. Using critical race theory, I problematize the possibilities for successful multicultural classrooms in urban districts with complex legacies of injustice and racial hostility. 相似文献

PHAs (polyhydroxyalkanoates = biopolyester) composed of hydroxy fatty acids represent a rather complex class of storage polymers
synthesized by various bacteria and archaea and are deposited as water-insoluble cytoplasmic nano-sized inclusions. These
spherical particles are composed of a polyester core surrounded by phospholipids and proteins. The key enzymes of polyester
biosynthesis and polyester particle formation are the polyester synthases, which catalyze the formation of polyesters. Various
metabolic routes have been identified and established in bacteria to provide substrate for polyester synthases. Although not
essential for particle formation, non-covalently attached proteins, the so-called phasins, can be found at the particle surface
and are considered as structural proteins. Protein engineering of polyester synthases and phasins was used to shed light into
the topology of these granule attached proteins. Biopolyesters and the respective micro-/nano-structures are currently considered
as biocompatible and biodegradable biomaterials with numerous potential applications particularly in the medical field.

The beanbag genetics controversy can be traced from the dispute between Fisher and Wright, through Mayr's influential promotion of the issue, to the contemporary units of selection debate. It centers on the claim that genic models of natural selection break down in the face of epistatic interactions among genes during phenotypic development. This claim is explored from both a conceptual and a quantitative point of view, and is shown to be defective on both counts.Firstly, an analysis of the controversy's theoretical origins demonstrates that this claim derives from a misinterpretation of the conceptual foundations of Fisher's genetical theory of natural selection, and confounds his fundamentally different concepts of the average excess and average effect of a gene. Secondly, an extension of the genic approach is proposed which models the dynamics of selection among epistatically interacting complexes of many genes. Paradoxically, this preliminary, but fundamentally genic model provides quantitative support for some controversial qualitative claims regarding the evolutionary consequences of strong gene interactions made by opponents of genic selectionism, including Mayr's theory of peripartric speciation. These findings foster hope that the proposed approach may eventually nudge the beanbag controversy out of its conceptual trenches into a more empirically oriented dialogue. 相似文献

Generating reliable initial models is a critical step in the reconstruction of asymmetric single-particles by 3D electron microscopy. This is particularly difficult to do if heterogeneity is present in the sample. The Random Conical Tilt (RCT) method, arguably the most robust presently to accomplish this task, requires significant user intervention to solve the "missing cone" problem. We present here a novel approach, termed the orthogonal tilt reconstruction method, that eliminates the missing cone altogether, making it possible for single-class volumes to be used directly as initial references in refinement without further processing. The method involves collecting data at +45 degrees and -45 degrees tilts and only requires that particles adopt a relatively large number of orientations on the grid. One tilted data set is used for alignment and classification and the other set--which provides views orthogonal to those in the first--is used for reconstruction, resulting in the absence of a missing cone. We have tested this method with synthetic data and compared its performance to that of the RCT method. We also propose a way of increasing the level of homogeneity in individual 2D classes (and volumes) in a heterogeneous data set and identifying the most homogeneous volumes. 相似文献

Genotypic variation among infective juveniles of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (strain HP88) in heat, desiccation, ultraviolet tolerance, and host-finding ability was assessed by comparing the performance of inbred lines of this entomopathogenic nematode in laboratory assays. Each line consisted of highly homozygous offspring originating from one individual obtained from a natural population. Considerable variation in all four traits was detected among the different inbred lines. The heritability values for heat or ultraviolet tolerance and for host-finding ability were high, indicating that selection should be an efficient way for improving these traits in the population. The results for desiccation tolerance varied considerably within each line. Heritability value was low, indicating that the results were influenced mainly by environmental variation and suggesting that selective breeding for higher desiccation tolerance would be inefficient. Improvement through induction of mutations may be a better alternative in this population. 相似文献
