The nine oceanic islands that comprise the Azores archipelago are located in the middle of the northern Atlantic Ocean. In this isolated archipelago, there is a rich fossil record in one of the islands, Santa Maria. In this island, samples were collected in the Upper Miocene composite section of Malbusca outcrop, located in the southern shore of the island, and the fossil marine Ostracoda were studied. This work represents the first report of fossil ostracods from the Azores archipelago. Thirteen species were found, representing seven families and 12 genera (Xestoleberis, Loxoconcha, Callistocythere, Leptocythere, Dameriacella, Aurila, Heliocythere, Pachycaudites, Neonesidea, Cyamocytheridea, ?Quadracythere and Paracypris). Among the identified species, one new species, Leptocythere azorica n. sp., is described. Loxoconcha (two species) was the most diversified genus. The collected species are mainly ornamented and typical of warm waters and epi-neritic habitats (~ 10–50 m of depth). 相似文献

The role of carabid beetles in reducing populations of phytophagous insects has been an elusive subject. A field experiment was established on a commercial wheat crop (cv. Otto) with an area of 4.5 ha in Valdivia, Chile, during the spring and summer of 1996-1997. The field had been under a prairie system for two years, before wheat sowing (fertilization and a pesticide had been applied during crop development). Samples were taken at approximately monthly intervals. Carabid beetles were sampled with a grid of pitfall traps and other insects were sampled with a vacuum insect net and soil cores. The genera of the carabids found are of neotropical origin. Exclusion by polythene barriers, together with removal of carabid beetles using traps, was an effective technique for controlling carabid populations in a commercial wheat crop. A reduction in the number of carabid beetles was associated with an increase in the number of springtails and arachnids, and a decrease of agromyzid adults. Phytophagous insects, such as homopterans and lepidopterous larvae, were not affected by carabid exclusion and removal. The action of carabid beetles on the arthropod fauna can be extremely complex, due to its predatory activity at multitrophic levels. 相似文献

ABSTRACTElasmobranchs are a vulnerable resource, more susceptible to overfishing than most teleosts, and their assessment is complicated due to a general lack of information about their fisheries, biology and ecology. This study aimed to analyse all fishery and survey data available for elasmobranchs caught over the past c. 25 years around the Azores (NE Atlantic) to provide a baseline information, which can be used to inform stock assessment and management strategies. Elasmobranch species covered pelagic, benthopelagic and demersal habitats, from shallow to deep-water strata in areas around the islands and seamounts. These species are taken accidentally as by-catch of three main fisheries: swordfish fishery, black scabbardfish fishery and demersal bottom longline fishery. The latter represents one of the most important fishing activities in the Azores, and frequent elasmobranch by-catches include Raja clavata, Galeorhinus galeus, Deania calcea, D. profundorum, Etmopterus pusillus and E. spinax. A slight reduction in the abundance indices of these species was observed, despite the implemented technical measures (e.g. minimum size, zero catch). Little is known about resource dynamics for the Azorean region and no analytical assessments have been conducted. This study highlights the vulnerability to overfishing of these resources and the urgent need to develop management strategies. 相似文献

Alternative environmentally friendly methods for pest control are in high demand because of the environmental impacts of pesticides. Notably, predator-released kairomone is a natural compound released by natural enemies, which mediates non-consumptive effects between natural enemies and prey. However, this novel pest control agent is underutilized relative to pesticides and natural enemies. Additionally, the effects of spraying predator kairomone on the number and diversity of arthropods in fields and whether this method is environmental-friendly are poorly understood. In the present study, a predator kairomone, rove beetle (Paederus fuscipes Curtis) abdominal gland secretion (AGS), was sprayed in rice fields to investigate whether AGS can suppress pest populations or will affect the fields’ arthropod communities. After AGS spraying, the abundance of arthropods decreased throughout the first 12-d period, including arthropod pests such as hemipterans (small brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus (Fallén), brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (Horváth), and leafhoppers), and lepidopterans (rice leaf folder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenée). The abundance of arthropod predators was not affected, except for predatory spiders, which decreased, and rove beetles (P. fuscipes), which increased. In the terms of arthropod diversity, neither pests nor their natural enemies were changed by AGS application. This work highlights that predator kairomone can temporarily suppress pest populations in fields but has no adverse effects on arthropod diversity; thus, this approach is environmentally friendly and can be used in real-world applications. Broadly, present studies suggest that the application of predator kairomone may have synergistic or cumulative effects on pest suppression. 相似文献

The effects of arable field margin management on the abundance and species richness of Araneae (spiders) 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The effects of ten different management regimes on the abundance and species richness of Araneae on pre-existing and newly expanded zones of field margins surrounding arable fields are compared in a large-scale experiment conducted between 1987 and 1991. Most of the management regimes involved varying the Liming and frequency with which the field margins were cut. There was no evidence of consistent temporal trends in the abundance and species richness of Araneae on either the existing or expanded zones of the field margins during the first four years of the experiment. However, lowest numbers were recorded before expansion of the margins in 1987, and highest numbers in the final sample, in 1991. Araneae remained less abundant, and less species rich, on the newly expanded than on the existing zones of the field margins four years after they were set-aside'. Culling reduced both abundance and species richness. Regimes which included culling in mid-summer had a greater impact which persisted for longer than did those involving cutting in spring and autumn. Removal of cut material was associated with lower species richness than leaving it in situ. Sowing the margins with a wild flower seed mixture was associated with increased abundance and species richness of Araneae. Annual spraying with a broad-spectrum, non-persistent herbicide reduced the abundance of Araneae but the effect was not detectable until several months after the application of the spray. Both the species richness and abundance of Araneae were positively correlated with a measure of vegetation height made on the field margins in September, on both the pre-existing and newly expanded zones of the margins. The extent to which management practices which benefit Araneae are compatible with both the management requirements for various other taxa. and the overriding constraint of effective pernicious weed control on field margins, is discussed. 相似文献

The Azorean representatives of the Leptaxini (Pulmonata) are single island endemics, where a high-spired shell distinguishes the monotypic genus Helixena from two slightly different low-spired forms within Leptaxis (azorica and caldeirarum type). We studied the evolutionary history of putative taxa and the three shell-types using 12 allozyme loci and sequences of nuclear (ITS-1 and ITS-2) and mitochondrial DNA (COI and 16S rRNA). While little variation was found in both ITS genes, allozyme and mtDNA divergence was among the highest reported for pulmonate land snails. Generally, phylogeographic patterns are indicative of allopatric differentiation via the successive colonization of (younger) islands, while a major role for adaptive evolution is not supported. The azorica shell-type is monophyletic and has no common history with other sympatric shell-types on the same islands. The (ambiguous) position of Helixena sanctaemariae makes Leptaxis paraphyletic on the Azores and possibly also the caldeirarum shell-type. Helixena can therefore not be distinguished as a separate genus on the Azores. Following a lineage-based concept, representatives on all (ancient) islands should be considered distinct species. 相似文献

Species richness and patterns of abundance result from the interplay between niche differences, realized as intraspecific
density dependence (IDD), and so-called neutral processes that arise when species fitnesses are similar. This paper presents
an extension of neutral models that incorporates delays in IDD that could result from resource-mediated competition or through
a pathogen pool. These delays reduce standing species richness and qualitatively change the shape of species abundance distributions
and render them consistent with the hollow curve shape even in the presence of strong IDD. 相似文献

Baleen whales and Adelie penguins in the near-shore waters around the Antarctic Peninsula forage principally on Antarctic
krill. Given the spatial overlap in the distribution of these krill predators (particularly humpback whales) and their dependence
on krill, the goals of this paper are to determine if the inter-annual community structure and relative abundance of baleen
whales around Anvers Island is related to krill demography and abundance, and if the potential exists for inter-specific interactions
between Adelie penguins and baleen. We use whale sightings and prey data from both net tows and Adelie penguin stomach samples
to correlate the abundance of humpback whales with krill demography and abundance from 1993 to 2001. We find significant relationships
between whale abundance and the size–frequency distribution of krill targeted by Adelie penguins, as well as the foraging
success of Adelie penguins. These findings suggest both krill predators share common prey preferences in the upper portions
of the water column around Anvers Island. These findings highlight the need for better knowledge of baleen whale foraging
ecology and inter-specific interactions with penguins, as sea ice and krill populations around the Antarctic Peninsula are
affected by rapid changes in climate. 相似文献

Carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in coniferous plantations in Hokkaido,Japan: effects of tree species and environmental factors 下载免费PDF全文
The distribution, species composition and abundance of carabid beetles in monospecific plantations of three different coniferous tree species (Japanese spruce, Sakhalin fir and larch) were investigated by baited pitfall traps in Hokkaido, Japan. In total, 16 150 carabid beetles consisting of 31 species in 13 genera were collected in 2011 and 2012. The most predominant species was Pterostichus thunbergii Morawitz, followed by Synuchus melantho (Bates) and Carabus opaculus (Putzeys). Average numbers of beetles per trap were significantly reduced in larch. Large‐sized Carabus species (C. arboreus arboreus Lewis and C. opaculus) were collected in large numbers in Japanese spruce. There was no significant difference in diversity and equitability among the three kinds of plantation. The ordination of redundancy analysis showed that medium‐sized forest generalists, Pterosticus subovatus (Motschulsky) and P. thunbergii, were highly associated with Japanese spruce and Sakhalin fir, and the forest specialist Synuchus nitidus (Motschulsky) was with Sakhalin fir. In contrast, in larch there was no such associated forest species, and some species of Carabus, Pterostichus and Synuchus were considerably reduced in number, suggesting that larch has unfavorable effects on some forest species. The most important environmental variables influencing carabid assemblages were soil moisture and foliage layer cover. Practices in forest management to minimize the effects of plantations on carabid assemblages are discussed. 相似文献

Vegetation mapping and nature conservation: a case study in Terceira Island (Azores) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In order to emphasize the importance of vegetation mapping for nature conservation purposes a case study in Terceira island (Azores) is presented, in which the importance of the natural vegetation of the eastern slope of Santa Bárbara volcano (which is part of the Site of Community Importance of Santa Bárbara–Pico Alto) is evaluated through the elaboration of its vegetation map. Fourteen (14) different natural vegetation types were identified: grasslands (1 type), peat bogs (2 types), scrubs (2), forests (5), successional vegetation (3) and vegetation of rocky slopes (1). All communities are protected under the Habitat and Species Directive (EC/92/43) and most of them are endemic to the Azores Islands. This fact, together with the significant number of Azorean endemic taxa (18), Macaronesian endemic taxa (5) and species protected under the Habitat and Species Directive (7), gives this area an important conservation value that justifies future protection actions. Vegetation mapping is an important tool for the characterization, evaluation and implementation of managing plans of natural areas of the Azores islands. The use of a floristic-based classification, supported by multivariate analysis and structural data, is an efficient methodology for the construction of these maps. The data collected comprise an important set of information about the distribution and abundance of natural vegetation types and endemic and rare species. This information was not available until now and is indispensable for the elaboration of management plans of Special Zones for Conservation that will be part of the NATURA 2000 network. 相似文献

The cytology of wild hybrids ofDryopteris from Pico, Azores has been examined. This has confirmed the parentage of the hybrids, and provided evidence to support the view that the tetraploid speciesD. crispifolia has evolved in the Azores from two diploid species,D. aemula andD. azorica, by hybridization and polyploidy. 相似文献

The influence of matrix and edges on species richness patterns of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in habitat islands 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

Aim The aim of this study was to analyse whether, and how, the inclusion of habitat specialists and edge‐preferring species modifies the species–area relationship predictions of the island biogeography theory for an insect group (ground beetles, Coloptera: Carabidae) living in natural fragments. Species–habitat island area relationships applied to terrestrial habitat islands can be distorted by the indiscriminate inclusion of all species occurring in the fragments. Matrices surrounding terrestrial habitat fragments can provide colonists that do not necessarily distinguish the fragment from the matrix and can survive and reproduce there. Edge‐preferring species can further distort the expected relationship, as smaller fragments have larger edge:core ratios. Location Nineteen forest fragments were studied in the Bereg Plain, Hungary, and SW Ukraine. This area contains natural forest patches, mainly of oak and hornbeam, and supports a mountain entomofauna. Methods Ground beetles (Carabidae) present in the 19 forest patches were categorized into generalists, forest specialists and edge‐preferring species. We analysed the relationship between species richness and fragment area using species richness in the different categories. Results The assemblages contained a high share of generalist species (species that occur also in the surrounding matrix). Forest patch size and the number of generalist species showed a marginally significant negative relationship, indicating that generalist species were more important in smaller patches. Forest specialist species richness was correlated positively with patch area. Edge‐preferring species were shown to influence the species–area relationship: the number of edge‐preferring species increased with the edge:area ratio. Main conclusions Both generalist and edge‐preferring species can considerably distort the species–area relationship. Island biogeography theory can be applied to habitat islands only if the habitat islands are defined correctly from the viewpoint of the target species. 相似文献

Aim To investigate the distribution of Australian species of Sauropus. The information obtained is used to (1) identify areas of highest richness and centres of endemism, (2) investigate latitudinal gradients of richness and range size, (3) determine the types of rarity shown, and (4) provide hypotheses on historical biogeography of the genus within Australia. Location Australia. Methods Specimens from 17 herbaria and field searches were examined and label and field information collated on distribution, habit and habitat. Distribution information was used to map all species within 784 grid cells of 1° × 1° and within the 97 Australian ‘ecological regions’. Morphometric cluster analysis of species was conducted using Kulczynski association and flexible UPGMA on 23 character states. Simple regression was used to correlate species richness, density and range size to changes in latitude. CLIMEX is used to match the climate of the region of highest richness in Australia with other areas of the world. Results Species richness was highest within the tropical north of Australia, and most species were associated with tropical savanna woodlands. Two areas were identified as centres of endemism and these corresponded closely to areas of high species richness. Four morphological groups were identified. One species (Sauropus trachyspermus) was found to be widespread, however all other species had small geographical ranges. Species richness and range size were significantly correlated with changes in latitude. Ten species were found to be of the rarest type, warranting conservation initiatives. Main conclusions Two regions of high richness and endemism of Sauropus occur, Thailand and Australia. Within Australia, the Kakadu‐Alligator River and the Cairns‐Townsville areas were identified as centres of endemism and high species richness for Sauropus. Australian Sauropus in general occur in similar communities and climates as other members of the genus elsewhere. Ten of the 27 species of Australian endemic Sauropus are extremely rare and warrant conservation initiatives. Correlations of latitude to species richness are potentially due to Sauropus radiating from the climatically stable top end of Australia. Increasing range size in more southern latitudes may also be due to stability of climates in the top end or because there is more available land area at these latitudes. Sauropus micranthus, the only non‐endemic species, is probably a more recent invader from the Tertiary period when tropical rain forests where more extensive and congruent with those of New Guinea. 相似文献

A taxonomic survey on fungus-growing ants (Attini) was made at 14 beaches on Santa Catarina Island (SC), Brazil. The samplings were manual, in soil or litterfall, in the following habitats: sandy beach, herbaceous vegetation and shrubby vegetation. From 12 species of Attini (ten of Acromyrmex Mayr and two of Cyphomyrmex Mayr), the most frequent were Cyphomyrmex morschi Emery and Acromyrmex crassispinus Forel, collected, respectively, on eight and ten of the monitored beaches. Altogether, Sorensen's similarity coefficients were high (range: 0.59-0.80), in spite of the lower numbers of ant species on sandy beaches. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Membracid species richness declines with increasing latitude in the Western hemisphere but begins to increase again in temperate regions. In northern latitudes this transition occurs in the highlands of Mexico and is the result of the emergence of a new tribe and greater host specialization.
2. The relationship between number of species per genus and latitude is parabolic.
3. We suggest the low number of species per genus in tropical regions may be due to the lack of host specialization and reduced coordination of life history with host phenology. 相似文献
