Assessment of smell function in clinical routine is often limited due to a lack of time and/or costs of the personnel administering the test. The aim of the present study was to validate a procedure allowing for self-administered olfactory testing in a clinical setting. Seventy-four healthy subjects (13 male, 61 female) from 18 to 30 years of age (mean 20.3 years) were tested on 2 days (interval 7-21 days, mean 8.7 days) with 16 odors of the "Sniffin' Sticks" identification test kit. On one occasion, the test was administered by an examiner. On another occasion, subjects administered the test to themselves, with the odors being identified after they had been "painted" on a sheet of paper. No significant differences were obtained between the results from both test procedures. With a maximum score of 16, assisted testing yielded a mean score of 13.7 [standard deviation (SD) 1.3] while the self-administered procedure yielded an average score of 13.8 (SD = 1.5) (P = 0.72). The mean difference between the assisted and the self-administered smell test procedures was 0.05 (SD = 1.28). The 95% confidence interval of differences ranged from -2.51 to 2.61. These results suggest that odor identification with the Sniffin' Sticks can also be administered by the subjects themselves.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability of a new anaerobic athletic performance system. This system is proposed to assess vertical jump height, anaerobic power through repetitive jumping, and reaction to both an auditory and visual stimulus. One hundred twenty-three subjects (92 men and 31 women; mean +/- SD: age, 20.5 +/- 2.1 years; body weight, 83.1 +/- 20.4 kg; height, 176.0 +/- 9.2 cm) volunteered to participate. To assess reliability of the new testing device, subjects were tested on 3 separate occasions (T1, T2, and T3). At least 72 hours but not more than 1 week separated each laboratory visit. During each testing session subjects performed a countermovement jump (CMJ), a 30 consecutive jumps anaerobic power test (30JT), and reaction to both an auditory and visual stimulus. Results showed no differences between T1, T2, and T3 in either CMJ height or 30JT assessments. However, reaction to an audible or visual stimulus significantly improved during each testing session. Intraclass reliability of the CMJ and the 30JT was greater than 0.96 across the 3 trials. Pearson correlation coefficients of r > 0.90 were seen for the CMJ and 30JT, indicating a high test-retest reliability. The test-retest reliability for the reaction tests were lower (r ranging from 0.72 to 0.83). A Bland-Altman plot showed limited agreement between methods of vertical jump height assessment. Results indicate that this new testing device shows high reliability to assess both CMJ height and anaerobic power. In addition, anaerobic power assessment in a jump test provides a specific measure of anaerobic power for many sports incorporating similar performance patterns.  相似文献

‘Sniffin’ Sticks' is a new test of nasal chemosensoryperformance based on pen-like odor dispensing devices. It comprisesthree tests of olfactory function, namely tests for odor threshold(n-butanol, testing by means of a single staircase), odor discrimination(15 pairs of odorants, triple forced choice) and odor identification(16 common odorants, multiple forced choice from four verbalitems per test odorant). After extensive preliminary investigationsthe tests were applied to a group of 104 healthy volunteers(52 female, 52 male, mean age 49.5 years, range 18–84years) in order to establish test-retest reliability and tocompare them with an established measure of olfactory performance(the Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center Test,CCCRC). Performance decreased with increasing age of the subjects(  相似文献

Recently, research on olfactory functions in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has become prominent, whereas gustation has never been investigated. Increased odor sensitivity was found in medication-na?ve children with ADHD, but not in adult ADHD, which might be due to a dopaminergic dysregulation presumed to underlie this disorder. Taste sensitivity, in particular bitter sensitivity as a hereditary trait, also might be altered in ADHD. To examine olfactory and gustatory functions in adult ADHD patients, we assessed odor sensitivity by Sniffin' Sticks, taste sensitivity by taste strips, and bitter sensitivity by the one-solution test in women with ADHD (n = 12), Bulimia Nervosa (n = 12), and healthy control women (n = 12). Bulimia Nervosa as second patient group was included to control for effects of impulsivity. Preliminary results indicate that ADHD patients were significantly more often classified as tasters, i.e. perceived the bitter taste as more intense, compared to both bulimic patients and healthy controls. No group differences were found with regard to general odor and taste sensitivity. It is proposed that the higher frequency of tasters in ADHD patients might underlie a genetic variation of the bitter receptor-dependent signaling pathway associated with ADHD.  相似文献

This study determined the test-retest reliability of Patrick's test as a hip range of motion assessment method. Fifty healthy college-aged men (mean age = 20.0 years) were studied during 2 testing sessions separated by 24 hours. A single inexperienced tester performed all the measurements in this study. Before data collection, the tester participated in a 15-minute instructional session on how to perform Patrick's test. To determine the range of motion associated with Patrick's test, the tester passively flexed, abducted, and externally rotated the hip of the lower extremity that was to be tested while subjects were in a supine position, so that the lateral malleolus of the tested lower extremity rested just superior to their opposite extended knee. The vertical distance between a mark on the lateral border of the patella of the tested lower extremity and the treatment table was then measured. The results revealed that Patrick's test demonstrated high test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.93). The results of this study support the use of Patrick's test as being a reliable measure of general hip motion when used by an inexperienced tester who participated in a 15-minute instructional session on how to perform Patrick's test.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the inter- and intra-examiner reliability, and stride-to-stride reliability, of an accelerometer-based gait analysis system which measured 3D accelerations of the upper and lower body during self-selected slow, preferred and fast walking speeds. Eight subjects attended two testing sessions in which accelerometers were attached to the head, neck, lower trunk, and right shank. In the initial testing session, two different examiners attached the accelerometers and performed the same testing procedures. A single examiner repeated the procedure in a subsequent testing session. All data were collected using a new wireless gait analysis system, which features near real-time data transmission via a Bluetooth network. Reliability for each testing condition (4 locations, 3 directions, 3 speeds) was quantified using a waveform similarity statistic known as the coefficient of multiple determination (CMD). CMD's ranged from 0.60 to 0.98 across all test conditions and were not significantly different for inter-examiner (0.86), intra-examiner (0.87), and stride-to-stride reliability (0.86). The highest repeatability for the effect of location, direction and walking speed were for the shank segment (0.94), the vertical direction (0.91) and the fast walking speed (0.91), respectively. Overall, these results indicate that a high degree of waveform repeatability was obtained using a new gait system under test-retest conditions involving single and dual examiners. Furthermore, differences in acceleration waveform repeatability associated with the reapplication of accelerometers were small in relation to normal motor variability.  相似文献

A growing body of research has focused on the P3 (P300) event-related potential as an electrophysiological correlate of selective attention. The present investigation examines the intrasubject test-retest reliability of the auditory evoked P3 latency measure for neurologically and audiologically normal young adults aged 22–34 years across test sessions separated by 2–4 weeks (N = 9) and across trials within one test session (N = 20). In a target-selection (‘oddball’) paradigm, subjects mentally counted infrequent 2 kHz tone bursts (targets) randomly interspersed within a sequence of 1 kHz tone bursts (non-targets). A strong positive correlation was demonstrated between latencies of test sessions I and II. An analysis of variance did not demonstrate statistically significant latency differences as a function of either tests of trials for the test-retest group (N = 9). Although analysis of variance demonstrated a statistically significant difference between trials within one test session for 20 subjects, the small mean latency difference between trials (4.7 msec) is interpreted as being clinically unimportant. The stability of P3 latency found in this study over a period of 2–4 weeks supports its application to the study of normal and disordered cognitive processes.  相似文献

Olfactory sensory stimulation induces a fast-phase arrest response (FPA-R) of the blowfly heart activity that has been described as a sensitive tool for testing insect reactivity to odor perception. We analyzed FPA-R occurrence to repeated olfactory stimulation with low and high 1-hexanol concentrations that are behaviorally attractant and repellent, respectively, in the blowfly. FPA-R occurrence diminished and ceased with repeated presentations of low and medium odor concentrations, according to dynamics inversely related to odor doses. On the other hand, repeated stimulation with higher odor concentrations induced persistent FPA-Rs. Sensory input amplitude to repeated presentations of singly tested odor concentrations did not change throughout stimulation sessions. A spontaneous restoration of FPA-R to olfactory stimulation was recorded 30 min after cessation of FPA-R to a previous olfactory stimulation session. However, a prompt restoration of FPA-R to olfactory stimulation after cessation of FPA-R was obtained following mechano-taste stimulation of labellar sensilla. Our findings show that the FPA-R habituates to olfactory sensory stimulation with low and medium odor concentrations according to dynamics inversely related to odor intensities. On the other hand, the FPA-R does not habituate to higher odor concentrations. Therefore, flies learn to disregard nonaversive odor information, but they cannot ignore iterative detection of a repellent volatile.  相似文献

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), a severe form of middle ear infection, affects most Australian Aboriginal children with up to 50% in some communities suffering hearing loss as a consequence. To date, there is no information on whether repeated exposure to the pathogens that characterize CSOM and that are present in the upper respiratory airway affect olfactory function. Accordingly, this study aimed to determine whether 1) there was a high prevalence of olfactory loss in Aboriginal children and 2) hearing loss is a predictor of olfactory loss. Two hundred and sixty one 9- to 12-year-old Aboriginal children from 16 rural communities reported to have high prevalences of CSOM and hearing loss were assessed for olfactory loss using a 16-odor identification test and hearing loss. One child was found to be anosmic, 4 were slightly hyposmic, and 42 had hearing loss. No relationship was found between olfactory loss and hearing loss. The test-retest reliability of the 16-odor identification test was 0.98. It was concluded that CSOM does not appear to affect olfactory function in the long term and that hearing loss in Aboriginal children is not a predictor of olfactory loss.  相似文献

Measurement of graded exercise test duration is clinically important and can be assessed by maximal graded exercise testing. Yet, limitations of maximal graded exercise testing exist. An alternative to maximal graded exercise testing is submaximal graded exercise testing. However, no studies have investigated the reliability of a submaximal graded exercise test in the measurement of graded exercise test duration. The purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability and minimal detectable change (MDC) of a novel submaximal graded exercise test in the measurement of graded exercise test duration. Fifteen people (4 men, 11 women) with a mean age of 26.20 years (SD = 9.04) participated in this study. A novel submaximal graded exercise test was used to measure graded exercise test duration for each participant. Endpoints of the test were either 85% of age-predicted maximum heart rate or voluntarily stopping the test, whichever endpoint occurred first. Heart rate and graded exercise test duration were constantly measured throughout the test. Graded exercise test duration was defined as the total duration (minutes) of the test. For all participants, the submaximal graded exercise test was conducted at baseline and 48-72 hours thereafter. The intraclass correlation coefficient for the test-retest reliability of the test in determining graded exercise test duration was 0.94 (95% CI = 0.83-0.98). The MDC of the test in the measurement of graded exercise test duration was 0.86 minutes. The results suggest that clinicians can use this novel submaximal graded exercise test to reliably measure graded exercise test duration with a measurement error, as expressed by the MDC, of 0.86 minutes.  相似文献

Despite the common use of standardised methods analysing neuromuscular function during knee extension, there is a lack of test-retest reliability studies. Furthermore, for most of the investigated variables it is unknown which changes of values indicate an enhancement of performance. The aim of the present study was to investigate performance-dependent variations of muscle functions during isometric contraction of knee extensors and to examine test-retest reliability of their measurement methods. For test-retest reliability sports students completed three test sessions. Highly skilled athletes, sports students and untrained subjects were investigated to determine the performance-dependent variations. The following variables were analysed: maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), voluntary activation (VA), absolute muscle reaction time (AR), muscle endurance (ME), and EMG frequency analysis (MF) of m. vastus lateralis (VL), m. vastus medialis (VM) and m. rectus femoris (RF). RESULTS TEST-RETEST-RELIABILITY: A high reliability between session 1 vs. 2 and session 2 vs. 3 was shown for MVC (ICC=0.92 and .97), VA (0.92/0.95) and ME (0.87/0.95). ICC in AR (0.23) was low between the first and second session and moderate between the second and third session (0.74). MF of VL, VM and RF showed low ICC between sessions. PERFORMANCE DEPENDENT VARIATIONS: Significant differences in nearly all variables (except VA) were found between trained (athletes and sports students) and untrained subjects.  相似文献

This study was performed to determine the test-retest reliability and the relationship between 2 tests of trunk flexor muscular endurance-a prone bridge and a modified V-sit. Hold times (in seconds) were measured on 60 healthy volunteers from a University community (17 men, 43 women). Both tests were performed at 1-week intervals. The test-retest reliability of each test was assessed with a subgroup of 10 participants during 3 additional testing sessions at 1-week intervals. One examiner collected all data. Intraclass correlation coefficients (2, 1) with the prone bridge were 0.95 and 0.71 with the modified V-sit. The mean hold time was 92.8 ± 44.4 seconds during the prone bridge and 141.7 ± 104.1 seconds during the modified V-sit. Pearson's correlation coefficients between the 2 tests ranged from r = 0.52 (men + women) to r = 0.87 (men only). Intersession reliability with a single examiner was higher with the prone bridge compared with that in the modified V-sit. Modifications to the V-sit resulted in a lower test-retest reliability than was previously reported. Correlations between prone bridge and modified V-sit test scores were low, which may be attributable to the differences in the level of trunk flexor muscle activation between the tests.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to evaluate the time-course of the familiarization process associated with a test of multiple sprint running performance and to determine the reliability of various performance indices once familiarization had been established. Eleven physically active men (mean age: 21 +/- 2 years) completed 4 multiple sprint running trials (12 x 30 m; repeated at 35-s intervals) with 7 days between trials. All testing was conducted indoors, and times were recorded by twin-beam photocells. Results revealed no apparent learning effects as evidenced by no significant (p > 0.05) between-trial differences in measures of fastest or mean 30-m sprint time. Within-subject test-retest reliability determined over 4 trials by coefficient of variation (CV) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) showed excellent reliability for measures of fastest and mean sprint times (CV range: 1.34-2.24%; ICC range: 0.79-0.94). Pre- and posttrial blood lactate concentrations showed good reliability when judged in context with typical values (CV range: 12.08-18.21%; ICC range: 0.72-0.78). In contrast, and in line with previous research, fatigue data showed much greater variability (CV: 26.43%; ICC: 0.66). The results of this study suggest that high degrees of test-retest reliability can be obtained in many multiple sprint running indices without the need for prior familiarization.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability of 4 single-leg horizontal hop tests (i.e., single hop for distance, triple hop for distance, crossover hop for distance, and 6-m hop for time), with a time interval of approximately 4 weeks separating the 2 testing sessions. Eighteen healthy, young, adult men, all cadets enrolled at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado, performed the single hop for distance, the triple hop for distance, the crossover hop for distance, and the 6-m hop for time during 2 testing sessions separated by 31.2 +/- 0.4 days. Reliability data for each of the single-leg hop tests were studied through a repeated measures analysis of variance, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), and standard errors of measurement (SEMs). The ICCs ranged from 0.92 to 0.97 for the 4 single-leg hop tests. The SEMs for the single-leg hop tests that assessed the distance hopped ranged from 4.61 to 17.74 cm. The SEM for the 6-m hop for time test was 0.06 seconds. No significant differences were noted when the mean scores of the 2 test trials were compared by a repeated measures analysis of variance for any of the single-leg hop tests. These results indicate that the single-leg hop tests examined in this study offer strength and conditioning professionals a reliable method to assess the single-leg horizontal hopping capabilities of healthy, young, adult men, with intervals of approximately 4 weeks between testing sessions.  相似文献

A study was designed to investigate the intra and intersession reliability during 1-leg standing recorded from a computerized balance platform. Thirty-nine healthy young men (n = 17, age range: 20-30 years) and women (n = 22, age range: 21-28 years) performed 3 testing sessions, with the second session 30 minutes (intrasession comparison) and the third session 1 week (intersession comparison) after the initial testing session. Within each testing session, participants completed 3 trials of 1-leg standing with their dominant leg. Reliability statistics were calculated using the mean of all 3 trials during each session for 6 balance measures (i.e., total displacements of the center of pressure [CoP], the CoP displacements in mediolateral and anterior-posterior directions, and the CoP speed and CoP area and their SD). Test-retest reliability was examined calculating both, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) and Bland-Altman plots. In both sexes and irrespective of balance measure, ICC values were ≥0.75 except for 1 parameter in men. This indicates an excellent intra and intersession reliability. Bland-Altman plots confirmed these findings by showing that only 1 or 2 (4.5-11.8%) of the data points were beyond the 95% CI. Practitioners and clinicians are provided with a posturographic test setup that proved to be reliable. Researchers can use these data to identify the range in which the true value of a subject's score lies and estimate a priori sample sizes.  相似文献

Background: Test–retest reliability is important to establish for any diagnostic tool. The reliability of quantitative sensory testing (QST) in the trigeminal region has recently been described in Caucasians as well as differences in absolute thresholds and responses between Caucasians and Chinese. However, the test–retest reliability has not been determined in a Chinese population.

Objective: To provide novel information on the test–retest reliability of thermal QST in the trigeminal and spinal system in healthy Chinese.

Methods: Twenty healthy volunteers (10 women and 10 men) participated. Cold detection threshold (CDT), warm detection threshold (WDT), cold pain threshold (CPT), and heat pain threshold (HPT) were measured at two sites: the surface of the left hand and the left masseter. The testing was performed over three consecutive stimuli trials, three sessions conducted on one day and repeated one week later. Data were analyzed with intra-tester reliability test and four-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures.

Results: There was a tendency for the first trial in CDT (p?=?0.005), CPT (p?=?0.02), and HPT (p?p?=?0.003) and HPT (p?=?0.045) with higher sensitivity at the masseter muscle. There were significant gender differences with higher sensitivity in women for CPT (p?=?0.001) and HPT (p?=?0.001).

Conclusion: Test site and gender affect thermal thresholds substantially. The test–retest reliability of most thermal threshold measures were acceptable for assessing somatosensory function, however, innocuous thresholds appear to be associated with larger variability than noxious thresholds in a Chinese population.  相似文献

Threshold is defined as the stimulus intensity necessary for a subject to reach a specified percent correct on a detection test. MLPEST (maximum likelihood parameter estimation by sequential testing) is a method that is able to determine threshold accurately and more rapidly than many other methods. Originally developed for human auditory and visual tasks, it has been adapted for human olfactory and gustatory tests. In order to utilize this technique for olfactory testing in mice, we have adapted MLPEST methodology for use with computerized olfactometry as a tool to estimate odor detection thresholds. Here we present Monte Carlo simulations and operant conditioning data that demonstrate the potential utility of this technique in mice, we explore the ramifications of altering MLPEST test parameters on performance, and we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using MLPEST compared to other methods for the estimation of thresholds in rodents. Using MLPEST, we find that olfactory detection thresholds in mice deficient for the cyclic nucleotide-gated channel subunit A2 are similar to those of wild-type animals for odorants the knockout animals are able to detect.  相似文献

Long-term potentiation of synaptic transmission is considered to be an elementary process underlying the cellular mechanism of memory formation. In the present study we aimed to examine whether or not the dendrodendritic mitral-to-granule cell synapses in the carp olfactory bulb show plastic changes after their repeated activation. It was found that: (1) the dendrodendritic mitral-to-granule cell synapses showed three types of plasticity after tetanic electrical stimulation applied to the olfactory tract—long-term potentiation (potentiation lasting >1 h), short-term potentiation (potentiation lasting <1 h) and post-tetanic potentiation (potentiation lasting <10 min); (2) Long-term potentiation was generally induced when both the dendrodendritic mitral-to-granule cell synapses and centrifugal fiber-to-granule cell synapses were repeatedly and simultaneously activated; (3) long-term enhancement (>1 h) of the odor-evoked bulbar response accompanied the electrically-induced LTP, and; (4) repeated olfactory stimulation enhanced dendrodendritic mitral-to-granule cell transmission. Based on these results, it was proposed that long-term potentiation (as well as olfactory memory) occurs at the dendrodendritic mitral-to-granule cell synapses after strong and long-lasting depolarization of granule cells, which follows repeated and simultaneous synaptic activation of both the peripheral and deep dendrites (or somata).  相似文献

This study aimed to compare the reliability and magnitude of conditioned pain modulation (CPM) by applying different test stimuli (TS) and conditioning stimuli (CS). Twenty-six healthy male participants were recruited in the study of two identical sessions. In each session, four TS (electrical, heat, handheld, and cuff pressure algometry) were applied before and during CS (cold pressor test (CPT) or cuff algometry). The same procedure was repeated with 45-min intervals, but with the other CS. Five thresholds were measured including four pain detection thresholds from four TS and pain tolerance threshold from cuff TS (cuff PTT). Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC (3,1)) and coefficient of variation (CV) were calculated as measures of reliability. The reliability of TS before and during CS was good for all combinations (ICC: 0.60–0.96, CV: 2.2–22.9%), but the reliability of the CPM effect varied (ICC: 0.04–0.53, CV: 63.6–503.9%). The most reliable combinations were considered to be the handheld pressure pain threshold with CPT (ICC: 0.49, CV: 63.6%) and the cuff pressure pain threshold with CPT (ICC: 0.44, CV: 107.6%). Significant CPM effects were found for all combinations, except the combinations of electrical and heat pain thresholds with cuff CS, which indicates the novel classification of the CPM mechanism. The combinations of handheld pressure and heat pain threshold with CPT would provide the minimum sample size to detect the significant CPM changes in further studies. It is beneficial to provide and compare both ICC and CV to design further clinical trials.  相似文献
