One hundred and fifty-two subjects, divided into eight groups, were exposed to a room with a low concentration of either orange or lavender and to an odorless room. In a careful double-blind procedure, neither the subjects nor the experimenters were made aware of the presence of the odors in the experimental conditions. Later they were asked to indicate how well each of 12 odor stimuli, including the experimental and control odors, befitted each of 12 visual contexts, including the exposure rooms. At the end of this session they rated the pleasantness and the familiarity of the odors, and identified them by name. Finally they were debriefed and asked specifically whether they had perceived the experimental odors anywhere in the building. The results of four subjects who answered positively to the latter question were omitted. The results confirm the earlier finding that non-identifiers implicitly link odor and exposure room, whereas identifiers do not show such a link. It is suggested that episodic information is an essential constituent of olfactory memory and that its function is comparable to that of form and structure in visual and auditory memory systems. 相似文献

We present a prototype of a recently proposed two stage model of the entorhinal-hippocampal loop. Our aim is to form a general computational model of the sensory neocortex. The model--grounded on pure information theoretic principles--accounts for the most characteristic features of long-term memory (LTM), performs bottom-up novelty detection, and supports noise filtering. Noise filtering can also serve to correct the temporal ordering of information processing. Surprisingly, as we examine the temporal characteristics of the model, the emergent dynamics can be interpreted as perceptual priming, a fundamental type of implicit memory. In the model's framework, computational results support the hypothesis of a strong correlation between perceptual priming and repetition suppression and this correlation is a direct consequence of the temporal ordering in forming the LTM. We also argue that our prototype offers a relatively simple and coherent explanation of priming and its relation to a general model of information processing by the brain. 相似文献

The Odor Awareness Scale (OAS) is a questionnaire designed to assess individual differences in awareness of odors in the environment. The theory that odor awareness can be distinguished in awareness of negative (to be avoided) odors and positive (to be approached) odors was tested using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on the 34-item questionnaire after completion by 525 respondents. CFA (after deletion of 2 items) showed good fit of the 2-factor theory, resulting in a positive awareness subscale (11 items, Cronbach's alpha = .77) and a negative awareness subscale (21 items, Cronbach's alpha = .80). Furthermore, reports of sickness from environmental odors were correlated with the negative odor awareness factor, not the positive odor awareness factor. Respondents scoring high on the overall sum score of the OAS showed significantly better olfactory performance on an odor perception test battery than respondents with a low score. These results suggest a causal relation between awareness of potentially negative odors, olfactory performance and experiencing health effects from environmental odor exposure, that warrants further investigation. 相似文献

In general, emotion is known to enhance memory processes. However, the effect of emotion on associative memory and the underling neural mechanisms remains largely unexplored. In this study, we explored brain activation during an associative memory task that involved the encoding and retrieval of word and face pairs. The word and face pairs consisted of either negative or positive words with neutral faces. Significant hippocampal activation was observed during both encoding and retrieval, regardless of whether the word was negative or positive. Negative and positive emotionality differentially affected the hemodynamic responses to encoding and retrieval in the amygdala, with increased responses during encoding negative word and face pairs. Furthermore, activation of the amygdala during encoding of negative word and neutral face pairs was inversely correlated with subsequent memory retrieval. These findings suggest that activation of the amygdala induced by negative emotion during encoding may disrupt associative memory performance. 相似文献

Performance of mice in an automated olfactometer: odor detection, discrimination and odor memory 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Mice were trained on a variety of odor detection and discrimination tasks in 100- or 200-trial sessions using a go, no-go discrete trials operant conditioning procedure. Odors, presented for 1 s on each trial, were generated by an air dilution olfactometer (for threshold tests) and an easily constructed eight-channel liquid dilution unit (for two- and multiple-odor discrimination tasks). Mice rapidly acquired the operant task and demonstrated excellent stimulus control by odor vapors. Their absolute detection threshold for ethyl acetate was similar to that obtained with rats using similar methods. They readily acquired four separate two-odor discrimination tasks and continued to perform well when all eight odors were presented in random order in the same session and when reinforcement probability for correct responding was decreased from 1 to 0.5. Memory for these eight odors, assessed under extinction after a 32 day rest period, was essentially perfect. Time spent sampling the odor on S+ and S- trials was highly correlated with response accuracy. When accuracy was at chance levels (e.g. initial trials on a novel task), stimulus sampling time on both S+ and S- trials was approximately 0.5-0.7 s. As response accuracy increased, sampling time on S+ trials tended to increase and remain higher than sampling time on S- trials. 相似文献

Observed increases in the mineralization rate of labile organic carbon (LOC) in the presence of black carbon (BC) have led to speculation that corresponding decreases in non-pyrogenic (i.e. non-BC) soil organic carbon (npSOC) could significantly reduce or negate the C sequestration benefit of BC in soils. Here we show that the potential effect of an increased LOC decomposition rate on long-term npSOC stocks is negligible, even when using assumptions that would favour large losses, potentially causing no more than 3–4 % loss of npSOC over 100 years if 50 % of above-ground crop residues were converted to BC annually. Conversely, if the BC-stimulated enhanced stabilization of npSOC that has been observed in laboratory trials is extrapolated to the long-term, it would greatly increase soil carbon stocks by 30–60 %. Annual additions of BC derived from crop residues would increase total SOC (including both BC and npSOC) by an amount five times greater than the potential increase from enhanced stabilization and an order of magnitude greater than losses of npSOC caused by annual removals of biomass to provide BC feedstock. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to quantify the decrease in the load lifted from 1 to 5, 10, and 20 repetitions to failure for the flat barbell bench press (chest press; CP) and plate-loaded leg press (LP). Furthermore, we developed prediction equations for 1 repetition maximum (RM) strength from the multiple RM tests, including anthropometric data, gender, age, and resistance training volume. Seventy subjects (34 men, 36 women), 18-69 years of age, completed 1, 5, 10, and 20RM testing for each of the CPs and LPs. Regression analyses of mean data revealed a nonlinear decrease in load with increasing repetition number (CP: linear S(y.x) = 2.6 kg, nonlinear S(y.x) = 0.2 kg; LP: linear S(y.x) = 11.0 kg, nonlinear S(y.x) = 2.6 kg, respectively). Multiple regression analyses revealed that the 5RM data produced the greatest prediction accuracy, with R(2) data for 5, 10, and 20RM conditions being LP: 0.974, 0.933, 0.915; CP: 0.993, 0.976, and 0.955, respectively. The regression prediction equations for 1RM strength from 5RM data were LP: 1RM = 1.0970 x (5RM weight [kg]) + 14.2546, S(y.x) = 16.16 kg, R(2) = 0.974; CP: 1RM = 1.1307 x (5RM weight) + 0.6999, S(y.x) = 2.98 kg, R(2) = 0.993. Dynamic muscular strength (1RM) can be accurately estimated from multiple repetition testing. Data reveal that no more than 10 repetitions should be used in linear equations to estimate 1RM for the LP and CP actions. 相似文献

目的 评估血培养阳性标本直接细菌鉴定和药敏可行性.方法 将血培养瓶放入Bact/Alert 3D 60血培养系统进行培养筛选.选取78份含革兰阴性杆菌的阳性血培养瓶进行试验.抽取培养液,用BD真空分离管离心血细胞.在收集到足量菌液后,用VITEK-32革兰阴性菌鉴定药敏卡做直接鉴定药敏试验.用标准方法及亚培养后的鉴定药敏试验对直接鉴定药敏试验进行评估.结果 VITEK-32直接鉴定试验,78株中的74株(94.9%)准确鉴定,直接药敏试验标准符合率95.6%.KB法血标本直接药敏试验标准符合率96.2%,但微小错误率高于VITEK-32直接药敏法.结论 Bact/Alert血培养阳性标本直接VITEK-32细菌鉴定和药敏对革兰阴性菌是切实可行的,可大幅度缩短时间,为临床及时修正用药提供依据,具有较高的应用价值. 相似文献

In olfaction, there is only weak evidence of repetition priming. Repetition priming was therefore investigated in two experiments using birhinal presentation of odors at study and monorhinal at test. Experiment 1 demonstrated repetition priming for repeated judgements of edibility in terms of response latency, but not in terms of correctness. No differences were found between the hemispheres (nostrils). Experiment 2 utilized a slightly different design, in which identity of odors was studied and judgement of edibility was tested. This time, only the right hemisphere (RH) was associated with priming. This persistence of RH priming should be seen in the light of a general tendency for superiority of the left hemisphere for correctly judging edibility. It is concluded that the olfactory system benefits from previous exposure/processing just as do vision, audition and touch. In line with previous research in vision, it is suggested that RH priming may be more associated with perceptual priming and left-hemisphere (LH) priming with conceptual priming. 相似文献

The problem addressed in this paper is concerned with DNA sequencing by hybridization. An algorithm is proposed that solves a computational phase of this approach in the presence of both positive and negative errors resulting from the hybridization experiment. No a priori knowledge of the nature and source of these errors is required. An extensive set of computational experiments showed that the algorithm behaves surprisingly well if only positive errors appear. The general case, where positive and negative errors occur, can be also solved satisfactorily for an error rate up to 10%. 相似文献

Background
An ongoing debate in the object recognition literature centers on whether the shape representations used in recognition are coded in an orientation-dependent or orientation-invariant manner. In this study, we asked whether the nature of the object representation (orientation-dependent vs orientation-invariant) depends on the information-processing stages tapped by the task.Methodology/ Findings
We employed a repetition priming paradigm in which briefly presented masked objects (primes) were followed by an upright target object which had to be named as rapidly as possible. The primes were presented for variable durations (ranging from 16 to 350 ms) and in various image-plane orientations (from 0° to 180°, in 30° steps). Significant priming was obtained for prime durations above 70 ms, but not for prime durations of 16 ms and 47 ms, and did not vary as a function of prime orientation. In contrast, naming the same objects that served as primes resulted in orientation-dependent reaction time costs.Conclusions/Significance
These results suggest that initial processing of object identity is mediated by orientation-independent information and that orientation costs in performance arise when objects are consolidated in visual short-term memory in order to be reported. 相似文献14.

The study was aimed to investigate whether impending surgery, considered as a stressful life event, might interfere with memory formation like other stress and anxiety conditions do. Results do not support the hypothesis. Implicit and explicit memory performance are both unaffected by presurgery condition and seem influenced, rather, by subjects gender, education and cultural habits. Females perform generally better than males and, regardless of age and sex, higher educated individuals score higher on the explicit memory task. We studied the functional role of Fas (CD95) in thymic T cell development using the TCR transgenic mice homozygous for the lpr mutation, DO10 lpr/lpr mice. In DO10 lpr/lpr mice, the differentiation of CD4(+)CD8(+) double-positive (DP) thymocytes to CD4(+) single-positive (SP) thymocytes was markedly impaired, as indicated by decreased generation of CD4(+) SP thymocytes and reduced ratio of CD4(+) SP thymocytes to DP thymocytes in lpr/lpr mice compared with those of +/+ mice. Activation of DP thymocytes in the process of positive selection was also significantly inhibited in DO10 lpr/lpr mice, as shown by the lower levels of CD69 expression on DP thymocytes in lpr/lpr mice compared to +/+ mice. Furthermore, the deletion of DP thymocytes induced by in vivo administration of OVA peptide (up to 150 micrograms) and anti-TCR clonotype mAb did not occur in DO10 lpr/lpr mice, whereas these treatments significantly decreased DP thymocytes in DO10 +/+ mice. On the other hand, no significant difference in DO10 transgenic TCR expression on DP thymocytes was found between DO10 lpr/lpr and +/+ mice. Understanding the evolution of density-dependent dispersal strategies has been a major challenge for evolutionary ecologists. Some existing models suggest that selection should favour positive and others negative density-dependence in dispersal. Here, we develop a general model that shows how and why selection may shift from positive to negative density-dependence in response to key ecological factors, in particular the temporal stability of the environment. We find that in temporally stable environments, particularly with low dispersal costs and large group sizes, habitat heterogeneity selects for negative density-dependent dispersal, whereas in temporally variable environments, particularly with high dispersal costs and small group sizes, habitat heterogeneity selects for positive density-dependent dispersal. This shift reflects the changing balance between the greater competition for breeding opportunities in more productive patches, versus the greater long-term value of offspring that establish themselves there, the latter being very sensitive to the temporal stability of the environment. In general, dispersal of individuals out of low-density patches is much more sensitive to habitat heterogeneity than is dispersal out of high-density patches. 相似文献
