The abundance and distribution of nematodes, rotifers and tardigrades in samples from nunataks in continental Antarctica were investigated during four Antarctic expeditions in the austral summers of 1991/92, 1993/94, 1996/97 and 2001/02. Altogether 368 samples were collected from 14 nunataks and one oasis in East Antarctica. Nematodes were found in 35%, rotifers in 67% and tardigrades in 40% of all samples. Fifty-four microfaunal taxa were identified. Of these, 27 were nematodes, 8 tardigrades and 19 rotifers. The size and geographic location of the nunatak and oasis influenced the abundance and taxonomic composition of the microfauna. The highest abundance and diversity of nematodes were found on large nunataks close to the coast. Nematodes were not found on small inland nunataks. Very high population densities of tardigrades and rotifers were found on two small and isolated nunataks. No microfauna was found on the two southernmost nunataks (Okkenhaugrusta and Vardeklettane), or on the smallest one (Utsikta). The Sørensens Quotient of Similarity was generally low, especially between faunas on nunataks in different mountain ridges. The results indicate rather limited rates of dispersal and colonization between nunataks.  相似文献

Four species of nematodes, sixteen species of rotifers and seven species of tardigrades were found in samples from nunataks in Vestfjella and Heimefrontfjella in Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. The distribution of the fauna was very aggregated and some samples contained no animals. The degree of similarity in species composition between various nunataks was low. The highest abundances and number of species were found on the largest and highest nunataks in the most southern position.  相似文献

Populations of metazoan microfauna (nematodes, rotifers and tardigrades) are patchily distributed on mountain outcrops penetrating the ice sheet (nunataks) in continental Antarctica. The abundance and fauna composition of microscopic animals vary greatly also among samples from similar types of habitats. Occurrence of similar seemingly habitable sites without microfauna and sites with various combinations of animal taxa indicates that stochastic colonization processes as well as local environmental factors and historical factors influence faunal composition in a specific habitable patch. The abundance of nematodes, rotifers and tardigrades in various combinations of co-occurrence was analyzed. One objective was to investigate if biotic interactions structuring these simple communities could be observed. The 368 samples analysed originate from three kinds of habitats, viz. mosses, ornithogenic soils and fellfield soils, obtained from 14 nunataks in Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. It is suggested that high population densities of any of the three animal groups, when they were found alone and lower densities, when they coexisted with other taxa could indicate the presence of competition or predation. However, the great variability in microfauna densities for similar habitable patches made it difficult to find significant differences among population densities in samples with varying complexity.  相似文献

Significant differences occurred in the density of tardigrades, rotifers, and nematodes and the diversity of tardigrades between collecting sites located upwind and downwind from a coal-burning power plant in Missouri. The oak tree species and lichen genera also varied in the two areas. Tardigrade and rotifer densities were greater in upwind sites, whereas nematode density was higher in downwind samples. One tardigrade species (Ramazzottius sp.) was found only at the upwind sites, and one species (Echiniscus sp.) was only in the downwind samples. In contrast, three species (Macrobiotus sp., Minibiotus sp., and Milnesium tardigradum) were found both upwind and downwind but in different densities in the two areas. The study presents baseline data for long-term monitoring of the effects of environmental factors on nematode and rotifer densities as well as tardigrade density and diversity.  相似文献

The polar desert soils of the McMurdo Dry Valley region support a limited water film community dominated by flagellates, amoebae, and nematodes. This study describes the protozoa and compares their distribution to nematodes. In 50 samples collected from 12 locations, rotifers and tardigrades were infrequent, and ciliates and testacea were rare. Soil protozoa occurred at all sites but the dominant nematode, Scottnema lindsayae (Timm 1971), did not, indicating soil habitat factors limiting nematode distribution are not limiting to protozoa. In contrast to the nematode species, which are all endemic to Antarctica, there were no endemic protozoan morphospecies found in our samples. The protozoan abundance was several orders of magnitude greater than that of the nematodes, and the species diversity was much greater. Most of the protozoa grew better at lower incubation temperatures. The ubiquitous distribution of protozoa suggests their importance in soil food webs and nutrient cycling in the dry valleys.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of tardigrades in the city of General Pico (Argentina) are analyzed from samples collected during autumn and spring 2001. Sample sites included paved urban locations with different traffic intensities, non-paved periurban places, and places with peculiar conditions such as the city industrial area and the bus station. Trees of the same species were selected in each area and from each of them nine subsamples of lichens and/or moss, 11 mm in diameter, were taken with steel corers. The diversity, density and relative abundance of tardigrades was recorded and analyzed. Sampling sites were ordinated and classified with PCA and clustering. The number total of species collected in the research was 5. The maximum number of species per site and per tree was 4. The species recorded were: Echiniscus rufoviridis, Milnesium cf. tardigradum, Ramazzottius oberhaeuseri, Macrobiotus areolatus and an undescribed species of the genus Macrobiotus. The average density was approximately 10 specimens per cm2 and the maximum values reach over 50 specimens per cm2. R. oberhaeuseri and M. cf. tardigradum were the most frequent species. R. oberhaeuseri dominates in periurban areas with high suspension dust and very exposed to the sun. M. cf. tardigradum dominates on paved streets with intense vehicle traffic. Results supported the hypothesis of the relationship between air quality and tardigrade diversity.  相似文献

Terrestrial life in Antarctica has been described as some of the simplest on the planet, and mainly confined to soil microfaunal communities. Studies have suggested that the lack of diversity is due to extreme environmental conditions and thought to be driven by abiotic factors. In this study we investigated soil microfauna composition, abundance, and distribution in East Antarctica, and assessed correlations with soil geochemistry and environmental variables. We examined 109 soil samples from a wide range of ice-free habitats, spanning 2000 km from Framnes Mountains to Bailey Peninsula. Microfauna across all samples were patchily distributed, from complete absence of invertebrates to over 1600 specimens/gram of dry weight of soil (gdw), with highest microfauna abundance observed in samples with visible vegetation. Bdelloid rotifers were on average the most widespread found in 87% of sampled sites and the most abundant (44 specimens/gdw). Tardigrades occurred in 57% of the sampled sites with an abundance of 12 specimens/gdw. Nematodes occurred in 71% of samples with a total abundance of 3 specimens/gdw. Ciliates and mites were rarely found in soil samples, with an average abundance of 1.3 and 0.04 specimens/gdw, respectively. We found that microfaunal composition and abundance were mostly correlated with the soil geochemical parameters; phosphorus, NO3 and salinity, and likely to be the result of soil properties and historic landscape formation and alteration, rather than the geographic region they were sampled from. Studies focusing on Antarctic biodiversity must take into account soil geochemical and environmental factors that influence population and species heterogeneity.

The meiofaunal community of artificial water-filled tree holes was determined, and the bottom-up effects of different amounts of leaf litter on abundance and diversity were estimated. We assume a positive impact of leaf litter on meiofaunal abundances, species diversity, and trophic links. Plastic cups with different amounts of leaf litter were placed in a beech forest (Teutoburg Forest, Bielefeld, Germany) for 24 weeks. As early as 1 week later, the artificial tree holes were colonized by bdelloid rotifers, tardigrades, and nematodes. Rotifers were dominant throughout the experiment, followed by nematodes and tardigrades. The 29 nematode species that were identified included bacterial and hyphal feeders, with common species such as Plectus cirratus/accuminatus and Aphelenchoides parietinus predominating. Impacts of water volume (up to complete desiccation), pH, and O2 on the meiofaunal community were not detected, whereas the addition of leaf litter resulted in bottom-up effects. Nematode abundance, especially that of bacterial feeders, and species number increased with increasing leaf input. The predatory nematode Prionchulus muscorum was found only in treatments containing high leaf content. Rotifer abundances were partly negatively affected by the amount of added leaves and, like tardigrades, showed a reversal in their correlation at higher leaf inputs. Our study revealed the fast colonization of small water bodies by meiofaunal organisms and the importance of passively distribution. Furthermore, the results provide a comparison with the meiofaunal community in lakes and soil.  相似文献

Active ciliates, testate amoebae, nematodes, rotifers and tardigrades were examined in fresh and preserved fellfield, moss and ornithogenic soil samples of Wilkes Land. Direct counting was used to investigate abundances, community structures and protozoan diversity. Twenty-six ciliate species (nine first records for continental Antarctica, one undescribed) and five testacean species (three new records) were found. Two Colpoda species were active, further disproving Smith's hypothesis that this genus is absent in continental Antarctica. Animal frequencies varied between habitats but every group occurred in at least 74% of the samples, rotifers (95%) and testaceans (92%) being most frequent. Highest abundances were recorded in moss: 354 ciliates/g dry soil (19 species), 671 testaceans (5 species), 513 nematodes, 1,311 rotifers and 4,607 tardigrades, which thus dominated. Rotifers were most abundant in the other habitats. The microfauna was not randomly distributed because individual numbers were often strongly intercorrelated. Water and organic matter content were relevant environmental parameters; air temperature and pH probably had indirect effects. Received:28 August 1996 / Accepted:23 November 1996  相似文献

A seasonal survey of the distribution of terrestrial tardigrades on Dugger Mountain, Alabama, was conducted during the time period from April 1997 through April 1998. Cryptogams from five trees (Quercus alba), three on north-facing slopes and two on south-facing slopes, were sampled seasonally at three stations (645 m, 410 m, 183 m) along an unnamed tributary of the South Fork of Terrapin Creek. Trees were chosen based on their location outside the riparian zone. Tardigrades were extracted from the samples, mounted individually in Hoyer's medium, and identified to species with phase microscopy. Seasonal and altitudinal variations in the distribution of the populations on the north- and south-facing slopes were determined. Present on Dugger Mountain were tardigrades belonging to 12 species (Macrobiotus cf. areolatus/tonollii, Macrobiotus cf. echinogenitus, Macrobiotus islandicus, Macrobiotus richtersi, Minibiotus intermedius, Milnesium tardigradum, Diphascon pingue, Hypsibius pallidus, Echiniscus cf. arctomys, Echiniscus virginicus, Pseudechiniscus ramazzottii, and Pseudechiniscus suillus). Due to the small numbers of individuals of each species, the total numbers of tardigrades of all species were pooled. There were no significant differences in the mean number of species or the mean number of all tardigrades per sample at each station (altitude). However, seasonal differences in both abundance and number of species were detected in pooled samples due to the high numbers collected in spring 1997.  相似文献

Terrestrial tardigrades are often found in the lichens and mosses growing on trees and rocks. The assertion that tardigrades in these habitats are very patchy in their distribution has rarely been backed by quantitative sampling. This study assesses spatial variability in tardigrade populations inhabiting small patches (0.1 cm2 to over 5 cm2) of moss and lichen on trees and rocks at three sites in the United States of America. Tardigrades were collected from four replicate rocks in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas, with 30 lichen patches collected on two adjacent boulders and 20 moss patches on a second pair of boulders. In Fort Myers and in Citrus Springs, Florida, 30 lichen patches per tree were collected from two pairs of trees. The tardigrades in each sample were extracted, mounted, identified, and counted. The variation in tardigrade abundance among lichen or moss patches within rocks or trees was very high; the only consistent pattern was that very small patches usually lacked tardigrades. Tardigrade diversity and abundance also varied greatly within sites when lichens and mosses of the same species from different rocks and trees were compared (in the most extreme case one tree had numerous individuals of two tardigrade species present while the other had almost no tardigrades). The results of this quantitative sampling support the assertion that tardigrades are very patchy in distribution. Given the considerable time investment required for the quantitative processing of tardigrade samples, this high spatial variability in tardigrade diversity and abundance requires that researches testing ecological hypotheses about tardigrade abundance check variability before deciding how many samples to take.  相似文献

The invertebrate faunal composition of moss-dominated flushes near the Canada Glacier was, as in similar habitats in continental Antarctic regions, numerically dominated by protozoa, rotifers, nematodes and tardigrades. Mites were of lesser abundance. Although collembola occur in the Taylor Valley, none were found at the study site. The finding of a catenulid flatworm is significant as microturbellarians have only rarely been recorded from Antarctica. Nematode, tardigrade and rotifer densities recorded were comparable to those in other Antarctic regions. These groups were found at a mean depth ranging from 5 to 10.83 mm in the moss. A greater percentage of all groups were in the upper 5 mm of moss cores in post-melt samples than in pre-melt samples.  相似文献

An initial density (Pi) of 1,540 Pratylenchus neglectus/kg soil suppressed shoot growth of potato, Solanum tuberosum cv. Russet Burbank, in a greenhouse test at 3 weeks. After 6 weeks, shoot weights were reduced by Pi of 662 and 1,540 nematodes/kg soil, the final soil densities of P. neglectus were twice the respective Pi, and the numbers of nematodes per gram dry root were 5,363 and 7,981. In 1986-88 field microplot experiments with the Norchip cultivar, neither shoot nor root weight was suppressed by P. neglectus. In 1986 a Pi of 115 nematodes/kg soil suppressed the total number and weight of tubers per plant. In 1987 a Pi of 186 nematodes/kg soil suppressed the marketable and total number of tubers by 19 and 25 %, respectively. In 1988 a Pi of 1,884 nematodes/ kg soil reduced total and marketable weight by 18 and 19%, respectively. In 1986 and 1987 nematode population densities in the soil increased 34-fold and 27-fold, respectively. In 1988 the Pi of 1,884 nematodes/kg soil rose to 21,890/kg at midseason, then dropped to 4,370/kg at harvest. These studies show for the first time that P. neglectus reproduces well on potato and can cause yield losses. Because of its distribution and abundance, P. neglectus may be considered an economically important parasite of potato in Ontario.  相似文献

In order to understand the distribution of dinoflagellate cysts, surface sediments were collected from 15 stations in Changjiang River Estuary from 122°E to 123.5°E and from 29°N to 32°N in four cruises from May 2002 to February 2003. In the present study, 38 different cyst morphotypes representing 21 genera and 6 groups were identified, while 1 type was not identified into genus level. Species number and cell density of dinoflagellate cysts ranged from 10 to 25 species and from 12 to 587 per gram of dry weight, respectively. There were no obvious differences in cyst composition and density among seasons. However, the highest cyst species number and density were recorded in summer and winter, respectively. Cysts of heterotrophic dinoflagellates, which held 55.7% of the overall cyst density averagely, dominated cyst assemblages. Cyst density and species number increased from the west to the east, from the north to the south within the study area. Cysts of toxic dinoflagellates Alexandrium cat‐enella and Alexandrium tamarense complex distributed widely and were observed in almost all stations, with the maximum cell density of 81 per gram of dry weight.  相似文献

A seasonal survey of tardigrade populations in the riparian zone of the Choccolocco Creek, Alabama, was undertaken from August 1994 through December 1995. Six sites within the riparian zone were sampled in different portions of the creek. At each site, 3 trees with cryptogams were sampled six times during survey period. From a total of 108 samples, 1,588 tardigrades were extracted and individually mounted on slides in Hoyer's medium. The community was dominated (86%) by specimens in the genus Macrobiotus. One species of Echiniscus was new to science and will be described in a separate paper. No significant difference was found between tardigrade occurrence (total number of individuals) and season, moss genera, or tree species. However, there was a significant relationship between the number of tardigrades and site, indicating the need for additional replicate samples. Simpson's and Shannon-Wiener's species diversity indices indicated that species richness and evenness were low. Jaccard's and Standard's community similarity indices suggested that the communities within the riparian zone were dissimilar along Choccolocco Creek.  相似文献

The raolluscan fauna of a special habitat, the high intertidal algal turf, was studied at four stations on the island of Sao Miguel, Azores. The number of species found ranged from 13 to 23. However, a small group of only six species (the bivalve Lasaea adansoni and the gastropods Pisinna punctulum, Omalogyra atomus, Fossarus ambiguus, Skeneopsis planorbis and Alvania postrema) accounted for more than 80% of all the specimens collected. Mollusc density reached values of 20000 specimens per 100 g algal dry weight. The abundance and number of species of molluscs was comparable with those reported for algal zones lower on the Azorean shores.
Wave exposure and seasonality effects were found to be small, presumably because of the relatively mild abiotic conditions and the protective role of the turf. The algal substrata influenced the phytal molluscan community in two ways. First, the abundance of molluscs was significantly correlated with algal dry weight. Secondly, molluscan abundance and diversity were influenced by the algal composition of the turf. A rich algal composition, with several species of branched fleshy and coralline algae, was associated with a rich molluscan fauna. The dominance of coralline algae resulted in a abundant but species-poor fauna, while an almost monospecific turf of Gigartina was poor in both species and number of molluscan fauna.  相似文献

Six species of tardigrades, Pseudechiniscus suillus, Macrobiotus sp., Hypsibius antarcticus, Ramajendas frigidus, Diphascon chilenense and Diphascon pingue were extracted from mosses and lichens from the ice-free regions of the Windmill Islands near Casey Base, East Antarctica. Significant positive associations were found between the three common species ( Pseudechiniscus suillus, Hypsibius antarcticus, Diphascon chilenense ) and bryophytes, whereas strong negative associations were found between these species and algae and lichens. There were additional interspecific associations between the common species of tardigrades as well as between tardigrades, nematodes and rotifers.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of subtidal meiofauna in Mandovi estuary of Goa were studied from June 1983 to June 1984. Monthly faunal abundance ranged from 491 to 2791/10 cm2 and dry weight biomass from 0.16 to 2.80 mg 10 cm2. Free living nematodes were the dominant group contributing over 75% of the total density and 30 to 42% of the total biomass. Among nematodes the deposit feeders were more abundant in fine muddy substratum while epigrowth feeders dominated in sandy substratum.Harpacticoids were next, comprising 6.9 to 8.7% of the total meiofauna number, followed by turbellaria (3.8–4.5%), polychaeta (2.8–3.2%) and ostracods (1.6–4.5%) The contribution of other groups to faunal density was 4.5–6.2%. In the biomass the ostracods contributed most (29.8–54.7%), followed by nematodes (23.8–34.6%). Over 60% of the fauna occurred in the top 2 cm of the sediment and the faunal density reduced significantly with increasing depth in the sediment. The vertical distribution of meiofauna was positively correlated to the vertical distribution of Eh, chlorophyll a and interstitial water. Seasonality was greatly influenced by the south-west monsoon and the fauna quickly repopulated after the monsoon. Salinity, temperature and food influenced the faunal abundance.  相似文献
