In the late 1960s, pathologists at the San Diego Zoo began to notice iron storage in the internal organs of captive lemurs. Hemosiderin was found in liver, spleen, lymph nodes, duodenum, and occasionally other organs. This was most pronounced in Lemur macaco, least pronounced in Lemur catta, with the severity in Lemur variegatus variegatus and Lemur variegatus ruber falling somewhere in between. Since 1968, 20 of 29 necropsied lemurs had hemosiderosis, three with hepatomas, three with cholangiomas, and one with a metastatic pheochromocytoma. In a preliminary attempt to compare their iron absorption, five black-and-white ruffed lemur (Lemur variegatus variegatus) weanlings and five rhesus monkey weanlings were each given ~500 nmol/kg FeCI3 (27.9 μg iron/kg) containing 5 μCi of 59Fe in 0.1 M HCl via a nasogastric tube. Retained 59Fe was measured by whole body gamma counting and found to be roughly the same in the two groups, possibly because insufficient quantities of iron were administered and/or excessive iron absorption becomes apparent only in older animals. Our conclusions were the following: (1) Hemosiderosis in lemurs is associated with tissue damage similar to that seen in humans with idiopathic hemochromatosis. (2) Because iron deposits occur both in parenchymal cells and reticuloendothelial cells, hemosiderosis in lemurs is probably not a model for idiopathic hemochromatosis in a pure sense.  相似文献

The duration of the luteal phase and the 'proestrus' phase in three species of lemurs (Lemur macaco, Lemur catta, and Lemur variegatus) was determined by serum progesterone measurement. Total immunoreactive estrogens were measured and remained below 0.20 ng/ml except for an apparent peak of short duration during estrus. Circulating testosterone levels in males confirm previously described seasonal gonadal function. The reproductive cycle of the female lemur is discussed and compared to the cycles of estrous and menstrual animals.  相似文献

Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), has caused the deaths of many species of animals in zoological parks and research institutions. The Audubon Park Zoo, (New Orleans, Louisiana, USA) attempted vaccination of several species with a killed EMCV vaccine with mixed results. This paper reports an attempt at vaccination against EMCV using a genetically engineered, live attenuated Mengo virus (vMC0) at the Audubon Park Zoo and Miami Metro Zoo, (Miami, Florida, USA) from December 1996 to June 1997. Several species of animals were vaccinated with vMC0, which is serologically indistinguishable from the field strain of EMCV. Serum samples were taken at the time of vaccination and again 21 days later, then submitted for serum neutralization titers against EMCV. The vaccinate species included red capped mangebey (Cercocebus torquatus), colobus (Colobus guereza), angolan colobus (Colobus angolensis), ruffed lemur (Lemur variegatus ruber and Lemur variegatus variegatus), back lemur (Lemur macaco), ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta), siamang (Hylobates syndactylus), diana guenon (Cercopithicus diana), spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), talapoin monkey (Cercopithecus talapoin), Brazilian tapir (Tapirus terrestris), Baird's tapir (Tapirus bairdii), Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus), dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius), bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus), gerenuk (Litocranius walleri), guanaco (Lama glama guanicoe), black duiker (Cephalophus niger), Vietnamese potbellied pig (Sus scrofa), babirusa (Babyrousa babyrussa), collard peccary (Tayass tajacu), and African crested porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis). The vaccine response was variable, with high virus neutralizing antibody titer responses in some primate species and mixed to poor responses for other species. No ill effects were seen with vaccination.  相似文献

Erythrocyte galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (Gal-1-PUT) was studied in four species of lemurs. Electrophoretic phenotypes of Lemur fulvusand Lemur macacowere indistinguishable and different from the phenotypes of Lemur cattaand Lemur variegatus, which were different from each other. Enzymatic activity of hemolysates was species specific, with that of Lemur variegatusabout twice that of either Lemur fulvusor Lemur macacoand almost three times that of Lemur catta.Only minor interspecific differences were demonstrated in pH optima and km for galactose-1-phosphate; however, thermal stability varied considerably with phenotype. Antibody inhibition studies indicated that differences in enzyme activity of hemolysates from these species are probably due to differences in enzyme concentration.  相似文献

The amino acid sequences of the alpha chains of hemoglobins purified from Lemur variegatus erythrocytes have been determined. The sequences were determined primarily from peptides generated from treatment of the isolated alpha chains with cyanogen bromide or warm formic acid. The ordering of the peptides from both alpha globins was based on the homology between lemur hemoglobins and those of other primates. The genetic difference at position 15 (Asn vs. Lys) explains the phenotypic characteristic of two hemoglobin species during alkaline electrophoresis. The function of certain residues is discussed in the context of other known sequences. The dispersion of the amino acid changes noted in lemur species falls mostly within the first 75 residues of the alpha chain (exons 1 and 2). The extent of divergence of the L. variegatus alpha-globin chains from the Lemur fulvus alpha globin is similar to that seen for the beta-globin chains of these species. This degree of separation (11-16 residues) is consistent with an extended period of independent evolution by these congeneric species after their divergence.  相似文献

The middle ear morphology of Lemur variegatus, a strepsirhine primate, is described. Although no promontory branch of the internal carotid artery appears, there is a well-developed "promontory canal" containing a nerve trunk. This structure, which is previously undescribed in strepsirhines, is made up of the tympanic nerve and the internal carotid nerve. The implications of this discovery for paleontology, systematics, and future research are discussed.  相似文献

Lemur fulvus mayottensis, L catta, and L mongoz mongoz at the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust readily catch and consume proffered crickets and locusts. Lf mayottensis and L m mongoz also readily catch and consume small birds and mice, whilst these are ignored by L catta and L variegatus. These differences probably reflect real differences in the predatory behavior of these species, though they may also relate to cage specifications or to the history of the particular groups. These captive lemurs are either perpetuating previously unsuspected wild habits or else innovating in captivity. Observed Lemur predation resembles that of other primate species in being primarily accomplished by dominant individuals (in lemurs, generally adult females), and involving group excitement, as well as snatching and begging by subordinates, which could lead to traditions of predatory behavior.  相似文献

Sympatric populations of Lemur catta and Lemur fulvus show major differences in their occupation of canopy forest levels. Lemur catta is usually found in the lowest levels of the forest, and uses the ground for travel over 65% of the time. Lemur fulvus uses the upper levels of the canopy forest and is observed on the ground in less than 2% of all observations. Comparison of hindlimb musculoskeletal anatomy show statistically significant differences in the lengths of the long bones and the height of the talus. Differences also occur in ranges of tibio-talar and mid-talar joint mobility. The details of insertion of the biceps femoris muscle are distinct in the two species as is the relative mass of muscle associated with flexion of the pedal digits, and flexion of th tibio-talar joint. The metric and morphological differences in the hindlimb anatomy of Lemur catta and Lemur fulvus are consistent with differences in habitat and substrate utilization.  相似文献

Rapid and extensive genetic introgression has occurred between Pecos pupfish (Cyprinodon pecosensis) and sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus) in the wild. We studied both female mate choice and male-male competition for mates among C. pecosensis, C. variegatus, and their F1 hybrids to determine what role these behaviours played in the formation of the hybrid swarm. Female C. pecosensis preferred male C. variegatus to conspecific males, C. variegatus females displayed no significant preference when given a choice between purebred males, and neither C. pecosensis nor C. variegatus females discriminated against F1 hybrid males. We found no evidence for female olfactory recognition of mates. Male F1 hybrids and C. variegatus were more aggressive than C. pecosensis males, achieving greater reproductive success under two different experimentally-induced mating systems. Hybrids were superior to C. variegatus when only two males competed (dominance interactions), but the two types were competitively equivalent in a territorial mating system. Our results indicate that active inter- and intra-sexual selection contributed to the accelerated hybridization between these two species. By including the possibility that some aspects of a hybridization and introgression event may be under positive selection, researchers may better understand the dynamics that lead to hybrid zone stability or the spread of introgressed genetic material.  相似文献

The estrogen receptor (ER) is a key component of the reproductive system of both teleosts and tetrapods. In this study, the sequence and evolutionary relationship of sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus) ER were examined. Total RNA from livers of adult laboratory-reared gravid female C. variegatus was reverse-transcribed to prepare cDNA. Nested pairs of gene-specific degenerative primers derived from conserved amino acid sequences of the ER DNA binding domain were used to amplify an internal fragment of the ER cDNA of C. variegatus using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The amplified cDNA products were inserted into pGEM T-Easy Vector for cloning and sequencing. The cloned ER cDNA segments gave a 524-amino-acid ER sequence, which represents approximately 80% of the sequence. The use of PHYLIP for phylogenetic analysis with the maximum parsimony method and for phenetic analysis with the neighbor-joining method, along with bootstrap resampling, using 24 known sequences of alpha and beta ER subtypes (both teleosts and tetrapods) indicated that the ER cDNA sequence of C. variegatus has strong homology to the alpha-subtype (ER alpha) of other teleostean fish, especially the closely related killifish species, Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). Because ER alpha was the only subtype found, it appears that the alpha-subtype is predominant in C. variegatus liver.  相似文献

Genes encoding the U2 snRNA have been isolated from the sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus and Lytechinus variegatus. Representatives of tandemly repeated gene sets have been isolated from both sea urchin species and a unique U2 gene has also been isolated from L. variegatus. The sequence of the U2 snRNA encoded by the tandemly repeated genes differs in two nucleotides between S. purpuratus and L. variegatus. The unique U2 gene from L. variegatus encodes the same U2 RNA as the tandemly repeated genes. There is a change in the U2 genes expressed between morula and pluteus embryos as judged by a change in the U2 RNA sequence in S. purpuratus embryos. The tandemly repeated genes were expressed at a higher rate in blastula than in gastrula stage relative to the single-copy gene, when the two genes were injected into sea urchin zygotes.  相似文献

Zonocerus variegatus (Orthoptera: Pyrgomorphidae) is known as an agricultural pest in West and Central Africa. In this study, the effects of 13 single and eight mixed host plant diets on the survival, post-embryonic development and morphology of Z. variegatus in the laboratory were investigated. In each cage, 20 one-day larvae were provided with these diets and their survival monitored every two days, from August 2000 to September 2002, until all individuals died. Results showed that the number of larval stages varied from six to eight according to the diet. Six larval stages were most frequent. Development to the adult stage (complete development) was only noted with 52% of diets. All the mixed host plant diets induced complete development of Z. variegatus except that of Cajanus cajan + Synedrella nodiflora + Chromolaena odorata . Complete development was observed with four single host plant diets: Lablab purpurea , C. cajan , Manihot esculenta and S. nodiflora . Compared to leguminous species and Asteraceae, M. esculenta (Euphorbiaceae) was the species that resulted in the highest level of survival and development of Z. variegatus . Chromolaena odorata and S. nodiflora (Asteraceae) induced late appearance of the different Z. variegatus nymphal instars and the appearance time was shorter on legumes. The supernumerary stage 7 has the same color as the larva in stages 1–6, but this larva was significantly larger than stage 6 and smaller than the adult stage. These results indicate that legumes for short fallows affected the survival and post-embryonic development of Z . variegatus in the laboratory.  相似文献

A microsatellite-enriched genomic library was obtained for the Japanese gudgeon Sarcocheilichthys variegatus microoculus, and 15 dinucleotide markers were successfully isolated and characterized. These markers were also available for other Japanese congeners, Sarcocheilichthys variegatus variegatus and Sarcocheilichthys biwaensis. In three populations of Sarcocheilichthys from Lake Biwa and the Ashida River in western Japan, seven to 27 alleles were observed for each locus. Linkage equilibrium was observed among most loci, and only one locus showed significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in a population. These microsatellite markers will be useful for studies of the genetic structure of the Japanese gudgeons.  相似文献

The titer of chrysanthemum yellows phytoplasma (CYP, "Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris") in the three vector species Euscelis incisus Kirschbaum, Euscelidius variegatus Kirschbaum, and Macrosteles quadripunctulatus Kirschbaum (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) was measured after controlled acquisition from infected Chrysanthemum carinatum (Schousboe) (daisy) plants. Phytoplasma DNA was quantified in relation to insect DNA (genome units [GU] of phytoplasma DNA per ng of insect DNA) by using a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedure. The increase in phytoplasma titer recorded in hoppers after they were transferred to plants that were nonhosts for CYP provides definitive evidence for phytoplasma multiplication in leafhoppers. CYP multiplication over time in M. quadripunctulatus was much faster than in E. incisus and E. variegatus. CYP titer was also highest in M. quadripunctulatus, and this was reflected in the latent period in the insect. The mean latent period of CYP in M. quadripunctulatus was 18 d versus 30 d in E. variegatus. M. quadripunctulatus was the most efficient vector, giving 100% transmission for single insects compared with 75-82% for E. incisus or E. variegatus, respectively. By sequential transmission, we analyzed the time course of transmission: E. variegatus were persistently infective for life or until shortly before death. Occasionally, leafhoppers failed to maintain continuity of infectivity even after completion of the latent period. PCR analysis of transmitter and nontransmitter E. variegatus adults showed that some nontransmitters were CYP positive, whereas others were CYP negative. These findings suggest that both midgut and salivary gland barriers play a role in transmission efficiency.  相似文献

We used sequence variation in the mtDNA control-region and ND2 and cyt b genes to assess the systematics and biogeography of the five species of pupfish (Cyprinodon) on Hispaniola. These include four endemics, the relatively large-bodied Cyprinodon bondi, Cyprinodon nichollsi, and Cyprinodon sp., each from a separate lake in southwestern Hispaniola, and Cyprinodon higuey from a coastal lake in eastern Hispaniola. The fifth species consists of coastal populations referable to Cyprinodon variegatus riverendi. The results indicate that Hispaniola has been invaded by at least two forms, first by a late Pliocene progenitor of Cyprinodon variegatus ovinus and the large-bodied Hispaniolan species, and, more recently, by one or more ancestral forms allied with Cyprinodon variegatus variegatus and C. v. riverendi. Levels of divergence indicate that large expanses of open sea have not acted as long-term barriers to inter-island dispersal of cyprinodontiform fishes. This study, together with the molecular systematics of other insular Caribbean fishes, indicates that most insular groups originated from late Neogene dispersal from the mainland. The patterns of mtDNA variation in Cyprinodon showed little congruence with the species/subspecies taxonomy.  相似文献

The red sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, can live in excess of 100 years while the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus has an estimated lifespan of only 3-4 years. In an effort to understand the molecular mechanism underlying the difference in their longevity we characterized telomere biology in these species of sea urchins. Telomerase activity was found throughout early stages of development in L. variegatus and is maintained in adult tissues of L. variegatus and S. franciscanus. Terminal restriction fragment analysis indicated a lack of age-associated telomere shortening. These data suggest that long- and short-lived sea urchins do not utilize telomerase repression as a mechanism to suppress neoplastic transformation.  相似文献

Egg activation at fertilization requires the release of Ca(2+) from the egg's endoplasmic reticulum, and recent evidence has indicated that a Src family kinase (SFK) may function in initiating this signaling pathway in echinoderm eggs. Here, we identify and characterize a SFK from the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, SpSFK1. SpSFK1 RNA is present in eggs, and an antibody made against a SpSFK1 peptide recognizes an approximately 58-kDa egg membrane-associated protein in eggs of S. purpuratus as well as another sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus. Injection of both species of sea urchin eggs with dominant-interfering Src homology 2 domains of SpSFK1 delays and reduces the release of Ca(2+) at fertilization. Injection of an antibody against SpSFK1 into S. purpuratus eggs also causes a small increase in the delay between sperm-egg fusion and Ca(2+) release. In contrast, when injected into eggs of L. variegatus, this same antibody has a dramatic stimulatory effect: it causes PLCgamma-dependent Ca(2+) release like that occurring at fertilization. Correspondingly, in lysates of L. variegatus eggs, but not S. purpuratus eggs, the antibody stimulates SFK activity. Injection of L. variegatus eggs with another antibody that recognizes the L. variegatus egg SFK also causes PLCgamma-dependent Ca(2+) release like that at fertilization. These results indicate that activation of a Src family kinase present in sea urchin eggs is necessary to cause Ca(2+) release at fertilization and is capable of stimulating Ca(2+) release in the unfertilized egg via PLCgamma, as at fertilization.  相似文献

Structure of the sea urchin U1 RNA repeat.   总被引:16,自引:6,他引:10       下载免费PDF全文
The genes coding for U1 RNA in the sea urchin L. variegatus are present in a 1400 base pair tandem repeat. One member of the repeat has been cloned and its sequence determined. The repeat unit contains a single copy of the gene for L. variegatus U1 RNA. This gene encodes an RNA which is 75% homologous to mammalian U1 RNA. The L. variegatus U1 RNA could assume a secondary structure similar to that proposed for other U1 RNAs. In addition the L. variegatus U1 RNA is precipitated by anti-SM and anti-RNP antisera. Analysis of the L. variegatus genomic DNA using the cloned U1 gene as a probe reveals a major and a minor type of repeat unit. The two repeated units are the same length but differ in a number of restriction enzyme sites clustered 200-500 bases down-stream from the gene. The monomer we have cloned and sequenced is a representative of the minor repeat. A sequence (GATAA) which is -41 to -37 bases 5' to the gene has homology to the putative RNA polymerase II promoter. Fifteen bases 3' of the gene is a sequence (CAAAGAAAGAAAA) which is very similar to the sequence found 3' of the sea urchin histone genes. The two Hha I, Hpa II and Ava I sites in the repeat are all unmethylated in sperm DNA.  相似文献

A group of brown lemurs, Lemur fulvus, and a group of black lemurs, Lemur macaco, at the Duke University Center for the Study of Primate Biology and History have been observed to capture and eat birds and lizards. Although vertebrate prey are not unusual for many carnivorous prosimians, folivorous prosimians never have been observed to take vertebrates in the wild and rarely even insects.  相似文献

Lithobius variegatus and L. forficatus occupy similar ecological niches and frequently occur together although there are differences in their distribution in the British Isles. An investigation of their food and reproductive cycles, being a preliminary step towards a further understanding of their ecological relationships, is described.
Lithobiomorph centipedes have hitherto been regarded as wholly carnivorous, but it is shown that these species feed on litter as well as small litter animals, the presence of litter in the guts of these species not being connected with the presence of animal remains. Whereas L. forficatus takes litter throughout the year, L. variegatus does so mainly in the winter.
Both species appear to lay eggs for a considerable part of the year, though there appears to be only a short period of sperm transfer in spring. It is suggested that the long oviposition period may prevent the loss of the entire brood in a dry summer. The succession of epimorph stadia in L. variegatus is described.
L. forficatus was more common than L. variegatus in the drior part of the woods studied.  相似文献
