The proliferation of a nongovernmental sector held the promise of linking local actors with national and international ones, thereby contributing to a highly participatory, Habermasian ideal in which the formerly marginalized would find greater participation and expression. Yet the role of international agents in community-based resource management projects has recently come under scrutiny. In addressing these issues in this article, I consider the roles of different interlocutors in two contrastive phases in an Amazonian community's movement to preserve its endangered fisheries. The comparative exercise demonstrates how institutional agents, by establishing a discourse that structures the criteria through which collective demands may be problematized, may inadvertently shift from mediation to domination, and from local partnering to local production. 相似文献

The Amazon region represents more than a half of all tropical forests in the world, and has been threatened by many anthropogenic activities, including several kinds of timber harvesting. The reduced-impact logging (RIL) is considered a less destructive method of timber harvesting, but there is a general lack of information about the effects on Amazonian invertebrates, including butterflies. We investigated the effect of RIL on fruit-feeding butterflies by comparing canopy and understory between an area under RIL and a control area without RIL. The canopy fauna is different and significantly richer than the understory fauna, showing that sampling only the lower strata underestimates the diversity of fruit-feeding butterflies. The effects of RIL were mainly detected in the understory butterfly assemblage, as significant differences were observed in species composition within this stratum. Effects of the RIL regime, which include tree cutting, skid trails and roads openings, are stronger in the understory than in the canopy, explaining the reported differences. Despite the detectable effects of RIL on the composition of fruit-feeding butterfly assemblages, the overall diversity was not affected. A similar pattern has been detected in many other groups, indicating that a noticeable part of the diversity of many taxa could be preserved in areas under RIL management. Therefore, in view of the problems of creating protected areas in the Amazon, RIL is a good alternative to preserve fruit-feeding butterflies and surely many other taxa, and it might be a desirable economic alternative for the region. 相似文献

Sediment cores from lakes located in the Pantanal Swamp, Central Brazil were analysed for the distribution of mercury released by the local gold mining. Atmospheric transport is the only pathway of mercury contamination of these remote lakes. Mercury concentrations were higher at the surface of sediments (62 to 80 ug.kg–1) decreasing to values of 20 to 30 ug.kg–1 in deeper layers. Mercury deposition rate was estimated as 90 to 120 ug Hg.m–2yr–1 Although mercury concentrations were much lower than in industrialized areas, mercury deposition rate for these Pantanal lakes is of the same order of magnitude of deposition rates measured in lakes in industrialized areas 相似文献

The Amazon Basin experiences severe droughts that may become more common in the future. Little is known of the effects of such droughts on Amazon forest productivity and carbon allocation. We tested the prediction that severe drought decreases litterfall and wood production but potentially has multiple cancelling effects on belowground production within a 7-year partial throughfall exclusion experiment. We simulated an approximately 35-41% reduction in effective rainfall from 2000 through 2004 in a 1ha plot and compared forest response with a similar control plot. Wood production was the most sensitive component of above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP) to drought, declining by 13% the first year and up to 62% thereafter. Litterfall declined only in the third year of drought, with a maximum difference of 23% below the control plot. Soil CO2 efflux and its 14C signature showed no significant treatment response, suggesting similar amounts and sources of belowground production. ANPP was similar between plots in 2000 and declined to a low of 41% below the control plot during the subsequent treatment years, rebounding to only a 10% difference during the first post-treatment year. Live aboveground carbon declined by 32.5Mgha-1 through the effects of drought on ANPP and tree mortality. Results of this unreplicated, long-term, large-scale ecosystem manipulation experiment demonstrate that multi-year severe drought can substantially reduce Amazon forest carbon stocks. 相似文献

Litter manipulation and associated invertebrate fauna in secondary forest, central Amazonia, Brazil 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Plant litter from selected tree species has been used for improving soil productivity in low-input systems of secondary vegetation in Central Amazon, leading to different conditions for invertebrates. Soil invertebrate assemblages were monitored to test the effects of adding litter types of contrasting nutritional quality and periods of exposure on the development of the community. We established four second growth plots with 80 subplots of 3 m2 from which the original litter was removed and replaced in 60 subplots. Twenty subplots received Hevea brasiliensis leaves, 20 others Carapa guianensis leaves, and another 20 an equal mixture of H. brasiliensis, C. guianensis and Vismia guianensis. Twenty subplots were left with the original litter. Litter and mineral soil (5 cm deep) sub-horizons were collected after 45, 100, 160, 240 and 300 days of exposure. The invertebrates were extracted using Kempson apparatus. At the day 210, the litter was replenished to match the surrounding litter. Regression analyses showed no significant effect of litter type, but the period of exposure did affect the community in both sub-horizons. Only after the litter replenishment, the type of litter and periods of exposure affected the community in the litter sub-horizon. Because we tried to isolate the effects of litter composition from other large-scale phenomena, several factors interfered in the experiment and potential problems were identified to optimize the investigation. The sampling design must be improved by using a larger number of subsamples for each kind of litter within each plot. Coarse parameters of Order and Family were suited to detect major environmental patterns on soil invertebrates, but taxonomic resolution to species and/or morphospecies is required to detect more subtle effects. Future manipulations should also be done on a longer time scale, and the replicates need to be spread over larger areas to capture the natural variations within the ecosystems. 相似文献

A statistical analysis is presented of patterns of variation in some physical, chemical, and biological variables for a 6 year series of data from the tropical, high altitude Lake Titicaca (Peru-Bolivia). ANOVA techniques and autocorrelation analyses were used to partition the variance in Titicaca, and in some comparison tropical and temperate series, into components with repeatable annual cycles and components attributable to other kinds of patterns.In Titicaca, insolation and stratification are highly seasonal in pattern of variation, although the amount of variance relative to means is small compared to temperate lakes. However, the seasonal pattern of physical variation is only weakly imposed on chemical and biological processes, to judge from analyses of silicate, oxygen, and primary production series. Here we present the within-site, seasonal, and interannual variations of the carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope ratios of leaves, wood, bark and litter from four sites in the Amazon region, Brazil. Samples were collected in Manaus (3° 06′07′′ S; 60°01′30′′ W), Ji-Paraná (10°53′07′′ S; 61°57′06′′ W), and Santarém (2°26′35′′ S; 54°42′30′′ W) with mean annual precipitation of 2207, 2040 and 1909 mm respectively. The pollen present in honey in colonies of Melipona seminigra merrillae and Melipona interrupta bred in Manaus was analysed. Between August and October 2012, honey samples were collected from the Sucupira meliponary, located in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. We identified a total of 70 pollen types belonging to 35 botanical families. In the samples from Melipona seminigra merrillae, the most represented pollen types were: Miconia-type (Melastomataceae) was the dominant pollen (DP) in August (51.19%), September (76.83%) and October (58.33%); Triplaris-type (Polygonaceae) was an accessory pollen (AP) in August (20.5%); and the remaining pollen types were classified as isolated pollen (IP), with Talisia macrophylla (Sapindaceae) exhibiting the highest percentage in August (12.92%). For Melipona interrupta, the most frequent pollen types were as follows: Miconia-type was the DP in August (59.33%) and October (61.33%) and an AP in September (37.5%); and Triplaris-type was an AP in August (35.83%), September (34.16%) and October (23.33%). The diversity of pollen types was not significantly different between the bees in the months evaluated. However, there was a large significant niche overlap in the months studied, August (Oik = 0.95), October (Oik = 0.89) and September (Oik = 0.69), revealing that of the 70 pollen types found in the samples, 22 were shared by the two bee species in large proportions, 28 were exploited exclusively by Melipona seminigra merrillae and 20 were collected only by Melipona interrupta. 相似文献

The paper investigates the length‐weight relationship of three cichlids species for the southwestern Amazon, Acre state. The individuals were collected at five sites during one year among august/2016 and june/2017 in Quinoá stream (10°06′03.33″S/67°40′11.50″W). The individuals were collected using: seine net, 6 m length, 2.25 high, and mesh size 5 mm, two dip nets, 5 mm mesh, 30 cm width, and 50 cm in length and two sieve with 5 mm mesh, 50 cm width, and 80 cm in length. The results show that one species presented positive allometric growth (Aequidens tetramerus) and the others negative allometric growth (Apistogramma acrensis and Crenicichla semicincta). 相似文献

AbstractThe nature of H+ and Cu2+ binding by soil-derived humic (HA) and fulvic (FA) acid was characterised using potentiometric titrations. The experimental data obtained showed that the derived proton balance equation was valid and capable of describing proton consumption by both polyelectrolytes. HA was found to be more acidic and more reactive as shown by its lower equivalent weight compared to FA. Acid consumption by HA during titrations was little affected at ionic strength (μ) up to 0.1 M although it was enhanced at higher μ. Displacement of protons by Cu2+ resulted in a nonlinear sigmoidal pattern suggesting the formation of different Cu-HA chelates, or existence of sites that differed in their affinities for Cu on the ligand. Different concentrations of added Cu appeared to favour one or both mechanisms, although the titration method could not differentiate which of the probable mechanisms was more dominant at a specific level of Cu added. Similar values were obtained for conditional stability constants using either the equation of Scatchard or Ruzic. 相似文献

Lakes Purrembete, Bullenmerri and Gnotuk are relatively deep lakes with salinities of 0.4, 8 and 58 respectively. From Carbon-14 experiments conducted monthly over a year annual primary production was 96.2, 182.1 and 90.1 gCm-2. These values correlate well with chlorophyll-a in Purrumbete and Bullenmerri, but not in Gnotuk. There is considerable dark fixation in both the saline lakes. 相似文献

Samples of 7 species of piscivorous, omnivorous, and herbivorous fish caught at 12 different sites on the Madeira River, Amazon
Basin, were analyzed for selenium and mercury. Selenium was determined by anodic stripping voltammetry and mercury by cold
vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The means for selenium concentrations ranged from 0.49 to 3.11 nmol/g and for mercury
from 0.41 to 6.66 nmol/g depending on the fish species. The molar ratios of Hg:Se increased according to the fish trophic
level. Piscivorous species had the highest mean ratio (4.0) and herbivorous species the lowest (0.9). There was a positive
and statistically significant correlation between selenium and mercury concentrations for the herbivorous species (r = 0.716;p = 0.0088) not seen for omnivororus and piscivorous species (r = -0.2032;p = 0.3407). These findings are significant for the fish-eating population of the Madeira River because the ingestion of mercury

Water samples were collected from the Amazon River system during a high flood period, in June 1989, and lipids associated with particles retained on GF/F filters were examined. Particles showed a highly variable organic carbon content (1.8–29.0%). Corresponding organic carbon concentrations varied from 0.36 to 1.13 mg/l. The flood conditions encountered during the sampling period may feed exceptional inputs of soil organic matter into the tributaries and the Amazon River. Composition and concentration of sterols, fatty acids and pigments were determined to estimate the relative portion of terrigenous and autochthonous fraction of this complex organic matter. Sterol distribution patterns were similar to other equatorial rivers, in the Orinoco (Venezuela) and Solo (Indonesia). In comparison with the dominant profile of the Amazon system, distinct patterns were found in the Trombetas River (295,22 275 295 285, 285,22) and in the Tapajos River (275,22 > 275 295, 285, 285,22). These fingerprints reflect different vegetation types of drainage basins and distinct planktonic pools. The distribution of even-carbon numbered saturated fatty acids in the carbon range of 24–36 revealed low inputs of constituents associated with cuticular waxes of vascular plants in Black waters and in the Tapajos River (200 ng/l), higher in White waters (328–483 ng/l) and highest in the Trombetas River (704 ng/l) and in stagnant waters of a small lake close to the Amazon (1088 ng/l). Pigment concentrations showed that in the main river and most tributaries vegetal carbon did not represent more than 2%, except for the Tapajos River (6.2%) and in relatively stagnant waters sampled along the main river (9.2%). Based on relative abundance of Chl b, Chl c, fucoxanthin, peridinin, alloxanthin, and zeaxanthin, various phytoplanktonic assemblages were evidenced in the Amazon River system. Branched fatty acids in the carbon range of 15–17 gave insight into bacterial signatures. They showed low microbial contribution to the fatty acid pool, with slightest higher contribution in a swamp of stagnant waters and in the White waters of the Solimoes River. 相似文献

Armadillos (Dasypodidae: Xenarthra) are the principal group of burrow-excavating mammals in Amazonian forest. Little is known about how the landscape's physical characteristics influence where these organisms choose to construct their burrows. We measured topographic characteristics of armadillo burrow placement and evaluated whether these variables affect overall burrow density. Our study took place on the study sites of the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project in the central Amazon, Brazil. To determine if armadillos exhibit habitat use preferences in constructing their burrows, we quantified the declination and elevation of available terrain along transect lines on our study sites and compared this with the characteristics of areas containing burrows. We also tested whether topographic variables were related to burrow density. Armadillos preferentially build burrows on low elevation, inclined terrain, and declination was positively related to burrow density. Low, inclined areas correspond to slopes next to stream basins. It may require less effort for armadillos to excavate these areas, while also providing proximity to water. The results of this study indicate that topographic information is important to consider when using burrows to estimate habitat use and density of armadillos in terra-firme forests of the central Amazon. 相似文献

1. Two small humic lakes in northern Sweden with concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) between 15 and 20 mg L–1 were fertilized with inorganic phosphorus (P) and inorganic nitrogen (N), respectively. A third lake was unfertilized and served as a control. In addition to this lake fertilization experiment, data from different regional surveys were used to assess the role of different limiting factors.
2. The P fertilization had no effects on bacterioplankton or phytoplankton, while phytoplankton were significantly stimulated by N fertilization. Inorganic nutrient limitation of bacterioplankton was a function of DOC concentration in water of the investigated region and nutrient-limited bacteria were found only in lakes with DOC concentrations less than around 15 mg L–1

The Amazon region is one of the most diverse areas in the world. Research on high tropical forest diversity brings up relevant contributions to understand the mechanisms that result and support such diversity. In the present study we describe the species composition and diversity of 15 one-ha plots in the Amazonian terra firme dense forest in Brazil, and compare the floristic similarity of these plots with other nine one-ha plots. The 15 plots studied were randomly selected from permanent plots at the Embrapa Experimental site, Amazonas State in 2005. The diversity was analysed by using species richness and Shannon's index, and by applying the Sorensen's index for similarity and unweighted pair-group average (UPGMA) as clustering method. Mantel test was performed to study whether the differences in species composition between sites could be explained by the geographic distance between them. Overall, we identified 8 771 individuals, 264 species and 51 plant families. Most of the species were concentrated in few families and few had large number of individuals. Families presenting the highest species richness were Fabaceae (Faboideae: 22spp., Mimosoideae: 22spp.), Sapotaceae: 22spp., Lecythidaceae: 15 and Lauraceae: 13. Burseraceae had the largest number of individuals with 11.8% of the total. The ten most abundant species were: Protium hebetatum (1 037 individuals), Eschweilera coriacea (471), Licania oblongifolia (310), Pouteria minima (293), Ocotea cernua (258), Scleronema micranthum (197), Eschweilera collina (176), Licania apelata (172), Naucleopsis caloneura (170) and Psidium araca (152), which represented 36.5% of all individuals. Approximately 49% of species had up to ten individuals and 13% appeared only once in all sampled plots, showing a large occurrence of rare species. Our study area is on a forest presenting a high tree species diversity with Shannon's diversity index of 4.49. The dendrogram showed two groups of plots with low similarity between them (less than 0.25), and the closer the plots were one to another, more similar in species composition (Mantel R = 0.3627, p < 0.01). The 15 plots in our study area share more than 50% of their species composition and represent the group of plots that have the shortest distance between each other. Overall, our results highlight the high local and regional heterogeneity of environments in terra firme forests, and the high occurrence of rare species, which should be considered in management and conservation programs in the Amazon rainforest, in order to maintain its structure on the long run. 相似文献

This study compared the structure of metazoan parasite communities in two populations of Leporinus friderici from two rivers of the Amazon River system in Brazil. Jainus leporini, Urocleidoides paradoxus, Urocleidoides sp., Tereancistrum parvus, Tereancistrum sp., Clinostomum marginatum, Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus, Contracaecum sp., Octospiniferoides incognita and Ergasilus sp. were found in both hosts. There were differences in species richness of parasites, Shannon index and the evenness between both host populations, because the parasite community showed a similarity of only 33%. Parasites of both host populations had an aggregated dispersion. Host size also contributes to the differences between the populations of hosts investigated, and the feeding habit contributes to the occurrence of endoparasites in L. friderici, an intermediate host for these parasites. The existence of variation in infracommunity and community of parasites for the same host species from different localities indicates the presence of an uneven distribution in terms of species and density of parasites, which are intermediate hosts, and some of them constitute food items for L. friderici in the localities surveyed. 相似文献

1. The spatial distribution and species richness of blackflies were evaluated at 58 stream sites in Central Amazonia, Brazil. Samples were taken along a north–south axis of approximately 130 km and a east–west axis of approximately 220 km.
2. Based on stream-site characteristics, the occurrence of larvae of the six most frequently collected species was highly predictable (79.3–91.5% accuracy in prediction of occurrence). The predictive value of stream size and the presence of impoundments agrees with results of similar work in the Holarctic Region, suggesting a general responses of blackflies to environmental parameters.

Although only 19.0% of interstream variation in species richness was explained by a regression model, results suggested that species richness was greater in larger, cooler, faster, covered streams with rocky beds than in smaller, warmer, slower, open streams with sandy bottoms. The purpose of the study was to compare the primary plankton productivities of lakes of different salinities and to determine the causative factors involved in their production rates. Four lakes (specific conductivity —mS cm−1 at 18°C) were initially chosen: Coragulac (9), Red Rock (25), Corangamite (38), Pink (250). Sampling and production measurements were made every two to three weeks. Three lakes were dominated by specific phytoplankton blooms: Red Rock (Anabaena spiroides), Corangamite (Nodularia spumigena). Pink (Dunaliella salina). Coragulac Lake had more diverse populations. Red Rock Tarn had some of the highest production values ever recorded. Extremely high soluble phosphate and inorganic carbon concentrations were the most important causative factors. Pink Lake had very low production rates. High salinity and low nutrient concentrations were limiting factors. The other lakes were intermediate in production and nutrient levels. Zooplankton populations were also determined. 相似文献
