An annotated list of deep-sea Anthozoa of the orders Actiniaria, Antipatharia, Scleractinia, Alcyonacea and Pennatulacea collected on the G.O. Sars MAR-ECO cruise to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the Azores and the southern tip of the Reykjanes Ridge is given. A total of 33 species is reported of which 32 were identified to species or genus level. The groups most rich in species were Actiniaria (nine species), Scleractinia (eight species) and Pennatulacea (eight species). Scleractinia, Antipatharia and Pennatulacea were mainly represented by species with a wide or cosmopolitan geographical distribution. In contrast, most of the actiniarians had been rarely recorded in the North Atlantic. Three species, Schizopathes affinis Brook, 1889 (Antipatharia), Dendrobrachia multispina Opresko & Bayer, 1991 and Heteropolypus cf. insolitus Tixier-Durivault, 1964 (Alcyonacea) are reported from the North Atlantic for the first time.  相似文献

Glass sponges (Hexactinellida) collected under the framework of the MAR-ECO project on the G.O. Sars cruise to the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge, between the Azores and the Reykjanes Ridge, and on the 49th cruise of Akademik Mstislav Keldysh to the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone are described. Fourteen species were identified in the material. This relatively rich fauna includes several novel findings, indicating that the hexactinellid fauna of the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge is poorly investigated. One genus, Dictyaulus, has never before been reported from the Atlantic Ocean. Two species belonging to the genera Heterotella and Amphidiscella are new to science. Two other species, Rossella nodastrella Topsent, 1915 and Doconestes sessilis Topsent, 1928, have been collected just one other time. Finally, a probable new genus of Euplectellidae, which unfortunately cannot be adequately described because of how small the specimens are, is represented among these collections. A large portion of dead, rigid skeletons of Euretidae and spicule mats of Rossellidae are also reported but not described in detail. Representation of some genera in the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone, coupled with recent observations from elsewhere along the Mid-Atlantic mountain chain, suggests that this fauna is as similar to those of the Indian Ocean and Indo-West Pacific as it is to West or East Atlantic faunas.  相似文献

Based on material from the fourth cruise of the RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh and the MAR-ECO cruise of the RV G.O. Sars, 31 species of Ophiuroidea were identified from the section of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the Reykjanes Ridge and the Azores. The taxonomy of the group of genera with reduced arm comb and tentacle pores restricted only to the proximal arm segments is reviewed. It is suggested that the genera Homalophiura H.L. Clark, 1915, Ophiurolepis Matsumoto, 1915, Theodoria Fell, 1961 and Homophiura Paterson, 1985 should be regarded as synonyms of the genus Ophioplinthus Lyman, 1878. From examination of the type specimens, it is demonstrated that the six-armed species Ophiacantha anomala G.O. Sars, 1871 also includes five-armed specimens previously identified as the separate species Ophiacantha cuspidata Lyman, 1878. The latter taxon is considered here as the junior synonym of O. anomala. Previously mentioned 'deep-water populations of the common shallow water species Ophiacantha bidentata (Retzius, 1805)' represent a separate species, Ophiacantha fraterna Verrill, 1885, which is well distinguished by the shape of the spicules of the disk, narrow outer oral papilla and narrower tentacle scale as well as a hermaphroditic nature. Three new species, i.e. Ophioplinthus pseudotessellata sp. nov., Ophiocamax patersoni sp. nov. and Ophiophyllum nesisi sp. nov., are described.  相似文献

Bivalve mollusks Bathymodiolus asoricus and Bathymodiolus puteoserpentis collected from the Rainbow and Logachev hydrothermal fields during dives of the Mir 1 and Mir 2 deep-sea manned submersibles were studied. Rates of methane oxidation and carbon dioxide assimilation in mussel gill tissue were determined by radiolabel analysis. During oxidation of 14CH4, radiocarbon was detected in significant quantities not only in carbon dioxide but also in dissolved organic matter, most notably 14C-formate and 14C-acetate, occurring in a 2 : 1 ratio. Activities of hexulose-phosphate synthase, phosphoribulokinase, and ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase were shown in the soluble fraction of gill tissue cells. At the same time, no activity of hydroxypyruvate reductase—the key enzyme of the serine pathway of C1-assimilation—was detected. The results of PCR amplification using genetic probes for membrane-bound methane monooxygenase (pmoA) and methanol dehydrogenase (mxaF) attest to the presence of the genes of these enzymes in the total DNA extracted from gill samples. However, no appropriate PCR responses were obtained with the mmoX primer system, which is a marker for soluble methane monooxygenase. All samples studied showed amplification with primers for the genera Methylobacter and Methylosphaera. At the same time, no genes specific to the genera Methylomonas, Methylococcus, Methylomicrobium, or MethylosinusandMethylocystis were detected. Electron microscopic examinations revealed the presence of two groups of endosymbiotic bacteria in the mussel gill tissue. The first group was represented by large cells possessing a complex system of cytoplasmic membranes, typical of methanotrophs of morphotype I. The other type of endosymbionts, having much smaller cells and lacking intracellular membrane structures, is likely to be constituted by sulfur bacteria.  相似文献

Five species of deep-sea pourtalesiid echinoids were collected by the RV G.O. Sars MAR-ECO expedition to the northern part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: Solenocystis imitans new genus, new species, Echinosigra phiale (Thomson, 1872), Echinosigra (Echinogutta) fabrefacta Mironov, 1974, and two unidentified species of Pourtalesia. Three types of plastron plating are distinguished within the family Pourtalesiidae; in Solenocystis new genus the plating is similar to that in Spatagocystis, a genus known only from the deep-sea Antarctic. Each of three groups with distinctive plastron plating shows a continuous morphological gradation from a less elongated test without subanal rostrum to an extraordinarily elongated test with large rostrum and wide subanal fasciole; the ratio width/length of test varies from 0.86 to 0.12. Some morphological characters of the pourtalesiids are regarded as adaptations to burrowing and appear to be correlated with test elongation. The family is represented in the northern Atlantic only by 'advanced' genera (Echinosigra, Pourtalesia and Solenocystis) with very elongated tests.  相似文献

Microbiological and biogeochemical measurements showed that the intensities of CO2 assimilation, methane oxidation, and sulfate reduction at the Lost City vent field (3° N) reach 3.8 µg C/(1 day), 0.06 µg C/(1 day), and 117 µg S/(1 day), respectively. On the surface of the carbonate structures occurring at this field, two varieties of bacterial mats were found. The first variety, which is specific to the Lost City alkaline vent field, represents jellylike bacterial mats dominated by slime-producing bacteria of several morphotypes. This mat variety also contains chemolithotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms, either microaerobic or anaerobic. The intensities of CO2 assimilation, methane oxidation, and sulfate reduction in this variety reach 747 µg C/(dm3 day), 0.02 µg C/(dm3 day), and 28000 µg S/(dm3 day), respectively. Bacterial mats of the second variety are formed by nonpigmented filamentous sulfur bacteria, which are close morphologically to Thiothrix. The intensities of CO2 assimilation, methane oxidation, and sulfate reduction in the second mat variety reach 8.2 µg C/(dm3 day), 5.8 µg C/(dm3 day), and 17000 µg S/(dm3 day), respectively. These data suggest the existence of subsurface microflora at the Lost City vent field.Translated from Mikrobiologiya, Vol. 74, No. 1, 2005, pp. 111–118.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Dulov, Lein, Dubinina, Pimenov.  相似文献

Nineteen species of the deep-water fish family Macrouridae inhabit the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) of the North Atlantic. Size and age structure, longevity and length at age were explored for seven of the more abundant species: Coryphaenoides armatus, Coryphaenoides brevibarbis, Coryphaenoides carapinus, Coryphaenoides guentheri, Coryphaenoides mediterraneus, Coryphaenoides rupestris and Macrourus berglax. The otoliths from these species had growth increments resembling those accepted as annuli in other deep-water species for which validation experiments have been conducted. Based on the counts of these growth increments, age estimates were derived as the basis for studies of age structure, growth and longevity. All the species appeared to have relatively low growth rates, but the interspecific variation in longevity illustrates that there is a considerable variation within the family and among species inhabiting the same deep-sea environment. Most of the species likely complete full life cycles on the MAR, but it is probable that both the youngest and the largest-oldest individuals of some of the species were not sampled adequately.  相似文献

The Japanese golden chanterelle commonly identified as Cantharellus cibarius was sampled in a broad range of forest vegetation. A total of 90 fresh and 11 herbarium specimens were examined microscopically, subjected to sequencing analysis of their nuclear ribosomal RNA (rDNA) and tef-1 genes, and their characteristics were compared with those of European C. cibarius. Based on morphological and ecological characteristics, basidioma samples from Japan were divided into four species. While specimens of Cantharellus sp. 4 from Hokkaido Island were included in the European C. cibarius clade phylogenetically, the other three species formed three unique clades. Among these, Cantharellus anzutake sp. nov. is sister to the clade of C. cibarius and was widely sampled from the northern limit of Honshu Island to the southern limit of Kumejima Island in Ryukyu Islands. Although C. anzutake was morphologically similar to C. cibarius, the two species were phylogenetically distinct. Other morphologically similar but genetically distinct chanterelle species from India exhibited macroscopic and microscopic differences compared with C. anzutake.  相似文献

The first exploration of the kinorhynch meiofauna in Portuguese marine waters has revealed the existence of two undescribed species of the cyclorhagid genus Echinoderes. In the present contribution we describe Echinoderes lusitanicus sp. nov. and Echinoderes reicherti sp. nov., both collected from subtidal regions of the coast of Algarve in the southernmost region of Portugal. Echinoderes lusitanicus sp. nov. is recognized by the presence of tubes on segment 2 in subdorsal and ventrolateral positions, on segment 5 in lateroventral positions, on segment 8 in lateral accessory positions, and on segment 10 in laterodorsal positions. Spines are present in middorsal position on segments 4 to 8, and in lateroventral positions on segments 8 and 9. The females have minute lateral terminal accessory spines. The second species, E. reicherti sp. nov., is characterized by tubes on segment 2 in subdorsal and ventrolateral positions, on segment 5 in lateroventral positions, and segment 8 in sublateral positions. In addition, the species possesses acicular spines in the middorsal position on segment 4, and in lateroventral positions on segments 6 to 9. Morphological aspects such as tube/spine pattern of the trunk or sexually dimorphic traits are discussed and compared with other Echinoderes species showing close resemblance.

The genus Pseudo‐nitzschia contains potentially toxic species of problematic taxonomy, making it one of the most intensively studied diatom genera. The study of 35 clonal strains isolated from the Bilbao estuary, an area that experiences recurrent blooms of Pseudo‐nitzschia, revealed the presence of two new species, P. abrensis and P. plurisecta, differing from their congeners in both morphology and gene sequence. The morphological features were analyzed by LM and EM, whereas molecular analyses were based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) regions of the rDNA. P. plurisecta appears closely related to P. cuspidata/P. pseudodelicatissima in the phylogenetic tree, whereas P. abrensis forms a moderately supported clade with P. heimii/P. subpacifica and P. caciantha/P. circumpora. Comparison of the secondary structure of ITS2 regions reveals marked differences in the most highly conserved regions among related taxa. Morphologically, the new species differ from their closest congeners in the arrangement of the poroid sectors and the density of valve striae and fibulae. The two species share similar pigment composition, and belong to the group of Pseudo‐nitzschia species containing only chlorophyll c2 and c3.  相似文献

This work deals with the taxonomic study of 12 orange-pigmented bacteria isolated from permafrost sediments, rice plots, and soils contaminated with wastes from the chemical and salt industries, which were assigned to the genus Brevibacterium on the basis of phenotypic characteristics, as well as of some strains described previously as Brevibacterium linens. The study revealed three genomic species, whose members and the type strains of the closest species of Brevibacterium had DNA similarity levels between 24 and 59%. The strains of the genomic species differed from each other and from the known species of Brevibacterium in some physiological and biochemical characteristics, as well as in the sugar and polyol composition of their teichoic acids. The 16S rDNA sequence analysis confirmed the assignment of the environmental isolates to the genus Brevibacterium and showed the phylogenetic distinction of the three genomic species. The results obtained in this study allow three new Brevibacterium species to be described: Brevibacterium antiquum (type strain VKM Ac-2118T = UCM Ac-411T), Brevibacterium aurantiacum (type strain VKM Ac-2111T = NCDO 739T = ATCC 9175T), and Brevibacterium permense (type strain VKM Ac-2280T = UCM Ac-413T).  相似文献

Three actinomycete strains were isolated from soil samples collected in Bangladesh. The cultures formed spherical sporangia on short sporangiophores directly above the surface of the substrate mycelium. The sporangia developed singly or in clusters and each sporangium contained several nonmotile spherical to oval spores with a smooth surface. The strains 3-9(24)(T), 3-21(27) and 7-40(26)(T) contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell walls, predominant menaquinone MK-9(H(6)) and MK-9(H(4)) and glucose, xylose, galactose, mannose, rhamnose, ribose and arabinose in the whole-cell hydrolysates. Diagnostic phospholipid is phosphatidylethanolamine and branched anteiso-C(17 : 0) (30.0-38.0%), anteiso-C(15 : 0) (12.5-14.0%), iso-C(16 : 0) (10.0-15.0%) and iso-C(15 : 0) (10.0-12.0%) were detected as the major cellular fatty acids. The acyl type of the peptidoglycan was glycolyl and mycolic acids were not detected. The G+C content of the DNA was 71 mol%. The chemotaxonomic data indicate that these strains belong to the family Micromonosporaceae. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence data suggested that the strains 3-9(24)(T), 3-21(27) and 7-40(26)(T) fall within the family Micromonosporaceae. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis and characteristic patterns of signature nucleotides as well as morphological and chemotaxonomic data, Luedemannella gen. nov. is proposed for our 3 isolates. DNA-DNA hybridization experiment and phenotypic characterization indicated that the new genus was constituted of 2 species, as Luedemannella helvata sp. nov. for the strain 3-9(24)(T) (=JCM 13249(T)=MTCC 8091(T)) and Luedemannella flava for the strain 7-40(26)(T) (=JCM 13250(T)=MTCC 8095(T)) in the family Micromonosporaceae.  相似文献
