The ability to extract pollen contents may be related to the extent to which animals use this item as a regular part of their diet. In spite of the broad diversity of taxa that feed on pollen, comparative studies to test this hypothesis are scarce. We compared the extraction efficiency of pollen grains of Blue Mahoe (Talipariti elatum) by Antillean nectar bats (Brachyphylla nana) and Jamaican fruit bats (Artibeus jamaicensis). Antillean nectar bats extracted the contents of a higher percentage of pollen grains than Jamaican fruit bats, even though processing time in the gut was lower in the nectarivorous bats. Pollen extraction efficiency increased with time spent in the gut in each species. The gastrointestinal tract in both species resembled the functioning of a continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) equivalent to the stomach, in series with a plug-flow reactor (PFR) equivalent to the intestine with varying degrees of longitudinal mixing. Accordingly, pollen grains flowed continuously out of the stomach and moved out through the intestine where they were mixed longitudinally. Our results support previous findings of higher extraction efficiencies in nectarivorous bats than their frugivorous relatives, and suggest that these differences may be the result of differences in the level of activity of the enzymes responsible for pollen wall degradation. Identification of enzymatic mechanisms of pollen degradation would allow a direct test of this hypothesis.  相似文献

Pollen protoplasm is very nutritious, but the hard and highly resistant outer wall (exine) of the pollen grain presents an obstacle that pollen-feeders must overcome to benefit from the valuable protoplasm. Pollen digestion in three pollen-eating scarab beetles, the green protea beetle Trichostetha fascicularis and two monkey beetle species, Peritrichia cinerea and Pachynema flavolineata, was investigated. Adult beetles were collected for observations of feeding mechanisms, scanning electron microscopy of mouthparts, and histological examination of gut contents. Serial sections of different regions along the gut were stained for different nutrients and examined to determine the appearance of the pollen grains and the removal of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids from the pollen. During feeding, beetles used dense brushes of setae on the tips of their maxillae to mop up nectar and sweep pollen into their mouths. Grains were ingested intact. Nutrients were effectively removed from the grains as they passed along the gut and most pollen grains in the hindgut were empty, with broken exines. All the beetles excreted the undigested exine. Comparison with other studies on pollen digestion by a variety of insect and vertebrate pollen-feeders suggests that digestive enzyme penetration of ingested pollen grains and exudation of the products of digestion is the most likely method used by these beetles.  相似文献

Floral nectar often contains pollen and microorganisms, which may change nectar's chemical composition, and in turn impact pollinator affinity. However, their individual and combined effects remain understudied. Here, we examined the impacts of the nectar specialist yeast, Metschnikowia reukaufii, and the addition of sunflower (Hellianthus annus) pollen. Pollen grains remained intact, yet still increased yeast growth and amino acid concentrations in nectar, whereas yeast depleted amino acids. Pollen, but not yeast, changed nectar sugar concentrations by converting sucrose to its monomers. Both pollen and yeast contributed emissions from nectar, though yeast volatiles were more abundant than pollen volatiles. Yeast volatile emission was positively correlated with pollen concentration and cell density, and yeast depleted a subset of pollen-derived volatiles. Honey bees avoided foraging on yeast-inoculated nectar and foraged equally among uninoculated nectars regardless of pollen content, underscoring the importance of microbial metabolites in mediating pollinator foraging.  相似文献

In a hypothesis that has remained controversial since its inception, Darwin suggested that long-tubed flowers and long-tongued pollinators evolved together in a coevolutionary race, with each selecting for increasing length in the other. Although the selective pressures that flowers impose on tongue length are relatively straightforward, in that longer tongues allow access to more nectar, selective pressures that pollinators impose on flower length are less clear. Here, we test for such selective pressures in the highly specialized mutualism between the nectar bat Anoura fistulata, which can extend its tongue twice as far as other nectar bats, and Centropogon nigricans, which has flowers of a similar length (8–9 cm). We used flight cage experiments to examine the effects of artificially manipulated flower lengths on (i) bat behaviour and (ii) pollen transfer. Increased length produced longer visits, but did not affect the force bats applied during visits. In the second experiment, flower length increased both the male and female components of flower function: long male flowers delivered more pollen grains and long female flowers received more pollen grains. However, pollen transfer was not correlated with visit duration, so the mechanism behind differences in pollen transfer remains unclear. By demonstrating that bats select for increasing flower length, these results are consistent with the hypothesis that A. fistulata evolved its remarkable tongue in a coevolutionary race with long-tubed flowers similar to that envisioned by Darwin.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The method of pollen digestion by adults of the hoverfly Cheilosia albitarsis Mg. (Diptera: Syrphidae) was investigated by observing pollen grains at different stages in their progression along the gut. No form of mechanical 'grinding' to break up the grains was observed, as suggested by some previous authors. Instead, there was an exudation of the pollen grain contents through one of the pores in the pollen exine. This exudation may start as a growing pollen tube. The exact conditions which cause the pollen grains to give up their contents in this way are unknown, but it is suggested that nectar sugar within the gut may provide the necessary stimulus.  相似文献

In P. affinis, pin pollen is shorter on average than thrum pollen. Pins have more coronal hooks on stigmatic papillae than thrums, but gaps between papillae are relatively smaller for thrums. Pin stigmas receive more pollen than thrum stigmas. Thrum stigmas receive more (dissortive) pin pollen, but pin stigmas are assortively pollinated. Pollen only germinates when trapped below papilla coronas. On thrum stigmas, most trapped pollen is pin. Pollen germination is better on thrum stigmas than pin stigmas, and thrum stigmas show a close relationship between numbers of legitimate pollen grains, numbers of germinating grains, and numbers of pollen tubes in the style. There is no inhibition of illegitimate pollen germination. Illegitimate pollen tubes are inhibited in the style. Incompatibility operates by a combination of dissortive pollination, dissortive pollen trapping, and stylar pollen tube inhibition. All heteromorphic features differing between pins and thrums are implicated in the inhibition of within-morph fertilization in thrums.  相似文献

Abstract. Adults of the eucalypt nectar fly, Drosophila flavohirta Malloch (Diptera: Drosophilidae), feed on Eucalyptus pollen. Flies of both sexes gather pollen with the proboscis, forming a large mass of pollen on the anterior surface of the extended proboscis. Pollen gathering alternates with quiescent periods when the moistened pollen load is continually vibrated. No pollen was found in the adult gut, and it is suggested that hydration of the pollen causes release of nutrients which are then imbibed. This 'external digestion' is reminiscent of that employed by heliconiine butterflies.  相似文献

Abstract: Bougainvillea stipitata displays inflorescences with three pendant greenish flowers. Flowers open at sunset and last five days. Flower perianth is constricted in the middle and forms a tube that ends in five lobes. Fragrance is emitted by the papillae located on the lobe margins of the perianth. The nectary is located at the base of the staminal tube. It secretes fructose-dominant nectar with amino acids, phenols and reduced acids. Nectar secretion is continuous during flower lifetime and the flowers do not recover the reward. Mainly moths visit flowers. Pollen load on stigmas indicates that most flowers received more than 50 pollen grains, which are deposited by pollinators within the first two days of the flower life. Although the low natural fruit set of this self-incompatible species may be due to intraplant pollen flow, pollinators play an essential role for B. stipitata fruit production.  相似文献

Summary We studied bumblebee foraging on two sympatrically and simultaneously flowering species, Melampyrum pratense (Scrophulariaceae) and Viscaria vulgaris (Caryophyllaceae) during the flowering season of Viscaria in south-west Sweden. We distinguished between healthy and Ustilago-infected Viscaria plants. Both species shared the main insect visitor, queens of Bombus hortorum, which collected nectar from both species but pollen from Melampyrum only. The pattern of visitation changed over the season: bumblebees preferred Viscaria early on, but changed to Melampyrum later in the season, probably because of the higher sugar content of Melampyrum nectar and the possibility of collecting both nectar and pollen from the same flower. Pollen collecting is probably of increasing importance since the need of pollen for the developing larvae will increase with time. Flowers of Viscaria received fewer visits in plots with other species than in pure Viscaria plots during one year and received more visits early than late in the season during both years. Melampyrum flowers received similar amounts of visits in mixed and pure environments. They also received more visits early than late, although this was probably a result of pollinator satiation since Melampyrum became very abundant with time. Ustilago-infected plants received far fewer visits but because of its long flowering time the proportion of open flowers receiving visits was still high. Viscaria flowers received significantly more visits than flowers of other species when bumblebees made heterospecific flower visits from Ustilago-infected plants; thus Ustilago spores were probably effectively dispersed from infected to healthy plants by the pollinators. The mechanism behind competition for pollination in this system was competition through pollinator preference, since the visitation rate to Viscaria actually decreased, but also competition through improper pollen transfer (grains of both species were found on the bodies of bumblebees) since the incidence of switching between the two species increased, probably resulting in an increased misplacement of conspecific pollen grains with time.  相似文献

New Zealand's short‐tailed bat (Mystacina tuberculata Gray, 1843) feeds on fruit, insects, and possibly nectar in North Island kauri (Agathis australis) forest. Fruits eaten by members of a colony of 500 bats in May included those of Freycinetia baueriana (Pandanaceae), Collospermum hastatum, and C. microspermum (Liliaceae). Pollen analyses of bat guano, and of the stomach contents of 4 short‐tailed bats from Omahuta Forest (Lat. 35°10'S) and 3 from Stewart Island and adjacent islands (Lat. 47°15'S), showed that most of the pollen was from flowers of Metrosideros and Leptospermum (Myrtaceae), Knightia excelsa (Proteaceae), and Collospermum, and that spores of the tree fern Cyathea (Cyatheaceae) were present also. Both Metrosideros and Knightia have abundant nectar. The partially extensile tongue of Mystacina is tipped with a brush of fine papillae, possibly to extract nectar and pollen; but the pollen and spores in the bat stomachs and guano could have come from insects eaten by the bats. Transverse ridges on the tongue may assist removal of juice from ripe fruits. These bats may disperse the small seeds of Freycinetia baueriana. The anatomical modifications of Mystacina for terrestrial and arboreal locomotion may have evolved primarily in response to its frugivorous and suspected nectarivorous habits.  相似文献

A method is described, based on the simultaneous turnover of both stable (18O) and radioactive isotopes (3H and 22Na), whereby the daily nectar and pollen intake of free-ranging marsupial honey possums (Tarsipes rostratus) may be estimated. The field metabolic rate is measured using doubly labelled water and nectar intake is estimated independently from the measured water and sodium fluxes. The method assumes that free-water intake is negligible (but may be accounted for if not the case), that virtually all dietary sodium is derived from nectar rather than from pollen, and that the animals are in energetic balance over the period of measurement. These assumptions have been tested and found to be robust, except during periods of heavy rain when significant intakes of free-water were recorded. Leaching experiments with pollen grains suggest that less than 10% of the sodium ingested by honey possums is derived from pollen and calculations thus assumed a 90%:10% split between nectar and pollen. Nectar intake averaged 5.9 ± 0.6 ml · day−1 and regressing nectar intake on daily change in body mass predicts an intake of approximately 7 ml · day−1 nectar to maintain balance for a 9 g honey possum. Estimates of pollen intake averaged 660 ± 156 mg · day−1 and a similar regression analysis of the data predicts that a daily intake of approximately 1 g pollen would be needed to maintain mass balance of honey possums. Estimated nectar and pollen intakes did not differ significantly between males and females, but nectar intake was higher in winter compared with dry periods of the year. The sugar content of nectar falls during winter, however, and the overall energy derived from nectar thus remains roughly constant. Estimates of pollen and nectar intake for individual animals were not significantly correlated, suggesting that honey possums forage selectively for these two food items. The pistil of Hypericum calycinum has a pentacarpellary, syncarpousovary with five slender styles, each terminating in a smallstigma. The stigma is dry and papillate with a thin lining ofpellicle. The pollen of hermaphrodite plants is often utilised by flower-visiting animals. While pollen production has obvious benefits for plant male fitness, its consequences for plant female fitness, especially in self-incompatible hermaphrodite species, are less certain. Pollen production could either enhance seed production though increased pollinator attraction, or reduce it if ovules are discounted by deposition of self pollen, as can occur in species with late-acting self-incompatibility. To test the effects of pollen reward provision on female fitness, we artificially emasculated flowers in two populations of the succulent Aloe maculata (Asphodelaceae), which has a late-acting self-incompatibility system, over the course of its flowering period. Flowers of this species are visited by sunbirds (for nectar) and native bees (for pollen and nectar). We measured floral visitation rates, floral rejection rates, pollen deposition on stigmas and fruit and seed set in both emasculated and non-emasculated plants. We found that flowers of emasculated plants suffered reduced visitation and increased rejection (arrival without visitation) by bees, but not by sunbirds; had fewer pollen grains deposited on stigmas and showed an overall decrease in fruit set and seed set. Rates of seed abortion were, however, greatly reduced in emasculated flowers. This study shows that pollen rewards can be important for seed set, even in self-incompatible plants, which have been assumed to rely on nectar rewards for pollinator attraction. Seed abortion was, however, increased by pollen production, a result that highlights the complexity of selection on pollen production in hermaphrodite flowers.  相似文献

In the present study, nectar and pollen sources for honeybee (Apls cerana cerana Fabr.) were studied in Qlnglan mangrove area, Hainan Island, China, based on microscopic analysis of honey and pollen load (corblcular and gut contents) from honeybees collected In October and November 2004. Qualitative and quantitative melittopalynologlcal analysis of the natural honey sample showed that the honey is of unlfloral type with Mimosa pudlca L. (Mlmosaceae) as the predominant (89.14%) source of nectar and pollen for A. cerana cerana In October. Members of Araceae are an Important minor (3%-15%) pollen type, whereas those of Arecaceae are a minor (〈3%) pollen type. Pollen grains of Nypa fruticans Wurmb., Rhlzophora spp., Excoecarla agallocha L., Lumnitzera spp., Brugulera spp., Kandella candel Druce, and Ceriops tagal (Perr.) C. B. Rob. are among the notable mangrove texa growing In Qinglan mangrove area recorded as minor taxa In the honey. The absolute pollen count (I.e. the number of pollen grains/10 g honey sample) suggests that the honey belongs to Group V (〉1 000 000). Pollen analysis from the corblcular and gut contents of A. cerana cerana revealed the highest representation (95.60%) of members of Sonneratia spp. (Sonneratlaceae), followed by Bruguiera spp. (Rhizophoraceae), Euphorblaceae, Poaceae, Fabaceae, Arecaceae, Araceae, Anacardlaceae, and Rublaceae. Of these plants, those belonging to Sonneratla plants are the most Important nectar and pollen sources for A. cerana cerana and are frequently foraged and pollinated by these bees in November.  相似文献

蒙古扁桃的植株可分为长花丝植株、短花丝植株和中花丝植株。群落花期约50d,单花花期约8d,分为露粉、微开、盛开、凋谢4个时期。过氧化物法测定4个时期花粉均具活力,可保持30d左右,联苯胺-过氧化氢测定柱头可授性,花粉活力与柱头可授性重叠,长花丝植株为8d左右,而中花丝约为5d。蒙古扁桃花一般在9:00开始泌蜜,11:00分泌量达到高峰,之后产蜜量减少直至停止,日泌蜜和散粉集中在10:00~14:00。蒙古扁桃开花受环境的影响。  相似文献

Low seed ovule ratios have been observed in natural populations of Polygala vayredae Costa, a narrowly endemic species from the oriental pre-Pyrenees. To evaluate physical and nutritional constraints and pollen tube attrition in this endemic species, stigma and style anatomy, as well as pollen tube development along the pistil were investigated using light and fluorescence microscopy. The structural morphology of the stigmatic region was also examined with scanning electron microscopy. Pollen grains that reached the stigmatic papillae came into contact with a lipid-rich exudate and germinated easily. Although a large number of pollen grains reach the stigmatic papillae, few pollen tubes were able to grow into the style towards the ovary. The style was hollow, with the stylar channel beginning a few cells below the stigmatic papillae. Initially, the stylar channel area was small compared to other levels of the style, and was surrounded by lipid-rich, highly metabolic active cells. Furthermore, lipid-rich mucilage was detected inside the stylar channel. At subsequent style levels towards the ovary, no major reserves were detected histochemically. The reduced intercellular spaces below the stigmatic papillae and the reduced area of the stylar channel at its commencement are suggested to physically constrain the number of pollen tubes that can develop. In subsequent levels of the style, the stylar channel could physically support a larger number of pollen tubes, but the lack of nutritional reserves cannot be disregarded as a cause of pollen tube attrition. Finally, the number of pollen tubes entering the ovary was greater than the number of ovules, suggesting that interactions occurring at this level play a major role in the final reproductive outcome in this species.  相似文献

The present study examines the cytological, physiological, chemical and ecological characteristics of pollen and nectar offered by male and female flowers of the dioecious plant Laurus nobilis. The various phases of floral phenology and the insect pollinators were observed. We used cytological methods to determine anther, pollen and nectary structure. Nectar sugar composition was evaluated by HPLC. Pollen viability in time was compared with cytoplasmic and intine water content. Pollen presentation was found to be reversible by opening and closing of anther valves, determined by hydration of the mechanical layer of the anther. Pollen, covered by pollenkitt, was presented for dispersal for 3 consecutive days and during this time the intine and cytoplasm lost water and pollen viability diminished. At germination exine ruptured together with the outermost layer of the intine. Nectaries of male flowers were observed on the anther filament and on staminodes of female flowers. The nectar consisted almost entirely of sucrose and was more concentrated in male flowers. Secreted through stomata, nectar was presented in a thin layer. In the study area, the main pollinators (about half the total number of all visits) were hymenopterans. Pollen is of the recalcitrant type due to its high water content (>30%) but its viability is long-lasting because the intine is thick and stores water, keeping the cytoplasm of the vegetative cell hydrated and viable, and because anther valves may close under adverse conditions, protecting the pollen. 金花茶分类系统尚未完善,金花茶又极具观赏价值,潜在价值极高,该研究应用扫描电镜观察三种金花茶花粉形态,即平果金花茶、直脉金花茶、金花茶,并运用数理统计和图片分析的方法对其花粉形态进行了探讨.结果表明:三种金花茶花粉均属于大花粉粒,花粉平均极轴在50μm以上,花粉极面观为钝凹三角形,萌发孔为三孔沟,即N3P4C5类型.平果金花茶与直脉金花茶花粉外壁纹饰为拟网状纹饰,平果金花茶网眼较密,网脊稍不平,直脉金花茶网脊稍隆起;金花茶为蠕虫状纹饰,短条状突起.花粉形态对其分类有重要意义,通过花粉外壁纹饰的类型可知金花茶与其二者亲缘关系较远,花粉形态各指标具有种间变异性,种内具有保守性,而平果金花茶和直脉金花茶花粉外壁纹饰相同但具体分类还需进一步研究.该研究结果为金花茶种质资源分类和利用提供了参考,在一定程度上促进了金花茶资源的开发和利用.  相似文献

1. Genetic polymorphisms of flowering plants can influence pollinator foraging but it is not known whether heritable foraging polymorphisms of pollinators influence their pollination efficacies. Honey bees Apis mellifera L. visit cranberry flowers for nectar but rarely for pollen when alternative preferred flowers grow nearby. 2. Cranberry flowers visited once by pollen‐foraging honey bees received four‐fold more stigmatic pollen than flowers visited by mere nectar‐foragers (excluding nectar thieves). Manual greenhouse pollinations with fixed numbers of pollen tetrads (0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32) achieved maximal fruit set with just eight pollen tetrads. Pollen‐foraging honey bees yielded a calculated 63% more berries than equal numbers of non‐thieving nectar‐foragers, even though both classes of forager made stigmatic contact. 3. Colonies headed by queens of a pollen‐hoarding genotype fielded significantly more pollen‐foraging trips than standard commercial genotypes, as did hives fitted with permanently engaged pollen traps or colonies containing more larvae. Pollen‐hoarding colonies together brought back twice as many cranberry pollen loads as control colonies, which was marginally significant despite marked daily variation in the proportion of collected pollen that was cranberry. 4. Caloric supplementation of matched, paired colonies failed to enhance pollen foraging despite the meagre nectar yields of individual cranberry flowers. 5. Heritable behavioural polymorphisms of the honey bee, such as pollen‐hoarding, can enhance fruit and seed set by a floral host (e.g. cranberry), but only if more preferred pollen hosts are absent or rare. Otherwise, honey bees' broad polylecty, flight range, and daily idiosyncrasies in floral fidelity will obscure specific pollen‐foraging differences at a given floral host, even among paired colonies in a seemingly uniform agricultural setting.  相似文献

Long-, mid-, and short-styled clonal accessions of oca (Oxalis tuberosa) were intercrossed in a complete diallelic design. Pollen tube growth in styles was monitored in all diallelic crosses. Pollen fertility was estimated by two tests: staining of pollen grains with aceto-carmine and detection of β-galactosidase activity by the substrate X-Gal. The two methods of pollen fertility estimation were equally useful to detect fertility levels. Pollen originating from short stamens had the highest fertility (85%) and pollen from long stamens had the lowest fertility (70%). Pollen fertility was high throughout, but its degree varied with the stylar morph on which the pollen was formed. Long-styled accessions had the highest rates of fertile pollen. Differences in pollen fertility at different anther levels in the same style morph were also apparent. Pollen grain diameter of the six morph-anther level combinations was inversely correlated with pollen fertility. Pollen grains from long stamens were the largest and pollen grains from short stamens were the smallest. Neither pollen fertility nor pollen grain size had an influence on pollen tube growth in the style or on fruit and seed set. Pollen tubes growing within the styles were inhibited at a different level for each of the 18 cross combinations in the diallel. Although legitimate crosses had greatest pollen tube growth, some of the illegitimate inter- and intramorph crosses had equally high scores. Of all illegitimate crosses, mid-styled seed parents had the lowest level of stylar incompatibility. Fruit and seed set were highly correlated with the extent of pollen tube growth in the style. The number of pollen tubes entering ovules in a flower was in good agreement with the number of seeds produced per fruit. Therefore, it is concluded that stylar incompatibility is the major determinant of limited seed formation in oca even in the most successful legitimate cross combinations.
