Copulation behavior inMacrohaltica jamaicensis involved a complex, relatively stereotyped series of events both inside and outside the female. Only incomplete sperm transfer occurred in many copulations. Some aspects of male copulatory courtship behavior performed during and following copulation were consistently coordinated with particular stages in sperm transfer. This coordination suggests that copulatory courtship may function to induce critical internal female responses which sometimes do not occur, such as relaxing the bursal muscles to permit deeper penetration, and allowing sperm transfer to occur before the spermatophore is discarded.  相似文献

A tree cricket,Truljalia hibinonis, is known to show a novel sperm removal during copulation. The pattern of copulations and ovipositions showed that the sperm removal functioned to increase reproductive success for sperm removing males. The sperm removal by males evolves under the system in which female accept multiple mating. The possible benefits of multiple mating for females are examined. Multiple mating did not seem to be necessary for avoiding sperm depletion, because females stored huge number of sperm in their sperm storage organ after finishing oviposition. The ingestion of metanotal secretion during copulation also had no effect on increasing fecundity and egg size. However, mating experience may have a positive effect on increasing fecundity slightly, though there were no differences between once- and twice-mated females. The other possible benefits for each male and female are discussed.  相似文献

Some aspects of sperm competition were studied in the white spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) breeding in Doñana National Park (SW Spain). Shorter pair copulation intervals occurred during the prelaying period, when females were subjected to a relatively high frequency of extra-pair copulations. Pair copulation intervals with an intermediate extra-pair copulation by the male mate were longer than those without extra-pair copulation. This result indicates that males need a time of recovery between copulations before they can perform another. Extra-pair copulations by the females did not affect the length of intervals between pair copulations. There were no differences between the lengths of the intervals between an extra-pair copulation by the female and the following pair copulation for cases in which the male mate detected an intruder male attempting copulation with his mate and those in which the intruder remained undetected. However, the correlations obtained between copulatory intervals for detected and undetected cases suggest a copulatory response by their mates, although affected by the required recovery time between copulations by the males. Finally, since extra-pair copulations mainly occurred while male mates were collecting nest material, they engaged in this activity shortly after pair copulations, probably to avoid a last-male advantage under the sperm competition pressure.  相似文献

Males should increase their investment in ejaculates whenever they are faced with an increased risk of sperm competition. Burying beetles (Nicrophorus vespilloides), insects that breed on small vertebrate carcasses, offer an ideal model with which to examine sperm allocation tactics because females typically mate with many males prior to laying eggs. Males compete directly for control of carcasses, and males losing such contests often become satellites, lurking in the vicinity of the carcass and attempting surreptitious copulations with the resident female. We predicted that both the dominant resident male and the satellite male would increase their sperm allocation in the presence of the other, but that relative to dominant males, satellite males would allocate a greater number of sperm per ejaculate. We employed a repeated-measures design in which two full-sib rival males, differing only in their dominance status, were each mated a single time to a previously-inseminated female under two conditions, once in the absence of their rival and once in the presence of their rival. Satellite males exhibited longer copulation durations than dominant resident males when both males were present on a carcass. Copulation durations of dominant males did not differ in the presence or absence of satellite males. Contrary to expectation, the increased copulation durations of satellite males did not result in a greater share of paternity relative to dominant males. The absence of any discernible effect of increased copulation durations on paternity in satellite males could be due to post-copulatory preferences of females or, alternatively, satellite males may require longer durations of copulation to transfer the same amount of sperm as dominant males.  相似文献

In the freshwater planarian Dugesia polychroa (Tricladida, Paludicola), both animals fulfil the male and female role simultaneously in any given copulation. This study presents the first detailed account of the copulatory behaviour, timing and frequency in this species. We also describe an experimental set-up that enables continuous, undisturbed observation of large numbers of animals. D. polychroa pairs copulate repeatedly in the lab (up to eight times in 5 d). Animals that were kept in isolation for longer, were more likely to copulate. The mating behaviour lacks a behaviourally recognizable precopulatory courtship sequence, suggesting that precopulatory assessment is absent or only marginally important. Copulation duration ranged from a few minutes to 2.5 h and showed a distinct bimodal distribution. Two copulation types were recognized: short (<35min) and long (≥35min). Histological analysis showed that sperm transfer is rare during short copulations, but after long copulations all animals had received sperm and sperm transfer was reciprocal in all pairs where both partners could be investigated. Hence, only long copulations are ‘true’ copulations with sperm transfer. Pairs with short copulations (40 % of all pairs) had fewer long copulations, but a higher overall copulatory activity. Copulation rate is constant over 5 d for both copulation types. It does, however, fluctuate with the time of day: most (long) copulations take place at night. Pairs that copulated more often, also produced more cocoons. We argue mat in-copula assessment during the first 30 min of the copulation determines whether copulations are sometimes interrupted before sperm are transferred and that this explains the occurrence of short and long copulations.  相似文献

The Hihi or Stitchbird Notiomystis cincta breeding system is highly variable and includes monogamy, polyandry, polygyny and polygynandry. Males have large testes (4.2% of body mass), very large numbers (1460 × 106) of sperm in their seminal glomera and an unusually enlarged cloacal protuberance. These features are also found in other species with highly variable mating systems where males are under intense sperm competition. Hihi copulate in two different positions: face to face and, more conventionally, with the male on the female's back. Face-to-face copulation is unique among birds and appears to be a form of forced copulation. The presence of enlarged cloacas in both sexes could aid the transfer of sperm. Both male and female Hihi appear to benefit from a mixed reproductive strategy where a female Hihi can solicit copulations from males other than her partner and male Hihi can perform extra-pair copulations both with willing females or by forced copulation.  相似文献

Time in copula in the swarming caddis fly Mystacides azurea L. (Trichoptera: Leptoceridae) ranged from 0.33 to 44.5 min. It increased with male age (wing wear) and male dry weight, but was independent of male and female size (forewing length), female wing wear and number of eggs in the females. Older males failed to transfer sperm during copulation more frequently than did younger ones. It is suggested that females benefit by interrupting prolonged copulations if sperm is not transferred rapidly, since being in copula might increase the risk of predation. Alternatively, young and old males follow different mating tactics; old males have a lower chance to acquire new mates and they do better by monopolizing a female, once they get one, by prolonging the copulation.  相似文献

The loss of sperm at copulation in Culicoides melleus was investigated with respect to the previous sexual experience of the female and the interval between her copulations. Approximately 40% of ejaculated sperm were lost if a male copulated with a female within 16 hours of her previous insemination by another male. Although studies on sperm competition examined a wide range of taxa, little is known about the selection pressures on male traits in systems with simultaneous risk of sperm competition and sexual cannibalism. Here, we experimentally studied how the risk of sperm competition affects male copulatory behavior in the sexually cannibalistic praying mantis Mantis religiosa. We recorded the onset and duration of copulations following the introduction of virgin, adult praying mantises into mating arenas with three different sex ratio treatments: polyandrous, monogamous, and polygynous. We did not detect any female phenotypic trait predicting cannibalism. The chance of male survival was related to his condition, with males in better condition being cannibalized significantly less often. In contrast, we did not identify any male trait that would favor some males to obtain copulations. Our results on copulation duration support sperm competition theory in that the copulations in the male‐biased treatment, where the perceived risk of sperm competition was greatest, were significantly longer than those in single‐male treatments. Importantly, males in better condition copulated significantly longer regardless of sex ratio. Overall, our study suggests that males can adjust their copulation behavior in response to the risk of sperm competition even in a system with frequent sexual cannibalism.  相似文献

In species with direct sperm transfer, copulation duration is a crucial trait that may affect male and female reproductive success and that may vary with the quality of the mating partner. Furthermore, traits such as copulation duration represent the outcome of behavioral interactions between the sexes, for which it is important—but often difficult—to determine which sex is in phenotypic control. Using a double‐mating protocol, we compared copulation durations between (1) virgin and nonvirgin and (2) sibling and nonsibling mating pairs in rufous grasshoppers Gomphocerippus rufus. Nonvirgin copulations took on average approximately 30% longer than virgin copulations, whereas relatedness of mating partners was not a significant predictor of copulation duration. Longer nonvirgin copulations may represent a male adaptation to sperm competition if longer copulations allow more sperm to be transferred or function as postinsemination mate guarding. The absence of differences between pairs with different degrees of relatedness suggests no precopulatory or preinsemination inbreeding avoidance mechanism has evolved in this species, perhaps because there is no inbreeding depression in this species, or because inbreeding avoidance occurs after copulation. Controlling for the effects of male and female mating status (virgin vs. nonvirgin) and relatedness (sibling vs. nonsibling), we found significant repeatabilities (R) in copulation duration for males (R = 0.33; 95% CI: 0.09–0.55) but not for females (R = 0.09; 95% CI: 0.00–0.30). Thus, copulation durations of males more strongly represent a nontransient trait expressed in a consistent manner with different mating partners, suggesting that some aspect of the male phenotype may determine copulation duration in this species. However, overlapping confidence intervals for our sex‐specific repeatability estimates indicate that higher sampling effort is required for conclusive evidence.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Male Panorpa scorpionflies offer salivary masses as nuptial gifts during copulation. Previous studies have shown that there is usually a strong correlation between the number or size of salivary masses provided and copulation duration. As a result of constant sperm transfer rates, copulation duration is the most important determinant of male fitness in these species. 2. Differences in copulation durations for gift‐giving and non‐gift‐giving males of the Caucasian scorpionfly Panorpa similis have been shown to be much smaller on average than those observed in other Panorpa species. In this study, we therefore focus on the number of sperm transferred in copulations of P. similis both with and without salivary masses. 3. We find that although the average copulation duration in the presence of nuptial gifts is only twice as long as the average copulation duration without nuptial gifts, gift‐giving males transfer almost 11 times more sperm during copulations than non‐gift‐giving males. This is as a result of substantially higher sperm transfer rates (sperm/minute) in copulations in which nuptial gifts are present. 4. Implications of this finding for the interpretation of the mating system of P. similis and the question of which sex controls sperm transfer rates are discussed.  相似文献

Females in many socially monogamous birds copulate hundreds of times more than necessary for fertilization, although little is known about the benefits of this excess. Females may not directly benefit from high copulation rates, but instead may exploit male interest in copulating to obtain benefits. In species with courtship feeding, females may trade copulations for food (immediate benefits hypothesis). I tested this hypothesis by analysing female behaviour during courtship in yellow-legged gulls, Larus cachinnans. Female gulls to some extent controlled sperm transfer, because they moved during copulation bouts, and this behaviour influenced the number of cloacal contacts per mounting that the male achieved. Female control was related to previous feeding by the male, and hence the male courtship feeding rate correlated with the cloacal contact rate. Males that give more food probably enhance their chances of fathering offspring. By analysing within-individual female behaviour, I also found that the number of cloacal contacts was higher when the male fed the female than when he did not, which indicates that female gulls followed a decision rule to resist copulation when food is not given. Overall, these results support the hypothesis that female gulls manipulate their mates to obtain food.  相似文献

We compared sex differences in behaviors leading to copulation of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in the Kalinzu Forest, Uganda with those of bonobos (Pan paniscus) at Wamba, D.R. Congo, using the same definition. Female chimpanzees were more likely to initiate copulation than female bonobos. While most of copulations (96%) were initiated by males in bonobos, among chimpanzees only 63% of copulations were initiated by males. Female bonobos initiated an interaction leading to copulation when males approached them within a short distance. On the other hand, both male and female chimpanzees initiated behavior at a longer distance. Higher proceptivity and a higher copulation rate during the maximal swelling period of female chimpanzees might suggest that they gain greater benefits from a high frequency of copulations than do female bonobos.  相似文献

Drosophila males sing a courtship song to achieve copulations with females. Females were recently found to sing a distinct song during copulation, which depends on male seminal fluid transfer and delays female remating. Here, it is hypothesized that female copulation song is a signal directed at the copulating male and changes ejaculate allocation. This may alter female remating and sperm usage, and thereby affect postcopulatory mate choice. Mechanisms of how female copulation song is elicited, how males respond to copulation song, and how remating is modulated, are considered. The potential adaptive value of female signaling during copulation is discussed with reference to vertebrate copulation calls and their proposed function in eliciting mate guarding. Female copulation song may be widespread within the Drosophila genus. This newly discovered behavior opens many interesting avenues for future research, including investigation of how sexually dimorphic neuronal circuits mediate communication between nervous system and reproductive organs.  相似文献

The duration of copulation in the gregarious shield bug, Parastrachia japonensis Scott (Hemiptera: Cydnidae), is of two types, the far more prevalent short-term copulation (average, 15 s) and the long-term coupulation (average, 23 min). Both types were thought to be equally effective in inseminating females. Recent evidence has suggested that there is, in fact, a discrepancy in insemination success between the two duration types of copulations. We carried out manipulated field studies to clarify the difference in insemination success between the two duration types and to determine whether there is some physical or physiological variability in females or males that might affect female receptivity to a long-term copulation. The findings indicated that, although a small percentage of short-term copulations resulted in some sperm transfer, long-term copulations were a far more effective way for males to inseminate females. Further, females experiencing long-term copulations were found to be at a slightly more advanced stage of ovarian development than those experiencing only short-term copulations, and may be deciding whether a long-term copulation occurs. Male size does not appear to affect copulation duration. It is concluded that the long-term type of copulation is the actual effective copulation duration in this species and the objective of all females. In the majority of socially monogamous bird species, femalessolicit or accept copulations from males other than their partner.Females may gain direct benefits from extrapair males, suchas greater access to resources, or indirect genetic benefitsthat will influence the future success of their offspring. However,one group of birds appears to be the exception to this generalrule; in the wildfowl (Anseriformes), all extrapair copulationsappear to be resisted by females. It has been suggested thatresistance behavior may be a strategy to allow females a greaterchoice of mates, either at the precopulatory level (to promotechoice of copulation partner) and/or the postcopulatory level(to promote multiple mating to increase their choice of sperm).This paper examines the function of female resistance behaviorin one of the dabbling ducks, the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos).Observations on a marked population of wild mallard and experimentswith captive birds found that although females showed a strongpreference for particular males that are the first to molt intotheir breeding plumage, male attractiveness did not influencefemale responses to pair or extrapair copulation attempts. Femaleresistance decreased the likelihood that copulation attemptswould end in successful insemination. The findings did not supportthe hypothesis that females resist copulations to promote femalechoice and the reasons why waterfowl may benefit from avoidingall extrapair copulations are discussed.  相似文献

Sperm competition studies typically identify copulation duration as an important predictor of paternity as it may determine the quantity of sperm transferred and thus paternity success. This study explores the relationship between copulation duration, male body size, male age and sperm transfer in the golden orb‐weaving spider, Nephila edulis. Paternity in this species is strongly associated with the relative frequency and duration of copulation, which is also influenced by male size. We determined the number of sperm transferred during copulation, by performing sperm counts in both the male copulatory organs (palps) and female sperm receptacle (spermatheca) of recently mated pairs. The total number of sperm recorded (the sum in the male palps and female spermathecae) was greater for younger males than older males, but did not vary with male body size. In general, younger males transferred more sperm and a greater proportion of their sperm supplies than older males and, among these younger males, larger individuals transferred more sperm. However, there were no significant size effects for older males. More sperm was transferred with longer copulations, but in contrast with previous studies, we found that larger males copulated for longer. The rate of sperm transferred was negatively correlated with the duration of copulation, suggesting that the variation in copulation duration in N. edulis may represent strategic investment by males to alter patterns of paternity, in addition to transferring additional sperm.  相似文献

Many sperm competition studies have identified copulation durationas an important predictor of paternity. This result is ofteninterpreted as a sperm transfer effect—it is assumed thatsperm transfer is limited by copulation duration. Here we testthe assumption of duration-dependent sperm transfer in the Australianredback spider, Latrodectus hasselti, in which a correlationbetween copulation duration and paternity has been implicatedin the evolution of a rare male self-sacrifice behavior. Maleredbacks facilitate sexual cannibalism by females during copulation.Sexual cannibalism is apparently adaptive for redback males,in part because it results in longer copulations (25 versus11 min.), and copulation duration is positively correlated withpaternity. We assessed sperm transfer in normal copulationsand in copulations that we terminated at 5, 10, or 20 min. Ourresults show that the paternity advantage of sexual cannibalismis not owing to time-dependent sperm transfer, as redback malestransfer the majority of their sperm within the first 5 minof copulation. This suggests that the link between copulationduration and paternity may instead be owing to cryptic femalechoice or the transfer of nongametic ejaculatory substances.Results further indicate that the act of cannibalism itselfmight play a role in mediating sperm transfer. This study highlightsthe importance of understanding mechanisms of sperm transferwhen attempting to interpret the outcome of sperm competitionstudies.  相似文献

The New Zealand stitchbird or hihi Notiomystis cincta is unique in that it has two distinct mating positions, in addition to the male standing on the female's back, as is seen in all other birds, it also copulates face‐to‐face. In this study, 43 male stitchbirds first attracted a female to their territory and supplemented their within‐pair matings by intruding into other territories and attempting forced copulations – often resulting in high levels of female harassment. I recorded the temporal variation of both attempted and successful copulations relative to the female's fertile period in order to understand the function of copulation variation in this species. Each of 105 observed copulations were classified according to whether they were: (1) within‐pair or extra‐pair, (2) forced or unforced, and (3) face‐to‐face or standing. Two copulation categories ‘within‐pair unforced standing’ (50%) and ‘extra‐pair forced face‐to‐face’ (27%) accounted for the majority of all observed copulations, and this supported the previous categorisation of face‐to‐face copulation being forced by extra‐pair males in this species. However, in 10% of copulations the female conceded to copulate with an extra‐pair male in a standing position while displaying only subtle signs of resistance, thus, female stitchbirds may show convenience polyandry when the costs of resistance are high. The peak in copulation frequency centred on two days prior to the laying of the first egg and occurred within a period of six days before and seven days after the first egg was laid. Unsuccessful extra‐pair forced copulation attempts closely followed the distribution of all copulations. Male age and morphometrics did not predict whether a female would resist or accept extra‐pair copulation attempts, and female resistance did not appear to depend on male quality. Despite the current trend focussing on female fitness benefits associated with EPCs, it appears that male stitchbirds gain EPCs through forced copulation and females gain no apparent benefit.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to clarify the relationship between female sexual receptivity and male copula guarding inI. senegalensis, a species that copulates for several hours. In insectaries, most copulations were initiated early in the morning, and terminated relatively synchronously between 11 00 and 13 00. Females refused males with wing-flutter display and oviposited alone in the afternoon regardless of copulation events of that morning. Females could sexually receive males only in the morning. Males copulated for several hours until 12 00 after which females could oviposit. To determine whether copulations that last for hours function as male copula guarding or only of sperm displacement, emerged males were kept at various densities and permitted to copulate with virgin and mated females in insectaries. Both with virgin and mated females, “social” (not solitary; 2–4 males / insectary) males initiated copulations early in the morning and always terminated at around 12 00. However, both with virgin and mated females, solitary (one male / insectary) males terminated copulations in the morning. In both cases, duration of copulations did not significantly differ for virgin females and mated females. Therefore, long (several hour) copulation is more likely to function as male copula guarding than as sperm displacement, and duration of copulations is predicted to be shortened when male density is very low.  相似文献
