Gregory A. Petsko is Gyula and Katica Tauber Professor of Biochemistry and Chemistry and Director of the Rosenstiel Basic Medical Sciences Research Center at Brandeis University. He did his undergraduate work at Princeton and his graduate work as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. He held faculty positions at Wayne State University School of Medicine and MIT before moving to Brandeis in 1990. A structural biologist, he is best known for his work, together with his colleague Dagmar Ringe, on the structural basis of enzyme catalytic power and the role of protein dynamics in protein function. Leslie Orgel is a Professor and Senior Fellow at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of California at San Diego. The first part of his career was devoted to the theoretical inorganic chemistry of transition metal ions. This led to the publication of a book on Ligand-Field Theory. Alexander Varshavsky is Smits Professor of Cell Biology at the California Institute of Technology. He moved to Caltech in 1992, after 15 years at the MIT's Department of Biology. He was born and educated in Russia, and was 30 at the time of his emigration to the U.S. in 1977. In Russia, and for a while at MIT, he studied the structure and replication of chromosomes. Over the last 24 years, the work of his laboratory focused on the ubiquitin system and closely related fields. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and has received the Gairdner Award, the Lasker Award, the General Motors Sloan Prize, the Wolf Prize, the Horwitz Prize, and the Wilson Medal.  相似文献

Joel Rosenbaum was born and grew up in Massena, New York state, on the St Lawrence River border with Ontario, Canada. He received his undergraduate and PhD degrees from Syracuse University, and a Masters Degree in high school biology teaching at St Lawrence University. His PhD work was done with the protozoologist, George Holz Jr, and his post doctoral research on cilia and flagella was at the University Of Chicago with Frank Child and Hewson Swift. He has been at Yale University for 37 years where he has taught Cell Biology. His research has been on the synthesis and assembly of the proteins of cilia and flagella, showing that the flagellar axoneme assembles at the distal tip and that detachment of the flagella upregulates the genes for flagellar proteins. More recently his group has shown that this tip assembly process is facilitated by a rapid kinesin and cytoplasmic dynein-mediated motility underneath the flagellar membrane called ‘intraflagellar transport’. He is a runner with more than 20 marathons under his belt.  相似文献

George Oster is Professor of Biophysics, University of California, Berkeley. He received his B.S. at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and his Ph.D. at Columbia University. He began his career in biophysics as a postdoc at the Weizmann Institute under Aharon Katchalsky, where his research involved membrane biophysics and irreversible thermodynamics. His concern for environmental issues led him into population biology, which shaded into evolutionary biology and thence to developmental biology, cell biology and, most recently, protein motors and bacterial motility and pattern formation. His tools are mathematics, physics and computer simulation. He is currently a faculty member in the Departments of Molecular and Cellular Biology and the College of Natural Resources at Berkeley.  相似文献

Philip Ingham grew up in Liverpool and graduated from Cambridge University in 1977. He did his D.Phil in Developmental Genetics at Sussex University and postdoctoral work in Strasbourg, France before joining the laboratory of David Ish-Horowicz at the ICRF Mill Hill Laboratories. Here he applied the emerging technique of tissue in situ hybridisation to the analysis of the Drosophila segmentation genes. After a short spell at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, he rejoined the ICRF as a Research Scientist at the Developmental Biology Unit in Oxford. His group pioneered the analysis of the Hedgehog signalling pathway in Drosophila and in collaboration with the labs of Andy McMahon and Cliff Tabin at Harvard University, discovered the Hedgehog gene family in vertebrates. In 1996 he was appointed Professor of Developmental Genetics at the University of Sheffield where he has established the Centre for Developmental Genetics.  相似文献
