Recent studies have shown distinct patterns of variation inthe egg morphology (oil droplet number, diameter and densityof chorionic filaments) of Fundulus heteroclitus along the eastcoast (including Chesapeake and Delaware bays). We tested thehypothesis that variation in adult morphology and in electromorphsis concordant with that of egg morphology over the same rangeby subjecting data for these character sets to the Mantel test.This analysis was based on data for three egg characters, nineteenadult morphological (meristic and morphometric) characters andfive protein characters from locations along the Atlantic coast.If the geographical differences observed among locations reflectgenetic differences between two forms that have establishedsecondary contact after isolation, we would expect general concordancebetween the different character sets. We would expect littleconcordance between the sets if they are each affected by differentselectional and/or developmental responses to environmentalregimes. Our analyses indicate that patterns of variation amonglocalities for meristic, egg, and genetic character sets areall concordant, and thus the observed differences among locationsare likely the result of secondary intergradation between twopreviously isolated forms. These conclusions are supported bysimilar patterns of geographical variation in spawning sitepreference and body coloration. Thus, these results supportour earlier suggestion that these morphs should be treated asseparate taxa, with F. h. heteroclitus occurring along the eastcoast from New Jersey south to Florida including lower Chesapeakeand Delaware bays and F. h. macrolepidotus distributed fromConnecticut north to Newfoundland with disjunct populationsin upper Chesapeake and Delaware bays. Extrapair fertilizations (EPFs) are frequently documented insongbirds; however, the extent to which this reproductive tacticcontributes to variance in male reproductive success and hencethe strength of sexual selection on males remains little studied.Using 2 approaches, intraspecific and comparative, we test thehypothesis that the contribution of EPFs to variance in malefitness increases with migration distance in north temperatesongbirds. Using data on the genetic mating system of the scarletrosefinch Carpodacus erythrinus, a long-distance migrant, weshow that the number of extrapair mates and within-pair paternityare the most important components of variance in male reproductivesuccess. There was no evidence of a trade-off between extrapairand within-pair success of individual males as males successfulin procuring EPFs were less likely to be cuckolded. Comparativedata reveal that the opportunity for sexual selection due toEPFs is positively associated with both migration distance andbreeding synchrony in north temperate passerines, and we discussseveral mechanisms that could extend these relationships. Ingeneral, these data suggest that EPFs have a potential to playan important role in the evolution of sexually selected traitsin long-distance migratory songbirds such as rosefinches.  相似文献

Old‐growth tropical forests are being extensively deforested and fragmented worldwide. Yet forest recovery through succession has led to an expansion of secondary forests in human‐modified tropical landscapes (HMTLs). Secondary forests thus emerge as a potential repository for tropical biodiversity, and also as a source of essential ecosystem functions and services in HMTLs. Such critical roles are controversial, however, as they depend on successional, landscape and socio‐economic dynamics, which can vary widely within and across landscapes and regions. Understanding the main drivers of successional pathways of disturbed tropical forests is critically needed for improving management, conservation, and restoration strategies. Here, we combine emerging knowledge from tropical forest succession, forest fragmentation and landscape ecology research to identify the main driving forces shaping successional pathways at different spatial scales. We also explore causal connections between land‐use dynamics and the level of predictability of successional pathways, and examine potential implications of such connections to determine the importance of secondary forests for biodiversity conservation in HMTLs. We show that secondary succession (SS) in tropical landscapes is a multifactorial phenomenon affected by a myriad of forces operating at multiple spatio‐temporal scales. SS is relatively fast and more predictable in recently modified landscapes and where well‐preserved biodiversity‐rich native forests are still present in the landscape. Yet the increasing variation in landscape spatial configuration and matrix heterogeneity in landscapes with intermediate levels of disturbance increases the uncertainty of successional pathways. In landscapes that have suffered extensive and intensive human disturbances, however, succession can be slow or arrested, with impoverished assemblages and reduced potential to deliver ecosystem functions and services. We conclude that: (i) succession must be examined using more comprehensive explanatory models, providing information about the forces affecting not only the presence but also the persistence of species and ecological groups, particularly of those taxa expected to be extirpated from HMTLs; (ii) SS research should integrate new aspects from forest fragmentation and landscape ecology research to address accurately the potential of secondary forests to serve as biodiversity repositories; and (iii) secondary forest stands, as a dynamic component of HMTLs, must be incorporated as key elements of conservation planning; i.e. secondary forest stands must be actively managed (e.g. using assisted forest restoration) according to conservation goals at broad spatial scales.  相似文献

Electrochemical potential differences (driving forces) for sodiumdistributed between the outside solution and the exuding sapof water-culture-grown sunflower plants (Helianthus annuius)have been determined. The results indicated that sodium wasmoving from the outside solution to the xylem against the electrochemicalpotential gradient at external concentrations below approximately0.30 mM Na. At higher external concentrations sodium appearedto be actively excluded from the xylem. An electrical potential difference between the exuding sap andthe external solution of approximately 30 mV was observed. Itwas unaffected by the external sodium concentration. Use ofa short-circuiting technique indicated that the trans-root potentialresides at the plasmalemma of the cortical cells. Driving forces on sodium distributed between the external solutionand the root and between the xylem sap and the root were calculated.They indicated that the root is able to accumulate sodium activelyboth from the external solution and the xylem sap. It is concludedthat sodium transport to the xylem in this species is controlledby the balance of these two opposing forces.  相似文献

The niche variation hypothesis is an adaptive explanation forvariation within populations and for, the differences in variationbetween populations in morphological, physiological or behavioraltraits. It has received only partial support from empiricaltests and has been criticized on theoretical grounds. Recentquantitative genetic models have made an advance by exploringthe effects of mutation, migration, mating pattern and selectionon phenotypic variance. These models are reviewed and theirmost important features are integrated in a new model. In thismodel population variation is in a state of balance betweenthe opposing forces of mutation and immigration, which tendto elevate variation, and selection and possibly genetic drifttending to decrease it. Populations exhibiting different levelsof variation are interpereted as having different equilibriumpoints, and it is the task of empirical studies to determinethe relative magnitudes of the opposing factors. An exampleis given from studies of Darwin's finches. Geospiza fortis variesmore than G. scandens on Isla Daphne Major, Galápagos,in several morphological traits including beak and body size.This is explained, assuming equal mutation rates in the twospecies, as the result of more frequent genetic input to theG. fortis population, through occasional hybridization withimmigrant G. fuliginosa, and relaxed stabilizing selection.Stabilizing selection is less intense on G.fortis than on G.scandens because the G. fortis population has a broader niche;there is both a within-phenotype and betweenphenotype componentto the broad niche of G. fortis. The success of theory in explainingpopulation variation is discussed, and it is concluded thatempirical studies lag far behind theory.  相似文献

In this study, we investigate the relative role of historical factors and evolutionary forces in promoting population differentiation in a new case of sympatric dwarf and normal ecotypes of the rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax Mitchill) in Lac Saint-Jean (Québec, Canada). Our first objective was to test the hypothesis that the evolution of sympatric smelt ecotypes in Lac Saint-Jean has been contingent upon the secondary contact between two evolutionary lineages in postglacial times. Secondly, the QST method was applied to test the null hypothesis that the extent of phenotypic differences relative to that of neutral marker variation would be similar in comparisons involving populations within and among ecotypes. Thirdly, we applied a quantitative-genetic method as an exploratory assessment as to whether the amount of gene flow observed between populations could affect divergence in adaptive traits under specific conditions. This study revealed a unique situation of dwarf and normal smelt ecotypes that are, respectively, characterized by selmiparous and iteroparous life histories and the occurrence in each of two genetically distinct populations that synchronously use the same spawning habitat in two tributaries. Historical contingency has apparently played little role in the origin of these populations. In contrast, an important role of divergent natural selection in driving their phenotypic divergence was suggested. While divergent selection has apparently been strong enough to maintain phenotypic differentiation in the face of migration, this study suggests that gene flow has been sufficiently important to modulate the extent of adaptive differentiation being achieved between ecotypes, unless the extent of stabilizing selection acting on smelt ecotypes is much more pronounced than usually reported in natural populations.  相似文献

Measurements of electrical potential difference (PD) and potassiumactivity were carried out on the intact leaf of Tradescantiavirginiana. PD gradients across the stomatal complex were observedwith both open and closed stomata. The guard cell PD appearedto be linearly related to stomatal aperture. With the stomataopen a gradient of potassium activity across the stomatal complexwas observed which became reversed on stomatal closure. Calculationof the driving forces on potassium suggested that it was distributedpassively between the vacuoles of the cells of the stomatalcomplex. The electrophysiological data obtained from this investigationenabled potassium activity in the apoplast to be calculated.The results showed that on stomatal closure there was a massiveincrease in the potassium activity in the guard cell wall. Epithelial cells undergo striking morphological changes during division to ensure proper segregation of genetic and cytoplasmic materials. These morphological changes occur despite dividing cells being mechanically restricted by neighboring cells, indicating the need for extracellular force generation. Beyond driving cell division itself, forces associated with division have been implicated in tissue-scale processes, including development, tissue growth, migration, and epidermal stratification. While forces generated by mitotic rounding are well understood, forces generated after rounding remain unknown. Here, we identify two distinct stages of division force generation that follow rounding: (1) Protrusive forces along the division axis that drive division elongation, and (2) outward forces that facilitate postdivision spreading. Cytokinetic ring contraction of the dividing cell, but not activity of neighboring cells, generates extracellular forces that propel division elongation and contribute to chromosome segregation. Forces from division elongation are observed in epithelia across many model organisms. Thus, division elongation forces represent a universal mechanism that powers cell division in confining epithelia.  相似文献

Crucifers (Brassicaceae, Cruciferae) are a large family comprisingsome 338 genera and c. 3,700 species. The family includes importantcrops as well as several model species in various fields ofplant research. This paper reports new genome size (GS) datafor more than 100 cruciferous species in addition to previouslypublished C-values (the DNA amount in the unreplicated gameticnuclei) to give a data set comprising 185 Brassicaceae taxa,including all but 1 of the 25 tribes currently recognized. Evolutionof GS was analyzed within a phylogenetic framework based ongene trees built from five data sets (matK, chs, adh, trnLF,and ITS). Despite the 16.2-fold variation across the family,most Brassicaceae species are characterized by very small genomeswith a mean 1C-value of 0.63 pg. The ancestral genome size (ancGS)for Brassicaceae was reconstructed as anc1C = 0.50 pg. Approximately50% of crucifer taxa analyzed showed a decrease in GS comparedwith the ancGS. The remaining species showed an increase inGS although this was generally moderate, with significant increasesin C-value found only in the tribes Anchonieae and Physarieae.Using statistical approaches to analyze GS, evolutionary gainsor losses in GS were seen to have accumulated disproportionatelyfaster within longer branches. However, we also found that GShas not changed substantially through time and most likely evolvespassively (i.e., a tempo that cannot be distinguished betweenneutral evolution and weak forms of selection). The data revealan apparent paradox between the narrow range of small GSs overlong evolutionary time periods despite evidence of dynamic genomicprocesses that have the potential to lead to genome obesity(e.g., transposable element amplification and polyploidy). Toresolve this, it is suggested that mechanisms to suppress amplificationand to eliminate amplified DNA must be active in Brassicaceaealthough their control and mode of operation are still poorlyunderstood.  相似文献

Distinguishing between primary and secondary intergradation among differentiated populations, and the relative importance of drift and selection, are persistent problems in evolutionary biology. An historical perspective on population interactions can provide insight into the nature of contacts, and thus help resolve these questions. Continuously distributed populations of Anolis marmoratus from the island of Basse Terre in the Guadeloupean archipelago of the Lesser Antilles show a striking degree of geographic variation in morphology. Initial surveys of mtDNA variation from throughout the Guadeloupean Archipelago revealed one case where levels of sequence difference and phylogenetic relationships of alleles from morphologically differentiated populations from the east coast of Basse Terre were consistent with primary intergradation. In this paper, I examine the genetic population structure of a series of populations spanning this north-south cline in morphological variation to test the hypothesis of primary intergradation. Sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene from 50 individuals representing five populations spanning the cline were obtained and fourteen unique haplotypes (differing by 2% or less) were detected. Patterns of nucleotide substitution among haplotypes do not deviate from neutral expectation indicating no effect of selection at the level of mtDNA sequences. Estimates of population structure and gene flow were made using both summary statistics for nucleotide diversity (Nat) and cladistic methods. The results are sensitive to the choice of gene flow model, and this is discussed in detail. Mitochondrial variation in the northern populations may not be at equilibrium, and the phylogeny of alleles is consistent with a recent increase in effective population size. Estimates of nucleotide diversity, gene flow, and the phylogenetic relationships of haplotypes indicate that the southern-most population (representing the extreme of morphological variation along this cline) has been relatively isolated from populations to the north and has experienced a reduced effective population size. The apparent clinal variation between the southern population and the others may therefore reflect secondary contact and introgression rather than primary intergradation.  相似文献

Salt-tolerant Brassica juncea L. cell lines or plants have beenselected by screening callus pieces, cell suspension culturesand cotyledon explants in vitro on high concentrations of NaCl.Callus-based selection was unsatisfactory, as only two out ofseven isolated clones retained tolerance after 3 months of subcultureon NaCl-free medium. Selections made via plated cell suspensionswere found to be more stable for salt-tolerance. AH selectedtolerant cell lines, however, failed to regenerate plantlets.A third selection method, employing cotyledon explants was basedon their high potential for regenerating multiple shoots. Outof a total of 2620 explants cultured on high salt media, threesurvived, showed sustained callus proliferation and each regeneratedone shoot. The salt-selected shoots withstood the stabilitytest after 3 months of growth and axillary bud multiplicationon NaCl-free medium. While one of these somaclones was morphologicallyabnormal and sterile, the other two could be reared to maturitywith normal seed set. Flight is energetically very costly. For birds the mechanicalpower in relation to airspeed is characterized by a U-shapedfunction. From this function we can derive optimal flight speedsassociated with minimum power (Vmp), minimum cost of transport(Vmr) and minimum overall time of migration (Vmt). Since flightis energetically so costly, aerial displays and song flightcan potentially serve as signals reliably indicating the individualquality or resource potential of the signaler. In order to maximizethe amount of song flight produced, we expect Vmp during songflight, while during migration we rather expect Vmr or Vmv Wecompared flight speeds of skylarks (Alauda arvensis) duringsong flight and migration flight, respectively. In this speciespredicted Vmp = 5.5 m/s, Vmr = 10.5 m/s, and Vmt = 12.1 m/s.The preferred airspeed during song flight did not differ significantlyfrom the predicted Vmp, while airspeed during migration wassignificantly higher than Vmr and Vmp indicating that flightspeed is a flexible trait that birds adjust to different situations.Why the skylarks speed up so much on migration is still unclear,but it may be that due to the shape of the predicted power curve,variation in cost of transport at high speeds is relativelysmall.  相似文献

Accessory (secondary) axillary buds occurred in 21 out of 32Rubus species, including wild raspberry, R. idaeus L. The adaptivevalue of the secondary-bud character is discussed. Aggregates of biogenic origin >0.5 mm, known as marine snow,represent a concentrated potential source of food for zooplankton.Little is known, however, about whether aggregates are commonlygrazed by zooplankton in the field. While previous laboratorystudies have shown that the euphausiid Euphausia pacifica, andthe copepod, Calanus pacificus, common crustacean zooplankters,consume marine snow if it is the only food source available,it is not known if euphausiids will select marine snow in thepresence of edible dispersed cells, as readily occurs in nature.To examine this question, we offered E. pacifica the diatom,Nitzschia angularis in aggregated and dispersed form as preysimultaneously. Aggregates and dispersed food contained identicalcell types so that differing prey quality, taste or motilitywould not be a factor. A new method was developed to track foodsources by labeling the frustules of aggregated cells with differentnaturally occurring, but rare, stable isotopes of silicon, 30Siand 29Si. Food selection was then estimated by measuring theisotopic composition of silica within fecal pellets producedby animals feeding on mixtures of the two labeled foods. Resultsindicate that E. pacifica consumed both aggregates and dispersedcells, even when more cells were made available in dispersedform than in aggregated form. This suggests that aggregatesmay indeed be a food source in the field, even when dispersedcells are relatively abundant. The method of labeling diatomcells with stable isotopes of silica may prove useful for futuregrazing experiments to distinguish identical cell types.  相似文献

Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain the occurrence of hybrid zones between red-flowered Ipomopsis aggregata and white-flowered I. tenuituba . Either local adaptation to hummingbird and hawkmoth pollinators has given rise to sympatric (or parapatric) divergence of flower colour and morphology (primary intergradation at hybrid zones), or alternatively two previously allopatric species are coming into contact at several geographical areas of secondary intergradation. We examined restriction site patterns in nuclear DNA (nrDNA), chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from populations of I. aggregata and I. tenuituba representing seven zones of sympatry. No variation was detected in a 350-bp fragment of mtDNA and uninformative levels of variation were observed for nrDNA. We detected 22 potentially informative restriction site polymorphisms in cpDNA, all of which united geographical areas containing populations of both species. We detected no informative species-specific markers. Studies of other species (e.g. oaks) have detected similar species-independent geographical structure of cpDNA. However, in these cases secondary interegradation could be inferred from species-specific nuclear alleles. The pattern in Ipomopsis is consistent with both primary intergradation (independent speciation in each area of sympatry) or secondary intergradation involving complete cytoplasmic replacement. Thus, additional data are needed to explain the origin of hybrid zones in Ipomopsis .  相似文献

Population geneticists remain unsure of the forces driving the evolution of Y chromosomes. Here we consider the possibility that the degeneration of the Y reflects its inability to evolve adaptively. Because the overwhelming majority of favorable mutations on a nonrecombining proto-Y suffer a zero probability of fixation, the fitness of the Y must lag far behind that of the recombining X. At some point, this disparity will grow so large that selection favors an increase in the expression of (fit) X-linked alleles and a decrease in the expression of (unfit) Y-linked alleles. Our calculations suggest that this process acts far more rapidly than hitchhiking-induced erosion of the Y and at least as rapidly as the fixation of deleterious alleles on the Y by background selection. Most important, this hypothesis can explain the evolution of Y chromosomes in taxa such as Drosophila that have very large population sizes.  相似文献

Daphnia may respond with an array of anti-predator defences(behavioural, morphological and life history) to a chemicalcue (kairomone) exuded by its predators: fish and Chaoborus.Given the wide array of potential responses, it is an interestingquestion whether anti-predator defences are coupled or independentof each other. Since anti-predator responses are costly andeven possessing the genetic information to respond to a certainpredator might involve a cost, clones may only react to predatorsthey co-occur with in nature. In this study, we provide evidencefor an uncoupling of responses by Daphnia pulex in several anti-predatordefences against Chaoborus. We were unable to detect a correlationbetween behavioural (migration), morphological (neck-spine induction)and life history [growth rate, neonate size and size at firstreproduction (SFR)] responses. Furthermore, anti-predator responsesdid not always comply with what is commonly believed. We foundthat Daphnia clones can migrate up or down when exposed to fishor Chaoborus kairomone and that population growth rate, neonatesize and SFR can increase or decrease in response to Chaoboruskairomone. We also show patterns in anti-predator defences thatseem to relate to the habitat from which clones were derived.Daphnia clones that were collected in habitats with Chaoborusas the dominant predator tended to react strongly to Chaoboruskairomone by migrating upward and producing neck-spines. Themigration behaviour against fish kairomone in these clones wasoften an unexpected upward migration. The Daphnia clone thatco-existed with fish predators showed a downward migration inthe presence of fish as well as Chaoborus kairomone. Clonesthat had occurred with either both or no predators had mixedresponses. We sometimes found an upward migration in combinationwith smaller body size as a response to Chaoborus kairomone.This may be interpreted as a behavioural defence against Chaoborusand a life-history defence against fish. Daphnia seem not toexhibit defence behaviour against predators they do not co-occurwith. It might be costly for Daphnia to maintain genetic informationto respond to these predators and protect that information fromgenetic drift.  相似文献

The great anatomical diversification of paired fins within theActinopterygii (ray-finned fishes) can be understood as a suiteof evolutionary transformations in design. At a broad taxonomicscale, two clear trends exist in the morphology of the anteriorlysituated pectoral fins. In comparing basal to more derived clades,there are general patterns of (i) reorientation of the pectoralfin base from a nearly horizontal to more vertical inclination,and (ii) migration of the pectoral fin from a ventral to mid-dorsalbody position. As yet, the functional significance of thesehistorical trends in pectoral fin design remains largely untestedby experiment. In this paper we test the proposal that variationin pectoral fin structure has an important influence on themagnitude and orientation of fluid forces generated during maneuveringlocomotion. Using digital particle image velocimetry for quantitativewake visualization, we measure swimming forces in ray-finnedfishes exhibiting the plesiomorphic and apomorphic pectoralfin anatomy. Our experiments focus on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchusmykiss), a lower teleost with pectoral fins positioned ventrallyand with nearly horizontally inclined fin bases, and bluegillsunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), a relatively derived perciformfish with more vertically oriented pectoral fins positionedmid-dorsally on the body. In support of hypotheses arising fromour prior wake studies and previously untested models in theliterature, we find that the pectoral fins of sunfish generatesignificantly higher forces for turning and direct braking forcescloser to the center of mass of the body than the pectoral finsof trout. These results provide insight into the hydrodynamicimportance of major evolutionary transformations in pectoralfin morphology within the Actinopterygii.  相似文献

Given the relative ease of identifying genetic markers linked to QTL (compared to finding the loci themselves), it is natural to ask whether linked markers can be used to address questions concerning the contemporary dynamics and recent history of the QTL. In particular, can a marker allele found associated with a QTL allele in a QTL mapping study be used to track population dynamics or the history of the QTL allele? For this strategy to succeed, the marker-QTL haplotype must persist in the face of recombination over the relevant time frame. Here we investigate the dynamics of marker-QTL haplotype frequencies under recombination, population structure, and divergent selection to assess the potential utility of linked markers for a population genetic study of QTL. For two scenarios, described as "secondary contact" and "novel allele," we use both deterministic and stochastic methods to describe the influence of gene flow between habitats, the strength of divergent selection, and the genetic distance between a marker and the QTL on the persistence of marker-QTL haplotypes. We find that for most reasonable values of selection on a locus (s < or = 0.5) and migration (m > 1%) between differentially selected populations, haplotypes of typically spaced markers (5 cM) and QTL do not persist long enough (>100 generations) to provide accurate inference of the allelic state at the QTL.  相似文献
