The sludge from hospital waste treatment facilities is a potential source of infectious organisms. The average numbers of micro-organisms in the sludge of hospital wastewater in Taiwan were as follows: total count 8·1 × 107 cfu g−1 (dry weight of sludge), and 1·4 × 106, 3·6 × 105, 1·6 × 105, 2·2 × 105 and 5·5 × 104 cfu g−1 (dry weight of sludge) for total coliforms, faecal coliforms, faecal streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella spp., respectively . Salmonella spp. were detected in 37% (10 of 27) of the sludges from hospital wastewaters. Therefore, the treatment of such sludge to reduce pathogenic micro-organisms should be considered.  相似文献

Water content of Atlantic salmon parr fell from about 84% at emergence (late May) to just under 79% in September but rose again towards March. Na+ content consequently rose from 3·3 mg g−1 dry wt at the beginning of June to 6·2 mg g−1 in early July. It then fell to 4·4 mg g−1 in September, rising again towards March. K+ content rose to a maximum in July to stabilize at 16·6 mg g−1 dry wt in September. The resultant Na+/K+ ratio peaked at 0·43: 1 in mid-June, falling to a minimum in mid-August but rising again in March reflecting changes in the relative proportions of intra and extracellular water. The changes in whole-body chemistry suggest a period of nutritional stress immediately after emergence and during the winter. In streams at higher altitude and of lower nutrient status, nutritional stress during the winter appears to be more severe.  相似文献

The effect of feeding level ( F L; 0·5 to 4% dry diet mass per wet fish body mass) and feeding frequency (once every 4 days to twice per day) on postprandial metabolic response was investigated in southern catfish Silurus meridionalis at 27·5° C. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the specific dynamic action (SDA) coefficient among the groups of different feeding levels ( P  > 0·05). The duration increased from 26·0 to 40·0 h and the peak metabolic rate increased from 207·8 to 378·8 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 when the feeding level was increased from 0·5 to 4%. The relationship between the peak metabolic rate ( R P, mg O2 kg−1 h−1) and F L could be described as: R P = 175·4 + 47·3 F L( r 2 = 0·943, n  = 40, P  < 0·001). The relationship between the SDA duration ( D , h) and F L could be described as D =30·97 F L0·248 ( r 2=0·729, n =40, P  < 0·001).  相似文献

Oxygen consumption rates during embryonic and the first 38 days of larval development of the striped mullet were measured at 24° C by differential respirometry. Measurements were obtained at the blastula, gastrula and four embryonic stages, and at the yolk-sac, preflexion, flexion and post-flexion larval stages.
Oxygen uptake rates of eggs increased linearly from 0.024 μl O2 per egg h-1 (0·323 μl O2 mg-1 dry wt h-1) by blastulae to 0·177 μlO2 per egg h-1 (2·516 μlO2mg 1dry wth-1) by embryos prior to hatching. Respiration rates did not vary significantly among four salinities (20,25, 30, 35%0).
Larval oxygen consumption increased in a curvilinear manner from 0·243 μl O2 per larva h-1 shortly after hatching to 18·880 μl O2 per larva h-1 on day 38. Oxygen consumption varied in direct proportion to dry weight. Mass-specific oxygen consumption rates of preflexion, flexion, and postflexion larvae did not change with age (10·838 μl O2 mg 1dry wt h-1).
Larval oxygen consumption rates did not vary significantly among salinities 10–35%. Acute temperature increases elicited significant increases in oxygen consumption, these being relatively greater in yolk-sac larvae ( Q10 = 2·75) than in postflexion larvae ( Q10 = 1·40).  相似文献

The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for common wolf–fish Anarhichas lupus in the North Sea were: male: L ∞=111·2 cm, t 0=–0·43 and K =0·12; and female: L ∞=115·1 cm, t 0=–0·39 and K =0·11, making this the fastest growing stock reported. Resting metabolic rates (RMR±S.E.) and maximum metabolic rates (MMR±S.E.) for six adult common wolf–fish (mean weight, 1·39 kg) at 5° C were 12·18±1·6 mg O2 kg–1 h–1 and 70·65±7·63 mg O2 kg–1 h–1 respectively, and at 10° C were 25·43±1·31 mg O2 kg–1 h–1 and 113·84±16·26 mg O2 kg–1 h–1. Absolute metabolic scope was 53% greater at 10° C than at 5° C. The diet was dominated by Decapoda (39% overall by relative occurrence), Bivalvia (20%) and Gastropoda (12%). Sea urchins, typically of low energy value, occupied only 7% of the diet. The fast growth probably resulted from summer temperatures approximating to the optimum for food processing and growth, but may have been influenced by diet, and reduced competition following high fishing intensity.  相似文献

Juvenile big bellied seahorse Hippocampus abdominalis were exposed acutely and chronically to elevated ammonia and nitrite {24 h exposure: 0·01, 5·0, 10·1, 14·8 and 19·9 mg l−1 total ammonia-nitrogen [TA-N] and <0·001, 74·4, 99·2 and 123·6 mg l−1 [NO2-N] nitrite-nitrogen and 35 days exposure: 0·11, 0·55, 1·67 and 3·07 mg l−1 TAN and <0·001, 0·92, 4·67 and 9·10 mg NO2-N l−1}. Significant ( P <0·001) increases in oxygen consumption rate and ventilation frequency occurred at 14·8, 19·9 mg l−1 TA-N and 99·2, 123·6 mg l−1 NO2-N for acutely exposed fish. Oxygen consumption rate was significantly ( P <0·05) elevated at 1·67 and 3·07 mg l−1 TA-N in chronically treated fish and ventilation frequency increased significantly ( P <0·05) at 0·55, 1·67, 3·07 mg l−1 TA-N and 4·59, 9·10 mg l−1 NO2-N. There were no significant differences in growth between controls and ammonia exposed fish. Mortalities occurred at 14·8, 19·9 mg l−1 TA-N.  相似文献

Larval and early juvenile growth was backcalculated for individual Japanese sardines Sardinops melanostictus using the biological intercept method based on the allometric relationship between otolith radii and fish lengths. Sardines grew at 0·81 mm day−1 during the larval stage. In the early juvenile stage, they grew from 32·3 to 45·4 mm fork length ( L ) over a 20-day period (0·64mm day−1). Using the observed relationship between L and wet body weight ( W ), W = 0·00942 L 2.99, W of the sardine juveniles was calculated to increase from 306 to 832 mg during the 20-day period. The carbon (C) requirement to achieve this growth in weight was estimated to increase from 5·7 to 9·6 mg day−1. Stomach contents of the sardines were composed mostly of copepods (73%) and larvaceans (25%). Wet stomach content weight ( Ws ) was expressed by a power function of the W , Ws=0·731 W 0·658. Carbon and nitrogen constituted 41·7 ± 1·5 and 10·0 ± 0·4% of the dry Ws , respectively. Stomach C content increased from 2·0 to 3·9 mg during the 20-day period. Three to four cycles of the daily turnover of stomach contents during the 16 h of daytime, corresponding to a gastric evacuation rate of 0·2–0·3 h−1 under continuous feeding, met the C requirement to achieve the backcalculated growth in early juvenile sardines. The Kuroshio frontal waters seem to provide Japanese sardine juveniles with favourable growth conditions.  相似文献

Aims:  To evaluate the effectiveness of organic acids and supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) treatments as well as their combined effect for the reduction of nonpathogenic Escherichia coli and three pathogenic bacteria in fresh pork.
Methods and Results:  The different treatment conditions were as follows: (i) treatment with acetic (1%, 2% or 3%) or lactic acid (1%, 2% or 3%) only, (ii) treatment with SC-CO2 at 12 MPa and 35°C for 30 min only and (iii) treatment with 3% acetic or lactic acid followed by treatment with SC-CO2. Within the same organic acid concentration, the lactic and acetic acid treatments had similar reductions. For the combined treatment of lactic acid and SC-CO2, micro-organism levels were maximally reduced, ranging from 2·10 to 2·60 log CFU cm−2 ( E. coli , 2·58 log CFU cm−2; Listeria monocytogenes , 2·60 log CFU cm−2; Salmonella typhimurium , 2·33 log CFU cm−2; E. coli O157:H7, 2·10 log CFU cm−2).
Conclusions:  The results of this study indicate that the combined treatments of SC-CO2 and organic acids were more effective at destroying foodborne pathogens than the treatments of SC-CO2 or organic acids alone.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  The combination treatment of SC-CO2 and organic acids may be useful in the meat industry to help increase microbial safety.  相似文献

The relationship between Zn and P in the Zn hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens J. & C. Presl was investigated using hydroponic culture. Total concentrations of Zn in the shoots increased from 0·2 to 27 g kg–1 dry mass when solution Zn increased from 1 to 1000 mmol m–3. Water-soluble Zn accounted for > 80% of the total Zn in the shoots containing > 5 g Zn kg–1 dry mass. Total P was maintained at about 3 g kg–1 dry mass in the shoots containing < 20 g Zn kg–1 dry mass, but significantly decreased with higher Zn concentrations. Linear regression between insoluble P and insoluble Zn in the shoots produced a small slope, suggesting that co-precipitation of Zn and P was not an important detoxification mechanism in the shoots. In contrast, there was a strong correlation between insoluble P and insoluble Zn in the roots, with a linear slope of 0·3 — close to the P:Zn ratio in Zn3(PO4)2. Foliar sprays of phosphate did not affect shoot dry mass significantly, but decreased root length and root dry mass significantly at Zn concentrations in solution from 10 to 3000 mmol m–3. Foliar P was translocated to roots to enhance co-precipitation of Zn and P, although this did not enhance Zn tolerance. The results suggest that T.caerulescens possesses mechanisms which allow it to accumulate and sequester huge amounts of Zn in the shoots without causing P deficiency.  相似文献

Backcalculated lengths at the end of the first growth season in wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar differed significantly between parr smolting at age 1, 2 and 3 years over a period of 11 years (i.e. 1983–1993). Mean body lengths of the respective age groups at the end of the first growth period were 11·1, 6·2 and 4·7 cm, respectively. The mean percentage distribution of fish smolting at age 1, 2 and 3 was 14, 78 and 7%, and the mean smolt age was 1·95 years. Mean lengths at smolting of age groups 1, 2 and 3 were 13·6, 15·8 and 17·5 cm, respectively. Females outnumbered males among the downstream migrating smolts with a mean sex ratio (females/ males) estimated at 1·61, with a significant female surplus in 7 of the 11 years sampled. Of the smolts sampled, 14% exhibited enlarged gonads indicative of parr maturation, and all were males (37% of the parr males sampled). Mean annual smolt density from 1975 to 1996 was 13·4 individuals 100 m−2 ranging between 0·3–31 smolts 100 m−2. Mean densities (100 m−2) of the smolts aged 1, 2 and 3 years were 1·5, 9·3 and 0·9 fish, respectively. Mean annual biomass for the 22-year period (1975–1996) was estimated at 437 g 100 m−2, with a range of variation from 136 to 683 g 100 m−2. Smolt age 2 made up 81% of the mean annual biomass (355 g 100 m−2) and smolt age 1 and 3, 8% (35 g 100 m−2) and 11% (47 g 100 m−2), respectively.  相似文献

Mucor circinelloides LU M40 produced 12·2 mU ml−1 of linamarase activity when grown in a 3 l fermenter in the following optimized medium (g l−1 deionized water): pectin, 10·0; (NH4)2SO4,
1·0; KH2PO4, 2·0; Na2HPO4, 0·7; MgSO4.7H2O, 0·5; yeast extract, 1·0; Tween-80,
1·0, added after 48 h of fermentation. The purified linamarase was a dimeric protein with a molecular mass of 210 kDa; the enzyme showed optimum catalytic activity at pH 5·5 and 40 °C and had a wide range (3·0–7·0) of pH stability. The enzyme substrate specificity on plant cyanogenic glycosides was wide; the Km value for linamarin was 2·93 mmol l−1. The addition, before processing, of the fungal crude enzyme to cassava roots facilitated and shortened detoxification; after 24 h of fermentation, all cyanogenic glycosides were hydrolysed.  相似文献

Methylobacterium sp. ZP24, isolated from a local pond, is able to grow in a medium containing 12 g l−1 lactose as a sole source of carbon, giving 5·25 g l−1 biomass yield and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) up to 59% of its dry weight in 40 h. The isolate was also able to utilize cheese whey and produce 1·1 g l−1 PHB. Addition of ammonium sulphate increased the production of PHB from whey 2·5-fold. The potential of Methylobacterium sp. Cow's milk was inoculated with ca 103 and 107 cfu ml−1 Escherichia coli O157 : H7. After fermentation at 42°C for 0–5 h, the yoghurt was stored at 4°C. Two kinds of yoghurt were used : traditional yoghurt (TY), made with Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus starter cultures, and 'bifido' yoghurt (BY), made with the two starter cultures plus Bifidobacterium bifidum . After 7 d E. coli O157 : H7 decreased from 3·52 to 2·72 log10 cfu ml−1 and from 7·08 to 5·32 log10 cfu ml−1 in TY, and from 3·49 to 2·73 log10 cfu ml−1 and from 7·38 to 5·41 log10 cfu ml−1 in BY. The pH values of yoghurt dropped from 6·6 to 4·5 and 4·4 in TY (for low and high pathogen inocula, respectively), and from 6·6 to 4·6 and 4·5 in BY (for low and high pathogen inocula, respectively).  相似文献

The effect of elevated [CO2] on wheat (Triticum aestivum L. Veery 10) productivity was examined by analysing radiation capture, canopy quantum yield, canopy carbon use efficiency, harvest index and daily C gain. Canopies were grown at either 330 or 1200 μ mol mol–1[CO2] in controlled environments, where root and shoot C fluxes were monitored continuously from emergence to harvest. A rapidly circulating hydroponic solution supplied nutrients, water and root zone oxygen. At harvest, dry mass predicted from gas exchange data was 102·8 ± 4·7% of the observed dry mass in six trials. Neither radiation capture efficiency nor carbon use efficiency were affected by elevated [CO2], but yield increased by 13% due to a sustained increase in canopy quantum yield. CO2 enrichment increased root mass, tiller number and seed mass. Harvest index and chlorophyll concentration were unchanged, but CO2 enrichment increased average life cycle net photosynthesis (13%, P < 0·05) and root respiration (24%, P < 0·05). These data indicate that plant communities adapt to CO2 enrichment through changes in C allocation. Elevated [CO2] increases sink strength in optimal environments, resulting in sustained increases in photosynthetic capacity, canopy quantum yield and daily C gain throughout the life cycle.  相似文献

The mean rate of oxygen consumption (routine respiration rate, R R, mg O2 fish−1 h−1), measured for individual or small groups of haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus (3–12 cm standard length, L S) maintained for 5 days within flow‐through respiratory chambers at four different temperatures, increased with increasing dry mass ( M D). The relationship between R R and M D was allometric ( R R = α  M b ) with b values of 0·631, 0·606, 0·655 and 0·650 at 5·0, 8·0, 12·0 and 15·0° C, respectively. The effect of temperature ( T ) and M D on mean R R was described by     indicating a Q 10 of 2·27 between 5 and 15° C. Juvenile haddock routine metabolic scope, calculated as the ratio of the mean of highest and lowest deciles of R R measured in each chamber, significantly decreased with temperature such that the routine scope at 15° C was half that at 5° C. The cost of feeding ( R SDA) was c . 3% of consumed food energy, a value half that found for larger gadoid juveniles and adults.  相似文献

Juvenile sockeye salmon (43–78 mm) survived 100% for 24 h in cages in ice–covered Black Lake, Alaska at oxygen saturations >65% (9 mg l–1), but only 45% at 24% saturation (3·0–3·3 mg l–1) and none at <17% saturation (2·3 mg l–1). All juvenile coho (50–120 mm) survived 100% for 24 h down to 21% oxygen saturation (3·1 mg l–1), and all 50 coho survived 4–5 days at 23–24% saturation (3·2–3·3 mg l–1).  相似文献

The survival of Atlantic salmon smolts on exposure to constant concentrations of cyanide and ammonia, singly and together, has been measured under laboratory conditions at a concentration of 5 mgl-1 of carbon dioxide. The 24-h LC50 values of cyanide and of un-ionised ammonia, in fresh water, were 0·073 mg HCN l-1 and 0·20 mg NH3l-1 respectively at a concentration of dissolved oxygen of 10 mg l-1, and 0·024 mg HCN l-1 and 0·08 mgNH3l-1 respectively at a concentration of dissolved oxygen of 3·5 mg l-1. In 30% sea water the corresponding values were similar for cyanide but markedly higher for ammonioa. In 80% sea water the values were intermediate between those of fresh water and 30% sea water. Prior acclimation of the fish to the respective toxicant increased the resistance of the fish only slightly to cyanide, but with ammonia the 24-h LC50 was increased between 1·4 and 2-fold after acclimation for 1–3 days to between 0·2 and 0·5 of the 24-h LC50 value. Mixtures of cyanide and ammonia were between 0·6 and 1·25 times as toxic as expected, assuming simple additivity of toxicity.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Sterilized raw sewage sludge enriched with sulphate and inoculated with pure strains of Desulphovibrio desulphuricans produced negligible sulphide. Unsterilized sludge supplemented with 7% (w/v) CaSO4.2H2O and inoculated with crude cultures of sulphate-reducing bacteria obtained from sewage yielded 1·0% S2- (wt S2- produced as H2S/vol. of raw sludge) in 6 months at 30°. By repeated subculture more active cultures developed which produced 1% S2- in 7 days and 1·2–1·9% in 28 days. Digested sludge yielded only 0·1% S2-. In semicontinuous fermentations at 30°, raw sludge without added sulphate produced 20 times its own volume of gas containing 70% CH4 and 30% CO2. When 5% CaSO4.2H2O and an active crude culture of sulphate reducers were added, gas production decreased steadily to zero. There were no differences in pH, temperature and redox potential in sludges producing methane or sulphide. The chief cause of inhibition appeared to be the action of sulphide: 0·02% soluble sulphide (S2-) totally inhibited methane formation; 0·01% S2- initially decreased gas production by one-quarter but there was a slow recovery to normal, suggesting acclimatization of the methane-producing organisms to sulphide.
Linked fermentations, in which gas from a methane fermentation swept H2S from a sulphide fermentation, gave a final gas mixture of about 60% CH4, 30% CO2 and 5–10% H2S. The yield of sulphide depended on the rate of sweeping.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are important environmental pollutants and have been found to have adverse effects on a number of different organisms. Aerobic biodegradation of PCBs occurs through direct oxidation of the biphenyl nucleus. Biphenyl degraders are instrumental in the mineralization of PCBs to CO2 and water. Here two bacteria, Alcaligenes faecalis type II strain BPSI-2 and Sphingomonas paucimobilis strain BPSI-3, are described that exhibit synergistic mineralization of biphenyl (using 14C-UL-biphenyl) when grown as a co-culture. Mineralization rates (23·7 and 9·1 nmol nmol−1 h−1, respectively) and extent of mineralization (38·1% and 24·4%, respectively) were significantly different between the strains as well as when compared to the co-culture (35·2 nmol nmol−1 h−1 and 45·2%). Both strains were originally isolated from an enrichment culture, BSEN-2. The co-culture of BPSI-2 and 3 showed a threefold increase in mineralization rate compared with the parent culture and a decrease in the time taken for 14CO2 evolution to occur. There was no significant difference in the extent of mineralization between the co-culture and BSEN-2. Examination of enrichment cultures at the community level may play a role in optimizing bioremediation programmes.  相似文献

1. We report the short-term effects of simulated nitrogen (N) deposition on the understorey of a boreal forest in northern Sweden. Doses of 15N double-labelled NH4NO3 (0·5, 12·5, 25·0 and 50·0 kg N ha–1) were applied to 1 m2 plots in the summer of 1995 and plants were harvested the following autumn.
2. No significant treatment effects were found in either above- or below-ground biomass which was distributed as follows: the ericaceous shrub Vaccinium myrtillus contributed 76%, the grass Deschampsia flexuosa 4%, and the bryophytes Dicranum majus and Pleurozium schreberi 20%.
3. The recovery of applied N in these species was 24, 27, 27 and 32% of the 0·5, 12·5, 25·0 and 50·0 kg N ha–1 applications, respectively, and thus the recovery increased with the N dose.
4. In the 0·5 kg N ha–1 treated plots, the highest concentrations of fertilizer-derived 15N were found in the bryophytes, while in plots given the three higher N applications, leaves of D . flexuosa had the highest concentrations.
5. N application resulted in elevated concentrations of free amino acid N, which indicate increased storage of N in plant tissues. Furthermore, the N application resulted in increased damage to V . myrtillus by natural enemies. The severity of disease caused by two foliar parasitic fungi showed a clear numerical response to N treatment, as did the amount of herbivory as a result of Lepidoptera larvae.  相似文献
