Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) have spread swiftly across the Western Atlantic, producing a marine predator invasion of unparalleled speed and magnitude. There is growing concern that lionfish will affect the structure and function of invaded marine ecosystems, however detrimental impacts on natural communities have yet to be measured. Here we document the response of native fish communities to predation by lionfish populations on nine coral reefs off New Providence Island, Bahamas. We assessed lionfish diet through stomach contents analysis, and quantified changes in fish biomass through visual surveys of lionfish and native fishes at the sites over time. Lionfish abundance increased rapidly between 2004 and 2010, by which time lionfish comprised nearly 40% of the total predator biomass in the system. The increase in lionfish abundance coincided with a 65% decline in the biomass of the lionfish's 42 Atlantic prey fishes in just two years. Without prompt action to control increasing lionfish populations, similar effects across the region may have long-term negative implications for the structure of Atlantic marine communities, as well as the societies and economies that depend on them.  相似文献

High rates of mildly deleterious mutation could cause the extinction of small populations, reduce neutral genetic variation and provide an evolutionary advantage for sex. In the first attempts to estimate the rate of mildly deleterious mutation, Mukai and Ohnishi allowed spontaneous mutations to accumulate on D. melanogaster second chromosomes shielded from recombination and selection. Viability of the shielded chromosomes appeared to decline rapidly, implying a deleterious mutation rate on the order of one per zygote per generation. These results have been challenged, however; at issue is whether Mukai and Ohnishi may have confounded viability declines caused by mutation with declines resulting from environmental changes or other extraneous factors. Here, using a method not sensitive to non-mutational viability changes, I reanalyse the previous mutation-accumulation (MA) experiments, and report the results of a new one. I show that in each of four experiments, including Mukai's two experiments, viability declines due to mildly deleterious mutations were rapid. The results give no support for the view that Mukai overestimated the declines. Although there is substantial variation in estimates of genomic mutation rates from the experiments, this variation is probably due to some combination of sampling error, strain differences and differences in assay conditions, rather than to failure to distinguish mutational and non-mutational viability changes.  相似文献

 Coral gametes from Acropora millepora (Ehrenberg, 1834) and from multi-species spawning slicks provided larvae for use in metamorphosis assays with a selection of naturally occurring inducer chemicals. Four species of crustose coralline algae, one non-coralline crustose alga and two branching coralline algae induced larval metamorphosis. However, one additional species of branching coralline algae did not produce a larval response. Metamorphosis was also observed when larvae were exposed to skeleton from the massive coral Goniastrea retiformis (Lamarck, 1816) and to calcified reef rubble, demonstrating metamorphosis is possible in the absence of encrusting algae. Chemical extracts from these algae and the coral skeleton, obtained using either decalcification or simple methanol extraction procedures, also contained active inducers. These results extend the number of crustose algal species known to induce coral metamorphosis, suggest that some inducers may not necessarily be strongly associated with the calcified algal cell walls, and indicate that inducer sources in reef habitats may be more diverse than previously reported. Coral reefs are rich in biodiversity, in large part because their highly complex architecture provides shelter and resources for a wide range of organisms. Recent rapid declines in hard coral cover have occurred across the Caribbean region, but the concomitant consequences for reef architecture have not been quantified on a large scale to date. We provide, to our knowledge, the first region-wide analysis of changes in reef architectural complexity, using nearly 500 surveys across 200 reefs, between 1969 and 2008. The architectural complexity of Caribbean reefs has declined nonlinearly with the near disappearance of the most complex reefs over the last 40 years. The flattening of Caribbean reefs was apparent by the early 1980s, followed by a period of stasis between 1985 and 1998 and then a resumption of the decline in complexity to the present. Rates of loss are similar on shallow (<6 m), mid-water (6–20 m) and deep (>20 m) reefs and are consistent across all five subregions. The temporal pattern of declining architecture coincides with key events in recent Caribbean ecological history: the loss of structurally complex Acropora corals, the mass mortality of the grazing urchin Diadema antillarum and the 1998 El Nino Southern Oscillation-induced worldwide coral bleaching event. The consistently low estimates of current architectural complexity suggest regional-scale degradation and homogenization of reef structure. The widespread loss of architectural complexity is likely to have serious consequences for reef biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and associated environmental services.  相似文献

The protein L-isoaspartyl-O-methyltransferase, coded by the pcm-1 gene in Caenorhabditis elegans, participates in the repair of age-damaged proteins. We tested the ability of pcm-1-deficient nematodes to survive starvation stress as developmentally-arrested L1 larvae. We found that pcm-1 mutant L1 larvae do not survive as well as wild-type L1 larvae when incubated in M9 medium without nutrients. We then tested whether the starved L1 larvae could continue development when allowed access to food in a recovery assay. A loss of recovery ability with age was observed for all larvae, with little or no difference between the pcm-1 mutant and wild-type N2 larvae. Interestingly, when L1 larvae were starved in cholesterol-containing S medium or M9 medium supplemented with cholesterol, the survival rates of both mutant and wild-type animals nearly doubles, with pcm-1 larvae again faring more poorly than N2 larvae. Furthermore, L1 larvae cultured in these cholesterol-containing media show an increase in Sudan Black staining over animals cultured in M9 medium. The longevity defects of pcm-1 mutants previously seen in dauer larvae and here in L1 larvae suggest a defect in the ability of pcm-1 mutants to recycle and reuse old cellular components in pathways such as autophagy. Using an autophagosomal marker, we found evidence suggesting that the pcm-1 mutation may inhibit autophagy during dauer formation, suggesting that the absence of protein repair may also interfere with protein degradation pathways.  相似文献

The relationship between duration in the fossil record and larval ecology, based on the protoconch morphology, has been analysed for 40 species of Nassarius Duméril, 1806. The lifespan of species with planktotrophic larval development is significantly longer than for those with nonplanktotrophic development. Many species, representing both forms of larval ecology, cluster around certain values of longevity. This macroevolutionary tendency does not correspond to a phylogenetic pattern, nor does it depend on the ecology of the adult forms. The results are explained by means of a hypothesis on dispersion capacity of the larvae, taking into account the particular geological history of the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic regions during the Neogene. The selection pressures responsible for intra- and interspecific variation in avian clutch size have been debated for over half a century. Seasonal declines in clutch size represent one of the most robust patterns in avian systems, yet despite extensive research on the subject, the mechanisms underlying this pattern remain largely unknown. We tested a combination of experimental and observational predictions to evaluate ten hypotheses, representing both evolutionary and proximate mechanisms proposed to explain seasonal declines in avian clutch size. In line with long held life-history theory, we found strong support for both an evolved and proximate response to food availability for young. We also found evidence consistent with predictions that proximate level experiential nest predation influences seasonal declines in clutch size. Finally, older females appear to invest more in reproduction (initiate nests earlier and lay larger clutches) and choose better territories than younger females. Our results highlight the importance of examining multiple hypotheses in a theoretical context to elucidate the ecological processes underlying commonly observed patterns in life history.  相似文献

Synopsis Coral reef fishes almost universally disperse over relatively great distances during a pelagic larval phase. Barlow (1981) suggested that this dispersal is adaptive because adult fishes inhabit a patchy, uncertain environment. This reiterated an older idea that the random extinction of local populations necessarily favours dispersal, since ultimately all populations of non-dispersers will disappear. Whereas this view is based on adult survival, we emphasize a less frequent view that substantial larval dispersal may be adaptive when offspring experience patchy and unpredictable survival in the pelagic habitat. We do not address the question of why these animals ‘broadcast’ rather than ‘brood’, but suggest that species committed to pelagic offspring will be under selection to disperse siblings to spread the risk of failure among members of a cohort. Our arguments are supported by a heuristic computer simulation.  相似文献

Many shorebirds that breed in North America are declining. These trends reflect global patterns in shorebird populations. Here we ask what factors make some shorebird species more prone to decline than others. Specifically, we test the influence of migratory behaviour (route and distance), biogeography (population size and range), life history (body size, clutch size) and sexual selection (social mating system and testis size) on population trends in North American breeding shorebirds. Using phylogenetic comparative methods, we show that species that migrate across continental North America are more prone to decline than species that do not. Our finding that continental migrants are associated with population decline indicates that intrinsic factors may play an important role in predisposing a species to decline. Previous studies within the class Aves have failed to identify migration route as a correlate of decline or extinction risk. Two other intrinsic factors (oceanic migrants and threats on the non-breeding grounds) were also important in our overall models, although neither was significant alone. The moderate explanatory power of our variables indicates that other factors are also important for explaining shorebird declines. We suggest that contemporary threats, most notably habitat loss and degradation at migratory stopover sites, are likely to be important.  相似文献

External chemical signals used by scleractinian corals to recognize suitable substrata for larval settlement and metamorphosis were identified from crustose coralline red algae (CCA). A fragment of coral rubble with CCA induced larval metamorphosis of the scleractinian coral Pseudosiderastrea tayamai. A natural inducer and compounds that enhanced its effect in larval metamorphosis were isolated from the methanol extracts of coral rubble with CCA. A bromotyrosine derivative, 11-deoxyfistularin-3 (10− 7 M) isolated from the CCA, induced the metamorphosis of P. tayamai larvae (27.5 ± 24.0%). In the presence of fucoxanthinol (10− 9 M) and fucoxanthin (10− 9 M), the percentage of metamorphosis induced by the bromotyrosine derivative was further enhanced to 87.8 ± 13.0 and 88.4 ± 17.8%, respectively. Both carotenoids are also found in the coral rubble with CCA. These results suggest that bromotyrosine derivative and carotenoids have a synergistic effect in the metamorphosis of P. tayamai larvae. The synergistic effect provides a higher selectivity for recruitment than a single-component natural inducer for recognizing suitable substrata for larval metamorphosis. Thus, the effect might offer a survival advantage for benthic marine invertebrates.  相似文献

Larval settlement is a critical bottleneck in the process of coral sexual propagation. Promoting coral larval settlement by inducers is a promising strategy in coral reef restoration engineering. In this study, the settlement-promoting effect of Ca2+ on larvae of the brooding coral Pocillopora damicornis was investigated for the first time. Treatment with 40 mM CaCl2 for 24 h effectively promoted coral larval settlement (~ 80%). Moreover, CaCl2 is comparable with the natural inducer, crustose coralline algae (CCA), in both promoting coral larval settlement and post-settlement growth. CaCl2 showed toxic effects on larval survival and growth at high concentrations, and this could be minimized by optimizing CaCl2 concentration and shortening the exposure period. Our study suggests that applying Ca2+ to effectively and efficiently induce coral larval settlement is viable for laboratory research and small-scale aquaculture systems, and it might become a useful tool in future coral reef restoration engineering.

Exotic-dominated ecosystems with low diversity are becoming increasingly common. It remains unclear, though, whether differences between native and exotic species (driver model), or changes in disturbances or resources (passenger model), allow exotics to become competitive dominants. In our field experiment, plant species origin (native or exotic), cattle grazing (ungrazed or intensely grazed once), and species composition treatments were fully crossed and randomly assigned to four-species mixtures and monocultures of grassland plants. We found that biodiversity declined more rapidly in exotic than in native species mixtures, regardless of our grazing disturbance treatment. Early declines in species evenness (i.e., increases in dominance) led to subsequent declines in species richness (i.e., local extinctions) in exotic mixtures. Specifically, Simpson’s diversity was 29% lower after 1 year, and species richness was 15% lower after 3 years, in exotic than in native mixtures. These rapid biodiversity declines in exotic mixtures were partly explained by decreased complementarity (i.e., niche partitioning and facilitation), presumably because exotic species lack the coevolutionary history that can lead to complementarity and coexistence in native communities. Thus, our results suggest that exotic species can drive biodiversity declines in the presence or absence of a grazing disturbance, partly because exotic species interactions differ from native species interactions. This implies that restoring plant biodiversity in grasslands may require removal of exotic species, in addition to disturbance management.  相似文献

The mathematical relations between basal energy metabolism, brain size, and life span in mammals have been investigated. The evolutionary level of brain development, or encephalization (c), is a function both of brain weight (E) and of body weight (P) according to (formula; see text) Brain weight was found to be a linear function of the product of encephalization and basal metabolic rate. The oxygen consumption of the brain (Mbrain) is proportional to both encephalization and body weight according to (formula; see text) The ratio of metabolic rate in the cerebral cortex to that in the brain as a whole depends solely upon the degree of encephalization and is independent of the size of the animal. The maximum potential life span of a mammal was found to be proportional to the product of its degree of encephalization and the reciprocal of its metabolic rate per unit weight. Life span may be regarded as the algebraic sum of two components: (1) a deduced somatic component (Lb) inversely related to the basal metabolic rate per unit weight, and (2) an encephalization component (Le) related directly to the evolutionary increase of relative brain size.  相似文献

Many Caribbean reefs have experienced a phase-shift in community structure, the principle features being a decline in coral cover and an increase in macroalgal biomass. However, one Jamaican reef—Dairy Bull on the north shore near Discovery Bay—is once again dominated by scleractinian corals and several key species have returned. Living coral cover at 6–8 m depth at Dairy Bull has doubled over the past 9 years and is now ~54%. The absolute cover of Acropora cervicornis was <1% in 1995, but increased to ~11% by January 2004. During this time the cover of macroalgae decreased by 90%, from 45 to 6%. We speculate that long-lived colonies of Montastraea annularis may have facilitated the recovery of this reef by providing structural refugia.  相似文献

The first step in a genetic analysis of aging is to identify and characterize the genetic mutants and their controls that will be used. Such mutants or strains are initially identified by their effect on the life span. Yet many genetic interventions are known to have some effect on the life span without necessarily affecting the aging process. It is therefore necessary to prove that one is actually dealing with an aging mutant before one draws strong inferences from the data. Casarett's rules provide an operational test for doing so, relying as they do on the comparison of aging bio-markers in the experimental and reference strains. We show that our previously described genetically based long-lived NDC-L strain and its normal-lived NDC-R control strain differ only in the chronological age of expression of two behavioral and three physiological functional age biomarkers. They do not differ in the sequence or the physiological age of expression of these biomarkers. These two strains comply with the Casarett rules and thereby comprise a valid tool with which to conduct a comparative genetic analysis of aging. The implications of the available data are discussed, including the possibility that aging in these strains of Drosophila melanogaster may be the result of a multiphasic developmental process.  相似文献
