Summary Different response patterns in net photosynthesis (A) leaf conductance (g) and water use efficiency (WUE= a/transpiration) in three subalpine plants occurred during experimental sun/shade transitions that simulated natural cloudcover. In Frasera speciosa Dougl., a large-leaved herb characteristic of open sites, g was relatively insensitive to transitions in irradiance and variations in A. However, large decreases in leaf temperature resulted in reduced transpiration during shade intervals and relatively constant WUE throughout the experimental sun/shade regime. In the understory herb, Arnica cordifolia Hook., patterns of A and g were similar during sun/shade transitions, but WUE was substantially reduced compared to steady-state levels. A third, somewhat intermediate pattern of A, g, and WUE was found in Artemisia tridentata L., an open site shrub. Higher intercellular CO2 values in A. tridentata suggested that internal, cellular limitations to A were high relative to stomatal limitations in this shrub when compared to the herbaceous species.  相似文献

Spatial and daily variation in photosynthetic water-use efficiency was examined in leaves of Betula pendula Roth with respect to distribution of hydraulic conductance within the crown, morphological properties of stomata, and water availability. Intrinsic water-use efficiency (A n/g s) was determined from gas-exchange measurements performed both in situ in a natural forest stand and on detached shoots under laboratory conditions. In intact foliage, sun leaves demonstrated significantly higher (P < 0.001) A n/g s than shade leaves, as photosynthesis in the lower canopy was chronically limited by low light availability. However, this difference reversed in the mid-day period under sufficient irradiance (I > 800 μmol m−2 s−1): A n/g s averaged 28.8 and 24.0 μmol mol−1 (P < 0.01) for shade and sun leaves, respectively. This last finding coincided with the data obtained in laboratory conditions: under equivalent leaf water supply and light, A n/g s in shade foliage was greater (P < 0.001) than in sun foliage across a wide range of irradiance. Thus, shade foliage of B. pendula is characterized by inherently higher A n/g s than sun foliage, associated with more conservative stomatal behavior, and lower soil-to-leaf (K T) and leaf hydraulic conductances. Under unlimited light conditions, a within-crown trade-off between A n/g s and K T becomes apparent. Differences in stomatal conductance between the detached shoots from sunlit and shaded canopy layers were largely attributable to the variation in stomatal morphology; significant relationships were established with characteristics combining stomatal size and density (relative stomatal surface, stomatal pore area index). Stomatal morphology is very likely involved in long-term adjustment of photosynthetic WUE.  相似文献

Light gradients within tree canopies play a major role in the distribution of plant resources that define the photosynthetic capacity of sun and shade leaves. However, the biochemical and diffusional constraints on gas exchange in sun and shade leaves in response to light remain poorly quantified, but critical for predicting canopy carbon and water exchange. To investigate the CO2 diffusion pathway of sun and shade leaves, leaf gas exchange was coupled with concurrent measurements of carbon isotope discrimination to measure net leaf photosynthesis (An), stomatal conductance (gs) and mesophyll conductance (gm) in Eucalyptus tereticornis trees grown in climate controlled whole‐tree chambers. Compared to sun leaves, shade leaves had lower An, gm, leaf nitrogen and photosynthetic capacity (Amax) but gs was similar. When light intensity was temporarily increased for shade leaves to match that of sun leaves, both gs and gm increased, and An increased to values greater than sun leaves. We show that dynamic physiological responses of shade leaves to altered light environments have implications for up‐scaling leaf level measurements and predicting whole canopy carbon gain. Despite exhibiting reduced photosynthetic capacity, the rapid up‐regulation of gm with increased light enables shade leaves to respond quickly to sunflecks.  相似文献

A whole-plant carbon balance model incorporating a light acclimation response was developed for Alocasia macrorrhiza based on empirical data and the current understanding of light acclimation in this species. The model was used to predict the relative growth rate (RGR) for plants that acclimated to photon flux density (PFD) by changing their leaf type, and for plants that produced only sun or shade leaves regardless of PFD. The predicted RGR was substantially higher for plants with shade leaves than for those with sun leaves at low PFD. However, the predicted RGR was not higher, and in fact was slightly lower, for plants with sun leaves than for those with shade leaves at high PFD. The decreased leaf area ratios (LARs) of the plants with sun leaves counteracted their higher photosynthetic capacities per unit leaf area (Amax). The model was manipulated by changing parameters to examine the sensitivity of RGR to variation in single factors. Overall, RGR was most sensitive to LAR and showed relatively little sensitivity to variation in Amax or maintenance respiration. Similarly, RGR was relatively insensitive to increases in leaf life-span beyond those observed. Respiration affected RGR only at low PFD, whereas Amax was moderately important only at high PFD.  相似文献

The susceptibility to photoinhibition of tree species from three different successional stages were examined using chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange techniques. The three deciduous broadleaf tree species were Betula platyphylla var. japonica, pioneer and early successional, Quercus mongolica, intermediate shade‐tolerant and mid‐successional, and Acer mono, shade‐tolerant and late successional. Tree seedlings were raised under three light regimes: full sunlight (open), 10% full sun, and 5% full sun. Susceptibility to photoinhibition was assessed on the basis of the recovery kinetics of the ratio of vaviable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) of detached leaf discs exposed to about 2000 μmol m?1 s?1 photon flux density (PFD) for 2 h under controlled conditions (25 to 28 °C, fully hydrated). Differences in susceptibility to photodamage among species were not significant in the open and 10% full sun treatments. But in 5% full sun, B. platyphylla sustained a significantly greater photodamage than other species, probably associated with having the lowest photosynthetic capacity indicated by light‐saturated photosynthetic rate (B. platyphylla, 9·87, 5·85 and 2·82; Q. mongolica, 8·05, 6·28 and 4·41; A. mono, 7·93, 6·11 and 5·08 μmol CO2 m?1 s?1for open, 10% and 5% full sun, respectively). To simulate a gap formation and assess its complex effects including high temperature and water stress in addition to strong light on the susceptibility to photoinhibition, we examined photoinhibition in the field by means of monitoring ΔF/Fm on the first day of transfer to natural daylight. Compared with ΔF/Fm in AM, the lower ΔF/Fm in PM responding to lower PFD following high PFD around noon indicated that photoinhibition occurred in plants grown in 10 and 5% full sun. The diurnal changes of ΔF/Fm showed that Q. mongolica grown in 5% full sun was less susceptible to photoinhibition than A. mono although they showed little differences both in photosynthetic capacity in intact leaves and susceptibility to photoinhibition based on leaf disc measurements. These results suggest that shade‐grown Q. mongolica had a higher tolerance for additional stresses such as high temperature and water stress in the field, possibly due to their lower plasticity in leaf anatomy to low light environment.  相似文献

The functional roles of the contrasting morphologies of sun and shade shoots of the evergreen shrub Heteromeles arbutifolia were investigated in chaparral and understory habitats by applying a three-dimensional plant architecture simulation model, YPLANT. The simulations were shown to accurately predict the measured frequency distribution of photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD) on both the leaves and a horizontal surface in the open, and gave reasonably good agreement for the more complex light environment in the shade. The sun shoot architecture was orthotropic and characterized by steeply inclined (mean = 71o) leaves in a spiral phyllotaxy with short internodes. This architecture resulted in relatively low light absorption efficiencies (E A) for both diffuse and direct PFD, especially during the summer when solar elevation angles were high. Shade shoots were more plagiotropic with longer internodes and a pseudo-distichous phyllotaxis caused by bending of the petioles that positioned the leaves in a nearly horizontal plane (mean = 5o). This shade-shoot architecture resulted in higher E A values for both direct and diffuse PFD as compared to those of the sun shoots. Differences in E A between sun and shade shoots and between summer and winter were related to differences in projection efficiencies as determined by leaf and solar angles, and by differences in self shading resulting from leaf overlap. The leaves exhibited photosynthetic acclimation to the sun and the shade, with the sun leaves having higher photosynthetic capacities per unit area, higher leaf mass per unit area and lower respiration rates per unit area than shade leaves. Despite having 7 times greater available PFD, sun shoots absorbed only 3 times more and had daily carbon gains only double of those of shade shoots. Simulations showed that sun and shade plants performed similarly in the open light environment, but that shade shoots substantially outperformed sun shoots in the shade light environment. The shoot architecture observed in sun plants appears to achieve an efficient compromise between maximizing carbon gain while minimizing the time that the leaf surfaces are exposed to PFDs in excess of those required for light saturation of photosynthesis and therefore potentially photoinhibitory. The effects of shade on the gas exchange of four Hosta cultivars were determined under differing irradiances (5, 30, 50, and 100 % of full irradiance) within pots. Irradiance saturation ranged between 400–800 mol m–2 s–1 among the four cultivars, of which H. sieboldiana cv. Elegans and H. plantagenea cv. Aphrodite exerted the lowest saturation and compensation irradiances. The maximal photosynthetic rate (P max) was significantly higher in shade than in full irradiance in Elegans and Aphrodite, and was at maximum in seedlings grown in 30 % of full irradiance. The best shade treatment for cvs. Antioch and Golden Edger was 50 % of full irradiance. The diurnal gas exchange patterns in four cultivars were greatly influenced by the irradiance. Single-peak patterns of net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) were observed under 5 and 30 % full irradiance for all the cultivars while Elegans and Aphrodite suffered from midday depression in 50 % of full irradiance. Under open sky, all four cultivars showed two-peak patters in their diurnal gas exchange, but the midday depression was less in Antioch and Golden Edger than in Elegans and Aphrodite. According to their photosynthetic responses to shade, the shade tolerance of the four cultivars was in the order: Elegans>Aphrodite>Antioch>Golden Edger.  相似文献

Taro and cocoyam were grown outdoors in either full sun or under 40% shade. Leaves were tagged as they emerged and the effect of leaf age on net CO2 assimilation rate (A) was determined. The effects of shading on A, transpiration (E), stomatal conductance for CO2 (gc) and H2O (gs), and water use efficiency (WUE) were also determined for leaves of a single age for each species. The effect of leaf age on A was similar for both species. Net CO2 assimilation rates increased as leaf age increased up to 28 days with the exception of a sharp decline in A for 21 day-old leaves which corresponded to unusually low temperatures during the period of leaf expansion. A generally decreased as leaves aged beyond 28 days. Cocoyam had higher A rates than taro. Leaves of shade-grown plants had higher rates of A and E for both species at photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD) up to 1600 mol s–1 m–2. Shade-grown leaves of cocoyam had greater leaf dry weights per area (LW/A) and a trend toward higher gc and gs than sun-grown leaves. Shade leaves of taro had greater gc and g3 rates than sun-grown leaves. The data suggest that taro and cocoyam are highly adapted to moderate shade conditions.  相似文献

Summary Shade needles of hybrid larch (Larix decidua × leptolepis) had the same rates of photosynthesis as sun needles per dry weight and nitrogen, and a similar leaf conductance under conditions of light saturation at ambient CO2 (Amax). However, on an area basis, Amax and specific leaf weight were lower in shade than in sun needles. Stomata of sun needles limited CO2 uptake at light saturation by about 20%, but under natural conditions of light in the shade crown, shade needles operated in a range of saturating internal CO2 without stomatal limitation of CO2 uptake. In both needle types, stomata responded similarly to changes in light, but shade needles were more sensitive to changes in vapor pressure deficit than sun needles. Despite a high photosynthetic capacity, the ambient light conditions reduced the mean daily (in summer) and annual carbon gain of shade needles to less than 50% of that in sun needles. In sun needles, the transpiration per carbon gain was about 220 mol mol–1 on an annual basis. The carbon budget of branches was determined from the photosynthetic rate, the needle biomass and respiration, the latter of which was (per growth and on a carbon basis) 1.6 mol mol–1 year–1 in branch and stem wood. In shade branches carbon gains exceeded carbon costs (growth + respiration) by only a factor of 1.6 compared with 3.5 in sun branches. The carbon balance of sun branches was 5 times higher per needle biomass of a branch or 9 times higher on a branch length basis than shade branches. The shade foliage (including the shaded near-stem sun foliage) only contributed approximately 23% to the total annual carbon gain of the tree.  相似文献

The seasonal trends in water use efficiency of sun and shade leaves of mature oak (Quercus robur) and sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) trees were assessed in the upper canopy of an English woodland. Intrinsic water use efficiency (net CO2 assimilation rate/leaf conductance, A/g) was measured by gas exchange and inferred from C isotope discrimination (δ13C) methods. Shade leaves had consistently lower δ13C than sun leaves (by 1–2‰), the difference being larger in sycamore. Buds had distinct sun and shade isotopic signatures before bud break and received an influx of 13C-rich C before becoming net autotrophs. After leaf full expansion, δ13C declined by 1–2‰ gradually through the season, emphasising the importance of imported carbon in the interpretation of leaf δ13C values in perennial species. There was no significant difference between the two species in the value of intrinsic water use efficiency for either sun or shade leaves. For sun leaves, season-long A/g calculated from δ13C (72–78 μmol CO2 [mol H2O]−1) was 10–16% higher than that obtained from gas exchange and in situ estimates of leaf boundary layer conductance. For shade leaves, the gas exchange–derived values were low, only 10–18% of the δ13C-derived values. This is ascribed to difficulties in obtaining a comprehensive sample of gas exchange measurements in the rapidly changing light environment.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted with Heliocarpus appendiculatus, a pioneer or large gap species of tropical moist forest in Costa Rica, and Dipteryx panamensis, a small gap species. Seedlings were grown in full sun, partial (80%) shade, and full (98%) shade. After one month of growth they were switched between environments and grown for two more months. Growth in height of Heliocarpus was greatly affected by irradiance, being increased in response to full shade and decreased in full sun. Height of Dipteryx was unaffected by irradiance level. Survival of Heliocarpus seedlings was only 49% in full shade, whereas Dipteryx had 100% survival. Biomass of Heliocarpus was not significantly greater in full sun than in partial shade whereas it was for Dipteryx. The response of root: shoot ratio was similar for both species. They were lowest in full shade and highest in full sun. Heliocarpus exhibited greater changes in leaf thickness, specific leaf weight, and stomatal density than did Dipteryx. Stomatal conductance of both species was lower in full shade and full sun than in partial shade. The results of the experiment indicate that growth of Heliocarpus is more plastic than that of Dipteryx in response to changes in irradiance. Previous environment did not affect the response to the present environment in either species. Both species responded positively to increases in irradiance.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity in response to light in the coffee tree   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Phenotypic plasticity to light availability was examined at the leaf level in field-grown coffee trees (Coffea arabica). This species has been traditionally considered as shade-demanding, although it performs well without shade and even out-yields shaded coffee. Specifically, we focused our attention on the morpho-anatomical plasticity, the balance between light capture and excess light energy dissipation, as well as on physiological traits associated with carbon gain. A wide natural light gradient, i.e., a diurnal intercepted photon irradiance differing by a factor of 25 between the deepest shade leaves and the more exposed leaves in the canopy, was explored. Responses of most traits to light were non-linear, revealing the classic leaf sun vs. leaf shade dichotomy (e.g., compared with sun leaves, shade leaves had a lower stomatal density, a thinner palisade mesophyll, a higher specific leaf area, an improved light capture, a lower respiration rate, a lower light compensating point and a limited capacity for photoprotection). The light-saturated rates of net photosynthesis were higher in sunlit than in shade leaves, although sun leaves were not efficient enough to use the extra light supply. However, sun leaves showed well-developed photoprotection mechanisms in comparison to shade leaves, which proved sufficient for avoiding photoinhibition. Specifically, a higher non-photochemical quenching coefficient was found in parallel to increases in: (i) zeaxanthin pools, (ii) de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle, and (iii) activities of some antioxidant enzymes. Intracanopy plasticity depended on the suite of traits considered, and was high for some physiological traits associated with photoprotection and maintenance of a positive carbon balance under low light, but low for most morpho-anatomical features. Our data largely explain the successful cultivation of the coffee tree in both exposed and shade environments, although with a poor resource-use efficiency in high light.  相似文献

Colonization of roots and soil by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi sometimes promotes stomatal conductance (g s) of the host plant, but scientists have had difficulty predicting or manipulating the response. Our objective was to test whether the magnitude of AM influence on g s is related to environmental conditions: irradiance, air temperature or leaf temperature. Stomatal conductances of two groups of uncolonized sorghum plants were compared to g s of plants colonized by Glomus intraradices (Gi) or Gigaspora margarita (Gm) in 31 morning and afternoon periods under naturally varying greenhouse conditions. Stomatal conductance of Gi and Gm plants was often markedly higher than g s of similarly sized nonAM plants. AM promotion of g s was minimal at the lowest irradiances and lowest air and leaf temperatures, but was substantial at intermediate irradiance and temperatures. AM promotion was again low or absent at the highest irradiances and temperatures. Magnitude of AM promotion of g s was not a function of absolute g s. Promotion of g s by Gi and Gm was remarkably similar. Differing phosphorus fertilization did not affect g s.  相似文献

Diurnal cycle of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters was done in Colocasia esculenta L. (swamp taro) grown in marshy land under sun or under shade. The sun leaves maintained higher electron transport rate (ETR) and steady state to initial fluorescence ratio (Fs/F0) than shade leaves. In spite of lower ETR, higher photochemical quenching (PQ), and effective quantum yield of photosystem 2 (ΦPS2) was evident in shade plants compared to plants exposed to higher irradiance. ETR increased linearly with increase in irradiance more under low irradiance (r 2 = 0.84) compared to higher irradiance (r 2 = 0.62). The maximum quantum yield of PS 2 (Fv/Fm) did not differ much in sun and shade leaves with the exception of midday when excess of light energy absorbed by plants under sun was thermally dissipated. Hence swamp taro plants adopted different strategies to utilize radiation under different irradiances. At higher irradiance, there was faster decline in proportion of open PS 2 centers (PQ) and excess light energy was dissipated through non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). Under shade, absorbed energy was effectively utilized resulting in higher ΦPS2.  相似文献

Summary Photosynthetic acclimation to 5 light environments ranging from 2 to 60% full sun was determined in Alocasia macrorrhiza, a shade tolerant species from tropical forest understories, and Colocasia esculenta, a cultivated species which occurs naturally in open marshy areas. Photosynthetic capacities of both species increased nearly 3 fold with increased photon flux density (PFD). In a given environment, however, photosynthetic capacities of C. esculenta were double those of A. macrorrhiza. Stomatal limitations explained only a small part of this difference. Respiration rates and estimated biochemical capacities increased in parallel to photosynthetic capacity. No differences were observed either between species or environments in the ratio of RuBP regeneration capacity to carboxylation capacity as determined from the CO2 dependence response of photosynthesis. Quantum yields of both species decreased only slightly with increasing growth PFD, providing little evidence for photoinhibition at high PFD. The results are discussed in terms of the mechanisms of and limitations on acclimation in these two species.  相似文献

Sun and shade leaves of several plant species from a neotropical forest were exposed to excessive light to evaluate the responses of photosystem I in comparison to those of photosystem II. Potential photosystem I activity was determined by means of the maximum P700 absorbance change around 810 nm (ΔA810max) in saturating far-red light. Leaf absorbance changes in dependence of increasing far-red light fluence rates were used to calculate a ‘saturation constant’, Ks, representing the far-red irradiance at which half of the maximal absorbance change (ΔA810max/2) was reached in the steady state. Photosystem II efficiency was assessed by measuring the ratio of variable to maximum chlorophyll fluorescence, Fv/Fm, in dark-adapted leaf samples. Strong illumination caused a high degree of photo-inhibition of photosystem II in all leaves, particularly in shade leaves. Exposure to 1800–2000 μ mol photons m2 s1 for 75 min did not substantially affect the potential activity of photosystem I in all species tested, but caused a more than 40-fold increase of Ks in shade leaves, and a three-fold increase of Ks in sun leaves. The increase in Ks was reversible during recovery under low light, and the recovery process was much faster in sun than in shade leaves. The novel effect of high-light stress on the light saturation of P700 oxidation described here may represent a complex reversible mechanism within photosystem I that regulates light-energy dissipation and thus protects photosystem I from photo-oxidative damage. Moreover, we show that under high-light stress a high proportion of P700 accumulates in the oxidized state, P700+. Presumably, conversion of excitation energy to heat by this cation radical may efficiently contribute to photoprotection.  相似文献

The effects of shade on the growth, leaf photosynthetic characteristics, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters of Lycoris radiata var. radiata were determined under differing irradiances (15, 65, and 100% of full irradiance) within pots. The HI plants exhibited a typical decline in net photosynthetic rate (P N) during midday, which was not observed in MI- and LI plants. This indicated a possible photoinhibition in HI plants as the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) value was higher and the minimal fluorescence (F0) was lower in the, and LI plants. Diurnal patterns of stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rate (E) were remarkably similar to those of P N at each shade treatments, and the intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) had the opposite change trend. Under both shading conditions, the light saturation point, light compensation point and photon-saturated photosynthetic rate (P max) became lower than those under full sunlight, and it was the opposite for the apparent quantum yield (AQY). The higher the level of shade, the lower the integrated daytime carbon gain, stomatal and epidermis cell densities, specific leaf mass (SLM), bulb mass ratio (BMR), leaf thickness, and Chl a/b ratio. In contrast, contents of Chls per dry mass (DM), leaf area ratio (LAR), leaf mass ratio (LMR), leaf length, leaf area and total leaf area per plant increased under the same shade levels to promote photon absorption and to compensate for the lower radiant energy. Therefore, when the integrated daytime carbon gain, leaf area and total leaf area per plant, which are the main factors determining the productivity of L. radiata var. radiata plant, were taken into account together, this species may be cultivated at about 60∼70% of ambient irradiance to promote its growth.  相似文献

Ozone pollution may reduce net carbon gain in forests, yet data from mature trees are rare and the effects of irradiance on the response of photosynthesis to ozone remain untested. We used an open-air system to expose 10 branches within the upper canopy of an 18-m-tall stand of sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) to twice-ambient concentrations of ozone (95nmol mol?1, 0900 to 1700, 1 h mean) relative to 10 paired, untreated controls (45nmol mol?1) over 3 months. The branch pairs were selected along a gradient from relatively high irradiance (PPFD 14.5 mol m?2 d?1) to deep shade (0.7mol m?2 d?1). Ozone reduced light-saturated rates of net photosynthesis (Asat) and increased dark respiration by as much as 56 and 40%, respectively. Compared to sun leaves, shade leaves exhibited greater proportional reductions in Asat and had lower chlorophyll concentrations, quantum efficiencies, and leaf absorptances when treated with ozone relative to controls. With increasing ozone dose over time, Asat became uncoupled from stomatal conductance as ratios of internal to external concentrations of carbon dioxide increased, reducing water-use efficiency. Ozone reduced net photosynthesis and impaired stomatal function, with these effects depending on the irradiance environment of the canopy leaves. Increased ozone sensitivity of shade leaves compared to sun leaves has consequences for net carbon gain in canopies.  相似文献

High-light effects on CO2 fixation gradients across leaves   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Chlorophyll fluorescence and internal patterns of 14CO2 fixation were measured in sun and shade leaves of spinach after treatment with various light intensities. When sun leaves were irradiated with 2000μmol m?2 s?1 for 2h, FV/FM decreased by about 15%, but 14CO2 fixation was unaffected, whereas shade leaves exhibited a 21% decrease in Fv/FM and a 25% decrease in 14CO2 fixation. Irradiation of sun and shade leaves with 4000μmol m?1 for 4 h decreased FV/FM by 30% in sun leaves and 40% in shade leaves, while total 14CO2 fixation decreased by 41% in sun leaves and 55% in shade leaves. After light treatment, gradients of CO2 fixation across leaves were determined by measuring 14CO2 fixed in paradermal leaf sections after a 10s pulse of 14CO2. Gradients of 14CO2 fixation in control sun and shade leaves were identified when expressed on a relative basis and normalized for leaf depth. Treatment of leaves with 2000 μmol PAR m?2 s?1 for 2h did not after patterns of carbon fixation across sun leaves, but slightly altered the pattern in shade leaves. In contrast, treatment of sun and shade leaves with 4000μmol m?2 s?1 for 4h decreased carbon fixation more in the palisade mesophyll cells than in the spongy mesophyll cells of sun and shade leaves, and fixation in medial tissue of shade leaves was dramatically decreased compared to the adaxial and abaxial tissue. The interaction between leaf anatomy and biochemical parameters involved in tolerance to photoinhibition in spinach is discussed.  相似文献

A total of 244 plants from two species, Lythrum salicaria and Epilobium glandulosum, were grown individually in hydroponic sand culture from seed for 36 d. Until day 27 all plants experienced an irradiance of 550 μmol m?2 s?1 PFD and on day 27 half of the plants were subjected to a neutral shade treatment in which irradiance was reduced to 100 μmol m?2 s?1 photon fluy density (PFD). Measures of relative growth rate, net assimilation rate, specific leaf area, biomass partitioning to leaves, roots, structural tissues (i.e. stems, petioles and inflorescences) and tissue density were obtained from intensive harvests three or four times per day. The shade treatment caused an immediate decrease in relative growth rate and net assimilation rate. Within hours the specific leaf area of the shaded plants increased and leaf tissue density decreased, thus partially offsetting the decrease in relative growth rate. Biomass partitioning was not affected.  相似文献
