In species where males and females interact during mating, the role of females in sexual selection cannot always be demonstrated unambiguously. Here we present a model system to study female choice for mates. Orchesella cinca is a soil-dwelling hexapod with indirect sperm transfer. Females and males do not interact physically for reproduction. We gave females the choice between spermatophores produced by two different males. Paternity analysis based on microsatellite variation revealed that offspring in one clutch were sired by one male only. Direct observations showed that after a female has taken up a spermatophore, the female's receptivity to further spermatophore uptake seem to end. Our results imply that the female is in full control of paternity.  相似文献

Nysius huttoni White is a polygamous bug, endemic to New Zealand, and an important pest of wheat and brassicas. This bug has a female-biased sexual size dimorphism but relative to body length, males have longer antennae, suggesting that the allometric scales of antennal–body relationships may be highly selective in sexual selection. Body weight and most morphometric traits measured have no effect on mating success of either sex. Males significantly preferred mating with females having thicker abdomens, more mature eggs, and longer ovipositors. This result suggests that males may select their mates on the basis of immediate reproductive benefit: fertilizing more eggs and ensuring better survival of these eggs. Males with large genital structures have mating advantages over those with small ones, suggesting that precopulation sexual selection in this species act on male genital traits rather than body weight and nonsexual traits. Finally, females significantly preferred males with greater slopes for the antennal-body relationship for mating. The allometry in the male antennal length may be an indicator of male reproductive fitness.  相似文献

Sexual selection and sexual signaling have been prominent topics in recent behavioral studies, but limited data have led to controversy regarding these topics. For example, the Hawaiian Drosophila are often cited as examples in which female choice has resulted in the evolution of elaborate male courtship signals, but relatively few data exist to test these claims adequately. We studied D. grimshawi, a lek-forming Hawaiian Drosophila, to determine whether there was evidence for female choice without male competition and to elucidate the possible cues females use to discriminate. Male mating success was found to be nonrandom and males that courted females intensely and deposited many pheromone-containing streaks on the substrate were the most successful. Hence, multiple cues seem to be involved in male mating success in this species. Some males performed only one display, however, and may represent an alternate male mating tactic. The protein content of the adult male diet significantly influenced the level of pheromone streak deposition, and thus, foraging environment may affect the outcome of sexual selection.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated mating frequencies of female scorpionflies Panorpa germanica in the field using two different experimental approaches. First, the mating status of wild‐caught females was estimated on the basis of sperm numbers present inside their sperm storage organs. Secondly, the number of mating partners wild‐caught females must have had was inferred from mother‐offspring analyses of a polymorphic microsatellite locus. Our results suggest a very low mating frequency of wild female P. germanica. Consequently, the risk of sperm competition is rather low in this species. The relevance of female mate choice in relation to the low mating frequency is discussed.  相似文献

Males should increase their investment in ejaculates whenever they are faced with an increased risk of sperm competition. Burying beetles (Nicrophorus vespilloides), insects that breed on small vertebrate carcasses, offer an ideal model with which to examine sperm allocation tactics because females typically mate with many males prior to laying eggs. Males compete directly for control of carcasses, and males losing such contests often become satellites, lurking in the vicinity of the carcass and attempting surreptitious copulations with the resident female. We predicted that both the dominant resident male and the satellite male would increase their sperm allocation in the presence of the other, but that relative to dominant males, satellite males would allocate a greater number of sperm per ejaculate. We employed a repeated-measures design in which two full-sib rival males, differing only in their dominance status, were each mated a single time to a previously-inseminated female under two conditions, once in the absence of their rival and once in the presence of their rival. Satellite males exhibited longer copulation durations than dominant resident males when both males were present on a carcass. Copulation durations of dominant males did not differ in the presence or absence of satellite males. Contrary to expectation, the increased copulation durations of satellite males did not result in a greater share of paternity relative to dominant males. The absence of any discernible effect of increased copulation durations on paternity in satellite males could be due to post-copulatory preferences of females or, alternatively, satellite males may require longer durations of copulation to transfer the same amount of sperm as dominant males.  相似文献

Although the karyotypes of twelve species of Dieuches Dohrn, 1860 belonging to Rhyparochrominae have been described so far, there is no information about heterochromatin and its characterization in terms of base composition for any of the species. In the present paper, C-banding and fluorescent banding have been applied for the first time to three species of Dieuches : D. uniguttatus, D. insignis (2n = 12 = 8A + 2m + XY) and D. coloratus (2n = 14 = 10A + 2m + XY). Dieuches uniguttatus and D. insignis show distinct terminal C-bands along with a few interstitial bands in all the autosomal bivalents, whereas in D. coloratus , one autosomal pair is almost completely heterochromatic, three show C-positive bands while one is totally euchromatic. The sex chromosomes too show heterogeneity in distribution of C-heterochromatin among three Dieuches species. Characterization of heterochromatin in D. uniguttatus and D. insignis using DAPI/CMA3 staining reveals that in D. uniguttatus , C- heterochromatin blocks of all the autosomal bivalents, which are predominantly A–T rich, whereas in D. insignis , these are rich both in A–T and G–C. In D. uniguttatus, sex chromosomes X and Y have localized G–C rich regions whereas in D. insignis , these are scattered in X and absent in Y. As variations in the heterochromatin represent the main source of karyological differentiation among and within species, it seems that there occurred extensive redistribution of heterochromatin within the complement as the three species evolved. There is need for cytological details of more species to understand evolutionary aspects in the genus Dieuches .  相似文献

Few studies have examined potential costs of female choice and factors intrinsic to females that affect choice. To examine these factors, female house crickets, Acheta domesticus, were presented with a simultaneous choice between tapes of a priori attractive and unattractive male chirps. Females varied in age, nutritional condition, body size (potential fecundity), and size-relative reproductive investment. Female age had a significant effect on female choosiness: young females were selective, whereas older females were not selective. Nutritional condition, body size, and size-relative reproductive investment did not affect female choice. Females that chose the call of the attractive male spent approximately twice as long choosing as females that chose the unattractive male call.  相似文献

Summary Sperm transfer in the myrmicine antCarebara vidua was studied by making histological sections of newly mated queens. Queens are multiply inseminated, and longitudinal sections through the sperm- filled vagina show that the bundle of sperm from each male is enclosed in a layer of accessory gland secretion terminating in a plug of secretion in the female's vaginal orifice. This spermatophore breaks down soon after mating. The huge quantity of sperm packed into the spermatheca (ca. 16 mm3) suggests that the queen lays a large number of eggs in her lifetime, confirmed by the average of 1672 ovarioles in the two ovaries.  相似文献

The significance of female choice in shaping mating systems remains problematic. The following study clearly documents female preferences in a species of grasshopper,Schistocerca americana, over the course of 3 years. Three sets of animals were observed in an outdoor seminatural cage. Females were found to mate more often with large, heavy males. Furthermore, remating by a female within a week was less likely if she mated with a large or heavy male. Because females were found to oviposit 2 days after a mating on average, these large heavy males may also be chosen cryptically (as defined in the literature) and father more offspring.  相似文献

Mating and consequently reproductive success in male vertebrates are predominantly determined by intermale competition and female mate choice. Their relative importance however, is still poorly understood. We investigated the interrelationship between male dominance rank — a formal indicator of male competitive ability — female mate choice, and male mating success in a multimale-multifemale group of captive chimpanzees. In addition, we examined the relationship between male dominance rank and reproductive success determined by genetic paternity analysis over a 13-yr period in the same captive population. We related the frequencies of sociosexual behaviors to the female anogenital swelling stage and female fertile phase as determined by urinary and fecal progestogen analysis. Rates of behaviors in both sexes increased with increasing intensity of female swelling, but they were not influenced by the timing of the fertile phase. Male mating success was clearly related to male dominance rank, with high-ranking males performing the overwhelming majority of copulations. This was mainly due to both rank-related rates of male soliciting behavior and intermale aggressiveness during the period of well-developed female anogenital swelling. Although females solicited copulations mainly from the high-ranking males and thus expressed a mate choice based on rank, their overall contribution in initiating copulations and thus influencing male mating success was low. The data on paternity from the population, which always contained 4 adult males, revealed that -males sired the majority (65%) of offspring. We conclude, that male dominance rank is an important determinant of male mating and reproductive success in captive (and presumably wild) chimpanzees and that female mate choice is of minor importance in modulating male reproductive outcome.  相似文献

Five types of haemocytes have been identified in the haemolymph ofSpilostethus hospes. Their morphology and micrometric measurements have been provided. Changes in the total and differential haemocyte population [total haemocyte count (THC) and differtial haemocyte count (DHC)] as well as in the absolute number of haemocytes in circulation have been assessed in relation to eclosion, sex and mating. The haemogram profile was studied prior to and immediately after eclosion and also prior to and after copulation. Though the THC was not significantly different immediately before and after eclosion, there was a significant increase in total count prior to copulation. Mated females registered an increase in total count but there was no appreciable change in the mated males. Granulocytes were the most abundant of the haemocyte types in both the sexes and mating caused a significant increase in the plasmatocyte count in females. Changes in the blood volume as well as the mitotic activity of the haemocytes is also discussed  相似文献

Newly hatched nymphs of the insect Oncopeltus fasciatus were exposed to various concentrations of CdCl2 administered in drinking water until the end of adult life. Significant nymphal mortalities were observed at concentrations above 30 mg Cd/l (corresponding to the LC50). The duration of the nymphal stages increased in proportion to the Cd concentration; at the lowest Cd concentration of 10 mg Cd/l, the median duration was significantly prolonged by one day, while at the highest concentration of 100 mg Cd/l it was increased by 10 days over the control group. The weight of newly emerged adults lineally decreased with Cd concentration, being reduced to half the weight of controls at 100 mg Cd/l. In addition, a proportionality between delay in development and weight reduction was found in Cd-treated adults. Survival of adult females was decreased at concentrations higher than 10 mg Cd/l, while males were only affected at 30 mg Cd/l or higher doses. Reproduction was the most affected parameter. Oviposition rate, fecundity and fertility of females exposed to 10 mg Cd/l were significantly lower than controls (73%, 58% and 55% relative to controls, respectively). Hatchability of the eggs laid by treated females was also reduced. These results show that development and reproduction of O. fasciatus are seriously impaired at sublethal Cd concentrations.  相似文献

I tested the utility of Seyfarth's (1977) model of rank-related attractiveness to explain the distribution of allogrooming behavior among captive bonobos (Pan paniscus). Adult female bonobos generally have high social status and may be dominant over males. As predicted by the model, I found that high-ranking adult females received most allogrooming within each of the four investigated groups. Among adult female-adult female dyads, however, allogrooming was not clearly associated with dominance rank. Contradictory to predictions of the model, the highest-ranking females were responsible for most displacements over allogrooming, and grooming competition is positively correlated with dominance rank. In the second part of this study, I investigated the social significance of allogrooming body site preferences. Bonobos direct significantly most allogrooming to the face of conspecifics, and high- and low-ranking individuals, as well as males and females, differ significantly in their preferences for certain allogrooming sites. Subordinates and males tended to avoid facial grooming and preferred the back and anogenital region, while high-ranking individuals and females directed most allogrooming to the face and head of grooming partners. Data from this study support the hypothesis that high-ranking females are the most attractive grooming partners within a female-centered bonobo society. Many other aspects of allogrooming behavior, however, are not consistent with the model of rank-related attractiveness.  相似文献

Newly moulted females of the insect Oncopeltus fasciatus were exposed to cadmium (Cd) dissolved in the drinking water (50-400 mg l(-1) Cd) for 5 days. Cd exposure delayed ovarian maturation and inhibited egg production. Exposure to Cd, moreover, decreased hemolymph levels of the two major vitellogenin polypeptides of O. fasciatus, VG1 and VG2, in a concentration-dependent way, probably by a reduction in their synthesis. The ovarian levels of VG1 and VG2 were also decreased in Cd-exposed females. It was next investigated whether Cd effects might be a consequence of the endocrine disruption of vitellogenin synthesis, which is controlled by juvenile hormone (JH). JH replacement therapy did not restore VG1 or VG2 levels in Cd-exposed females, but did so in starved females. Our results do not therefore support a disturbance of JH production or a reduction in feeding as the cause of the reduced vitellogenin polypeptide levels, but rather point to the site of action of JH, the JH receptor, as the target of Cd effects.  相似文献

The genitalia of the female folding-trapdoor spider Antrodiaetus unicolor are characterized by two pairs of spermathecae that are arranged in a single row and connected to the roof of the bursa copulatrix. Each single spermatheca is divided into three main parts: stalk, bowl, and bulb, which are surrounded by the spermathecal gland. The epithelium of the spermathecal gland is underlain by a muscle meshwork and consists of different types of cells partly belonging to glandular cell units (Class 3 gland cells) that extend into pores in the cuticle of the stalk and bowl. Interestingly, the bulb lacks glandular pores and is characterized by a weakly sclerotized cuticle. This peculiarly structured bulb probably plays an important role in the discharge of the sperm mass. It is suggested that by contraction of the muscle layer the sperm mass may be squeezed out, when the bulb invaginates and expands into the spermathecal lumen, pushing the sperm to the uterus lumen. Each glandular unit consists of usually one or two central secretory cells that are for the most part surrounded by a connecting cell that again is surrounded by a canal cell. The canal cell, finally, is separated from the other epithelial cells (intercalary cells) located between the glandular units by several thin sheath cells that form the outer enveloping layer of the unit. The secretions are released through a cuticular duct that originates proximally between the apical part of the connecting cell and the apical microvilli of the secretory cells and runs into a pore of the spermathecal cuticle. The glandular products of the Class 3 gland cells likely contribute to the conditions allowing long-term storage of the spermatozoa in this species. Details regarding the ovary, the uterus internus, and the uterus externus are reported. Most of the secretion that composes the chorion of the egg is produced in the ovary. Glandular cell units observed in the uterus externus differ structurally from those in the spermathecae and likely play a different role. Finally, we briefly discuss our results on the female genitalia of A. unicolor in the light of knowledge about the reproductive biology of spiders.  相似文献

We documented four adolescent female transfers—two emigrations, two immigrations—during a 12-month study from August 1994 to July 1995 on one group of muriquis (Brachyteles arachnoides) at Estação Biológica de Caratinga in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Intergroup transfers occurred throughout the year independent of season. A total of 613 focal samples of 10-min duration conducted on six adolescent females (5–9 years of age) revealed significant differences in the behavior of migrant versus natal resident females. During the seasons encompassing their respective group transfers, both emigrants and immigrants devoted more of their time to resting than resident females belonging to the same age cohorts did. Time spent feeding on mature fruit was higher for one emigrant and lower for both immigrants compared to the two resident females. Emigrant females had fewer neighbors within a 1-m radius than resident females did, whereas immigrant females were within a 1-m radius of adult females and within a 5-m radius of adult males more often than resident adolescent females were. Adolescent females were displaced on 26 occasions. Displacements occurred mainly during the dry seasons (n = 21) and mainly at food sources (n = 21). Using the number of focal samples conducted on each female as an estimate of observation time, immigrant females were displaced at twice the rate of residents. However, like other behavioral differences detected between resident and migrant adolescent females, differences in individual displacement rates were evident only during the season in which each of the immigrants joined the group. Collectively, our findings imply that female intergroup transfer in this population involves relatively mild, short-term costs.  相似文献

Researchers have proposed several hypotheses to explain pair-living in primates. In particular, when males are not involved in direct parental care, pair-living may be related to female dispersal, infanticide prevention, or male mate/resource defense. We aimed to evaluate, through a better understanding of the ranging patterns of avahis, which hypotheses may best account for pair-living in these nocturnal lemurs. We collected focal observations over 26 nights, June–September 2004, in a littoral forest (Sainte Luce, southeastern Madagascar) on 4 adult radiocollared avahis [Avahi laniger (Tattersall, I. (1982). The Primates of Madagascar. Columbia University Press, New York.) or Avahi meridionalis (Zaramody in Primate Reports 74:9–22, 2006)]. We followed 2 males and 2 females from 2 groups: B, a male-female couple, and A, comprising the parental pair and 1-yr-old female offspring. The adult females birthed in August. We recorded resting and feeding tree points (via global positioning system) for home range calculation through minimum convex polygon and kernel methods. We provide the first quantitative information on the ranging behavior of 2 male and 2 female avahis. Home range/daily path length values (means) are higher than the ones previously reported for the same and other folivorous pair-living lemur species. On average, the 2 females spent more time feeding and traveled shorter distances than the 2 males did. Male–female cohesion (mean values), possibly enhanced by offspring presence, was higher in A and after births than in B and before births, respectively. Although male avahis may be forced into pair-living owing to energy constraints related to size, locomotion, and diet, females might accept pair-living in exchange for indirect territory defense and mate guarding.  相似文献

Four hypotheses about the temporal variation of the number of spermatozoa in the spermatheca of once-mated females were tested in the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria. The best fit provided a regression model that assumed a sudden drop in sperm numbers being indicative of sperm ejection by females. Thereafter, one-fifth of an average ejaculate is stored. Low numbers of sperm stored do not lead to female sperm limitation, as none of the fitness parameters measured, fertilization success, hatching success, and offspring sex ratio, were correlated with the number of sperm present. Fertilization success decreased with successive egg pods. The offspring sex ratio was slightly male biased and tended to increase throughout the laying period. By applying our sperm ejection model to an independent data set of Parker and Smith (1975), we show that the low numbers of sperm retained by the female and subsequent sperm mixing rather than direct replacement may explain the high P2 values found in this species.  相似文献
