Sediment cores were collected from nine wetland lakes in Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt for the CASSARINA project investigating environmental change in Northern African wetlands. The cores were dated radiometrically by using natural (210Pb) and artificial (137Cs and 241Am) radionuclides. At sites in Morocco and Tunisia with mean annual rainfall totals ranging from 500–1000 mm yr–1, fallout records were generally satisfactory and it was possible to develop independent sediment chronologies based on the radiometric data alone. At the Egyptian sites, rainfall was less than 200 mm yr–1 and fallout records were much less distinct. At these sites the radiometric data could only be used to give an indication of mean sedimentation rates during the past 30–40 years. By using a combination of fallout radionuclide, pollen, and macrofossil stratigraphic records it was however possible to determine a credible sediment chronology spanning the major part of the 20th century. Applying this chronology to records of spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCP) from the same sediment cores, the onset of significant levels of atmospheric pollution in the Nile Delta is dated in all three cores to the mid 1950s. Results from a number of lakes (Sidi Bou Rhaba, Ichkeul and Korba) revealed high and accelerating siltation rates, threatening their continued existence beyond the next few decades. In contrast, sedimentation rates at all three Nile Delta sites appear to have declined in recent decades, most probably due to the impact of the Nile barrages.  相似文献

Although catchments have been implicated as an important source of metals to lakes, the catchment contribution of different metals is poorly known, and the anthropogenic contribution is not known at all. We determine the anthropogenic lake sediment burdens of Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Pb for several Quebec and Ontario lakes, not subject to point source loading, to obtain estimates of atmospheric loading and inputs from terrestrial sources. To do this, we first collected multiple cores across 11 lake basins to estimate the whole-lake Pb burdens. As the whole-lake Pb burdens did not differ among lakes that spanned over two orders of magnitude in drainage ratios (drainage basin area/lake area), we conclude that catchment retention of anthropogenic Pb is complete. The anthropogenic Pb burdens were then used as a correction for focusing for the other metals. Among the metals, Cr and Ni were the most readily exported from drainage basins, followed by Cu. Zn showed no increase with drainage ratio, indicating Zn to be effectively retained by catchments. The export coefficients of the Pb corrected metals correlate well with ocean residence time, revealing a similar metal sorption/precipitation sequence in both soils and oceans. Sediment metal burdens provide a relatively easy way to obtain not only metal export coefficients from drainage basins, but also the atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic metals (e.g. Pb: S.E. Quebec, 950 mg*m–2: Laurentians, north of Montreal, 420 mg*m–2). The export coefficients are not only simpler to obtain than by mass balance measurements, but, in addition, identify the anthropogenic component.  相似文献

Depth distributions and inventories of137Cs (mCi km2) were determined in sediment from several fresh water lakes in the New York State Adirondack Preserve. Included were Big Moose and Darts Lakes, part of the North Branch of the Moose River system, as well as North, Sagamore, South, and Woods Lakes and the seepage pond, Tamarack Lake. Comparisons were made between the137Cs inventories in these lakes and large inpoundments in the Adirondacks (Hinkley, Great Sacandaga, Stillwater and Cranberry Lake Reservoirs) and other large impoundments and lakes located in various regions of the U.S., especially Cayuga Lake, Ithaca, NY.None of the Adirondack Lakes had137Cs distributions with depth in sediment that closely resembled the deposition pattern of weapons testing as a function of time. All of the natural lakes and small impoundments, including the seepage pond, were found to have significantly lower inventories of137Cs than expected; while the large reservoirs were generally enhanced in137Cs. We suggest that more than one mechanism may be responsible for the low sediment inventories: for the majority of lakes, flushing of137Cs out of the lakes during periods of thermal stratification and ice thaw; and for the seepage pond, remobilization of137Cs into the water column due to biological recycling.  相似文献

The deposition of radiocaesium from nuclear weapons testing and the Chernobyl accident upon the Llyn Llygad Rheidol catchment in mid-Wales is described. Inventories of soil cores from the catchment support estimates of total atmospheric fallout. The mean inventory of weapons testing 137Cs in lake sediment cores is broadly similar to that in soil cores. The inventory of Chernobyl fallout in sediment cores is significantly lower and raises questions concerning the residence time of 137Cs in the catchment soils and lake waters. 137Cs and 241Am activities in a sediment core record the 1963 peak of fallout from nuclear weapons testing. The association of the peak activities of 137Cs and 241Am in the sediments with the falloot maximum is confirmed by 210Pb dating. The 210Pb dates also reveal a significant increase in sediment accumulation rates over the past 20 years.  相似文献

Radiometric dating for recent lake sediments on the Tibetan Plateau   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We present radiometric data from nine lakes across the Tibetan Plateau, and compare their reliability in relation to recent research. Unsupported 210Pb profiles show, except for one particular lake, non-exponential decline of 210Pb activity with sediment depth. Stratigraphic dates based on global atmospheric nuclear weapons maximum fallout of 137Cs (1963) support the use of the constant rate of 210Pb supply (CRS) model in four of the dated cores. The discrepancy in the others is likely due to recent increased input of catchment-derived 210Pb. 210Pb dates in this study suggest that post depositional diffusion of 137Cs activity has been significant. The practice of assigning early 1950s dates (start of global atmospheric thermonuclear testing) to lake sediment sequences on the Tibetan Plateau should be used with caution. 137Cs profiles from Tibetan lake sediment cores and their geographical distribution suggest that 137Cs derived from the 1986 Chernobyl accident or atmospheric testing in China was not sufficient to form a significant peak effective for dating.  相似文献

To determine recent sediment movement, we measured the levels of 137Cs (an artificial radionuclide produced during nuclear weapons testing) of 118 southern Lake Michigan samples and 27 in Green Bay. These samples, taken from 286 grab samples of the upper 3 cm of sediment, were collected in 1975 as part of a systematic study of Lake Michigan sediment. 137Cs levels correlated well with concentrations of organic carbon, lead, and other anthropogenic trace metals in the sediment. 137Cs had a higher correlation with silt-sized than with clay-sized sediment (0.55 and 0.46, respectively). Atmospherically derived 137Cs and trace metals are being redistributed by sedimentary processes in Lake Michigan after being incorporated in suspended sediment. We determined a distribution pattern of 137Cs that represents areas of southern Lake Michigan where sediment deposition is occurring.  相似文献

Surface sediments and sediment cores were collected from coastal lagoons and lakes located in the Southern Mediterranean Region (SMR) as part of the MELMARINA Project which involved integrated eco-hydrological monitoring and modelling. This study uses surface sediments and sediment cores to infer spatial characteristics and temporal changes at the MELMARINA primary sites, Merja Zerga in Morocco, Ghar El Melh in Tunisia and Lake Manzala in Egypt. In addition, surface sediment sampling was undertaken at Egyptian Lake Bardawil and sediment cores were collected from the Lagune de Nador (Morocco). Sediment distribution patterns are investigated using GIS with georeferenced sample locations to facilitate display and resurvey. Major variations in sedimentary organic matter and, particularly, carbonate content, occur within and between sites. Local landscapes combined with hydrological and biogeochemical processes influence the distributions of sediment bulk components (carbonates, organic material and clastic matter) and molluscan shells and shell debris are an important source of sedimentary carbonate at all three primary sites. Sediment cores were dated using natural (210Pb) and artificial (137Cs) radionuclides, and sediment accumulation rate changes indicate that sources of sediment supply varied markedly through the twentieth century but have generally diminished after the mid-1960s. Sedimentary siliceous microfossils (diatoms) were generally poorly preserved, but mollusc shell remains were well represented. Sediment chronologies and sediment bulk composition allow discussion of some recent changes in bulk, minerogenic and biogenic sediment accumulation patterns in the SMR lagoons. Sediment accumulation rates also varied between sites and multiple cores from Lake Manzala indicated that rates showed considerable spatial variability. Low-level sediment contamination by fossil fuel combustion particulates and trace metals was demonstrated for Ghar El Melh and Lagune de Nador where Pb and Zn accumulation rates were highest in twentieth century sediment. It is emphasized that sediment quality and quantity have strong influences on lagoon ecosystem function and sedimentation is relevant to hydromorphology and to concepts of ecological quality. Sediment cores from nine lakes in southern Norway (N) and six in northern New England (NE) were dated by 137Cs, 210Pb and in NE also by pollen, and were analyzed geochemically and for diatoms. Cores from two N and three NE lakes were analyzed for cladocerans. 137Cs dating is unreliable in these lakes, probably due to mobility of Cs in the sediment. In Holmvatn sediment, an up-core increase in Fe, starting ca. 1900, correlates with geochemical indications of decreasing mechanical erosion of soils. Diatoms indicate a lake acidification starting in the 1920's. We propose that soil Fe was mobilized and runoff acidified by acidic precipitation and/or by soil acidification resulting from vegetational succession following reduced grazing. Even minor land use changes or disturbances in lake watersheds introduce ambiguity to the sedimentary evidence relating to atmospheric influences. Diatom counts from surface sediments in 36 N and 31 NE lakes were regressed against contemporary water pH to obtain coefficients for computing past pH from subsurface counts. Computed decreases of 0.3–0.8 pH units start between I890 and I930 in N lakes already acidic (pH 5.0–5.5) before the decrease. These and lesser decreases in other lakes start decades to over a century after the first sedimentary indications of atmospheric heavy metal pollution. It is proposed that the acidification of precipitation accompanied the metal pollution. The delays in lake acidification may be due to buffering by the lakes and watersheds. The magnitude of acidification and heavy metal loading of the lakes parallels air pollution gradients. Shift in cladoceran remains are contemporary with acidification, preceding elimination of fishes.  相似文献

To evaluate the contribution of the long-range transport of heavy metals from the Asian continent to the enrichment of surface sediments in western Japan, heavy-metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn) concentrations were measured in sediment cores collected at three sites each in Lakes Shinji and Nakaumi. Sedimentation fluxes of these metals were calculated on the basis of their concentrations in excess of their background concentrations. Pb showed similar sedimentation fluxes in the sites, suggesting a predominant contribution of atmospheric deposition of Pb transported from the Asian continent to the input to the lakes. In contrast, the sedimentation fluxes of heavy metals other than Pb in the surface sediments were markedly high near the estuary of a principal river flowing into Lake Nakaumi. A highly positive correlation was observed between the Cd and Zn concentrations in the cores at each site (r 2 = 0.84–0.97). The Cd/Zn ratios in the surface sediments (1990–2007) indicated that Lake Shinji sediments have ratios of 0.0067–0.0074, higher than those of Tokyo Bay sediments (0.0054 on average in 1990–2003), which have been polluted primarily by effluent discharges. In contrast, the ratios in Lake Nakaumi sediments (0.0053–0.0060) were close to those in Tokyo Bay sediments. Rainwater and aerosols, which were strongly affected by air pollutants from the Asian continent, have much higher Cd/Zn ratios of 0.014–0.016. This suggests that the Lake Shinji sediments with higher Cd/Zn ratios are less affected by effluent discharges. Hence, Lake Shinji sediments may be suitable for assessing the environmental impact of the long-range transport of heavy metals from the Asian continent.  相似文献

Diatom assemblages in sediments from two subalpine lakes in the Uinta Mountains, Utah, show asynchronous changes that are related to both anthropogenic and natural inputs of dust. These lakes are downwind of sources of atmospheric inputs originating from mining, industrial, urban, agricultural and natural sources that are distributed within tens to hundreds of kilometers west and south of the Uinta Mountains. Sediment cores were retrieved from Marshall and Hidden lakes to determine the impacts of atmospheric pollution, especially metals. Paleolimnological techniques, including elemental analyses and 210Pb and 239+240Pu dating, indicate that both lakes began receiving eolian inputs from anthropogenic sources in the late 1800s with the greatest increases occurring after the early 1900s. Over the last century, sediments in Marshall Lake, which is closer to the Wasatch Front and receives more precipitation than Hidden Lake, received twice the concentrations of metals and phosphorus as Hidden Lake. Comparison of diatom and elemental data reveals coeval changes in geochemistry and diatom assemblages at Marshall Lake, but not at Hidden Lake; however, a major shift in diatom assemblages occurs at Hidden Lake in the seventeenth century. The change in diatoms at Marshall Lake is marked by the near disappearance of Cyclotella stelligera and C. pseudostelligera and an increase in benthic, metal-tolerant diatoms. This change is similar to changes in other lakes that have been attributed to metal pollution. The marked change in diatom assemblages at Hidden Lake indicates a shift in lake-water pH from somewhat acidic to circumneutral. We hypothesize that this change in pH is related to drought-induced changes in input of carbonate-rich desert dust.  相似文献

In many Swedish lakes, the fallout of 137Cs from the Chernobyl accident in April 1986 has largely accumulated in the sediments. The availability and transfer of deposited 137Cs to biota is influenced by factors such as resuspension. The frequency of resuspension and the 137Cs-content of different fish species was studied in three shallow lakes in Uppland, central Sweden, and in one deeper lake in northern Sweden. Resuspension was measured by the use of sediment traps. Sedimentation rates measured from the traps in the shallower lakes were 5–10 times higher than normal for this type of lake, indicating that resuspension was an important factor. The decrease of the 137Cs-content in muscle tissue of pike, perch and roach was slow in each of the shallow lakes. 137Cs decreased by about 30% over a period of 2 years in the shallowest lake (maximum depth 4 m), whereas 137Cs decreased by 50% in the deeper lakes (maximum depth 10 m). The slower rates of decline of 137Cs in biota from the shallow lakes, are probably a function of sediment dynamics (mainly influenced by lake morphometry, wind direction and strength). They may be influenced, also, by bioavailability of resuspended sediment material. In the deepest northern lake, much of the 137Cs-containing material collected in the sediment traps originated from the catchment area. Resuspension was minimal, and the high activity of 137Cs in the sediment had no effect on content or decline of 137Cs in lake fish.  相似文献

To investigate the impact of water impoundment on the metal contamination in sediments cores from the three tributaries of Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the concentrations, distribution, bioavailability, and potential risk of eight trace metals between summer and winter were analyzed using sequential analysis. The mean contents of all studied metals were higher than the geochemical background value, and were higher in summer than in winter. The results of the partitioning study indicated that Cr and Ni prevailed in the residual fraction, while a small proportion was found in the easily soluble fractions. Cu and Zn were distributed mainly in the residual and reducible fraction, while Cd and Pb were predominantly associated with non-residual fractions. These observations suggested that the most easily mobilized metals in the study area were Cd and Pb. The mean enrichment factors (EF) of Cu, Zn, Cd and Hg were higher than 1.5, revealing the potential anthropogenic inputs, whilst the EF of other metals remained within the range of natural variability. The positive correlation between non-residual Cu, Zn and Cd and their EF values further indicated that anthropogenic inputs were the potentially major contributor for the enrichment of Cu, Zn and Cd in TGR sediments. The results evaluated by both potential ecological risk index and modified risk assessment code (mRAC) of all sampling sites demonstrated the relatively high potential risk of sediment contamination effect in TGR.  相似文献

The first part of the paper discusses the significance of using either concentration or accumulation values for expressing the results of investigations of lake sediment cores aimed at studying the history of heavy metal pollution. Neither the values for heavy metal concentration in the lake sediment, whether expressed per gram dry sediment or per gram soluble (organic) sediment, nor the values for their total annual accumulation per unit area of the lake bottom, can, on their own, provide an accurate picture of past pollution conditions, but when considered in combination they render a fairly reliable and detailed interpretation. The second part of the paper deals with Pb, Cd and Hg analyses of cores of varved sediments from several lakes in N. Sweden. Pb and Cd pollution increased during the second half of the 19th century. In most lakes, Hg pollution seems first to have started during the 20th century. Marked increases in both concentration and accumulation of heavy metals took place during the 20th century. For recent decades, the estimated accumulation rates of heavy metals from anthropogenic sources are: Pb 0.5–1.5 µg cm–2 yr–1, Cd 15–30 ng cm–2 yr–1 and Hg 1–2 ng cm–2 yr–1, Higher values were recorded in lakes affected by local emissions.  相似文献

The distribution of 137Cs and 239,240Pu in sediment core samples of the Finnish lakes Laukunlampi, Lovojärvi and Pääjärvi were determined. The sediment samples were collected using dry ice and liquid nitrogen freezing methods. The sediments of these lakes are annually laminated. A clear maximum concentration of 137Cs and 239,240Pu was found in sediment layers formed during 1962–1964, the years of maximum fallout, and the middle of the 1950's can be estimated from the 137Cs and 239,240Pu profiles. The highest concentrations, 11 500 and 820 pCi kg–1 dry wt for 137Cs and 239,240Pu, respectively, were found in the sediment of Laukunlampi. The vertical distribution was similar for 137Cs and 239,240Pu in the lakes investigated. A slight migration of 239,240Pu and 137Cs was found and the migration of 137Cs seems to be higher than that of 239,240Pu. The advantages of 137Cs dating method are rapidity and simplicity. 239,240Pu is preferable when the sample size is small. The agreement found between 137Cs and 239,240Pu dates and the annual laminae show that these fallout radio isotopes can be used for dating sediments formed during the past 25 years.  相似文献

One important assumption in applying210Pb-dating is that atmospherically deposited Pb is immobilized in the peat or sediment column. This assumption has been challenged widely, but has never been evaluated experimentally. We evaluated Pb mobility and the chemical forms in which Pb is stabilized in peat profiles by adding either soluble or particulate Pb to intact peat cores that were maintained under different water level regimes (permanently high, permanently low, fluctuating between high and low) and were subjected to simulated precipitation over a five month period. By analyzing the behavior of stable Pb we made inferences about the expected behavior of210Pb. Results indicate that added soluble Pb2+ was retained in the peat through physiochemical binding to organic matter, and as such Pb2+ was largely immobile in peat even under conditions of a fluctuating water table. Added particulate Pb was largely (most likely by physical entrapment), but not completely, immobilized in peat. In none of the water table treatments was there evidence to support mobility of Pb by alternating formation and oxidation of Sulfides, or by any other mechanism. The binding of Pb2+ with organic matter at the peat surface, and the absence of Pb mobility lend credence to210Pb-dating ofSphagnum-dominated peat deposits, which are over 90% organic matter throughout, and have high cation exchange capacities.  相似文献

Abstract

The distribution, contamination status, and ecological risks of heavy metals in Tahaddart estuary were investigated. 24 surface sediment samples and two cores were collected and analyzed for major (Al and Fe), heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn), and grain size composition. The heavy metals assessment was carried out using different environmental indices. The results indicated that the spatial distribution patterns of Al, Fe, and Zn were mainly determined by the distribution of the finer grained fraction (<63?μm) in the sediment. In contrast, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb concentrations were controlled by anthropogenic activities (vehicular traffic from Highway Bridge and thermal power plant). The distribution of heavy metals in sediment cores showed an upward enrichment in heavy metals with high concentration found in the uppermost may related to the increasing in human activities. The pollution indexes confirmed that the Tahaddart estuary sediment was considerably to high contaminated by heavy metals near to different anthropogenic inputs. Similarly, the potential ecological risk index and the biological risk index present 21% probability of toxicity posing potential risk to the aquatic organisms. These results provide basic information that can be used to protect and improve the quality of this ecosystem.  相似文献

Data obtained from a small (150 ha) experimental catchment, Hereford U.K., have shown that land drains contributed >50% of the total catchment suspended sediment (SS) yield over a two year period. In one of the monitored drains, annual sediment yields were 964 and 978 kg ha–1. Particulate phosphorus (PP) contributed >60% of total phosphorus lost through the drains and at least 73% of the total drain load came from topsoil. A major question that was not answered by the monitoring programme was whether SS and PP loads had increased since the drains had been installed between the 1960s and 1980s. To address this problem, a sediment yield record was reconstructed from the Kyre Pool catchment in Worcestershire that has a similar drainage history and soil types. Reservoir sediments were dated using the 210Pb crs method and results suggest a fourfold increase in SS yield (300–1170 kg ha–1 yr–1) and PP loads (0.19–0.79 kg ha–1 yr–1) since the 1960s. The most recent SS and PP loads are comparable to those obtained from catchment monitoring. The high lake sediment 137Cs inventory suggests a significant influx of eroded topsoil and 137Cs activities in the most recent lake sediments are comparable to those of monitored land drains, supporting the hypothesis that land drainage has had a major impact on SS and PP yields and pathways.  相似文献

Remote alpine regions were considered to be largely unimpacted by anthropogenic disturbance, but it is now clear these areas are changing rapidly. It is often difficult to identify the causal processes underpinning ecological change because the main drivers (direct and indirect climate forcing, land use change and atmospheric deposition) are acting simultaneously. In addition, alpine landscapes are morphometrically complex with strong local environmental gradients creating natural heterogeneity which acts as a variable filter to climate and anthropogenic forcing, emphasizing the need for analyzing responses at multiple sites. The eastern margin of Tibet is a hotspot of global biodiversity and is affected by both atmospheric N and dust deposition, whereas regional climate warming is comparatively recent. Here we use 210Pb and 137Cs dated sediment records from nine alpine lakes, and statistical measures of diatom ecological change (turnover and PCA axis 1 scores) to determine regional scale patterns in community response to global environmental change forcing over approximately the last 150 years. The study lakes showed contrasting ecological responses with increased nutrient input as the primary driver of change, mediated by lake morphology and catchment characteristics. Turnover rates of diatom composition, although low, are significantly associated with lake volume, lake area, altitude and DOC.  相似文献

Concentration and distribution of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were determined in 26 soil profiles (n = 78) of northern Kentucky in response to environmental concerns about increasing anthropogenic inputs in a fast-paced urbanizing area. The selected sites represent alluvial, glacial till or residual soils that have not received any biosolid- or industrial-waste applications. Mean concentrations of Zn (53.8 mg kg?1) and Ni (25.9 mg kg?1) were the highest in the soil profile, whereas Cd (0.21 mg kg?1) was present only in trace amounts. All metals were within the low to middle range of baseline concentrations reported for US soils, suggesting minimal anthropogenic inputs. The distribution of Cu, Cr, Ni, and Zn increased with soil depth, whereas Cd and Pb concentrations were unaffected throughout the soil profile. Alluvial soils had the highest overall metal accumulations, particularly in surface soil horizons, indicating potential metal enrichment through depositional processes. The presence of a fragipan horizon or depth to bedrock did not significantly affect metal retention. Single correlation and multiple regression analyses indicated OM and pH as the most influential soil parameters for metal retention, followed by cation exchange capacity (CEC) and CEC/clay. Single correlations among metals suggested strong covariance of Zn with most metals throughout the soil profile, but weaker for Pb and Ni.  相似文献

Sediment cores from nine different lakes in the Tatra Mountains, collected as part of the EU funded AL:PE, MOLAR and EMERGE projects investigating natural environmental records stored in remote mountain lake sediment sequences, were dated radiometrically by 210Pb and 137Cs. At five sites, D?ugi Staw G?sienicowy and Zielony Staw G?sienicowy on the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains and Starolesnianske pleso, Ni?né Terianske pleso, and L’adové pleso on the Slovak side of the Tatra Mountains, the cores were sectioned at close intervals and analysed in detail to produce a high resolution chronology. For the remaining four sites, Zmarzly Staw G?sienicowy (Poland), and Vel’ké Hincovo pleso, Vy?né Temnosmre?inské pleso, Vy?né Wahlenbergovo pleso (Slovakia), it was sufficient to establish a low resolution sketch chronology and only a few samples were analysed from each core. At L’adové pleso, multiple cores were collected in order to establish spatial distribution of sediments over the bed of the lake.
