Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection caused by the Histoplasma capsulatum. Mucosal manifestations are uncommon, but, when present, they are usually associated with pulmonary or chronic disseminated infection. The course of the disease is often related to the host immune response. The purpose of this article is to describe the clinical and microscopic findings of unusual involvement of nasal cartilage and septal destruction, and oral lesions of histoplasmosis in an immunosuppressed patient who presented an unusual form of the disease.  相似文献

We report a case of chronic human pulmonary sporotrichosis which was not associated with superficial manifestations involving the skin or lymph nodes. As it is difficult to verify an etiology, it is possible that some undiagnosed pulmonary granulomas could represent pulmonary sporotrichosis of the chronic type. These may have been treated for other diseases, such as a mycobacterial infection as in this case. Since the immunodiffusion test is a simple procedure and is almost always positive in chronic disease, its greater utilization should help in defining this disease more frequently. The skin test, agglutination test and culture are variably useful as documented in the literature.Sporotrichosis is a common mycotic infection which is usually confined to the skin and superficial lymph nodes. In disseminated disease, the lung is very rarely involved. Pulmonary sporotrichosis then represents a second form of primary infection though less common than the lymphocutaneous disease. Scott et al. (18) reported two cases of pulmonary sporotrichosis. Ridgeway et al. (15) at about the same time reviewed the previously reported cases up to 1962 and concluded that 12 of the cases could be accepted as sporotrichosis and added two cases of their own. Subsequently, Siegrist & Ferrington (20) and Trevathan & Phillips (23) each reported a case. Presently, approximately 50 cases have been reported in the United States (1–10, 12, 13, 16). Chronic and acute involvement have been delineated by Ridgeway et al. (15) It is believed that the following case represents one of primary pulmonary sporotrichosis of the chronic type without manifest involvement of other organs.  相似文献

副结核分枝杆菌常引起感染牛的产奶量下降、持续性消瘦、顽固性下痢甚至死亡,给畜牧业带来了巨大的经济损失。牛通常在幼年期经口感染该菌并具有一个较长的亚临床期,后期才表现出临床症状,感染前期以细胞免疫为主并伴随着间歇排菌,经过一个2到5年的亚临床期后体液免疫应答增强,同时排菌量明显增加。目前对牛副结核病常用的检测方法有病原学检测方法,基于细胞免疫反应和基于体液免疫反应的检测方法。由于不同方法的反应原理不同,加之副结核分枝杆菌感染动物的特定免疫应答规律,在某一时间内各方法之间敏感性差异较大。本文简要阐述了牛副结核分枝杆菌的传播途径以及牛感染后的免疫应答特点,对牛副结核病的常见诊断方法进行了综述。  相似文献

Abstract We examined the potential of forest plantations to support communities of forest‐using insects when planted into an area with greatly reduced native forest cover. We surveyed the insect fauna of Eucalyptus globulus (Myrtaceae) plantations and native Eucalyptus marginata dominated remnant woodland in south‐western Australia, comparing edge to interior habitats, and plantations surrounded by a pastoral matrix to plantations adjacent to native remnants. We also surveyed insects in open pasture. Analyses focused on three major insect orders: Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera. Plantations were found to support many forest‐using insect species, but the fauna had an overall composition that was distinct from the remnant forest. The pasture fauna had more in common with plantations than forest remnants. Insect communities of plantations were different from native forest both because fewer insect species were present, and because they had a few more abundant insect species. Some of the dominant species in plantations were known forestry pests. One pest species (Gonipterus scutellatus) was also very abundant in remnant forest, although it was only recently first recorded in Western Australia. It may be that plantation forestry provided an ecological bridge that facilitated invasion of the native forest by this nonendemic pest species. Plantation communities had more leaf‐feeding moths and beetles than remnant forests. Plantations also had fewer ants, bees, evanioid wasps and predatory canopy beetles than remnants, but predatory beetles were more common in the understory of plantations than remnants. Use of broad spectrum insecticides in plantations might limit the ability of these natural enemies to regulate herbivore populations. There were only weak indications of differences in composition of the fauna at habitat edges and no consistent differences between the fauna of plantations adjacent to remnant vegetation and those surrounded by agriculture, suggesting that there is little scope for managing biodiversity outcomes by choosing different edge to interior ratios or by locating plantations near or far from remnants.  相似文献

Blastomycosis, disease caused by the thermally dimorphic fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis, occurs predominantly in the Midwest, south central, and northeastern United States. Spores from the environment are inhaled into the lungs where they may cause subclinical infection, acute or chronic pneumonia, or disseminated disease. The Infectious Diseases Society of America has recently published updated guidelines on the management of blastomycosis. Antifungal therapies that have proven effective for blastomycosis include itraconazole and amphotericin B. The lipid formulations of amphotericin B are preferred owing to reduced nephrotoxicity, especially when prolonged intravenous therapy is necessary. The more recently approved triazole voriconazole may play a greater role in treating blastomycosis, especially central nervous system disease, as more clinical data become available.  相似文献

By maintaining a forest-like structure, shaded cocoa plantations contribute to the conservation of ants that usually live in the soil, leaf litter or canopy of tropical forests. Here we synthesize the available information on the diversity and community structure of ants in shaded cocoa plantations in the Atlantic forest region of Brazil, compare ant assemblages in cocoa agroforests with forests and other forms of agriculture, and discuss how these shaded plantations contribute to the conservation of the ants in the Atlantic Forest region. We also discuss ants of economical importance and of special interest, including Camponotus, Dolichoderus, Gnamptogenys, Pachycondyla, Pseudomyrmex and other litter dwelling genera. We discuss the situation of the tramp ant Wasmannia auropunctata in the Bahian cocoa-producing region where it is considered as native, and that of the two cryptobiotic genera Thaumatomyrmex and Typhlomyrmex, as well as that of proven and possible endangered army ant and Ponerini species. A total of 192 ant species from four strata were found in extensive sampling of a cocoa plantation with a relatively simple shade canopy (comprised primarily of Erythrina). Species richness in the cocoa plantations corresponded roughly to that of low diversity native forests, and species composition of cocoa plantations was most similar to native habitats (forest and mangroves) while ant composition in other agricultural habitats was most similar to that of urban areas. Although occurrences of Wasmannia auropunctata were similar in cocoa plantations and forests, abundance of Thaumatomyrmex and Typhlomyrmex, generally thought to be rare ants, was relatively high in cocoa plantations. These results, from cocoa plantations with relatively simple shade, demonstrate the importance of cocoa for ant conservation in the Atlantic forest region of Brazil. It is likely that cocoa plantations with a greater number of vegetation strata and higher tree species richness (such as traditional cabruca plantations) provide even more important habitat for ants generally and for ant species of conservation concern.  相似文献

Urogenital infection with Chlamydia trachomatis can lead to development of an acute inflammatory arthritis, and this acute disease becomes chronic in some individuals. Research indicates that the organism is present in synovial tissue of patients with chronic disease in a persistent, rather than an actively growing, form. Importantly, metabolic and other characteristics of persistent Chlamydia differ from those of actively growing bacteria. Other studies suggest that Chlamydia pneumoniae can be found in a persistent state in the synovium and that it too may be involved in joint pathogenesis. These and other observations suggest a more complex role for the Chlamydiae in joint disease than previously recognized. This realization should engender a realignment of thinking among clinicians and researchers concerning both mechanisms of chlamydial pathogenesis in the synovium and design of new treatments for the disease.  相似文献

Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon is an economically important pathogen of corn (Zea mays L.) which causes stalk, root and ear rot. Several mycotoxins have also been isolated, identified and implicated in both animal and human toxicoses. The fungus can be disseminated in symptomless corn seed and can also survive in crop residues in the soil. Asymptomatic infection may be related to different corn cultivars, fungal strains, and environmental factors. Symptomatic expression of pathogenicity may vary, but usually the result of such infections is death of the plant. The greatest concern is the asymptomatic infection, since it is in this form that fungal toxins may surreptitiously enter animal and human food chains. F. moniliforme produces both fusaric acid, which is phytotoxic to corn and interferes with seed germination, and plant growth regulators that may affect pathogenicity of the fungus or be associated with the production of mycotoxins. Other metabolites, including fusarin C, moniliformin, and the fumonisins, may or may not be phytotoxic, but are associated with animal and human toxicoses. The control of F. moniliforme in corn is therefore quite important. One potential means to accomplish this reduction is biocontrol by the application of antagonistic rhizobacteria to corn kernels at planting. To be effective the bacteria must be able to colonize the corn root system and be able to prevent root infection by successful competing with F. moniliforme which may be accomplished by siderophore and or antibiotic activity.  相似文献

Protothecosis is an opportunistic infection caused by Prototheca, usually called as saprophytes, and is frequently found in natural and living surroundings with low virulence, but may cause chronic infection in immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of cutaneous protothecosis with zopfii var. portoricensis infection in a 66-year-old diabetic woman following hand surgery on middle right finger. Mycology study showed that smooth, creamy white, yeast-like colonies grown after necrotic tissue was cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar at both 37 and 25°C. The organism was then identified as Prototheca zopfii var. portoricensis by molecular identification and also found from histopathology of the lesion. The lesion got improved with intravenous amphotericin B and itraconazole.  相似文献

An isogenic pair of Yersinia enterocolitica serotype O9 strains, with and without virulence plasmid, was used to study the plasmid role in the infection of BALB/c mice by oral, intraperitoneal, and intravenous routes. The plasmid-bearing strain, but not its plasmid-less derivative, caused enteric infection after challenge by all three routes. The virulence plasmid did not influence the peritoneal clearance of yersiniae, but only the plasmid-bearing yersiniae were able to move from the peritoneal cavity to the bloodstream, and thus they spread to spleen and liver. Moreover, plasmid-bearing yersiniae were able to move from the liver to the gallbladder, and they shed in bile into the intestine. Western blot analysis of antibody responses to chromosomally encoded outer membrane proteins revealed similar patterns with sera from mice challenged with each one of the two strains by intraperitoneal route. In contrast, only the plasmid-bearing strain elicited an antibody response to these antigens in mice challenged by oral route. Although mice experimentally infected with plasmid-bearing O9 yersiniae developed an enteric infection, irrespective of the inoculation route, differences between the first steps in infection by oral and parenteral routes may be important, especially when the infection model is used as an approach to study the yersinia-host interactions. Background  

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic pathogen, is often encountered in chronic lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis or chronic obstructive pneumonia, as well as acute settings like mechanical ventilation acquired pneumonia or neutropenic patients. It is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in these diseases. In lungs, P. aeruginosa settles in a biofilm mode of growth with the secretion of exopolysaccharides in which it is encapsulated, enhancing its antibiotic resistance and contributing to the respiratory deficiency of patients. However, bacteria must first multiply to a high density and display a cytotoxic phenotype to avoid the host's defences. A virulence determinant implicated in this step of infection is the type III secretion system (TTSS), allowing toxin injection directly into host cells. At the beginning of the infection, most strains isolated from patients' lungs possess an inducible TTSS allowing toxins injection or secretion upon in vivo or in vitro activation signals. As the infection persists most of the bacteria permanently loose this capacity, although no mutations have been evidenced. We name "non inducible" this phenotype. As suggested by the presence of a positive feedback circuit in the regulatory network controlling TTSS expression, it may be due to an epigenetic switch allowing heritable phenotypic modifications without genotype's mutations.  相似文献

Differences in resistance to infection with beet yellows virus (BYV) and beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV) have been observed in virus-tolerant sugar-beet breeding material. The results of glasshouse virus-susceptibility tests usually agreed well with those of field experiments in which plants were exposed to artificial, or natural, infestation with viruliferous aphids. Breeding lines and varieties, which showed resistance to BYV when Myzus persicae Sulz, was used as vector, generally showed a similar resistance to this virus when Aphis fabae Scop. was used. Varieties which were resistant to infection with one virus were not necessarily resistant to the other, although some showed resistance to both BYV and BMYV. Preliminary results suggest that resistance to infection may be controlled by recessive genes which occur widely in sugar-beet cultivars. The mechanism of this form of resistance is not understood, but it does not appear to be closely associated with resistance to the aphid vectors of the viruses. The observed differences in resistance to infection demonstrate the possibility of breeding a sugar-beet variety in which two forms of resistance to virus yellows, tolerance and resistance to infection, are combined.  相似文献

为评价青藏高原东缘不同树种造林对土壤涵水能力的影响,选择立地条件与营林方式相同的4种人工林(连香树(Cercidiphyllum japonicum)、油松(Pinus tabulaeformis)、落叶松(Larix kaempferi)和华山松(Pinus armandii))为研究对象,以落叶阔叶灌丛为对照,比较造林恢复28 a后不同人工林土壤孔隙度及持水性的变化,结合林地凋落物贮量及细根生物量等参数,试图揭示造成不同人工林地土壤涵水能力及潜力差异化的因素。结果显示:营造油松和华山松纯林不仅没能有效改善土壤孔隙状况,反而加剧了土壤涵水功能的退化。相反,连香树和落叶松在代替次生落叶灌丛造林后,土壤容重显著下降,孔隙度增加且小孔隙比例升高,持蓄水能力提高。凋落物及细根特性是不同林地土壤持水性能差异的重要因素。综合分析表明,在对退化生态系统进行造林恢复时,应尽量避免营造高密度针叶纯林,应结合种植有助于土壤结构改良的落叶或阔叶树种。  相似文献

A strain of Mortierella wolfti isolated from a case of bovine mycotic abortion in the United Kingdom did not produce disease in mice when inoculated by the intraperitoneal, intramuscular, intravenous or subcutaneous routes. The current study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in the oral cavity of a Chinese population. Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to investigate whether individuals with oral H. pylori show more possibility of gastric infection and to examine the relationship between gastric H. pylori infection and the presence of the bacteria in the oral cavity. A total of 443 dyspeptic patients participated in the study. Gastric H. pylori infection was detected by the rapid urease test and histology with Giemsa staining, PCR, or smear examination, whereas the presence of the bacteria in the oral cavity was observed by nested PCR from dental plaque. Relevant periodontal and dental parameters were recorded in the process of oral examination. Of the 443 study patients, oral H. pylori was found in the dental plaque of 263 (59.4%) and the stomach of 273 (61.6%). Additionally, in all four age groups, the prevalence of gastric infection was significantly higher among the patients with positive tests for H. pylori in their dental plaque than in the patients with no H. pylori in their dental plaque (P < 0.05). The oral cavity may be a potential reservoir for H. pylori, and the prevalence of oral H. pylori approximated that of gastric H. pylori in the studied population. Furthermore, a close relationship may exist between H. pylori in the oral cavity and bacteria in the stomach or gastric infection, and dyspeptic patients with gastric infection are more likely to harbor H. pylori in their oral cavity. OBJECTIVE--To see whether there is a difference in outcome between patients treated with oral and intravenous antibiotics for lower respiratory tract infection. DESIGN--Open controlled trial in patients admitted consecutively and randomised to treatment with either oral co-amoxiclav, intravenous followed by oral co-amoxiclav, or intravenous followed by oral cephalosporins. SETTING--Large general hospital in Dublin. PATIENTS--541 patients admitted for lower respiratory tract infection during one year. Patients represented 87% of admissions with the diagnosis and excluded those who were immunocompromised and patients with severe life threatening infection. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Cure, partial cure, extended antibiotic treatment, change of antibiotic, death, and cost and duration of hospital stay. RESULTS--There were no significant differences between the groups in clinical outcome or mortality (6%). However, patients randomised to oral co-amoxiclav had a significantly shorter hospital stay than the two groups given intravenous antibiotic (median 6 v 7 and 9 days respectively). In addition, oral antibiotics were cheaper, easier to administer, and if used routinely in the 800 or so patients admitted annually would lead to savings of around 176,000 pounds a year. CONCLUSIONS--Oral antibiotics in community acquired lower respiratory tract infection are at least as efficacious as intraveous therapy. Their use reduces labour and equipment costs and may lead to earlier discharge from hospital.  相似文献

It is not necessary to resort to complete study in most cases of urinary tract infection. However, if the lesion is chronic or recurrent, associated with mixed organisms, complicated by lower tract involvement, accompanied by low total renal function, with or without abnormalities in a kidney-ureter-bladder x-ray film or in an intravenous urogram, then complete retrograde study should be carried out.A Gram stain will substitute for culture in most simple urinary tract infections and a trial of the agent of choice will act as a test of bacterial sensitivity. If the infection persists, however, more adequate bacteriologic studies are required.For good chemotherapeutic practice, it is important to: (1) Withhold the drug until it has been determined that obstruction, stone or other such lesion is not present; (2) watch for side effects and toxicity; and (3) give the best drug in large enough dosage for an adequate period of time.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation results in landscape configuration, which affects the species that inhabit it. As a consequence, natural habitat is replaced by different anthropogenic plantation types (e.g. pasture, agriculture, forestry plantations and urban areas). Anthropogenic plantations are important for biodiversity maintenance because some species or functional groups can use it as a complementary habitat. However, depending on plantation permeability, it can act as a barrier to the movement of organisms between habitat patches, such as forest fragments, reducing functional connectivity for many species. Anthropogenic plantations are becoming the most common land use and cover type in the Anthropocene and biodiversity conservation in fragmented landscapes requires information on how different plantation types affect the capacity of the species to move through the landscape. In this study, we evaluated the influence of the type and structure of plantations on the movement of two forest‐dependent understory bird species – plain antvireo (Dysithamnus mentalis) and flavescent warbler (Myiothlyps flaveola) – within a highly fragmented landscape of Atlantic Forest hotspot. Knowing that forestry plantation is assumed to be more permeable to dependent forest bird species than open ones, we selected six study areas containing a forest fragment and surrounding plantation: three with sugarcane plantation and three with Eucalyptus sp. plantation. We used playback calls to stimulate the birds to leave forest fragments and traverse the plantations. Control trials were also carried out inside the forest fragments to compare the distances crossed. We observed that individuals moved longer distances inside forest than between plantation types, which demonstrate that plantations do constrict the movements of both species. The two plantation types equally impeded the movements of the species, suggesting the opposite of the general assumption that forestry plantations are more permeable. Our results indicate that, for generalist species, plantation type does not matter, but its presence negatively impacts movement of these bird species. We highlight that plantations have negative influences on the movements of common bird species, and discuss why this is important when setting conservation priorities.  相似文献
