Fifteen Black Bengal kids of about 3 months of age and body weight ranging from 3.8 to 4.9 kg were randomly distributed into three groups of five. Kids grazed native pasture 8 h/d. The kids in group I received supplementary concentrate (maize 35%, mustard cake 32%, rice bran 30%, mineral mixture 2% and common salt 1%) at approximately 2% of BW. However, 25 and 50% of the concentrate was replaced with jackfruit leaves for groups II and III, respectively. Total dry matter intake (DMI) was significantly higher in groups II and III than for group I due to greater forage consumption. Digestibility of CP (P < 0.05) decreased and that of NDF increased (P < 0.01) with increasing level of jackfruit leaves in the diet. Digestibility of ADF (P < 0.01), hemi cellulose (P < 0.05) and cellulose (P < 0.01) was higher in groups II and III in comparison to group I. Ruminal pH and TVFA concentration were not significantly different among the groups; however, rumen ammonia-N concentration decreased (P < 0.01) with increased level of jackfruit leaves in the diet. Similarly, plasma urea nitrogen and blood glucose levels were also reduced (P < 0.05) with increasing level of jackfruit leaves in the diet Average daily gain (ADG) was 47.33, 45.11 and 35.56 g/d in groups I, II and III, respectively. ADG and DMI/kg gain were not adversely affected when the level of replacement was restricted to 25%; however, at the 50% of replacement both parameters were adversely affected (P < 0.05). From the results of this experiment, it was concluded that jackfruit leaves might replace 25% of the supplemental concentrate for growing kids grazing in native pasture of northeast India.  相似文献

Because gills are frequently important in ion transport and osmoregulation, the present investigation was designed to determine if atrial natriuretic peptides (putative osmoregulatory peptides) are present within the gills of a representative euryhaline osmoconforming invertebrate. Utilizing three radioimmunoassays devised to amino acids 1–30, 31–67, and 99–126 of the 126 amino acid prohormone, the gills of 72 eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica were examined and each found to contain atrial natriuretic peptides, whose content was approximately one-seventh of that within the heart of the oyster. In high salinity (32 parts per thousand, ppt) the content of atrial natriuretic peptides recognized by each of the three radioimmunoassays was lower at 3 days (P < 0.005) and then became higher (P < 0.001) compared with their content in medium salinity (21 and/or 27 ppt). The content of atrial natriuretic peptides within gills in a low salinity environment (8 ppt) was significantly lower (P < 0.05) at 3, 7, and 14 days compared with their content in either medium or high salinity environments. We conclude that atrial natriuretic peptides are present within the gill tissues of Crassostrea virginica and that their content changes with alterations in environmental salinity. Their lower content at 3 days in high salinity implies a release of stored natriuretic-like peptides that are re-synthesized by 1 week. The decreased content of atrial natriuretic peptides at 3 days, 1 and 2 weeks in low salinity versus medium or high salinity environments suggests that their synthesis is decreased when exposed to a lower salinity in the environment.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of Leucaena leucocephalaMorus albaTectona grandis (2:1:1) based leaf meal mixture as a protein supplement to partially (50%) replace conventional supplements on the performance of female goats. Local female goats (12) were divided into three groups in a completely randomized design to receive either a leaf meal mixture (LMTM) based supplement, or groundnut cake (GNC) or soybean meal (SBM) incorporated concentrate, and wheat straw as basal diet for a period of about 4 months. Blood enzymes and immunological profile were monitored in all goats at 0, 30, 60 and 90 days of feeding. While dry matter intake (DMI) (g kg−0.75 BW) of goats given LMTM was higher (P<0.05) than SBM, it was comparable to their counterparts fed GNC. Digestibility of nutrients, except for depressed crude protein digestibility (P<0.05) in SBM group, was comparable among dietary treatments. Nitrogen intake and fecal excretions were similar irrespective of supplements, the urinary excretion of N in goats given GNC was significantly higher than comparable excretion in goats on LMTM and SBM. Balance of N (g per day) remained positive in all goats, however it was significantly higher in animals on LMTM as compared to GNC. The DCP, TDN and ME values of the composite diets were comparable among dietary treatments. Intake of DCP, TDN and ME was close to stipulated NRC requirements. Blood enzymes (alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST)) and serum protein electrophoresis pattern (albumin, α-globulin, β-globulin and γ-globulin) did not differ significantly due to the replacement of 50% dietary protein by LMTM throughout the experiment. It may be concluded that leaf meal mixture could be used inexpensively as a vegetable protein supplement to wheat straw based diets for goats without any adverse effect on voluntary intake, nutrient utilization, serum enzymes and immune status.  相似文献

Gangetic delta is considered as the homeland of cholera, which is thought to be influenced by changes in populations of estuarine Vibrio cholerae. We aim to identify the environmental, biotic and abiotic driving forces influencing the V. cholerae dynamics in riverine-estuarine environment of southern deltaic Bengal. Cultivable Vibrio count (CVC) ranged between 1 and 103 colony forming units (CFU)/mL at a salinity gradient of 1.9–30 practical salinity unit (PSU). Increased water temperatrure during summer influences the higher CVC followed by a sudden fall along with the onset of monsoon upto winter. While summer V. cholerae O1 peak (50–100 CFU/mL) can be associated with higher water temperature (P < 0.05) and higher turbidity (P < 0.005); sharp fall during monsoon (15–45 CFU/mL) is attributed to reduced salinity (25–2.5 PSU). Plankton attached V. cholerae O1 varied between 10 and 1000 CFU/mL with a highest peak at winter followed by summer and monsoon. Prevalence of toxigenic V. cholerae O1 in low salinity (2–7.5 PSU) during monsoon identifies that high water temperature (>25 °C), higher turbidity (>100 NTU) and lower salinity plays the pivotal role in toxicity acquisition. Present investigation establishes the role of Sundarban mangrove, where V. cholerae exist in an avirulent condition. During migration towards low saline inland system, V. cholerae pool possibly acquires toxin genes under the influence of environmental factors. Planktonic attachment is possibly a survival strategy at adverse condition, when they do not acquire any toxin gene. Seasonal V. cholerae dynamics has been thoroughly established in environmental settings of high saline mangrove and brackish water flowing to inland low saline condition.  相似文献

We examined associations between riparian canopy cover, presence or absence of cattle, rainfall, solar radiation, month of year, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, salinity, and Enterococcus concentrations in riparian surface soils with Enterococcus geometric mean in-stream water concentrations at Waipā watershed on the north side of the Hawaiian island Kaua’i. Each 1% decrease in riparian canopy cover was associated with a 4.6 most probable number (MPN)/100 ml increase of the geometric mean of Enterococcus in stream water (P < 0.05). Each unit decrease in salinity (ppt) was associated with an increase of Enterococcus by 68.2 MPN/100 ml in-stream water geometric mean concentrations (P < 0.05). Month of year was also associated with increases in stream water Enterococcus geometric mean concentrations (P < 0.05). Reducing riparian canopy cover is associated with Enterococcus increases in stream water, suggesting that decreasing riparian vegetation density could increase fecal bacteria surface runoff.  相似文献

A mesocosm study was conducted to determine the effects of variable salinity and light on Vallisneria americana Michx. (wild celery) and associated algal community components in the lower St. Johns River, Florida. Fifteen centimeter diameter intact plant plugs were collected from the LSJR in March 2001 and transported to mesocosm facilities in Lafayette, Louisiana. A factorial experimental design was used consisting of three salinity levels (1, 8, and 18 ppt), three light levels (0, 50, and 90% shading), and three replicate mesocosms of each for a total of 27 mesocosms. The experiment consisted of a 4-week acclimation period followed by a 5-month treatment period. V. americana responded negatively to increased salinity. Although V. americana survived 8 ppt salinity, growth was limited. At 18 ppt, almost all V. americana aboveground biomass had perished within 10 weeks, but when salinity was lowered back to 1 ppt, approximately 20% of the aboveground biomass recovered within the following 10 weeks. At midtreatment harvest, light did not affect V. americana biomass directly (P = 0.8240), but by final harvest (20 weeks) light affected belowground biomass (P < 0.0014). Both salinity and light affected algal growth. Macroalgae dominated 1 ppt salinity treatments in ambient light, but phytoplankton dominated 8 and 18 ppt salinity treatments in ambient light. Algal communities were greatly inhibited by 90% shading. While salinity directly impacted V. americana growth and survival, light effects were less direct and involved algal community associations.  相似文献

The effects of different group sizes on feed intake, growth and behaviour in penned kids and lambs were studied in an experiment (Exp. 1) with 30 kids and 30 lambs used in 3 periods. In each period, animals were divided into five group sizes. The group sizes were one, two, three, four or five animals per pen. In a second experiment (Exp. 2) 36 kids and 36 lambs were allotted to two groups of one and five animals per group. The diet consisted of Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) and Acacia (Acacia mangium) foliages, sugar-cane (Saccharum officinarum) and concentrate. The foliages were given ad libitum, equal to 130% of intake of fresh matter of the group the previous day, and concentrate and sugar-cane were given at a level of 10 g dry matter (DM)/kg initial body weight. The time for each period in Exp. 1 was 21 days, with the last 7 days for data collection. The behaviour observations were done during the last 4 days of each data collection period. The time for Exp. 2 was 84 days.In Exp. 1, the kids had a higher total DM intake (DMI) (P = 0.011) and DMI of Jackfruit (P < 0.001) than the lambs. Total intake increased linearly as group size increased (P = 0.03). When feeding Jackfruit or sugar-cane aggressive behaviours recorded per pen or per animal increased linearly with group size. In Exp. 2, there was no difference in total DMI between kids and lambs, but kids had a significantly higher DMI of Jackfruit and a lower DMI of sugar-cane. Total DMI and DMI of Jackfruit and sugar-cane were similar for the group sizes of five animals and one animal, but kids showed a higher total intake and intake of Jackfruit in the group sizes of five animals, while a higher intake was obtained in single pens for lambs. The weight gain was higher (P < 0.05) for the lambs compared to the kids, but similar for the animals in the group size of one or five animals. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly lower for the lambs compared to the kids, but not different between group sizes. The water intake of the lambs was higher (P < 0.05) than that of the kids in both experiments and the animals in the pens with high density drank more water than the animals in individual pens only in Exp. 2. In conclusion, increasing the number of animals in the pens increased feed and water intake and also aggressive behaviours and did not improve growth rate or feed conversion ratio.  相似文献

Oak acorn contains high levels of tannins which have capacity to form complexes with proteins and consequently reduce their availability and as a result it could reduce colostrum quality and immunoglobulin (Ig) synthesis. Thus, the aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of dietary oak (Quercus persica) acorn (OA) level during the last 60 days of pregnancy on colostrum composition and plasma metabolites and IgG level of goats and their kids. In all, 24 multiparous pregnant goats (41.7±2.3 kg BW) were assigned into one of the three experimental diets consisted of control diet (without OA) and diets containing 20% (OA20) or 40% (OA40) OA on dry matter basis. Goats fed OA40 had lower BW change compared with other groups (P⩽0.05). Kids birth weight was not affected by experimental diets (P>0.05). Goats fed OA containing diets had lower plasma glucose, triglyceride and Fe concentrations compared with those fed the control diet (P<0.01). Plasma IgG (P<0.01) and urea (P<0.05) concentrations were lower in goats fed OA40 compared with others. Animals fed OA containing diets had higher plasma alanine aminotransferase than those fed the control diet (P<0.05). Goats fed OA40 produced colostrum with lower fat (P⩽0.05) and lactose (P<0.01) contents compared with other animals. Goats fed OA containing diets had lower colostrum IgG level than those fed the control diet (P⩽0.05). Kids plasma total protein concentration was not affected by experimental diets (P>0.05), whereas kids born from goats fed OA containing diets had lower plasma IgG level compared with the control diet (P<0.01). It is concluded that feeding OA during the last 60 days of pregnancy decreased colostrum quality which may have adverse effect on kid’s survival.  相似文献

The effects of live Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CNCM I-1077) supplementation to 72 Saanen dairy goats in early lactation were investigated. Animals were divided into treatment and control groups balanced for parity and milk production in the first 3 weeks of lactation. Treated animals received 0.2 g/day yeast supplement (Levucell SC20) corresponding to 4 × 109 cfu/day S. cerevisiae, beginning week 3 of lactation, and lasting 15 weeks. Dry matter intake (DMI), body condition score (BCS), milk production and composition were recorded to day126 postpartum. Milk samples were analysed weekly for fat, protein, lactose, urea and SCC. Blood samples were analysed monthly for glucose, BHBA, NEFA, GOT and GGT. Intestinal microflora were assessed monthly in faeces, assaying total bacteria, enterobacteria, E. coli, coliform bacteria, clostridia, lactobacilli, molds and yeast. BCS was not affected by the treatment, but treated animals had greater DMI (2.71 kg/day versus 2.35 kg/day, S.E. ±0.12, P < 0.001) and produced more (P < 0.05) milk (2.38 kg/day versus 2.08 kg/day, S.E. ±0.14) of lower fat content (P < 0.05). Plasma metabolites and liver enzymes (GOT, GGT) were similar between groups, although BHBA levels tended to be lower (P = 0.06) in treated animals. Faecal E. coli were reduced (0.72 log10 cfu/g versus 2.39 log10 cfu/g, S.E. ±0.38, P < 0.05) and lactobacilli increased (P < 0.05) by the treatment. Yeast faecal levels were higher (P < 0.001) in treated animals during supplementation. In this study, live yeast supplementation to early lactating dairy goats significantly increased milk production, in relation to increased DMI, without decreasing BCS. Plasma metabolites (glucose, BHBA and NEFA) were consistent with the BCS findings (no differences between groups) and in addition there was a significant reduction of faecal E. coli content together with increase in lactobacilli in the treated animals, suggesting greater stability of the intestinal ecosystem. Results suggest that the inclusion of Saccharomyces cerevisae in the diet of early lactating dairy goats can be recommended under field conditions.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of prebiotic fructooligosaccharide (FOS) on the innate immune response, stress resistance, digestive enzyme activities, growth factors and survival of Caspian Roach (Rutilus rutilus) fry. After acclimation, fish (0.67 ± 0.03 g) were allocated into 12 tanks (50 fish per tank) and triplicate groups were fed a control diet or diets containing 1%, 2% or 3% FOS. At the end of the trial (7 weeks), humoral innate immune parameters (serum Ig levels, lysozyme activity and alternative complement activity (ACH50)), resistance to salinity stress (150 g L−1), digestive enzyme activities (amylase, lipase and protease) and growth factors (final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), food conversion ratio (FCR), and condition factor) were assessed. At the end of the study the innate immune responses (Ig levels, lysozyme activity and ACH50) were significantly higher in 2% and 3% FOS fed fish (P < 0.05), whereas, 1% dietary FOS only elevated serum lysozyme activity. All dietary FOS levels significantly increased resistance to a salinity stress challenge (P < 0.05) and highest survival was observed in the 3% FOS group. Similarly, digestive enzyme activities were significantly elevated with increasing levels of dietary FOS (P < 0.05). Subsequently, elevated growth performance (final weight, SGR and FCR) was observed in roach fed 2% and 3% FOS compared to the control group (P < 0.05). These results indicate that FOS can be considered as a beneficial dietary supplement for improving the immune response, stress resistance, digestive enzyme activities and growth performance of Caspian roach fry.  相似文献

The effects of hyperhydration, induced by oral loading via a stomach tube (41 of 0.9% NaCl within 2–3 min), intra-peritoneal and intra-jugular infusions (41 of 0.9% NaCl solution at a rate of 21 hr−1) in normally hydrated goats, on fluid retention, plasma expansion, kidney function and drinking response were compared. Higher fluid retention (67 and 65% vs. 40% at 3 hr after the termination of the infusion, P < 0.01), attenuated diuretic (P < 0.01) and natriuretic (P < 0.01) responses and lower expansion of plasma volume (P < 0.05) were recorded in the orally and intra-peritoneally treated goats in comparison with the intra-jugularly treated animals. Portal expansion apparently induces acceleration of saliva secretion which recycles water to the gut. Recycling of water to the gut reduced excessive expansion of plasma fluid and load on the kidney. Retention of water in the rumen satiated the urge to drink in the orally and intra-peritoneally treated goats for at least 24 hr. The intra-jugularly treated goats consumed a significant amount of water (11), which was approximately half of their normal requirement. Under arid conditions, these responses are appropriate to the animals' regular exposure to severe dehydration and rapid rehydration.  相似文献

Rancid and tart flavours are the most common off-flavours in Norwegian goat milk. In a feeding trial, we examined the effects of different levels of concentrate and of supplementary hay feeding on the occurrence of these off-flavours. Forty-eight experimental goats grazed cultivated pasture in the lowland during spring and autumn, and mountain pasture in summer. Twenty-four of the goats were fed 0.2 kg/day of concentrate (low concentrate, LC) and the remaining 24 goats 0.7 kg/day (high concentrate, HC). Twelve animals in LC and HC groups grazed freely, while the remaining goats in the two groups were given feeding challenges (limited periods of roughage restriction and ad libitum hay feeding). This was done to examine the effect of differing roughage availability on milk flavour. The animals fed low level of concentrate and with free grazing represented the control group. During the challenge periods, the goats were kept indoors and fed 0.2 kg hay/day for 2 days (roughage restriction) or hay according to appetite for 2 days (ad libitum feeding). At least 10 days of uninterrupted grazing were allowed between the challenges. Milk samples for sensory and chemical analysis were taken at the end of the challenge periods. The level of concentrate feeding did not influence the flavour of the milk when the goats were on lush spring pasture. However, the low level of concentrate feeding (LC) increased the frequency of off-flavour during the mountain and autumn experimental periods (P < 0.05).In the end of the mountain experimental period when the frequency of rancid/tart flavour increased in all groups, the sensory quality of milk produced by goats fed hay ad libitum (S1) had better taste ratings (P < 0.001) than milk from goats that were grazing. When the goats were given restricted amounts of hay, they adapted to the treatment by reducing their milk yield. In the spring and mountain experimental periods, restricted roughage feeding resulted in higher fat content and better taste ratings, especially in the group fed low level of concentrate (LC/S1). However, this connection was not clear in the autumn.Probably, the goats are able to handle a negative energy balance as long as mobilizable body reserves exist, but start to produce milk with lower dry matter content and higher frequencies of rancid/tart flavour when the body reserves are empty and the energy deficit is still pronounced. It is concluded that increasing the level of concentrate and feeding hay supplements will reduce the frequency of flavour defects at times when grazing is suboptimal or the pasture is of medium or low quality.  相似文献

The effect of grazing and homeopathic therapy on sheep immune response and milk production was investigated on 40 multiparous Merino derived ewes. Twenty animals were housed in an indoor-bedded pen (P), whereas 20 others were allowed to graze on pasture for 9 h/d (G). P and G animals were fed an equivalent diet in terms of dry matter intake, crude protein percentage and energy concentration. In each group, 10 animals were subjected to unicistic homeopathic treatments (H), while 10 ewes were kept as a control and treated with conventional medicine when necessary (C). The grazing rearing system had a marked positive effect on in vivo cellular immune response (delayed-type hypersensivity to PHA, P < 0.001). Grazing animals produced more milk than the penned ones (1048.00 ± 75.61 kg versus 853.04 ± 67.78 kg, P < 0.05), with increased content of milk fat (7.69 ± 0.15% versus 7.25 ± 0.14%, P < 0.05). Accordingly, blood levels of triglycerides (P < 0.01), urea (P < 0.001) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (P < 0.001) were significantly higher in group G. The homeopathic treatments produced limited effects on the milk production and immune response. However, such treatments reduced the risk of contamination of the products with medicinal traces, as H group received no allopathic treatment.  相似文献

ObjectivesWomen with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are at high risk for metabolic disorders, which prompted the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) to publish a 2005 position statement recommending screening for metabolic disease. The purposes of the present study were to 1) to examine changes in screening rates for obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D), metabolic syndrome (MetS), hyperlipidemia (HL), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and hypertension (HTN) in women with PCOS after publication of the 2005 AACE position statement and 2) to determine if screening rates and metabolic disorders vary by race-ethnicity.MethodsPCOS cases in 2006 (n = 547) and 2011 (n = 1,159) and metabolic disorders were identified by International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision (ICD9) code. Screening rates for metabolic disorders were determined by the presence of blood tests (hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c], lipid profile, alanine aminotransferase/aspartate aminotransferase [ALT/AST]).ResultsIn 2006, ≤ 25% of PCOS patients underwent recommended screening tests: HbA1c 18%; lipid profile < 20%; ALT/AST ≤ 25%. By 2011, only HbA1c testing had increased (18% to 21%). Obesity increased from 35% to 40%, while other metabolic disorders remained stable. Black women had the highest rates of obesity and HTN in 2011 (Obesity: Black 48%, Hispanic 44%, White 33%, Other 31%, P < .0001; HTN: Black 18%, Hispanic 9%, White 10%, Other 7%, P < .0001). Blacks and Hispanics were screened more often with ALT/AST testing (Black 27/27%, Hispanic 28/27%, White 23/22%, Other 17/18%, P = .02/.03). Screening rates were higher in the endocrine clinic for all metabolic disorders than in other clinics (P < .05).ConclusionDespite the publication of recommendations in 2005, screening rates for metabolic disease in women with PCOS remained low across all race-ethnicities in 2011. Seventy full lactations of Payoya dairy goats were used to study the effect of two different kid-rearing systems, natural or artificial, on milk yield, composition, hygiene-sanitary quality, kid growth and rearing cost. Two animal groups were established, one with goats under natural rearing (NS) and the other under artificial rearing (AR). In the NS group, the kids had free access to goat milk 18–20 h a day and were suckled up to 5 weeks of age and then the dams were milked twice daily. Dams in the AR were separated from their kids at 48 h post-partum; then, kids were reared artificially, and the dams were milked twice daily. The number of animals used in each type of rearing system was 35 (23 goats giving birth to twins and 12 goats giving birth to a single kid). Each week during suckling phase the volume of milk produced was measured, and individual samples were taken. From 5th week and until 210 days lactation, test-day yields recorded at intervals of 30 ± 3 days were obtained. The chemical composition of the milk, the bacteriology, and the somatic cell count was analyzed. The kids of both sexes were assigned to two groups, natural suckling (NS, n = 58) and ad libitum artificial rearing (AR, n = 58). Within each treatment, two groups of kids were formed depending on prolificacy: first group with kids from single birth (n = 12) and the second with twin kids (n = 46). Birth weight and weight every week upto the 4th week of life were recorded. During the 5 weeks of lactation the total milk yield per goat was higher for the NS group (140.2 L vs. 95.4 L; P < 0.001), although the total amount of marketable milk was greater for the AR group, with a difference of some 21 L (P < 0.05). Throughout the entire lactation the milk yield was higher in the group of natural rearing (total yield of 508 L vs. 400 L; P < 0.05). Although a significant effect of prolificacy was found during suckling phase (P < 0.001), during 30 weeks of lactation this factor did not affect milk yield (P > 0.05). For the milk composition and hygiene-sanitary quality there were no effects on the type of rearing system or the type of birth (P > 0.05). No significant effect was observed either for the feeding system or the sex or the prolificacy on the live weight of the kids at 28 days and the postnatal growth rate from birth to 28 days (P > 0.05). Natural rearing system had higher cost per kid comparing with artificial rearing system (€18.63/kid vs. €14.70/kid, respectively). However, when comparing total incomes during a full lactation, goats with natural rearing system had a higher income because of increment of total milk production (€29.95/kid).  相似文献

The aim of the study was to evaluate haematological responses in Red Sokoto goats (RSGs) administered with L-glutamine during the hot-dry season. Experimental animals included 28 clinically healthy RSGs divided into treated group (n = 14); each administered L-glutamine at 0.2 g/kg body weight, dissolved in 10 mL distilled water, and control group (n = 14); each administered 10 mL distilled water, per os once daily for 21 days. The ambient temperature and relative humidity recorded daily for 4 weeks were used to calculate the temperature-humidity index. Three millilitres of blood sample was collected from each goat by jugular venipuncture for haematology, while rectal temperature (RT), heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) were also measured once weekly at weeks 0 (before), 1, 2, 3 (during) and 4 (after L-glutamine administration). The haematological, RT, HR and RR data obtained weekly were analysed using repeated-measures one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's post-hoc test to evaluate differences between periods, and between treated and control groups. The PCV, haemoglobin concentration and RBC count were higher (P < 0.05) in the treated group compared to the control group during the period of L-glutamine administration. These differences were sustained till week 4. Beginning from week 1 of the study, the total leucocyte count in treated group (10.10 ± 0.25 × 103/μL) was higher (P < 0.05) than the count in control group (7.23 ± 0.41 × 103/μL), this trend was also maintained throughout the study. The neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio during weeks 3 and 4 of the experiment was lower (P < 0.05) in the treated compared to the control group. RT was lower (P < 0.05) in treated group than the control group. In conclusion, L-glutamine administration ameliorated the adverse effects of heat stress on the haematological parameters in RSGs during the hot-dry season.  相似文献

A longitudinal survey was conducted to determine the prevalence and loads of gastrointestinal parasites in goats raised by communal farmers of Qaukeni (QA) and Nkosana (NK) communities of Eastern Cape Province of South Africa between June 2007 and April 2008. One hundred and seventy one goats were weighed and had faecal samples collected from their recta in four seasons; cold-dry, hot-dry, hot-wet and the post-rainy seasons. The samples were examined by the modified McMaster technique for nematode egg types. Goats in QA weighed more (P < 0.05) than those in NK in the post-rainy, cold-dry and hot-dry seasons. However, in the hot-wet season, goats in NK had higher (P < 0.05) weights than those in QA. The most frequently detected gastrointestinal eggs were the strongyle egg type (68.4 ± 8.49 in QA and 96.1 ± 12.01 in NK), followed by coccidial oocysts (53.3 ± 8.76 in QA and 68.8 ± 8.00 in NK). The other identified nematodes were Strongyloides and Trichostrongylus egg types. Higher loads (P < 0.05) of strongyle eggs were observed in the hot-wet and post-rainy seasons, whilst the other egg types showed a peak in the hot-wet season. Strongyle egg counts were higher (P < 0.05) in NK compared to QA. The results indicate that strongyles are the major gastrointestinal egg types negatively affecting body weights of goats.  相似文献

A study was carried out to investigate the effects of feeding low quality non-conventional feeds (NCF) containing phenols and condensed tannins on the clinical profiles of sheep. Thirty-two Omani sheep were fed one of four diets with two base roughages, urea-treated palm frond (UTPF) and Rhodesgrass hay (RGH) and two concentrates, commercial concentrate (CC) and a by-products concentrate (BC) for 120 days. Haematological, serum biochemical and urine analyses were used to assess sheep health. Non-conventional feeds (urea-treated palm frond and by-products concentrate) contained higher levels of polyphenols and condensed tannins than conventional feeds (Rhodesgrass hay and commercial cubes). Feeds based on urea-treated palm frond had lower dry matter, crude protein, acid detergent fibre, neutral detergent fibre, gross energy (P < 0.001) and ash (P < 0.05) digestibility coefficients than those based on Rhodesgrass hay. Animals fed NCF had lower feed intake (P < 0.001) and lower body gain (P < 0.001) than those fed conventional ones. They also produced larger volumes of faeces (P < 0.01) which contained higher levels of nitrogen (P < 0.001) and had lower viscosity values of intestinal content (P < 0.001). Rumen liquor of NCF-fed animals had higher pH and lower ammonia–nitrogen levels (P < 0.01). Animals fed urea-treated palm frond plus by-products concentrate had lower lymphocyte (P < 0.01), monocyte (P < 0.05) and eosinophil (P < 0.05) counts by the end of the trial than those fed Rhodesgrass hay based diets. The urea-treated palm frond and by-products concentrate fed animals had lower blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels (P < 0.05), higher (P < 0.01) alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and lower serum iron (P < 0.001) than those fed Rhodesgrass hay based diets. There was a trend of increasing blood, leukocytes and specific gravity in the urine of NCF-fed animals. This experiment implies that feeding low quality non-conventional feeds containing antinutritional factors for relatively long periods might produce subtle negative effects on the physiology and chemistry of the digestive system and blood parameters which might negatively affect sheep health and make them more susceptible to diseases.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of various feeding patterns of emodin on growth, non-specific immune response, and disease resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila in juvenile Wuchang bream. Healthy Megalobrama amblycephala (initial weight: 3.47 ± 0.032) were grown in a circulating water system for 8 weeks. Five groups were studied: one control group was fed with a basal diet for eight weeks (Pattern 1, P1), and three treatment groups were fed with a trial diet of 30 mg emodin kg−1 at one-week (Pattern 2, P2), two-week (Pattern 3, P3), four-week (Pattern 4, P4) intervals. The final treatment group maintained the trial diet for the entire eight-week study duration (Pattern 5, P5). Results indicated that different feeding patterns of emodin significantly influenced the weight gain rate of Wuchang bream (P < 0.05). Fish in the P4 treatment group had significantly higher rates of weight gain (WG) than those in other treatment groups. There were no significant differences in survival rates or feed conversion ratios (FCR) between treatment groups and the control group. White blood cell count (WBC), respiratory burst activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) activity were shown to increase at first and then decrease from P3 condition to P5 condition. Fish under P4 treatment showed the most significant improvement of all tested parameters compared to control. Significantly higher levels (P < 0.05) of plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity were observed in P2 and P4 treatment groups when compared with the control group, while no significant differences were observed in the AST and ALT activity of fish in P2, P3, P4 and P5 treatment groups. In a bacterial challenge experiment with A. hydrophila, fish under P4 and P5 treatment showed lower cumulative mortality than the control group. The results of this study suggest that an initial 4-week feeding interval is recommended for the economic and practical culture of M. amblycephala.  相似文献
