Annular seabream, Diplodus annularis (Linnaeus, 1758), were caught off the coast of the Gulf of Gabes (Southern Tunisia, Central Mediterranean) between April 2008 and March 2010 by commercial catches. With a total 2066 specimens the fish ranged in size from 7.7 cm to 18.5 cm total length and from 7.5 g to 123.3 g in weight. Changes in biological parameters (weight, length, gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and condition factor) were examined in order to provide information on the spawning period and reproductive cycle in the gulf. Overall sex ratio was 1 : 1.52 in favour of females. The reproductive season extends from March to June, with a spawning activity peak in May. Total length at sexual maturity was 10.5 ± 0.22 cm (males) and 10.6 ± 0.3 cm (females). The results of this study could help to establish a recommended minimum capture size.  相似文献

The present study aimed at assessing the annual reproductive cycle of female Arabian carpetshark, Chiloscyllium arabicum from the Persian Gulf by a macroscopic and microscopic evaluation of the reproductive tract. The annual cycle of gonadal steroids [17β-estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4) and testosterone (T)] was also assessed in this shark. In total, 130 female C. arabicum were collected from the Bahrakan Creek (located northwest of the Persian Gulf) between January 2018 and March 2019. Females were oviparous with an external-type ovary and only one functional ovary. Five sexual maturity stages were recognized based on macroscopic and microscopic evaluation: Immature I (August–October), Immature II (November–January), Mature (February–March), Pregnant (April–May) and Spent (June–July). The structural changes in the oviducts, oviducal glands and uterus throughout the annual reproductive cycle were consistent with their roles in the egg movement, the egg capsule production and sperm storage. The plasma levels of the gonadal steroids were associated with morphological changes in the reproductive tract. E2 showed two detectable peaks during March (close to ovulation) and June (just before mating). P4 and T displayed a peak just before ovulation.  相似文献

The oocytes at different stages of development were characterized morphometrically, and seasonal changes in female gonads of the Far-eastern edible holothurian Cucumaria japonica (Semper, 1868) from the Peter the Great Bay were described. Groups of oocytes and categories of sexual tubules corresponding to different stages of development of gonads were distinguished. Free laying oocytes were divided into several groups, i.e., oocytes 3, 4 and 5. The greatest size of C. japonica oocytes was 460 μm. In various seasons of the year there was greater growth of oocytes in the gonads, which reached its maximum volume during reproduction of the holothurians. The gonads developed asynchronously. All the stages of development were observable simultaneously in the gonads of each individual of this species during the reproductive cycle, and the stage of fast growth prevailed. C. japonica spawned twice a year, in May–June and from July to October. Unreleased oocytes were subjected to resorption.  相似文献

Groups of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri) that are exposed to certain seasonal environmental stimuli experience a yearly reproductive cycle with discrete mating and birth seasons. Seasonal rainfall or some rainfall induced seasonal changes (such as changes in vegetation or insect fauna) appear to be responsible for timing theSaimiri reproductive cycle. Animals of both sexes show significant physiological and behavioral changes during the yearly cycle. Whether the environmental timing factors affect both the males and the females equally, or affect only one sex directly and the other sex indirectly through social communication is not clear. Three mechanisms by which the reproductive activity of both males and females could be synchronized are presented, and data from a laboratory study and a field study relevant to each mechanism are presented. Several social interaction patterns frequently observed in the field study suggest that (1) male sexual activity may excite female sexual activity through male penile display and/or other stereotyped interactions and/or (2) female sexual activity may excite male sexual activity through pheromone and/or other communication channels.  相似文献

This work focuses on aspects of reproductive biology of Sardina pilchardus from the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The mean values of batch fecundity estimated for the species is 23150(+/-1301) oocytes for a mean size of 19.5(+/-0.49) cm, the mean relative fecundity being 346(+/-7.34) oocytes per gram of female without ovary. Batch fecundity increases with total length and body weight without ovary. Sizes at first sexual maturity (L50) are reached for males and females at 15.8(+/-0.29) cm and 15.8(+/-0.35) cm, respectively. The spawning period for the population extends between October and July and the spawning peak occurs from October to February. However, the small sardines (14.5-17 cm) in their first reproduction spawn between November and June, whereas larger fish (17.5-25 cm) spawn between October and July. The factor of condition (K) increased in summer during the sexual resting phase. It is weak in winter during the period of reproduction. Regarding, the sex ratio, there was no significant difference in the number of males and females.  相似文献

In many anthropoid primates, mating activity is not restricted to the ovarian cycle but also occurs during pregnancy. Although it has been suggested that the main function of this post-conception mating is to confuse paternity, studies showing whether or not male primates can distinguish between the fertile phase of the conception cycle (FPCC) and the period of peak post-conception mating (peak PCM) are almost non-existent. Here, we examine whether the pattern of female sexual traits (specific sexual behaviors, sexual swelling) and female attractiveness to males differ between FPCC and peak PCM in 6 wild female long-tailed macaques. We also use fecal hormone analysis to investigate whether female traits during peak PCM are related to changes in female sex hormones. All females exhibited a distinct period of heightened mating activity around days 45-60 of gestation. During peak PCM, swelling size and frequency of female solicitations (but not reaching back) were significantly correlated with changes in the estrogen to progestogen ratio. Swelling size, frequency of female sexual behaviors and copulations and proportion of male-initiated copulations and ejaculations were not significantly different between FPCC and peak PCM. Although males spent significantly less time consorting females during peak PCM, all (particularly low-ranking and non-resident males) invested heavily in terms of reproductive costs associated with mate-guarding and mating during pregnancy. We conclude that post-conception mating in wild long-tailed macaques is not merely a by-product of endocrine changes and devoid of adaptive function. Our results more strongly support the hypothesis that it may form part of a female reproductive strategy to confuse paternity, which appears to apply particularly to low-ranking and extra-group males.  相似文献

This study is the first attempt to survey the diversity of fish digeneans in the Gulf of Gabes (southern coast of Tunisia). A total of 779 fishes belonging to 32 species were sampled. 53 species of Digenea belonging to 15 families were recorded. Among these species, 24 are reported for the first time from the coast of Tunisia. We report one new host record, Lecithochirium sp. from Sardinella aurita. The Hemiuridae is the dominant family. A host-parasite list is presented with the information on the prevalence, abundance and mean intensity of each species collected. The diversity of Digenea is compared with other localities in the Mediterranean Sea and the northern east of Tunisia. The Gulf of Gabes shows the lowest diversity linked to the anthropogenic activities and impact of exotic species. The use of Digenea as indicators of the state of the ecosystem is discussed.  相似文献

In this study, we quantitatively examined male sexual behavior in relation to fecal estrogen and progesterone concentrations in female Mohor gazelles. We investigated the hypothesis that, during natural mating, males detect cues relating to the potential for successful conception and pregnancy. Time series analysis revealed that males could detect the approach of estrus 2-3 days before female fecal estrogens and estrogen/progestagen (E/P) ratio reached their peak values. Males also paid closer attention to those females excreting higher fecal estrogen concentrations. Mounting and copulation frequencies were positively correlated with both peri-ovulatory fecal estrogen concentrations, and the frequency of pre-copulatory courtship behaviors. These data suggested that males invest their reproductive effort selectively by mating the most fertile females, assuming that estrogen is a valid index of fertility. This assumption was investigated by examining sequential phases of the reproductive cycle for evidence that oocytes and follicles produced in a more estrogenic environment would lead to the formation of the most competent corpora lutea, thereby maximizing the chance of sustaining pregnancy. Associations between sexual behavior and hormone excretion support the hypothesis that males may use this mechanism to assess female fertility.  相似文献

Understanding how selection acts on traits individually and in combination is an important step in deciphering the mechanisms driving evolutionary change, but for most species, and especially those in which sexual selection acts more strongly on females than on males, we have no estimates of selection coefficients pertaining to the multivariate sexually selected phenotype. Here, we use a laboratory‐based mesocosm experiment to quantify pre‐ and post‐mating selection on female secondary sexual traits in the Gulf pipefish (Syngnathus scovelli), a sexually dimorphic, sex‐role‐reversed species in which ornamented females compete for access to choosy males. We calculate selection differentials and gradients on female traits, including ornament area, ornament number and body size for three episodes of selection related to female reproductive success (number of mates, number of eggs transferred and number of surviving embryos). Selection is strong on both ornament area and ornament size, and the majority of selection occurs during the premating episode of selection. Interestingly, selection on female body size, which has been detected in previous studies of Gulf pipefish, appears to be indirect, as evidenced by a multivariate analysis of selection gradients. Our results show that sexual selection favours either many bands or larger bands in female Gulf pipefish.  相似文献

Javan gibbons (Hylobates moloch) are one of the most endangered gibbon species in the world. Data on the reproductive biology of the species are almost nonexistent, and a general understanding of the female reproductive biology of this species is important for both ex situ and in situ conservation. Using 18 years of data from 11 captive individuals, we provide new information on the reproductive biology of Javan gibbons based on sexual swelling and menstrual bleeding, including reproductive development, interbirth intervals, and ovarian cycle lengths. Menarche and the onset of sexual swelling occurred at 6.2 and 6.5 years respectively, followed by a period of adolescent sterility of about 1.5 years. Average age at first birth was 8.8 years, and interbirth intervals were about 2.3 years, decreasing to 1.0 year during cases of infant mortality at or shortly after birth. Ovarian cyclicity was measured through periods between menstrual bleeding and sexual swelling. Menstrual bleeding indicates the start of a new ovarian cycle, while sexual swelling normally occurs near the time of ovulation. Menstrual bleeding intervals gave a cycle length of 25.6 days, while sexual swelling intervals gave a cycle length of 27.3 days. These both correspond closely to cycle lengths in other gibbon species, as well as hormonal studies in Javan gibbons. In particular, observing the presence/absence of swellings was found to be a useful and easy method to monitor female ovarian cycles, and could be a practical noninvasive technique for caretakers and researchers. The sexual cycle of Siberian salamander females (Salamandrella keyserlingii Dybowski 1870) has been studied in the tundra of the northern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. Spawning starts soon after the end of wintering (in the second half of May) and ends up in the first half of June. At the end of June, the ovaries show obvious features of a new ovogenic cycle; i.e., pigment starts accumulating in large vitellogenic oocytes. By the end of July, the ovaries in most individuals are already filled with pigmented follicles and the oviduct epithelium is restored. The time from spawning to the appearance of a new generation of mature oocytes lasts a little more than two months (i.e., half of the whole activity season). In the second half of August, the state of the genital system is identical to that in spring before spawning, this proving their annual reproduction. The average fecundity in the studied water bodies varies from 102 to 123 eggs and is comparable to that in other parts of the distribution range. Oogenesis both in the vast majority of females that reach pubescence (subadultus) and in those that spawn in spring occurs simultaneously, but in some subadults it is completed almost a month or a month and a half earlier. By this phenological feature, the female subadults differ considerably from the male subadults, in which completion of spermatogenesis extends much more strongly into the season. A study of the ecology of the Siberian salamander in the conditions of a short season of activity with low temperatures allows for the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk to be considered not as extreme, but, in contrast, rather favorable for its habitation. Many population characteristics in this area are typical for the species in general. The main features of the male and female sexual cycles appear to be similar to those observed in species of the same family that live in the south of the region. The short period of germinal cell development, coupled with the outstanding winter cold hardiness of the species, partially accounts for its unique adaptive potential, which allows it to colonize vast territories of northern Eurasia and successfully thrive in the territories with short and cold summer period.  相似文献

Sclerasterias richardi, a relatively deep sea asteroid (140–200 m) from the border of the Mediterranean continental shelf, is characterized by an asexual reproduction by fissiparity concomitant with a functional sexuality.

A monthly sampling of a population from Calvi (Corsica) has allowed a study of the complete sexual cycle from 354 histologically-treated specimens.

The 218 sexually defined animals (62% males, 38% females) show strict gonochorism. In males, spermatogenesis is cyclic and sexual maturity seems to be reached before that of the females. In females, the different stages of oogenesis are well marked: oogonia and parietal oocytes disappear only at maturity. Oligolecithic oocytes (120–150 μn) show a synchronous growth.

The annual reproductive cycle is well defined in both sexes with one spawning period from mid-September to mid-October.

After spawning, a resting period (from mid-October to mid-January) occurs during which unspawned oocytes are phagocytized by more or less isolated accessory cells. These phagocytic cells have never been found in male specimens.

Each month the presence of specimens without gonads or unsexable individuals is one of the characteristics of this cycle. Their high proportion during the organization stage and after spawning can be easily explained. In March they are frequent too, owing to the infestation of gonads by Ciliates.

As shown by our samples, the bottom water temperature is nearly the same during the whole year and cannot be directly involved as the dominant exogenous variable stimulating spawning.

As a consequence of fissiparity which affects the main part of the population there is a great inter- and intra-individual variability.

The reproductive potentiality is low: as a female emits approximatly 400–500 ova whose development produces planktotrophic larvae with a long pelagic life, it is clear that sexual reproduction is accessory in comparison with asexual reproduction by fission.  相似文献

Many reports have claimed that the duration of the swelling cycle in female bonobos (Pan paniscus) is longer than that of chimpanzees, and that the bonobo maximum swelling phase is markedly prolonged. Field data on intermenstrual intervals (IMIs) in female bonobos are limited and restricted to interswelling intervals (ISIs), which are assumed to reflect the IMI, though a direct comparison between the duration of ISIs and IMIs is still lacking. Reports on bonobo sexual activity as a function of the swelling phase are often contradictory. Moreover, the function of female homosexual interactions (genito-genital (GG) rubbing) is still debated. This study examines the reliability of the ISI as an approximation of the IMI, and the attractivity of female sexual swellings for other individuals. An analysis of 51 ISI-IMI pairs showed that ISIs are a fair representation of the reproductive cycle. The cycle length was 35.6+/-1.1 SE days relying on the ISI, whereas it was 35.0+/-1.1 SE days considering the IMI. This result is similar to the cycle length reported for chimpanzees. Female homosexual interactions and copulatory rates were higher during maximum tumescence, suggesting that the sexual swelling may be attractive for both males and other females. Furthermore, the GG-rubbing was performed free of a hierarchical postural imposition, and was not correlated with affinitive interactions. We suggest that GG-rubbing, which is generally the most frequent female sexual interaction, is a tool for social assessments among females.  相似文献

This study describes the male reproductive cycle of Sibynomorphus mikanii from southeastern Brazil considering macroscopic and microscopic variables. Spermatogenesis occurs during spring–summer (September–December) and spermiogenesis or maturation occurs in summer (December–February). The length and width of the kidney, the tubular diameter, and the epithelium height of the sexual segment of the kidney (SSK) are larger in summer–autumn (December–May). Histochemical reaction of the SSK [periodic acid‐Schiff (PAS) and bromophenol blue (BB)] shows stronger results during summer–autumn, indicating an increase in the secretory activity of the granules. Testicular regression is observed in autumn and early winter (March–June) when a peak in the width of the ductus deferens occurs. The distal ductus deferens as well as the ampulla ductus deferentis exhibit secretory activities with positive reaction for PAS and BB. These results suggest that this secretion may nourish the spermatozoa while they are being stored in the ductus deferens. The increase in the Leydig cell nuclear diameter in association with SSK hypertrophy and the presence of sperm in the female indicate that the mating season occurs in autumn when testes begin to decrease their activity. The peak activity of Leydig cells and SSK exhibits an associated pattern with the mating season. However, spermatogenesis is dissociated of the copulation characterizing a complex reproductive cycle. At the individual level, S. mikanii males present a continuous cyclical reproductive pattern in the testes and kidneys (SSK), whereas at the populational level the reproductive pattern may be classified as seasonal semisynchronous. © J. The reproductive features of Spondyliosoma cantharus were studied in the Gulf of Tunis to contribute to better fisheries management on a regional scale and to broaden knowledge on whether there are actual performance differences compared to others areas. A total of 369 fish were caught by trammel and gill nets in the Gulf of Tunis from January 2005 to June 2006. Sex‐ratio, gonad maturation, size and age at maturity, sexual cycle, condition and reproductive strategy were determined. The male : female ratio was initially skewed in favour of females, with males predominating in larger sizes. Length of females at first maturity was 17.8 cm TL (n = 141), which corresponds to 4 years of age. A recommendation is made to increase the length at capture. Spawning season extends from January to May, with a peak in March–April correlated to the lowest sea surface temperatures (14.8–15.6°C); during this period, a dichromatism arises between males and females. The hepatosomatic index and the condition factor present significant monthly changes in relation to the breeding activity. The bimodal size frequency distribution, the biased sex ratio, and the presence of bisexual gonads outline a protogynous hermaphroditism; diandry should be confirmed.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of female Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus was studied throughout an annual cycle from January to December 2007 in Pagasitikos Gulf, a large semi-enclosed Gulf in the central west Aegean Sea, in Greece. Six ovarian maturation stages were described to follow gonadal development, based on the combined external observation and histological examination of the ovary. Reproduction showed clear seasonality both in terms of ovarian maturation and brooding period. The proportion of fully mature females in the catch increased from January to the summer months with a peak in June. The species has a protracted brooding period that peaks in November and December, while the release of eggs from females' pleopods occurs from January to March. The size at which 50% of females reached sexual maturity was estimated, using a logistic model, to be 28.1 mm of carapace length. The undiscovered reproductive dynamics will be valuable for optimizing population models and management strategies for this important fishery resource.  相似文献

We observed the presence of follicular cells (FC) in the ovaries of Penaeus subtilis (n = 1198), which led us to classify the development of germ cells into six phases: oogonia, previtellogenic oocytes, primary and secondary vitellogenic oocytes, mature oocytes and atretic oocytes. The FC changes their shape according to the development of germ cells and showed a different distribution along the ovary, which allowed differentiating vitellogenic oocytes into primary and secondary. We also observed that the postovulatory follicles (POF) are composed of follicular cells. The presence of POF in penaeids ovaries is rarely reported, but allows the differentiation between spent and resting stages, commonly grouped in reproductive biology research. Furthermore, observation of ovarian lining was useful to differentiate immature females from females that had spawned at least once. Thus, ovarian development was classified into six stages: immature, early developing, advanced developing, ripe, spent and resting. The distribution and shape variations of FC, ovarian lining features and presence of POF were considered crucial for the classification of ovarian maturation stages. The methods developed here may improve estimates of their reproductive cycle, size at first maturity and spawning season, which are important variables in future studies of the reproductive dynamics.  相似文献

The extent to which catharrine primate males are able to discern the fertile phase during the female ovarian cycle under natural conditions is still debated. In a recent study, we showed that wild male long-tailed macaques are able to detect the fertile phase, but the cues males used to assess female reproductive status remained unclear. In the present study, we tested female sex skin swelling and specific female behaviors for their reliability in signaling the fertile phase, as determined by measurement of fecal estrogens (E) and progestogens (P) during nine ovulatory cycles in seven free-ranging females. We found that changes in sex skin swellings showed a significant positive correlation to the E/P ratio, but swelling size did not significantly differ between cycle phases. In contrast, the frequency of two of the tested female behaviors, namely initiation of sexual interactions and reaching back for the male during copulation, was not only correlated with female reproductive hormones, but was significantly elevated during the fertile phase compared to nonfertile phases of the cycle. We thus conclude that female sex skin swelling does not reliably indicate the timing of the fertile phase in long-tailed macaques, whereas certain female behaviors do. Since cycles differed considerably in the number of males with which females had sexual interactions as well as in the number of sexual interactions with dominant males, the signaling character of these specific female behaviors appears to be robust against inconsistencies in these social variables. Female behavior might therefore play an important role in the recognition of the fertile phase by male macaques under natural conditions.  相似文献

The gametogenic cycle and number of spawning seasons per year of the female Chlamys (Azumapecten) farreri farreri were investigated by qualitative and quantitative analyses, and also the size at 50% of group sexual maturity (the size of first sexual maturity) was calculated to inform natural living resource management. In qualitative histologic analysis, the gametogenic cycle of this species can be classified into five successive stages: early active stage, late active stage, ripe stage, partially spawned stage, and spent/inactive stage. The spawning season occurs annually from July to September. In quantitative statistical analysis using an image analysis system, the patterns of monthly changes in reproductive cells were shown to be maximum in June and then dropped sharply from July to September. From these data, it is apparent that the C. (A.) farreri farreri has a unimodal annual gametogenic cycle. Shell heights at 50% of group sexual maturity were estimated as 51.47?mm and was 100% for scallops over 61.0?mm.  相似文献
