Energy consumption of municipal wastewater treatment plants can be reduced by the anaerobic pre-treatment of the main wastewater stream. After this pre-treatment, nitrogen can potentially be removed by partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A). Currently, the application of PN/A is limited to nitrogen-rich streams (>500 mg L?1) and temperatures 25–35 °C. But, anaerobically pretreated municipal wastewater is characterized by much lower nitrogen concentrations (20–100 mg L?1) and lower temperatures (10–25 °C). We operated PN/A under similar conditions: total ammonium nitrogen concentration 50 mg L?1 and lab temperature (22 °C). PN/A was operated for 342 days in a 4 L moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). At 0.4 mg O2 L?1, nitrogen removal rate 33 g N m?3 day?1 and 80 % total nitrogen removal efficiency was achieved. The capacity of the reactor was limited by low AOB activity. We observed significant anammox activity (40 g N m?3 day?1) even at 12 °C, improving the applicability of PN/A for municipal wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Sequencing batch reactors were used to study anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process under temperature shock. Both long-term (15–35 °C) and short-term (10–50 °C) temperature effects on nitrogen removal performance were performed. In reactor operation test, the results indicated that ammonium removal rate decreased from 0.35 kg/(m3 day) gradually to 0.059 kg/(m3 day) when temperature dropped from 35 to 15 °C. Although bacteria morphology was not modified, sludge settling velocity decreased with decreasing temperature. In batch test, apparent activation energy (Ea) increased with decreasing temperature, which suggested the activity decrease of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AAOB). Low temperature inhibited AAOB and weakened nitrogen removal performance. The cardinal temperature model with inflection was first used to describe temperature effect on anammox process. Simulated results revealed that anammox reaction could occur at 10.52–50.15 °C with maximum specific anammox activity of 0.50 kg/(kg day) at 36.72 °C. The cold acclimatization of AAOB could be achieved and glycine betaine could slightly improve nitrogen removal performance at low temperature.  相似文献

Energy-positive sewage treatment can be achieved by implementation of oxygen-limited autotrophic nitrification/denitrification (OLAND) in the main water line, as the latter does not require organic carbon and therefore allows maximum energy recovery through anaerobic digestion of organics. To test the feasibility of mainstream OLAND, the effect of a gradual temperature decrease from 29 to 15 °C and a chemical oxygen demand (COD)/N increase from 0 to 2 was tested in an OLAND rotating biological contactor operating at 55–60 mg NH4 +–N?L?1 and a hydraulic retention time of 1 h. Moreover, the effect of the operational conditions and feeding strategies on the reactor cycle balances, including NO and N2O emissions were studied in detail. This study showed for the first time that total nitrogen removal rates of 0.5 g N?L?1?day?1 can be maintained when decreasing the temperature from 29 to 15 °C and when low nitrogen concentration and moderate COD levels are treated. Nitrite accumulation together with elevated NO and N2O emissions (5 % of N load) were needed to favor anammox compared with nitratation at low free ammonia (<0.25 mg N?L?1), low free nitrous acid (<0.9 μg N?L?1), and higher DO levels (3–4 mg O2?L?1). Although the total nitrogen removal rates showed potential, the accumulation of nitrite and nitrate resulted in lower nitrogen removal efficiencies (around 40 %), which should be improved in the future. Moreover, a balance should be found in the future between the increased NO and N2O emissions and a decreased energy consumption to justify OLAND mainstream treatment.  相似文献

A plug-flow type anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) reactor was developed using malt ceramics (MC) produced from carbonized spent grains as the biomass carriers for anammox sludge. Partial nitrified effluent of the filtrate from the sludge dehydrator of a brewery company was used as influent to a 20 L anammox reactor using MC. An average volumetric nitrogen removal rate (VNR) of 8.78 kg-N/m3/day was maintained stably for 76 days with 1 h of HRT. In a larger anammox reactor (400 L), an average VNR of 4.84 kg-N/m3/day could be maintained for 86 days during the treatment of low strength synthetic inorganic wastewater. As a result of bacterial community analysis for the 20 L anammox reactor, Asahi BRW1, probably originating from the wastewater collected at Asahi Breweries, was detected as the dominant anammox bacterium. These anammox reactors were characterized by a high NH4-N removal capacity for low strength wastewater with a short hydraulic retention time.  相似文献

The feasibility of using a two-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal process to treat sewage was examined in this study. The obtained results showed that total nitrogen (TN) could be efficiently removed by 88.38% when influent TN and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 45.87 and 44.40 mg/L, respectively. In the first stage, nitritation was instantly achieved by the bioaugmentation strategy, and can be maintained under limited oxygen condition (below 0.2mg/L). The ratio of nitrite to ammonium in the effluent of the nitritation reactor can be controlled at approximate 1.0 by adjusting aeration rate. In the second stage, anammox was realized in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, where the total nitrogen removal rate was 0.40 kg Nm(-3)d(-1) under limited-substrate condition. Therefore, the organic matter in sewage can be firstly concentrated in biomass which could generate biogas (energy). Then, nitrogen in sewage could be removed in a two-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal process.  相似文献

Single-stage nitritation–anammox combines the growth of aerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) in one reactor. The necessary compromise of their milieu conditions often leads to the growth of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). For this study, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for nitritation–anammox was operated for 180 days with sewage sludge reject water (removal capacity, 0.4 kg?N?m?3?day?1). The growth of NOB was favored by enhanced oxygen supply rather than extended aerobic phases. Suspended-type biomass from this SBR was taken regularly and sieved into three size fractions (all of them <1,000 μm). Batch experiments as well as fluorescence in situ hybridization were performed to study the distribution and activity of AnAOB, AOB, and NOB within those size fractions. Both the measured conversion rates and detected abundances decreased with increasing size fraction. The highest anammox conversion rates (15 g NH4 +–N per kilogram VSS per hour) and the highest abundances of Brocadia fulgida were found in the medium size fraction (100–315 μm). The batch experiments proved to be accurate tools for the monitoring of multiple processes in the reactor. The results were representative for reactor performance during the 6 months of reactor operation.  相似文献

In this study, combination of a partial nitritation reactor, using immobilized polyethylene glycol (PEG) gel carriers, and a continuous stirred granular anammox reactor was investigated for nitrogen removal from livestock manure digester liquor. Successful nitrite accumulation in the partial nitritation reactor was observed as the nitrite production rate reached 2.1 kg-N/m3/day under aerobic nitrogen loading rate of 3.8 kg-N/m3/day. Simultaneously, relatively high free ammonia concentrations (average 50 mg-NH3/l) depressed the activity of nitrite oxidizing bacteria with nitrate concentration never exceeding 3% of TN concentration in the effluent of the partial nitritation reactor (maximum 35.2 mg/l). High nitrogen removal rates were achieved in the granular anammox reactor with the highest removal rate being 3.12 kg-N/m3/day under anaerobic nitrogen loading rate of 4.1 kg-N/m3/day. Recalcitrant organic compounds in the digester liquor did not impair anammox reaction and the SS accumulation in the granular anammox reactor was minimal. The results of this study demonstrated that partial nitritation–anammox combination has the potential to successfully remove nitrogen from livestock manure digester liquor.  相似文献

This paper investigates the effect of temperature on nitrogen and carbon removal by aerobic granules from landfill leachate with a high ammonium concentration and low concentration of biodegradable organics. The study was conducted in three stages; firstly the operating temperature of the batch reactor with aerobic granules was maintained at 29 °C, then at 25 °C, and finally at 20 °C. It was found that a gradual decrease in operational temperature allowed the nitrogen-converting community in the granules to acclimate, ensuring efficient nitrification even at ambient temperature (20 °C). Ammonium was fully removed from leachate regardless of the temperature, but higher operational temperatures resulted in higher ammonium removal rates [up to 44.2 mg/(L h) at 29 °C]. Lowering the operational temperature from 29 to 20 °C decreased nitrite accumulation in the GSBR cycle. The highest efficiency of total nitrogen removal was achieved at 25 °C (36.8 ± 10.9 %). The COD removal efficiency did not exceed 50 %. Granules constituted 77, 80 and 83 % of the biomass at 29, 25 and 20 °C, respectively. Ammonium was oxidized by both aerobic and anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria. Accumulibacter sp., Thauera sp., cultured Tetrasphaera PAO and AzoarcusThauera cluster occurred in granules independent of the temperature. Lower temperatures favored the occurrence of denitrifiers of Zooglea lineage (not Z. resiniphila), bacteria related to Comamonadaceae, Curvibacter sp., Azoarcus cluster, Rhodobacter sp., Roseobacter sp. and Acidovorax spp. At lower temperatures, the increased abundance of denitrifiers compensated for the lowered enzymatic activity of the biomass and ensured that nitrogen removal at 20 °C was similar to that at 25 °C and significantly higher than removal at 29 °C.  相似文献

In this study, anammox bacteria were rapidly enriched in sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs) with different inoculations. The activated sludge taken from a sequencing batch reactor was used and inoculated to SBBR1, while SBBR2 was seeded with stored anaerobic sludge from an upflow anaerobic fixed bed (2-year stored at 5–15 °C). Nitrogen removal performance, anammox activity, biofilm characteristics and variation of the microbial community were evaluated. The maximum total nitrogen loading rate (NLR) of SBBR1 gradually reached to 1.62 kg?N/(m3/day) with a removal efficiency higher than 88 % and the NLR of SBBR2 reached to 1.43 kg?N/(m3/day) with a removal efficiency of 86 %. SBBR2 was more stable compared to SBBR1. These results, combined with molecular techniques such as scanning electron microscope, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism, indicated that different genera of anammox bacteria became dominant. This research also demonstrates that SBBR is a promising bioreactor for starting up and enriching anammox bacteria.  相似文献

In the present study, the capacity of enrichments derived from marine sediments collected from different sites of the Mexican littoral to perform anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) coupled to sulfide-dependent denitrification for simultaneous removal of ammonium and sulfide linked to nitrite reduction was evaluated. Sulfide-dependent denitrification out-competed anammox during the simultaneous oxidation of sulfide and ammonium. Significant accumulation of elemental sulfur (ca. 14–30 % of added sulfide) occurred during the coupling between the two respiratory processes, while ammonium was partly oxidized (31–47 %) due to nitrite limitation imposed in sediment incubations. Nevertheless, mass balances revealed up to 38 % more oxidation of the electron donors available (ammonium and sulfide) than that expected from stoichiometry. Recycling of nitrite, from nitrate produced through anammox, is proposed to contribute to extra oxidation of sulfide, while additional ammonium oxidation is suggested by sulfate-reducing anammox (SR-anammox). The complex interaction between nitrogenous and sulfurous compounds occurring through the concomitant presence of autotrophic denitrification, conventional anammox and SR-anammox may significantly drive the nitrogen and sulfur fluxes in marine environments.  相似文献

In wastewater treatment plants with anaerobic sludge digestion, 15-20% of the nitrogen load is recirculated to the main stream with the return liquors from dewatering. Separate treatment of this ammonium-rich digester supernatant would significantly reduce the nitrogen load of the activated sludge system. Some years ago, a novel biological process was discovered in which ammonium is converted to nitrogen gas under anoxic conditions with nitrite as the electron acceptor (anaerobic ammonium oxidation, anammox). Compared to conventional nitrification and denitrification, the aeration and carbon-source demand is reduced by over 50 and 100%, respectively. The combination of partial nitritation to produce nitrite in a first step and subsequent anaerobic ammonium oxidation in a second reactor was successfully tested on a pilot scale (3.6 m(3)) for over half a year. This report focuses on the feasibility of nitrogen removal from digester effluents from two different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with the combined partial nitritation/anammox process. Nitritation was performed in a continuously stirred tank reactor (V=2.0 m(3)) without sludge retention. Some 58% of the ammonium in the supernatant was converted to nitrite. At 30 degrees C the maximum dilution rate D(x) was 0.85 d(-1), resulting in nitrite production of 0.35 kg NO(2)-N m(-3)(reactor) d(-1). The nitrate production was marginal. The anaerobic ammonium oxidation was carried out in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR, V=1.6 m(3)) with a nitrogen elimination rate of 2.4 kg N m(-3)(reactor) d(-1) during the nitrite-containing periods of the SBR cycle. Over 90% of the inlet nitrogen load to the anammox reactor was removed and the sludge production was negligible. The nitritation efficiency of the first reactor limited the overall maximum rate of nitrogen elimination.  相似文献

Effects of nitrite inhibition on anaerobic ammonium oxidation   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
In order to assess the stability of nitrogen removal systems utilizing anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), it is necessary to study the toxic effects of nitrite on these biochemical reactions. In this study, the effects of nitrite on anammox bacteria entrapped in gel carriers were investigated using batch and continuous feeding tests. The results showed that the nitrite concentration in a reactor must be less than 274-mg N/L in order to prevent a decrease in the anammox activity, which occurred when the gel carriers were soaked in nitrite solutions with concentrations greater than 274-mg N/L in a batch test. In a continuous feeding test, nitrite inhibition was not observed at low concentrations of nitrite. However, the anammox activity decreased to 10% when the nitrite concentration increased to 750-mg N/L over a 7-day period in the reactor. In addition, it was shown that the effects of nitrogen on the anammox reaction were reversible because the anammox activity completely recovered within 3 days when the influent nitrite concentration was decreased to less than 274-mg N/L.  相似文献

Anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) process plays an important role in the nitrogen cycle of the worldwide anoxic and mesophilic habitats. Recently, the existence and activity of anammox bacteria have been detected in some thermophilic environments, but their existence in the geothermal subterranean oil reservoirs is still not reported. This study investigated the abundance, distribution and functional diversity of anammox bacteria in nine out of 17 high-temperature oil reservoirs by molecular ecology analysis. High concentration (5.31–39.2 mg l?1) of ammonium was detected in the production water from these oilfields with temperatures between 55°C and 75°C. Both 16S rRNA and hzo molecular biomarkers indicated the occurrence of anammox bacteria in nine out of 17 samples. Most of 16S rRNA gene phylotypes are closely related to the known anammox bacterial genera Candidatus Brocadia, Candidatus Kuenenia, Candidatus Scalindua, and Candidatus Jettenia, while hzo gene phylotypes are closely related to the genera Candidatus Anammoxoglobus, Candidatus Kuenenia, Candidatus Scalindua, and Candidatus Jettenia. The total bacterial and anammox bacterial densities were 6.4?±?0.5?×?103 to 2.0?±?0.18?×?106 cells ml?1 and 6.6?±?0.51?×?102 to 4.9?±?0.36?×?104 cell ml?1, respectively. The cluster I of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed distant identity (<92%) to the known Candidatus Scalindua species, inferring this cluster of anammox bacteria to be a new species, and a tentative name Candidatus “Scalindua sinooilfield” was proposed. The results extended the existence of anammox bacteria to the high-temperature oil reservoirs.  相似文献

Key Physiology of Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation   总被引:19,自引:1,他引:18       下载免费PDF全文
The physiology of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) aggregates grown in a sequencing batch reactor was investigated quantitatively. The physiological pH and temperature ranges were 6.7 to 8.3 and 20 to 43°C, respectively. The affinity constants for the substrates ammonium and nitrite were each less than 0.1 mg of nitrogen per liter. The anammox process was completely inhibited by nitrite concentrations higher than 0.1 g of nitrogen per liter. Addition of trace amounts of either of the anammox intermediates (1.4 mg of nitrogen per liter of hydrazine or 0.7 mg of nitrogen per liter of hydroxylamine) restored activity completely.  相似文献

In the present study, we explored the metabolic versatility of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria in a variety of Fe (III) concentrations. Specifically, we investigated the impacts of Fe (III) on anammox growth rates, on nitrogen removal performance, and on microbial community dynamics. The results from our short-term experiments revealed that Fe (III) concentrations (0.04–0.10 mM) significantly promote the specific anammox growth rate from 0.1343 to 0.1709 d?1. In the long-term experiments, the Anammox-anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) was operated over 120 days and achieved maximum NH4 +-N, NO2 ?-N, and TN efficiencies of 90.98 ± 0.35, 93.78 ± 0.29, and 83.66 ± 0.46 %, respectively. Pearson’s correlation coefficients between anammox-(narG + napA), anammox-nrfA, and anammox-FeRB all exceeded r = 0.820 (p < 0.05), confirming an interaction and ecological association among the nitrogen and iron-cycling-related microbial communities. Illumina MiSeq sequencing indicated that Chloroflexi (34.39–39.31 %) was the most abundant phylum in an Anammox-ASBR system, followed by Planctomycetes (30.73–35.31 %), Proteobacteria (15.40–18.61 %), and Chlorobi (4.78–6.58 %). Furthermore, we found that higher Fe (III) supplementation (>0.06 mM) could result in the community succession of anammox species, in which Candidatus Brocadia and Candidatus Kuenenia were the dominant anammox bacteria species. Combined analyses indicated that the coupling of anammox, dissimilatory nitrogen reduction to ammonium, and iron reduction accounted for nitrogen loss in the Anammox-ASBR system. Overall, the knowledge gained in this study provides novel insights into the microbial community dynamics and metabolic potential of anammox bacteria under Fe (III) supplementation.  相似文献

Microorganism with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification ability plays a significant role in nitrogen removal process, especially in the eutrophic waters with excessive nitrogen loads. The nitrogen removal capacity of microorganism may suffer from low temperature or nitrite nitrogen source. In this study, a hypothermia aerobic nitrite-denitrifying bacterium, Pseudomonas tolaasii strain Y-11, was selected to determine the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification ability with mixed nitrogen source at 15 °C. The sole nitrogen removal efficiencies of strain Y-11 in simulated wastewater were obtained. After 24 h of incubation at 15 °C, the ammonium nitrogen fell below the detection limit from an initial value of 10.99 mg/L. Approximately 88.0 ± 0.33% of nitrate nitrogen was removed with the initial concentration of 11.78 mg/L and the nitrite nitrogen was not detected with the initial concentration of 10.75 mg/L after 48 h of incubation at 15 °C. Additionally, the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification nitrogen removal ability of P. tolaasii strain Y-11 was evaluated using low concentration of mixed NH4+-N and NO3?–N/NO2?–N (about 5 mg/L-N each) and high concentration of mixed NH4+–N and NO3?–N/NO2?–N (about 100 mg/L-N each). There was no nitrite nitrogen accumulation at the time of evaluation. The results demonstrated that P. tolaasii strain Y-11 had higher simultaneous nitrification and denitrification capacity with low concentration of mixed inorganic nitrogen sources and may be applied in low temperature wastewater treatment.

Anammox process has attracted considerable attention in the recent years as an alternative to conventional nitrogen removal technologies. In this study, a column type reactor using a novel net type acrylic fiber (Biofix) support material was used for anammox treatment. The Biofix reactor was operated at a temperature of 25°C (peak summer temperature, 31.5°C). During more than 340 days of operation for synthetic wastewater treatment, the nitrogen loading rates of the reactor were increased to 3.6 kg-N/m3/d with TN removal efficiencies reaching 81.3%. When the reactor was used for raw anaerobic sludge digester liquor treatment, an average TN removal efficiency of 72% was obtained with highest removal efficiency of 81.6% at a nitrogen loading rate of 2.2 kg-N/m3/d. Results of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) quantification revealed that protein was the most abundant component in the granular sludge and was found to be almost twice than that in the sludge attached to the biomass carriers. The anammox granules in the Biofix reactor illustrated a dense morphology substantiated by scanning electron microscopy and EPS results. The results of DNA analyses indicated that the anammox strain KSU-1 might prefer relatively low nutrient levels, while the anammox strain KU2 strain might be better suited at high nutrient concentration. Other types of bacteria were also identified with the potential of consuming dissolved oxygen in the influent and facilitating survival of anammox bacteria under aerobic conditions.  相似文献

Aerobic granular sludge was successfully cultivated with the effluent of internal circulation (IC) reactor in a pilot-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using activated sludge as seeding sludge. N removal was investigated in the start-up of aerobic granulation process. Initially, the phenomenon of partial nitrification was observed and nitrite accumulation rates (NO2 ?-N/NO x ? -N) were between 84.6 and 99.1?%. It was potentially caused by ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in the seeding activated sludge, high external environmental temperature (~32?°C) and free ammonia (FA) concentration. After 50?days’ running, the aerobic granules-based bioreactor demonstrated perfect performance in simultaneous removal of organic matter and ammonia nitrogen, and average removal efficiencies were maintained above 93 and 96?%, respectively. The maximum nitrogen removal efficiency of 83.1?% was achieved after the formation of aerobic granules. The average diameter of mature aerobic granular sludge mostly ranged from 0.5 to 1.0?mm. Furthermore, one typical cyclic test indicated that pH and DO profiles could be used as effective parameters for biological reactions occurring in the aerobic/anoxic process. The obtained results could provide further information on the cultivation of aerobic granular sludge with practical wastewater, especially with regard to nitrogen-rich industrial wastewater.  相似文献
