The up-regulation of secondary metabolic pathways following herbivore attack and the subsequent reduction in herbivore performance have been identified in numerous woody plant species. Eucalypts constitutively express many secondary metabolites in the leaves, including terpenes and formylated phloroglucinol compounds (FPCs). We used clonal ramets from six clones of Eucalyptus grandis and two clones of E. grandis x camaldulensis to determine if methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment could induce changes in the foliar concentrations of either of these groups of compounds. We also used bioassays to determine if any changes in the performance of larvae of Paropsis atomaria, a chrysomelid leaf beetle, could be detected in treated ramets versus the untreated controls, thus indicating whether MeJA induced the up-regulation of defences other than terpenes or FPCs. We found no significant effects of MeJA treatment on either the foliar concentrations of terpenes and FPCs or on herbivore performance. We did, however, detect dramatic differences in larval performance between Eucalyptus clones, thereby demonstrating large variations in the levels of constitutive defence. Larval feeding on clones resistant to P. atomaria resulted in high first instar mortality and disruption of normal gregarious feeding behaviour in surviving larvae. Histological examination of larvae feeding on a resistant clone revealed damage to the midgut consistent with the action of a toxin. These findings concur with mounting evidence that most evergreen perennial plants lack foliar-induced defences and suggest that constitutively expressed secondary metabolites other than those commonly examined in studies of interactions between insect herbivores and Eucalyptus may be important in plant defence.  相似文献

1 Selection can favour herbivores that choose host plants benefitting their offspring either by enhancing growth rates or by increasing larval defences against native predators. For exotic predator species that feed on herbivores, their success with invading new habitats may depend upon overcoming defences used by native prey. Whether exotic predators can alter herbivore host choice has remained unexamined. Therefore, we compared the efficacy of larval defence by Chrysomela knabi (a native beetle species) that had fed on two native willow hosts: Salix sericea (a phenolic glycoside (PG)-rich species) and Salix eriocephala (a PG-poor species), when attacked by exotic generalist predators. In addition, the preference and performance of C. knabi on S. sericea and S. eriocephala was examined.
2  Chrysomela knabi preferred and performed better on S. sericea. In a common garden, adult C. knabi were nine-fold more common and oviposited five-fold more frequently on S. sericea than on S. eriocephala . In the laboratory, adult feeding preference on leaf discs and survival rates of larvae were both greater on S. sericea , and time to pupation was shorter.
3  Chrysomela knabi larvae produced significantly more salicylaldehyde when fed S. sericea leaves than when fed S. eriocephala leaves. Additionally, those larvae with greater salicylaldehyde had reduced predation by two exotic generalist predators, Harmonia axyridis larvae and juvenile Tenodera aridifolia sinensis .
4 The results obtained in the present study suggest that selection favoured the preference of C. knabi for PG-rich willow plants because larvae grew and survived better and that selection by common exotic generalist predators would reinforce this preference.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Planting of species mixtures is a strategy for the non‐chemical management of willow beetles in short‐rotation coppice willows. However, the relatively susceptible Salix viminalis genotypes and their hybrids dominate current high‐yielding willows. Interactions between Phratora vulgatissima and different genotypes of S. viminalis were examined under laboratory conditions to determine if these genotypes exhibit genetic differences in susceptibility to willow beetle damage. 2 Seven S. viminalis genotypes and four hybrids were tested for the feeding preference of adult P. vulgatissima, larval performance and within‐season plant response to manual defoliation (50% and 75%). 3 The feeding preference of adult beetles, the growth rate of larvae, and the weight at 33 days of larvae and pupae differed significantly between genotypes. Genotypes also differed significantly in their height and weight responses to mechanical defoliation. Two genotypes were taller, with longer internodes, after defoliation than were undamaged plants. Two hybrids and their S. viminalis parent showed no significant reduction in final dry weight between 0% and 50% defoliation treatments. 4 Susceptibility of genotypes to adult feeding was not correlated with their tolerance to defoliation in terms of weight or height responses; however, larval growth rate on genotypes was negatively correlated both with final height and number of leaves after 75% defoliation and with the susceptibility of genotype to adult feeding. 5 Salix viminalis showed genetic differences for all parameters tested. This suggests that the planting of a mixture of these genotypes would contain genetic differences with respect to host susceptibility to P. vulgatissima. Some parameters showed similarities between a hybrid and its parent, whereas others showed differences between siblings. This offers potential for effective breeding of desirable traits.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. During range expansions of phytophagous insects, secondary or novel hosts may allow colonisation of areas without primary hosts. Because plant species often differ in their relative attractiveness and suitability for insects, insect preference for, and performance on, these hosts can determine recruitment potential in the current and future expansion areas.
2. This study explores the relative roles of female preference and larval performance in an important pine defoliator, Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera, Notodontidae), which colonises three Pinus species at its current range margin in the Italian Alps: P. nigra (primary host), P. sylvestris (secondary host), and P. mugo (novel host).
3. Host use patterns in multiple insect populations were studied through choice and no-choice oviposition experiments in cages, field surveys of mixed stands, and laboratory and field monitoring of larval growth and mortality. It was predicted that a specific life-history trait – time limitation of short-lived females to lay a single batch of eggs – would act as a component of female performance, and lead to similar rates of host acceptance in no-choice settings.
4. In the choice experiment, P. nigra was accepted the most frequently while P. sylvestris was accepted the least frequently, confirming nest density patterns in the field. Contrary to prediction, females remained discriminating in no-choice settings in spite of time limitation. In contrast, relative growth rate (RGR) and mortality of larvae did not differ significantly among the three hosts, highlighting a discrepancy between female preference and larval performance.
5. Recruitment potential of T. pityocampa in future expansion into stands of P. sylvestris and P. mugo is evaluated by combining host quality, conservatism in oviposition behaviour, habitat suitability, and the opportunity for local adaptation.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Eucalyptus globulus Labill. exhibited consistent intraspecific variation in oviposition choice by Mnesampela privata (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) in field surveys of host plants that had been designated, based on the prior season's defoliation levels, as resistant or susceptible to M. privata. At both field sites significantly fewer egg batches were found on resistant compared to susceptible trees. 2 In cage bioassays we demonstrated a significant oviposition preference by M. privata, with over two‐fold greater number of egg batches laid on foliage sprigs from susceptible compared to resistant trees. Despite differences in tree oviposition choice, we found no evidence in the field or the laboratory of adult females adjusting egg batch size in accordance to oviposition preference. 3 Caged larval survival, development times and pupal weight did not vary significantly between resistant and susceptible trees. Similarly, in a laboratory feeding experiment, neonates utilized resistant and susceptible foliage equally. 4 Larval mortality in the field attributed to natural enemies did not vary significantly between resistant and susceptible trees, nor did the percentage of Telenomus sp. parasitism of M. privata eggs within a batch and batches per tree. 5 Failure to associate either larval performance or natural enemy efficacy with the observed intraspecific variation in E. globulus susceptibility to M. privata oviposition indicates that some other unidentified factors drive the evolution of host selection for oviposition.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. In California, early instar larvae of the pipevine swallowtail ( Battus philenor ) develop at an accelerated rate when feeding in large groups compared with small groups due to a plant-mediated response to feeding group size. Larvae benefit from accelerated growth because the time larvae remain in early stages, where mortality is highest, is reduced. Occasionally, multiple clutches are laid on the same plant stem. Clutch size modification by females ovipositing on plant with previously laid clutches and the effect of kinship and group size on larval behaviour was examined. The direct and indirect interactions between clutches were investigated to determine if group size and time between clutch establishment affects the performance of early instar larvae.
2. Larger groups consume the young foliage more quickly and develop at an accelerated rate compared with smaller groups. Older foliage available to later clutches is an inferior food resource compared with younger foliage.
3. There was no evidence that females adjust clutch size in response to the presence of conspecific clutches.
4. Second groups of larvae readily joined previously established feeding groups. There were no observed behavioural differences between sibling and mixed-family groups.
5. The effect of a second group on the growth of the initial group was dependent on the size of both groups and the time interval between the arrival of the two groups.
6. Accelerated growth associated with larger feeding aggregations was absent when these groups were introduced to plants with previously established groups.
7. It is beneficial for ovipositing females to avoid plants with previously laid clutches because direct and indirect interactions with established clutches compromises larval performance.  相似文献

The relationship between preference and performance was studied under laboratory conditions for larvae and adult females of Leptinotarsa undecimlineata (Stål) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Leptinotarsa undecimlineata feeds exclusively on Solanum lanceolatum L. (Solanaceae) in the centre of Veracruz, Mexico. A common sympatric species, Solanum myriacanthum Dunal, is not used as host. We conducted a series of laboratory experiments to detect reasons for the exclusive use of one host plant. Leptinotarsa undecimlineata larvae were reared under laboratory conditions on both plant species, Solanum lanceolatum and S. myriacanthum . Length of larval stages, pupal weight, and percent adult eclosion were compared, and larval preference for both Solanum species was tested. Upon eclosion, adult females were exposed to each of the plants, and the effect of larval diet on adult preference was determined. Oviposition on both Solanum species was observed in no-choice tests. Larvae showed no significant preferences for either plant species. Pupal weight, however, was significantly higher on S. lanceolatum . Female beetles significantly preferred S. lanceolatum leaves, and no effect of preimaginal conditioning was found. Females reproduced in lower numbers after feeding on S. myriacanthum , oviposition initiated later, and females laid fewer eggs than females fed with S. lanceolatum . No female accepted S. myriacanthum for oviposition. Results obtained suggest that the potential host breadth of L. undecimlineata is broader in larvae than in female beetles.  相似文献

1 Silicon can increase the resistance of plants to attack by herbivorous insects. The present study aimed to determine the effect of silicon and cultivar on mandibular wear in larvae of the sugarcane stalk borer Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).
2 Four sugarcane cultivars, resistant (N21, N33) and susceptible (N11, N26) to E. saccharina were grown in a pot trial in silicon deficient river sand, with (Si+) and without (Si−) calcium silicate. Individual third-instar larvae were confined on the sugarcane stalk at three known feeding sites (leaf bud, root band and internode) and left to feed for 21 days.
3  Eldana saccharina larval heads were mounted on stubs, with the mandibles oriented horizontally and photographed under a scanning electron microscope. Mandibular wear was measured from the digital images using a quantitative method.
4 Although there was a trend for increased wear in larvae that developed on Si+ cane, no significant effect of silicon, cultivar or site on mandibular wear of E. saccharina was shown.
5 This is the first study to accurately and quantitatively measure the mandibular wear of an insect fed on Si+ plants.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Western tent caterpillars hatch in the early spring when temperatures are cool and variable. They compensate for sub-optimal air temperatures by basking in the sun.
2. Tent caterpillars have cyclic population dynamics and infection by nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) often occurs in populations at high density.
3. To determine whether climatic variation might influence viral infection, the environmental determinants of larval body temperature and the effects of temperature on growth and development rates and larval susceptibility to NPV were examined.
4. In the field, larval body temperature was determined by ambient temperature, irradiance, and larval stage. The relationship between larval body temperature and ambient temperature was curvilinear, a property consistent with, but not necessarily limited to, behaviourally thermoregulating organisms.
5. Larvae were reared at seven temperatures between 18 and 36 °C. Larval growth and development increased linearly with temperature to 30 °C, increased at a lower rate to 33 °C, then decreased to 36 °C. Pupal weights were highest for larvae reared between 27 and 30 °C.
6. The pathogenicity (LD50) of NPV was not influenced by temperature, but the time to death of infected larvae declined asymptotically as temperature increased.
7. Taking into account larval growth, the theoretical yield of the virus increased significantly between 18 and 21 °C then decreased slightly as temperatures increased to 36 °C.
8. Control and infected larvae showed no difference in temperature preference on a thermal gradient. The modes of temperature preference were similar to those for optimal growth and asymptotic body temperatures measured in the field on sunny days.
9. Warmer temperatures attained by basking may increase the number of infection cycles in sunny springs but do not protect larvae from viral infection.  相似文献

1. The great spruce bark beetle Dendroctonus micans is a primary pest of spruce in Europe. It is unusual among Eurasian scolytids in that apparently healthy trees are attacked by solitary adults, but larvae feed en masse , in response to a larval aggregation pheromone.
2. The effect of brood size on larval growth was determined in experiments on detached bark, logs and living trees. A positive relationship was found between brood size and larval growth in experiments started with either eggs or larvae up to fifth instar. The relationship appeared to be independent of the effects of both preformed and induced defences in bark.
3. No evidence was found to support the hypothesis that larvae feeding in groups spend a greater proportion of time feeding. Addition of resin to egg chambers in detached bark pieces resulted in high mortality of first-instar larvae. A possible role for larval aggregation in minimizing the effects of host defences is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract Helicoverpa armigera oviposition preference for, and larval development on sorghum hybrids with differing resistance to sorghum midge, Stenodiplosis sorghicola , were investigated. When H. armigera larvae were fed seed of resistant and susceptible hybrids in the laboratory there were no differences in larval and pupal sizes or the rate of development. The same result was recorded when larvae fed on panicles on plants in a glasshouse. On some sampling occasions, significantly more eggs were laid on panicles of resistant hybrids in the field. This occurred when plants were in plots and also in a mixed planting. Midge-resistance status did not affect levels of egg parasitism. In a field study using recombinant inbred lines between a midge-resistant and a midge-susceptible line, no relationship was found between level of resistance and oviposition of H. armigera . We conclude that, although midge-resistant hybrids are sometimes preferred for oviposition by H. armigera, the resistance per se does not determine this preference. Egg survival, larval survival, development and resultant damage are not significantly affected by the midge-resistance status of the host.  相似文献

1. Hopkins' host selection principle (HSP) states that insects should prefer foliage from their rearing host plant over that of an alternative host. 2. The current study tested whether eastern spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), that were laid and developed on, respectively, resistant and susceptible white spruce Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, showed differences in their feeding and oviposition preferences for these two hosts. 3. The data revealed that previous experience of spruce budworm on a host tree type does not influence the host acceptance and feeding behaviour of later larval stages. However, adult budworm reared on resistant white spruce needles preferentially selected susceptible white spruce needles as the host for their progeny, whereas those reared on susceptible needles showed no preference. 4. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of an insect showing an oviposition preference for the non‐rearing host plant. This would tend to increase mixing between insects from susceptible and resistant trees. The present results thus argue against Hopkins' HSP and suggest that learned aversion to resistant foliage experienced by larvae is carried into the adult stage.  相似文献

1 The native range of the Siberian moth extends from the Pacific Ocean (Russian Far East, Japan and Northern Korea) across Siberia, Northern China and Mongolia to the Ural Mountains. At the beginning of the 21st Century, this species was documented west of the Ural Mountains in the Republic of Mari El, indicating range extension toward the west.
2 The Siberian moth has recently been suggested for regulation as a quarantine pest for European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization member countries. However, no specific report on European host plants for this pest has been published so far.
3 In the present study, larval host plant choice and performance was tested for the first time on coniferous tree species that are widely distributed and of commercial value in Europe.
4 Based on dual-choice tests on neonates and mortality, developmental duration and relative growth rates of the first- to sixth-instar larvae, we found European larch Larix decidua to be the most suitable host for the moth larvae, whereas European black pine Pinus nigra and Scots pine Pinus sylvestris were the poorest hosts. The remaining conifer species tested, European silver fir Abies alba , Nordmann fir Abies nordmanniana , and Norway spruce Picea abies , were intermediate host plants. Douglas-fir Pseudotsuga menziesii , originating from North America, was chosen by the larvae to the same extend as European larch, and was also highly suitable for larval development.
5 If the moth is introduced to European countries, it will become damaging in stands of European larch and Douglas-fir, mixed stands of fir and spruce; however, it will be less damaging in forests dominated by two-needle pines.
6 We predict that Dendrolimus superans sibiricus will be able to survive and develop on the main European coniferous tree species, including non-native coniferous tree species, resulting in severe damage to large areas of forests.  相似文献

Abstract 1. The ways of using host plants were compared among the three Athalia sawflies [ A. japonica (Klug), A. rosae ruficornis Jakovlev, and A. infumata (Marlatt)] feeding on crucifers in Japan to determine whether host specialisation can explain the difference in their life-history traits. The occurrence of their larvae was examined on each crucifer species in the field, and the suitability of each crucifer species for the three successive steps of host use by the sawflies was evaluated: microhabitat selection by adult females, female oviposition, and larval growth.
2. There were 11 species of crucifer in the study area, and A. japonica , A. rosae , and A. infumata used nine, seven, and eight species respectively. Thus, sawfly host ranges overlapped.
3. Adult females of A. japonica , A. rosae , and A. infumata preferred shady clumps of crucifers, sunny clumps of crucifers, and disturbed areas respectively.
4. Unsuitable hosts for larval performance such as Brassica oleracea and Arabis plants were eliminated from the host ranges of the three sawflies.
5. Once they chose microhabitats, the suitability of each host plant for female oviposition and larval growth was similar.
6. Because of the divergent preferences for microhabitats, the host plants that were suitable for all the three steps were restricted to different sets of plants among the sawflies: Cardamine for A. japonica , cultivated crucifers ( Raphanus and Brassica ) for A. rosae , and Rorippa for A. infumata . These plants could be recognised as the respective primary host plants.
7. The spatio-temporal distributions of primary hosts were consistent with and explained the pattern of diapause and migration of each sawfly, suggesting that host specialisation caused their life-history traits to differentiate.  相似文献

Nutrient composition, secondary plant substances and other host quality characteristics govern resistance and influence herbivore feeding. The current study was carried out to compare aspects of feeding behaviour and food utilization of banana weevil (Germar) (Coleptera: Curculionidae) larvae feeding on banana cultivars with different levels of resistance. In the first study, penetration times of larvae into tissue of seven banana cultivars (two susceptible, three intermediate and four resistant) were compared. Day‐old larvae were placed on corm or pseudostem tissue of these cultivars and time taken to penetrate the tissue was recorded. Larvae generally took longer to tunnel into resistant cultivars, although Yangambi Km5 (resistant) did not fit this pattern. In the second set of studies, food consumption and growth of larvae were compared on cultivars: (i) Kisubi (resistant) vs. Atwalira (susceptible); and (ii) Mbwazirume (intermediate) vs. Kayinja (resistant). Day‐old larvae were offered weighed pieces of corm that were changed every 4–7 days. At each corm change, weights of the larvae, corms and frass were measured. Changes in corm and larval weight were calculated to determine larval growth and amount of tissue consumed. Larvae feeding on resistant cultivars had lower consumption and growth rates and longer developmental duration. It was concluded that low food consumption rates contribute to delayed development of larvae feeding on resistant cultivars. Differences between resistant and susceptible cultivars in food utilization may be of limited consequence for the cultivars tested. This is one step in identifying the factors influencing weevil development rates in cultivars of different resistance levels. If these factors are identified, they can be targeted in breeding for resistance.  相似文献

Previous experience on host plants can modify insect feeding behavior. Because insect habituation and induction of preference to host plants are variable across species of plants and insects, it is necessary to investigate each insect-plant interaction to determine whether this phenomenon occurs or not in the system. In this study we investigated the potential occurrence of habituation and induction of preference in fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda to soybean genotypes. Neonate FAW larvae reared on artificial diet were divided into four treatment groups and fed for one generation with either the resistant soybeans PI 227687 or IAC 100 or the susceptible soybeans BRS Valiosa RR or IGRA RA 626 RR. Biological parameters of FAW were recorded. Eggs obtained from FAW of each genotype group were separated, and the newly hatched larvae were fed on the same genotypes experienced by their parents for additional 8 days. FAW larval preference and leaf area consumed were evaluated in choice feeding assays with the four soybean genotypes within a 24-h period. Genotypes PI 227687 and IAC 100 negatively affected FAW development, demonstrating they are FAW-resistant. FAW larvae exposed to both resistant genotypes consumed more foliage of genotype IGRA RA 626 RR in the choice assays, whereas larvae reared on both susceptible genotypes did not show any preference. From our preliminary study, FAW does not show habituation and induction of preference toward the experienced soybean genotypes. The importance of our findings to host plant resistance and insect-plant biology fields is discussed.  相似文献

1. The population dynamics of an introduced population of Epilachna niponica (Lewis) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) was investigated for a 7-year period following its introduction to a site outside of its natural range. A population from Asiu Experimental Forest was introduced to Kyoto University Botanical Garden, 10 km south of its natural distribution.
2. Arthropod predation was much lower in the introduced than in the source population. As a result of the lower predation in the Botanical Garden, larvae reached densities five times higher than in the Asiu Forest and host plants were frequently defoliated. Food shortage caused larval deaths from starvation and increased dispersal.
3. The density of the introduced population was much more variable than that of the source population. The variation in population density in both the introduced and source populations is limited by density-dependent reduction in fecundity and female survival. However, variation in the introduced population's density was increased due to host plant defoliation that resulted in overcompensating density-dependent mortality. In years with high larval density plants were defoliated and this increased adult mortality during the prehibernation period. Besides, the density-dependent regulatory mechanisms that produce population stability were weaker in the introduced population than in the source population.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Introduced insects often incorporate native plants into their diets and might be expected to show a predilection for novel hosts that are phylogenetically related to their normal hosts. The lily leaf beetle, Lilioceris lilii (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is an introduced pest of cultivated lilies. Oviposition behaviour, larval behaviour, and development of L. lilii was examined on a range of potential host plants, as well as on the normal host, Asiatic hybrid lilies Lilium sp.
2. Neonate larval feeding behaviour was quantified on 15 food plant species: 10 from the Liliales, three from the Asparagales and two eudicots. Larvae fed plants closely related to the genus Lilium were more likely to initiate feeding, less likely to abandon their food leaf, and consumed more leaf area.
3. In no-choice tests, females oviposited on the novel hosts Lilium philadelphicum , Medeola virginiana , Clintonia borealis , Streptopus amplexifolius , and Polygonatum biflorum ; however, all but L. philadelphicum received very few eggs. Non- Lilium novel hosts were not used for oviposition when presented along with Asiatic lilies in choice tests.
4. A single individual was reared to the adult stage on the novel host S. amplexifolius . Several larvae survived to the pupal stage on M. virginiana , although no adults emerged from those pupae. Larvae reared on the native wood lily L. philadelphicum performed equally well or better than on the Asiatic cultivar.
5. Our results indicate that the lily leaf beetle poses a threat to native Liliaceae. Several native Lilium species, including L. philadelphicum , are threatened or endangered in certain jurisdictions throughout their range; these species should be monitored closely for colonisation by the beetle.  相似文献

Abstract .1. Field studies were made of the benefits and costs of two feeding strategies in the genus Maculinea, whose final-instar larvae parasitise Myrmica ant colonies. Maculinea arion is an obligate predator of ant brood, whereas M. rebeli and M. alcon mimic ant larvae and are fed (like cuckoos) directly by the workers.
2. Samples of > 1500 Myrmica nests confirmed laboratory-based predictions that, by feeding at a lower trophic level, many (4.7-fold) more individuals of M. rebeli and M. alcon are supported per ant colony than M. arion.
3. Because of their efficient feeding, cuckoo species often occupied sites where their phytophagous early larval populations coincided to only a small extent (> 10%) with host Myrmica colonies, whereas all sites supporting M. arion had 50–100% of the phytophagous stages within foraging range of the host Myrmica species.
4. Greater host-specificity was identified as another consequence of cuckoo-feeding. The ecological cost of this is discussed .
5. The feeding of other Maculinea species had not been fully described: the data suggest that M. nausithous is a predator of ant brood and confirm that M. teleius is predacious .  相似文献

In a laboratory experiment, the influence of host plant diversity and food quality, in terms of nitrogen content, on the larval survival of two oligophagous bug species (Heteroptera, Miridae: Leptopterna dolobrata L., Notostira erratica L.) was investigated. Both species are strictly phytophagous and capable of feeding on a wide range of grass species. Moreover, they typically change their host plants during ontogenesis; it has been suggested that this behaviour is a response to the changing protein content of the hosts.
2. To investigate the importance of host plant diversity for these insects, the development of insects reared on grass monocultures was compared with that on mixtures of four grass species. In addition, the host grasses were grown under two nitrogen regimes to test whether nitrogen content is the key factor determining host plant switching.
3. Both species had a significantly higher survival rate when feeding on several host plants but only L. dolobrata showed a significant response to food nitrogen content. Furthermore, there was no correlation between the nitrogen content of the host plants and the survival rate of N. erratica larvae.
4. The study suggests that at least some Stenodemini need a variety of host plants during larval development but that the level of host plant nitrogen is not the main factor responsible for the observed diversity effect.  相似文献
