Semantic impairments have been divided into storage deficits, in which the semantic representations themselves are damaged, and access deficits, in which the representations are intact but access to them is impaired. The behavioural phenomena that have been associated with access deficits include sensitivity to cueing, sensitivity to presentation rate, performance inconsistency, negative serial position effects, sensitivity to number and strength of competitors, semantic blocking effects, disordered selection between strong and weak competitors, correlation between semantic deficits and executive function deficits and reduced word frequency effects. Four general accounts have been proposed for different subsets of these phenomena: abnormal refractoriness, too much activation, impaired competitive selection and deficits of semantic control. A combination of abnormal refractoriness and impaired competitive selection can account for most of the behavioural phenomena, but there remain several open questions. In particular, it remains unclear whether access deficits represent a single syndrome, a syndrome with multiple subtypes or a variable collection of phenomena, whether the underlying deficit is domain-general or domain-specific, whether it is owing to disorders of inhibition, activation or selection, and the nature of the connection (if any) between access phenomena in aphasia and in neurologically intact controls. Computational models offer a promising approach to answering these questions.  相似文献

Capacitance is a fundamental neuronal property. One common way to measure capacitance is to deliver a small voltage-clamp step that is long enough for the clamp current to come to steady state, and then to divide the integrated transient charge by the voltage-clamp step size. In an isopotential neuron, this method is known to measure the total cell capacitance. However, in a cell that is not isopotential, this measures only a fraction of the total capacitance. This has generally been thought of as measuring the capacitance of the ??well-clamped?? part of the membrane, but the exact meaning of this has been unclear. Here, we show that the capacitance measured in this way is a weighted sum of the total capacitance, where the weight for a given small patch of membrane is determined by the voltage deflection at that patch, as a fraction of the voltage-clamp step size. This quantifies precisely what it means to measure the capacitance of the ??well-clamped?? part of the neuron. Furthermore, it reveals that the voltage-clamp step method measures a well-defined quantity, one that may be more useful than the total cell capacitance for normalizing conductances measured in voltage-clamp in nonisopotential cells.  相似文献

Drawing upon in-depth interviews, this article explores the cultural resources that settler Australians use to explain Aboriginal issues. It is argued that the ‘whiteness studies’ approach has only limited value in explaining contemporary settler/indigenous relations. Focusing upon race categories and race prejudice produces a partial explanation. Other important explanatory frameworks and resources include Australian nationalism, egalitarianism and political culture more generally.  相似文献

The great ape species, as currently defined, may include markedly different subspecies, alternatively, the majority of intraspeclflc variation may be observed at the populational level within a single subspecies. The recent discovery of three closely related cell surface receptors that bind to progesterone and mediate its actions on various cytoplasmic signalling cascades has been heralded as a major break-through. The reason for this is all too obvious. Progesterone is an essential regulator of all major reproductive events and progestins and antiprogestins are widely used in the treatment of many different gynaecological and obstetrical disorders. The novel membrane progestin receptors (mPRalpha, beta, gamma) reportedly resemble and function as G-protein-coupled receptors and therefore are promising pharmaceutical targets. However, our studies failed to corroborate that mPRs are expressed on the cell surface, that they mediate rapid progesterone signalling events, and even that they are bona fide progestin binding moieties. While the reason for these startling opposing results remains unclear, a critical review of existing data may help to shed some light onto the controversial mPRs. Time has come to talk.  相似文献

Five years ago systematic determination and theoretical analysis of all protein structures encoded in model prokaryotic organisms was proposed as a powerful way to obtain new insights into protein function and the variety of protein folds. What has been the pay-off from studying structures in genomic context? Have we learned anything new about protein structure? Can we now predict protein function better? In this contribution, I summarize the status of large-scale structure determination projects on prokaryotes and provide an overview of the main results obtained from experimental and theoretical studies in this dynamic research field.  相似文献

Recent large-scale cloning studies have shown that the ratio of Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes may be important in the obesity-associated gut microbiota, but the species these phyla represent in this ecosystem has not been examined. The Bacteroidetes data from the recent Turnbaugh study were examined to determine those members of the phylum detected in human faecal samples. In addition, FISH analysis was performed on faecal samples from 17 healthy, nonobese donors using probe Bac303, routinely used by gut microbiologists to enumerate Bacteroides – Prevotella populations in faecal samples, and another probe (CFB286) whose target range has some overlap with that of Bac303. Sequence analysis of the Turnbaugh data showed that 23/519 clones were chimeras or erroneous sequences; all good sequences were related to species of the order Bacteroidales , but no one species was present in all donors. FISH analysis demonstrated that approximately one-quarter of the healthy, nonobese donors harboured high numbers of Bacteroidales not detected by probe Bac303. It is clear that Bacteroidales populations in human faecal samples have been underestimated in FISH-based studies. New probes and complementary primer sets should be designed to examine numerical and compositional changes in the Bacteroidales during dietary interventions and in studies of the obesity-associated microbiota in humans and animal model systems.  相似文献
