Fossils of a marsupial mole (Marsupialia, Notoryctemorphia, Notoryctidae) are described from early Miocene deposits in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland, Australia. These represent the first unequivocal fossil record of the order Notoryctemorphia, the two living species of which are among the world's most specialized and bizarre mammals, but which are also convergent on certain fossorial placental mammals (most notably chrysochlorid golden moles). The fossil remains are genuinely 'transitional', documenting an intermediate stage in the acquisition of a number of specializations and showing that one of these-the dental morphology known as zalambdodonty-was acquired via a different evolutionary pathway than in placentals. They, thus, document a clear case of evolutionary convergence (rather than parallelism) between only distantly related and geographically isolated mammalian lineages-marsupial moles on the island continent of Australia and placental moles on most other, at least intermittently connected continents. In contrast to earlier presumptions about a relationship between the highly specialized body form of the blind, earless, burrowing marsupial moles and desert habitats, it is now clear that archaic burrowing marsupial moles were adapted to and probably originated in wet forest palaeoenvironments, preadapting them to movement through drier soils in the xeric environments of Australia that developed during the Neogene.  相似文献

Morphology of the middle ear of golden moles (Chrysochloridae)   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The middle ear structures of nine species of golden moles (family Chrysochloridae) were examined under the light microscope. Auditory structures of several of these species are described here for the first time in detail, the emphasis being on the ossicular apparatus. Confirming previous observations, some golden moles (e.g. Amblysomus species) have ossicles of a morphology typical of mammals, whereas others ( Chrysospalax , Chrysochloris , Cryptochloris and Eremitalpa species) have enormously hypertrophied mallei. Golden moles differ in the nature and extent of the interbullar connection, the shape of the tympanic membrane and that of the manubrium. The stapes has an unusual orientation, projecting dorsomedially from the incus. It has been proposed that hypertrophied ossicles in golden moles are adapted towards the detection of seismic vibrations. The functional morphology of the middle ear apparatus is reconsidered in this light, and it is proposed that adaptations towards low-frequency airborne hearing might have predisposed golden moles towards the evolution of seismic sensitivity through inertial bone conduction. The morphology of the middle ear apparatus sheds little light on the disputed ordinal position of the Chrysochloridae.  相似文献

Sugar complements were analysed in extracts from leaves of desiccation tolerant species in the angiosperm families Cyperaceae, Gesneriaceae, Liliaceae, Poaceae and Velloziaceae. Total sugar content was higher in live air-dry leaves of all desiccation tolerant species (except the grass Eragrostiella nardoides; 22 µmoles/g dw) than in the dead air-dry leaves of the desiccation sensitive grass Sporobolus pyramidalis (36 µmoles/g dw). Sucrose contents rose to high levels (40–98 µmoles/g dw) in live air-dry leaves of all species (except the grass Eragrostiella nardoides in which it rose to only 11 µmoles/g dw) to become the predominant sugar. Glucose and/or fructose contents frequently were lower after leaf drying but usually these were the sugars of next highest contents in live air-dry leaves. Contents of raffinose (that has been postulated to reduce sucrose crystallization) rose to c. 10% of sucrose contents in air-dry leaves of most desiccation tolerant species (but only c. 4% in Tripogon jacquemontii) compared with c. 2% of sucrose contents in the sensitive grass S. pyramidalis. Trehalose (a rare sugar in seed-plants) was present in all but one desiccation tolerant species (Xerophyta villosa) but only in minor amounts. The results are consistent with the views that sugars play a protective role during drying of desiccation tolerant plants in general but that other factors are also involved indesiccation tolerance, that in desiccation tolerant angiospermae sucrose is generally the predominant protective sugar and that raffinose and trehalose may supplement the role of sucrose.  相似文献

The prevalence and diversity of tick-borne zoonotic bacteria (Borrelia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Coxiella burnetii, and spotted fever group rickettsiae) infecting 253 small mammals captured in the Basque Country (Spain) were assessed using PCR and reverse line blot hybridization. Trapping sites were selected around sheep farms (study 1, 2000 to 2002) and recreational parks (study 2, 2003 to 2005). The majority of the studied mammals (162) were wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), but six other different species were also analyzed: yellow-necked mice (Apodemus flavicollis), shrews (Crocidura russula and Sorex coronatus), bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus), domestic mice (Mus domesticus), and moles (Talpa europaea). The results showed an infection rate ranging from 10.7% to 68.8%, depending on the small mammal species. One C. russula shrew and one A. sylvaticus mouse gave positive reactions for A. phagocytophilum, and C. burnetii was detected in two domestic mice and one A. sylvaticus mouse in a farm. The DNA of Borrelia spp. was detected in 67 animals (26.5%), most of them presenting positive hybridization with the probe for Borrelia sp. strain R57, the new Borrelia species previously detected in small mammals in our region. Furthermore, a second PCR and reverse line blot hybridization specific for B. burgdorferi sensu lato revealed the presence of Borrelia afzelii in 6.3% of C. glareolus voles and 14.3% of S. coronatus shrews. All small mammals were negative for spotted fever group rickettsiae. These results highlight the relevance of small mammals as reservoirs of some zoonotic bacteria.  相似文献

The ossicular apparatus of golden moles in the genus Chlorotalpa has received comparatively little attention in the literature, although the malleus is known to be intermediate in size between the "unmodified" malleus of Amblysomus and the hypertrophied mallei found in some other golden moles. In the present study, the middle ear structures of three Chlorotalpa species (C. duthieae, C. sclateri, and C. arendsi) are described. Measurements of middle ear structures were applied into three existing models of middle ear function. The predictions from the models suggest that the airborne hearing of Chlorotalpa species is limited to relatively low frequencies, but the impedance transformation by the middle ear apparatus is expected to be reasonably efficient. The sensitivity of the middle ear apparatus to inertial bone conduction is intermediate between that predicted for Amblysomus and that predicted for species with hypertrophied mallei. Hearing in fossorial mammals may be limited by factors other than the middle ear apparatus: the predictions for Chlorotalpa must therefore be treated with caution. However, a consideration of the "intermediate" middle ear morphology of Chlorotalpa species sheds some light on the origin of ossicular hypertrophy in golden moles. The limited enlargement of the malleus seen in Chlorotalpa is expected to have improved seismic sensitivity by bone conduction significantly at low frequencies, while airborne hearing might not have been adversely affected.  相似文献

To obtain further perspective on reproduction and particularly gamete function among so-called primitive mammals presently grouped in the Order Insectivora, we have examined the African hedgehog, Atelerix albiventris, in light of unusual features reported in shrews and moles. Atelerix proves to share many but not all of the characteristics seen in these other insectivores. The penis of Atelerix has a 'snail-like' form, but lacks the surface spines common in insectivores and a number of other mammals. Hedgehog spermatozoa display an eccentric insertion of the tail on the sperm head, and they manifest the barbs on the perforatorium that, in shrews, probably effect the initial binding of the sperm head to the zona pellucida. As a possible correlate, the structural matrix of the hedgehog acrosome comprises only two main components, as judged by immunoblotting, rather than the complex of peptides seen in the matrix of some higher mammals. The Fallopian tube of Atelerix is relatively simple; it displays only minor differences in width and in the arborized epithelium between the isthmus and ampulla, and shows no evidence of the unusual sperm crypts that characterize the isthmus or ampulla, depending on the species, in shrews and moles. In common with other insectivores, Atelerix appears to be an induced ovulator, as judged by the ovulation of some 6-8 eggs by about 23 h after injection of hCG. The dense cumulus oophorus appeared to have little matrix, in keeping with the modest dimensions of the tubal ampulla and, while it was not quite as discrete as that of soricids, it did show the same insensitivity to 0.5% (w/v) ovine or bovine hyaluronidase.  相似文献

The somatosensory cortex of several mole species (family Talpidae), with different peripheral sensory adaptations, was investigated and compared to determine common and specialized features of cortical organization. Previously unidentified medial representations of the trunk and limbs were found in all species, indicating that S1 in moles occupies a medial to lateral strip of cortex as in most other mammals. This finding suggests a large lateral forelimb representation, previously attributed to S1, is actually part of S2. In the face representation, evidence was found for three representations of the unusual nose of the star-nosed mole ( Condylura cristata ). Each of these areas was divided into a series of modules (visible in cytochrome oxidase processed tissue) representing individual nasal appendages on the star. In the closely related but less specialized eastern mole ( Scalopus aquaticus ) and coast mole ( Scapanus orarius ), only two nose representations were identified in an area of cortex with a more uniform histological appearance. The results indicate that moles have enlarged somatosensory representations of the glabrous nose as compared to shrews and rats that instead have large vibrissal representations. In addition moles have a very large and specialized representation of the digging forepaw in S2. Since this part of S2 projects directly to the cervical spinal cord, the specialization may provide adaptive sensorimotor functions related to digging.  相似文献

Previous studies of the reproductive biology and genetics of European moles (Talpa spp.) showed that all females of these species have ovotestes (gonads with testicular and ovarian tissue) instead of normal ovaries, a unique specialization among mammals. Females are fertile as their ovarian tissue is fully functional. Testicular tissue is abnormal and sterile, but produces high levels of testosterone. This phenomenon also characterizes other talpid species from Europe and North America. To study the origin of this singular reproductive specialization, we examined the gonads of several female specimens belonging to two critical taxa. Although large Japanese moles (Mogera wogura) posses ovotestes, greater Japanese shrew moles (Urotrichus talpoides) are characterized by normal ovaries. The results fit parsimoniously with a recent phylogenetic study that places Urotrichus relatively basal in the talpid tree and separate from the American shrew mole. Parsimony reconstruction on alternative phylogenetic hypotheses clearly indicates that reversal(s) must have occurred and suggests that a relatively simple genetic mechanism must be associated with the evolution of female hermaphroditism in moles.  相似文献

Golden moles (Chrysochloridae) are small, subterranean mammals endemic to sub-Saharan Africa that together with tenrecs constitute one of six orders in Afrotheria. Here we present a comprehensive karyotypic comparison among six species/subspecies of golden moles based on G-banding and chromosome painting. By expanding the species representation to include a further five species recently published in a companion paper, we were able to map the distribution of telomeric repeats in ten species/subspecies that are representative of six of the nine currently recognized genera. We conclude that: (i) the monophyly of Amblysomus is supported by the amplification of heterochromatin in several pericentric regions and one intrachromosomal rearrangement; (ii) A. hottentotus meesteri groups as sister to a clade that contains A. h. hottentotus, A. h. longiceps, A. h. pondoliae and A. robustus, an association that is underpinned by a shared intrachromosomal rearrangement and the detection of telomeric sequences in the centromeres of all chromosomes of the three A. hottentotus subspecies and A. robustus but, importantly, not in those of A. h. meesteri. These findings indicate an absence of gene flow suggesting that A. h. meesteri should be elevated to specific status. We hypothesize that the lack of gene flow may, in part, reflect hybrid dysgenesis resulting from abnormal meiotic segregation as a consequence of differences in the nature of the centromeric specific satellites; (iii) chromosomes 7 and 13 of Chrysochloris asiatica are fused in both Calcochloris obtusirostris and Eremitalpa granti, but that the position of the centromere in the fused chromosome differs in each species. This suggests that rather than being indicative of common ancestry, the fusion is more likely a convergent character which has arisen independently in each lineage. Furthermore our painting data show two centromeric shifts that are probably autapomorphic for C. obtusirostris. Finally, we conclude that (iv) golden moles are characterized by strong karyotypic conservatism but in marked contrast to the constrained rates of change exhibited by most species, A. robustus is unique in that three autapomorphic fissions define its evolutionary history, and hence the more extensive reshuffling of its genome.  相似文献

Enterococci were obtained from the feces of 71% of 216 mammals, 86% of 70 reptiles, and 32% of 22 birds sampled in a truly wild environment, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Patterns of food dependence and also of species dependence were observed. Among the lower classes of the primarily herbivorous mammals, the enterococci occurred sporadically; however, of the six species of Sciuridae, the gray squirrel, and of four species of Cricetidae, the red-backed mouse, the enterococci appear to be natural hosts. The enterococci were not obtained from most specimens of moles, shrews, or rabbits but they were obtained from most specimens of bats and from the carnivorous mammals, such as fox, bear, raccon, skunk, and boar. Streptococcus faecalis was obtained from 12 reptiles, and a caseolytic variant was obtained from 37 specimens of the reptiles. The strongly reducing, tellurite-tolerant species, S. faecalis, its caseolytic variant, and S. faecalis var. zymogenes were isolated from 127 or 41% of 308 specimens cultured. S. faecium was recovered from 87 or 28% of the animals, chiefly from the wild boar (60 of 64 trials) and the black bear. S. zymogenes was obtained from 1 of 31 bats, 3 of 12 raccoons, and 1 of 3 owls.  相似文献

The first MRP (matrix representation with parsimony) supertree phylogeny of the Lipotyphla is presented, covering all the families that were considered to make up the traditional mammalian order Insectivora. The phylogeny does not examine relationships within the shrew subfamily Crocidurinae, but all other taxa are considered at the species level, drawing upon 41 years of systematic literature and combining information from 47 published sources. The MRP technique is also critically discussed. This study will be of use to comparative biology studies of the Lipotyphla (or of mammals as a whole) and is a rigorous review of past systematic work, as well as clearly demonstrating our current level of knowledge. The supertree clearly details a strong imbalance in phylogenetic understanding across the taxon: a great deal is known about the hedgehogs and gymnures (Erinaceidae), the New World moles (Talpidae), Palaearctic species of Sorex (subgenus Sorex ) and the relationships between genera of red-toothed shrews (Soricinae). The supertree, however, clearly shows areas where our knowledge is conflicting or non-existent, and these gaps do not always correspond to obscure species: nothing is known about the systematics of Old World mole genera. Also very little is known about golden moles (Chrysochloridae) and the shrew-tenrec genus Microgale , some of the most threatened mammals on Earth.  相似文献

1. Tissues from four ray species and two shark species were examined concerning Superoxide dismutase and catalase content, and malonaldehyde and tocopherol concentrations.2. Livers displayed the highest Superoxide dismutase and catalase content in all species examined. Sharks exhibited higher mean enzyme contents than rays (3.6 and 2.4 nmol SOD g−1 wet tissue, 185 and 120 pmol catalase g−1 wet tissue).3. Tocopherol was detected in liver from all species, in kidney and in ovary from one ray and one shark species, and in shark cristaline in a range of 0.1–4.8 nmol g−1 wet tissue.4. The content of antioxidant enzymes in elasmobranchs was lower than that of teleosts, and seems to follow the overall metabolic oxygen consumption or activity level from each fish major taxonomic group.5. Liver peroxidation as measured as MDA/TBARS concentration, revealed very high values (range of 1.5–4.5 μmoles g−1 wet tissue), approximately one order of magnitude higher when compared with mammals.  相似文献

A Rich variety of anatomical and physiological specializations has enabled members of the family Talpidae (moles, shrew moles, and desmans) to exploit a diverse range of habitats: terrestrial, semi-aquatic, aquatic/fossorial, semi-fossorial, and fossorial. While numerous morphological and biochemical studies pertaining to the origin and radiation of the Talpidae have been completed, phylogenetic hypotheses remain controversial. To address this shortcoming we sequenced the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b gene (1140bp) from 29 individuals spanning 12 talpid species. Phylogenetic trees incorporating 12 New and Old World genera (18 species; all 3 extant subfamilies) were then constructed using NJ, MP, ML, and NJ-ML (NJ with ML parameters) methods. Our results provide molecular support for a mononphyletic Talpidae, and suggest that the 12 genera are clustered into seven major clades; (1) Asiatic shrew-like moles (Uropsilus), (2) North American aquatic/fossorial moles (Condylura), (3) North American fossorial moles (Parascalops, Scalopus, and Scapanus), (4) North American semi-fossorial shrew moles (Neurotrichus), (5) Japanese semi-fossorial shrew moles (Dymecodon and Urotrichus), (6) European semi-aquatic desmans (Desmana), and (7) Eurasian fossorial moles (Euroscaptor, Mogera, and Talpa). None of these groupings comprised mole species from both continents. In fact, North American moles and shrew moles do not appear to have specific affinities with Asian moles and shrew moles, respectively. Although low bootstrap support was generally found for evolutionary nodes uniting the major talpid clades, all gene trees constructed identified fossorial North American and Eurasian mole lineages as nonmonophyletic groups, suggesting subterranean specializations arose independently at least twice during the evolution of the Talpidae. Additionally, our data set provides molecular support for a basal divergence and long independent history of Uropsilus from the main talpid line, and refutes the traditional taxonomic status and secondarily basal phylogenetic placement of the subfamily Desmaninae within the Talpidae.  相似文献

Weasels were regularly livetrapped, anaesthetized and searched for fleas over two years, in Wytham Woods, near Oxford. Eleven species of fleas were identified among 262 collected. Seven normally occur on small rodents, one on rats, two on moles and one on birds. Fleas were collected on 103 of 338 occasions when an unconscious weasel was examined; on average males carried 0·6 fleas, females 1·5 fleas, but there was no significant difference between the proportion of males and females infested. The species distribution of the fleas on weasels in Wytham suggests that they acquire their fleas mainly from the nests and runways of their prey, which they have hunted through or taken over. Important prey, e.g. birds (22% of prey items identified) with uninviting nests contributed few fleas (2%); non-prey, e.g. moles (0–4% of items) with highly desirable nests, contributed disproportionately many, including 35 fleas (15%) of two species otherwise monoxenous on moles. A similar pattern is shown by the fleas carried by stoats in New Zealand.  相似文献

We sequenced the cytochrome b gene from two little-studied mammal species from the highlands of Southwest China, the long-tailed mole Scaptonyx fusicaudus and the gracile shrew-like mole Uropsilus gracilis. This data was used to examine the phylogenetic relationships among 19 talpid species within the family Talpidae (Mammalia: Eulipotyphla). Cytochrome b gene trees supported a basal placement of shrew-like moles (Uropsilus) within the Talpidae, and suggested that fossorial specializations arose twice during talpid evolution. To assess the evolutionary relationships of moles endemic to this region, we additionally sequenced the 12S rRNA gene and the nuclear recombination-activating gene-1 from eight and ten East Asian taxa, respectively. Analyses of these single and concatenated data sets suggested that East Asian shrew moles diverged prior to the evolution of fossorial Eurasian moles. However, we were unable to determine whether semi-fossorial shrew moles are monophyletic. In contrast, fossorial Eurasian genera (Talpa, Mogera and Euroscaptor) were consistently found to form a monophyletic clade, with Mogera and Euroscaptor representing sister taxa. Furthermore, this fossorial clade grouped with the semi-aquatic Desmana, although with fairly low (35-62%) bootstrap support. Mogera imaizumii was found to be more closely related to M. wogura than to M. tokudae. This implies that the ancestors of these three species entered Japan from the Asian continent in this order via a series of migration events, suggesting that the Japanese Islands have played an important role in preserving mole lineages from ancient to recent times.  相似文献

We investigated the relationships between vegetation area, edge length, and mammals in the urban woods of Daejeon Metropolitan City, South Korea. The vegetation patches included in this study varied from 2.1 to 501.0?ha in size. Surveys were conducted monthly between February and October 2015, with a survey route measuring 1?km in length and 10?m width established in each forest patch. Field signs of 14 species of mammals were recorded in the 33 chosen forest patches over the course of the study period, and the number of species in each patch varied from 2 to 11. Mammal species richness was positively correlated with vegetation area, and field sign frequency was positively correlated with vegetation area and negatively correlated with edge length. The field sign frequencies of large moles Mogera robusta, Siberian chipmunks Tamias sibiricus, leopard cats Prionailurus bengalensis, Korean hares Lepus coreanus, water deer Hydropotes inermis, and wild boars Sus scrofa were positively correlated with vegetation area. Moreover, that of large moles, leopard cats, Korean hares, and water deer were negatively correlated with edge length. Remnant vegetation area and edge length are the primary determinants of mammal species richness and field sign frequency in urban woods, highlighting the importance of vegetation patch size for mammal conservation in fragmented urban landscapes.  相似文献

Adiaspores of the fungus Emmonsia crescens were detected microscopically in the lung tissue of 13% of 10.081 small mammals belonging to 24 species examined in 14 areas of the Czech Republic between 1986 and 1997; 441/1.934 (23%) Clethrionomys glareolus, 1/6 (17%) Arvicola terrestris, 357/2.172 (16%) Apodemus flavicollis, 220/1.981 (11%). A sylvaticus, 23/265 (9%) A. microps, 11/81 (14%) Microtus subterraneus, 93/1.275 (7%) M. arvalis, 98/1.439 (7%) M. agrestis, 1/3 (33%) Ondatra zibethicus, 1/1 Cricetus cricetus, 1/20 (5%) Crocidura suaveolens, 2/40 (5%) Neomys fodiens, and 13/529 (2%) Sorex araneus were infected. Emmonsiosis was not recorded among the species of rodents that do not build their nests in the soil (Muscardinus avellanarius, Micromys minutus, Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus). The overall prevalence of emmonsiosis was significantly higher in adult (19%) than in juvenile (7%) mammals, and in rodents (13%, and 20% in adults) than in insectivores (2%, and 4% in adults). The frequency of infected mammals also varied according to geographic area, altitude, habitat, and season.  相似文献

A serologic survey for Toxoplasma gondii in 18 free-ranging forest mammal species (n = 456) in French Guiana was undertaken with a direct agglutination test. Serum antibody prevalence varied from 0-71%. The relationships between ecologic features of the species and seroprevalence were investigated. Terrestrial mammals were significantly more exposed to T. gondii than other mammals. This result is concordant with oral exposure to T. gondii related to ground dwelling behavior and/or carnivory.  相似文献

Organ scaling in mammals: the kidneys   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Values of kidney weight in adult male and female mammals, both terrestrial and aquatic, as well as values for renal blood flow and glomerular number and diameter, were submitted to linear (log-log) regression analysis. The slope of the regression line for kidney weight in 63 species of adult terrestrial mammals was 0.85 %/- 0.01. No statistically significant difference was found between the slopes of the regression lines for male and female terrestrial mammals. The slope of regression line for kidney weight in eight species of adult aquatic mammals was 0.92 +/- 0.01. Again, no statistically significant difference was found between the slopes for males and females. However, the slope (0.92) of the regression line for aquatic mammals was significantly different from the slope (0.85) for terrestrial mammals (P much less than 0.001). The slope of the regression of renal blood flow on body weight was 0.82 +/- 0.01. This value is consistent with the hypothesis that renal blood flow represents a constant fraction of cardiac output (over about 3.4 orders of magnitude in body weight). The slopes of the regression lines for glomerular number (per kidney) and mean glomerular diameter were 0.59 +/- 0.02 and 0.11 +/- 0.01, respectively. A schematic model representing the scaling of energy-partitioning in mammals is introduced.  相似文献
