Hawaiian streams contain some of the most unique species of aquaticinvertebrates known. In the 1960's a North American net spinningcaddisfly, Cheumatopsyche pettiti was inadvertentlyintroduced and is found in most perennial streams on Oahu, Maui,Molokai and Kauai. We investigated the life cycle of thistemperately evolved caddisfly in Waikolu Stream, Molokai. The lifecycle of C. pettiti was interpreted as probably multivoltinewith continuous recruitment throughout the year. At all samplingdates, instars I–V were present as well as pupae and adults.Detritus accounted for >50% of the gut contents of all larvae.Diatoms and other algae accounted for the remaining 50% of thediet. Cheumatopsyche pettiti has also apparently adapted toextremes in stream flows by building smaller capture nets andrudimentary retreats, usually on bedrock or firmly embeddedcobble.  相似文献

Telmatogeton torrenticola Terry is a large endemic chironomid (lastinstar >20 mm) commonly found in high gradient Hawaiian streams on smoothrock surfaces with torrential, shallow flow and in the splash zones ofwaterfalls. We have quantified benthic water flow in larval habitat in a 50m segment of Kinihapai Stream, Maui using a thermistor-based microcurrentmeter. Under base flow conditions at sites suitable for larval attachment, depth was measured and bottom water velocity measurements were made 2 mmabove populations. Larval densities ranged from 386.9–1178m–2, habitat bottom water velocities from 13.4–64.2 cms–1, and water depths from 1.5–50 cm. Bottom velocitiesof sites with zero larvae ranged from 20.8–21.8 cm s–1with depths from 50 to >160 cm. Larval densities were greatest inareas with high bottom water velocities and shallow depths. Stepwisemultiple regression analyses showed that density could be confidentlypredicted best by Froude number (r=0.81; p=0.008). In the absence of Froudenumber as a regression term, the best variable to predict larval density wasbottom velocity ratio: relative depth ratio (r=0.75; p=0.019). In addition, the torrential habitat of the larvae was always characterized by aperiphyton community that appeared to be the primary food resource for thelarvae. These data suggest that torrential flows over appropriate substratesare important factors regulating habitat availability for T. torrenticolaand that reduced discharge (e.g. affected by water diversions) couldsignificantly reduce the amount of available habitat for this organism andother flow sensitive stream fauna.  相似文献

Stream fauna communities were studied in the Baharini Springbrook and the Njoro River, which flow into Lake Nakuru. The streams have significantly different flow regimes. Consequently, discharge-related factors influence their faunal composition and abundance. The Baharini Springbrook is perennial, slow-flowing with low steady discharge, a higher conductivity and a low conductivity gradient along its course. The Njoro River is intermittent, fast-flowing with a higher and variable discharge, lower conductivity and a steeper conductivity gradient. Due to its permanent and steady surface stream flow, the Baharini Springbrook has a higher number of invertebrate species and higher abundances than the Njoro River. However, in spite of the intermittent nature of the Njoro River, during periods of relatively steady discharge the composition of its fauna is similar to that of the Baharini Springbrook. Similarity in the substratum characteristics of the two streams and their close proximity is a possible explanation for the close relationship in their faunal composition. At the onset of flow after a drought, rapid colonisation of the lowland intermittent stretch of the Njoro River occurred probably by drift from upstream perennial sections and/or from the hyporheos. Initial small spates at the onset of surface flow seem not to affect the invertebrate abundance, but later bigger spates during and after much heavier rains reduced the faunal abundance significantly. The recovery of faunal abundance to pre-flood levels in the Njoro River was completed in 27 days. Taxon richness was, however, less affected by the spates.  相似文献

The hypotheses of this study were (i) that shovelnose sturgeon would make upstream movements to spawn, (ii) movement of spawning fish would be greater in a year with higher discharge, and (iii) that spawning fish would have greater movements than reproductively inactive fish. Shovelnose sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorynchus (Rafinesque, 1820) in five reproductive categories (e.g. males, confirmed spawning females, potentially spawning females, atretic females, and reproductively inactive females) were tracked in 2008 and 2009. All reproductive categories, except reproductively inactive females, exhibited large‐scale movements and had omnidirectional movements. No differences in movement rates were observed in confirmed spawning females between years despite a 45% higher peak discharge in 2008 (839 m3 s?1) than in 2009 (578 m3 s?1). A peak discharge was obtained at a faster rate in 2008 (165 m3 s?1 day?1) than in 2009 (39 m3 s?1 day?1), and high discharge was of greater duration in 2008. Reproductively inactive females did not exhibit large‐scale movements and their movement rate differed from other reproductive categories. Shovelnose sturgeon spawned in both years, despite highly varying hydrographs between years.  相似文献

The associations were quantified between daily and interannual variation in the timing of a closed population of lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens migration and arrival at spawning sites with stream environmental and lunar covariates. Spawning data were gathered from 1262 fish in Black Lake, Michigan 2001 to 2008 and by video monitoring 2000 to 2002. Sex-specific variation in responses to external cues was also tested. Results showed that a greater number of individuals initiated migration from lake to riverine habitats at dawn and dusk relative to other times of the day. Current and lagged effects of water temperature and river discharge, and periods in the lunar cycle were important variables in models quantifying movements into the river and timing of adult arrival at spawning sites. Different suites of covariates were predictive of A. fulverscens responses during different periods of the spawning season. The timing of initiation of migration and spawning, and the importance of covariates to the timing of these events, did not differ between sexes. Stream flow and temperature covaried with other variables including day length and the lunar cycle. Anthropogenic disruption of relationships among variables may mean that environmental cues may no longer reliably convey information for Acipenseriformes and other migratory fishes.  相似文献

Synopsis Egg size, fecundity, nest site selection, and breeding structure of the amphidromous Hawaiian goby Lentipes concolor were studied to determine if there was any relationship between these aspects of the breeding biology of this fish and the very long larval period of Hawaiian stream gobies. To do this, these parameters were compared with those known for other gobioid fishes. While eggs were small and females were found to lay up to four nests in a season, reproductive biology and mating behavior of L. concolor were typical of many gobies in spite of its amphidromous life history pattern. Lentipes concolor nests were found from October to June with a spawning peak in February. Nests tended to be positioned closer to the stream bank, and under larger rocks than if they were situated randomly. Depth and mean water column velocity over nest sites did not differ from that at randomly selected points in the stream.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Maui Parrotbills (Pseudonestor xanthophrys), critically endangered Hawaiian honeycreepers endemic to the island of Maui, are restricted to a single population of ~500 individuals located in remote, mountainous terrain. From January to June 2006–2011, we located nests and fledglings in the Hanawi Natural Area Reserve (NAR) in east Maui, Hawaii, to document nest success and annual reproductive success. Nest success is a commonly used measure of productivity and is a central component of many demographic studies. Annual reproductive success is less frequently documented because greater effort is required to monitor the reproductive success of breeding pairs through time. However, for species whose nests are difficult to locate or access, such as Maui Parrotbills, the presence or absence of fledged young may provide a more accurate measure of breeding success than monitoring nests. During our study, we located and determined the outcome of 30 nests to document nest success, and monitored 106 territories for the presence or absence of fledglings to calculate annual reproductive success. Nest success probability was 19% (N= 30) and seasonal nest success was 46%. During our monitoring efforts, 49 of 106 breeding pairs produced a single fledged young. Because parrotbills typically have single egg clutches and only re‐nest after nests fail, the presence or absence of a fledgling is an indication of a pair's overall reproductive success for a breeding season. Based on the number of fledglings per pair, our estimate of annual reproductive success was 46%, confirming our initial productivity estimate from nests. Thus, our results indicate that the two methods, determining annual reproductive success by monitoring fledglings and calculating nest success, provide similar estimates of annual productivity for Maui Parrotbills. Based on our estimates, the parrotbill population appears to be demographically stable. However, our productivity estimate was based only on the population at Hanawi, an area representing just 3% of the total range of parrotbills. Thus, our results may not accurately reflect the status of parrotbills over their entire range.  相似文献

Tropical island stream ecosystems continue to be threatened by increasing anthropogenic demands for freshwater, with many streams dammed or diverted. Stream flow amendments can have substantial effects on aquatic insect populations of tropical archipelagoes. In Hawaiian streams, an endemic Diptera community of the following genera dominates cascades and other torrential habitats: Telmatogeton Schiner (Chironomidae), Procanace Hendel (Canacidae), Scatella Robineau-Desvoidy (Ephydridae). Larval densities, standing stock biomass (SSB, as ash-free dry mass [AFDM]), and monthly secondary production of Telmatogeton and Procanace were measured during two summers of significantly different stream discharge in Iao Valley, Maui, Hawaii. Very few Scatella larvae were collected (<20 larvae for both years combined), so they were omitted from subsequent analyses. Stream discharge decreased approximately 40% from 1994 to 1995, providing a ‘natural test’ of the effects of reduced stream flow on these torrenticolous populations between two years. Combined Telmatogeton and Procanace SSB (total torrential community SSB) was 3176 and 1683 mg AFDM m−2 for 1994 and 1995, respectively, with Telmatogeton accounting for >95% in both years due to significantly larger body size and high density. The SSB of Telmatogeton significantly decreased from 3138 to 1622 mg AFDM m−2 from 1994 to 1995 but increased for Procanace (37.6–60.9 mg AFDM m−2, respectively). Total torrential community secondary production was 31% lower in 1994 (12,833 mg AFDM m−2 mo−1) compared to 1995 (8855 mg AFDM m−2 mo−1), reflecting the Telmatogeton proportion of total community production (99%); however, Procanace production increased by 40%. Monthly P/B ratios indicated that biomass turnover was generally high and increased for Telmatogeton from 1994 (3.8) to 1995 (5.1), whereas it remained lower and did not change between years for Procanace (1.7). A natural drought of the Iao Stream valley was associated with structural and functional changes in two endemic aquatic insects; these results are a conservative indication of permanent stream flow reductions from anthropogenic withdrawal (e.g., dams and diversions).  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive biology of one of the poorly known armoured catfishes, Loricaria uracantha, was studied in Panama. Natural nesting sites consisted of cavities in pieces of wood, open at both ends and positioned above the stream bottom, but artificial cavities of PVC pipe were readily used. Males possess bony bristles on the head and pectoral fins which contact the female prior to oviposition. Males spawned with up to five females in short succession and remained with the eggs until hatching. Following hatching many initiated another spawning cycle. One male was reproductively active for 73 days during which it completed five distinct reproductive cycles. Spawning extended throughout the year.  相似文献

Synopsis Seasonal abundance and the re-establishment of stocks of iwana charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis f. pluvius were studied in the Jadani Stream, Hakusan National Park, central Japan, between 1984 and 1989 after the introduction of a moratorium on fishing. Stream conditions were severely damaged by dumped materials from the construction of a mountain road between 1967 and 1977. The densities of iwana increased markedly in the upper reaches and slightly in the middle reaches of the stream and showed marked seasonal fluctuations over the study period. Data shows that the iwana has a high potential reproductive capacity under degraded stream conditions. However, the population density of iwana remained low in the lower reaches, where the stream conditions were more severely damaged not only by construction of the mountain road but also abstraction of water for hydro-electric generation. We review also the state of native iwana and problems relating to its conservation in Japan.  相似文献

Larvae of the Hawaiian amphidromous goby Lentipes concolor settled after a mean length of larval life (LLL) of 86·2±8·5 days (n=236, range=63–106 days) at a mean size of 16·0±0·7 mm LT (n=154, range=14·1-17·9 mm). Mean LLL for L. concolor was about twice that typically reported for tropical marine gobiids. Variation in LLL (CV=10%) and size at settlement (CV=4%) were low, and comparable to that for marine gobiids. LLL and LT were weakly positively correlated (Pearson's correlation coefficient r=0·50, P<0·0001). Larvae settled after shorter planktonic lives and at smaller sizes during months with warmer ocean temperatures. Inter-island variation in LLL did not support a dominant south-east to north-west larval drift, following the dominant south-east to north-west flow of prevailing currents in the Archipelago. Instead, recruits on Maui Island, centrally located in the archipelago, had shorter LLL than recruits to upstream Hawai'i and downstream Kaua'i islands. These findings have important implications for understanding the complex life history dynamics of amphidromous fishes as well as their management.  相似文献

Six fish species were studied in an intermittent lowland stream in Trinidad, West Indies for 28 months from 1980 to 1982. They were Gasteropelecus sternicla, Corynopoma riisei, Astyanax bimaculatus, Hemigrammus unilineatus, Corydoras aeneus and Poecilia reticulata. Peaks in GSIs and presence of mature adults and juveniles, as determined from monthly field collections, indicated reproduction coincident with the rainy seasons in all species except Poecilia. Gasteropelecus bred for a short period at the beginning of the main rainy season while Corynopoma, Corydoras and Hemigrammus had extended periods of breeding activity each year coincident with high rainfall. The presence of juveniles suggests that Astyanax also bred during the rainy season. Poecilia reproduced continuously throughout the study period but exhibited discharge-related adult stock fluctuations that may have influenced reproductive activity. Maximum ovarian fecundity correlated with species size suggested body size limitation on fecundity for small species such as Corynopoma and Hemigrammus. Size frequency distributions of oocytes in mature ovaries indicate synchronised ovum maturation in Astyanax and possibly Gasteropelecus, while Hemigrammus, Corynopoma and Corydoras showed evidence of continuous maturation of oocytes and multiple spawning. Prolonged small brood spawning was confirmed in the laboratory for Corynopoma and Hemigrammus and resulted in spawning fecundities up to 11 times greater than ovarian fecundities for Corynopoma. It is concluded that the conditions of intermittency in this stream did not significantly alter the reproductive styles of these species as described for other Neotropical environments, perhaps because of their opportunistic nature. Patterns of spawning for the characoids can be directly related to size and phylogeny.  相似文献

Life-history traits of Acrossocheilus fasciatus were examined using 384 specimens collected monthly during May 2009 and April 2010 in the Huishui Stream of the Qingyi watershed, China. Using scales for age determination, female and male fish comprised five and four age groups, respectively. The monthly changes in marginal increment ratio suggested that annuli on scales were formed during March through May. Total lengths back-calculated significantly increased with age for both sexes and varied significantly between the two sexes at each age. The fact that females had larger body size and grew faster than males indicated the sexual size dimorphism for this species. Both sexes got their 50% maturity at age 3, when females and males were 105.3 and 112.1?mm total length, respectively. Based on the monthly changes in the gonado-somatic index and egg-development process, fish spawned from April through August. Absolute fecundity ranged from 295 to 3,573 eggs per fish and increased significantly with age. But relative fecundity, ranging from 11.77 to 69.96?eggs/g, was not significantly different among age groups. Compared with the life-history traits of an upstream population in the Puxi Stream (a headwater stream within this study watershed), the downstream population of A. fasciatus in the Huishui Stream (a 4th-order stream) exhibits larger body size, faster somatic growth, later sexual maturity, and lower reproductive investment. These variations in life-history strategies between the two populations could perhaps be explained by the spatial heterogeneity in habitat environment along the upstream–downstream gradient in this watershed.  相似文献

Exotic poeciliid fishes introduced into Hawaiian freshwaters are responsible for the introduction of several exotic parasites, of which the most important are Camallanus cotti and Bothriocephalus acheilognathi in terms of potential disease threat to native stream fishes. This roundworm and tapeworm are the most prevalent and abundant freshwater fish helminths in Hawaiian streams. This study examined the seasonal and yearly population structure of C. cotti and B. acheilognathi to determine if the tropical Hawaiian environment characterized by low climatic variability permits continuous opportunities for parasite transmission regardless of time of year. Camallanus cotti displayed seasonal differences in prevalence and mean abundance, whereas B. acheilognathi did not. Camallanus cotti prevalence and mean abundance were higher in the Hawaiian summer (47.7%, 0.79) than in winter (25.8%, 0.36). A seasonal relationship of C. cotti levels is likely explained by extensive rains associated with the Hawaiian winter season, which may act to decrease parasite transmission by flushing infected poeciliid hosts, intermediate copepod hosts, and possibly free-living infective worm stages downstream. Bothriocephalus acheilognathi displayed low prevalence and mean abundance in both summer (4.0%, 0.06) and winter (6.5%, 0.07), and it may be difficult to detect seasonal changes due to these low levels. Camallanus cotti prevalence and mean abundance remained relatively constant from the summer of 1995 to the summer of 1999, indicating that levels of this roundworm are stable in Waianu Stream. Whereas B. acheilognathi prevalence and mean abundance were low during the summer of 1995 and the summer of 1997, a dramatic peak in prevalence and mean abundance was observed in the summer of 1998 (41.2%, 1.06), with levels decreasing sharply in the summer of 1999 (4.4%, 0.07). It appears that B. acheilognathi also is present in stable populations at low levels, even though levels rose sharply during a single year.  相似文献

Members of the family Carangidae are top-level predators and highly prized food and sport fishes. Although ecologically and economically important, little is known about the biology of numerous species in the family. This is particularly true of the jacks Caranx ignobilis and C. melampygus, which have experienced recent population reductions around the high Hawaiian Islands due to overfishing. Previous studies have documented territorial tendencies as well as cases of long-distance excursions in both species, suggesting populations may exhibit a range of structure at the genetic level. To explore this possibility, mitochondrial DNA ATPase6 and ATPase8 gene sequence variation was assessed from 91 individuals (33 C. ignobilis and 58 C. melampygus) spanning the islands of Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, Maui, and Hawai'i. Although a total of 20 distinct haplotypes (8 for C. ignobilis; 12 for C. melampygus) were recovered, no evidence of population structure was found for either species across the examined geographic range. However, distinct demographic patterns were identified, implying differing evolutionary histories and/or population dynamics. Additionally, ~ 6% of the examined C. ignobilis were C. ignobilis × C. melampygus hybrids because they harbored mitochondrial haplotypes typical of C. melampygus. These hybrids contribute to measurable gene flow between the species and may play a significant role in the evolution of the genus.  相似文献

In resident manta rays (Manta alfredi) off Maui, sexual maturity appears delayed until growth exceeds 90% of maximum size, an indicator that large body size provides a reproductive advantage at the expense of a shorter reproductive time period. In this study, 286 surveys were conducted between 2005 and 2010 using photo-identification and photogrammetry to study the reproductive ecology of a resident population of manta rays off Maui, Hawaii, and investigate the reproductive benefits of large body size in each sex. Although reproductive activities occurred year-round, mating trains and late-term pregnant females were significantly more likely to be observed during the winter months. Some females were pursued by males during both winter and summer of the same year, suggesting multiple ovulations may be possible in a single year. Males likely detect a female’s reproductive state by positioning directly behind her, or passing through her bodily excretions. The mean pregnancy rate was estimated at 0.56 pregnancies/adult female/year with larger females pregnant more often, and more likely in consecutive years. The operational sex ratio was heavily skewed with 2.68 adult males per reproductively available female. Although males appear to compete with one another for females within a mating train, no direct physical competition was ever observed between males. Evidence of highly dynamic mating trains lasting more than one day suggests endurance rivalry may be the primary mating strategy among males, during which larger males may benefit from greater energy reserves. The study area appears to be an important staging area for mating individuals in this population.  相似文献

A population of the lepidostomatid caddisfly, Lasiocephala basalis, was studied in a third order stream, the Ohe, in Hesse, Germany. L. basalis showed an intimate association with wood debris in all of its aquatic life stages. Larvae exhibited a significant preference for organic substrates such as woody debris, leaves, and submerged alder roots. Gut content analysis revealed leaf material and wood fragments as the dominant larval food items classifying larvae as facultative xylophagous. Larval dominance on wood during spring corresponded to minimal leaf litter abundance. In winter, during periods of high discharge, the most important larval habitat was the submerged alder roots at the stream margin, thus acting as flow refugia. Most pupal cases were attached to submerged logs and roots. In addition, most of the egg masses were found on these two substrates. The role of L. basalis larvae in wood degradation is discussed.  相似文献

Islands can be sites of dynamic evolutionary radiations, and the Hawaiian Islands have certainly given us a bounty of insights into the processes and mechanisms of diversification. Adaptive radiations in silverswords and honeycreepers have inspired a generation of biologists with evidence of rapid diversification that resulted in exceptional levels of ecological and morphological diversity. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, tiny waterfall‐climbing gobies make a case for their place among Hawaiian evolutionary elite. Moody et al. ( 2015 ) present an analysis of gene flow and local adaptation in six goby populations on Kaua'i and Hawai'i measured in three consecutive years to try to disentangle the relative role of local adaptation and gene flow in shaping diversity within Sicyopterus stimpsoni. Their study shows that strong patterns of local selection result in streams with gobies adapted to local conditions in spite of high rates of gene flow between stream populations and no evidence for significant genetic population structure. These results help us understand how local adaptation and gene flow are balanced in gobies, but these fishes also offer themselves as a model that illustrates why adaptive diversification in Hawai'i's marine fauna is so different from the terrestrial fauna.  相似文献
