Forest responses to the large-scale east coast fires in Korea   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The east coast forest fires of April 2000 were Koreas largest recorded fires. This, along with the fact that they took place in the region most frequently affected by fire, attracted a great deal of attention. Due to the variations in wind, topography and pre-fire forest stands, a heterogeneous landscape mosaic of burn severity was created across the region. It turned out to be an excellent opportunity to study various landscape-scale impacts of fires on forest dynamics. Therefore, we investigated stands in the 23794ha of burned forest region, in terms of burn severity, vegetation regeneration and forested landscape change as a measure of community stability. Using the geographic information system technique, we analyzed the differential severity and post-fire recovery of pre-fire forest types of different stand age both at stand and species level. Analysis showed that pre-fire vegetation was composed of mainly pine (Pinus densiflora) stands that occupied 70% of the whole forested area, while pine-hardwood and hardwood stands occupied only 28% and 3%, respectively. In addition, two-thirds of all stands were less than 30-years-old. Pine stands were the most severely burned, while conversely pine-hardwood and hardwood stands were less vulnerable. This implied that pine forests had fire-prone characteristics. Vegetation recovery went the opposite way; that is, the regenerating vegetation cover was 71% at pre-fire hardwood stands, and 65% and 53% at pine-hardwood and pine stands, respectively. However, these recovery rates were strikingly fast, considering that investigation took place about 3months after the fires. Fire did not initiate successional processes, but tended to accelerate the predicted successional changes by releasing pre-fire understory species that survived the fires and regenerated by sprouting. The dominant pre-fire tree species (P. densiflora) was susceptible to fire and not resilient enough to reestablish in competition with oak species. Contrary to pines, the abilities of oak species, mainly Quercus mongolica and Q. variabilis, to survive fires and to resprout vigorously made them dominant at most post-fire stands. These shifts in species abundance caused drastic changes to the landscape: from pine-dominated to oak-dominated stands without any notable change in species composition. The patterns in forest regeneration that we observed in Korea may be representative of forest responses to any long-term repeated disturbances, including fire.  相似文献

Microbial processes were investigated in the soil of a declining, more eutrophic (Romberk West) and a healthy looking, less eutrophic (Romberk East) freshwater reed stand. Soil was sampled monthly from June to September 1997. Glucose induced carbon dioxide (CO2) production in oxic and anoxic conditions, methane (CH4) production, nitrification and denitrification activities were measured in laboratory conditions in suspensions prepared from homogenised soil samples. Within a stand the proportion of anaerobic (as opposed to aerobic) microbial activity was greatest in June. Potential methanogenesis was highest in June and decreased later in both stands. Methane production was approximately the same in June at both stands but it was higher at Romberk East than at Romberk West stand in later months. Denitrifying activity was higher in August than July at both stands. Nitrifying activity was undetectable at both stands over the entire study period. Generally Romberk West was more anaerobic than Romberk East, with lower redox potential, higher amounts of oxygen-consuming organic matter and a lower ratio of CO2 production in oxic conditions to CO2 production in anoxic conditions. Microbial activity was apparently restricted at Romberk West stand in comparison to Romberk East. The shift from aerobic to anaerobic microbial metabolism and a coinciding restriction of metabolic activities at Romberk West are thought to be indicative of a strengthened oxygen stress in the soil, associated with accumulation of metabolites toxic to both the microorganisms and the reed. Possible links between eutrophication, microbial characteristics and reed performance are discussed.  相似文献

Simulations representing tree locations on a rectangular grid (cellular automaton) imply that spatial patterns associated with fire, seed dispersal, and the distributions of plants and resources affect forest dynamics profoundly. Simulated fires ignited at random locations in a uniform environment create non-uniform habitats and lead to patches dominated by different vegetation types. Short-range seed dispersal promotes vegetation clumping; fires cause these clumps to coalesce into vegetation zones separated by sharp borders, especially across an environmental gradient. In simulation of competition within vegetation mosaics, tree populations with a competitive advantage still require the intervention of fire to eliminate rivals. Also, the availability of local seed sources enables established tree populations to exclude invaders, but fires can trigger sudden changes in the composition of such systems. In models of simple succession systems, climax vegetation tends to displace pioneer vegetation, even under harsh fire regimes.  相似文献

In the Netherlands and adjacent countries on old (non-holocene) soils the relation was studied between high forest dominated by Fagus sylvatica, and coppice derived from it, with Quercus spp. and Betula spp. or Carpinus betulus. From place-names a shift Fagus > Quercus > Betula is found, caused by cutting and coppicing. An analysis of relevés of the vegetation yielded more detailed information.The occurrence and rejuvenation of Fagus and other climax tree species decrease, while most other trees and shrubs show an increase. The mean total number of species in 1396 relevés increases from 22.0 to 24.4. Decreasing species include widely distributed species as well as character species. Increasing species include shrubs, woodedge species of heathland or limestone grassland, and nitrophilous species.The light-indication according to Ellenberg increases considerably, most of all in the types on poor soils. Moisture seems hardly involved, but pH-indication is divergent: decreasing in acid types, increasing in alkaline types. For the latter erosion is held responsible. N-indication follows the same trend. All ecological shifts remain within the framework of each association concerned.The Sørensen index for floristic composition shows a mean of 68% correlation, of the same order as variants within one association. The ecological correlation is even higher. So coppice can be considered as management variants, not deserving an association status, as often was given in the past.  相似文献

The effects of different management practices (mainly mowing, grazing, nutrient enrichment) on floodplain vegetation were compared between the Austrian and Czech part of the Lunice River floodplain using nitrophilous vegetation with Urtica dioica. The vegetation samples situated on crosswise transects (40 in total) were used for the analysis of vegetation. Correlations between the floodplain width on these transects and the proportions (expressed as percentage of the total floodplain width) of selected characteristics (Urtica dioica and Phalaris arundinacea stands and managed areas) were not statistically significant. Differences in the proportions of selected characteristics between the two parts of the floodplain were not significant either, except differences in the proportion of managed areas and species richness (higher species richness and proportion of managed areas are in the Austrian part of the floodplain). The different environmental variables were used in ordinations (DCA and CCA) of vegetation samples. In the DCA, four groups of samples were interpreted. In the CCA changes the moisture gradient was the most important one. The transect distance (from the first transect in Austria) and the soil moisture had the closest relationship to the species data.  相似文献

The conserved residue Thr42 of -subunit of the chloroplast ATP synthase of maize (Zea mays L.) was substituted with Cys, Arg, and Ile, respectively, through site-directed mutagenesis. The over-expressed and refolded -proteins were purified by chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and FPLC on mono-Q column, which were as biologically active (inhibiting Ca2+-ATPase activity and blocking proton gate) as the native subunit isolated from chloroplasts. The T42C and T42R showed higher inhibitory activities on the soluble CF1(–) Ca2+-ATPase than the WT. The T42I inhibited the Ca2+-ATPase activity of soluble CF1 and restored photophosphorylation activity of membrane-bound CF1 deficient in the most efficiently. Far-ultraviolet CD spectra showed that the portions of -helix and -sheet structures of the three mutants were somewhat different from WT. Thus the conserved residue Thr42 may be important for maintaining the structure and function of the -subunit and the basic functions of the -subunit as far as an inhibitor of Ca2+-ATPase and the proton gate are related.  相似文献

The main focus of the study was to find out whether and how the forestry management in the Biaowiea Forest has influenced the mosaic diversity of field layer vegetation and habitat heterogeneity in the temperate hard wood forest (Tilio-Carpinetum). Five belt-transects represent natural and semi-natural old-growths in Biaowiea National Park (BNP), the commercial forest (CF), and secondary stands in the CF. Along the transects, distinct patches of field layer vegetation were identified and delimited, and their species composition was assessed. Along central lines of the transects the environmental data was collected from sample points established at regular intervals: soil pH and the distances to the 4 closest trees, their species, and dbh (diameter at the breast height=135 cm). The group of patches (on average 50 per transect) was subjected to the dichotomous classification in order to identify a number of characteristic types of microphytocoenoses – synusiae. Beta-diversity of the vegetation was expressed with the Simpson diversity index calculated on the basis of areas occupied by synusiae. The most structurally diversified were the transects representing natural old-growths in the BNP. A calculation of similarity coefficients between the transects on the basis of their mosaic composition displayed sharper differences between old-growth and secondary communities in summer than those found in spring. Forestry management has seriously modified the tree species composition in two studied stands, through planting oak or initiating succession. This resulted, both in plantation and pioneer stand, in loss of the main components of natural old-growths: hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), Norway spruce (Picea abies), lime (Tilia cordata) and maple (Acer platanoides). Significantly a wider range of soil pH values in natural old-growths coincided with a higher diversity of herbaceous mosaics comparing to secondary stands. The elimination of spruce (the species being most commonly blown down, projecting an acid canopy shadow) in two studied areas, elimination of dead wood, and destruction of humus layers through ploughing, could contribute to a reduction of specific microenvironments. A lower mosaic diversity of secondary stands coinciding with the unification of environmental conditions along the transects may indicate that forestry management can lead to the disappearance of a highly structural character in natural forest communities.Nomenclature: Flora europaea; Sokoowski (1993).  相似文献

The dynamics of coupled biological oscillators can be modeled by averaging the effects of coupling over each oscillatory cycle so that the coupling depends on the phase difference between the two oscillators and not on their specific states. Average phase difference theory claims that mode locking phenomena can be predicted by the average effects of the coupling influences. As a starting point for both empirical and theoretical investigations, Rand et al. (1988) have proposed d/dt= — K sin ), with phase-locked solutions =arcsin( /K), where is the difference between the uncoupled frequencies and K is the coupling strength. Phase-locking was evaluated in three experiments using an interlimb coordination paradigm in which a person oscillates hand-held pendulums. was controlled through length differences in the left and right pendulums. The coupled frequency c was varied by a metronome, and scaled to the eigenfrequency v of the coupled system K was assumed to vary inversely with c. The results indicate that: (1) and K contribute multiplicatively to (2) =0 or = regardless of K when =0; (3) 0 or regardless of when K is large (relative to ); (4) results (1) to (3) hold identically for both in phase and antiphase coordination. The results also indicate that the relevant frequency is c/v rather than c. Discussion high-lighted the significance of confirming =arcsin(/K) for more general treatments of phase-locking, such as circle map dynamics, and for the 11 phase-entrainment which characterizes biological movement systems.  相似文献

Summary Rates of degradation of alder, oak and grass leaf packs with associated microbial populations were measured in seven streams pH 6.8–4.9. Streams were chosen from upland and lowland sites of the same river for contrasts in pH, water chemistry and riparian vegetation. The most important factor governing rates of degradation is the physical and chemical nature of the leaf material. At pH 6.8 rates of degradation, k, and microbial colonization were higher than at pH 5.5: k on alder x6; on oak x2; on grass x2. At lowland sites, pH 6.8, higher decay rates were associated with high levels of microbial colonization including c.14 spp of aquatic hyphomycete fungi—regardless of riparian vegetation. Decay rates were similar at upland sites, pH 6.8 and 6.6, involving high levels of colonization by fewer fungal species and fewer bacteria—regardless of riparian vegetation-though grass was barely degraded at upland sites of any pH. At pH 5.5, slow decay rates were associated with low levels of microbial colonization and few fungal species. Largest microbial populations at low pH associated with riparian trees did not lead to markedly increased decay rates. Factors of water chemistry at low pH appear to inhibit microbial metabolism. The implications of these findings for stream invertebrates active in the winter is discussed.  相似文献

Summary On t.l.c. plates 125I-cholera toxin binds to a disialoganglioside tentatively identified as GDlb with about 10 times less capacity than to ganglioside GM1. Binding of labeled toxin to both gangliosides was abolished in presence of excess amounts of unlabeled B subunit. Ganglioside extracts from human or pig intestinal mucosa showed toxin binding to gangliosides GM1 and GD1b. Summary Suspensions of endocrine pancreas cells were prepared by shaking collagenase-isolated rat islets of Langerhans in calcium-free buffer. When incubated with 1.0 mM substrate at pH 7.4, the cells split,P i from 5-AMP at a rate of 87 nmol/h per g DNA, and from-glycerophosphate at a rate of 25 nmol/h per g DNAK m for 5 AMP was about 54 M. Adenosine or theophylline inhibited the 5-AMP hydrolysis. Homogenization of the cells increased the activity toward 5-AMP by 23% and that toward-glycerophosphate by 115%. Injecting rats with cortisone had no effect on the 5-AMP hydrolysis by whole cells but significantly increased the activity in cell homogenates; the intracellular activity toward 5-AMP was more than doubled by the cortisone treatment. Staining whole islet cells for 5-AMP-splitting activity resulted in a demarcation of the cell periphery in control rats. Cells from cortisone-treated rats showed heavier deposits of reaction product, and their cell periphery did not stand out as clearly. It is suggested that 5-nucleotidase is largely an ectoenzyme in normal rat islet cells. The cells also contain an as yet unidentified intracellular phosphatase that seems to be solely responsible for the increased hydrolysis of 5-AMP in cortisone-treated rats.  相似文献

Summary Detailed restriction enzyme analysis of the DNA from a Chinese female showed that one of her chromosomes had a >17.5 kb deletion of DNA, including the , 2, and 1 globin genes, which is present in many Southeast Asians with an -thalassemia-1 chromosome. Her normal chromosome had the expected cluster of -like globin genes (5----2-1-3), but the segment of DNA between the two globin genes was elongated by some 0.5–0.7 kb. Analyses of various restriction sites suggested that this normal variant of the human globin gene complex is due to a crossover between a normal chromosome with () and a chromosome with an -thalassemia-2 (–3.7) and an -21-hybrid gene.  相似文献

Summary One hundred and twenty-two varieties, lines and wild accessions of Lycopersicon were screened under three different regimes during the autumn/winter season of 1982–83 and 1983–84 for resistance to tomato leaf curl virus (TLCV). L. hirsutum f. glabratum (B6013) and L. hirsutum f. typicum (A1904) proved to be highly resistant to TLCV in all three environments. Various accessions of L. peruvianum were also highly resistant. L. pimpinellifolium (A1921) exhibited no TLCV symptoms within 90 days. Of the cultivated varieties, Acc 99 exhibited the minimim score for susceptibility; AC 142, Collection No. 2, Kalyanpur Angurlata and HS 101 had a low rating for virus incidence. The inheritance of resistance was studied in the interspecific crosses between a TLCV resistant line of L. pimpinellifolium (A1921) and five (HS 101, HS 102, HS 110, Pusa Ruby and Punjab Chhuhara) susceptible cultivars of L. esculentum. Parents, F1, F2 and backcross progenies were artificially inoculated with local strains of TLCV using vector the viruliferious whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.). Data indicated that the resistance of L. pimpinellifolium (A 1921) is monogenic and incompletely dominant over susceptibility.  相似文献

Summary The self-condensation of 2(3)-O-glycyl esters of adenosine, adenosine-5-(O-methylphosphate) and P1, P2-diadenosine-5-pyrophosphate in 6.2 mM solutions at pH 8.0 and -5°C in the presence of 12.5 mM poly(U) yields approximately 3 times as much diketopiperazine as reactions without poly(U). As the concentration of 2(3)-O-(glycyl)-P1, P2-diadenosine-5-pyrophosphate is decreased from 6.2 mM to 1.5 mM the yield of diketopiperazine in the presence of poly(U) decreases slightly from 6.6% to 5.2%, whereas, in the absence of poly(U) the yield of diketopiperazine decreases substantially from 2.4% to 0.75%. The enhanced yield of diketopiperazine that is attributed to the template action of poly(U) is temperature dependent and is observed only at temperatures below 10°C (5°C to -5°C) for 6.2 mM 2(3)-O-(glycyl)-adenosine-5-(O-methylphosphate) and below 23°C (15°C to -5°C) for 6.2 mM 2(3)-O-(glycyl)-P1, P2-diadenosine-5-pyrophosphate. The absence of a template effect at high temperatures is attributed to the melting of the organized helices. The hydrolysis half-lives at pH 8.0 and -5°C of 2(3)-O-(glycyl)-adenosine, 2(3)-O-(glycyl)-adenosine-5-(O-methylphosphate), 2(3)-O-(glycyl)-P1, P2-diadenosine-5-pyrophosphate, and 5-O-(glycyl)-adenosine in the presence of poly(U) are substantially larger than their half-lives in the absence of poly(U). sThe hydrolysis of several esters catalyzed by lipase of Candida rugosa was used to analyse the interaction between the ester substrate and the active site and the geometry and steric restrictions of alk, ar and h subsites. Using 4-R-C H -CH(R)-COOEt and ethyl trans-cinnamate, the presence of a low electronic density zone in the ar pocket is described, the dimensions of the pocket produced by Phe-296 and Leu-297 in the alk subsite and the size of the h subsite are described.  相似文献

Changes in vegetation under reduced control measures over 3 to 5 years in watercourses in a rural environment in The Netherlands were evaluated. A method to deal with slow changes on a steep gradient is presented. The gradient with various vegetation types between the middle of the watercourse and the bank-top was split up into zones. Species composition of each zone was evaluated using literature on syntaxonomy. Cover of character species, multiplied by the width of the zones, was used to quantify the contribution of various syntaxa in the vegetation. Changes in these contribution data were used to evaluate changes over the years. The method was applied to two experiments in which cleaning frequency was reduced. Submerged vegetation of Callitriche-Ranunculetum penicillati in one and of Potamogetonetalia pectinati in the other case, hardly changed. Emergent vegetation of Nasturtio-Glycerietalia or Sparganio-Glycerietum fluitans tended to expand into the submerged zone. Bank vegetation began to show signs of development into ruderal vegetation, as a shift from Molinio-Arrhenatheretea into Artemisietea was detected. The method allowed the conclusion that conditions were too eutrophic in both experiments for a diverse brook vegetation development without additional habitat improvement.  相似文献

Summary An epidermolytic toxin target was observed in keratohyalin granules of sectioned epidermis by a direct fluorescence procedure using FTC-toxin, but not by an indirect procedure using sequential reaction with toxin, anti-toxin and FTC-secondary antibody. The investigation of the two procedures was extended to keratinocytes. A dispase digestion procedure yielded three fractions which corresponded to basal, spinous and granular cells according to biochemical and morphological criteria. It was shown that the direct and indirect procedures both detected the toxin target in the keratohyalin granules of granular cells, but that the indirect procedure was very insensitive. In control experiments, the profilaggrin of keratohyalin granules was detected readily in cells by a direct procedure using FTC-antiprofilaggrin but only weakly by an indirect double antibody procedure. Insensitivity to indirect procedures thus appears to be a particular property of the keratohyalin granule site. It was shown that the toxin target was readily accessible in permeable (trypsin-isolated) granular cells but inaccessible in impermeable (dispase-isolated) cells.  相似文献

Doubled haploid (DH) progeny from a cross between the scald susceptible barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar Ingrid and the resistant accession CI 11549 (Nigrinudum) was evaluated for resistance in the pathogen Rhynchosporium secalis (Oudem) J.J. Davis. Two linked and incompletely dominant loci confer resistance CI 11549 against isolate 4004. One is an allele at the complex Rrs1 locus on chromosome 3H close to the centromere; the other is located 22 cM distally on the long arm. The latter locus is designated Rrs4. In BC3-lines into Ingrid from CI 2222 (another Nigrinudum) resistance seems governed by one locus close to the telomeric region of chromosome 7H, probably allelic to Rrs2. In neither case did we find any trace of the recessive gene rh8 reported to be present in Nigrinudum. Various resistance donors of Ethiopian origin designated as Nigrinudum, Jet or Abyssinian were identical to a great extent with respect to markers, but differed in resistance to different isolates of scald or in barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) resistance. The implications for their use as differentials in scald tests and screening of germplasm collections are discussed.  相似文献

The cleavage of adenosine-5-monophosphate (5-AMP) and guanosine-5-monophosphate (5-GMP) by Ce4+ and lanthanide complex of 2-carboxyethylgermanium sesquioxide (Ge-132) in acidic and near neutral conditions was investigated by NMR , HPLC and measuring the liberated inorganic phosphate at 37°C and 50°C. The results showed that 5-GMP and 5-AMP was converted to guanine (G), 5-monophosphate (depurination of 5-GMP), ribose (depurination and dephosphorylation of 5-GMP), phosphate and adenine (A), 5-monophosphate (depurination of 5-AMP), ribose (depurination and dephosphorylation of 5-AMP), phosphate respectively by Ce4+. In presence of lanthanide complexes, 5-GMP and 5-AMP were converted to guanosine (Guo) and phosphate and adenosine (Ado) and phosphate respectively. This paper aims to achieve insight into various ecological theories in the Netherlands which have different, and sometimes opposing, views on the conservation of nature. Interviews, publications and archival research brought to light four separate theories: vitalistic/holistic, dynamic, cybernetic and chaos. Diversity is reached through stability according to vitalistic/holistic and cybernetic theories, but through change and instablility according to the dynamic and chaos theories. These two groups are working apart, and continue to have their own ideas. Prediction of the future is only possible with the vitalistic/holistic and cybernetic theories. Ecologists who adhere to these theories feel responsible and able in different ways to change ecological nature towards desirable end goals. The other two theories, dynamic and chaos, appear to be less activist.  相似文献
