Recently two species of carabid beetle were accidentally introduced onto the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. Both species are carnivorous and flightless. One of the species, Trechisibus antarcticus, is locally very abundant and in the process of invading the coastal lowland area, where the endemic herbivorous beetle Hydromedion sparsutum (Perimylopidae) is common. Field samples showed the abundance of the endemic species to be much lower, and its adult body size to be larger, in carabid-infested locations than in carabid-free locations. The sample data allowed us to estimate the growth rate of the H. sparsutum larvae and to reconstruct the most likely life-cycle of both species. A laboratory experiment showed a high mortality for the first three (out of six) larval instars of H. sparsutum in groups which had been subjected to predation by T. antarcticus. The duration of the period during which the larvae are vulnerable to predation was shown in a growth experiment to depend on food type. Quantitative and qualitative aspects of the interaction between the introduced predator and the endemic prey, and conditions which allowed the former to invade are discussed.  相似文献

Samples of Trechisibus antarcticus (Coleoptera, Carabidae), collected on South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, were analysed at 8 polymorphic allozyme loci, related to the supposition of a recent arrival of this species on South Georgia. On the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia two species of predatory beetle, Trechisibus antarcticus and Oopterus soledadinus (Coleoptera, Carabidae), were accidentally introduced. The colonisation process offers unique opportunities for testing ecological hypotheses in the field. As a basis for such studies, the spatial dynamics of the two species in the coastal lowland around Stromness Bay and Cumberland Bay were monitored during the period 1988–1996. Data are presented on the expansion of the two species and on the thermal characteristics of the tussock-forming grass Parodiochloa flabellata, which dominates the coastal lowlands. The largest expansion was shown by T. antarcticus, occurring as two populations in the Stromness Bay area. The origin of one of the populations, discovered in 1982, is Husvik Harbour, from where the species has colonised the central part of Stromness Bay. The second population, discovered in 1988 at Harbour Point, is invading the northern part of the area around Stromness Bay. Up to the present, three populations of O. soledadinus have been discovered. One population was found in 1988 at Husvik Harbour, co-existing with T. antarcticus, from where it is slowly expanding its distribution into the coastal zone. A second, very small, population of O. soledadinus was found in 1996 at Jason Harbour (Cumberland West Bay). The largest population of O. soledadinus, first reported in 1963, inhabits the area around Grytviken and King Edward Point (Cumberland East Bay), where it is the sole carabid species. The tussock grass vegetation offers a highly stable thermal environment compared with the more variable surroundings. Together with an ample food supply in the form of small arthropods and beetle larvae, and a vacant niche for arthropod predators, the benign microclimate of the tussock vegetation may explain the success of these predator introductions. Results of field observations on population parameters of the carabids, and laboratory measurement of egg production indicate the potential for large-scale co-existence. The human-assisted establishment of two non-native predatory carabid beetles (Merizodus soledadinus (Guerin-Ménéville), Trechisibus antarcticus (Dejean)) on the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia occurred 30–50 years ago, but the distribution of these species has never been the subject of regular monitoring, and was last assessed in the mid-1990s. Based on opportunistic collection records and directed field survey activities on South Georgia over four summer seasons between 2002/3 and 2008/9, we describe recent and important range expansions in both species on the island. The new distributional ranges of both species are highly suggestive of a continuing inadvertent human role in transferring them across the obstructions presented by tidewater glaciers or higher-altitude mountain passes. Both species now have the potential to spread unchecked by any other geographical obstructions across a large section of the north-east coast of the island and are likely to have considerable negative impacts on the elements of the native (including endemic) terrestrial invertebrate fauna.  相似文献

The influence of feeding state on cold-adapted metabolism was investigated in the adults of two carabid beetles, Trechisibus antarcticus and Oopterus soledadinus (Coleoptera: Carabidae), which have been introduced to sub-Antarctic South Georgia. The metabolic rates in both fed and starved O. soledadinus and T. antarcticus were determined at eight temperatures ranging from 0 to 35°C, using a Servomex 570A oxygen analyser. There was no significant difference in the metabolic rates between the fed and starved animals of each species. In T. antarcticus this ranged from 0.28 to 3.84 ml O2 g−1 h−1, and in O. soledadinus from 0.19 to 2.80 ml O2 g−1 h−1 at 0 and 35°C, respectively. In each of the four experimental groups there was a strong positive correlation between metabolic rate and temperature, with the highest increase occurring between 0 and 5°C. In contrast, the metabolic rate was significantly negatively correlated with initial live weight of the beetles at most temperatures. Three species of Antarctic mites, Alaskozetes antarcticus, Hydrogamasellus antarcticus and Rhagidia gerlachei, are abundant in the vicinity of Palmer Station, Antarctica. No single mechanism for reducing water stress was shared by all three species. A. antarcticus and R. gerlachei (both ca. 200 μg) are over twice as large as H. antarcticus (ca. 90 μg), but all had similar body water content (67%) and tolerated a loss of up to 35% of their body water before succumbing to dehydration. All imbibed free water and had the capacity to reduce water loss behaviorally by forming clusters. Alaskozetes antarcticus was distinct in that it relied heavily on water conservation (xerophilic classification) that was largely achieved by its thick cuticular armor, a feature shared by all members of this suborder (Oribatida), and abundant cuticular hydrocarbons. In comparison to the other two species, A. antarcticus was coated with 2–3× the amount of cuticular hydrocarbons, had a 20-fold reduction in net transpiration rate, and had a critical transition temperature (CTT) that indicates a pronounced suppression in activation energy (E a) at temperatures below 25°C. In contrast, H. antarcticus and R. gerlachei lack a CTT, have lower amounts of cuticular hydrocarbons and have low E as and high net transpiration rates, classifying them as hydrophilic. Only H. antarcticus was capable of utilizing water vapor to replenish its water stores, but it could do so only at relative humidities close to saturation (95–98 %RH). Thus, H. antarcticus and R. gerlachei require wet habitats and low temperature to counter water loss, and replace lost water behaviorally through predation. Compared to mites from the temperate zone, all three Antarctic species had a lower water content, a feature that commonly enhances cold tolerance.  相似文献

Summary Data on reproductive biology are presented for five benthic caridean shrimps from the high Antarctic (Chorismus antarcticus, Notocrangon antarcticus, Nematocarcinus lanceopes, Lebbeus antarcticus and Eualus kinzeri). The first three species were very common on the Weddell Sea shelf and upper slope, whereas only a few individuals of the other two species were caught-but these did include some ovigerous females. Our measurements include size at first maturity, fecundity (total number and mass of eggs), individual egg mass, egg length, ovary indices, maximum size encountered and documentation of the reproductive cycle in spring and summer. Egg number generally increases with female size, and the largest species (N. lanceopes) also carries the highest number of eggs. The eggs of all high Antarctic species are large, the extreme being L. antarcticus with an egg length of up to 3.3 mm. For C. antarcticus and N. antarcticus, which have wide geographic distributions, a comparison is made with older published and unpublished data from the Subantarctic (South Georgia). High Antarctic representatives of these two species grow to a larger maximum size, attain sexual maturity later in their life cycle, and produce fewer and larger eggs in relation to both carapace length and female mass, than their Subantarctic counterparts.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Summary 108 successful ground and Agassiz trawl catches were taken between 155 and 2031 m depth in the eastern Weddell Sea on board RV Polarstern in spring and summer (October–February) 1985–1989. In addition, 7 hauls were taken with a semipelagic trawl. Only 19 hauls (16.5%) contained no shrimps. The others yielded large numbers of Notocrangon antarcticus, Chorismus antarcticus, and Nematocarcinus lanceopes as well as 20 Lebbeus antarcticus and 11 specimens of an Eualus species new to science. 8 Pasiphaea scotiae were caught in a pelagic krill trawl. No reptant decapod crustaceans were detected in the study area. Shrimp densities determined from trawl catches were lower than estimates derived from underwater photography but in the same order of magnitude. Although yields of the three common shrimp species in some cases exceeded 20 kg per 0.5 h haul, shrimp stocks in the area cannot be considered to be of commercial significance. A wider geographical distribution and greater frequency of shrimps in high Antarctic waters was found than described hitherto. There was considerable variation in numbers, sex composition, occurrence at different depths, and size-frequency distributions. C. antarcticus and N. antarcticus grow to a larger size compared with individuals from the Antarctic Peninsula area. Within the area of investigation, length frequency distributions are skewed towards larger sizes at higher latitudes. In the eastern Weddell Sea larger specimens of the three common species live at greater depths than smaller individuals. A new species of Gladioferens is described from a freshwater lake in the Bunger Hills, Greater Antarctica. A key to the six species of Gladioferens is provided for both sexes. Most species of the subgenus containing G. antarcticus sp. nov. are remarkable in possessing asymmetries in the second legs (male) and fourth legs (female). This suggests that the mating behaviour of these species may be radically different from that in most heterarthrandrian calanoids and calls for further study. However, G. antarcticus is more primitive than its consubgeners in having, in the male, symmetrical second legs and 3-segmented endopods in the fifth legs. The genus shows a highly disjunct distribution (Australia, New Zealand and Bunger Hills) and its biogeography is now of outstanding interest.  相似文献

Antarctic soil ecosystems are amongst the most simplified on Earth and include only few soil arthropod species, generally believed to be opportunistic omnivorous feeders. Using stable isotopic analyses, we investigated the food choice of two common and widely distributed Antarctic soil arthropod species using natural abundances of 13C and 15N and an isotope labelling study. In the laboratory we fed the isotomid springtail Cryptopygus antarcticus six potential food sources (one algal species, two lichens and three mosses). Our results showed a clear preference for algae and lichens rather than mosses. These results were corroborated by field data comparing stable isotope signatures from the most dominant cryptogams and soil arthropods (C. antarcticus and the oribatid mite Alaskozetes antarcticus). Thus, for the first time in an Antarctic study, we present clear evidence that these soil arthropods show selectivity in their choice of food and have a preference for algae and lichens above mosses.  相似文献

A technique for the accurate determination of lipid content of very small quantities of biological tissue was applied to two Antarctic oribatid mites,Alaskozetes antarcticus andHalozetes belgicae, and a collembolan,Cryptopygus antarcticus. Analysis of monthly samples of the three species, collected between November 1989 and March 1991, revealed little evidence of any seasonal pattern of lipid deposition or use. MaleAlaskozetes were the only exception, showing very low lipid levels for a short period of the austral summer, followed by rapid deposition before the onset of winter. Mean lipid contents of the three species over the study period were 10–15% of mean dry weight. There was evidence of a seasonal pattern of egg formation and oviposition in bothAlaskozetes andHalozetes, but this was not reflected in the observed lipid levels. Feeding activity was mostly restricted to the summer months (November–March); a temporary resumption of feeding in winter (late August 1990) was followed by an increase in lipid content in both sexes ofAlaskozetes.  相似文献

Abstract. The thermal preferences of Alaskozetes antarcticus (Acari, Cryptostigmata) and Cryptopygus antarcticus (Collembola, Isotomidae) were investigated over 6 h within a temperature gradient (?3 to +13 °C), under 100% relative humidity (RH) conditions. After 10 days of acclimation at ?2 or +11 °C, individual supercooling points (SCP) and thermopreferences were assessed, and compared with animals maintained for 10 days under fluctuating field conditions (?6 to +7 °C). Acclimation at ?2 °C lowered the mean SCP of both A. antarcticus (?24.2 ± 9.1) and C. antarcticus (?14.7 ± 7.7) compared to field samples (?19.0 ± 9.0 and ?10.7 ± 5.2, respectively). Acclimation at +11 °C increased A. antarcticus mean SCP values (?13.0 ± 8.5) relative to field samples, whereas those of C. antarcticus again decreased (?16.7 ± 9.1). Mites acclimated under field conditions or at +11 °C selected temperatures between ?3 and +1 °C. After acclimation at ?2 °C, both species preferred +1 to +5 °C. Cryptopygus antarcticus maintained under field conditions preferred +5 to +9 °C, whereas individuals acclimated at +11 °C selected +9 to +13 °C. For A. antarcticus, thermopreference was not influenced by its cold hardened state. The distribution of field specimens was further assessed within two combined temperature and humidity gradient systems: (i) 0–3 °C/12% RH, 3–6 °C/33% RH, 6–9 °C/75% RH and 9–12 °C/100% RH and (ii) 0–3 °C/100% RH, 3–6 °C/75% RH, 6–9 °C/33% RH and 9–12 °C/12% RH. In gradient (i), C. antarcticus distributed homogeneously, but, in gradient (ii), C. antarcticus preferred 0–3 °C/100% RH. Alaskozetes antarcticus selected temperatures between 0 and +6 °C regardless of RH conditions. Cryptopygus antarcticus appears better able than A. antarcticus to opportunistically utilize developmentally favourable thermal microclimates, when moisture availability is not restricted. The distribution of A. antarcticus appears more influenced by temperature, especially during regular freeze‐thaw transitions, when this species may select low temperature microhabitats to maintain a cold‐hardened state.  相似文献

Inter-annual variation in the diet of female southern rockhopper penguins (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome) at Staten Island was studied during the early chick-rearing period to investigate the components of the diet and highlight some points of the possible food web in the study area. Gregarious crustaceans, small juveniles of squid and octopus, fish larvae and juvenile fish dominated the diet. There was a high degree of variability in the relative contribution of the different prey taxa during the three seasons studied. Overall, crustaceans were by far the most abundant in terms of number. Cephalopods contributed less to numbers, while fish was the least represented of the prey item in 2 years. Inter-annual variation in the proportion of prey items consumed was apparent only for some prey species: Thysanoessa gregaria, Gonatus antarcticus, Themisto gaudichaudii, Harpagifer bispinis and Salilota australis. These data suggest variability in the prey resources at sea during the study period and a subsequent opportunism of this penguin species to exploit what is differentially available. In terms of the food web in the area, we suggest an apparent relationship in the availability between T. gaudichaudii and G. antarcticus, and between T. gaudichaudii and H bispinnis. These relationships emphasise the importance of understanding food web interactions, especially those involving multiple trophic levels, when determining the role of upper-trophic level predators in marine systems.  相似文献

We examined the influence of warming and supplemental precipitation on plant production and abundance of the dominant microarthropod, the springtail Cryptopygus antarcticus (Collembola), in tundra dominated by the vascular plants Colobanthus quitensis and Deschampsia antarctica along the Antarctic Peninsula. Tundra cores were placed in plots near Palmer Station where they were warmed with infrared heaters in combination with receiving supplemental precipitation. Diel canopy air and soil temperatures and air vapor pressure deficits in warmed plots were elevated 0.8 °C, 2.2 °C and 0.13 kPa, respectively. After two growing seasons, total aboveground plant production was greater under warming as a result of enhanced production by C. quitensis, which more than offset declines in moss biomass. Total aboveground plant production was also greater under supplemental precipitation primarily as a result of enhanced moss production. Total aboveground plant production was greatest under the combination of warming and supplemental precipitation, primarily as a result of enhanced C. quitensis production. C. antarcticus were more abundant in cores receiving supplemental precipitation and there was a strong treatment interaction; these springtails were most abundant in warmed cores receiving supplemental precipitation. Over 50% of the variability in the abundance of C. antarcticus could be explained by differences in aboveground plant biomass. However, plant production did not appear directly responsible for differences in C. antarcticus abundance; when we examined C. antarcticus abundance per unit of aboveground plant biomass, differences in its abundance among treatments were still apparent implying these differences were not the direct result of plant biomass. The responses of C. antarcticus were consistent with its known moisture and thermal preferences, suggesting that abiotic factors played a dominant role in controlling its abundance. Precipitation regime had large impacts on warming responses and these were species specific, illustrating the importance of future precipitation regimes in predicting system responses to warming.  相似文献

The existence of seasonal changes in concentrations of water-soluble carbohydrates in arthropods (both freezing-tolerant and intolerant species) from Signy Island was demonstrated. Seasonal patterns of variation, imposed by seasonality of the maritime Antarctic environment, in the production of soluble carbohydrates in response to low temperatures and/or dehydration for a range of terrestrial arthropods were confirmed. The freshwater copepod Pseudoboeckellapoppei exhibited much lower levels of soluble carbohydrates, with glycerol as the main component, and smaller seasonal fluctuations relative to the four terrestrial species. The two Antarctic mites (Alaskozetes antarcticus and Gamasellus racovitzai) accumulated glycerol (as a single-component cryoprotective system), in agreement with previous work reporting increased glycerol levels and lowering of the supercooling point in A. antarcticus. In the case of G. racovitzai, increased levels of glycerol may function in a different manner. The larval dipteran Eretmoptera murphyi and the collembolan Cryptopygus antarcticus have complex multi-component cryoprotective systems involving trehalose that may be related to low temperature acclimation and dehydration. These findings are discussed in relation to published work on single and multiple cryoprotective systems, supercooling points and the involvement of dehydration as a complementary stress in overwintering insects. Terrestrial arthropods that reside in Antarctica are exposed to considerable periods of environmental stress, thus factors that promote identification of favorable microhabitats are extremely important. In this study, we report the presence of chemical cues that induce oviposition and aggregation in two species of Antarctic collembolans, Cryptopygus antarcticus and Friesea grisea. Responses of the Collembola were enhanced by low temperatures but were not altered by humidity. One of the major physiological benefits derived from an aggregation was a substantial reduction in water loss rates. Although F. grisea and C. antarcticus were commonly found in cross-species aggregations, we found no evidence to suggest cross-species attraction. When individuals were exposed to areas previously occupied by groups of Collembola, more eggs were laid. Thus, chemicals released by the collembolans appear to induce both aggregation and oviposition in these Antarctic species.  相似文献

The water status of the collembolan Cryptopygtus antarcticus (Willem) was investigated from April 1984 to December 1987 at Signy Island, maritime Antarctic, by monthly field sampling to determine body water content. Water content, expressed either as the weight of water per unit dry weight or as a proportion of fresh weight, exhibited both a seasonal cycle and an upward trend over the 44-month study, both of which were highly significant. On an annual basis, body water content was at a minimum (1.21 g g?1) in July and maximal (1.98 g g?1) in September, whilst over the entire study water contents increased from 1.3 to 2.0 g g?1 (or 57-66% of fresh weight) calculated from the fitted linear regression line. Field water contents were below those found for this species in culture (2.9-5.9 g g?1). Individual C. antarcticus survived experimental loss of 20% of their body water with a resultant significant rise in haemolymph osmolarity from 285 to 397 mOsm L?1 and there was no evidence of osmoregulation under the experimental conditions of 20 °C and 35% relative humidity. The cuticular permeability (mean conductance) of individual Collembola in dry air increased exponentially with temperature over the range D-45 °C (Q10= 2.0) showing no control of water loss. The physiological response of C. antarcticus suggests that it experiences water stress in its maritime Antarctic habitats with significant seasonal variations of body water content, which correlate with annual cycles of water availability. It is concluded that the significant rise in its mean body water content over the 44-month field study was associated with increased glacial ablation due to higher levels of irradiation and windspeed making available more liquid water. Analyses of climate records for Signy Island from 1947 to 1990 showed that mean monthly air temperature rose by 0.93 °C over this period and by 2.29 °C during the 1980s, both statistically significant increases. Mean monthly windspeeds also increased significantly during 1970–90, and it is suggested that this parameter is the primary climatic driving force behind the increase in glacial ablation during the last two decades. The field water status of species such as C. antarcticus may reflect changes in the patterns of atmospheric circulation, associated with the circumpolar vortex, through increased ozone depletion due to increased tropospheric concentrations of halocarbons.  相似文献

Pleurostomatida Schewiakoff, 1896 is a cosmopolitan order of ciliates. In the present study, we investigated two new pleurostomatid species, Apolitonotus lynni gen. et sp. nov. and Protolitonotus clampi sp. nov., with state‐of‐the‐art methods. Apolitonotus lynni lacks its oral extrusomes and its right kineties form an anterior semi‐suture near the dorsal margin. Based on these two features, the new genus Apolitonotus was established within the Protolitonotidae Wu et al., 2017. Protolitonotus clampi differs from its congeners by its size of 80–130 × 15–30 μm, 4–6 left, and 9–11 right kineties, extrusomes arranged along the oral slit, and two macronuclear nodules. Because Litonotus antarcticus possesses an anterior semi‐suture and oral extrusomes, it was transferred to the genus Protolitonotus, becoming P. antarctius comb. nov. (basionym Litonotus antarcticus Song and Wilbert, 2002). Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequences suggest a sister group relationship of P. clampi and the family Kentrophyllidae, and A. lynni is adelphotaxon to Litonotus gracilis, both within the order Pleurostomatida. Based on the new findings, an improved diagnosis for Protolitonotus was also provided.  相似文献

Summary Two species of the echinoid genus Sterechinus were documented from 92 trawl stations and 55 photographic stations in the eastern and southern Weddell Sea between 100 and 1200 m water depth. We found two species occuring along the whole shelf and slope, S. neumayeri being more abundant above 450 m water depth and S. antarcticus dominating the deeper regions. The size-frequency distributions of both species indicate differences in growth, mortality and longevity. First estimates of abundance and biomass of S. neumayeri and S. antarcticus are 0.085 ind/m2 & 0.005 gAFDW/m2 and 0.022 ind/m2 & 0.005 gAFDW/m2, respectively.AWI Publication No. 392  相似文献
