Summary Decreases in the concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium, in the shoots of wheat seedlings soon after the start of waterlogging were mainly attributed to an inhibition of ion uptake and transport by roots in the oxygen deficient soil. There was a small net accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium by the aerial tissues, principally the tillers rather than the main shoot. By contrast, calcium and magnesium accumulated in both tillers and main shoot. With waterlogging, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were translocated from the older leaves to the younger growing leaves, and in the case of nitrogen this was associated with the onset of premature senescence. Calcium and magnesium were not translocated from the older leaves, the younger leaves acquiring these cations from the waterlogged soil. The promotion of leaf senescence by waterlogging was counteracted by applications of nitrate or ammonium to the soil surface, or by spraying the shoots with solutions of urea, but the beneficial effects on shoot growth were small. The role of mineral nutrition in relation to waterlogging damage to young cereal plants is discussed.  相似文献

Rice cultivar evaluation for phosphorus use efficiency   总被引:12,自引:1,他引:11
Phosphorus deficiency is one of the most growth-limiting factors in acid soils in various parts of the world. The objective of this study was to screen 25 rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.) at low, medium, and high levels of soil P. Number of tillers, root length, plant height, root dry weight and shoot dry weight were related to tissue P concentrations, P uptake and P-use efficiency. Shoot weight was found to be the plant parameter most sensitive to P deficiency. Significant cultivar differences in P use efficiency were found. Phosphorus use efficiency was higher in roots than shoots and decreased with increasing levels of soil P. Positive correlations were found among growth parameters such as plant height, tillers, root and shoot weight, and P content of roots and shoots. These results indicate selection of rice cultivars for satisfactory performance under low P availability can be carried out using shoot and root dry weight as criteria.  相似文献

Beech seedlings of different drought sensitivity originating from 11 German provenances were grown in pots and cultivated in a greenhouse. The present paper aims to give insights on uptake, transport and use of macronutrients, since the knowledge of drought effects on the nutrition of trees is low compared to water relations. Therefore, the elemental composition, the ratio of inorganic to total content, and the partitioning between roots and shoots of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulphur were investigated as affected by provenance and drought treatment. Phosphorus and phosphate concentrations decreased in all tissues after a 3 week drought treatment simulating a summer drought period. In roots carbon increased and nitrate decreased, in stems nitrogen decreased but nitrate increased following drought. The observed effects on phosphorus and phosphate are discussed in terms of lower phosphate mobility in the substrate due to lower water availability. The decrease in the ratio of phosphate to phosphorus in the tissues suggests the use of vacuolar phosphate pools for maintaining organic phosphorus homeostasis. The partitioning of all macronutrients was not affected by drought, although phosphorus and phosphate were significantly lowered in tissues. In most of the parameters studied significant differences between provenances were found. The recently observed drought sensitivity of provenances was not reflected in the strength of concentration changes or partitioning of macronutrients by drought over provenances.  相似文献

This study deals with the effect of pine bark bugs (Aradus cinnamomeus Panzer) on the nutrition of young Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.). Soil and needle samples for analytical purposes were collected from a young pine stand growing on a dry barren mineral soil afflicted by pine bark bugs. The damage to vascular tissues caused by pine bark bugs disturbed the nutrition of the trees, especially in the top part of the crown. The foliar calcium, magnesium, manganese and sulphur concentrations were highly reduced. Scots pines suffered from a lack of calcium, magnesium, nitrogen and phosphorus. These deficiencies were secondary by nature, because no differences were observed between the nutrient concentrations of the underlying soil of the healthy and affected trees. The symptoms of trees damaged by pine bark bugs resembled most of all calcium deficiency symptoms.  相似文献

Two strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum wereevaluated with five commercial cultivars of soybean(Clark, Crauford, Davis, Centaur, and Nessen) and onehypernodulating mutant NOD1-3. The hypernodulatingNOD1-3 produced 30–50 times more nodules thancommercial cultivars either inoculated with B.japonicum strain USDA 123 or RCR 3409. The currentexperiments were extended to determine if therestricted nodulation of commercial cultivars could be overcome by grafting them to a hypernodulated shoot (NOD1-3). Grafting of NOD1-3 shoots to Clark and Davis roots induced hypernodulation on roots of Clark and Davis but did not enhance nodulation when grafted onto the roots of Crauford, Centaur, and Nessen. The shoots of Clark, Davis, Centaur and Nessen significantlyinhibited nodule formation on the root of NOD1-3,while Crauford shoots did not alter nodule formationon the roots of NOD1-3 as compared with self-grafts ofNOD1-3. It appears that the shoot of NOD1-3 has theability to alter autoregulatory control of nodulationof Clark and Davis cultivars, but did not withCrauford, Centaur and Nessen. The results suggestedthat the regulation of nodulation in soybean cultivarsClark and Davis is controlled by the shoot factors, while the Crauford was root controlled.Reciprocal-grafts between NOD1-3 and Centaur or Nessenindicate that both shoot and root factors involved inregulation of nodulation and the regulation ofnodulation did not depend on bradyrhizobial strains. Isoflavonoid analyses from extracts of grafted plantsshowed that NOD1-3 shoots had markedly higher rootisoflavonoid concentrations in roots of both Clark andNOD1-3. The shoot control of hypernodulation may becausally related to differential root isoflavonoidlevels, which are also controlled by the shoot. Thecurrent work was extended to investigate the effect ofapplication of an isoflavonoid (daidzein) on nodulationand nitrogen fixation of soybean cultivars Clark andCentaur as well as in vitro growth of Bradyrhizobium japonicum. Application of theisoflavonoid (daidzein) significantly enhanced thenodulation and nitrogenase activity of Clark but notof Centaur indicating that this character is notrelated to isoflavonoids. Therefore, autoregulationin Clark and Centaur plants may be separate events inlegume-rhizobia symbiosis and regulated by differentkinds of signals. Addition of daidzein to yeastmannitol broth medium promoted the growth of B.japonicum strain USDA 123 and RCR 3409. It seemsthat this compound is able to help the nodulation ofsoybean cv Clark by a Bradyrhizobium strain. Understanding the signaling pathways between rhizobiaand their host plants may allow modifications of thisinteraction to improve symbiotic performance.  相似文献

Infection of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) with its endemicNeotyphodium coenophialum-endophyte (Morgan-Jones and Gams) Glenn, Bacon and Hanlin appears to reduce copper (Cu) concentrations in forage and serum of grazing animals, contributing to a range of immune-related disorders. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to identify effects of novel endophyte strains on Cu acquisition by tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) varieties Grasslands Flecha and Jesup infected with a novel, non ergot producing endophyte strain AR542, and two perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) varieties Aries and Quartet infected with a novel, non lolitrem B producing strain AR1, and their noninfected (E−) forms. Individual endophyte/grass associations were cultivated in nutrient solutions at 1.0 (P+) and 0.0 mM (P−) phosphorus concentrations. The Cu2+-binding activity of extracellular root exudates, and concentrations of Cu and other heavy metals in roots and shoots were measured. Extracellular root exudates of AR542-infected vs. E− tall fescue had higher Cu2+-binding activity only in P− nutrient solution as shown by lower concentration of free Cu2+ (0.096 vs. 0.188 mmol Cu2+ g−1 root DM, respectively). The Cu2+-binding activity by root exudates of perennial ryegrass was not affected by endophyte infection, but was higher (i.e., lower concentration of free Cu2+) in P− vs. P+ nutrient solution (0.068 vs. 0.114 mmol Cu2+ g−1 root DM). In this hydroponic experiment, Cu concentrations in shoots of both grasses were not a function of Cu2+-binding activity and endophyte effects on heavy metal concentrations in shoots and roots were specific for each variety. The Cu2+-binding activity of extracellular root exudates may affect Cu accumulation by field-grown, endophyte-infected tall fescue under P-limiting growth conditions and warrants verification by more specific methods.  相似文献

To determine the effect of microbial metabolites on the release of root exudates from perennial ryegrass, seedlings were pulse labelled with [14C]-CO2 in the presence of a range of soil micro-organisms. Microbial inoculants were spatially separated from roots by Millipore membranes so that root infection did not occur. Using this technique, only microbial metabolites affected root exudation. The effect of microbial metabolites on carbon assimilation and distribution and root exudation was determined for 15 microbial species. Assimilation of a pulse label varied by over 3.5 fold, dependent on inoculant. Distribution of the label between roots and shoots also varied with inoculant, but the carbon pool that was most sensitive to inoculation was root exudation. In the absence of a microbial inoculant only 1% of assimilated label was exuded. Inoculation of the microcosms always caused an increase in exudation but the percentage exuded varied greatly, within the range of 3–34%.  相似文献

The possible use of in vitro shoot morphogenesis and shoot apex culture to evaluate salt tolerance in cultivated tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) has been analyzed, using two cultivars with similar salt tolerance, Pera and Hellfrucht frühstamm (HF). The effect of salt on shoot regeneration was studied by culturing leaf explants on media supplemented with 0, 43, 86, 129 and 172 mM NaCl. The presence of NaCl in the regeneration media at 86 mM strongly inhibited shoot regeneration in the cultivar HF, but not in Pera. However, the substitution of NaCl by mannitol, maintaining the same water potential in the culture media, decreased the regeneration percentage in Pera but did not affect HF. Shoot apices of both cultivars were also subcultured at 6-week intervals, for 4 subcultures, at the same NaCl concentrations as used in the previous experiment, and the shoot growth, leaf and root number, rooted shoot and shoot necrosis were recorded at the end of each subculture. Root formation was the parameter most affected by salt in both cultivars, Pera being more sensitive than HF. The substitution of NaCl by mannitol significantly increased the percentage of rooted shoots in Pera after four subcultures, and slightly decreased this percentage in HF. Shoot necrosis was only observed in the last subculture at NaCl higher than 86 mM, the percentage of necrotic shoots being higher in Pera than in HF (75% and 45%, respectively). The lack of agreement between the results obtained with the in vitro tests, e.g., adventitious shoot formation and growth of apical stem sections, suggests that this approach may not be a reliable tool to evaluate salt tolerance in cultivated tomato. Seasonal changes in water relations, production and mineral composition were studied in a sward ofCynodon dactylon (L). Pers. subjected to water deficits during a dry summer, and at recovery in autumn. The experiment was carried out under Mediterranean field conditions. Water deficits during summer reduced total dry matter production by 60%, but in autumn there were no differences between treatments. Compared to well-watered sward, the sward grown under drought showed an increase in potassium, calcium and nitrogen of 55, 10 and 10% respectively. These differences decreased with the arrival of autumn rains. Leaf osmotic potential (ΨΠ) fell during the dry summer to −2.8 MPa in well-watered plants and to −4.2 MPa in stressed plants. In autumn there were no differences between treatments. Nevertheless, relative water content (RWC) only decreased to 0.86 in droughted plants. In summer potassium contributed to the osmotic adjustment. In contrast, under water deficits a decrease of 71% in sodium and, to a lesser but significant extent decreases in phosphorus, magnesium and chlorine was observed. Nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur showed low concentrations during summer and increased in autumn.  相似文献

A glasshouse experiment was undertaken to investigate the effect of mycorrhizal infection on the allocation of phosphorus (P) in agronomically P-efficient (i.e. high yields at low P supply) and inefficient barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars. Four barley cultivars differing in agronomic P-efficiency were inoculated or not inoculated with Glomus etunicatum. Cultivars did not differ in percentage of root length infected. The concentration of P in roots of the inefficient cultivars was higher than that of the efficient cultivars. However, because of changes in root to shoot dry weight ratio and below-ground productivity, mycorrhizal infection significantly reduced the percentage of total plant P in roots of the inefficient cultivars. The distribution of P between root and shoot of P-efficient cultivars was not affected by mycorrhizal infection. Root to shoot dry weight ratio of the P-efficient cultivars was lower than that of the inefficient cultivars, and the decrease in the ratio following infection was significant in inefficient but not in P-efficient cultivars. This study indicates that mycorrhizal infection alters the allocation of P in inefficient cultivars and effectively improves the efficiency of P utilization with respect to shoot growth.  相似文献

This paper presents information about the release of nitrogen and phosphorus from dying grass roots and the capture of phosphorus by other, living plants. We have paid particular attention to the part played by mycorrhizas in this phosphorus capture, and the possible importance of mycorrhizal links between dying and living roots.WhenLolium perenne plants were grown with ample nutrients and their roots then detached and buried in soil, about half the nitrogen and two-thirds of the phosphorus was lost in three weeks, but only one-fifth of the dry weight. The C:N and C:P ratios suggest that microbial growth in the roots would at first be C-limited but would become N- and P-limited within three weeks.Rapid transfer of32P can occur from dying roots to those of a living plant if the two root systems are intermingled. The amount transferred was substantially increased in two species-combinations that are known to form mycorrhizal links between their root systems. In contrast, in a species-combination where only the living (receiver) plant could become mycorrhizal no significant increase of32P transfer occurred. This evidence, although far from conclusive, suggests that mycorrhizal links between dying and living roots can contribute to nutrient cycling. This research indicates a major difference in nutrient cycling processes between perennial and annual crops.  相似文献

This experimental study focused on the seasonal changes and mobilization of nutrients between plant parts to understand the implications of self-thinning in the ecology of Zizania latifolia (Griseb.) Turcz. ex Stapf. The observations of shoot density, above- and belowground biomass, and total nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations were conducted from February 2002 to August 2003. The biomass of shoots that died during the period and daily uptake of nutrients were determined. The shoot density sharply increased until mid-April and thereafter decreased significantly due to self-thinning of shoots. Total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations of rhizomes decreased initially due to translocation to new shoots; however, the nutrients of rhizomes were slightly replenished from dead shoots during self-thinning. In contrast to other species, self-thinning of Z. latifolia shoots reallocates some of the minerals contained in the dead shoots back to the rhizomes, which can be regarded as a strategy to replenish the reduced resources of the rhizomes. The initial intensive growth of shoots can be regarded as a strategy to maintain resource competition.  相似文献

Lotus tenuis (Wadst. & Kit.) is a perennial legume widely grown for pasture in the flood-prone and salt affected Pampa region of Argentina. The physiology of salt and waterlogging tolerance in L. tenuis (four cultivars) was evaluated, and compared with Lotus corniculatus (three cultivars); the most widely cultivated Lotus species. Overall, L. tenuis cultivars accumulated less Na+ and Cl, and more K+ in shoots than L. corniculatus cultivars, when exposed to 200 mM NaCl for 28 days in aerated or in stagnant solutions. Root porosity was higher in L. tenuis cultivars due to greater aerenchyma formation. In a NaCl dose–response experiment (0–400 mM NaCl in aerated solution), L. tenuis (cv. Chaja) accumulated half as much Cl in its shoots than L. corniculatus (cv. San Gabriel) at all external NaCl concentrations, and about 30% less shoot Na+ in treatments above 250 mM NaCl. Ion distributions in shoots were determined for plants at 200 mM NaCl. L. tenuis (cv. Chaja) again accumulated about half as much Cl in old leaves, young leaves and stems, compared with concentrations in L. corniculatus (cv. San Gabriel). There were not, however, significant differences between the two species for Na+ concentrations in the various shoot tissues. The higher root porosity, and maintenance of lower shoot Cl and Na+ concentrations in L. tenuis, compared with L. corniculatus, contributes to the greater tolerance to combined salt and waterlogging stress in L. tenuis. Moreover, significant variation for tolerance to combined salinity and waterlogging stress was identified within both L. tenuis and L. corniculatus.  相似文献

Summary Previous experiments, using 32P pulse labelling, showed that when roots of Lolium perenne were detached from the shoot, a substantial proportion of the phosphorus in the roots could within a few weeks be released and be captured by another, living plant. This paper describes experiments designed to confirm and further investigate this rapid nutrient transfer. Roots from plants grown with ample N and P were detached and placed in litter bags in soil. They lost up to 60% of their initial N and up to 70% of their P in three weeks. Even when roots were grown with deficient P supply, resulting in C:P ratios of 300–400, they lost 20–30% of their initial P. Time-courses of 32P loss from roots suspended in solution gave results which agreed with these figures. The initially rapid rate of 32P loss had declined greatly within three weeks. In a pot experiment small L. perenne plants showed a marked increase in their N and P content during 30 days after a neighbouring large plant's shoot was removed, supporting rapid capture of nutrients lost from the detached roots. To investigate P loss from roots while attached to the shoot, L. perenne shoots were clipped every four days and 32P loss from the roots measured. After the third clip the rate of loss increased, eventually to more than four times that from the control plants.  相似文献

Phosphorus levels, phenology of roots and shoots, and development of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi were monitored for two years in natural populations of the perennial alpine herb, Ranunculus adoneus. The purpose of this study was to understand how phosphorus uptake relates to the phenology of R. adoneus and to ascertain whether arbusculus, fungal structures used for nutrient transfer, were present when maximum phosphorus accumulation was occurring. Arbuscules were only present for a few weeks during the growing season of R. adoneus and their presence corresponded with increased phosphorus accumulation in both the roots and shoots of R. adoneus. In addition, phosphorus accumulation and peaks in mycorrhizal development occurred well after plant reproduction and most plant growth had occurred. The late season accumulation of phosphorus by mycorrhizal roots of R. adoneus is stored for use during early season growth and flowering the following spring. In this way R. adoneus can flower before soils thaw and root or mycorrhizal nutrient uptake can occur.  相似文献

An efficient and simple method for plant regeneration from immature lentil seeds (Lens culinaris) is described. Immature seeds from 1 to 6 mm of four lentil cultivars were cultured in vitro on 10 different media. Culture media included different concentrations of N 6 -benzylaminopurine (BAP), alone or in combination with other phytohormones. After 4 weeks in culture, multiple shoot regeneration was observed using media with BAP. Immature seed size showed significant effect on shoot regeneration. Regenerated shoots (up to 4 shoots per explant on medium with Kinetin (KN) and from 5 to 20 on media with BAP) formed adventitious roots 30 days after transferring them to a medium containing 11.4 μM indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). The efficiency of the rooting medium varied depending upon the shoot-regeneration medium and the cultivar tested. The highest rooting percentage (88.9%) was obtained from regenerated shoots of the cultivar Verdina on a medium with 1 μM α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The effect of phosphorus supply on the formation, morphology and anatomy of cluster roots of Lupinus albus L. cv Ultra grown in a loam and two sandy soils was examined relative to its effect on total root length, shoot weight and the phosphorus concentration of the shoots. The loam soil was most conducive to the formation of cluster roots. Cluster roots growing in the sandy soils developed to a lesser extent on plants of an equivalent phosphorus status, suggesting that some biotic or abiotic factors independent of phosphorus supply were also operating. The presence of mature cluster rootlets on a length of lateral root increased the root surface area by 14–22 times of an equal length of lateral roots not bearing cluster rootlets. The application of phosphorus decreased cluster-root length, whereas total root length showed a steady increase. There was an inverse relationship between cluster-root production and phosphorus concentration in shoots ranging from 2 to 8.5 mg g–1 with the critical phosphorus level for maximum shoot growth being around 2.5 mg g–1. Cluster roots formed in solution culture were not well developed in comparison with those grown in the loam soil or nutrient solution with added loam soil. The organisation of the cluster rootlet was similar to that of the lateral roots. Mature rootlets lacked an apical meristem and a vascular cambium with a reduced root cap and cortical tissue.  相似文献

Fifteen lettuce cultivars representing three different morphological types were grown in a sand alumina system under conditions of low (deficient) and high (sufficient) P supply. An efficient plant was defined as one that produced a large shoot fresh weight under low P conditions. Cultivars within their respective groups varied significantly for some traits that appeared to be important in determining adaptation to P. This led to the conclusion that accumulation of P in shoot tissue or the total plant was the main difference between efficient and inefficient cultivars. Accumlation of P seemed to be due to a greater absorption capability of roots or greater root mass (weight), depending on the different lettuce groups. Differences in internal use of P did not contribute to differences in shoot fresh weight. The butterhead cultivars were the least efficient plants when grown under low P. Compared to the other groups, plants has lower translocation efficiency and a greater root: shoot ratio. Never-the-less, butterhead cultivars as efficient as the best cultivars of other groups were found. There were no differences between Brazilian and American cultivars for any of the traits analysed, probably due to the fact that in both countries vegetables are bred under high fertility levels and grown with heavy applications of fertilizers. The results of this study demonstrate that there were genotypic variability and/or genotype×environment interaction effects for shoot weight (yield) among the lettuce cultivars grown under low P conditions imposed in the sand-alumina system.  相似文献

Summary The absorption and transport of Cu were studied in perennial ryegrass grwon on 21 soils under controlled environment conditions. Neither the concentration, nor the total amount, of Cu in the shoots was related to available Cu in the soils as assessed by extraction with 0.05M EDTA, 0.005M DTPA, or 1.95 per cent HNO3. The concentration in the roots and, more especially, absorption per unit weight of root (i.e. μg Cu g dry wt−1) were, however, highly correlated with available soil Cu. This suggests that, unless the extent of exploitation of the soil by roots is taken into account, measurements of available Cu will not be effective in predicting uptake by plants. On average, 63 per cent of the Cu absorbed by the roots was retained in the roots, and variation in the proportion retained was related to the transport of nitrogen from roots to shoots. On some soils the concentrations of N and Cu in the shoots were significantly correlated, and variation in N concentration accounted for a considerable proportion of the variance in the Cu concentration at later harvests. The relative importance of the measured soil (pH, organic matter) and plant (dry weight, N content) factors changed markedly over 6 successive harvests.  相似文献

Kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus)is a fast growing annual with tremendous potential as a source of fiber for ropes, textiles and paper. Kenaf is an environmentally friendly crop; however, commercial production of kenaf is hindered by weed competition at the seedling stage. Herbicide resistant kenaf cultivars would reduce seedling weed competion and make growing kenaf more profitable. Factors that are important in establishing a transformation system for kenaf were examined. The influence of Agrobacterium strain, temperature, host tissue wounding, acetosyringone, virG/virE genes and host cell division on T-DNA expression in the kenaf shoot apex were investigated. Three Agrobacterium strains were tested, and A. tumefaciens LBA4404 significantly (α=0.05) yielded a high number of shoots surviving on selection medium; no shoots survived with EHA101S or Z707S. There was no significant difference (α=0.05) in transient T-DNA expression between 28 °C and 25 °C; however, shoots did not survive 16 °C or 19 °C co-cultivation temperatures. Shoot apex survival was increased significantly (α=0.05) when virulence genes and a cytokinin, TDZ, were combined. Sonicated shoots showed an increase in transient expression and shoot survival. Optimal conditions for shoot apex T-DNA transfer and expression were sonication for 5 s, co-cultivation with LBA4404 containingvirG/virEat room temperature, and 200 μmol/L acetosyringone.  相似文献
