The objective of the present study was to propose cutoff points for the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS) through sensitivity and specificity analyses in order to identify excessive daytime sleepiness, considering parameters such as duration and quality of sleep, health perception, stress control and depressive moods (feelings of sadness) in adolescents. A total of 1,132 adolescents, aged 14–19 years old, of both sexes, from the public high school of São José – SC, answered the questionnaire with information on age, daytime sleepiness, sleep duration, health perception, stress management, depressive moods (feelings of sadness) and quality of sleep. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve was used to estimate cutoff points considering the sensitivity and specificity values ??that best identify adolescents with excessive daytime sleepiness, using independent variables as a reference. The majority of the sample was female (54.2%), aged 14–16 years. The girls presented worse quality of sleep (66.4%), and the boys had a more positive perception of health (74.8%), better stress control (64.8%) and lower depressive moods (feelings of sadness) (63.3%). The largest area in the ROC curve was the one that considered sleep quality as a parameter in both sexes (area of the curve = 0.709 and 0.659, respectively, for boys and girls, p < 0.001). Considering sleep quality as a reference, the cutoff point for excessive daytime sleepiness was 15 points. The other parameters used were also significant (p < 0.005). Poor sleep quality was the parameter most strongly related to daytime sleepiness, and a cutoff of 15 points for the PDSS for both sexes should be used in the definition of excessive daytime sleepiness. For the other parameters, stress management, depressive mood (feelings of sadness) and health perception, different cutoff points are suggested for boys and girls.  相似文献

To understand what governs the patterns of net ecosystem exchange of CO2, an understanding of factors influencing the component fluxes, ecosystem respiration and gross primary production is needed. In the present paper, we introduce an alternative method for estimating daytime ecosystem respiration based on whole ecosystem fluxes from a linear regression of photosynthetic photon flux density data vs. daytime net ecosystem exchange data at forest ecosystem level. This method is based on the principles of the Kok-method applied at leaf level for estimating daytime respiration. We demonstrate the method with field data and provide a discussion of the limitations of the method.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study examined the difference between athletes’ self-reported and objective sleep durations during two nap opportunities. Twelve well-trained male soccer players’ sleep durations were assessed using polysomnography and a self-report question during a 60- and 120-min nap opportunity. Participants underestimated sleep compared to objective sleep assessments for both the 60-min nap opportunity (p = 0.004) and 120-min nap opportunity (p = 0.001). Soccer players underestimated their sleep duration by approximately 10 min per hour of nap opportunity. It is yet to be determined if athletes are likely to underestimate sleep duration during their main nighttime sleep period.  相似文献

在人工气候室内以黄瓜穴盘苗为材料,测定不同昼温处理下(昼温分别为30℃、27℃、24℃、21℃、18℃、15℃,夜温均为15℃)黄瓜幼苗下胚轴长、下胚轴粗、第一叶片和第二叶片的长和宽、地上部和地下部干物质积累量、叶片含水率及叶片的叶绿素荧光特性,并用主成分分析法和聚类分析法对不同昼温处理下的黄瓜穴盘苗质量进行分析.结果表明:不同昼温处理下黄瓜穴盘苗各生长指标存在显著性差异,幼苗质量的昼温反应表现为24℃>21℃>27℃>30℃>18℃>15℃;通过主成分分析和系统聚类可以把各温度处理分为:最适温度处理(24℃/15℃)、适宜温度处理(21℃/15℃)和不适宜温度处理3类;不适宜温度处理又可分为高温抑制类(27C/15℃,30℃/15℃)和低温抑制类(15℃/15℃,18℃/15℃)2类.  相似文献

Skin temperature shows spontaneous ultradian fluctuations during everyday-life wakefulness. Previous work showed that mild manipulations of skin temperature affect human sleep and vigilance, presumably by influencing neuronal systems involved in both thermal sensing and arousal regulation. We therefore examined whether fluctuations in skin temperature are associated with those in vigilance level under conditions similar to everyday-life situations requiring sustained attention. Eight healthy participants (30.1 ± 8.1 years, M ± SD) participated in a 2-day protocol, during which vigilance and skin temperature were assessed 4 times per day in a silent, dimly lit, temperature-controlled room. Vigilance was assessed by measuring reaction speed and lapses on a novel sustained vigilance task specifically designed to increase lapse rate and range of reaction times. Skin temperature was sampled at 30-second intervals from 3 locations: distal, intermediate, and proximal temperatures were obtained from the middle finger (T(finger) ), the wrist (T(wrist)), and the infraclavicular area (T(chest)), respectively. Furthermore, 3 distal to proximal gradients were calculated. Mixed-effect regression analyses were used to evaluate the association of the fluctuations in temperatures and gradients and those in response speed and lapse probability. Especially the spontaneous fluctuations in proximal temperature were negatively associated with fluctuations in response speed and positively with lapse rate. If individual T(chest) temperature ranges were classified into 10 deciles, they accounted for 23% of the variance in response speed and 11% of the variance in lapse rate. The findings indicate coupling between the spontaneous fluctuations in skin temperature and vigilance during the day and are compatible with the hypothesis of overlap in brain networks involved in the regulation of temperature and vigilance. From an applied point of view, especially proximal skin temperature assessment may be of use in vigilance monitoring.  相似文献

Several types of unit activity were detected in the rat pineal gland during a 48-hour water and food deprivation. The unit activity rate in stress was higher by 4-6 times than in intact rats (due to an increase in the "fast" cells number and switching of some cells from regular to a burst type of activity). Electrical stimulation of olfactory epithelium decreased the unit activity rate in the most active pinealocytes. The daytime increase in the pineal electrical activity reflects an intensification of secretion of the protein/peptide substances and, probably, serotonin but not the melatonin. Blocking exocytosis with colchicin revealed a close relation of the pinealocytes secretion with their electrical activity. Existence of central (olfactory in particular) mechanisms limiting the pineal activation, was shown.  相似文献

Adults and immatures of Aedes mosquito populations were collected at temperatures between 40 and 44°C (summer), while larvae were collected at 0°C (winter). Major mosquito activities were observed from February to mid-December at various collection sites that yielded high populations of Aedes spp. from May to September, and high populations of Culex spp. and Anopheles spp. from March to September. In June to July, mosquito activity was suspended because the relative humidity was high (70%); a result of the monsoon rains. In August, with temperature ranging from 38 to 42°C, the populations of Culex , Anopheles and Aedes began to increase (36.8, 32.1 and 26.3%, respectively). Population estimates (through standard prototype Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Biogents (BG)-sentinel) and species composition of Aedes in forest habitats indicated a rapid increase in the populations of Ae. albopictus (52.3%), Ae. aegypti (19.1%) and Ae. vittatus (28.5%) following the rainy season in July. Areas positive for Ae. albopictus had identical population levels and distribution ranges of Ae. vittatus , however, there were no Ae. aegypti in Ae. albopictus areas from August to September. The population level, seasonal distribution, habitat and areas of adult activity marked by global positioning system (GPS) coordinates are being used for reference and for species composition data of Anopheles spp. (2), Culex spp. (10) and Aedes spp. (5) in addition to associated temperature, relative humidity and physico-chemical factors of larval habitat. Global meteorological changes have caused an expansion of the active period, leading to the mosquito's possibility of being a vector of disease increasing, resulting in the spread of dengue fever.  相似文献

Insufficient sleep and irregular sleep/wake rhythm are common problems among university students. We investigated the effect of sleep/wake rhythm and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) on the cortical oxygenation as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and cognitive performance in university students. Peak- and integral values by a word fluency task were measured with NIRS. EDS was evaluated by the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), and performance function was evaluated using N-back task. Peak cerebral oxygenation was significantly correlated with ESS, bedtime, wake-up time, and median time of sleep. Accuracy on 2-back task was significantly correlated with integral value. Peak- and integral values were significantly lower, and bedtime and median time of sleep were significantly delayed in the EDS group than in the non-EDS group. EDS accompanied by delayed sleep/wake rhythm and short sleep duration may play an important role in decreasing daytime brain activity and cognitive performance.  相似文献

Objectives

We examined temporal associations between objectively-measured physical activity (PA) during the day and in the evening, and sleep quantity and quality.

Study Design

PA and sleep were measured by actigraphs for an average of one week in an epidemiological cohort study of 275 eight-year-old children.

Results

For each one standard deviation (SD) unit of increased PA during the day, sleep duration was decreased by 0.30, sleep efficiency by 0.16, and sleep fragmentation increased by 0.08 SD units that night. For each one SD unit increase in sleep duration and efficiency the preceding night, PA the following day decreased by 0.09 and 0.16 SD units, respectively. When we contrasted days with a high amount of moderate to vigorous activity during the day or in the evening to days with a more sedentary profile, the results were essentially similar. However, moderate to vigorous PA in the evening shortened sleep latency.

Conclusions

The relationship between a higher level of PA and poorer sleep is bidirectional. These within-person findings challenge epidemiological findings showing that more active people report better sleep. Since only a few studies using objective measurements of both PA and sleep have been conducted in children, further studies are needed to confirm/refute these results.  相似文献

The cats (Felis catus) of this study were found to fluctuate daily between solitary and group living. These temporal changes in behaviour were interpreted as reflecting adjustments made by the cats for maximum use of different food sources available at these times. The dependence on both a solitary and communal life style for food procurement prevented any intricacy of either pattern from evolving. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the influence of daytime exercise on heart rate during sleep. Nine, untrained male college students volunteered to participate. They cycled at 75% maximum oxygen uptake, ( O2max) 30 min·day–1 for 12 weeks. The exercise duration was increased by 5 min every 4 weeks from 30 to 40 min per session. Post-training O2max[mean (SE): 48.9 (1.7) ml · kg–1 · min–1] values were significantly (P<0.01) higher than pre-training [45.5 (1.8) ml-kg–1·min–1] values. Before and after training, sleeping heart rate was assessed on two separate nights. Data were obtained during a night following 30 min of daytime cycling at 75 (6) % O2maxand on a night in which no daytime exercise was performed. A three-way repeated measures ANOVA [training status (pre-/post-training) × activity (exercise day/nonexercise day) × sleep time (18 epochs of 20 min each)] revealed a significant main effect for sleep time (P < 0.001) as well as a sleep time × training status interaction (P<0.02). No significant difference in sleeping heart rate was noted when exercise and non-exercise days were compared both before and after training. It is concluded that endurance training in these young adult men: (1) hastens the achievement of baseline heart rate during sleep, and (2) does not moderate the relationship between an acute bout of daytime exercise and sleeping heart rate.  相似文献

Trees at their upper range limits are highly sensitive to climate change, and thus alpine treelines worldwide have changed their recruitment patterns in response to climate warming. However, previous studies focused only on daily mean temperature, neglecting the asymmetric influences of daytime and nighttime warming on recruitments in alpine treelines. Here, based on the compiled dataset of tree recruitment series from 172 alpine treelines across the Northern Hemisphere, we quantified and compared the different effects of daytime and nighttime warming on treeline recruitment using four indices of temperature sensitivity, and assessed the responses of treeline recruitment to warming-induced drought stress. Our analyses demonstrated that even in different environmental regions, both daytime and nighttime warming could significantly promote treeline recruitment, and however, treeline recruitment was much more sensitive to nighttime warming than to daytime warming, which could be attributable to the presence of drought stress. The increasing drought stress primarily driven by daytime warming rather than by nighttime warming would likely constrain the responses of treeline recruitment to daytime warming. Our findings provided compelling evidence that nighttime warming rather than daytime warming could play a primary role in promoting the recruitment in alpine treelines, which was related to the daytime warming-induced drought stress. Thus, daytime and nighttime warming should be considered separately to improve future projections of global change impacts across alpine ecosystems.  相似文献

Urinary excretion of epinephrine during REM sleep deprivation in the daytime was examined in an attempt to determine whether epinephrine excretion during sleep is related to the structure of disturbed sleep. Six healthy males were subjected to two experimental conditions: 1) day sleep without interruption, as a control condition, and 2) day sleep with REM sleep deprivation. Under both conditions, epinephrine excretion levels of five of the subjects were found to be distributed along a basal regression line, expressing the relationship of epinephrine excretion and percent of waking time, as calculated in a previous study. The epinephrine levels of the one remaining subject exceeded the values predicted by the regression line. His sleep structure was not only distorted under REM deprivation conditions but also under control conditions as well. These results suggest that the basal regression line is useful for observing the existence of sleep disturbance; indeed, a subject with epinephrine excretion levels much higher than those predicted by the regression line was found to have spontaneously disturbed sleep. More study is needed to clarify the relationship between high epinephrine levels and disturbed sleep.  相似文献

Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) has generated considerable interest in the response of agricultural crops to [CO2]. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of a wide range of daytime [CO2] on dark respiration of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. IR-30). Rice plants were grown season-long in naturally sunlit plant growth chambers in subambient (160 and 250), ambient (330), or super-ambient (500, 660 and 900 μmol CO2 mol?1 air) [CO2] treatments. Canopy dark respiration, expressed on a ground area basis (Rd) increased with increasing [CO2] treatment from 160 to 500 μmol mol?1 treatments and was very similar among the superambient treatments. The trends in Rd over time and in response to increasing daytime [CO2] treatment were associated with and similar to trends previously described for photosynthesis. Specific respiration rate (Rdw) decreased with time during the growing season and was higher in the subambient than the ambient and superambient [CO2] treatments. This greater Rdw in the subambient [CO2] treatments was attributed to a higher specific maintenance respiration rate and was associated with higher plant tissue nitrogen concentration.  相似文献

Characteristics of work organization other than working time arrangements may contribute importantly to daytime sleepiness. The present study was designed to identify the psychosocial factors at work that predict daytime sleepiness in a sample of day and shift workers. Participants working at a pulp and chemical factory completed an annual questionnaire regarding psychosocial factors at work using the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Generic Job Stress Questionnaire (i.e., quantitative workload, variance in workload, job control, support from supervisor, coworkers, or family/friends, job satisfaction, and depressive symptoms), as well as daytime sleepiness (through the Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS]) and sleep disturbances for three years starting in 2002 (response rates, 94.6-99.0%). The present analysis included 55 day workers (11 women) and 57 shift workers (all men) who participated in all three years of the study, worked under the same work schedule throughout the study period, and had no missing data on any of the daytime sleep items. A repeated-measures analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the effects of work schedule (day vs. shift work) and psychosocial factors at work in 2002 on the ESS scores in subsequent years, with sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, chronic diseases, and sleepiness levels at baseline as covariates. Given significant and near-significant interactions of work schedules with psychosocial factor or study year, the ANCOVA, with the factors of psychosocial work characteristics and study year, was performed by type of work schedule. The results indicated a significant main effect of psychosocial work characteristics (p = 0.010, partial eng2 = 0.14) and an almost significant main effect of study year (p = 0.067, partial eng2 = 0.06) and interaction between psychosocial work characteristics and study year (p = 0.085, partial eng2 = 0.06) for variance in workload among the day work group. The day workers reporting high variance in workload in 2002 exhibited significantly higher ESS scores in 2003 and 2004 than did those reporting low variance in workload. The ANCOVA for the shift work group showed a main effect of psychosocial work characteristics for job satisfaction (p = 0.026, partial eng2 = 0.10) and depressive symptoms (p = 0.094, partial eng2 = 0.06) with the interaction between psychosocial work characteristics and study year for job satisfaction (p = 0.172, partial eng2 = 0.04) and depressive symptoms (p = 0.035, partial eng2 = 0.07). The shift workers with low job satisfaction and high symptoms of depression in 2002 showed significantly greater ESS scores in 2003 and/or 2004 than did those with opposite characteristics. These results may suggest a potential predictive value of variance in workload for day workers as well as job satisfaction and depressive symptoms for shift workers with respect to daytime sleepiness. The present findings may imply that redesigning these aspects of work environment would be of help in managing daytime sleepiness.  相似文献
