1. Cobalt, copper, zinc and cadmium injected into Carassius auratus in April (water temperature 16°C) increased liver ornithine decarboxylase and adenosylmethionine decarboxylase and not tyrosine aminotransferase activities independently of their accumulation within the liver.2. As previously shown, cadmium stimulated ornithine decarboxylase in November (16°C), but was ineffective in July (23°C).3. Acclimation of fish at 23°C in April and November caused the metal to become ineffective, but acclimation at 15°C in July failed to restore the response to cadmium.4. In February no significant changes occurred either at 14°C or at 23°C with any of the metals.5. Putrescine and polyamine concentrations essentially followed the response of ornithine decarboxylase activity.  相似文献

1. The chief objective was to determine the upper and lower thermal limits for feeding and survival in the stone loach, Noemacheilus barbatulus, using juveniles (total length 30–45 mm, live weight 0.25–0.80 g) from one population and adults (total length 77–100 mm, live weight 3.6–7.9 g) from three populations. 2. Fish were acclimatized to constant temperatures of 3, 7, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 27°C; then the temperature was changed at a rate of 1°C/30min to determine the critical limits for feeding, survival over 7 days (incipient lethal temperature), or survival for 10 min or less (ultimate lethal temperature). The rate of 1°C/30min was the optimum value from preliminary experiments, using nine rates from 0.5°C/48h to 18°Ch?1. As values for adults were not significantly different between populations, they were pooled to provide arithmetic means (with 95% CL) for the thermal limits at each acclimation temperature. 3. Feeding limits increased with acclimation temperature to upper and lower mean values of 28.0 ± 0.15°C and 5.1 ± 0.55°C for adults, 25.0 ± 0.54°C and 6.1 ± 0.92°C for juveniles. Incipient lethal levels defined a tolerance zone within which stone loach survive for a considerable time; upper limits increased with acclimation temperature to reach a maximum plateau of 29.1 ± 0.18°C for adults and 29.0 ± 0.40°C for juveniles; lower limits also increased from near 0°C to 3.0 ± 0.40°C for adults and juveniles. Upper limits for the ultimate lethal level increased with acclimation temperature to a maximum plateau of 33.5°C for adults (95% CL ± 0.19) and juveniles (95% CL ± 0.40), whilst the lower limits increased from near 0°C to 2.5 ± 0.30°C. At acclimation temperatures below 20°C, upper incipient and ultimate lethal values were significantly lower for juveniles than those for adults. 4. The thermal tolerance of stone loach was higher than that of juvenile Atlantic salmon or brown trout, one or both of these species often being dominant in streams with stone loach.  相似文献

1. The objective was to determine the thermal limits for feeding and survival in the bullhead, Cottus gobio, using juveniles (total length 20–30 mm, live weight 0.5–1.5 g) from one population and adults (50–70 mm, 3.5–5.5 g) from three populations. 2. Fish were acclimated to constant temperatures (3, 7, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 27 °C) and the temperature was then changed at a rate of 1 °C /30 min to determine the critical limits for feeding, survival over 7 days (incipient lethal temperature), or survival for 10 min or less (ultimate lethal temperature). The rate of 1 °C/30 min was the optimum value from preliminary experiments, using nine rates from 0.5 °C/48 h to 18 °C h?1. As values for adults were not significantly different between populations, they were pooled to provide arithmetic means (with 95% CL) for the thermal limits at each acclimation temperature. 3. Feeding limits increased with acclimation temperature to upper and lower mean values (± 95% CL) of 26.5 ± 0.16 °C and 4.2 ± 0.20 °C for adults, 26.6 ± 0.59 °C and 5.0 ± 0.55 °C for juveniles. Incipient lethal levels defined a tolerance zone within which fish survive indefinitely; upper limits increased with acclimation temperature to a plateau of 27.6 ± 0.22 °C for adults and 27.5 ± 0.47 °C for juveniles, lower limits increased from near 0 °C to 2.5 ± 0.31 °C for adults and 2.7 ± 0.47 °C for juveniles. Ultimate lethal levels increased with acclimation temperature to a plateau of 32.5 ± 0.24 °C for adults and 32.6 ± 0.46 °C for juveniles, whilst the lower limits increased from near 0 to 0.9 ± 0.29 °C. Upper feeding, incipient and ultimate lethal values were significantly lower for juveniles than those for adults at acclimation temperatures < 20, < 20 and < 15 °C, respectively. 4. The thermal tolerance of bullheads was slightly lower than that of stone loach, similar to that of juvenile Atlantic salmon and higher than that of brown trout; the thermal limits for feeding were much wider than those for salmon or trout.  相似文献

From the mid-19th century to the end of the 20th century, Salvinia natans (L.) All. occurred very rarely in the Vistula Delta (northern Poland), but from the beginning of the 21st century it was present in almost every watercourse and had formed very abundant populations. We examined the influence of temperature on the abundance of this plant and the efficiency of macrospore germination. Field work was carried out in 10 permanent plots every 14 days for 5 years. Macrospores germinate at water temperature of 12.4 ± 0.2°C or higher; at 20°C they develop more effectively than at 15°C. Usually, ice cover on the rivers melts in the second half of March. At this time, macro- and microspores emerge on the water surface and germinate in April. They occur in the water surface film at 15.1 ± 2.4°C and massively die during spring frost. After 1989, March and April mean temperature in the Vistula Delta rose by 1.6°C versus 1901–1988, and by 1.9°C versus 1851–1988. In 1951–1988, the mean temperature for March and April was +4.6°C and was characterized by considerable interannual variation (SD = 1.64), whereas in 1989–2009, it rose to +5.7°C and the variation range narrowed (SD = 1.24). We found that macrospores are active earlier during the warm and mild summers, germination is more effective, survival of young stages is higher, the growing season is longer, and the number of vegetative offsprings in a year is larger.  相似文献

The hygropreference of adult Onychiurus arcticus (Tullberg) was investigated over 2 h at 0, 10 and 20°C, along humidity gradients (12–98% RH) established using different salt solutions. At all temperatures O. arcticus preferred the highest humidity (98% RH). At 0 and 20°C, saturated conditions were preferred to 98% RH. The hygropreference of the mite Lauroppia translamellata (Willmann) was also assessed at 20°C, and no clear RH preference was observed. This species survived the loss of 24.9 ± 2.1% of its initial water content when held for 24 h at 20°C and 12% RH. A range of assays designed to eliminate the influence of thigmotactic behaviour and population clumping permit exclusion of these factors as being responsible for the observed results. The mean initial water content of O. arcticus samples (71.7 ± 10.9, 73.4 ± 4.0 and 73.8 ± 23.5% at 0, 10 and 20°C, respectively) did not differ significantly between temperatures, indicating that the results were not influenced by differences in initial hydrated state. The percentage water loss of individuals within the gradient increased with temperature, and differed significantly between regimes. The ecological significance of the observed humidity preferences are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of particle size, storage temperature, and duration of storage on the physical stability and morphology of polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanospheres and microspheres. PLGA nanospheres and microspheres containing the fluorescent dye, Bodipy, were prepared in varying sizes by controlling the method and degree of agitation during the emulsification phase of preparation. Mean diameters of the particles were measured by dynamic light scattering. To evaluate the effect of storage temperature and duration of storage on the extent of aggregation, nanospheres and microspheres were stored at 4°C, 25°C, 37°C, and 50°C for 6 days and then monitored using both confocal and scanning electron microscopy. The mean ±SD diameters of PLGA particles containing Bodipy were: 266.9±2.8, 351.6±1.8, 988.8±14.1, and 1865.9±67.0 nm. The extent of aggregation of the particulate delivery system decreased as the mean diameter increased, and increased as the storage temperature increased. The maximum extent of aggregation was observed with the smallest (266 nm) nanospheres. Microspheres did not aggregate. The aggregation of nanospheres was significantly reduced by introducing an additional evaporation step during preparation, suggesting that migration of residual dichloromethane from within the nanospheres may have dissolved the PLGA on the surface. The extent of aggregation of nanospheres increased as the temperature was increased from 4°C to 50°C, and decreased as particle size increased. To avoid aggregation, PLGA nanospheres should be stored at 4°C.  相似文献

At the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the north‐eastern Indian Ocean >592 fishes from at least 11 species died in a series of events in December 2007, January and February 2008 and April 2009. The dead fishes were from a wide range of taxonomic families, indicating that conditions exceeded the tolerances of a broad array of species. The 2007–2008 die‐off events occurred on the warmest and calmest days of a significantly warmer and calmer summer. Fishes died in the southern inshore areas of the coral atoll lagoon at survey sites where seawater temperature was highest (33–35° C) and dissolved oxygen was lowest (1·4–1·8 mg l?1). The water temperature at these fish‐kill survey sites (33–35° C) was significantly warmer than previous years (1997 to 2005, mean ±s.e. = 28·7 ± 0·1° C). Fishes probably died because they were unable to obtain the additional oxygen required for metabolism at higher temperatures. Repeated die‐off events over the last 130 years indicate that some fishes have not yet adapted to rises in seawater temperature. This study provides empirical evidence to support suggestions that differences in physiological tolerances to increasing sea temperatures may be important in determining the structure of future coral‐reef fish communities with respect to climate change.  相似文献

Obese subjects may be more vulnerable to injury from heat stress, and appear to be less efficient at thermoregulation. Sweat rate, tympanic temperature and osmolality in obese subjects were investigated in Japan during two seasons. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between obesity, thermoregulatory response and season. Five obese (BMI, 32.0?±?4.9 kg/m2) and five non-obese (BMI, 23.2?±?2.9 kg/m2) men participated in this experiment at latitude 35°10′ N and longitude 136°57.9′E. The average atmospheric temperature was 29.1?±?1.0 °C in summer and 3.3?±?1.4 °C in winter. Tympanic temperature and sweat rate were measured during leg water immersion at 42 °C for 30 min. Blood samples were analyzed for plasma osmolality. The relationship between tympanic temperature and sweat rate decreased significantly in obese compared to in non-obese subjects in both seasons, there being a lowered sweat rate for any core temperature in obese subjects. Plasma osmolality was significantly higher in obese than in non-obese subjects in both seasons. Thermal sensation increased significantly in non-obese than in obese in winter but not in summer. Our data show that thermoregulatory responses are attenuated in obese subjects compared with controls, suggesting that obese people are at increased risk of heat-related illnesses.  相似文献

Climate change alters the abiotic constraints faced by plants, including increasing temperature and water stress. These changes may affect flower development and production of flower rewards, thus altering plant–pollinator interactions. Here, we investigated the consequences of increased temperature and water stress on plant growth, floral biology, flower‐reward production, and insect visitation of a widespread bee‐visited species, Borago officinalis. Plants were grown for 5 weeks under three temperature regimes (21, 24, and 27°C) and two watering regimes (well‐watered and water‐stressed). Plant growth was more affected by temperature rise than water stress, and the reproductive growth was affected by both stresses. Vegetative traits were stimulated at 24°C, but impaired at 27°C. Flower development was mainly affected by water stress, which decreased flower number (15 ± 2 flowers/plant in well‐watered plants vs. 8 ± 1 flowers/plant under water stress). Flowers had a reduced corolla surface under temperature rise and water stress (3.8 ± 0.5 cm2 in well‐watered plants at 21°C vs. 2.2 ± 0.1 cm2 in water‐stressed plants at 27°C). Both constraints reduced flower‐reward production. Nectar sugar content decreased from 3.9 ± 0.3 mg/flower in the well‐watered plants at 21°C to 1.3 ± 0.4 mg/flower in the water‐stressed plants at 27°C. Total pollen quantity was not affected, but pollen viability decreased from 79 ± 4% in the well‐watered plants at 21°C to 25 ± 9% in the water‐stressed plants at 27°C. Flowers in the well‐watered plants at 21°C received at least twice as many bumblebee visits compared with the other treatments. In conclusion, floral modifications induced by abiotic stresses related to climate change affect insect behavior and alter plant–pollinator interactions.  相似文献

Many garter snakes, Thamnophis melanogaster, at a desert pond first started foraging for tadpoles when mean water surface temperature was about 20 °C (at 0945–1015 h), and the number of snakes tripled when water temperature reached about 24 °C (at 1100–1130 h). In two years, snakes foraged in April and May, but not in March when water never reached 23 °C and only exceeded 20 °C for a few hours after the usual foraging hours. Snakes in the laboratory dedicated increasing amounts of time to underwater foraging as air and water temperatures increased from 9 °C to 29 °C, and their rate of attacks on fish increased steeply and progressively above an apparent threshold lying between roughly 19 °C and 24 °C, up to at least 29 °C. Temperature may limit T. melanogaster's foraging at the pond to the hours after roughly 0900 h and to the period after roughly March, despite evidence that prey abundance is maximal in March.  相似文献

Biomass production by Aspergillus fumigatus was greatest at 40–45°C and was associated with an increase in concentration of the diamine putrescine and activity of its biosynthetic enzyme ornithine decarboxylase. Concentrations of the other amines, cadaverine, spermidine and spermine were considerably lower than putrescine concentration and did not change significantly over the temperature range 20–50°C. This is surprising in view of the greatly increased flux of label from ornithine through to spermidine at 45 and 50°C, indicating an increased formation of this triamine. It is suggested that there was increased formation of spermidine derivatives at these temperatures. Interestingly, there was greatly increased formation of the higher homologues of cadaverine, aminopropylcadaverine and N,N′-bis(3-aminopropyl)cadaverine, in A. fumigatus at 45 and 50°C.  相似文献

The activity of ornithine decarboxylase is increased 20–500-fold in three situations in tadpole hepatic tissue. Two effects are thyroxine-induced. The first is transient and occurs 3–8 hr after the injection of thyroxine; the second occurs several days after the hormone injection; and the third effect is independent of exogenous thyroxine and occurs 2–10 hr after tadpoles which had been kept in water at 5° are transferred to water at 25°C. The latter effect, which is maximal if tadpoles are kept at 5° for 24 hr, is partially inhibited by cycloheximide.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The chief objective was to construct a thermal tolerance polygon for juvenile Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., using fish from four groups and two populations: two age groups from one population (0+, 1+ parr from River Leven), two size groups from the other population (slow and Fast growing 1+ parr from River Lune). 2. Fish were acclimated to constant temperatures of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 27°C; then the temperature was raised or lowered at 1°C h?1 to determine the upper and lower limits for feeding and survival over 10 min, 100 min, 1000 min and 7 days. As they were not significantly different between the four groups of fish, values at each acclimation temperature were pooled to provide arithmetic means (with SE) for the thermal tolerance polygon. 3. Incipient lethal levels (survival over 7 days) defined a tolerance zone within which salmon lived for a considerable time; upper mean incipient values increased with increasing acclimation temperature to reach a maximum of 27.8±0.2°C, lower mean incipient values were below 0°C and were therefore undetermined at acclimation temperatures <20°C but increased at higher acclimation temperatures to 2.2±0.4°C. Resistance to thermal stress outside the tolerance zone was a function of time; the ultimate lethal level (survival for 10 min) increased with acclimation temperature to a maximum of 33°C whilst the minimum value remained close to 0°C. Temperature limits for feeding increased slightly with acclimation temperature to upper and lower mean values of 22.5±0.3°C and 7.0±0.3°C. 4. In spite of different methodologies, values in the present investigation are similar to those obtained in previous, less comprehensive studies in the laboratory. They also agree with field observations on the temperature limits for feeding and survival. Thermal tolerance polygons are now available for eight species of salmonids and show that the highest temperature limits for feeding and survival are those recorded for juvenile Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Necremnus artynes is native to the Mediterranean region where it has been observed in greenhouses parasitising Tuta absoluta on tomato. In this study, we evaluated the suitability of the different instars of T. absoluta as hosts for N. artynes and the life-history traits of N. artynes at three different temperature regimes (20, 25 and 30°C) on third instar T. absoluta larvae infesting tomato. N. artynes females preferred third instar T. absoluta larvae for oviposition, whereas host-feeding was significantly higher on the second instar larvae. Duration of life stages was no different between sexes but was affected by temperature, being significantly reduced as temperature increased. Pre-imaginal survival also decreased with temperature and the percentage of females was ca. 70% under all temperature regimes. Adult longevity was 1.5-fold significantly greater at 25°C compared to 30°C with no differences between 20 and 25°C. Fecundity was estimated at 36.3±7.80, 51.8±10.65 and 52.1±10.03 eggs/female and host-feeding at 59.5±8.50, 71.6±12.07, 51.4±7.89 hosts/female at 20, 25 and 30°C, respectively, although these differences among temperatures were not significant. However, oviposition and feeding rate were significantly higher at 30 and 20°C, respectively. The estimated intrinsic rate of increase (r m) was significantly higher as temperature increased from 20 to 30°C and it was greater than those reported for T. absoluta on tomato, indicating the potential of N. artynes to control this pest.  相似文献

Mirogrex terrae-sanctae is a commercial, sardine-like cyprinid fish in the Sea of Galilee. The fish spawns from December to the end of March. Females collected at the quiescent phase of the cycle (June) were exposed to four combinations of photoperiod and temperature for 3 months. The highest GSI (2.44 ± 0.22) was found in females exposed to simulated winter conditions (16°C, 9L) while the lowest GSI (0.65 ± 0.04) was found in fish exposed to simulated summer conditions (27°C, 14L). The GSI of fish maintained at the unnatural combination of 16°C, 14L (1.30 ± 0.09) did not differ from that of fish maintained at the other unnatural combination of 27°C, 9L (1.07 ± 0.11). However, histological examinations revealed that vitellogenic oocytes were present only in fish maintained at low temperature regimes, which implies that the growth of the ovarian mass in the 27°C, 9L group was due mainly to oogonial proliferation and that vitellogenesis was inhibited in Mirogrex at a high temperature. Both protein and calcium concentrations increased in the serum of fish following injections of oestradiol-17β. The increase of calcium was evident only in the non-filtrable (bound) fraction, suggesting that the total serum calcium above 13 mg% could be used as an indirect parameter for circulating vitelloprotein. Fish collected at the quiescent phase were injected with oestradiol (50 μg/fish c. 15 g body weight) and subsequently transferred to tanks maintained at either 12°, 20° or 27°C. The total serum calcium increased to 23.0 ± 1.75 mg% in the fish maintained for 8 days at 20°C. This was significantly higher than the concentration of calcium in the serum of fish maintained at either 12°C (7.8 ± 0.52) or 27°C(l1.8 ± 0.77). This implies that the temperature may affect ovarian recrudescence by modulating the response of the liver to oestrogen, allowing the oestrogen-induced vitellogenesis to be relatively high in the cool environment during winter.  相似文献

Spores (collected at 10?±?1 °C, 2 h after releasing) and young gametophytes (newly generated from spores cultured at 10?±?1 °C for 8 days) of Saccharina japonica were first cultured at 15?±?1, 19?±?1, and 23?±?1 °C for various times (2, 5, and 8 days) and then at 10?±?1 °C (culturing patterns S and G, respectively). Spores were also cultured at a constant of 10?±?1 °C (pattern C) and used as the control. The length and percentage of young gametophytes, size and percentage of gametophytes, and ratio of female to male gametophytes were measured in order to determine the effect of temperature on the development of gametophytes. Temperature and exposure time of spores and young gametophytes at the first culturing temperature significantly affected the development of gametophytes as were indicated by all biological parameters except the ratio of female to male gametophytes. The spores were more sensitive to temperature than young gametophytes. Gametophytes developed from the spores that survived temperature stress can recover their growth. High temperature selection at the early developmental stages of gametophytes was effective for screening gametophytes applicable for breeding high temperature-resistant varieties and hybrids.  相似文献

This study compared heat strain during walking while wearing impermeable protective suits between fan-precooling and nonprecooling conditions. Six males engaged in 60 min of walking at a moderate speed (~2.5 km/h) in a hot environment (37 °C, 40 % relative humidity). Fanning using a fan (4.5 m/s) and spraying water over the body before wearing the suits produced significantly lower rectal temperature before the walking (37.3?±?0.1 °C vs. 37.0?±?0.1 °C, P?P?相似文献

1. The life cycle of Leuctra nigra (Olivier) took 2 years in a small stream in the English Lake District and the exponential growth of the larvae was scarcely affected by variations in water temperature (range 4.2-14.0°C). Mean growth rates for three year-classes were 0.43±0.01, 0.42±0.01, 0.39±0.05% body length day?1. There were thirteen or fourteen larval instars for males and fourteen or fifteen for females. The ratio between successive instars was a constant 1.20 (conformed with Dyar's rule). 2. Larval growth and mortality were exponential at six constant temperatures (5.9, 8.2, 12.1, 15.8, 18.2, 19.8°C) in the laboratory. Mean growth rates (% body length day?1) increased directly with temperature from 0.37 (5.9°C) to 0.55 (19.8°C). Mean mortality rates (% day?1) increased directly with temperature from 0.20 (5.9°C) to 0.26 (12.1°C) and then markedly increased to 0.54-0.58 at the three higher temperatures. Only 7-10% of animals completed their life cycle at the three higher temperatures compared with 23–27% at the three lower temperatures. Egg production also decreased considerably at the higher temperatures. 3. As growth rates in the stream and laboratory were similar at similar temperatures (<14°C), the optimum conditions for growth in the laboratory were probably similar to those in the stream; therefore resources such as food and space were not restricting growth in the stream. 4. The implications of the temperature-induced changes in growth and mortality are discussed and it is concluded that although the life cycle can change from semivoltine to univoltine with increasing temperature, the costs of a univoltine life cycle are high in terms of survival and egg production, both of which decreased markedly between 12.1 and 15.8°C. Therefore the optimum habitat for this species appears to be a summer cool stream (maximum temperature <14°C) and the optimal life cycle appears to be about 2 years from egg to adult.  相似文献

We report the effects of storage time and pretreatment on seed germination of Fokienia hodginsii. Lower mean germination was observed in seeds stored for 2 years (6.41 ± 1.23 seeds/replicate) compared with those stored for 1 year (8.52 ± 1.06 seeds/replicate). Seeds collected from a southern location had statistically higher mean germination (9.67 ± 1.28 seeds/replicate) than those collected from a northern location (7.99 ± 1.36 seeds/replicate). Higher mean T50 was observed in seeds stored for 2 years (37.02 ± 4.43 days) compared with those stored for 1 year (30.69 ± 5.06 days). Mean germination of untreated fresh seeds was 9.97 ± 1.34 seeds/replicate and that of treated fresh seeds in 60°C water was 12.95 ± 1.24 seeds/replicate. Fresh seeds treated with 50°C and 70°C water had a significantly lower mean germination compared with untreated seeds and seeds treated in 60°C water. Mean T50 was lowest in seeds treated with 60°C water.  相似文献
