To examine the changes in secretion of growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) with reference to their osmoregulatory roles, changes in pituitary mRNA levels and plasma concentrations of these hormones were examined during seawater adaptation in silvery juveniles (smolts) and precociously mature males (dark parr) of amago salmon (Oncorhynchus rhodurus). Transfer to seawater increased plasma sodium levels in both smolts and dark parr. Smolts adjusted their plasma sodium to the level associated with seawater-adaptation (165 mEq/liter) within 3 days, whereas no adjustment was seen in dark parr; the latter failed to survive in seawater for more than 3 days. In smolts, plasma GH levels increased significantly 1 day after transfer, whereas there was no significant change in dark parr. An increase in GH mRNA levels was observed in smolts in association with increased plasma GH, whereas there was no change in dark parr. In contrast, a reduction in plasma PRL levels was consistently observed in both smolts and dark parr after transfer to seawater. However, there was no significant change in PRL mRNA levels in either smolts or dark parr. These results suggest that both gene expression and release of GH are activated by seawater transfer only in smolts with adequate seawater adaptability, whereas PRL gene expression is decreased after seawater transfer regardless of seawater adaptability.  相似文献

As wild primate populations decline, numbers of orphaned primates, sanctuaries, and attempts to release primates back to the natural environment increase. Release projects frequently are poorly documented despite IUCN guidelines recommending post-release monitoring and systematic data collection as central to the process. Since 1996, Habitat Ecologique et Liberté des Primates (HELP) has been releasing wild-born orphaned chimpanzees into natural habitat in the Conkouati-Douli National Park, Republic of Congo. HELP developed a post-release monitoring system as an integral component. We present activity budgets and diet of released chimpanzees, and compared them to those of wild chimpanzee, as primary indicators of successful release. Feeding, moving, and resting dominated activity budgets, reflecting the overall patterns in wild populations. Diet was diverse and dominated by fruit, and the released chimpanzees showed specialization on a smaller number of species, as in many wild communities. The high survival rates of the chimpanzees and overall success of the release program are attributed to careful planning and post-release support facilitated via the monitoring process. Systematic post-release data collection monitoring has confirmed that wild-born chimpanzees can adjust behaviorally and nutritionally to the wild. Survival statistics of the reintroduced chimpanzees—confirmed 56%, possible 88%— reflect the behavioral adaptability.2nd revision March 11, 2005An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Eighty coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch smolts (40 wild and 40 hatchery-reared) were surgically implanted with acoustic transmitters and released into the Quinsam River over 2 days. Differences in physiology, travel time and migratory behaviour were examined between wild and hatchery-reared fish. In addition, tagged and control fish of both wild and hatchery-reared stock were raised for 3 months following surgery to compare survival and tag retention. Detection ranges of the acoustic receivers were tested in the river, estuary and ocean in a variety of flow conditions and tide levels. Receivers were placed in the river, estuary and up to 50 km north and south from the river mouth in the marine environment. Wild smolts were significantly smaller by mass, fork length and condition factor than hatchery-reared smolts and exhibited significantly higher levels of sodium, potassium and chloride in their blood plasma than hatchery-reared smolts. The gill Na+K+-ATPase activity was also significantly higher in the wild coho smolts at the time of release. Ninety-eight per cent of wild and 80% of hatchery-reared fish survived to the estuary, 8 km downstream of the release site. No difference was found in migration speed, timing or survival between smolts released during daylight and those released after dark. Wild smolts, however, spent less time in the river and estuary, and as a result entered the ocean earlier than hatchery-reared smolts. Average marine swimming speeds for wild smolts were double those of their hatchery-reared counterparts. While hatchery smolts dispersed in both a northward and southward direction upon entering the marine environment, the majority of wild smolts travelled north from the Campbell River estuary. The wild coho salmon smolts were more physiologically fit and ready to enter sea water than the hatchery-reared smolts, and as a result had higher early survival rates and swimming speeds.  相似文献

The effects of structural enrichment in the hatchery rearing environment of brown trout Salmo trutta was linked to post-release performance. Enrichment resulted in reduced swimming activity scored in an open field test and reduced movement in a natural river after release. Also, enrichment increased resting metabolic rates, which correlated positively with overwinter growth.  相似文献

The feeding and growth of hatchery-reared (HR) Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus of c. 100 mm total length (L(T) ) released off the coast of Fukushima, Japan, were investigated. From 2 to 15 days after release, the HR P. olivaceus frequently exhibited high empty-stomach frequency (>40%), low stomach-content mass (<1% of body mass), reduced somatic condition from release (c.-10%) and negligible growth. Thereafter, empty-stomach frequency decreased, the stomach-content mass of HR fish increased to 2-8% of body mass, the somatic condition recovered and growth rate increased to 0·5-1·5 mm day(-1) . Prey items were initially mysids, shifting thereafter to fishes such as the Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonica, as observed similarly in wild counterparts. The proportion of mysids decreased with time after release irrespective of size at release, indicating the importance of mysids for adaptation to natural food. Recapture rates at age 1 year, derived from fish market surveys, varied greatly among release years (4-11%). The variation in the recapture rates was largely accounted for by the post-release growth rates (r(2) = 0·5), suggesting a relationship between the post-release growth of HR fish and their survival and subsequent stocking effectiveness.  相似文献

Arteriosclerosis in Oncorhynchur mykiss has been examined histologically in parr, smolts, spawning adults and post-spawning adults captured during downstream migration. All stages of fish from the Clearwater River in Idaho are characterized by the presence of lesions in the main vessel on the bulbus arteriosus. The incidence is lowest in parr, increases significantly in smolts, and is present in 100% of spawning fish. Regression of lesions was not observed in either hatchery or wild fish after spawning.  相似文献

Headstarting involves ex situ rearing of vulnerable life stages, then releasing individuals into the wild once they are larger and less vulnerable to predation. Sometimes, headstarted animals display underdeveloped behaviors that may lead to an acclimation period of reduced survival and growth after release. Using data from a 6-year headstarting program, we tested whether the early release condition affected survival, body condition, and somatic growth rate in 2 groups of headstarted Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) released into Rouge National Urban Park (RNUP) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The first group included turtles released directly into the wild (i.e., hard release). The second group included turtles released into an in situ enclosure in which individuals remained for a week without food supplementation before being fully released into the wild (i.e., delayed release). Release condition did not affect survival or growth rate. In the delayed-release group, body condition initially declined rapidly and remained low for up to 1 year after release. Given the lack of wild juveniles in RNUP, we compared body condition of headstarted turtles at various time points since release to similar-sized wild juveniles from 2 other Ontario populations, one from Algonquin Provincial Park (APP) and one near Lake Erie (LE). Body condition of headstarted turtles was similar to those of wild APP turtles regardless of release method, and higher than those of wild LE turtles. Our results indicate that delayed release did not improve post-release outcomes for headstarted turtles in an urban landscape and headstarted turtles sustain similar health metrics as wild turtles.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to examine the responses of three Atlantic salmon Salmo salar strains to growth hormone (GH) treatment. A positive growth response to sustained-release GH implants was found in two wild strains (Namsen and Imsa) as well as one domesticated strain (AquaGen). The data revealed that the growth-selected AquaGen strain has further growth potential, however, a stronger growth response was observed in the wild strains which outgrew the domesticated strain after GH treatment. These observations suggest that some growth potential may have been lost during the selection for rapid growth in the AquaGen strain. In September, the parr were GH implanted and in December sampled for plasma GH and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) levels, liver, muscle and gill GH receptor, IGF-I mRNA levels, gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity, muscle and liver lipid content and body silvering. Low temperature and seasonal growth cessation probably explains the relatively limited GH effects found. Body silvering in all strains was positively correlated to size. GH increased IGF-I plasma levels in the Namsen strain inspite of liver IGF-I mRNA levels being lower in GH-treated fish.  相似文献

Hatchery‐reared brown trout Salmo trutta stocked in a natural stream in addition to resident wild brown trout grew more slowly than those stocked with an experimentally reduced density of brown wild trout. In both cases, hatchery‐reared brown trout grew more slowly than resident wild fish in control sections. Mortality and movements did not differ among the three categories of fish. The results showed that growth of stocked hatchery‐reared brown trout parr was density‐dependent, most likely as a consequence of increased competition. Thus, supplementary release of hatchery‐reared fish did not necessarily increase biomass.  相似文献

Hatchery reared 0+ year brown trout Salmo trutta , with 51 mm mean L T, were released in a sea trout stream in June 1991 to compare the survival of wild and introduced trout during the freshwater stage from age 0+ to 2+ years. The introduced brown trout were homozygous for a genetic marker, enabling released individuals and their offspring to be distinguished phenotypically from the local sea trout. The mean size of 0+ and 1+ year introduced parr was larger than 0+ and 1+ year wild parr, while 2+ year parr of both groups were of the same size. Half year survival rates of both introduced and wild parr increased with size up to c . 80 mm (1+ years), but then decreased, and could be described by a polynomial regression function, with the same shape for both groups. The introduced parr had, however, a significant lower survival rate than the wild parr. The number of the introduced cohort decreased from 2200 at release in 1991 to c . 20 in March 1994 ( c . 1% of the original number). Between 1994 and 2000 no introduced individuals or offspring have been observed in the study area. High mortality at the parr stage and additional mortality until the spawning, give a low probability for a genetic impact on the local population as long as releases are restricted, both in time and number of fish.  相似文献

To elucidate possible mechanisms behind the endocrine control of parr–smolt transformation, the daily plasma profiles in thyroid hormones (TH; free thyroxine (FT4), total thyroxine (TT4), and total 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (TT3)), growth hormone (GH) and cortisol were studied in Atlantic salmon parr and smolts under simulated-natural winter (8 L:16D) and spring (16.5 L:7.5D) photoperiods, respectively. Overall, TT4, TT3 and GH levels were higher in smolts than in parr, whereas FT4 levels fluctuated within the same range in parr and smolts. Significant diurnal changes in plasma TH were present in parr. Both FT4 and TT4 levels increased during the photophase and decreased during the scotophase, while TT3 levels followed an inverse pattern. Growth hormone showed no significant changes in parr. Changes in FT4, TT4, GH, and cortisol, but not TT3, levels, were observed in smolts with peak levels during both the photophase and scotophase for FT4, TT4 and GH. Plasma cortisol was not assayed in parr but in smolts the peaks were associated with dusk and dawn. In addition to the general increases in TH, GH and cortisol, the distinct endocrine differences in nighttime levels between parr in the winter and smolts in the spring suggest different interactions between TH, GH, cortisol and melatonin at these different time points. These spring scotophase endocrine profiles may represent synergistic hormone interactions that promote smolt development, similar to the synergistic endocrine interactions shown to accelerate anuran metamorphosis. The variations in these diurnal rhythms between parr and smolts may represent part of the endocrine mechanism for the translation of seasonal information during salmon smoltification.  相似文献

There are situations in which adult female rats release increased amounts of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) independent of increased luteinizing hormone (LH) release. This results from, at least in part, a selective increase in the basal FSH release rate. We investigated whether an increase in the basal FSH release rate is contributory to the rise in serum FSH levels which occurs independent of a rise in serum LH levels in the immature female rat. Rats had high serum FSH concentrations on days 7 and 15 after birth, low serum FSH levels on day 23, and low serum LH levels on all three days. In contrast, anterior pituitary gland (APG) FSH and LH concentrations and contents increased from day 7 to day 15 and the contents increased further from day 15 to day 23. Similarly, basal FSH and LH release rates per mg APG or per APG, as assessed by measurement of FSH and LH released into culture medium containing APG(s) from different aged rats, increased from day 7 to day 15 but did not increase further between days 15 and 23. The results indicate that unlike situations observed to date in adult female rats, a mechanism(s) other than an increase in the basal FSH release rate is involved in selective FSH release in the immature female rat.  相似文献

Primary cell cultures were prepared from fetal, neonatal and adult rat pituitaries and evaluated for their ability to secrete growth hormone (GH) in response to growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF). Pituitary cells prepared from fetuses at days 19 and 21 of gestation, neonatal animals at the day of birth (day 0) or the following day (day 1) and peripubertal male rats showed full dose response curves to GRF with maximal GH release when stimulated with 1 X 10(-10) M rat GRF. At this concentration of GRF, the amount of GH released was not different from that elicited by activation of adenylate cyclase with 1 X 10(-5) M forskolin. In contradistinction, a preparation of cells from fetuses at day 18 of gestation did not show the same release of GH when challenged with 1 X 10(-10) M GRF and forskolin (0.057 +/- 0.001, compared to 0.076 +/- 0.003 micrograms/10(5) cells per 4.5 h), although the cells clearly responded to both secretagogues (basal levels of GH, 0.029 +/- 0.002 micrograms/10(5) cells per 4.5 h). While cells prepared from fetuses at day 21 of gestation or from animals after birth released 5-10% of their total cellular GH content, those prepared from 18- and 19-day fetuses released as much as 40% of their total GH suggesting there is a maturation of intracellular GH processing that occurs late in gestation. The results show that, in late pregnancy, the rat fetal pituitary is highly responsive to growth hormone-releasing factor and suggest that this peptide participates in regulating GH levels during the perinatal period.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon straying from the River Imsa   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Mean estimated straying rate for Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. leaving the River Imsa as smolts during 1976–1999 was 15% for hatchery fish and 6% for wild conspecifics. Hatchery Atlantic salmon selected for production traits during four or more generations strayed >50%. The straying rate was higher for Atlantic salmon staying 2 rather than 1 year at sea before attaining maturity. For spawning, 96% of the strays entered streams within 420 km from the River Imsa, and c . 80% entered streams within 60 km of the mouth of the River Imsa, whether the fish were wild or hatchery released. Within the 60 km zone, the number of strays caught in a river increased with the Atlantic salmon catch in that river, but there was no significant relationship between straying rate and water discharge or distance from the river to the River Imsa. The observed straying rate of hatchery Atlantic salmon decreased with increasing number of fish entering the River Imsa. Sexual maturation as parr did not influence the tendency to stray. The results suggest that the establishment of temporary zones, free of fish farms, outside important Atlantic salmon rivers by the fisheries authorities in Norway should be large, whole fjords, to be effective.  相似文献

In laboratory predation trials kinsen-gani crab Matuta lunaris rarely preyed on hatchery-reared (HR) Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus , even at extremely elevated prey densities ( c . 90 fish m−2), but fed readily on sacrificed Japanese founder. This suggests that under similar conditions in the wild predator-prey interactions between kinsen-gani and juvenile Japanese flounder are likely to be weak. Larger Japanese flounder readily cannibalized smaller conspecifics, suggesting that within-release group cannibalism may contribute considerably to post-release mortality of HR Japanese flounder when sufficient size variation exists within groups of released fish. Kinsen-gani presence had no effect on within-release group cannibalism rates of large Japanese flounder on small Japanese flounder. Within-release group cannibalism rates were significantly affected by densities of smaller (prey) fish, implying that the number of fish released (and thus post-release densities) in stock enhancement programmes may significantly affect post-release mortality rates. The probability of within-release group cannibalism increased rapidly as the cannibal-to-prey size ratio exceeded 1.6, suggesting that minimizing size variation of released HR individuals will reduce post-release cannibalism rates. These results have implications for Japanese flounder stock enhancement release strategies, and may be applicable to other finfish stock enhancement programmes.  相似文献

A mechanical technique was evaluated for releasing green lacewing eggs in liquid suspensions. Deposited eggs were enclosed within a circle of nonpoisonous adhesive to protect them from predation and to prevent escape of hatched larvae. Released eggs were monitored daily for 5 days after release by measuring three response variables: adhesion rate of eggs to foliage, hatch rate of eggs, and “yield” of larvae from discharged eggs; “yield” was the product of egg adhesion and egg hatch. Factors tested were: egg conditioning prior to release (incubated or refrigerated), carrier (distilled water or commercial carrier solution), application technique (mechanical or hand application), and row facing (North or South). Release technique did not significantly effect egg hatch on any day. Conditioning eggs prior to release had the greatest effect on hatch of eggs and resulting yield of larvae during the 5-day monitoring period. Carrier had a significant effect on adhesion of eggs to leaves and hatch of eggs. Commercial carrier solution increased egg adhesion but decreased egg hatch compared to water. Overall mean yield of larvae from incubated eggs distributed mechanically was not significantly different for eggs suspended in water (36.4% on day 5 post-release) and for eggs suspended in commercial carrier solution (36.1% on day 5 post-release). Hand-applied eggs had a higher hatch and subsequent yield of larvae than mechanically released eggs; however, the hand technique was labor intensive.  相似文献

One‐year‐old and 1‐summer‐old salmon parr have been stocked in the Simojoki, a northern Baltic river, to protect the natural salmon stock from extinction. This enhancement practice was studied during a 5‐year stocking period, when an average of 14.3 1‐summer‐old parr and 5.4 1‐year‐old parr was needed to produce one sea running smolt. The mean yield from stocking was 70 smolts per 1000 stocked 1‐summer‐old parr and 186 smolts per 1000 stocked 1‐year‐old parr. The mean cost of smolts produced by stocking 1‐year‐old and 1‐summer‐old parr was 1.2 and 2.6 times the cost of producing one 50 g smolt in the hatchery, respectively. There was a negative relationship between density of wild parr and length of smolts stocked as 1‐summer‐old parr in the river, but no relationship between wild parr density and length of smolts stocked as 1‐year‐old parr. This indicated that 1‐summer‐old parr were more susceptible than the older parr to competition with wild parr. Considering production costs and smolt yield, stocking of 1‐year‐old parr appeared to be more profitable than that of 1‐summer‐old parr in the enhancement of the endangered salmon stock.  相似文献

Ghrelin, a novel growth-hormone-releasing acylated peptide, was recently isolated from rat stomach by the search of an endogenous ligand to an "orphan" G-protein-coupled-receptor. Ghrelin neuron is present in the arcuate nucleus of rat hypothalamus, but its central effect on growth hormone (GH) release has yet to be clarified. We determined the plasma GH concentration and GH mRNA level in the pituitary in response to central administration of ghrelin. A single intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of ghrelin to rats increased the plasma GH concentration dose-dependently. A continuous ICV administration of ghrelin via osmotic pump for 12 days increased the plasma GH concentration on day 6, but did not keep the high GH concentration on day 12. The GH mRNA levels in both groups of single and continuous administration of ghrelin were not significantly different from those of controls. A single administration of growth-hormone secretagogue also did not stimulate GH synthesis. Central ghrelin stimulated GH release but did not augment GH synthesis. In addition to gastric ghrelin, hypothalamic ghrelin functions to regulate GH release.  相似文献

The pattern of long-term GHRH administration capable of stimulating GH release without depleting pituitary GH content has been investigated using two experimental approaches. In experiment 1, recently weaned male lambs were treated for 3 weeks as follows: Group A) control; B) subcutaneous (sc) continuous infusion of GHRH (1200 mg/day) using a slow release pellet; C) the same as B plus 1 daily sc injection of long acting somatostatin (SS) (octreotide, 20 mg) ; D) 3 daily sc GHRH (250 mg) injections ; E) 2 daily sc injections of GHRH (250 mg) and 2 of natural SS (250 mg). In experiment 2, recently weaned male lambs were continuously GHRH-treated using sc osmotic minipumps (900 mg/day) alone or combined with a daily sc injection of octreotide (20 mg) for 4 weeks. Basal plasma GH levels were increased after chronic pulsatile GHRH treatment but not after any kind of continuous GHRH administration. This increment was maintained during the 3 weeks of experimentation and appeared accompanied by a pituitary GH content similar to controls. A marked GH response to the iv GHRH challenge was observed in controls and in lambs receiving both types of continuous sc GHRH infusions, whereas pulsatile sc GHRH-treated animals did not respond to the iv GHRH challenge in the first and second weeks of the study but did so in the third week of treatment. These data demonstrate that long-term pulsatile GHRH administration is capable of stimulating GH release in growing male lambs, without producing pituitary desensitization.  相似文献
