Trichogramma species have been successfully utilized for biocontrol of several lepidopteran pests worldwide. The development, survival and progeny production of two Kenyan species' Trichogramma bournieri Pintureau & Babault and Trichogramma sp. nr. mwanzai Schulten & Feijen (collected from Kenya), Trichogramma evanescens Westwood (Germany) and Trichogramma chilonis Ishii (India) was studied at four constant temperatures (13, 18, 25 and 34°C) with the 011 aim of assessing the relative biotic potential of the two native species for 011 biocontrol of Helicoverpa armigera and Plutella xylostella in Kenya. The study was conducted at the Institute 011 for Biological Control (BBA), Darmstadt, Germany. The Trichogramma species tested showed variations 011 in fertility, developmental time, percent emergence, progeny production and sex ratio 011 at the four temperature regimes. Fertility decreased as temperature increased from 25 to 34°C. 011 T. chilonis and T. evanescens completed development at all temperatures tested, but T. 011 bournieri and T. sp. nr. mwanzai failed to complete development at 13°C. The developmental 011 period for all the species decreased as the temperature increased. The duration of development from 011 oviposition to adult emergence varied from 8 days to 12 weeks shorter at 34°C than at 011 13°C for T. chilonis and T. evanescens . For the various temperatures tested, a linear model was 011 satisfactory for egg to adult development at P = 0.05 for T. chilonis and T. evanescens . The 011 lower temperature thresholds for development and duration in degree-days were 8.83°C and 188 for 011 T. chilonis and 9.23°C and 192 for T. evanescens , respectively. For all temperatures tested, 011 T. sp. nr. mwanzai had the highest preimaginal survivorship. Adult emergence was lower at 13°C and 34°C than at 011 18 and 25°C. The highest fertility (mean ±SE) (50.37 ±2.32 adult 011 female -1 ) and progeny production (44.03 ±2.02 adult female -1 ) was recorded at 25°C for 011 T. evanescens . Sex ratio was biased towards female at all temperatures in T. bournieri and T. chilonis . 011 At all temperatures tested, T . sp. nr. mwanzai produced more males than females. For all species tested, 011 favourable parasitism was between 18 and 25°C. The results from this study will be useful for mass rearing purposes as well as for future field release programmes.

The occurrence of sub-optimal temperatures during development of immature parasitoids can have important consequences on adult fitness. We investigated the impact of different regimes of low temperature on emergence, differential mortality, longevity and fecundity in Trichogramma brassicae Bezdenko (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). The host-feeding behaviour of adult females was also measured as an indicator of energy reserve at emergence. Acclimation of 30 days at 10 °C or 24 days at 13 °C allowed T. brassicae immatures to develop with a lower mortality than those exposed directly at 5 °C. Longevity and fecundity of females decreased at a lower rate with acclimation at 10 °C suggesting that acclimation at 13 °C may have depleted the energy reserves of individuals more than acclimation at 10 °C. Short photoperiod exposure during the maternal generation had no effect on progeny’s fitness. We found no difference among the treatments in females’ host-feeding behaviours, in differential mortality at emergence, in female’s mobility and in F1 sex ratio.

The successful use of Trichogramma as biocontrol agent depends on its mass production in laboratory, a fundamental step for any biological control program among other factors. This work investigated the parasitism capacity of Trichogramma pratissolii Querino & Zuchi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), a new recorded Trichogramma species, parasitizing eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) and Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) under the temperatures of 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 and 33 degree Celsius. Eggs of these hosts were offered to newly emerged females during 24h. This procedure was repeated daily for each female and each temperature up to female death, in order to estimate daily and accumulated parasitism, and female longevity. On both hosts, the daily parasitism decreased as function of the female age. Under all temperatures studied and both hosts the highest rate of parasitism was observed during the first 24h of host exposure, and reached 80% of total parasitism in the 4th and 3rd days when parasitizing A. kuehniella and C. cephalonica, respectively. On both hosts, the highest parasitism rate was observed under temperatures from 21 degree Celsius to 27 degree Celsius. Average longevities of T. pratissolii females deprived of food emerging from A. kuehniella and C. cephalonica lived for 1.0 and 8.9 days when reared at 15 degree Celsius e 33 degree Celsius, respectively. The results indicate that eggs of A. kuehniella and C. cephalonica and temperatures from 21 degree Celsius to 27 degree Celsius were appropriate to rear T. pratissolii.

A rapid cold hardening response was studied in females and males of the olive fruit fly Bactrocera (Dacus) oleae. When laboratory-reared females and males were transferred and maintained from the rearing temperature of 24 °C for 2 h to –6.5 °C approximately 5% survived. However, conditioning of both females and males for 2 h at various temperatures from 0 to 10 °C before their exposure for 2 h to –6.5 °C increased survival to 80 to 92%. A similar rapid cold hardening response in both females and males was also induced through gradual cooling of the flies at a rate of approximately 0.4 °C per min. The rapid increase in cold tolerance after prior conditioning of the flies to low temperatures, was rapidly lost when they returned to a higher temperature of 24 °C. In the field, in late February and early March, females and males were capable of a rapid cold hardening response. After exposure to the critical temperature they suffered a high mortality when tested in the afternoon and low mortality early in the morning on consecutive days, probably because of differences in the prevailing field temperatures a few hours before testing. This plasticity of cold tolerance gained through rapid cold hardening may allow the flies to survive during periods of the year with great fluctuation in circadian temperatures.

Trichogramma principium Sug. & Sor. females were sequentially offered two portions of the grain moth (Sitotroga cerealella Oliv.) eggs, either young (1-day old) or old (eggs that had developed 6 days at a temperature of 20 °C). The probability of host acceptance depended not only on current host age, but also on the age of the previously offered host. Particularly, Trichogramma females more often oviposited in old host eggs when previously offered young eggs (35–45% of Trichogramma females laid eggs) compared to females which were sequentially offered two portions of old eggs (15–20% of Trichogramma females laid eggs). In other words, parasitization by Trichogramma was stable even when transferred from young (preferred) to old (usually rejected) eggs. Dissections showed that refusing females had significantly more mature eggs than ovipositing females, independent of host age. Among ovipositing females, wasps provided with young hosts had fewer mature ovarial eggs than wasps provided with old hosts. Supposedly, Trichogramma females offered old hosts require a higher motivation to oviposit and have a correspondingly higher egg load than females offered young (preferred) hosts.

In order to identify suitable Trichogramma strains for mass production and successful control of key lepidopteran pests in paddy fields in the Greater Mekong Subregion, the effects of high temperatures on wasp life history traits were compared among three strains of Trichogramma chilonis Ishii and two strains of Trichogramma ostriniae Pang et Chen, collected from paddy fields in the region. At a rearing temperature of 25 °C, life history traits differed significantly among the five strains tested and the three T. chilonis strains and a T. ostriniae strain were of high performance. When female wasps were exposed to higher temperatures commonly encountered in the region, negative effects were observed on key life history parameters of adult females and their offspring at 34 °C, which became even more serious at 37 °C. In particular, the two T. ostriniae strains were not able to successfully develop to adulthood at all at 37 °C while for the T. chilonis strains adult emergence was significantly reduced. In addition, the emerged offspring females lived only around one day and no parasitism was observed. When the three T. chilonis strains were exposed to 37 °C for 4 to 12 h at prepupal and pupal stages, reflecting heat shocks that the released Trichogramma may experience in the field, adult emergence was significantly reduced after an exposure time of 12 h. In summary, the three T. chilonis strains show a relatively high potential for incorporation in a biological control program in the target region. Our results also highlight that tests at both rearing and field temperatures are necessary in selection of potential Trichogramma strains for an inundative release program where there is significant difference between rearing and field temperatures.

The influence of carbohydrate (honey) on host acceptance and egg retention was studied in adult Trichogramma principium . The presence of honey reduced the percentage of ovipositing females and the mean number of eggs laid during 2 days. Consequently, in mass rearing, when Trichogramma is usually presented to factitious hosts for a short time, providing wasps with carbohydrate may decrease progeny production. The mean number of mature ovarial eggs in non-ovipositing females was much higher than in ovipositing females in both fed and starved wasps. The adaptive role of the positive correlation between food supply and egg retention in Trichogramma is discussed.

Tropical guppies, Poecilia reticulata, collected from the canal of La Laguna Los Patos were acclimated over a four-week period at local water temperatures of 24–33 °C to determine their critical thermal maxima (CTM) and death points (DP), as criteria of thermal tolerance. In addition, individual thermal tolerance times at a lethal temperature of 38.5 °C were measured over 12 days for upward acclimation from 24 to 30 °C and over 16 days for downward acclimation from 30 to 24 °C to determine acclimation rate just before and after changing the acclimation temperatures. The CTM ranged from 38.95 to 40.61 °C and the average DP varied from 41.22 to 42.86 °C. Positive relationships were apparent between thermal tolerance and acclimation temperatures, and thus heat tolerance criteria (CTM and DP) were significantly different among acclimation temperatures. Individual heat tolerance times increased most rapidly during the first 6 hours of upward acclimation after transfer from 24 to 30 °C, continued to increase another 5 days and fluctuated after initial acclimation was completed. The heat tolerance times of fish transferred from 30 to 24 °C declined steadily over times, reaching a minimum at 14–16 days after transfer.

We explored the adaptive significance of developmental plasticity in the tropical butterfly Bicyclus anynana using two experiments including temperature changes during ontogeny. In contrast to previous findings on adult acclimation, we could not find any evidence in support of adaptive developmental plasticity, as survival until adulthood was not enhanced when larval rearing temperatures matched the temperatures experienced during prepupal or pupal development. Extreme temperatures substantially reduced survival, supporting the ‘optimal developmental temperature’ hypothesis. Metamorphosis was more efficient at the higher rearing temperature of 27 °C, where egg hatching success was also higher, indicating that the lower temperature of 20 °C is already slightly stressful for this tropical butterfly.

The effects of acclimation temperature on insect thermal performance curves are generally poorly understood but significant for understanding responses to future climate variation and the evolution of these reaction norms. Here, in Acheta domesticus, we examine the physiological effects of 7-9 days acclimation to temperatures 4 °C above and below optimum growth temperature of 29 °C (i.e. 25, 29, 33 °C) for traits of resistance to thermal extremes, temperature-dependence of locomotion performance (jumping distance and running speed) and temperature-dependence of respiratory metabolism. We also examine the effects of acclimation on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) enzyme activity. Chill coma recovery time (CRRT) was significantly reduced from 38 to 13 min with acclimation at 33-25 °C, respectively. Heat knockdown resistance was less responsive than CCRT to acclimation, with no significant effects of acclimation detected for heat knockdown times (25 °C: 18.25, 29 °C: 18.07, 33 °C: 25.5 min). Thermal optima for running speed were higher (39.4-40.6 °C) than those for jumping performance (25.6-30.9 °C). Acclimation temperature affected jumping distance but not running speed (general linear model, p = 0.0075) although maximum performance (UMAX) and optimum temperature (TOPT) of the performance curves showed small or insignificant effects of acclimation temperature. However, these effects were sensitive to the method of analysis since analyses of TOPT, UMAX and the temperature breadth (TBR) derived from non-linear curve-fitting approaches produced high inter-individual variation within acclimation groups and reduced variation between acclimation groups. Standard metabolic rate (SMR) was positively related to body mass and test temperature. Acclimation temperature significantly influenced the slope of the SMR-temperature reaction norms, whereas no variation in the intercept was found. The CCO enzyme activity remained unaffected by thermal acclimation. Finally, high temperature acclimation resulted in significant increases in mortality (60-70% at 33 °C vs. 20-30% at 25 and 29 °C). These results suggest that although A. domesticus may be able to cope with low temperature extremes to some degree through phenotypic plasticity, population declines with warmer mean temperatures of only a few degrees are likely owing to the limited plasticity of their performance curves.

Understanding the capacity for different species to reduce their susceptibility to climate change via phenotypic plasticity is essential for accurately predicting species extinction risk. The climatic variability hypothesis suggests that spatial and temporal variation in climatic variables should select for more plastic phenotypes. However, empirical support for this hypothesis is limited. Here, we examine the capacity for ten Drosophila species to increase their critical thermal maxima (CTMAX) through developmental acclimation and/or adult heat hardening. Using four fluctuating developmental temperature regimes, ranging from 13 to 33 °C, we find that most species can increase their CTMAX via developmental acclimation and adult hardening, but found no relationship between climatic variables and absolute measures of plasticity. However, when plasticity was dissected across developmental temperatures, a positive association between plasticity and one measure of climatic variability (temperature seasonality) was found when development took place between 26 and 28 °C, whereas a negative relationship was found when development took place between 20 and 23 °C. In addition, a decline in CTMAX and egg‐to‐adult viability, a proxy for fitness, was observed in tropical species at the warmer developmental temperatures (26–28 °C); this suggests that tropical species may be at even greater risk from climate change than currently predicted. The combined effects of developmental acclimation and adult hardening on CTMAX were small, contributing to a <0.60 °C shift in CTMAX. Although small shifts in CTMAX may increase population persistence in the shorter term, the degree to which they can contribute to meaningful responses in the long term is unclear.

The phenotypic effects of rearing temperature on several fitness components of the koinobiont parasitoid, Aphidius colemani, were examined. Temperatures experienced during development induced a plastic linear response in the dry and fat masses of the immature stage and a non-linear response in the growth rate as well as in the size of adults. We investigated if the phenotypic morphometrical plasticity exhibited by parasitoids reared at different temperatures can induce variations in fitness-related traits in females. We did not find any difference in immature (pupal) mortality in accordance to rearing temperature. However, when examining adult longevity, we found an inverse linear relation with developmental temperature, confirming the usual rule that larger and fatter wasps live longer than smaller ones. The pattern of female fecundity was non-linear; wasps that developed at high and low temperatures were less productive. We suggest that when development is short, the accumulated reserves are not adequate to support both fecundity and survival. By manipulating adult size through changes in the rearing temperature, we showed that the usual shape of the size/fitness function is not always linear as expected. Developmental temperature induced a plasticity in energy reserves which affected the functional constraints between survival and reproduction.

Cold storage of Trichogramma ostriniae reared on Sitotroga cerealella eggs
Efficient storage of the biological controlagent Trichogramma ostriniae couldimprove current parasitoid production methodsby making the system more flexible andefficient. Initial studies compared emergencerates of T. ostriniae reared onSitotroga cerealella eggs held at 6 °C, 9 °C, 12 °C,15 °C, and 24 °C for up to 8 weeks after parasitism. At 15 °C, emergence occurred in <2 weeks.Emeregence was >80% for parasitized eggsstored at 9 °C and 12 °C for 4 and 6 weeksrespectively. Storage at 6 °C caused asignificant decline in emergence after 2 weeks. Subsequent trials focused on fitness of storedT. ostriniae. Percentage of emergedfemales parasitizing eggs, female longevity, and fecundity were quantified after storage. The percentage of females successfullyparasitizing O. nubilalis eggs wasgreatest for the 9 °C four-week treatment(100%). Compared to 24 °C controls, storage at12 °C for 6 weeks or at 9 °C for 8 weeks reduced thepercentage of females parasitizing. Longevityof females held in cold storage was generallyless than that of controls. Rates of parasitismby stored Trichogramma was generallysimilar to controls after 2 to 4 weeks' storageat 9 °C and 12 °C but declined with storage longerthan 4 weeks. Emergence of progeny of cold-storedfemales was lower than controls for alltreatments. The percentage of female progenyfrom cold stored females was comparable tocontrols up to 4 weeks of storage.

The development and parasitism of Diaphania hyalinata L. eggs by Trichogramma atopovirilia Oatman & Platner and its thermal requirements were studied at the temperatures of 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 and 33 degrees C. Thirty eggs of D. hyalinata were exposed to three females of T. atopovirilia for 5h at 25 degrees C and incubated at the different temperatures. The developmental time from egg exposure to adult, parasitism viability, number of adults per parasitized host egg and progeny sex ratio were monitored. The developmental time from egg to adult emergence of the parasitoid exhibited inverse relationship to the temperature, lasting 24.12 days at 18 degrees C and 7.36 days at 33 degrees C. Parasitism viability at 24, 27 and 30 degrees C was higher than 90%. The ratio of T. atapovirilia adult produced per egg and its sex ratio were not affected when using D. hialynata as host. The lowest threshold temperature (Tb) and estimated degree-days over Tb required by T. atopovirilia to develop on eggs of D. hyalinata was 11.99 degrees C and 130.42 masculine C, respectively. Considering the temperature regimes of two areas where cucurbitaces are cultivated in Bahia State (Rio Real and Inhambupe County) it was estimated that T. atopovirilia can achieve more than 32 generation per year. The results suggest that T. atopovirilia has potential to control D. hyalinata eggs with better chance of success under temperature regimes ranging from 24 to 27 degrees C that meets the suitable field conditions for cropping cucurbitaces.

The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata is a new, invasive pest of Platanus trees in China. Although C. ciliata is often subjected to acute low temperatures in early winter and spring in northern and eastern China, the cold tolerance of C. ciliata has not been well studied. The objectives of this study were to determine whether adults of C. ciliata are capable of rapid cold hardening (RCH), and to compare the benefits of RCH vs. cold acclimation (ACC) in the laboratory. When the adult females incubated at 26 °C were transferred directly to the discriminating temperature (−12 °C) for 2 h, survival was only 22%. However, exposure to 0 °C for 4 h before transfer to −12 °C for 2 h induced RCH, i.e., increased survival to 68%. RCH could also be induced by gradual cooling of the insects at rates between 0.1 and 0.25 °C min−1. The protection against cold shock obtained through RCH at 0 °C for 4 h was lost within 1 h if the adults were returned to 26 °C before exposure to −12 °C. Survival at both −12 and −5 °C was greater for RCH-treated than for ACC-treated adults (for ACC, adults were kept at 15 °C for 5 days), and the lethal temperature (2 h exposure) was lower for RCH-treated than for ACC-treated adults. The results suggest that RCH may help C. ciliata survive the acute low temperatures that often occur in early winter and early spring in northern and eastern China.

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, is a worldwide pest species that overwinters as diapausing females. Cold hardening is presumed to start during diapause development to ensure the successful overwintering of this species. To address this hypothesis, we compared cold tolerance between non-diapausing and diapausing females. We measured supercooling point (SCP) and survival to acute cold stress by exposing the mites at a range of sub-zero temperatures (from −4 to −28 °C for 2 h). The mean SCPs of non-diapausing and diapausing females were −19.6±0.5 and −24.7±0.3 °C respectively, and freezing killed the mites. Diapausing females were significantly more cold tolerant than non-diapausing ones, with LT50 of −19.7 and −13.3 °C, respectively. Further, we also examined the effects of cold acclimation (10 d at 0 or 5 °C) in non-diapausing and diapausing females. Our findings indicated that diapause decreased SCP significantly, while cold acclimation had no effect on the SCP except for non-diapausing females that were acclimated at 5 °C. Acclimation at 5 °C enhanced survival to acute cold stress in diapausing and non-diapausing females, with LT50 of −22.0 and −17.1 °C, respectively. Altogether, our results indicate that T. urticae is a chill tolerant species, and that diapause and cold acclimation elevate cold hardiness in this species.

Sclerodermus pupariae Yang et Yao (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) is used as a potential biocontrol agent for several buprestid and cerambycid larvae. This study aimed to enhance the efficiency of mass‐rearing of this parasitoid by investigating the fitness gain of this bethylid wasp, including the proportion of successful parasitism and development, brood size, sex ratio, proportion of winged female offspring, body size and longevity of female offspring, under eight different maternal parasitoid density treatments using Thyestilla gebleri Faldermann as host in the laboratory. The results indicated that the foundress densities did not affect the parasitism or emergence rate of this parasitoid. Brood size of the parasitoids increased significantly when the number of maternal wasps ranged from one to four. However, further increases in foundress number did not affect the parasitoid brood size. The sex ratios of S. pupariae were always female‐biased. The proportions of male in the progeny colonies were <10% throughout all experimental treatments. The percentage of winged female progeny was not significantly influenced by the density of adult maternal parasitoids. Body sizes of parasitoids significantly declined with increasing maternal parasitoid densities. Although the parasitoid body size reduced when maternal wasp number was higher, it could be compromised by the relatively higher number of female offspring produced. Further, more than 70% of the parasitoids remained alive when they were stored at 12°C for four months throughout the experiments. These findings suggest that exposure of four female wasps to a single host larva would result in the highest fitness of S. pupariae. Our findings might provide a new approach to enhance the efficiency of mass‐rearing of this bethylid wasp.

The role of temperature in the induction of diapause in Trichogramma cordubensis (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), under controlled laboratory conditions, was investigated using Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs as hosts. Results indicate that prestorage temperatures and the duration of exposure of the parasitoids to these temperatures affected the induction of diapause. It was possible to induce diapause in prepupae of T. cordubensis by exposing the preimaginal stages (prior to the prepupal stage) to 10°C for at least 30 days, but adults emerged without diapause when the duration of exposure was of only 10 or 20 days. Parasitoids failed to enter diapause when prestorage temperatures were 7 or 12°C, regardless of the duration of exposure. However, at these two temperatures, preimaginal development of T. cordubensis was delayed, allowing short-term storage (40 days at induction temperatures followed by 30 days at 3°C) by keeping parasitoids in quiescence without reducing the percentages of adult emergence. Good percentages of adult emergence after long-term low-temperature storage (30 or 40 days at 10°C followed by six months at 3°C) occurred only when T. cordubensis was in diapause. The long-term storage of parasitoids in diapause allows an enlargement in the mass rearing potentialities of this species for future biological control releases by allowing producers to stockpile the parasitoids for release in the field season.
