Systematic studies were undertaken on the Caloglossa continua ( Okamura) King et Puttock complex from Japan, Singapore, and Australia, based on morphology and reproductive compatibility. Specimens from Japan had two to six cell rows derived from a nodal axial cell, at the margin opposite the branch, whereas those from Australia possessed only a single cell row. Specimens from Singapore formed one to four cell rows per nodal axial cell and always contained at least one single cell row on any one thallus. These differences were maintained in cultured materials over a range of temperatures or salinities. Type material of C. continua had the same morphology as the Japanese specimens in this study. Carpospores discharged from the Japanese isolate germinated at 10°C, whereas those from Singapore and Australia died at this temperature. In hybridization experiments, the Japanese entity was completely nonfertile with both the Singaporean and Australian isolates. Many pseudocystocarps were produced in the crossing between the male from Australia and the female from Singapore, although the reciprocal combination did not produce any such structures. On the basis of the discontinuous morphology coupled with the complete reproductive isolation, the entities from Singapore and Australia are described here as C. monosticha sp. nov. The entities with multiple cell rows likely expanded their geographic range from tropical regions, where the majority of Caloglossa species are now distributed, to high-latitude regions, and such an expansion would be associated with acquiring low-temperature tolerance .  相似文献

Studies on the morphology, reproductive compatibility, life cycle and molecular phylogeny of the euryhaline red alga Caloglossa provide insights into the speciation events and biogeographic patterns. The C. leprieurii complex is separated into three morphotypes based on the number of cell rows at nodes and the blade width. The three morphotypes are reproductively incompatible with each other, and furthermore many mating groups are recognized within the morphotypes. Incomplete reproductive isolation is occasionally seen between geographically distant mating groups, whereas no sexual compatibility occurs between sympatrically or parapatrically distributed mating groups. In the molecular phylogenetic analyses, the C. leprieurii complex is resolved as two clusters that phenotypically correspond to the single and multiple cell row types, respectively. The strains belonging to the same mating group are closely related to each other, without exception, while the mating groups showing incomplete reproductive reactions do not always make a clade. The genetic distance is generally not correlative to the geographic distance, and this is also suggested by the morphological data and crossability. These results indicate that allopatric speciation has frequently occurred in this species complex, although there is some evidence of long-distance dispersal.M. Caloglossa intermedia , sp. nov. is described from estuaries and salt marshes of Atlantic North America. This species is related to C. leprieurii (Montagne) G. Martens based on the position of rhizoids, whereas it is more similar to C. monosticha Kamiya in the number of cell rows at the nodes. Rhizoidal development of this alga also shows an intermediate characteristic between C. leprieurii and C. monosticha. Crosses were successful between the strains of C. intermedia from Georgia and South Carolina, but neither strain was interfertile with morphologically related species. C. intermedia from Georgia, New Jersey, and South Carolina had identical DNA sequences in the Rubisco spacer and flanking regions of rbc L and rbc S. This alga was more closely related to C. leprieurii in a molecular phylogenetic analysis. The evolution of each morphological character is discussed.  相似文献

The subfamily Gobioninae is a subgroup in the specious fish family Cyprinidae, which bears high diversity in morphological and ecological dimensions and has its most components distributed in East Asia. In this study, the pharyngeal bones and teeth of 39 species belonging to 19 genera of the Gobioninae were examined, with the phylogenetic comparative method (PCM) and correlation methods employed to analyze the character evolution. Three characters on pharyngeal bones (shape of the pharyngeal bones, extension for attachment of the pharyngo-cleithralis internus posterior (PCIP) muscle, and teeth-bearing area) and six characters of pharyngeal teeth (shape of the five teeth in the main row, number of rows of the teeth) were identified and compared. When the character states were mapped on a molecular phylogenetic tree, it was found that, to adapt to different masticatory operations, different Gobioninae species have various morphological types of pharyngeal bones and teeth: some have intermediate pharyngeal bones bearing multiple rows of diverse teeth (conical, coarsely compressed, and compressed), others have broad pharyngeal bones bearing a single row of molar teeth, and still others have narrow pharyngeal bones bearing a single row of extremely compressed teeth. Tests on the phylogenetic signal and evolutionary associations revealed that evolution of the examined characters was all phylogenetically constrained and correlated. Owing to the homoplasy in evolution, it was suggested that the conventional method of using pharyngeal bones and teeth for phylogenetic reconstruction of cyprinid fishes should not be encouraged.  相似文献

Caloglossa species are widely distributed in mangroves and salt marshes around the world and their life history patterns are being investigated in laboratory culture. In Australia all isolates of C. monosticha , C. postiae and C. ogasawaraensis have Polysiphonia -type (P-type) sexual life histories. Among the 70 C. leprieurii isolates from Australia and New Zealand P-type sexual reproduction also is dominant. However, ten isolates of C. leprieurii from the Spencer Gulf and the Gulf of St. Vincent in South Australia give rise to successive tetrasporphyte generations without gametophytes. Moreover, one isolate from Queensland is asexual. Only one South Australia isolate, obtained from Lake Alexandrina at the mouth of the Murray River, is sexual. South Australia and Pacific Mexico are two regions in which asexual reproduction is dominant. In another mangrove dwelling red alga Bostrychia moritiziana (Rhodomelaceae) non-sexual reproduction also is frequent in Australia, New Caledonia and Bali (Indonesia). This asexual reproductive pattern of tetrasporophytic recycling appears to have arisen independently among individual populations of various red algal species in different regions. Investigations are underway on the molecular phylogeny of the Caloglossa leprieurii isolates.  相似文献

We compare phylogenetic hypotheses for iguanian (chameleonids) and anguimorph lizard groups (varanoids, xenosauroids, anguids) which were generated from analyses of genital (hemipenial) morphology, with recent molecular phylogenetic approaches towards the same groups. Taxa with infraspecific communication by means of visible, sexually dimorphic epigamic characters usually have less diverse genital structures than taxa with less developed visible epigamic characters but with a more highly developed chemical intersexual communication. Generally, it turned out in the cases considered here, that phylogenetic hypotheses based on hemipenial characters coincide much better with molecular-genetic phylogenies than with earlier concepts based solely on external morphology. It seems that genital morphological characters are phylogenetically more informative – on both the species and the supraspecific level – than external morphological characters at least in these examples, because the former seem not to be affected by environmental selective pressures but seem to be only subject to sexual selection. Our data suggest that sexual selective pressure on genital structural diversity is higher the less sexually dimorphic, optical cues for infraspecific communication have evolved. They further suggest a correlation with the mating system (single versus multiple matings).  相似文献

Morphological and hybridization experiments were performed on Caloglossa leprieurii (Montagne) J. Agardh collected from Japan, Singapore and Australia in order to evaluate taxonomic characters of this species. Within C. leprieurii at least four mating groups were recognized from the Indo-Pacific region. These mating groups could be characterized by the blade width at the inter-node and the cell-row numbers on the opposite side derived from the first axial cell at the main axis, though these properties showed a certain variability even in the same plant under both field and culture conditions. The phylogenetic relationship and geographic distribution of the four mating groups are discussed.  相似文献

We describe a new species of Alopoglossus from the Pacific slopes of the Andes in northern Ecuador based on morphological and molecular evidence. The new species differs most significantly from all other congeners in having a double longitudinal row of widened gular scales, lanceolate dorsal scales in transverse rows, 29–32 dorsal scales in a transverse row at midbody, and 4 longitudinal rows of ventrals at midbody. It is most similar in morphology to A. festae, the only species of Alopoglossus currently recognized in western Ecuador. We analyze the phylogenetic relationships among species of Alopoglossus based on the mitochondrial gene ND4. Cis-Andean [east of the Andes] and Trans-Andean [west of the Andes] species are nested in two separate clades, suggesting that the uplift of these mountains had an important effect in the diversification of Alopoglossus. In addition, we present an updated key to the species of Alopoglossus.  相似文献

Sassoon's isolate identified as Borzia trilocularis (but recently renamed Hormoscilla pringsheimii Anagnostidis and Komárek (1988) was studied with transmission electron microscopy because of its unusual combination of longitudinal wall features, described here in development for the first time. Junctional pores (linear rows of circumferential L-II layer pores near crosswalls) developed into multiple, parallel series, unlike the pores in many other species, which form only single rows. In dividing cells, two single pore rows appear opposite crosswalls after crosswall initiation, but an additional parallel row is usually added to each row by completion of fission. Elongating cells reveal 3–6 parallel and uniformly spaced pore rows developing on each side of crosswall pairs; these rows may end up toward the center of the cell wall after cell elongation. Pores are 18–24 nm wide with a center-to-center and row-to-row distance of 24–36 nm and occur in an especially thick L-II area. The second group of pit-like pores of longitudinal cell walls are 50–135 nm-wide depressions and have a center-to-center distance of 100–1000 nm. These depressions arise when the L-II layer fails to form and appear next to a row-pair of junctional pores soon after fission. Most depressions form single rows, but when they form several rows they may cover much of the surface of the cell. The L-III and L-IV wall layers line these L-II layer cavities; the outer surface of the L-IV layer around and within the depressions is covered with fibrous mucilage. Given their diversity, pores and depressions of longitudinal walls deserve further attention from functional and taxonomic points of view.  相似文献

The ranges of morphological variabilities in vegetative cells of three closely related mating groups of Closterium ehrenbergii Meneghini were statistically analyzed, having been grown under standard and uniform culture conditions, using Group A clones from Japan and Australia, Group B clones from Japan and Taiwan and Group H clones from Nepal. Significant differences in the morphological characters were not recognized between the two complementary mating types in any of the three groups. It has been shown that cells of Group A are smallest (mean width 50 μm and mean length 250 μm) and cells of Group B are largest (mean width 67 μm and mean length 404 μm), while cells of Group H are intermediate (mean width 57 μm and mean length 333 μm). There are considerable differences in the mean cell size between the three mating groups, although some intergrading clones were recognized. Degrees of the intergrading overlap were shown to be small between the sympatric groups (A and B) and large between the two pairs of allopatric groups (A and H & B and H). It has been shown that cells of Group A are shorter and much more curved than cells of the other two mating groups. Cells of Groups B and H are slender and less curved. It has also been shown that the ranges in cell size of each mating group are smaller than those currently accepted for C. ehrenbergii.  相似文献

Intraspecific studies of red algae have relied on nuclear or plastid markers rather than mitochondrial data to address questions of systematics, biogeography or population genetics. In this study, primers were developed that spanned the noncoding intergenic region between the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 2 and cytochrome oxidase subunit 3 genes. These primers were demonstrated to be successful on a variety of red algae in different orders: Gracilariales, Bonnemaisoniales and Ceramiales (families: Delesseriaceae, Ceramiaceae and Rhodomelaceae). Amplification products were between 450 and 320 bp in length, with variation in length shown among geographically distant isolates within a species. The region was variable within a single species, as shown for Bostrychia moritziana and B. radicans, and within populations of Caloglossa leprieurii. In the latter species, four mitochondrial haplotypes were observed in isolates from a single locality in Woolooware Bay, New South Wales, Australia. Analysis of hybrids between different mitochondrial haplotypes of B. moritziana revealed that the mitochondria are maternally inherited in this species. This is the first report of a mitochondrial marker that is variable within red algal populations and may lead to a better understanding of the population ecology of these important marine organisms.  相似文献

Geographical variation and differentiation of flightless leaf beetles of the Chrysolina angusticollis species complex were analysed. Nine morphological groups were recognized on the basis of metric characters relating to body size, shape of hind wing and shape of male genitalia, and binary characters relating to females' elytral surface and larval pubescence. The nine groups were essentially parapatric or allopatric to each other. Five groups occupied a continuous geographical range each, whereas another four groups were disjunctively distributed. Morphometric distance and geographical distance between populations were significantly correlated. Analyses based on 13 allozyme loci demonstrated that six out of the nine morphological groups were further divided into more than one genetically distinct group each. Genetic similarity between populations was significantly correlated with morphometric similarity and geographical closeness. Disjunctively distributed populations of a single morphological group more often resembled geographically adjacent populations of different morphological groups than geographically remote populations of the same group. In a morphological group that occupied a wide continuous range, remote populations substantially differed genetically from each other. The results suggest that there exist at least 19 morphologically and/or genetically differentiated units in the C. angusticollis complex in northern Japan. The C. angusticollis complex is likely a superspecies composed of a number of semispecies. We postulate that the diversification of this species complex might have resulted from the repeated range contraction and expansion during the ice ages. Macrocyst formation represents sexual development of cellular slime molds and begins with fusion between cells of compatible mating types. Homothallic and heterothallic strains as well as bisexual and asexual ones have been described. Macrocyst development requires certain environmental conditions such as darkness and excessive humidity. Sexual cell fusion has been analyzed at a molecular level in Dictyostelium discoideum , and several cell surface proteins related to it have been identified. Some of them are common to both mating types, while others are specific to one or other type. The involvement of cell-surface carbohydrates has also been suggested, though direct evidence for this is still lacking. Macrocyst formation is regulated by diffusible, pheromone like substances. Genetic studies on sexual development are scarce, probably because no suitable mutants have been available. However, several asexual mutants, as well as antibody and nucleotide probes, have recently been obtained, so mechanisms of sexual cell fusion may be understood in the near future. Considering the unique phylogenical position of cellular slime molds, analysis of sexual development in these organisms should contribute to the understanding of the mechanism and evolution of sexual reproduction systems.  相似文献

利用蛋白银技术研究了螅状独缩虫无性生殖周期中的形态发生。结果表明:(1)在大核形态尚未出现明显变化时,生发毛基索(GK)的前端即出现原基,随后原基增生扩大。最早出现的是两条将来分别演化为新仔虫第三咽膜(P′3)和第二咽膜(P′2)的原基带,随后出现的是位于外侧的新仔虫的单毛基索(HK′)。同时,新仔虫的第一咽膜(P′1)也开始由老单毛基索(HK)复制,并在细胞分裂后期与老结构分离;(2)大核在虫体分裂过程中由长带状逐渐缩短变粗至扁圆形,于虫体即将分开时迅速拉长,然后分裂为二个新大核;小核分裂先于大核,在两仔虫口毛器即将分开时完成;(3)原帚胚及柄归属老仔虫,新仔虫的帚胚在虫体分裂后逐渐形成,柄内肌丝则在柄鞘形成后逐渐长出。  相似文献

Trials were done in 1987–1989, to investigate the effect of a reflective aluminium painted polythene mulch in protecting rows of narrow-leafed lupin ( Lupinus angustifolius ) from infection with two non-persistently aphid-transmitted viruses, bean yellow mosaic (BYMV) and cucumber mosaic (CMV). The mulch greatly decreased the rate and extent of spread of BYMV from external sources into mulch-protected rows in two trials, but was somewhat less effective in a third. The rate and extent of spread of CMV from an adjacent external source into reflective mulch-protected rows was also greatly decreased in one trial in which the mulch also decreased spread within rows and was effective even when the primary infection source was only 2.5 m away. In a trial sown with CMV-infected seed ( c . 2% seed transmission), the mulch decreased CMV spread from primary foci within rows. Reflective mulch can be used to protect breeders' single row plots of lupins from infection with CMV and BYMV.  相似文献

Two new marine peritrich ciliates, Epicarchesium corlissi n. sp. and Pseudovorticella jiangi n. sp., were discovered in mariculture waters on the coast of northern China near Qingdao. Their morphology, infraciliature and silverline system were investigated based on both living and silver-impregnated specimens. E. corlissi is characterized as follows: marine Epicarchesium with dichotomously branched stalk; zooids elongate, approximately 60–70×25–35 μm in vivo; peristomial collar double-folded; macronucleus J-shaped; single, small contractile vacuole ventrally positioned; more than 60 striations between peristome and aboral trochal band, 13–18 from aboral trochal band to scopula; abstomal end of row 1 of infundibular polykinety 3 terminating at same level as rows 2 and 3 of infundibular polykinety 3; rows 2 and 3 of infundibular polykinety 3 much longer than row 1 and converging adstomally with infundibular polykinety 1. The new species P. jiangi is diagnosed as follows: marine Pseudovorticella; zooid inverted bell-shaped, approximately 80×60 μm in vivo and with a broad, flat, thin peristomial collar that measures approximately 90 μm across; pellicle with transparent cortical vesicles; macronucleus J-shaped; number of silverlines between peristome and aboral trochal band 20–24, from aboral trochal band to scopula 9–11; abstomal end of row 1 of infundibular polykinety 3 diverges from the other two rows of this polykinety and ends alongside row 3 of infundibular polykinety 2.  相似文献

Trait decay may occur when selective pressures shift, owing to changes in environment or life style, rendering formerly adaptive traits non-functional or even maladaptive. It remains largely unknown if such decay would stem from multiple mutations with small effects or rather involve few loci with major phenotypic effects. Here, we investigate the decay of female sexual traits, and the genetic causes thereof, in a transition from haplodiploid sexual reproduction to endosymbiont-induced asexual reproduction in the parasitoid wasp Asobara japonica. We take advantage of the fact that asexual females cured of their endosymbionts produce sons instead of daughters, and that these sons can be crossed with sexual females. By combining behavioral experiments with crosses designed to introgress alleles from the asexual into the sexual genome, we found that sexual attractiveness, mating, egg fertilization and plastic adjustment of offspring sex ratio (in response to variation in local mate competition) are decayed in asexual A. japonica females. Furthermore, introgression experiments revealed that the propensity for cured asexual females to produce only sons (because of decayed sexual attractiveness, mating behavior and/or egg fertilization) is likely caused by recessive genetic effects at a single locus. Recessive effects were also found to cause decay of plastic sex-ratio adjustment under variable levels of local mate competition. Our results suggest that few recessive mutations drive decay of female sexual traits, at least in asexual species deriving from haplodiploid sexual ancestors.  相似文献

Genetic, reproductive and morphological variation were studied in 193 global strains of the marine diatom species Pseudo-nitzschia pungens (Grunow ex Cleve) Hasle to assess potential intraspecific variation and biogeographic distribution patterns. Genetic differentiation between allo- and sympatric strains was investigated using the ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 rDNA region. Three ITS clades were found. Clones of opposite mating type were sexually compatible within clades I or II, and viable F1 hybrid offspring were produced in crosses between them. The molecular differences between these clades were correlated with slight but consistent morphological differences. At present, nothing can be said about morphology and mating behavior for clade III clones because only ITS data were available. The three ITS clades showed different geographic distributions. Clade II was restricted to the NE Pacific, whereas clones belonging to clade III originated from geographically widely separated areas (Vietnam, China and Mexico). ITS clade I was recovered in all locations studied: the North Sea (Belgium, The Netherlands, France), the eastern and western N Atlantic (Spain, Canada), the NW and S Pacific (Japan, New Zealand) and the NE Pacific (Washington State). Clade I thus appears to be globally distributed in temperate coastal areas and provides the first strong evidence to date for the global distribution of a biologically, genetically and morphologically defined diatom species.  相似文献
