Recent Darwin scholarship has provided grounds for recognising the Origin as a literary as well as a scientific achievement. While Darwin was an acute observer, a gifted experimentalist and indefatigable theorist, this essay argues that it was also crucial to his impact that the Origin transcended the putative divide between the scientific and the literary. Analysis of Darwin’s development as a writer between his journal-keeping on HMS Beagle and his construction of the Origin argues the latter draws on the pattern of the Romantic or Kantian sublime. The Origin repeatedly uses strategies which challenge the natural-theological appeal to the imagination in conceiving nature. Darwin’s sublime coaches the Origin’s readers into a position from which to envision nature that reduces and contains its otherwise overwhelming complexity. As such, it was Darwin’s literary achievement that enabled him to fashion a new ‘habit of looking at things in a given way’ that is the centrepiece of the scientific revolution bearing his name.  相似文献

Using a genetic system of haploid strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae carrying a duplication of the his4 region on chromosome III, the pso3-1 mutation was shown to decrease the rate of spontaneous mitotic intrachromosomal recombination 2- to 13-fold. As previously found for the rad52-1 mutant, the pso3-1 mutant is specifically affected in mitotic gene conversion. Moreover, both mutations reduce the frequency of spontaneous recombination. However, the two mutations differ in the extent to which they affect recombination between either proximally or distally located markers on the two his4 heteroalleles. In addition, amplifications of the his4 region were detected in the pso3-1 mutant. We suggest that the appearance of these amplifications is a consequence of the inability of the pso3-1 mutant to perform mitotic gene conversion.  相似文献

Dr Shigeo Yamanouchi was born in Yamagata Prefecture and completed his secondary education at Tokyo Higher Normal School (THNS) where he was also a professor until 1904. In 1905, he went to the University of Chicago in the USA and earned a PhD in Botany in 1907. He is best noted for his excellent research on the cytology and life histories of the marine algae Polysiphonia, Fucus, Cutleria, Aglaozonia and Zanardinia, published between 1906 and 1921 while he was associated with the University of Chicago. He also described the freshwater green alga Hydrodictyon africanum. In 1910, he returned to THNS as a Professor and wrote several botanical textbooks, receiving his DSc degree in 1911 and traveling in England and the USA as an advisor for the Japanese Ministry of Education during 1911–1913. For much of the time between 1920 and 1942 he remained in the USA, returning to Japan following the advent of World War II, During his later life, he was in obscurity, and sadly there is very little recorded of his activities in the post-war years. He died in Tokyo on 2 February 1973 at the age of 96.  相似文献

Reciprocal qualitative and quantitative immunological experiments employing an anti-Pediococcus cerevisiae aldolase serum confirmed many of the interspecific relationships demonstrated previously among lactic acid bacteria with antisera prepared against the Streptococcus faecalis fructose diphosphate aldolase. The extent of immunological relatedness observed between the Lactobacillus and Pediococcus aldolases was markedly greater than that noted between Pediococcus and Streptococcus aldolases indicating that the pediococci share closer phylogenetic ties with the rod-shaped lactobacilli than with their spherical counterparts in the streptococci. In addition to confirming the existence of definitive, but distant, relationships between the lactic acid bacteria and certain gram positive nonsporeforming anaerobes, immunological cross-reactivity was also demonstrated between the pediococcal aldolases and those of Aerococcus viridans.This paper is dedicated with deepest appreciation to Prof. Roger Y. Elon E. Byrd was a prominent helminth taxonomist who published between 1930–1965. After his death in 1974, his collection was put in storage at the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine. A recent examination of his collection yielded a number of taxonomically valuable specimens that should be available to research workers worldwide. This paper enumerates the specimens recovered and their deposition. Digenean families and genera represented are: Brachycoeliidae (Brachycoelium), Dicrocoeliidae (Paradistomum), Lecithodendriidae (Prosthodendrium, Pseudosonsinotrema), Microphallidae (Levinseniella), Ochetosomatidae (Dasymetra, Pneumatophilus, Renifer, Neorenifer), Plagiorchiidae (Leptophyllum, Paurophyllum, Stomatrema, Styphlodora), Proterodiplostomidae (Pseudoneodiplostomum, Pseudocrocodilicola), Spirorchiidae (Spirorchis, Henotosoma, Vasotrema, Unicaecum, Hapalorhynchus), Telorchiidae (Cercorchis); the Nematoda are represented by the Diaphanocephalidae (Kalicephalus). This paper begins with a discussion of the scientia sexualis/ars erotica distinction, which Foucault first advances in History of Sexuality Vol. 1, and which has been employed by many scholars to do a variety of analytical work. Though Foucault has expressed his doubts regarding his conceptualization of the differences between Western and Eastern discourses of desire, he never entirely disowns the distinction. In fact, Foucault remains convinced that China must have an ars erotica. I will explore Foucault’s sources of authority. To this end, I introduce the work of famous Dutch sinologist Robert Hans van Gulik, who published the tremendously influential Sexual Life in Ancient China in 1961, and also explore Joseph Needham’s view on Chinese sex. I argue that, Foucault, in his fierce polemic against the “Repressive Hypothesis”, himself imagined a utopian Other where pleasure and desire were organised differently. I end on a discuss on Orientalism and the project of “Sinography” of comparative literature scholars Haun Saussy, Eric Hayot and others.  相似文献

The prevailing view among historians of science holds that Charles Darwin became a convinced transmutationist only in the early spring of 1837, after his Beagle collections had been examined by expert British naturalists. With respect to the fossil vertebrate evidence, some historians believe that Darwin was incapable of seeing or understanding the transmutationist implications of his specimens without the help of Richard Owen. There is ample evidence, however, that he clearly recognized the similarities between several of the fossil vertebrates he collected and some of the extant fauna of South America before he returned to Britain. These comparisons, recorded in his correspondence, his diary and his notebooks during the voyage, were instances of a phenomenon that he later called the “law of the succession of types.” Moreover, on the Beagle, he was following a geological research agenda outlined in the second volume of Charles Lyell’s Principles of Geology, which implies that paleontological data alone could provide an insight into the laws which govern the appearance of new species. Since Darwin claims in On the Origin of Species that fossil vertebrate succession was one of the key lines of evidence that led him to question the fixity of species, it seems certain that he was seriously contemplating transmutation during the Beagle voyage. If so, historians of science need to reconsider both the role of Britain’s expert naturalists and the importance of the fossil vertebrate evidence in the development of Darwin’s ideas on transmutation.  相似文献

This note is to call attention to a number of marine algal taxa from the Antilles that were described by Placide Duchassaing in his 1850 work Animaux radiaires des Antilles. The mid‐19th century was a period when the distinction between marine invertebrates and some calcified benthic marine algae was still not always clear. The names of these algal taxa were validated, although no figures or details on their specific provenance were provided, other than they were from Duchassaing's collections from the Antilles. Linnaeus's artificial and natural arrangements of plants are examined using a Spearman rank coefficient (which is explained) on his presentations of his own and others' arrangements in the Classes plantarum and elsewhere. There is little alteration in his successive artificial arrangements. In contrast, between 1751 and 1764 his natural arrangements changed considerably, partly in the sequences of genera within orders but mostly by rearrangement of the orders. Comparison with Cesalpino's and Ray's natural arrangements, using the longest-recognized natural groups as signposts, suggests that Linnaeus in his latest natural arrangement (1764) approximated more closely to Ray's. Examination of Linnaeus's successive treatments of certain groups (palms, Zingiberaceae, Hydrocharis-Stratiotes-Vallisneria) and of Giseke's exposition of Linnaeus's lectures on natural groups (1792) shows that Linnaeus was much influenced by habitus and vegetative characters as well as those of the fructification. He recognized orders consisting of a chain of genera linked successively by overall affinity and without any single diagnostic character. Where possible, he preferred characters of the fructification and his ‘secret’ consulting of the habitus is explained as secondary to such characters. It is suggested that in his latest arrangement he approximated more to a scala naturae, as he probably did in zoology about the same time. Within his artificial arrangements Linnaeus kept to sequences of genera as natural as possible. He realized that some groups in his natural arrangements were still artificial, and his aphorism that all genera and species are natural, classes and orders part natural and part artificial, refers to his and others' practice until the natural system could be completed. It is not a statement of the essential natures of these ranks. Linnaeus's distinction in practice between natural and artificial arrangements was less clear-cut than Sachs believed. Linnaeus's rejection of the ancient tree/herb division was empirical, not a reasoned repudiation of an a priori grouping. The tree/herb division could be upheld in his day as obviously natural, not merely accepted on authority.  相似文献

The problem of the sexual differentiation of the neoblasts of planarians is approached on the basis of karyological evidence assembled by the author and by his collaborators. In the polyploid and pseudogamic biotypes of Dugesia benazzii, D. lugubris and Polycelis nigra, the transformation of the neoblasts into oogonia or spermatogonia is accompanied by variations in the chromosome set. These variations may be considered to be dependent upon the gradient of sexuality — that is, of the territorial influences that determine the evolution in a female or a male direction. Significant evidence is also inferred from the chromosome cycle of hybrids between amphigonic diploid biotypes and polyploid biotypes. A new direction of research, based on the comparison between anterior and posterior regenerated segments of experimental polyploids with variable chromosome sets aims at establishing possible regional differences in the set of the neoblasts.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. J. Summary Rhodopseudomonas palustris and Rh. viridis were found to reproduce by budding. The differences between budding reproduction and binary fission were discussed, and it was concluded that there was a lack of evidence to indicate a fundamental difference between the two processes in bacteria. The plant remains from the discovery site of the Iceman include a large quantity of grass, from which parts of his clothing were also made. His cape consists of bundles of Brachypodium pinnatum tied with Tilia bast fibres, and the hay used as insulating material in his shoes consists of several species, such as Avenella flexuosa, Avenula versicolor/pubescens, Festuca spec., Nardus stricta and Brachypodium pinnatum. Most probably, these grasses were collected in subalpine matt-grass communities. Additionally, the birch bark vessel found beside the body contained pieces of Molinia caerulea. Grass fragments were evenly distributed all over his equipment as well as in the ice of the gully in which the Iceman was embedded. This implies that the ice in the gully thawed at least once between 3300 and 800 b.c. and the find assemblage was floating in the melt water.  相似文献

Early in his career Thomas Hunt Morgan was interested in embryology and dedicated his research to studying organisms that could regenerate. Widely regarded as a regeneration expert, Morgan was invited to deliver a series of lectures on the topic that he developed into a book, Regeneration (1901). In addition to presenting experimental work that he had conducted and supervised, Morgan also synthesized and critiqued a great deal of work by his peers and predecessors. This essay probes into the history of regeneration studies by looking in depth at Regeneration and evaluating Morgan’s contribution. Although famous for his work with fruit fly genetics, studying Regeneration illuminates Morgan’s earlier scientific approach which emphasized the importance of studying a diversity of organisms. Surveying a broad range of regenerative phenomena allowed Morgan to institute a standard scientific terminology that continues to inform regeneration studies today. Most importantly, Morgan argued that regeneration was a fundamental aspect of the growth process and therefore should be accounted for within developmental theory. Establishing important similarities between regeneration and development allowed Morgan to make the case that regeneration could act as a model of development. The nature of the relationship between embryogenesis and regeneration remains an active area of research.  相似文献

Reproductive isolation is demonstrated between morphologically distinct, sympatric demes of four epipelic diatom species inhabiting a small pond. The six demes ofSellaphora pupula, four of them allogamous, one probably autogamous, and one apparently asexual, differ morphologically with respect to size, shape, stria density and pattern. In the pond,Caloneis silicula, Cymatopleura solea, andNeidium ampliatum each contain two allogamous demes, differing principally in size. There are intrinsic barriers to hybridization between the demes, which operate at the earliest stages of sexual reproduction. Such gamodemes are perhaps best treated taxonomically as separate species.Dedicated to Prof. DrLothar Geitler on the occasion of his 90th birthday. Summary A gene bank from Azospirillum brasilense, Sp6 strain, was constructed in Escherichia coli in plasmid pRK290 and was used to identify Azospirillum genes. Clones carrying the his1, his2, pyr and cys1 genes were identified by genetic complementation and the expression of A. brasilense his1, his2 and pyr genes in E. coli was demonstrated. By E. coli complementation experiments, a cluster of three genes for the histidine biosynthetic pathway in A. brasilense has also been found, suggesting the existence of an operon-like unit.  相似文献

Linnaeus is often undervalued as a zoologist. His importance lies not only in the introduction of binomial nomenclature and his Systema Naturae. As a systematist he divided the insects into the groups, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Neuroptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera and Aptera. His programme, as expressed in his Methodus in Systema Naturae (1st ed.) is astounding in its biological manysidedness. He was before his time in many respects: he wrote and lectured upon bird migration, biological control of insects with their parasites or predators, protective mimicry, the struggle by all organisms for survival, contagious diseases as well as fermentation due to small living particles. He was the first to call attention to the close relationship between man and the anthropoid apes.  相似文献

In the 1930s John Tyler Bonner began studying the slime mold, Dictyostelium discoideum, as a way to investigate how organisms develop. With a life cycle that includes periods of unicellularity and multicellularity, Dictyostelium raises questions fundamental to development and evolution. In Morphogenesis: An Essay on Development (1952), Bonner built on his work with Dictyostelium to inform developmental theory and practice. By exploring how Bonner’s early work with Dictyostelium motivated his synthetic approach in Morphogenesis, this paper presents an example of how those who studied development sought ways to gain traction in the rapidly changing life sciences. While a biochemical viewpoint of development became dominant, morphogenesis provided a way to reintroduce and emphasize biological organization at the organismal level. Bonner’s early work offers a window to mid-twentieth century studies of development, an understudied area in the history of science, and shows that it was a time when growing experimental evidence enabled new ways of thinking about the relationship between ontogeny and evolution, and more broadly, about how the parts of nature might fit together.  相似文献

A previously undescribed mutation in the ssb gene, which codes for a major single strand DNA binding protein essential for DNA repelication, was mapped on the Escherichia coli Chromosome. Three ssb mutants were analyzed under parallel physiological conditions for the induction of SOS proteins (products of recA, uvrA, and an unknown gene), the production of mutants, the induction of lambda prophage, and sensitivity to DNA damaging agents. Two-dimensional electrophoretic techniques were used to quantitate changes in the rate of synthesis of proteins. The previously unpublished position of the uvrA gene-product in the two-dimensional matrix of E. coli proteins was described. These ssb strains exhibited varying sensitivities to ultraviolet irradiation and methylmethane sulfonate that correlated with the rate of constitutive synthesis of SOS proteins, spontaneous commitment to virulent growth of lambda lysogens, and elevation of endogenous mutation rates.Dedicated to the memory of Roger Y.
