Field observations suggest that, in the U.K., cattle are the preferred host of Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), followed by horses. Differences were observed in the numbers of flies feeding on individual animals both in the field and under controlled conditions. Analysis of the behaviour of four Friesian calves under attack from S. calcitrans in controlled conditions revealed that the differences in the levels of attack between individual hosts are dependent on the reactions of the host when under attack. Those hosts which respond vigorously by tail flicks, foot stamps and head-swings suffer less from attack by S. calcitrans than their more placid contemporaries. 相似文献

Sticky rectangle traps of various yellow colours and fluorescence made of cardboard were field tested against western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran, in paired trap preference experiments in Washington state. In a first experiment that involved comparisons of Alpha Scents (proprietary paint), Fluorescent Yellow (aerosol paint), Saffron Thread and Neon Light (semi‐gloss enamel paints) traps at two sites, the best performing trap was the Saffron Thread trap. In a second experiment comparing Citrus Splash (semi‐gloss enamel paint) with Alpha Scents and with Macaw and Lemon Zest (both semi‐gloss enamel paints) traps at a third site, the Citrus Splash trap outperformed the Alpha Scents trap. The Citrus Splash trap did not differ statistically from Saffron Thread and Lemon Zest traps, even though it caught 51% more flies than the Lemon Zest trap. The Alpha Scents trap caught significantly more non‐target Diptera than Fluorescent Yellow, Neon Light and Citrus Splash traps at two of three trap sites where non‐target Diptera populations were relatively high and overall it appeared less selective than the Citrus Splash trap. Results suggest that sticky rectangle traps painted semi‐gloss enamel Saffron Thread or Citrus Splash with low fluorescence could be highly useful for detecting R. indifferens. 相似文献

The olive fruit fly [Bactrocera (Dacus) oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae)] adult diet since its development in the 1960’s regularly incorporates antibiotic. Considering recent findings on the importance and function of the indigenous microbial flora of insects, the effects of antibiotic removal were measured on the survival and egg laying of wild flies derived from McPhail trappings and from field infested olive fruits. In the first case wild flies fed no antibiotic laid significantly greater numbers of eggs for two generations (in 5 out of 10 and 2 out of 10 counting dates for G1 and G2 respectively), while there were no significant differences in survival in either test (P = 0.221 for P generation, P = 0.988 for G1 generation from McPhail traps, P = 0.056 for flies from infested fruits). Percent egg–pupa recovery and adult emergence were not significantly affected by lack of antibiotic. An antibiotic‐free strain has been maintained for eight generations, showing acceptable performance when compared to the long‐reared standard ‘Laboratory’ strain. Overall results suggest the feasibility of an adult diet free of antibiotic without negative effects on colony survival and performance. 相似文献

The ovoviviparous parasitoid, Drino inconspicuoides (Diptera: Tachinidae) parasitizes a wide range of lepidopteran insects; larval period progresses in the host hemocoel. Here, we examined how D. inconspicuoides responds to melanization, which involves the activation of prophenoloxidases and is the first immune reaction induced by the host against invading organisms. We found that the larvae of D. inconspicuoides suppressed the activation of prophenoloxidases in its natural hosts, Mythimna separata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae). The suppression of melanization starts immediately after invasion and is maintained for at least 24 h. We did not detect a drastic degradation of prophenoloxidases, suggesting that the presence of other molecules targeted by D. inconspicuoides suppresses melanization. D. inconspicuoides does not inhibit a cellular immune reaction, encapsulation, and thus, it is likely that the tachinids survive secondary infections of the host by partially retaining the host immune function. 相似文献

Previous studies on frequency-dependent food selection (changing food preferences in response to changes in relative food abundance) have focused on predators and parasitoids. These organisms utilize several victims during their lifetime. We introduce the case of parasites which, having accepted a host, do not change it. We propose two alternative models to explain the biased occurrence of parasites on different host types: (1) through the option of rejecting less-preferred hosts prior to accepting one of them; (2) by differential parasite survival on different host types. These models predict that host rejection, but not differential survival, can create frequency-dependent parasitism (FDP). Unlike previously described factors responsible for frequency dependence of food selection, which act through changing the foraging behaviour of individual predators or parasitoids, FDP involves no adjustment of parasite foraging strategy according to previous feeding experience. The mite Hemisarcoptes coccophagus is an obligate parasite of armoured scale insects (Homptera: Diaspididae). Our field data show that H. coccophagus is found more frequently on ovipositing than on young host females. Our model, combining the effects of host rejection and differential survival, is used to estimate the relative contribution of these factors to parasite biased occurrence on different hosts. The contribution of differential survival was dominant in H. coccophagus, and overode any effect of host rejection. Nevertheless, our prediction that FDP may be found in parasites is supported by literature data about a parasitic water mite. 相似文献

Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead) has been produced in the laboratory for >160 generations on the larvae of oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), the propagation hosts raised routinely on a semi-synthetic wheat diet formulation. Choice tests using modified stinging units were conducted in the laboratory to investigate whether insectary rearing had altered the host seeking and oviposition behavior of female parasitoids. Results showed that fruit fly larvae that developed in papaya, Carica papaya L. var. solo, were less preferred for oviposition than fruit fly larvae that developed on wheat diet when both were exposed concurrently to naive D. longicaudata females (= females without prior oviposition experience). The substrates (pureed papaya or wheat diet) in which treatment larvae were exposed to parasitoids did not affect oviposition preference of gravid D. longicaudata for wheat diet-reared fruit fly larvae. Our study demonstrated the possibility that rearing in an insectary system may have modified the parasitization behavior of female D. longicaudata. 相似文献

Courtship can be costly and so selection should favour individual males that reduce courtship towards female types that have a low probability of resulting in copulation. One way males can do this is by associating previous courtship failure with the traits of particular rejecting females. We characterised changes in male Drosophila melanogaster courtship behaviour following a failed mating attempt with one of the four female phenotypes that varied in size, age or mating status. To do this, we assessed individual courtship behaviour for each male presented again with a female of the same phenotype that previously rejected him. Males reduced subsequent courtship most strongly for recently mated (sexually non‐receptive) females. More interestingly, males also significantly reduced courtship activity following a failed mating experience from old females but did not do so for control (large, young, virgin) or small females. As such, males significantly reduced courtship towards both female types possessing chemical cues associated with their phenotype (age and mating status), but not towards a female phenotype based on physical characteristics (body size). Our results suggest that males are able to modify their courtship behaviour following experience, but that they are better prepared to associate chemical traits that may be more reliable indicators of the likelihood of courtship failure. 相似文献

During the last decades, the economic importance of tephritid fruit flies (FF) has increased worldwide because of recurrent invasions and expansions into new areas, and reduced control capabilities of current control systems. Efficient monitoring systems, thus, are required to provide fast information to act promptly. With this aim in mind, we developed two electronic trap (e‐trap) versions for adult FF: one with specific volatiles for male and female adult Ceratitis capitata, and the second, based on the attraction of adult FF to yellow colour, targeting Dacus ciliatus, Rhagoletis cerasi and Bactrocera oleae. In the case of B. oleae, the female pheromone and ammonium bicarbonate were added as synergists. In the two versions, attracted FF were retained in the trap on glued surfaces. Real‐time images of the surfaces were automatically taken and transmitted to a server. We tested the two e‐trap versions in insect‐proof cages, where flies were released and recaptured, and in commercial orchards throughout the Mediterranean: C. capitata in peach orchards in Italy; R. cerasi in cherry orchards in Greece; B. oleae in olive orchards in Spain and in Greece; and D. ciliatus in melons in plastic tunnels in Israel. The e‐trap showed excellent abilities to transmit real‐time images of trapped FF and a high specificity for trapping different FF species. The ability of the entomologist to correctly classify FF from images in the office was >88%. In addition, average number of flies/trap in e‐trap grids did not differ from numbers reported on grids of conventional traps that were operating simultaneously. Encountering suitable hosts is key for parasite success. A general assumption for disease transmission is that the contact of a parasite with a potential host is driven by the density or relative frequency of hosts. That assumption ignores the potential role of differential host attractiveness for parasites that can drive the encounter of hosts. It has been posited that hosts may be chosen by parasites as a function of their suitability, but the existing literature addressing that hypothesis is still very scarce. In a natural system involving a parasitic Philornis botfly and its multiple bird hosts, there are profound differences in host quality. The Great Kiskadee tolerates and does not invest in resisting the infection, which makes it an optimal host. Alternative hosts are frequently used, but whilst some of them may be good options, others are bad alternatives. Here we examined the host selection processes that drive parasite dynamics in this system with 8 years of data from a longitudinal study under natural conditions. We found that the use of an alternative host was not driven by its density or relative frequency, but instead selection of these hosts was strongly dependent on availability of more suitable hosts. When optimal hosts are plentiful, the parasite tends to ignore alternative ones. As broods of optimal hosts become limited, good alternative hosts are targeted. The parasite chooses bad alternative hosts only when better alternatives are not sufficiently available. These results add evidence from a natural system that some parasites choose their hosts as a function of their profitability, and show that host selection by this parasite is plastic and context-dependent. Such findings could have important implications for the epidemiology of some parasitic and vector-borne infections which should be considered when modelling and managing those diseases. The facultative host selection observed here can be of high relevance for public health, animal husbandry, and biodiversity conservation, because reductions in the richness of hosts might cause humans, domestic animals, or endangered species to become increasingly targeted by parasites that can drive the encounter of hosts. 相似文献

In 1913, a cochineal insect species, Dactylopius ceylonicus (Green) (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae), was released in South Africa as a biological control agent against drooping prickly pear Opuntia monacantha. Later, in 1938, Dactylopius opuntiae (Cockerell) was used, together with several other biological control agents, to suppress populations of mission prickly pear, Opuntia ficus-indica. Both programmes achieved considerable success in alleviating these weed problems. In common with some other cochineal insect species, D. opuntiae is oligophagous which has led to allegations that it has competitively displaced D. ceylonicus on O. monacantha in South Africa. An investigation into this supposition showed that D. ceylonicus is still present at all of the seven sites where O. monacantha was monitored and that D. opuntiae was not found to occur on O. monacantha at any of the sites. Although D. opuntiae is able to use both O. monacantha and O. ficus-indica as hosts, under laboratory conditions its performance (developmental duration, survival and body mass of the females at maturity) was significantly inferior to that of D. ceylonicus on O. monacantha. These observations show that there is no evidence of the actual or potential displacement of D. ceylonicus by D. opuntiae on O. monacantha. 相似文献

Anthropogenic introduction of a plant species may cause novel encounters between the plant and local herbivores, and initiate evolutionary changes in host plant usage by herbivores. Until recently the endemic aquatic plant Hygrophila pogonocalyx was endangered and had a restricted distribution in Taiwan. Massive restoration efforts since 1997 have led to an expansion of the plant's distribution and a novel encounter between it and an Asian butterfly, the chocolate pansy, Junonia iphita (Nymphalidae). This butterfly appears to have colonized H. pogonocalyx, switching from its original host, Strobilanthes penstemonoides var. formosana. In the present study, we aimed to investigate whether the utilization of H. pogonocalyx as a host plant has initiated a differentiation between butterflies using the novel and the original hosts. To this purpose we collected butterflies from patches of the two host plants which grow sympatrically. We tested oviposition preference for the two hosts and larval performance on them. Female adults exhibited distinct oviposition preference toward the host plant their mothers preferred. Offspring showed greater survivorship and pupal weight when fed on the host plant their mothers preferred. Male adults displayed territorial behaviors on the host plant that their mothers had preferred. Finally, the survival rate of offspring produced from cross-mating between individuals with different host plant preference was lower than that of non-hybrids. Taken together, we suggest that genetic differentiation has occurred between individuals preferring H. pogonocalyx versus S. penstemonoides as host plants via host shifting. This process was likely induced by the mass restoration of the formerly rare and endangered plant species. 相似文献

Various colors have been used as visual cues to trap insect pests. For example, yellow traps for monitoring and control of the oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis) have been in use for a very long time. However, the chromatic cue of using color traps has never been meticulously investigated. In this study, the spectral sensitivities of the photoreceptors in the compound eyes of B. dorsalis were measured intracellularly, and the theory of receptor quantum catch was applied to study the chromatic cue of fly attracting. Responses to five wavelength categories with peak wavelengths of 370, 380, 490, and 510 nm, and one with dual peaks at 350 and 490 nm were recorded. Based on spectral sensitivities, six colored papers were chosen to test the color preference of the fly, and an additional UV preference test was done to confirm the effect of the UV stimuli. It was concluded that UV and green stimuli (spectra: 300-380 nm and 500-570 nm) would enhance the attractiveness of a colored paper to the oriental fruit fly, and blue stimuli (380-500 nm) would diminish the attractiveness. 相似文献

Based on the results of five-year study on the Nezara population, it was concluded that the level of abundance of the insect was determined partly by the combination and relative adundance of the host plants and partly by the climatic factors. The endless increase of the population was checked by the deleterious effects associated with the overpopulation which occurred locally. The degree of such overpopulation was determined by the relative abundance of host plants to the current level of the population. Therefore, even when the general level of Nezara population seemed to be low, there still exists the possibility of overpopulation in some areas. Winter was the critical period which threatened the persistence of Nezara population. The survival of the hibernating adults was partly dependent on the physiological state of adults which was determined in the period of pre-hibernation. But when the severity of a winter exceeded the tolerance limit of the insect, the only safety-valve which prevented the elimination of Nezara was the heterogeneity of hibernacula. Host caste recognition may be important for the dispersal of phoretic mites associated with social insects. All developmental
stages of the mite Parasitellus fucorum (Acari: Mesostigmata: Parasitidae) live in the nests of bumblebees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombus). Dispersal occurs by specialised phoretic instars, deutonymphs, which attach to adult bumblebees. Since bumblebee colonies
are annual and only young queens overwinter, deutonymphs that are able to discriminate between bumblebee castes and preferentially
attach to queens should be favoured by selection. In the field, deutonymphs of P. fucorum were found to be phoretic on bumblebee workers and queens, and in behavioural experiments all castes proved to be attractive
as carriers for the mites. However, they preferred queens that had hibernated as carriers when they could choose between workers
and queens. In a further experiment, when given a choice, deutonymphs switched from males to young queens but never transferred
from a queen to a male. These results suggest that deutonymphs preferentially attach to queens but may also use other castes
for transport. Those dispersing on workers and males may try to switch to queens later. Host-switching is possible during
copulation and on flowers, where bees of all castes forage.

The Asian pupal parasitoid, Xanthopimpla stemmator Thunberg, was imported into East Africa as a classical biological agent of lepidopteran cereal stem borers. Preference of X. stemmator females for four common borers of maize and sorghum; the crambid Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), the pyralid, Eldana saccharina Walker, and the noctuids, Busseola fusca Fuller and Sesamia calamistis Hampson, was investigated. Pre-adult experience of X. stemmator females did not influence choice of host. In dual choice tests, more B. fusca were attacked than E. saccharina, while E. saccharina were attacked more than Ch. partellus. Life table studies on three of the hosts revealed that the intrinsic rate of increase was highest when X. stemmator was reared on S. calamistis. Net reproductive rates, mean generation times and doubling times were not different between hosts. Results suggest that X. stemmator can be successfully reared on the three stem borer species and released in areas where any combination of the three hosts occurs. 相似文献

Commercial traps and lures have recently become available for monitoring male and female Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Australia, with possible applications in monitoring and mass trapping. This study investigated the attractiveness of commercially available male [Capilure® (CPL), Trimedlure (TML) cone, plugs, and wafers] and female‐targeted synthetic lures (three‐component BioLure®, BioLure® Unipak, Ceratitis® Unipak, TMA Plus® Unipak and Biotrap® gel), and five female‐targeted traps [Maxi® trap, Sorygar Tephri‐trap, Probodelt® cone trap, and BioTrap Globe® traps (two versions)]. Results showed that TML and CPL lures were equivalent up to 8 weeks, but TML‐baited traps captured 1.2–4.6 times more male medflies than CPL‐baited traps with lures aged 9–16 weeks. For female‐targeted trapping, all tested lures were female selective. Ceratitis® Unipak was equivalent to three‐component (3‐C) BioLure®, whilst BioLure® Unipak captured 1.1–1.5 times more medflies than 3‐C BioLure®. The least efficient lures were TMA Plus® Unipak and Biotrap Fruit Fly Attractant Gel. Tephri‐traps were the least efficient trap, with Maxi traps catching 1.9–6.7 times more medflies than the Tephri‐trap. The appropriate selection of lures and traps for applications in monitoring and mass trapping are discussed. 相似文献

Orosanga japonica Melichar (Hemiptera: Ricaniidae) is an invasive polyphagous pest in Iran. The planthopper damaged host plants by sap-sucking and egg laying on new twigs. This study aimed to determine the life table parameters of O. japonica on Rubus ulmifolius Schoot (elm leaf blackberry) and Melia azedarach L. (chinaberry) under field conditions in Rudsar (North of Iran) during 2019–2020. The collected life history data were analyzed based on age-stage, two-sex life table theory. The results showed that the incubation period of O. japonica was too long (≈ 270 days) on both host plants. The nymphs emerged from mid-May 2020. The planthopper had five nymphal stages under field conditions. The nymphal duration was 41.39 ± 0.56 days and 38.13 ± 0.62 days on R. ulmifolius and M. azedarach, respectively. The total preadult survival rates were 53.2% and 51.7% on R. ulmifolius and M. azedarach, respectively. Based on the results, a significant shorter total developmental time was observed on M. azedarach. When adults emerged in late July, they laid eggs after 26.05 days and 26.75 days on R. ulmifolius and M. azedarach, respectively. The fecundity on M. azedarach (131.69 egg/female) was significantly higher than that on R. ulmifolius. However, the life table parameters were all not significantly different on the two host plants. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) were 0.0097 ± 0.0005 day−1 and 0.0105 ± 0.0006 day−1 on R. ulmifolius and M. azedarach, respectively. Generally, these findings could be helpful to establish an efficient management strategy for this exotic pest. 相似文献
