Growth (assessed from intermolt period and molt increment) andmetabolism (oxygen consumption) of juvenile and adult Thysanoessalongipes from central Japan Sea were determined at eight differenttemperatures ranging from 0 to 14°C. The intermolt periodshortened progressively as temperature increased from 0 to 14°C.The molt increment was not assessed satisfactorily in the rearingexperiments, and therefore this was estimated from the naturalgrowth curve and habitat temperature, combined with laboratory-obtainedintermolt data. Oxygen consumption rates increased exponentiallyfrom 0 to 8°C and then leveled off. From these results,the growth was expressed as a function of temperature and bodysize and metabolism as a function of temperature. Because ofthe differential effects of temperature on growth and metabolism,the net growth efficiency [NGE: 100 x growth/(growth + metabolism)]changed with temperature. The temperature at which T. longipesattained maximum NGE varied from 0 to 8°C, depending onthe body length of specimens of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mm. The presentresults are compared with our previous data on Euphausia pacificain relation to the body composition and habitat usage of thesetwo trophically important species in the food web of the JapanSea.  相似文献

86Rb uptake was examined in two species of unicellular greenalgae, Chlamydomonas nivalis isolated from snow, and a cellwall-less mutant of the temperate freshwater Chlamydomonas reinhardii.In C. reinhardii cells grown at 20°C and cooled rapidlyto 0°C, 86Rb uptake was abolished. Cells cooled rapidlyto –5°C in the absence of ice accumulated 86Rb veryrapidly but the time course of this uptake suggested non-selectiveaccumulation through a damaged plasmalemma. Cells grown at 8°Cwere viable, able to divide and motile; they showed no signsof cold-shock and 86Rb uptake, albeit slow, was measurable at–5°C in the absence of extracellular ice. Cells ofC. nivalis grown at 20°C were damaged at sub-zero temperaturesalthough they did show an enhanced 86Rb uptake at 0°C. Cellsgrown at 5°C were able to accumulate 86Rb from media undercooledto -5°C in the absence of extracellular ice, and again showedenhanced uptake at 0°C. The involvement of alternative respiration in thermogenesisduring the ripening of banana {Musa paradisiaca var. MysoreKadali) fruits, attached to a bunch, has been examined. Thetemperature of the youngest (unripened) banana fruit increasedfrom 27·0 ± 0·2°C to 30·8±0·1°C and the total respiration (in nmo1 oxygen min1 g1 drywt.) increased from 1·39·6 ± 5·5to 167·3 ± 7·0 at the fully ripened stage.Although the capacity for alternative respiration showed littlechange, the actual operation of this pathway increased from38 to 73% (p= 0·38 to 0·73) during ripening. Similarresults were obtained in fruits along the central axis at differentstages of ripening. Small particles along the veins of leaves in Phalaenopsis containsilicon. The silica bodies are spherical in shape and 5-20 µmin diameter. In the in vitro cultured plantlets, they grow differentlyin size, depending on the developmental stage of the plantletsand the concentration of silicon added to the medium. The growthof the silica body was increased by increasing the concentrationof CaSiO3 from 0·01 to 0·5 mg l-1 and was maximizedfrom 0·5 to 1·0 mg l-1. In the medium with 1·0mg l-1 CaSiO3, they grew to a size larger than that of the greenhouseplants after 6 months in culture. The effect of body size on the oxygen consumption and metabolicrate of Cerithidea (Cerithideopsilla) cingulata (Gmelin, 1790)andCerithium coralium Kiener, 1841 was studied at a constant temperatureof 25°C. An exponential relationship has been observed inboth animals. Oxygen consumption showed a positive linear correlationwith a ‘b’ value of 0.6518 in C. cingulata and 0.7667in C. coralium. A negative linear correlation was obtained forthe metabolic rate with a (b-1) value of –0.3482 in C.cingulata and –0.2333 in C. coralium.  相似文献

Cirripede larvae can occur year-round in temperate and tropicalwaters, often in significant numbers, yet the species compositionof the ‘Balanus sp.’ component is rardy studied.Weekly plankton samples were analyzed qualitatively for larvalcirripede species and stage over a year (1977–1978) attwo Rhode Island stations. Six species of larvae were foundin Lower Narragansett Bay (30° salinity). Semibalanus balanoidesand Balanus balanus have a single winter brood. S. balanoidesis the predominant winter breeder with a minor release of naupliiin early December and major release in March followed by cypridsin mid-April.B. balanus populations release all larvae in Marchwith cyprids in mid-April. Balanus crenatus is mainly a winterbreeder, but has multiple broods; it does not breed in July-Septemberwhen the water temperature is above 18°C. Balanus venustusis the predominant summer breeder, and larvae were observedfrom May through December (water >8°C). Larvae of Chthamalusfragilis and Balanus eburneus occur in low numbers from May-October.At the Pettaquamscutt River site (12 salinity), Balanus improvisuslarvae predominate and early stage nauplii (I-II) occur in samplesyear round (0–27°C). Two peaks of later stage naupliiand cyprids occur in late spring (May) and early winter (Nov.-Jan.).Continued temperatures bdow 5°C or above 20°C appearto inhibit larval development. Comparison of results with existing literature reveals severalsignificant findings. The bimodal rdease of S. balanoides larvaeis unusual and may be in response to the phytoplankton dynamicsof the year; however, the existence of distinct races of S.balanoides may also be a factor. Larvae of B. venustus predominatein the lower bay during the summer, yet this species is unreportedin past studies. B. improvisus nauplii are more cold tolerantthan previously reported. The annual dynamics of the numbers and distribution of barnaclelarvae in Avacha Inlet were studied. Planktonic cirripede larvaewere found in the area studied from late March at a temperatureof –1–0°C until October. The highest densityof 18 000 m–3 was observed in mid-April. Balanus crenatusand Semibalanus cariosus were the dominant species, Chthamalusdalli and Balanus balanus larvae being less abundant. Naupliardensity was maximal at 0–5 m and decreased with depth.Maximum densities of B.crenatus larvae were observed in RakovayaBay, where there are many ships and a seawater-cooled powerstation. Following acclimation to 5°, 15° or 25°C for 14days, samples of 30 Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussels) andCorbicula fluminea (Asian clams) were held in either aerated(control) or extremely hypoxic N2 gassed water (PO2 < 3%of full air saturation). Mortality was negligible in all aeratedcontrols. Mean hypoxia tolerance in D. polymorpha ranged from3–4 days at 25°C to 38–42 days at 5°C. Hypoxiatolerance time of zebra mussels increased significantly withdeclining test temperature (P < 0.001) and increasing acclimationtemperature (P < 0.001). Larger zebra mussels were more tolerantthan smaller individuals. Asian clams were 2–7 times moretolerant of hypoxia than zebra mussels, surviving a mean of11.8 and 35.1 days at 25°C and 15°C, respectively, andwithout mortality for 84 days at 5°C, and were not influencedby temperature acclimation. At 25°C, larger specimens ofAsian clams were less tolerant of hypoxia than smaller individuals.Both species are amongst the least hypoxia tolerant freshwaterbivalve molluscs, reflecting their prevalence in well-oxygenatedshallow water habitats. Effects of temperature (15°, 20° and 25°C), O2 partialpressure (PO2=0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 kPa), and individual size(12–79 mm shell length; SL) on survivorship of specimensof the non-indigenous, marine, brown mussel, Perna perna, fromTexas were investigated to assess its potential distributionin North America. Its hypoxia tolerance was temperature-dependent,survivorship being significantly extended at lower temperaturesunder all tested lethal PO2. Incipient tolerated PO2 was 4 and6 kPa at 15 and 20°C, respectively, with >50% mortalityoccurring at 25°C at all tested levels of hypoxia. PO2 hadless of an effect on survival of hypoxia than temperature. At25°C, survivorship was not different over a PO2 range of0–2 kPa and increased only at 4 and 6 kPa. Survivorshipwas size-dependent. Median survival times increased with increasingSL in anoxia and PO2=1 kPa, but at 2, 4 and 6 kPa,smaller individuals survived longer than larger individuals.With tolerance levels similar to other estuarine bivalve species,P. perna should withstand hypoxia encountered in estuarine environments.Thus, its restriction to intertidal rocky shores may be dueto other parameters, particularly its relatively low temperaturetolerance. The vertical distribution and feeding of pelagic chaetognathsat 5°S, 160°W in the Central Equatorial Pacific wereinvestigated using a series of 0–500 m vertical haulswith a VMPS net over a 24 h period between 6 and 7 October 1990.The total number of individuals per haul was between 370 and688. Fourteen species in four genera were found at this station.The most abundant species was Sagitta enflata which comprised32.4–61.1% of the individuals collected from the 0–500m layer. Mesopelagic species made up 9.3–15.1% of thetotal number of individuals. Sagitta enflata and Pterosagittadraco were found in the upper part of the thermocline both byday and at night. The fraction of the population containingfood items (FCF) of S.enflata in the 0–50 m layer variedbetween 4.8 and 12.5% (mean 10.8%) and feeding activity washighest between sunrise and noon. The percentages of Copepoda,Foraminifera, crustacean larvae, Chaetognatha, Pteropoda, Ostracoda,fish and unidentified material in the gut of S.enflata were51.9,6.7,3.8,2.9,1.9,1.9 and 30.9%, respectively. Sagitta enflataconsumed food organisms which were mainly between 0.5 and 1.0mm in length. The daily feeding rate of S.enflata was 1.81 preyper individual, which was equivalent to 8.06 mg C m–2day–1. Thermal analyses of freezing events in hydrated lettuce (LactucasativaL.) seeds show a correlation between low temperature exotherms(LTEs) (evidence of ice crystal formation) and seed death. Yet,weather patterns common to the Northern Great Plains of NorthAmerica regularly create conditions where non-dormant seedsof native plants hydrate with snow melt and are subsequentlyexposed to -30 °C or colder conditions. To determine ifsuch weather patterns decimate dispersed seeds, we measuredthe effects of freezing on fully hydrated winterfat (Eurotialanata(Pursh) Moq.) seeds harvested from the Northern Plainsat two USA and one Canadian location. Survival of hydrated seedsto -30 °C at a cooling rate of 2.5 °C h-1was similarto that of seeds not subjected to cooling, even though botha high temperature exotherm (HTE) and an LTE were observed.Although the LTE was not related to winterfat seed survival,freeze-stressed seeds had reduced germination rates and reducedseedling vigour, particularly for the collection with the lightestseeds. The temperature of LTEs was similar among seed collectionswith a mean of -17.6 °C, but was warmer when the seeds wereimbibed at 0 °C compared to 5, 10 or 20 °C. We founda significant correlation between the HTE and LTE temperatures.The difference and the correlation may be due to the highermoisture content of seeds imbibed at 0 °C. After pericarpremoval, only one exotherm in the range of the LTE was observed.This was also true for the naked embryo. Growth responses of the red tide flagellates, Heterocapsa circularisquama(Dinophyceae) and Chattonella verruculosa (Raphidophyceae),were examined with 36 different combinations of temperature(5–30°C) and salinity (10–35 PSU). Heterocapsacircularisquama did not grow at or below a temperature of 10°C.The maximum growth rate of H.circularisquama (1.3 divisionsday–1) was obtained with a combination of 30°C and30 PSU. In contrast, C. verruculosa did not grow at 10 PSU andat temperatures of 25°C or more. The maximum growth rateof C. verruculosa (1.74 divisions day–1) was obtainedwith a combination of 15°C and 25 PSU. A significant temperature-salinityinteraction on growth was found by factorial analysis. Basedon the physiological characteristics obtained in the presentstudy, these novel flagellates have a potential for future outbreaksof red tides in pre viously unaffected waters.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Studies are described on the adenosine triphosphatase(ATPase) properties of myosin isolated from skeletal muscleof Coryphaenoides, a benthic fish captured at 2,200 meters depth.Ca2+-ATPase and EDTA-ATPase of Coryphaenoides myosin show thesame pH dependence as ATPase of mammalian myosin; however, ratesof ATP hydrolysis by Coryphaenoides myosin are only 5–10%of rates of ATP hydrolysis by rabbit skeletal myosin. Coryphaenoidesmyosin ATPase shows a decrease from Q10 of 2.0 at 25°C toQ10 of 1.4 a t 2°C, and undergoes irreversible denaturationat temperatures above 25°C. At pH 6.8 to pH 8.5, Coryphaenoidesmyosin ATPase undergoes activation by pressure at 25°C,but at 2°C shows negligible effect of pressure at valuesbelow 3,000 psi. The kinetic data on Ca2+-ATPase indicate valuesof 11 kcal/mole for H, –7.5 kcal/mole for TS, and –5.7cc/mole for V at 25°C, pH 7.6. Comparable data at 2°Cindicate values of 5 kcal/mole for H. –13 kcal/mole forTS, and negligible V. According to the results of 25°C,Ca2+-activatkm of myosin-ATP may involve disruption of fouror five hydrophobic or polar groups, presumably due to an "opening-up"of the myosin molecule at or near the site for ATP binding.It would also appear that Coryphaenoides myosin has undergonean adaptive change in the enzyme mechanism for ATPase such thatthe rate of ATP hydrolysis is relatively insensitive to pressureand temperature under conditions encountered by the living fish.  相似文献

Freezing of healthy and rust (Puccinia lagenophorae) infectedleaves of Senecio vulgaris was compared calorimetrically bythermal analysis. In fully expanded leaves the threshold freezingtemperature was in the range –6.8 to –8.4 °Cin controls but –3.0 to –5.1 °C in leaves withsporulating rust sori. Comparable values in expanding leaveswere –5.0 to –8.9 °C and –3.9 to –6.7°C for healthy and rusted tissues, respectively. The bulktissue freezing point was between –1.0 and –4.0°C in both fully expanded and expanding healthy leaves,and was increased by infection by between +0.2 and 2.5 °C.Whereas healthy leaves supercooled by 3.1–5.8 °C,rusted leaves supercooled by only 1.8–4.9 °C Supercoolingof control leaves was reduced by dusting with aeciospores, particularlywhen leaves were wounded to simulate the rupture of the surfacecaused by sporulation, but wounding alone had no significanteffect. Supercooling of distilled water was also significantlyreduced by aeciospores, suspended at a concentration of 105spores ml–1. It is concluded that rust-induced changes in leaf freezing inS. vulgaris grown in controlled environments were due to anincrease in the number of sites for ice nucleation, caused bythe presence of the aeciospores, and increased penetration ofice into internal tissues, resulting from damage to the cuticleand epidermis. Although data for frost resistance obtained inthe growth-room are similar to previous field observations,the role of the above mechanisms under field conditions remainsunproven. The moulting interval of the euphausiid Thysanoessa inermisfrom the Barents Sea was found to be temperature dependent withinthe range of 1.5–8.0°C. Each moult accounted for a2.1% loss of dry body wt, equivalent to a 1.2–1.3% lossof body carbon or nitrogen. Larvae of Mithrax caribbaeus were reared in the laboratoryin a factorial experiment employing three temperatures (22,25 and 28°C) and three salinities (32, 35 and 38). Survivaland duration of larval stages were recorded. Ovigerous femalesof M.caribbaeus were collected from the south-eastern coastof Margarita Island, Venezuela, and maintained in individualaquaria until hatching. Eggs from three of the females hatchedin the laboratory. Larvae from each hatching were subdividedinto groups of 10 and reared in plastic bowls containing 200ml filtered and UV-irradiated sea water at different temperature–salinitycombinations. Larvae were transferred daily to clean bowls withnewly hatched Artemia nauplii, and the number of molts and mortalitywithin each bowl was recorded. Complete larval development ofM.caribbaeus occurred under all experimental conditions. Salinityhad the greatest effect on percentage survival of each larvalstage and complete development up to the first crab stage. Thefirst zoeal stage exhibited the highest survival rate. Maximumsurvival for this stage occurred at 25°C, 32–35. Survivalin the second zoeal stage and the megalopa was affected onlyby salinity. Effects of temperature and salinity on survivaldecreased with advance in development. The duration of the twozoeal stages, the megalopa, and development to the first crabstage showed a gradual reduction with increasing temperature.Salinity showed an effect on the duration of zoeal stages butnot on the megalopal stage. Development from hatching to thefirst crab stage required 8–18 days, depending on thetemperature–salinity combination, and was inversely relatedto temperature, averaging 14.3 days at 22°C, 11.8 days at25°C and 9.2 days at 28°C.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption of the protobranch bivalve Nucula turgidawas measured in relation to size and to variation in temperatureand ambient oxygen tension. The slope of the line relating logsize and log oxygen uptake varied from 0.539 to 0.884 over therange 5°C to 40°C in summer – conditioned (S)animals but for winter – conditioned (W) animals the slopevaried from 0.561 to 0.762 over the range 5°C to 15°Conly; from 20°C to 35°C the values for the slope fellfrom 0.298 to 0.092. There was evidence of reverse acclimation,since the absolute rate of oxygen consumption was greater inS animals than in W over the temperature range studied. Thelethal limit for both groups appeared to be between 30°Cand 35°C. At all temperatures (5°C–25°C) N. turgida wasfound to be a near complete oxyconformer with b2 x 103 valuesranging from +0.0754 to –0.0234. The responses to temperature differ little from those of eulamellibranchbivalves, but the lack of ability to oxyregulate does demonstratea difference which may be linked to the different gill structure. From 12°S to 9°N-140°W on the benthic cruise ofthe US Joint Global Ocean Flux Studies (JGOFS), horizontal near-surfacenet tows (n = 18) and vertical net hauls (n = 15, 200-0 m) yieldedhigh relative abundances of small, bicapitate, intact Nitzschiavalves (average 59.0 and 56.0% of total diatoms, respectively),although >90% of them were too small to have been caughteffectively with the net used. This complex was much less common(average 3.2% of diatoms) in the surface sediment samples (n= 7, 12°S-9°N, below water depths of 4269-4991 m). Examinationunder the light microscope showed concentrations of cells associatedwith organic detritus, planar and cylindrical membranous structures,fecal pellets, and occasionally on other diatoms (e.g. Asterolampra),i.e. on or within particles large enough to be collected inthe net. Although Nitzschio bicapitato Cleve has been consideredto have a characteristic range of shapes, and has often beencited from open-ocean habitats in nano- and microplanktonicstudies, a scanning electron microscopic study revealed severalspecies in our material. Examples of larger and smaller speciesare given, and Nitzschia ikeanae G.Fryx. & H.Lee, sp. nov.,is described here. Ecologically, these observations indicatethat although some are grazed and have been seen aggregatedin fecal pellets, these small pennate diatoms can affix to andgrow on substrates, termed ‘pseudo-benthic habitats’in the open ocean, resulting in unexpected concentrations thathave implications for their life histories and sexual cycles,selection or avoidance by grazers, sinking on substrates, androles in the recycling of nutrients in near-surface waters.  相似文献

The seasonal variability of phytoplankton in the EquatorialAtlantic was analysed using Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor(SeaWiFS)-derived chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration data from1998 to 2001, together with in situ Chl a and primary productiondata obtained during seven cruises carried out between 1995and 2000. Monthly averaged SeaWiFS Chl a distributions werein agreement with previous observations in the Equatorial Atlantic,showing marked differences between 10° W in the EasternTropical Atlantic (ETRA) and 25° W in the Western TropicalAtlantic (WTRA) provinces (Longhurst et al. 1995. J. PlanktonRes., 17, 1245–1271). The seasonal cycle of SeaWiFS-derivedChl a concentration calculated for 0–10° S, 0–20°W (ETRA) is consistent with in situ Chl a measurements, withvalues ranging from 0.16 mg m–3, from February to April,to 0.52 mg m–3 in August. Lower variability was observedin 10° N–10° S, 20–30° W (WTRA) whereminimum and maximum concentrations occurred in April (0.15 mgm–3) and in August (0.24 mg m–3), respectively.A significant empirical relationship between depth-integratedprimary production and in situ measured sea surface Chl a wasfound for ETRA, allowing us to estimate the seasonal cycle ofdepth-integrated primary production from SeaWiFS-derived Chla. As for Chl a, this model was verified in a small area ofthe Eastern Equatorial Atlantic (0–10° S, 0–20°W), although in this instance it was not completely able todescribe the magnitude and temporal variability of in situ primaryproduction measurements. The annual euphotic depth-integratedprimary production rate estimated for ETRA by our empiricalmodel was 1.4 Gt C year–1, which represents 16% of theopen ocean primary production estimated for the whole AtlanticOcean.  相似文献
