The effect of intravenous cloprostenol treatment at the time of insemination on reproductive performance was consecutively evaluated in three different subpopulations of high producing lactating dairy cows: Study (1) early postpartum synchronized and fixed-time inseminated (about 50 days in milk) cows (n = 379: 187 control and 192 treated cows); Study (2) presumed high fertility cows first inseminated between 90 and 120 days postpartum (n = 248: 124 control and 124 treated cows); and Study (3) heat stressed repeat breeder cows (n = 183: 93 control and 90 treated cows). Data were analyzed using multiple regression methods. Study 1: Parity (primiparous versus multiparous), milk production, body condition score at AI, insemination season (cool versus warm period) and treatment were included in the analysis as potential factors affecting ovulation, double ovulation, return to estrus, and pregnancy to first AI and to second AI (first AI plus return AI) rates. Logistic regression analysis indicated that the final model for ovulation rate only included the interaction (P = 0.002) between insemination season and treatment. Cloprostenol treatment at insemination led to a 4.2-fold increase in the ovulation rate in cows inseminated during the warm period. There were no significant effects of treatment, parity, milk production, body score or the insemination season on the return to estrus rate. The only variables included in the final logistic model for double ovulation and pregnancy to first AI rates were treatment and season, respectively. Treatment led to a 2.6-fold increase (P = 0.001) in the double ovulation rate, whereas cows inseminated in the warm period were 2.1 times less likely (P = 0.007) to become pregnant at first AI compared to those inseminated in the cool season. The variables included in the final logistic model for the pregnancy rate to second AI were treatment and season. Cloprostenol given at AI increased the risk of pregnancy 1.9 times (P = 0.002), and cows inseminated during the warm season were two times less likely to become pregnant (P = 0.003). No significant interactions were found among these three dependent variables (double ovulation and pregnancy to first and to second AI rates). Study 2: Logistic regression analysis of all the dependent variables: return to estrus, and pregnancy to first and to second AI (first AI plus return to AI) rates indicated no significant effects of treatment, parity, days in milk, milk production or body score at AI. No significant interactions were found. Study 3: The final model for the pregnancy rate only included the interaction between parity (primiparous versus multiparous) and treatment. Days in milk, milk production and insemination number showed no significant effect on pregnancy rate. Cloprostenol treatment at insemination increased the pregnancy rate in primiparous repeat breeder cows (odds ratio: 3.6). The treatment group and parity showed significant (P < 0.0001) interaction. This interaction suggests that cloprostenol treatment of primiparous cows at insemination might enhance pregnancy yet have no effect in multiparous cows. Our findings indicate that cloprostenol administered at insemination promotes ovulation and double ovulation in lactating dairy cows. Cloprostenol treatment showed no benefit in cows with acceptable reproductive performance, suggesting that cloprostenol treatment at AI may only be useful in cows in which stress factors affect ovulation and in repeat breeder cows.  相似文献

The efficacy of pedometers as estrus detection aids was tested in a group of 47 Holstein cows during the postpartum period. Pedometers were strapped on the left front leg of each cow on the day of parturition and pedometer measurements were recorded twice daily for 60 days. The cows were also observed twice a day for behavioral signs of estrus. Daily blood samples were collected during Days 1-30, and thereafter once every two days from Days 30-60 after parturition for progesterone assay. Rectal palpations of the ovaries were carried out once every four days during the first month after parturition. Based on the progesterone profiles and rectal palpation findings, 91 ovulations were recorded in 42 cows and 5 cows remained acyclic during the observation period. Seventy-six percent (69 91 ) of the ovulations were associated with pedometer indications of estrus, while only 35% (32 91 ) of the ovulations were associated with observed estrus. Fifty-seven percent (24 42 ) of the first postpartum ovulations were associated with pedometer measurements, but only 19% (8 42 ) of the first postpartum ovulations were associated with behavioral signs of estrus. Similarly, pedometers were superior to observations as a method of detection of estrus associated with the second and third postpartum ovulations (91% vs 37%, 92% vs 78% respectively). It is concluded that pedometers are useful aids for estrus detection, particularly in the immediate postpartum.  相似文献

The effects of work and diet supplementation on progesterone secretion and on incidence of short luteal phases and ovulations without estrus was investigated in 40 postpartum F(1) crossbred dairy cows. These cows were allocated to 1 of 4 treatment groups: Group SPNW, supplement-nonworking; Group SPW, supplement-working; Group NSNW, nonsupplement-nonworking; and Group NSW, nonsupplement-working. After calving, working cows pulled sledges with a load of 300 to 450 Newtons(N); 4 hours per day 4 days per week, for a total of 100 days over a 1-year period. All cows were fed natural grass hay ad libitum while the supplemented cows were fed 3 kg of concentrate per head per day. The proportion of cows which showed behavioral estrus by 1 year post partum was 100, 100, 60 and 20% for Group SPNW, SPW, NSNW and NSW cows, respectively. Based on plasma progesterone concentrations, ovulation started 62 days earlier than onset of behavioral estrus. A total of 73 ovulations occurred by 1 year post partum. Forty-nine (67.1%) and 26 (32.9%) ovulations occurred in the supplemented and nonsupplemented cows while 33 (45.2%) and 40 (54.8%) ovulations occurred in the working and nonworking cows, respectively. Of the total ovulations, 26 (35.6%) were not associated with behavioral signs of estrus and occurred in 13 (32.5%) cows. The incidence of ovulation without estrus was higher (P<0.05) in working (42.4%) than in nonworking (30%) cows and in nonsupplemented (41.7%) than in supplemented (32.7%) cows. Short luteal phases occurred in 32.5% of the cows before the establishment of normal estrous cycles. In working cows, diet supplementation off-set the negative effect of work on the onset of estrus and conception. However, a relatively higher number of cows in Group SPW had ovulations without estrus before a normal estrous cycle was established. The incidence of short luteal phases or ovulations without estrus did not influence the pregnancy rate in subsequent normal estrus periods. In conclusion, in the supplemented cows, work did not influence the proportion of cows showing estrus and conceiving, but it significantly delayed the postpartum anestrus interval. In the nonsupplemented cows, reproductive activity was impaired in both working and nonworking cows, but was pronounced in working cows. However, once pregnancy was established there was no effect of work on the maintenance of pregnancy. Our study shows that with appropriate feeding regimens lactating crossbred cows could be used for draught purposes without any detrimental effects on fertility, but calving intervals would be extended. Finally, the physiological mechanisms involved in anestrus and ovulations without estrus and the significance of such phenomena in affecting postpartum reproductive performance and fertility in working cows require further investigation.  相似文献

Poor detection of estrus, still a major problem in the dairy industry, has prompted the development of electronic estrous detection technologies. One of the features of estrous behavior is a marked increase in walking activity. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the effects of various management factors on walking activity increase at estrus, and the relationship between this trait and fertility. Data from 5883 artificial inseminations (AI) conducted in two high-producing dairy herds were analyzed. Detection of estrus was performed using a pedometer system. Of the total AI investigated, 2072 (35.2%) resulted in pregnancy. The following data were recorded for each animal at AI: herd, lactation number, milk production (average for the 3 days prior to AI), lactation stage (early, mid, and late lactation), previous estrous synchronization (cloprostenol or progesterone releasing intravaginal device [PRID] for animals showing estrus within 7 days of treatment), season (warm versus cool period), insemination number following parturition, inseminating bull, inseminator, and pedometer measurements. Variables were screened for associations with walking activity by analysis of variance (ANOVA) through generalized linear model procedures (PROC GLM). Increased parity and milk production, and insemination during the warm period were associated with lower pedometer measurements. No significant effects of the herd, estrous synchronization, and lactation stage were observed. The link between walking activity and fertility was determined by applying logistic regression models. We detected no significant effects of herd, milk production, estrous synchronization, lactation stage, and inseminator on pregnancy rate. A higher lactation and insemination number, and insemination during the warm period were negatively correlated with the pregnancy rate. The likelihood of pregnancy was greater when semen from one of the bulls was used and when physical activity at estrus was increased. Our findings indicate that cow and management factors contribute intensely to walking activity at estrus, and also reveal a close link between increased walking activity and fertility.  相似文献

During the periovulatory period in dairy cattle, the largest ovarian follicle can be felt by palpation per rectum as a firm/soft follicle (young preovulatory follicle), a very soft follicle separating it from the remainder of the ovary (mature preovulatory follicle), or an evacuated follicle (follicle associated with ovulation). Because any one of these three follicle types may be present at the time of artificial insemination, the objective of this study was to identify possible differences between the effects of a firm/soft, very soft, or evacuated ovarian follicle on fertility. Out of a study sample of 2365 inseminations, very soft, firm/soft, and evacuated follicles were recorded in 1689 (71%), 593 (25%), and 83 (3.5%) inseminations, respectively. Logistic regression analysis indicated no significant effects of largest follicle type, vaginal discharge, season, days in milk, parity, synchronized or natural estrus, and semen-providing bull on the pregnancy rate. The only variable included in the final logistic regression model was the interaction season-follicle type. This interaction determined that the likelihood of pregnancy decreased significantly by factors of 0.86 or 0.82 in cows with a firm/soft follicle inseminated during the cool or warm period, respectively, and by a factor of 0.09 in cows with evacuated follicles inseminated during the warm period, using as reference cows with a very soft follicle inseminated during the cool period (yielding the highest pregnancy rate). As an overall conclusion, the state of the periovulatory follicle at insemination was clearly related to fertility and masked the effects of factors commonly affecting fertility such as parity, days in milk at AI and inseminating bull. More importantly they suggest that by including ovarian follicle checks in artificial insemination routines, the success of this procedure could be improved.  相似文献

Ovarian activity and estrous behaviour were monitored through milk progesterone determinations and twice daily visual observations in 70 crossbred Brown Swiss x Nellore cows following natural service. Whole milk samples were collected on the day of estrus (Day 1), Day 11, and every 5 d thereafter until the next estrus or pregnancy confirmation. Seventy percent of the cows behaved as expected, i.e. they showed a 19-to 25-d interval between estrus and the next ovulation, or they became pregnant. Estrous cycles of regular length (18 to 24 d) were found in 54% of the cases. Prolonged luteal phases (interval from estrus to next ovulation > 28 d) were found in 15.7% of cows. Short estrous cycles (interestrous interval < 18 d) were found in 7.1% of the cases. Periods of acyclicity (basal progesterone levels for periods >/= 15 d) were found in 5.8% of the cases, and one cow exhibited estrus while pregnant and had a high progesterone concentration. Cows with a prolonged luteal phase and those with a short estrous cycle had an interval between ovulations of 35.0 +/- 6.7 d (x +/- SD) and 9.6 +/- 3.1 d, respectively. Signs of estrus were not detected in 33.3% of the ovulations confirmed by progesterone determinations. Low conception rates, failures in estrus detection and a high frequency of abnormal postbreeding luteal phases were found.  相似文献

The postpartum period is critical for efficient reproduction, and certain features of the normal estrus cycle during this period have been associated with subsequent reproductive performance. The objectives of the present investigation were to evaluate the effects of environmental, production, and reproductive factors on walking activity at estrus as determined using pedometers during the first 50 days in milk (DIM) (study 1). In a second study, we tried to establish whether pedometer measurements recorded during this period could be used to predict subsequent fertility by considering the number of cows becoming pregnant before 90 DIM. We analyzed data derived from 995 parturitions in a single herd. Detection of estrus was performed using a pedometer system. Variables were screened for associations with walking activity by analysis of variance (ANOVA) through generalized linear model procedures (PROC GLM). Increased milk production and parity, and a mean relative humidity (RH) higher than 95% were associated with lower pedometer measurements. A higher number of animals simultaneously in estrus rendered higher pedometer readings. No significant effects of the year, season, DIM, number of previous estruses, and climatic data other than high mean RH were observed. Relationships between pedometer measurements and other variables recorded during the first 50 days postpartum, and subsequent fertility were assessed by applying logistic regression models. We detected no significant effects of year, milk production, season, and mean activity increase at estrus on high fertility. The likelihood of pregnancy before 90 DIM decreased for each additional lactation and for cows in anestrus between days 0 and 50 postpartum. However, pedometer readings during the first 50 days postpartum were unable to accurately predict subsequent fertility.  相似文献

The objectives of the current study were to determine the incidence of silent ovulation (based on walking activity and milk progesterone profiles), identify risk factors for silent ovulation, and investigate its impact on reproductive performance in high-yielding dairy cows in free-stall housing. Overall, 277 lactations in 161 Holstein Friesian cows from a commercial dairy herd in northern Japan were studied. Walking activity (measured with pedometers) >80% above the mean for the preceding 2 d was defined as estrus, whereas day of ovulation was estimated using milk progesterone concentrations. Ovulation not preceded by increased walking activity was considered silent ovulation; the incidence was 55.2%, 23.8%, 21.3%, and 10.5% at the first, second, third, and fourth ovulations postpartum, respectively. Moderate and high milk yield significantly increased the risk of silent ovulation at second (odds ratio [OR] = 2.7 and 1.2; P = 0.04) and third and/or fourth ovulations (OR = 6.7 and 12.9; P = 0.03). Based on survival analysis, silent ovulations at the first, second, third, and/or fourth ovulations were associated with 28% (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.72), 55% (HR = 0.45), and 47% (HR = 0.53) reductions in pregnancy rate, respectively, and 41% (HR = 0.59), 66% (HR = 0.34), and 65% (HR = 0.35) reductions in artificial insemination (AI) submission rate. Cows with at least one silent ovulation (with the exception of the first ovulation) had a longer interval from calving to first AI (72 vs. 54 d, P < 0.001) and to achievement of pregnancy (133 vs. 80 d, P < 0.001). In conclusion, approximately one third of the ovulations (based on milk progesterone concentrations) in Holstein cows within 90 d postpartum were silent. Silent ovulations at the second to fourth ovulations were associated with high milk yields and at all ovulations were associated with impaired reproductive performance.  相似文献

The establishment of ovarian activity during lactation was studied in the postpartum period of Rambouillet, Dorset and Finnish Landrace ewes following lambing during the month of October (1981). The mean postpartum intervals to first ovulation and first estrus were 22.7 and 53.0 for Rambouillets, 25.2 and 51.0 for Dorsets, and 22.5 and 49.7 days for Finnish Landrace ewes. Estrus was not associated with the first ovulation postpartum in any breed. The number of silent ovulations prior to the first estrus was highest in the Rambouillet and lowest in Finnish Landrace breeds. Of the 18 ewes in the project, 14 had normal luteal phase lengths, 1 had a possible short luteal phase and 3 had prolonged luteal phases following the first ovulation postpartum. The first service conception rate of all ewes bred was 82% (14 17 ) at an average of 52 days postpartum. The lambing rate following the autumn breeding was higher (2.14 +/- 0.14) than the lambing rate which followed the previous spring breeding (1.28 +/- 0.11).  相似文献

This study addresses potential management risk factors affecting the incidence of twin pregnancies in high-producing dairy cows. Special attention was paid to the estrus synchronization protocol used before the AI resulting in pregnancy. Possible factors affecting the twin pregnancy rate were analyzed through binary logistic regression procedures on 2015 pregnant cows from July 2010 to July 2011. Twin pregnancy was recorded in 361 of the 2015 pregnancy diagnoses made (17.9%). Twin pregnancy rates differed among herds (P < 0.001) and ranged from 12.4% to 23.9%. Based on the odds ratios, the risk of twin pregnancy was reduced by factors of 0.65 or 0.71 when AI was performed during the warm season or an increasing photoperiod, respectively and increased by a factor of 1.11 for each unit increase in lactation number; by factors of 4.57 or 6.33 in cows that received a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID) plus 500 or 750 IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) 28 days before the pregnancy AI, respectively; by a factor of 2.39 in cows with an ovarian cyst diagnosed in the 14 days prior to AI and treated with prostaglandins (PG); by factors of 1.94 or 3.91 in cows that received two PG doses during the 14 days prior to AI or cows that following failed PRID treatment had received PG started over the 28 days prior to AI, respectively; and by a factor of 2.58 in cows that had previously delivered twins compared to cows delivering singletons. Our results indicate that cow factors, such as lactation number and previous twining, as well as environmental factors, such as photoperiod and season and management related to synchronization protocols affect significantly the incidence of twin pregnancies.  相似文献

Considerable technological advances have been made in the automated detection of estrus in dairy cattle, but few studies have evaluated their relative performance on the same animals or assessed cow-related factors that affect their performance. Our objective was to assess the performance and reliability of three devices commercially available in France for cow estrus detection. The devices were a pedometer (PM; Afitag) and two activity meters (AM1; Heatime-RuminAct, and AM2; HeatPhone). Two algorithms were tested for AM2. We fitted 63 lactating Holstein cows with the three detectors from calving to 90 days after calving. The onset and pattern of cyclicity were monitored from 7 to 90 days postpartum measuring progesterone concentration in milk twice weekly. A total of 211 ovulations were identified. Cyclicity was classified as normal in 60% of cows (38/63). Calculated over the operating period of all the devices (179 periods of estrus), the sensitivities and positive predictive values were, respectively, 71% and 71% for PM, 62% and 84% for AM1, 61% and 67% for the first algorithm of AM2, and 62% and 87% for the second algorithm of AM2. Both activity meters had a lower sensitivity but a higher positive predictive value than the PM (P < 0.05). For all devices, the performance in estrus detection was much poorer at the first postpartum ovulation than at subsequent ovulations (P < 0.05). Lactation rank and milk production affected some devices (P < 0.05). These devices could be used to reinforce visual observations, especially after 50 days postpartum, the minimum recommended delay to insemination. However, their full benefit remains to be verified in different farming systems and taking into account the specific objectives of the dairy farmer.  相似文献

Simultaneous injections of prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF) and gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) or saline were given to 32 diestrous dairy cows to test the ability of GnRH to improve estrous and ovulation synchrony beyond that of PGF alone. Cows were randomly assigned to receive PGF on Day 8 or Day 10 of the estrous cycle (estrus = Day 0), and all cows were further assigned to simultaneous injection of GnRH or saline. Corpus luteum (CL) regression, return to estrus and follicular activity were monitored by plasma progesterone assay, twice-daily estrous detection and ultrasonographic examination, respectively. Plasma progesterone concentrations declined to <1.0 ng/ml at 24 hours after PGF in all cows and were not affected by GnRH. Gonadotropin releasing hormone inducted premature ovulation or delayed return to estrus in 7 of 8 cows treated with PGF/GnRH on Day 8 and 3 of 8 cows treated with PGF/GnRH on Day 10. Further, cows with premature GnRH-induced ovulations failed to develop and maintain a fully functional CL, and all returned to estrus 7 to 13 days after the induced ovulation. These data indicate that GnRH administered simultaneously with a luteolytic dose of PGF disrupts follicular dynamics and induces premature ovulation or delays normal return to estrus and, therefore, does not improve the synchrony of estrus and ovulation achieved with PGF alone.  相似文献

Records from 183 nonlactating mares that experienced spontaneous multiple ovulation were examined to determine if: 1) double ovulations are as likely to be unilateral as bilateral; 2) the interval between two ovulations is shorter when the ovulations are unilateral than when they are bilateral; 3) the mean diameter of the two follicles on the day prior to ovulation is less when the ovulations are synchronous and unilateral; 4) for both unilateral and bilateral ovulation, twin embryos are more likely to be detected when double ovulations are asynchronous; and 5) for both synchronous and asynchronous ovulations, twin embryos are more likely to be detected when the ovulations are bilateral. Mares were teased daily with a stallion and follicular development was assessed daily during estrus by ultrasonography. Mares were inseminated daily during estrus and embryo recovery attempts were performed 6 to 7 d post ovulation. Double ovulations occurred as frequently from the same, as from opposite ovaries. The interval between the double ovulations was not shorter (P > 0.05) in unilateral versus bilateral ovulations. In addition, size of the largest and second largest preovulatory follicles was not altered (P > 0.05) by type of ovulation (bilateral vs unilateral) or synchrony of ovulation. Synchrony of ovulations had no affect (P > 0.05) on the incidence of twin embryos recovered. However, more (P < 0.05) twin embryos were recovered from bilateral ovulators compared to unilateral ovulators.  相似文献

The past few decades have seen a dramatic increase in infertility and reproductive disorders associated with a rising milk yield. Herein, we present a 10-year (from 1991 to 2000) retrospective survey of these factors using data from a reproductive management program performed on high-yielding dairy herds in north-east Spain. The data series included 12,711 lactations. The year was divided into warm and cool periods. Data were obtained from cows first inseminated or examined 45-70 days postpartum. The reproductive tract of each animal was examined by palpation per rectum within 43-48 days postpartum. Cows were then weekly examined until insemination or until postpartum Day 70. Cows with a corpus luteum were synchronized for estrus and timed AI. Cows showing natural estrus in the same period were also inseminated. All inseminations were pooled as a single group and inseminated cows were considered cyclic. Inactive ovaries and ovarian cysts were recorded as ovarian disorders. Incomplete uterine involution, endometritis and pyometra were grouped as uterine disorders.Overall cyclicity and pregnancy rates of all AI cows, and cyclicity and pregnancy rates corresponding to the warm period significantly decreased over the 10-year period, yet remained practically constant during the cool period. The incidence of inactive ovaries in the entire population and that corresponding only to cows examined during the warm period significantly increased with time but was similar during the cool period. Ovarian cysts were more frequent during the warm (12.3%) than during the cool (2.4%) period, though these proportions were maintained throughout the study. The incidence of uterine disorders significantly decreased with time and did not differ between cool and warm periods. Milk yield per cow and year increased from 7800 kg in 1991 to 10,200 kg in 2000. Regression analysis revealed that, for all cows and those inseminated or examined in the warm period respectively, each 1000 kg increase in average milk yield was related to decreases of 3.2 and 6% in pregnancy rate, 4.4 and 7.6% in cyclicity, and to increase of 4.6 and 8% in the incidence of inactive ovaries. The rate of uterine disorders decreased 1.1% regardless of season. Our overall results clearly reflect the increased infertility and incidence of reproductive disorders over the study period. This occurred simultaneous to increasing average milk yield. Nevertheless, under our study conditions, a cool environment appears to preserve fertility and reduce the risk of reproductive disorders irrespective of the milk yield. These findings prompt the need to improve management practices by attempting to reduce the effects of factors provoking stress.  相似文献

This study was designed to examine estrous response rates to the therapeutic treatment of clinical anestrus in high producing dairy cows and to identify the factors that could affect these rates. Cows with silent ovulation (Subestrus group), cystic ovarian disease (Cyst group) or ovarian hypofunction (OH group) were given specific treatment for their disorder. Data were derived from 1764 treatments in cows producing a mean of 45.4 kg of milk upon treatment including: 889 subestrous cows, 367 cystic cows and 508 cows with ovarian hypofunction. Cows showing estrus following treatment exhibited a similar pregnancy rate to cows attaining natural estrus used as reference: 33% (337/1006) and 35% (626/1796), respectively. No significant differences in pregnancy rates were observed among the Subestrus, Cyst and OH groups (34% (196/571), 34% (44/130), 32% (97/305), respectively. Based on the odds ratio, an estrous response for all groups was less likely to occur in cows that had suffered previous anestrus, compared to cows that were anestrous for the first time, whereas the likelihood of an estrous response increased in cows treated after 90 days in milk. Our results indicate that previous anestrus and a late stage of lactation can have a negative and positive effect, respectively, on the estrous response to the specific treatment of clinical anestrus shown by high producing dairy cows. Treatment targeted at each type of clinical anestrus can render similar pregnancy rates to those shown by cows in natural estrus.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between various behavioral signs of estrous and time of ovulation and, determine which behavioral estrous sign(s) best predicted time of ovulation. In total, 94 ovulations were observed in 67 Holstein-Friesian dairy cows. Different behavioral estrous signs were observed at 3-h intervals and their relation with time of ovulation (ultrasound examinations at 3-h intervals) was investigated. In all estrous periods, sniffing and chin resting was displayed, while mounting was displayed in 90% and standing heat in 58% of estrous periods. Estrus was more intense in primiparous cows compared to multiparous cows and when more animals were in estrus at the same time. Although, these factors influenced intensity of estrous behavioral signs, they did not influence time of ovulation. Ovulation occurred 30.0 +/- 5.1 h after onset of estrus (ranging between 18.5 and 48.5 h) and 18.8 +/- 4.4 h after end of estrus (ranging between 9.5 and 33.5 h). Although informative, these predictors are highly variable between individuals and the method used to determine the onset and end of estrus is time consuming this, therefore limits in their use as a practical predictor of ovulation. Sniffing and chin resting were displayed during the non-estrous period and are therefore, not useful predictors of ovulation time. For animals that displayed standing heat, onset of standing heat was a good predictor for ovulation time (occurring 26.4 +/- 5.2 h before ovulation). However, standing heat was only displayed in a limited number of cows, especially when only one cow was in estrus at a time. Onset of mounting was the best predictor for time of ovulation (occurring 28.7 +/- 5.3 h before ovulation), and it was displayed in 90% of the estrous periods. However, mounting cannot yet be assessed automatically, which limits its practical use as ovulation predictor.  相似文献

We examined short- and long-term effects of high milking frequency (HMF) for the first 21 days of lactation. The study included 122 Israeli Holstein cows – 32 pregnant heifers, 40 cows in second lactation and 50 cows in >second lactation. Heifers were paired according to predicted transmitting ability and cows according to energy-corrected milk (ECM) production, age, days in milk and expected calving date. Thin cows (body condition score <2.75) were not included. One cow from each pair was arbitrarily allocated to a control group milked three times daily (3× milking cows) and the counterpart to an experimental group milked six times daily for the first 21 days of lactation and then three times daily for the rest of the lactation (6× milking cows). During the first 21 days of lactation, 6× milking cows produced 9.3 kg more milk (26.5%) and 7.16 kg more ECM (19%) than the 3× milking cows. The higher milk production persisted throughout the entire lactation (305 days), as reflected by treatment×age interaction showing higher milk production for the first and second (7%) but not >second lactation cows relative to their control counterparts (−0.37%); ECM production was also higher in 6× milking first and second lactation (7.6% and 5%, respectively) but not for >second lactation cows. Furthermore, HMF had long-lasting effects, expressed as significantly higher milk production through the succeeding lactation in the previous first lactation cows (10%); a tendency toward significance in the second lactation cows relative to the controls (4.7%), but a deleterious effect on the >second lactation cows, reflected by lower milk production (−5.25%) than in controls; similar patterns were found for the ECM. For the entire 305 days of lactation, fat and protein yields were higher for first and second lactation cows, whereas protein yield for >second lactation cows was lower in the 6× milking v. control group. Given that HMF during the first 21 days of first or second lactation increases milk and ECM yields throughout the concurrent and successive lactation with no adverse effect on energy balance, mastitis, metabolic diseases or reproduction, it seems to be economically beneficial. However, caution should be paid for >second lactation cows due to absence of significant effect in the entire of the first HMF applied lactation and the deleterious effect in the succeeding lactation.  相似文献

In post-partum anestrous beef cows suckling calves, neither the choice of hormonal regime to ensure the presence of a healthy dominant follicle at the end of a progestagen treatment nor the optimum hormone to induce estrus and ovulation is clear. Twenty-eight beef cows, in good body condition, 25-30 days post-partum, were assigned to one of four treatments: (i) 3mg norgestomet (N) implant with 5mg estradiol valerate (EDV) and 3mg N injection at the time of insertion (Crestar) for 5 days followed by 600 IU eCG at the time of implant removal; (ii) Crestar for 5 days as in (i) followed by 0.75 mg estradiol benzoate (EDB) 24h later; (iii) Crestar for 9 days followed by 600 IU eCG at the time of implant removal; and (iv) Crestar for 9 days followed by 0.75 mg EDB 24h later. Ovarian scanning was preformed from 4 days before implant insertion until ovulation and 4 days postovulation to detect the CL. Daily blood samples were collected from day 20 post-partum until second ovulation for FSH and E(2) assay. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance. There was no effect of the stage of follicle wave at the time of implant insertion on interval to new follicle wave emergence (range 1-7 days; mean 4.7 days). FSH concentrations were decreased to 5.9+/-2.0 and 7.7+/-1.1 ng/ml for pre- and post-selection cows 1 day after start of treatment; thereafter, they increased on Day 2 to 7.9+/-2.0 and 11.0+/-1.1 ng/ml and on Day 3 to 10.3+/-2.7 and 11.4+/-1.7 ng/ml for pre- and post-selection cows, respectively, despite high-estradiol concentrations at that time. There was no effect of treatment on the interval from implant removal to ovulation (3.2-4.0 days) or on the number of cows detected in estrus (26 of 27 cows). The size of the ovulatory follicle in cows given 0.75 mg EDB 24h post implant removal was decreased in animals at the pre-selection stage (12.2+/-0.1mm) of the follicle wave compared with those at the post-selection stage (15.3+/-0.9 mm) at implant removal. Cows given 600 IU eCG at the pre-selection phase of follicular growth had multiple ovulations (4.0+/-1.1). Cows given EDV at the start of a 5-day implant period had higher estradiol concentrations before and on the day of implant removal than those given EDV at the start of a 9-day implant period. The injection of 0.75 mg EDB 1 day after implant removal tended to increase concentrations of estradiol one day later. In conclusion, 5mg EDV and 3mg N at insertion of a 3mg N implant resulted in variable new follicle wave emergence 1-7 days later in post-partum beef cows nursing calves (22 of 27); both eCG and EDB were equally effective at inducing estrus after implant removal in cows in good BCS, but eCG resulted in a significant increase in ovulation rate in cows treated before dominant follicle selection.  相似文献

Quarter samples of foremilk and residual milk were taken approximately every second week from 2 days post partum (pp) throughout lactation month 9, from 5 dairy cows in their second lactation period. Bacteriologically positive milk samples were excluded. The aim was to study the variation in total and differential leukocyte counts, N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase), antitrypsin (ATR) and serum albumin (BSA) in milk during the lactation period and different stages of oestrous cycle. Also the between milkings variation was studied from lactation month 4 to 9. At 2 days pp, each fraction of milk contained significantly higher numbers of leukocytes and had a higher activity of NAGase and ATR than later in the lactation period. In foremilk the highest content of BSA was also recorded at 2 days pp. From lactation month 2 to 9, stage of lactation had, in general, a slight effect on the variation in the variables measured. The total leukocyte count in residual milk tended to increase as lactation proceeded. The proportion of monocyte-macrophages in foremilk was significantly decreased during the last 4 months. NAGase and BSA in both fractions and ATR in residual milk increased significantly towards the end of the lactation period. From lactation month 4 to 9 the highest recorded ranges of variation between milkings, within quarter and stage of lactation, in the total leukocyte count, proportions of neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocyte-macrophages, NAGase, ATR and BSA in foremilk were 215 × 103ml, 42 %, 34 %, 54 %, 6.68 units, 0.36 units and 0.14 mg/ml respectively. The corresponding figures in residual milk were higher except for the variation in BSA which was slightly lower in residual milk than in foremilk. In residual milk there was a positive correlation between the proportion of neutrophils and the total leukocyte count, when calculated on data from all cows and the entire experimental period. During the oestrous periods, the proportion of neutrophils in residual milk was higher than during the dioestrous periods. Foremilk and residual milk differed in the total as well as the differential leukocyte counts in all the various stages of lactation, whereas the contents of NAGase, ATR and BSA were equal in both fractions. The exception was 2 days pp when the proportions of lymphocytes were equal in both fractions and BSA-significantly higher in foremilk than in residual milk.  相似文献

The wave-like patterns of ovarian follicular development in cattle can be manipulated by shortening the luteal phase with prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF), lengthening the period of follicle dominance with progesterone or curtailing follicle development with GnRH or oestradiol as 17beta, benzoate or cypionate. These hormones can also be used to synchronise ovulation allowing timed inseminations without detected oestrus. Progesterone, PGF, GnRH and oestradiol benzoate have each been used to increase conception rates in some situations, but their use has reduced them in others. For example, inseminations made within 96 h of a single injection of PGF administered during the luteal phase were associated with increased conception rates in dairy cows whereas double injection protocols reduced conception rates. The three forms of oestradiol and GnRH have greater effects on follicular development following divergence and dominance than following wave emergence. This can mean that follicles of differing maturity will be present about 7 days later and can result in varied intervals to the onset of oestrus following a PGF injection. The consequent variation in ovulation time can be reduced by injecting GnRH or an oestradiol during pro-oestrus. This means that some less mature follicles will ovulate, forming corpus luteum (CL) associated with a slower rise in plasma progesterone and lower mid-luteal concentrations. The lower conception rates recorded with single timed inseminations with synchronised ovulations have been associated with increased prevalences of short cycles in lactating dairy cows (with GnRH), with long luteal phases in cows and heifers (with oestradiol benzoate) and with embryo loss following positive pregnancy diagnosis (as with Ovsynch in lactating Holstein cows). Extensive Canadian studies have demonstrated that these same hormones can be successfully used without these limitations and reliably obtaining conception rates over 50% and up to 70% in beef cattle that have been supplemented with a progestin during the period of ovarian follicle synchronisation. The inherently lower fertility of Holstein cows during early lactation may be contributing to the reduced effectiveness of hormonal treatments for synchronised follicle development and ovulation. The role of reduced dose rates of GnRH in compromising this effectiveness needs to be determined if the potential of these treatments realised with beef cattle is to be achieved with lactating Holstein cows.  相似文献
