The phytoplankton taxonomic composition of the subsurface chlorophyllmaximum layer (SCM) was compared with that of the surface layerin July, September and November 1979 in the western North PacificOcean. Besides the use of chemical fixatives for preservablephytoplankton, serial dilution culture method was employed fornon-preservable flagellates and monads, i.e., fragile forms. The SCM was characterized by a high species diversity of preservablephytoplankton and by the numerical dominance of fragile forms.Among the fragile forms, Micromonas and Ochromonas were dominant. This dominance is consistent with their viability at low lightintensity. Cluster analysis revealed that, for blue-green algae, coccolithophorids, silicoflagellates and diatoms, a marked differenceexisted in species assemblages between the SCM and the surfacebut there was no distinct difference in dinoflagellate assemblages. The difference between both layers is discussed, as relatedto the mechanisms of formation of the SCM. 1Present address: Nodai Research Institute, Tokyo Universityof Agriculture, 1-1-1, Sakuragaoka, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo 156,Japan.  相似文献

Trophic interactions between bacteria, viruses, and protozoan predators play crucial roles in structuring aquatic microbial communities and regulating microbe-mediated ecosystem functions (biogeochemical processes). In this microbial food web, protozoan predators and viruses share bacteria as a common resource, and protozoan predators can kill viruses [intraguild predation (IGP)] and vice versa, even though these latter processes are probably of less importance. However, protozoan predators (IG predator) and viruses (IG prey) generally occur together in various environments, and this cannot be fully explained by the classic IGP models. In addition, controlled experiments have often demonstrated that protozoan predators have apparently positive effects on viral activity. These surprising patterns can be explained by indirect interactions between them via induced trait changes in bacterial assemblages, which can be compared with trait-mediated indirect interactions (TMIIs) in terrestrial plant–insect systems. Here, we review some trait changes in bacterial assemblages that may positively affect the activities and abundance of viruses. It has been suggested that in bacterial assemblages, protozoan predation may enhance growth conditions for individual bacteria and induce both phenotypic trait changes at the individual (e.g., filament-forming bacteria) and group level as a result of changes in bacterial community composition (e.g., species dominance). We discuss the specificities of aquatic microbial systems and attempt find functional similarities between aquatic microbial systems and terrestrial plant–insect systems with regard to TMII function.  相似文献

Little is known about the flow of chemical information fromhigher to lower levels within the animal food chain. However, this information may determine the behavior and distributionof many animals (e.g., that of potential prey) when exposedto direct and indirect cues of predation risk. We used herbivorousspider mites, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Tetranychidae) as amodel to examine the foraging and oviposition decisions thatprey make when exposed to these cues. We conducted laboratorytests to determine if the previous presence of predators (directcues) on leaf discs or the presence of injured conspecifics(indirect cues) alters the distribution of adults and eggs ofT. urticae. When given a choice, after 24 h, fewer adults and eggswere found on leaf discs that had previously contained specialistspider mite predators, Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot (Phytoseiidae),than on discs unexposed to predators. Also, more T. urticaeemigrated from predator-exposed discs than from unexposed discs orfrom those that had previously contained nonpredatory mites(Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Acaridae). Finally, fewer T. urticaeforaged and laid eggs on predator-exposed discs or on thosewith artificially damaged conspecifics (eggs or dead adults)than on discs with intact conspecifics. Tetranychus urticaeprobably recognizes infochemicals (kairomones) from its predatorsor cues from injured spider mites and consequently avoids feedingor ovipositing in areas exposed to these cues. Recognition and avoidanceof kairomones from specialist predators by this prey are likelyto be hereditary, but avoidance of injured conspecifics maybe an adaptation to avoid predators that are not inherentlyrecognized. We discuss the behavioral and ecological implicationsof our findings.  相似文献

This study examines the spatial distribution and size structureof phytoplankton biomass and productivity in relation to thevertical structrure of the Andaman Sea (northeastern IndianOcean). This region was characterized by low concentrationsof nutrients and high levels of insolation. Nitrogen availabilityappeared to control overall productivity with nitrate-based‘new’ production accounting for 8–24% of thetotal primary production. Euphotic column chlorophyll (chl a)averaged 52.5 mg m–2 of which a major portion was locatedas a subsurface chl a maximum (SCM) at  相似文献

‘Physiological maturity’, i.e. the time when seedsreach their maximum dry weight during development, occurredwhen maturation drying on the parent plant in the field hadreduced seed moisture content to approximately 60 per cent infaba bean (Vicia faba L.), lentil (Lens culinaris Medic.), chickpea(Cicer arietinum L.), white lupin (Lupinus albus L.), soya bean(Glycine max [L.] Merr.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.) The onsetof desiccation-tolerance, i.e. the ability of seeds to germinatefollowing harvest and rapid artificial drying, coincided withphysiological maturity, except in pea where it occurred a littleearlier at about 70 per cent moisture content. Maximum seedquality as determined by maximum viability, minimum seedlingabnormalities and maximum seedling size occurred in pea, chickpeaand lupin when seeds were harvested for rapid drying at physiologicalmaturity; but for maximum seed quality in the other speciesmaturation drying had to proceed further - to about 45 per centmoisture content in soya bean and to about 30 per cent moisturecontent in lentil and faba bean seed crops. Much of this variationamongst the six species, however, was due to differences inthe variation in maturity within each seed crop. Results forindividual pods showed that peak maturity, i.e. maximum seedquality following harvest and rapid artificial drying, was achievedin all six species once maturation drying had reduced the moisturecontent of the seeds to 45–50 per cent. In pea, faba beanand soya bean there was a substantial decline in viability andan increase in seedling abnormalities when harvest was delayedbeyond the optimal moisture content for harvest.  相似文献

An experimental study using microcosms was conducted in a SouthAmerican wetland, Lower Paraná River Basin (Argentina),to analyse the structure of the components of the microbialplankton community and the influence of the light deficiencydue to floating macrophytes on this community. Two experimentswere run under different light conditions; the decrease of thelight penetration due to floating macrophytes was simulatedusing different nylon mesh covers that resembled natural conditionsin the lake. These studies revealed that the light deficiencyfavoured the replacement of obligate autotrophs by mixotrophicand heterotrophic organisms. Abundances of strictly autotrophicalgae along the experiments responded to the light gradient, being maximum in the flasks without cover. Heterotrophic nanoflagellates(HNF) and ciliates increased in the microcosms, probably favouredby the high food availability (picoplankton) and the lack oftheir predators (zooplankton). The increase of ciliates washigher in the microcosms with more light. In the first experiment, the picoplankton fraction strongly decreased after 24 h in theflasks that included all their potential predators, thus suggestinga grazing pressure on this fraction. Grazing experiments performedwith fluorescent-labelled bacteria (FLB) revealed that two Cryptomonasspecies, which are frequent in the lake (Cryptomonas erosa andCryptomonas marssonii), can ingest bacteria.  相似文献

Calanoid copepods possess remarkable abilities to detect andescape from hydrodynamic disturbances, such as those createdby approaching predators. At the same time, a number of studiesin coastal ecosystems have suggested that gelatinous predators, including medusae in the Class Scyphozoa, exert top-down controlon copepod populations. Although prey escape behavior playsa critical role in predation models, we have relatively littleempirical data on how copepods respond to encounters with scyphomedusae. In this study, I used video to quantify encounter rates andescape behaviors of the copepod Acartia hudsonica during interactionswith two scyphomedusae, Aurelia aurita and Cyanea sp., in twoflow regimes. Escapes were complex, variable and effective.Fewer than 1% of encounters resulted in ingestion. Typically,A.hudsonica avoided contact by responding when predators remainedseveral body lengths (4 to 10 mm) distant and stringing togethermany escape jumps at submaximum velocities (33 to 59 mm s–1).In addition, copepodite stages behaved passively—or failedto respond—following encounters with medusae more oftenthan did adults. Because escape behavior exhibited by A.hudsonicawas so variable, it is unlikely that medusae capture copepodsusing a single, quantifiable mechanism. A range of responseswithin populations and individuals may be the best strategyfor zooplankton faced with strong predation pressure from avariety of predators.  相似文献

How To Be a Predator   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
This paper discusses what would appear to be the optimal strategyof a predator given two alternative objectives: (1) maximumyield commensurate with the long-term maintenance of the preyspecies, and (2) extinction of the prey species. The problemis examined in terms of past research on Daphnia and Hydra, and takes into account estimates of ecological efficiency, populationefficiency, and growth efficiency based on many laboratory experiments. It is shown that there may be distinct differences in the effectsof removing different kinds of individuals from a prey population. The optimal system for a predator wishing to insure the continuedavailability of its prey is to take animals which are aboutto die anyway, i.e., to alter the natural pattern of mortalityas little as possible. It is concluded, with some reservations, that predators in nature generally act in this manner. Conversely,if one's intent is to exterminate a prey species (e.g., an objectionablepest), the animals removed should be those which natural predatorsdo not select.  相似文献

A genual pattern of photophobic responses has been observedwhich differs for calanoid copepods from freshwater, estuarineand oceanic environments. Using a video-computer system formotion analysis, the photophobic responses of light and darkadapted calanoid copepods were compared. Dark-adapted copepodswere exposed to 600 ms flashes of dim blue light at 5 s intervalswhich simulated the flashes of biolumines-cent marine zooplankton.Light-adapted copepods were exposed to 600 ms intervals of darknessat 5 s intervals to simulate the shadows of organisms passingoverhead. Four species of coastal marine copepods (Acartia hudsonica,Centropages hamatus, Pseudocalanus minutus and Temora longicornis)all showed photophobic responses to both flashes and shadows. These responses may have adaptive value to the copepods sincethey live in an environment with predators that are bioluminescentat night and cast shadows on their prey during the day (e.g.ctenophores and cnidarian medusae). Two species of oceanic copepods(Euchaeta marina, Pleuromamma abdominalis) showed strong photophobicresponses to flashes but no response to shadows. This may correspondto the abundance of bioluminescent predators on copepods inthe oceanic environment (fish, ctenophores, siphonophores, etc.)and their lack of exposure to the shadows of predators, sinceboth these species are rarely found in the euphoric zone duringthe day. Two species of freshwater copepods (Diaptomus sanguineus,Epishwa massachusettsensis) showed no similar photophobic responseto flashes of light. This lack of startle response may relateto the lack of bioluminescence in the freshwater environment.Freshwater copepods showed a weak photophobic response to shadows. The adaptive value of this behavior is unclear, however, sincethe responses seem to be too weak to function for escape, andthe dominant predators large enough to cast shadows (fish) tendto approach their prey laterally. 1Present address: Marine Science Institute, University of Texasat Austin, Port Aransas, TX 78373–1267, USA  相似文献

A procedure was developed to estimate the direct grazing impacton free-living heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF). Culturedflagellates were labelled by feeding on brightly fluorescingbacteria (FLB) and then offered as indirectly fluorescentlylabelled flagellates (IFLF) to potential predators of HNF. Thenumber of FLB in the predators' food vacuoles could be convertedinto IFLF uptake and consumption of HNF. This new techniquewas used to study the HNF-ciliate relationship in the pelagiczone of Lake Constance. Three groups of ciliates were detectedas HNF grazers: small representatives of the genus Strobilidium.a small Haltena-like ciliate (probably Halteria grandinella)and a Codonella sp. Tintinnidium sp. group The ingestion ofHNF by these groups of ciliates ranged between 3 and 15, 3 and39, and 3 and 7 HNF ciliate–1 h–1; respectively. The IFLF method allows the direct determination of ingestedflagellate prey in the food vacuoles of their predators. Becauseindigenous living prey organisms were used, tracer discriminationcan be reduced.  相似文献

Daphnia may respond with an array of anti-predator defences(behavioural, morphological and life history) to a chemicalcue (kairomone) exuded by its predators: fish and Chaoborus.Given the wide array of potential responses, it is an interestingquestion whether anti-predator defences are coupled or independentof each other. Since anti-predator responses are costly andeven possessing the genetic information to respond to a certainpredator might involve a cost, clones may only react to predatorsthey co-occur with in nature. In this study, we provide evidencefor an uncoupling of responses by Daphnia pulex in several anti-predatordefences against Chaoborus. We were unable to detect a correlationbetween behavioural (migration), morphological (neck-spine induction)and life history [growth rate, neonate size and size at firstreproduction (SFR)] responses. Furthermore, anti-predator responsesdid not always comply with what is commonly believed. We foundthat Daphnia clones can migrate up or down when exposed to fishor Chaoborus kairomone and that population growth rate, neonatesize and SFR can increase or decrease in response to Chaoboruskairomone. We also show patterns in anti-predator defences thatseem to relate to the habitat from which clones were derived.Daphnia clones that were collected in habitats with Chaoborusas the dominant predator tended to react strongly to Chaoboruskairomone by migrating upward and producing neck-spines. Themigration behaviour against fish kairomone in these clones wasoften an unexpected upward migration. The Daphnia clone thatco-existed with fish predators showed a downward migration inthe presence of fish as well as Chaoborus kairomone. Clonesthat had occurred with either both or no predators had mixedresponses. We sometimes found an upward migration in combinationwith smaller body size as a response to Chaoborus kairomone. This may be interpreted as a behavioural defence against Chaoborusand a life-history defence against fish. Daphnia seem not toexhibit defence behaviour against predators they do not co-occurwith. It might be costly for Daphnia to maintain genetic informationto respond to these predators and protect that information fromgenetic drift.  相似文献

We studied the planktonic food web in eutrophic Sau Reservoir (Catalonia, NE Spain). Along the longitudinal axis from the Ter River downstream to the dam, we characterized a microbial succession of food web dominance of bacteria‐HNF‐ciliates. The Ter River transports a large load of organic material into the reservoir, with a bacterial density of ∼9 · 106 large cells per ml. While at the first lacustrine station of the Reservoir HNF were the dominant bacterial consumers, at the others, an oligotrich ciliate, Halteria grandinella, was the main protozoan bacterivore. Most of the bacterial production in the reservoir epilimnion was consumed by grazing. The spatial succession of the reservoir microbial food webs was followed downstream by maximum densities of their potential predators among zoo‐plankters – rotifers, and early developmental stages of copepods.  相似文献

We used foraging trays to determine whether oldfield mice, Peromyscuspolionotus, altered foraging in response to direct cues of predationrisk (urine of native and nonnative predators) and indirectcues of predation risk (foraging microhabitat, precipitation, and moon illumination). The proportion of seeds remaining ineach tray (a measure of the giving-up density [GUD]) was usedto measure risk perceived by mice. Mice did not alter theirGUD when presented with cues of native predators (bobcats, Lynxrufus, and red foxes, Vulpes vulpes), recently introduced predators(coyotes, Canis latrans), nonnative predators (ocelots, Leoparduspardalis), a native herbivore (white-tailed deer, Odocoileusvirginianus), or a water control. Rather, GUD was related tomicrohabitat: rodents removed more seeds from foraging trayssheltered beneath vegetative cover compared with exposed traysoutside of cover. Rodents also removed more seeds during nightswith precipitation and when moon illumination was low. Our resultssuggest that P. polionotus used indirect cues rather than directcues to assess risk of vertebrate predation. Indirect cues maybe more reliable than are direct scent cues for estimating riskfrom multiple vertebrate predators that present the most riskin open environments.  相似文献

The predatory impact and the trophic role of the freshwaterjellyfish, Craspedacusta sowerbii, was studied using microcosmand enclosure experiments as well as a 3-year pond survey. Theresults showed a significant decrease of small herbivorous crustaceans,i.e. Bosmina longirostris and juvenile cyclopoid copepods, inthe medusa treatments of the microcosms and the enclosure experiments.Chlorophyll concentrations in the enclosure experiment weresignificantly increased in the medusa treatment, suggestingthat C. sowerbii may cause cascading effects in the food chain.A comparison of daily zooplankton losses during the pond surveycaused by medusae and fish (roach, Rutilus rutilus), and theirfood selectivities suggest food separation of these two predatorsand reveal a strong negative impact of medusae on the copepodpond community. In the case of a jellyfish bloom, our resultsshow that both food chains can co-occur in lakes because ofa weak interaction between these top predators, fish and jellyfish, with simultaneous impacts on the zooplankton structure.  相似文献

Slugs are known to be killed and consumed by a range of invertebrateand vertebrate predators in the field. Carabid beetles (Coleoptera:Carabidae) in particular are major natural enemies of slugs, and have been shown to be capable of controlling certain speciesin a crop environment. This paper reports experiments to investigatethe effects, on the carabid Pterostichus melanarius, of feedingon the milacid slug Tandonia budapestensis. The slugs provedto be toxic, 50% of the beetles dying within two days. Mortalityof beetles fed on two other species of slug, Deroceras reticulatumand Arion distinctus, was not significantly different from thatfor beetles fed upon a control prey (Calliphora vomitoria). These results represent the only known case of a European slugproving to be toxic to potential predators, and is one of avery small number of reported instances of possible toxicityamongst terrestrial gastropods. The possibility that the orangeline down the dorsal keel of T. budapestensis may act as warningcoloration to birds is discussed. (Received 4 December 1996; accepted 5 March 1997)  相似文献

The relative importance of genotype and explant, and their interactionsfor in vitro plant regeneration via both organogenesis and somaticembryogenesis in Solanum melongena (eggplant) has been studied.Hypocotyl, cotyledon and leaf explants of four commerciallygrown Indian cultivars, Pusa Purple Long, Long White Cluster,Pusa Kranti, and Pusa Purple Cluster were used in the study.A combination of benzyladen-ine (11.1 µM) and indoleaceticacid (2.9 µM) was found to be optimum for shoot regeneration.Naphthalene acetic acid induced embryogenesis in all the threeexplants; 32.2µM was optimum for hypocotyl explants while10.7µM yielded maximum number of somatic embryos fromcotyledon and leaf explants. Genotype, explant and genotype-explantinteraction had highly significant effects on both organogenesisand somatic embryogenesis with genotype exerting maximum effecton both these processes. Pusa Purple Long was found to be themost responsive genotype for regeneration of both adventitiousshoots and somatic embryos among the cultivars. Among the explants, hypocotyls yielded the maximum number of adventitious shootsfollowed by cotyledons and leaves. The embryogenic responseof leaves and cotyledons was, however, significantly higherthan that of hypocotyl explants. Significant differences formorphogenetic potential were also observed within a single explant(hypocotyl). There was a basipetal gradient for organogenesis(i.e. decrease in number of shoots from base to apex) whilethe terminal hypocotyl segments showed better embryogenic potentialthan the median segments. The goal of the research presented here was to examine phenotypic plasticity exhibited by three morphotypes of the common Caribbean sponge Anthosigmella varians (Duchassaing & Michelotti). We were interested in examining the biotic (and, to a lesser extent, abiotic) factors responsible for branch production in this species. We also tested the hypothesis that the skeleton may serve an antipredator function in this sponge, focusing on vertebrate fish predators (i.e., angelfish) in this work. In transplant and caging experiments, unprotected forma varians replicates were immediately consumed by angelfish, while caged replicates persisted on the reef for several months. These findings support the hypothesis that predators (and not wave energy) restrict forma varians to lagoonal habitats. Branch production was not observed in A. varians forma incrustans when sponges were protected from predators or placed in predator-free, low-wave-energy environments. It is not clear from our work whether forma incrustans is capable of producing branches (i.e., whether branch production is a plastic trait in this morph). Additional field experiments demonstrated that A. varians forma varians increased spicule concentrations, compared to uninjured sponges, in response to artificial predation events, and A. varians forma rigida reduced spicule concentrations, compared to uncaged controls, when protected from predators. These findings indicate that spicule concentration is a plastic morphological trait that can be induced by damage, and that A. varians may be able to reduce spicule concentrations when environmental conditions change (e.g., in the absence of predators). The potential significance of inducible defenses and structural anti-predator defenses in sponges is discussed in relation to recent work on sponge chemical defenses.  相似文献

Isolation from mammalian predators differentially affects two congeners   总被引:8,自引:2,他引:6
Evolutionary isolation from predators can profoundly influencethe morphology, physiology, and behavior of prey, but littleis known about how species respond to the loss of only someof their predators. We studied antipredator behavior of tammarwallabies (Macropus eugenii) and western gray kangaroos (Macropusfuliginosus) on Kangaroo Island (KI), South Australia, andat Tutanning Nature Reserve on the mainland of western Australia. Both species on KI have been isolated from native mammalian predators for several thousand years. On KI, wallabies (becauseof their size) are vulnerable to diurnal aerial predators. In contrast, on the mainland both species have been exposedcontinuously to native and introduced mammalian and avian predators. At both locations, wallabies modified the amount of time they allocated to vigilance and foraging in response to group size, whereas kangaroos did so only at the higher risk Tutanningsite. Both species modified overall time budgets (they werewarier at the higher risk site), and both species modifiedspace-use patterns as a function of risk. At the higher risk site, tammars were closer to cover, whereas kangaroos were,on average, farther from cover. We hypothesize that the presenceof a single predator, even if it is active at a different timeof day, may profoundly affect the way a species responds tothe loss of other predators by maintaining certain antipredatorbehaviors. Such an effect of ancestral predators may be expected as long as species encounter some predators.  相似文献

Recent experimental evidence in both marine and freshwater systemsindicates that predators can induce vertical migration behaviorin individual zooplankters, yet the specific cues by which zooplankterssense their predators appear to vary. In situ manipulation experimentswere carried out with enclosed populations of the marine planktoniccopepod Acartia hudsonica to re-examine the potential role ofchemical cues in the behavior of A.hudsonica, and to test explicitlyfor the role of mechanical or visual stimuli in triggering verticalmigration behavior in this species. Adult female copepods wereinduced to vertically migrate (descend) when exposed to fishmimics during the day, but no such response occurred when thecopepods were exposed to Fish mimics during the night. Moreover, copepods exhibited no changes in vertical distribution whenexposed to water which, having recently held a natural predator(the threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus), was presumedto be laden with predator-produced chemical exudates. Predator-mediatedmechanical or visual cues, or a hierarchy of both, are responsiblefor eliciting vertical migration behavior in adult female A.hudsonica.These results, together with those of other investigations demonstratingthe inducing role of chemical exudates, indicate that the stimulieliciting vertical migration in zooplankton can be expectedto vary between species.  相似文献

Predator-limited population growth of the copepod Pseudocalanus sp.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The impact of predators on population growth of Pseudocalanussp. was investigated in Dabob Bay, Washington. Mortality ofPseudocalanus sp. was determined from stage-specific survivorship, from seasonal changes in mortality rates of adult males andfemales and from incidence of injuries to adult copepods. Theprincipal predators of adult Pseudocalanus were identified asthe predatory copepod Euchaeta elongata, the omnivorous euphausiidEuphausia pacifica and the chaetognath Sagirta elegans. Predatorattack rates - and prey mortality rates - are highly density-dependentand thus sensitive to prey dispersion in the water column, particularlyto layering in the vertical plane. Predation rates by the threeprincipal predators exceeded 100% of the recruitment rate toadult Pseudocalanus sp. beginning in early summer, thus restrictingpopulation growth. Planktivorous fish predation (by adult three-spinestickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and juvenile chum salmon,Oncorhynchus keta) on Pseudocalanus sp. adults was estimatedto be two orders of magnitude lower than consumption rates bypredatory zooplankton, at a deep water station in July. Analysisof seasonal changes in prey ingested by Sagitta elegans revealedthat Pseudocalanus sp. was the major prey item of S. elegansin April (61.0% of prey) and in June (67.0% of prey), thereafterdeclining seasonally in importance. Predation by S. elegansvaried seasonally with changes in chaetognath stage structure, vertical distribution and diapause, not size structure alone.Although chaetognath recruitment and population growth appearto be directly coupled to the abundance of Pseudocalanus sp.,predation by S. elegans has little reciprocal impact on Pseudocalanussp. population growth; hence asymmetries may occur in the interaction of planktonic prey and predators.  相似文献
